[Note from the Publisher] It was great catching up with my good friend Steve Keener recently. My intention was to ask him some questions for my column this week. Our conversation covered everything from family to baseball, to how blessed we are to call the West Branch Valley our home. Of course, most of our chat was about everything that is Little League Baseball. One of the topics we got stuck on for a while was Little League’s new Sandlot Program, which is kids just having fun playing the game of baseball like we did back in the day. This is definitely something missing in the over organized world of today. So instead of me providing some innings of middle relief, I figured the best thing to do was let Steve throw a complete game and pen this week’s article himself. Thank you to Steve, and all the great folks at Little League Baseball for the job they do. God Bless America - Jim Webb Jr.

T

o say we miss it is an understatement. We should be together right now. Stadium music should be stuck in our heads. Our meals should

be eaten out of cardboard containers. Old friends and new ones should be conversing on the concourse. Lycoming County should be buzzing with visitors from around the world, and the anticipation of another Little League Baseball World Series Championship coursing through every conversation. The Little League World Series is truly where the world comes together; all cultures, races, and ethnicities are not only accepted but celebrated — on the field and off. But this year, no banners are hanging in the windows of our community’s businesses or being prepared for presentation to the 2020 championship team. That void we’re all feeling, at Little League International, and throughout the Williamsport community, is one we can’t fully fill until we’re back on the field. The games of baseball and softball are best suited for teaching children, and all of us, how to deal with, and overcome, adversity. There’s always the next at-bat after a tough strikeout or the next fly ball after an error in the field. These sports teach us to cope with difficult times, learn from those moments, and get better. At Little League International, that’s what we’re doing. Our new Little League Sandlot Fun

Days program has provided opportunities and excitement to communities around the world. At a time when creating schedules and plans can be challenging, this program focuses on flexibility and fun, Stephen letting our leagues bring Keener enough players together for a game, follow a few basic safety guidelines, and then allow the kids to take the lead in picking teams, calling balls and strikes, and just enjoying themselves on the baseball and softball field. Hundreds of leagues have started bringing Sandlot Fun Days to their communities, and we hope this continues to be an opportunity for kids to just have fun on the field and learn few life lessons along the way. As the world has turned to virtual experiences, so has Little League. Not just in our education and training efforts, but in an effort to provide those Little League moments that we’re so used to celebrating this time of year. We are reliving past moments on our social media channels of amazing displays of skills from young players, those unique moments that the ESPN cameras happen to capture, and, perhaps most importantly, the

displays of sportsmanship that the Little League World Series is known for. We will continue to use every effort possible to provide that connection to our program, as we await the return of being safely together again. And when we are ready to return to the field, we will be ready, and have a lot on the horizon to look forward to. The 75th Little League Baseball World Series will be celebrated in 2022; the upcoming expansion of teams at the Little League Baseball and Little League Softball World Series; the 2021 MLB Little League Classic returning to Historic Bowman Field; and our continued great relationship with ESPN that shines such a bright light on our organization and entire Williamsport community each August. While we’re missing it now, we remain optimistic and look forward to what 2021 can bring. We hope that the developments in the treatment and prevention of the Coronavirus around the world will help us plan for a safe and memorable World Series next year. And, as we focus our energy on bringing the world back to Williamsport, everyone at Little League International joins me in sending good wishes with hopes that our entire community stays safe and well. And with a little luck and a lot of hard work, we’ll see you at the ballpark next August.

S

o, I have plans to go to a party this weekend. Since I have issues showing up empty handed, I’ve been thinking about what I can bring. Also, with Labor Day coming up, I know you all have potlucks and BBQs on the horizon too. I like to try out new recipes for parties, so I’ve been searching for something to try for this party. Mac and cheese and pasta salad are great, but I’m always hunting for something a little bit different to take. I’ve narrowed it down to two recipes. Both of these look pretty fantastic and fairly easy to make, not gonna lie. So, I’ll most likely end up making both. Jalapeño Popper Bread: Ingredients • 1 (11 oz.) package Pillsbury™ refrigerated French bread • 1 (8 oz.) block cream cheese, softened • 1 teaspoon onion salt • 2 cups sharp cheddar, shredded • 2 jalapeño peppers, finely sliced Directions: Bake Pillsbury™ French bread according to package directions. half lengthwise. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together cream cheese, onion salt, and half of the cheddar cheese. Spread this mixture Steph Nordstrom on top of the cut-side of both French bread slices. Sprinkle with remaining cheese, top with sliced jalapeños. Bake in an oven preheated to 400°F for 16-21 minutes, or until the cheese bubbles

and begins to turn a light golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before slicing into 2 to 3-inch pieces and serving. According to tablespoon.com (where I find a good portion of my go-to recipes) these are “Creamy like a jalapeño popper but just about as easy to make as pop-andbake bread.” Hopefully that holds true!

Line large rimmed baking pan with cooking parchment paper. Press down center of each baguette slice to make a cup. In small bowl, mix melted butter and garlic. Brush over tops of crostini cups. In medium bowl, mix artichoke hearts, cream cheese, bacon and chili garlic sauce. Spoon into crostini cups. Top with Parmesan cheese. Bake 14 to 16 minutes or until filling is hot and cheese is melted. Transfer to serving platter; top with parsley and thyme.

Per the JSASD website, Dr. Brian Ulmer, district superintendent, stated, “The district is committed to a plan that allows students and families to continue their education and feel safe. Families are free to choose the option that works for each child.” Hybrid schedules will be developed in cooperation between the building principal and the individual families. New safety protocols will be in place, including masking when not socially distanced, temperature checks by parents and guardians, and increased sanitation of high touch areas. The PA Department of Health will handle all contract tracing and notification per the Department of Education guidance. JSASD will follow their direction. South Williamsport South Williamsport Area School district will be offering a hybrid program of both in-person and virtual classes. The students will be on an A/B schedule where 1/2 the students will attend classes in-person two days per week, with the other half taking classes remotely. According to the school’s safety plan, students will attend school on an A / B rotation. “A” will attend Monday and Thursday. “B” will attend Tuesday and Friday. All students will work remotely on days opposite their inperson instruction and on Wednesdays. Students with IEPs who need daily intensive instruction (For example Life Skills, Autistic Support, etc.) will be educated in school

While each school re-opening plan offers unique attributes, many commonalities exist, including face-coverings for all. In addition, many schools are opting for a combination of learning strategies such as virtual and inperson learning. While the region remains somewhat stable when referring to the number of new COVID-19 cases, school districts stress the need to be flexible to be able adapt to changing health conditions and mandates from the state. Untold man-hours have been devoted to this process by these area school districts. Many of the steps and policies they have adopted are similar in nature, and this is because they have to adhere to the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Department mandates. They are very extensive in scope, and we will try and summarize them. Jersey Shore Area School District Jersey Shore Area School District will offer all three options, allowing families to choose.

other students. Dr. Jacquelyn Martin, Keystone Central School District Superintendent, said, “In general, we decided to have school open five days a week because we looked at the wants of the parents/families in our community along with the low incident rate of COVID-19 spread. We believe that since only 68% of our students are returning in person (others have selected remote options), we can ensure students are 6 feet apart and follow all safety protocols.” Keystone is having a “soft opening” this year, opting to stagger the first day of school based on age groups to allow for students to adjust to the new safety protocols. The first day of school will be September 1st for younger students and September 2nd for older students. All students will be in class on September 3rd. “The soft opening is necessary to teach the new safety protocols, distribute tech devices, and work out any unexpected complications.” St. John Neumann Regional Academy Since St. John Neumann Regional Academy is a private Catholic school, re-opening guidelines are communicated somewhat differently than public schools. The guidelines first come from the Diocese of Scranton then are modified by a committee at the local level. The committee follows recommendations from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. “We looked at every minute of the day. From 7:30 a.m. - 2:40 p.m. and tried to see how that day would look with new safety protocols in place.” said Alicia McNamee, Principal of St. John Neumann Regional Academy. “We take

every day. These students will not follow the hybrid model. The benefit of this hybrid system is that since only half the students are at school at any one time, it allows for social distancing. South Williamsport Area School District will follow CDC guidelines for cleaning. “While it is clear that everyone understands school will be different and difficult, we are working on getting everyone back into school safely.” said Dr. Mark Stamm, South Williamsport Area School Superintendent. Dr. Stamm went on to say that this plan will be much better than the past spring term and that the school district plans on getting everyone back to school safely and still be in line with state guidelines. Keystone Central School District Keystone Central School District, which includes Central Mountain High School, will be offering four choices for families to return to school this fall. The options include learning at home, a virtual academy, face-toface learning, and a hybrid program. Learning at home will give students access to the same instruction that is provided in the live classroom and will follow the same pace. This option will also allow students to collaborate with teachers and learn with other students in the face-to-face classroom. The virtual academy option allows students to work at their own pace, though they would not be able to participate in live learning activities with other students. The hybrid option would include remote learning at school in a location that offers increased safety protocols and where interaction with other students is limited. Last, the face-to-face option would be live classroom instruction with a teacher and

REOPEN PLANS the staff, faculty, and students’ health and safety very seriously and have been working with the Superintendent to keep everyone safe in this environment.” The Catholic school will have in-person classes five days per week at both the elementary and high schools, though virtual options are available. In addition, the school plans to implement daily temperature checks, hand sanitization stations, and students are required to report directly to homeroom upon arrival. Masking is required for staff, faculty, and students when social distancing is not possible. Desk shields will also be used while the students are at their desks so that they do not have to mask while learning. Loyalsock Township School District Loyalsock Township School District will be opening with in-person instruction five days a week, beginning August 31st. While Loyalsock Township School District officials were unavailable for comment, the action plan that was posted on the school’s website outlined the details for re-opening. Regarding special cleaning protocols, electrostatic foggers may be used to disinfect high touch spaces, and disinfectant will be available for staff, faculty, and students. In addition, two additional electrostatic sprayers were purchased for use in the nurses’ offices. There will also be a focused cleaning of the building nightly. While in the Green Phase, class schedules will be designed to maximize social distancing as much as possible, and teachers will maximize space. Also, visitors, volunteers, presenters, and parent visitors will be restricted when feasible.

Should the county move into the Yellow Phase, the school district will implement a staggered hybrid schedule that will be implemented to limit the number of individuals in classrooms or other spaces. Using a combination of face-to-face and virtual instruction will reduce the number of students in each building and will allow for social distancing guidelines to be met since approximately only half of the students will be present. Williamsport Area School District Williamsport Area School District plans to begin instruction on September 1st using a hybrid model. Students will alternate days of in-person classes with remote learning. All students will work remotely on the fifth day. Each building will assign students their alternate school schedule. In-person instruction will be used for checkins and direct instruction. Remote learning will focus on the completion of assignments, independent reading. According to the re-opening plan listed on the district’s website, this plan allows the district to reduce the number of people in buildings and classrooms by 50%, thus allowing for social distancing. In addition, the staggered instruction schedule allows the district to reduce the number of students using school transportation. Both of which allow the school district to remain flexible and quickly adapt to changing conditions. This year has been a year like no other because of the dislocations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Area school districts

REOPEN PLANS have been challenged like they have never been before. They are now wrestling ways to re-open their schools safely after a five-month hiatus. Muncy School District In the Muncy School District, schools will re-open on August 31. All students will be required to wear face coverings at all times, even when spaced six (6) feet apart. As part of the new requirement released by the Department of Health (DOH), all school health and safety plans are required to reflect this change. Limited exceptions to the requirement include: (a) eating or drinking when spaced at least 6 feet apart; (b) when wearing a face-covering creates an unsafe

properly plan for any changes to the school calendar. The Board will evaluate the need for further calendar changes at the Monday, September 21 board meeting. If it becomes necessary to transition to a hybrid learning model, the district will bring approximately 50 percent of the student population on a set, two-day a week schedule rather than bringing approximately 33 percent of the student population on a rotating threeday cycle. I

t is with extreme regret that the 9/11 Memorial Coalition must announce that the 2020, 9/11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride is officially CANCELLED. Governor Wolf, and PennDOT, placed a new requirement on the Coalition, to be issued the permit for the Ride, that is simply “unobtainable.” We have exhausted every possible way to meet these new requirements, that were NEVER PREVIOUSLY REQUIRED for the prior 19 rides that have taken place. And we were given

less than 60 days to meet these new requirements. We pass through 19 individual municipalities on the 42-mile ride that is entirely on State Roadways. Governor Wolf and Penn Dot, at the last minute, informed the Coalition that every municipality was required to provide a letter to them that stated that the municipality would indemnify the Commonwealth and PennDOT against a lawsuit in the case of a COVID infection by a ride participant. Neither Gov. Wolf, nor

PennDOT could provide us with the wording of this letter. Many municipalities provided a letter to us but, without all 19, the ride permit would not be issued. They also required a “COVID Mitigation Plan” but could not provide any guidance or examples of such a plan. We thank Senator Yaw, Representatives Everett and Wheeland, and the Lycoming County Commissioners for their efforts to intervene on the behalf of the Coalition. We work year-round to put on this moving memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice that fateful,

sunny, Tuesday. Until late yesterday, we were hopeful that these new hurdles could be overcome. Sadly, it is impossible. And, without legislative changes, the future of the Ride is in jeopardy as this requirement will still be in place for 2021 and beyond. Understand that this cancellation was caused by Governor Wolf and PennDOT. Your questions and comments should be directed to them. We apologize. Please understand that this decision was forced upon us. We are disappointed, disheartened, and quite frankly, just plain disgusted about this.

This Week’s LION: White House Memories By Larry Stout

I

f this was a normal year, on Wednesday, August 19th, Fourth Street in Williamsport would have been packed with thousands of onlookers gathering to watch the Little League World Series Grand Slam Parade. As we all know, of course, this is definitely NOT a normal year, so there were no crowds because there was no parade. But the fact that it is not a normal year was highlighted in a different way, for on this day in the neighboring community of Montoursville, at almost the same time the parade would have been starting, a different but very significant event was taking place. Scott Metzger, the local Little League president, called together the thirteen boys and their parents who had the great privilege of visiting the White House the month before. They were to wear their uniforms and meet at their ball field off of Spruce Street at 5:00 PM. Given that Scott Metzger is also a Lycoming County Commissioner, he had official business that delayed his arrival, and the parents and players were milling around, wondering what was coming. I took the opportunity to talk to some of the kids and ask their impressions of the White House visit, now that they had

Aiden Jackson with his bat from the President.

a month to think on it. Most of the them gave the typical one word answer to a stranger, “Cool,” “Great,” etc. When I asked about their impressions of the president, it was rather interesting how normal he seemed to them. This was highlighted by one of the mothers who commented that her son came home and was convinced of two things; President Trump knows him personally and they were best friends.

MEMORIES

Scott Metzger finally did arrive and assembled the players on the bleachers while he reminded them again of the incredible privilege the thirteen of them were able to experience. Scott then remarked that he had written a thankyou letter to the White House for the visit, and the response he received was nothing short of amazing. It is typical for those who visit the White House to get some kind of memento for the visit, generally something with the presidential seal on it such as a coaster or mug. But what would a 10-12-yearold want with a mug? President Trump knew this as well, and it took him a little time to prepare the perfect memento for his young guests. In front of the kids and their parents, Scott pulled out two boxes with M&M markings on them. It would seem that even the White House practices repackaging, as the boxes did not contain candy but miniature 18” wooden bats signed by President Donald Trump with the presidential seal on them. Each of the players were presented with the bats and reminded by Coach Metzger that these bats were very, very special (!!) and that they should take very good care of them. Then they went out on the field by the scoreboard and had their picture taken with their bats while the proud parents stood watching, grinning ear to ear, pinching themselves to make sure that this really was happening to their

children. The extra effort that President Trump went to provide an extra memento for these boys was icing on the cake and was definitely appreciated by all. The magic of this moment was not just for those fortuitous thirteen youngsters who happened to be available at the last minute to be able to make this magic carpet ride to Washington DC and meet and play catch on the South Lawn of the White House with the president of the United States and the Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera. It is a magic of Little League itself. All over the world, young boys and girls play the game of baseball with the hope that maybe, just maybe, their team could make it to Williamsport and play in the Little League World Series. We take for granted how special this event is to millions and millions of children worldwide. By playing in a tournament that becomes progressively difficult, overcoming one adversary after another, a young ballplayer in Nowhere, USA or Mud Hut, Africa, has the chance to be recognized of being a member of one of the best teams in the world and televised around the globe. It takes a trip to the White House to remind us that this is a great American tradition that is esteemed by the highest leaders in our country. Yes, COVID killed our annual parade in 2020, but the graciousness of President Donald Trump gave us a different memory to hold dear in years to come.

HOME COOKIN conversation. “Awe really Ty? Why?” “Because. We wake up and go to church, come out tubing and swimming all day, and know when I go home we are having our family night. Nachos and cheese, whatever leftovers we have, and ice cream with our shows. It’s something I never want to stop doing.” My two kids look so forward to our Sunday nights. I know I have talked about this before. Won’t be the first, and won’t be the last I am sure. When I grew up, I never dreamed it would be a tradition I’d carry on with my kids. Sunday nights of AFV, Nachos and Cheese and Ice cream with mom and dad was my favorite. Who would’ve ever thought that a silly one

hour show, and a simple meal like nachos and sharp cheese would be something a child looks forward to? My husband and I already said, when we have grandbabies (Someday in the very FAR future) that it will still be our family night. Everyone will come over, gather in the living room, and grammy is gonna keep this simple family tradition alive. Ty already said he will never not be here on a Sunday night. So he is bringing his family no matter what, and momma is just fine with that. Weekday dinners as a family is my favorite thing in the world, but Sundays seem to be our favorite night, together.

We are talking 24 hours or more-a little tip to speed the softening up, halve the cookies lengthwise (don’t worry about the cream) and layer them halved. Gazette and Bulletin August 29, 1933 City Streets Share in Slash of Working Hours

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

hatever the National Recovery Act may do in the way of bettering business, it has had one visible effect on the city streets that habitues have not been long in noticing. Heretofore the official closing hour in downtown Williamsport has been 6 o’clock. Under the hour agreement which went into effect a couple of weeks ago and which practically every merchant in the central business district is living up to, the doors are shut tight at 5 o’clock, and between the hours of 5 and 6 o’clock the streets resemble those of quiet Sunday afternoon in the big city. Where the lighted stores used to present scenes of activity as belated shoppers made last-minute pur-

chases, now all is dark, and silence reigns behind closed doors. All the bustling and scurrying has been moved up an hour, and 5 o’clock now sees the clerks wending their homeward ways along crowded sidewalks and on loaded buses. During the summer there is no doubt that the extra hour is much appreciated by clerks who have sweltered throughout a long day. However, when winter comes the gentlemen who have to pound the pavements for news in the early evening are apt to miss the cheerful glow of the lights and the busy counters. However, the quiet streets are probably part of a new American life, a life in which it is to be hoped that the tempo is slower and the path less crowded. And if better business is on the way, the lost hour will not be regretted.

What a happy fella! You can’t help smiling when you see Cowboy’s big grin. The playful boy is friendly with people and enjoys walks (mostly to stop and eat or roll in the grass). He is also super happy chillin’ on your couch watching TV (as you can see). He is looking for a home without other pets and small children (because this stud muffin’s love is big enough to fill the whole house!) Can you give Cowboy the home he longs for today?

Mattie is a quiet kitty who is looking for a peaceful home where she can enjoy cozy beds and sunny windows. She is eleven years old, and we love her soulful eyes and cute little face. She is on the lean side, but we believe that it is age-related. She does not care for can food, so we slip kitten food into her dye-free dry food to help her continue to maintain a healthy weight. Do you have room in your home for this dear girl?

Fall 2020 Trends

I

n normal years, as summer comes to an end, I’d be all sorts of excited for the new season’s trends, writing up my shopping list of must-haves for the upcoming fall/winter. However, in the “new normal” we find ourselves living with, things like fashion and trends have been put into a more flippant light than previously. With that being said, there ARE trends on the horizon for fall, and you may be needing to replace or upgrade pieces in your wardrobe for whatever the rest of your year has in store. Here is the rundown

of autumn/winter trends that may, or may not, make it to your closet One piece we should all have by now is at least one (if not several) masks. I know they can be uncomfortable, and a bit of a hassle, but from my perspective, masks are an uncharted accessory opportunity. By this point, and with Halloween on the horizon, now is the time to start having fun and stepping up your mask game. Try coordinating your masks to your outfit whenever you’re out and about. Come the colder weather, try matching your facemask to

your outerwear. I usually wear a black or gray mask to match my exercise clothes on my daily walks, but I am looking to mix things up with some patterned and brightly hued masks this fall. And for all of you knitters and croBernadette cheters out there, check Ulsamer out some free knit face mask patterns (the ones with a cloth lining) on YouTube! Now, instead of gifting everyone a handmade scarf, you can make masks (which are less time consuming) for everyone on

your holiday list. Another classic and on-trend item for this fall is the oversized button-up. Unlike the fitted version from the days when you had to report to an office, a looser cut shirt strikes the right balance between dressed professionally, yet comfortably, while also having a mix of masculine and feminine style. You can really have fun with button-ups in white, blue, stripes, or plaid as the weather (hopefully) starts to cool off by layering them over tee-shirts, under sweaters, and belt them over leggings. Another plus to the oversized version of the staple office shirt is the absence

of button gaps! Busty ladies know what I mean. Whether or not you’re working from home and/or social distancing, chances are jeans are still a wardrobe staple. Jeans are like beetles; even in a global crisis, they’ll still be around. Last year, the fall denim trend was all about high-rise and straight-leg. This year, denim styles are all over the board, from boot-cuts to tapered, to flared and loose. Hence, there’s no wrong way to wear jeans. Unless you are wearing a pair that makes you feel

uncomfortable or self-conscious, that’s a problem. But you can’t go wrong with denim that makes you feel good no matter the cut. An interesting trend for the coming fall/winter are ivory or off-white colored jeans. So, if you’re feeling in a denim rut, check out a more minimalist pair in a winter-white shade. Speaking of winter, now is the time to stock up on cold-weather basics. And, since we’ll probably be in hibernation mode more so than in winters past, consider indulging yourself with

for 2020. Come October, reach for velvet leggings with your favorite band t-shirt and shearling jacket. Even though we are still sweating through boiling hot days, it’s never too early to get a leg up on what you’re going to wear this fall. Hey, it’s something to look forward to, right? What’s more comforting than the thought of waking up to a chilly morning and enjoying a cup of coffee (or tea) in the perfect autumnal outfit of a button-down tucked into cream-colored jeans, a gray cardi, polka-dot socks, boots, and a cape? Yes, capes are back on trend this fall and are a great garment to elevate your walk to the park outfit.

some luxurious socks. Treat your feet well with high-quality socks that will not only keep you warm but also be supportive and colorful. I’m a big fan of Bombas, not only for the comfort and fun patterns but also with every purchase they donate a pair of socks to a homeless shelter. Vim & Vigr also have very cute compression legwear. Check out their knee socks in a variety of stripes and plaids for fall. The comfort-over-everything trend will definitely carry over to fall and winter. So, lean into cozy staples, like knitted dresses and gray turtlenecks. Velvet is a trend that comes and goes every few years, and it’s definitely here

mounting losses and no time to grieve and heal, our reservoirs slowly ran dry. We all know what happens when our reservoirs are empty — we start looking for a quick fix or someone to blame. The end result isn’t good. It’s not hard to identify someone with an empty reservoir. Just listen to what they’re saying: I can’t do this anymore. I don’t need this. I don’t need them. I’m done. I’m over it. I’m out. I quit. I hear those phrases more and more as the pandemic wears on. And I must confess, I’ve been talking that way too. My reservoir was pretty deep in March, but

Well, we certainly live in more uncertain times than before, but even in more stable times, no one knows for sure what the market is going to do. Trying to time the market perfectly usually doesn’t work out. The fact is that interest rates are at all time lows and real estate has always been a good long term investment, so while it might make sense to be a little more conservative in analyzing a property, it is still a good time to invest.

What makes a property a good investment? Simply put, there are many different factors that could make a property a good investment. The biggest factor for all types of investments is return on investment (ROI) or how much money it will make you. Being able to accurately calculate a property’s ROI, or its capitalization rate for multi-family or commercial real estate, is a big step in deciding if a property is a good investment. Your Realtor should be able to help you with calculating these equations and analyzing the results for the area of the investment.

How can I learn more about Real Estate Investing? There are many books and websites dedicated to real estate investing. Some of them are great, others are not. Biggerpockets.com is a favorite of mine for information on investing in all things real estate. But, the best way to learn is to find someone who is doing it successfully, buy them a beer, and ask questions...pay attention! Finding out habits and strategies of successful people and doing them is never a bad choice!

How long does it take to get a return on my investment? As with most things in real estate, it depends! For the more common types of investments, like buying and holding rental properties, it is almost always a great long term investment. As for fixing and flipping properties, they can be more of a short term investment that can REAL ESTATE AGENCY range anywhere from 2-6 months or more, depending on the nature of work being done, to see a return investment. space for the healing work to be done. So time doesn’t heal, but healing can’t happen without time. The pandemic was a global earthquake that rocked our world in March. The initial quake and subsequent shutdown were devastating. At that moment, most of us had a full reservoir of strength that sustained us in the initial crisis and loss. We quickly tapped into those reservoirs, rolled up our sleeves, and got to work. We encouraged and gave and innovated and sacrificed and helped in any way we could. We displayed a fierce determination to overcome. But again and again, the aftershocks of loss just kept hitting. Day after day. Week after week. Month after month. With

after five months of continuous loss, it’s been depleted — and I know it. None of us are getting the time we need to recover from one loss before the next one hits. Without time to grieve, cheap fixes and blame-shifting are destroying relationships. It’s happening everywhere — between husbands and wives, parents and children, church leaders and congregants, employers and employees, schools and parents, athletes and conferences, politicians and voters — everyone is worn out, on edge, and blaming each other for the mess. My friends, we need to take time. Time

to breathe. Time to think. Time to pray. Time to talk. Time to cry. Time to laugh. Time to rest. Time to exercise. We need to take time to heal and refill. No one can operate on empty. No one. Empathy Empathy is also a powerful force in dealing with grief. When your friend is hurting, your presence is the best present you can give. Loss usually results in a profound sense of loneliness. An empathetic friend provides the reassurance that we are not alone — that someone is with us. An empathetic friend reminds us that we will

Why? Because every person on planet earth is currently walking through their own valley of the shadow of death. No one is on the mountaintop. There is no one available to come down and sit with us in the ashes. No shoulder to cry on. No one able to declare, “You’re going to get through this!” All of humanity is suffering the never-ending aftershocks of loss — and we feel like no one understands or even cares. Worse yet, the lack of empathy is convincing us that our fellow travelers are the enemy. They aren’t the enemy. COVID-19 is the enemy. The only way we will defeat the enemy is by loving and serving each other. That’s our dilemma. How do we pour out empathy on others when our own reservoirs are dry? Is there any

hope? Keep Digging Friends, there is hope! We just need to keep digging. Listen, if we’re all walking in the valley of the shadow of death, then we’re not alone. Look around! Fellow travelers surround you. Yeah, we’re all bruised and beaten up and exhausted, but we’re in it together. We are not alone. Please, look around you. You can always find someone who is struggling more than you. Reach out your recently sanitized hand and pull them up. Why? Because you can. You think your reservoir is empty, but it isn’t. There is a hidden source inside of you. Until now, you didn’t know it existed, but it’s there. It was put in place by God for

this very moment. You just need to keep digging. How do I know it’s there? Well, this isn’t humanity’s first global-crisis rodeo. Our ancestors have walked through the valley of the shadow of death before us. They have shown us the resilience of the indomitable human spirit. If you look carefully, you’ll notice a subtle pathway under your feet left behind by those who have already traveled this way. They did it, and so can we. Take the time to grab ahold of someone’s hand and keep walking. You will quickly discover that the healing power of time and empathy flows equally into the receiver and the giver’s reservoir. We got this. We can do it. With faith, with God, and with each other, we can! So, keep digging!

make it through the darkness. They point us toward the light at the end of the tunnel. They give hope. Empathy is powerful, and when it is lacking, it is devastating. In the Garden of Eden, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with Him. In His grief, He just couldn’t be alone. Sadly, they didn’t get it. Their lack of empathy deepened His anguish. Later, as He cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” we sense that He is suffering the full anguish of loneliness. Thank goodness for His mother Mary, and John, and the others who stayed with Jesus at the foot of the cross. The heart can bear any grief as long as it knows it is not alone. That is the power of empathy. But empathy is in short supply these days.

Stop Wearing Underpants On Your Head! By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz

A

disposable mask from the grocery store, a Level 3 mask bought online, or a pricey designer number by Louis Vuitton, face masks will be with us for some time. Our country will overcome COVID-19 just like we’ve overcome other daunting challenges, stay upbeat. Until then, here is some advice. Never discuss politics or religion.

These were the rules for polite conversation. The new virus era rule? Don’t ask if they do or don’t wear a face mask. Your mask is always stained with ice cream, gravy, ketchup, or coffee because you forget to take your mask off before eating. It was only a matter of time until luxury fashion designers introduced chic and high-priced face masks from designers like Tory Burch and Gucci. With theaters closed for months, you miss going to the movies so much,

$5.50 for a candy bar, and $10.50 for popcorn seems like a bargain. Enough with posting selfies of folks wearing underpants as a face mask. Please, find a hobby that doesn’t involve underwear and a camera. I saw a talent show on TV featuring a ventriloquist and his dummy. Both of them were wearing face masks, and their act was so good you couldn’t even see the guy moving his lips. You’re working from home so much you start to think of your real spouse as your work spouse, and you feel like your cheating on your real work spouse. You miss the carefree days of eating grapes in the produce department without the fear of getting ill. You realize how touch screens in public (on soda dispensers and touch screen ordering boards at restaurants and ATMs) are used by hundreds of people every day and are magnets for germs. You don’t know where these people had their fingers. If you have a small child and see someone in public not wearing a mask, teach your child to loudly say, “That person isn’t wearing a mask! They’re going to make us sick!” Since fast food joints stopped putting

ketchup packets on the counter, you can’t take an extra 2 or 20 packets with you. That means you actually have to buy a bottle of ketchup, so you have some at home. At the start of the pandemic when grocery stores were running out of basic items. You panicked and bought 30 bags of rice, 40 cans of beans, 30 cans of Spam, 20 boxes of granola bars, a pack of Oreos, and two bags of cheese puffs. Buyer’s remorse sets in when you realized you hate rice, beans, and Spam. And granola gives you very bad gas. The Oreos and cheese puffs lasted an afternoon. When you’re out and about, how many times have you gotten a coffee and started drinking it before removing your mask? Wearing a face mask around your chin doesn’t count as wearing a face mask. You’re wearing a chin mask. You’ve become such an expert of germs; it makes you queasy thinking all the times you dropped food on the floor and ate it. You’ve become such an expert on germs; it makes you queasy thinking all the times you dropped food on the floor and felt fine because you gave it to your boss to eat.

County Hall Corner: Justice Defined By Larry Stout

S

ocial justice is a popular term these days, and like other terms that capture the public consciousness, they are often not understood. As Abraham Lincoln so wisely noted, imagining that a horse’s tail is a leg does not change the fact that a horse has four legs. Reality is what it is. Justice is defined as establishing fairness and equality of behavior toward all, particularly in the administration of law. This begins with the ‘rule of law,’ meaning the same rules apply to everyone, and these rules have the purpose of protecting the interest of the citizens and

not a favored few. The importance of this simple concept cannot be overemphasized.

world on a daily basis. Not surprisingly, it is very difficult to conduct normal business operations in a country where the law is so capricious. From personal experience in what are politely called, “developing nations,” bribes, kickbacks, payoffs, and such are the norm. And make no mistake; this directly impacts economic development. As the wise Rabbi Elazar Ben Azarishas so succinctly phrased it, “Where there is no bread, there is no Law. Where there is no Law, there is no bread.” But the law itself must be just. Segregation of races was the law of the land in the Deep South up until 1964 when the Civil Rights Act was passed, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. But notice here, this

P. J. O’Rourke wrote an incredibly insightful book entitled “Eat the Rich,” in which he sought to discover what made a country prosperous. He studied countries worldwide, and his analysis showed that what brought prosperity to a nation was not as much based on their form of government or natural resources, but the social structures upholding the society — primarily the rule of law. For example, imagine a case that would come before a Lycoming County Judge in which the judge knew the defendant and decided to give the person a break. Right after this case would be another individual charged with exactly the same offense and the judge sentences that person harshly. We would be outraged because this would be unfair and unjust. Yet, this very scenario of inequitable justice is played out in countries all over the

COUNTY HALL act ‘outlawed’ actions that were in place, it did not determine what should replace them. The Civil Rights Act was a no-brainer as such, but the much more challenging effort was to determine what laws should be established that would be just. And that is not easy. The past five decades are testimony of that fact. Law itself is empty unless it is enforced. From personal experience as a township supervisor, I remember being asked by our constituents to enforce a particular ordinance on our books, only for us to frankly admit we did not have the enforcement means to do so. The opposite was true also. When the Chesapeake Bay Initiative Act of 1998 was enacted, the federal government’s hammer

came upon us to pass ordinances such as septic system pumping requirements that were strictly enforced by the federal authorities. So, back to justice again, a law must be necessary, equitable, and enforceable to be just. However, the reality of life is that all this may still lead to an imbalance in justice. For example, Lycoming County was struggling with holding jury trials due to the COVID restrictions, but the delay was not impacting those on bail as much as those who could not afford bail and were incarcerated. Two individuals facing the same charges — one is free walking around (with a mask, of course), and the other is locked up 24/7 in the county

the credit of Lycoming County, the law enforcement and judicial system work extremely well, and although not perfect, to be sure, the leaders in these fields are firstrate. In personal conversations with many of the key individuals, it is amazing how much they are constantly examining their organization’s practices and seeking to carry on their responsibilities more effectively for the general public. A word of warning to those who take a “scofflaw” attitude, justice in Lycoming County, never takes a vacation. At the same time, those who are advocating for a more clear definition of ‘social justice’ in the changing climate of our times have a right to be heard, and should be heard as well, because the Great American Experiment that began in 1776 is still a work in process today.

prison. Is that just? In Lycoming County, we are not experiencing the turmoil that we see in big cities and other large population areas, but make no mistake about it, the same issues are here with us as well. Are our laws enforced equitably, or does living in certain neighborhoods get better protection than others — or perhaps more than is necessary that portrays a menacing atmosphere? Is it fair and just that because of municipal boundaries, one person pays far more in taxes for these services than a neighbor just across the street? How much police presence is prudent at a demonstration to maintain order, and how much is too much that appears intimidating to those who are expressing dissent from popular opinion? We must humbly admit that reasonable people may disagree on these points. To

The Roving Sportsman…

Summer Coyote Hunting By Jon Pries

W

ith midday temperatures rising into the high 80s and low 90s and unpleasant humidity to match, the best way to cool off the house at night with some fresh air is to sleep with the windows open. In doing so, you might find yourself being awakened in the middle of the night by the barking, yipping or howling of nearby coyotes. Such has been happening in recent weeks and it is a reminder that this is prime time to hunt coyotes. If we as hunters and conservationists are concerned at all about the future of any of our game birds and animals, then we need to take a serious look at doing our part in helping to control or reduce the coyote densities that exist in our area. A day of hiking throughout your favorite hunting locations will reveal coyote tracks and droppings that are a stark reminder that coyotes are busy every day hunting the very same tracts of land that you spend time hunting. These lean, mean hunting machines spend hours covering miles of trails and logging roads, usually in the cover of darkness, day in and day out in pursuit of whatever food they can come across. They will often focus on mice in the fields, chipmunks in the wooded areas, but will not hesitate to take a turkey or deer if the opportunity arises. They are a prime predator of newly born fawns which are most susceptible in the

first few weeks of their life. These next few months, particularly as the parents are teaching the pups to hunt, provide an excellent opportunity to hunt these predators. Particularly when they are hungry, they are often more responsive to calling, and while daytime calling can work, waiting until the hours of darkness will usually be more effective. Asking a landowner for permission to hunt coyotes or other predators on his land is often met with a positive response. It might also open the door to permission to hunt other game at a later date. Once you have obtained permission, make sure you contact him prior to hunting so that he knows you will be on the property, particularly if you are hunting at night. In the early days of coyote calling, a rabbit in distress call was certainly the most popular, and was very effective as well. A fawn in distress call is equally effective. While both of these are easily produced with a hand held mouth call, the introduction of electronic callers has opened up a limitless array of sounds that will lure a wily coyote within gun range. Caution should be used so as to not overcall, which is a usual tendency with either hand held or electronic callers. Recently I came across a series of coyote vocalizations that has been proving to be highly effective and are very well presented when using an electronic call such as the ones produced by the Pennsylvania based company, FOXPRO. This is a 3-part

yodel. If you are calling from an open field area, these first two sound sequences can be done at a high volume setting. You are trying to get a coyote’s attention. If you are in a woods setting, you might reduce the volume somewhat. The third and final sound is the “clincher.” It is the coyote pup in distress sound, played at a lower volume and played continuously. This call, presented at the lower volume, can be run for five to ten minutes and that is usually enough time for any interested coyote to cover the distance and present an effective shot. Setting up and calling coyotes is not effective every single time, but when it does happen, it is extremely exciting and you can feel good about helping reduce the predation in your favorite hunting haunts.

sequence of sounds. The first sound is a short sequence of just two or three male coyote howls, followed by several minutes of silence. You may want to monitor this period of silence as it is sometimes difficult to judge unless you are actually timing it, and it is a critical step. Repeat two or three male howls and follow them with another period of silence. Be alert to any movement in the distance, but do not be alarmed if there is none. This call is made to alert any nearby coyote, not necessarily bring him running. The second sound is a female coyote yodel (all of these sounds are available on the FOXPRO electronic callers). Emit two or three minute of the female yodel, then allow several minutes of silence, followed by a second period of two to three of the

ran back to the truck, jumped in and took off only to see the grouse running behind me; I eventually left him behind — strange behavior indeed. After going to the internet, I found a number of similar accounts like mine and my son Brian’s, and I’m sure there are some reading this that have had somewhat similar encounters with grouse. I’ve tried to come up with some reason why this behavior occurs, but I really don’t have much to offer. Some have suggested that it may be due to the birds breeding behavior, but my encounter was well after the breeding season. Some have suggested that the grouse may be exhibiting its territorial rights and that may have some validity since some have actually become more aggressive over time. Another interesting theory that I heard

was that the grouse may have eaten some fermented wild grapes; you guessed it — the grouse was “drunk.” It never occurred to me that I should try administering a sobriety test; you know, have the grouse stand with one claw raised while balancing on the other, or draw a line and have the bird try to walk a straight line. In the meantime, I plan to concentrate my grouse hunting this fall in wooded areas with a good amount of fermented wild grapes. If there is any truth to the “drunk theory,” I may have a chance of dropping at least one intoxicated bird! I want to wish Terry Kachelries a very happy 74th birthday! Terry is from Jersey Shore, I hear that he has been reading my column all but from the beginning. I appreciate you reading and hope you have a great birthday!

ago, I was driving up a backwoods road, well away from any homes, when I saw a grouse walk out in front of my vehicle. Not wanting to hit the bird, I stopped the truck and got out only to find the grouse walking around by the back driver side tire all the while making those subtle “purring” sounds like a chicken. The grouse walked right up to me and we chatted back and forth for a time neither of us knowing what the other was saying. Every now and then the grouse would peck my hand as I gently tried to usher it off to the side of the dirt roadway. When I turned to go back to the truck, the grouse quickly followed me like a little puppy. I repeated the nudging process, but each time moving the grouse further from the truck. Finally, after a 20-yard nudge I

WW: What’s this August like with no World Series? Lupacchino: “It has been a very strange one. I’ve already watched a few replays ESPN has aired, and I am hopeful they will show more. While it isn’t the real thing, it will help ease the void we are experiencing. I really look forward to these two weeks every year. I keep in touch with other Uncles, and we discuss our past teams and reminisce about the good times we have had together.” Girio: “I am definitely missing it, as this would have been my 23rd year. As the mornings turn cooler and the evenings turn darker, it’s a reminder we will not be seeing family, friends, and other volunteers that work the Series each year. We won’t be seeing or hearing from former players or coaches that would call us when they came back to the Series. It is, in many ways, a reunion with people sharing memories. It is rewarding for former players to share what they are now doing and to hear their

memories of their time spent here. There is magic in the air, and it is truly a Field of Dreams for those coaches and players.” Cromley: “The best I can say is “empty.” I am missing the arrival of one of my team host partners who stays at our house, Chuck Deluca, from North Carolina. Chuck was the coach of the 2002 Southeast team that I had hosted. I miss my other team host partner, Stan Helt. I surely miss the many friends from the kitchen staff, housekeeping, ushers, grounds crew, and iHeart radio’s “Man in the Crowd,” Tom Speicher. It is always a thrill meeting my team upon their arrival to International Grove and seeing their faces light up when they walk onto Lamade Stadium for the first time.” For Lupacchino, it will be the first time since 1992 he will be home to celebrate his wife’s August 25th birthday. Girio is spending the time with family and friends. For Cromley, it is a void he finds difficult to fill. “There is no substitute for such a unique experience. The Little League World Series is a very, very special event and one that has given my wife and me many friends throughout the world.” Lupacchino, Girio, Cromley, and Whiteman are just four of the dedicated volunteers who are proud to call themselves Little League “Uncles and Aunts.” Like all of you, they find this August all too different from what we have come to experience in the past. We are all left to hope that the dreaded opponent COVID-19 will be struck outcome the 2021 Little League World Series.

kitchen, housekeeping, and grounds crew members, along with the lasting friendships of managers, coaches, and the players are wonderful. Being an uncle has allowed me to play a small role in the experience of teams coming to South Williamsport. I have memories to last a lifetime. I’ve received invitations to college graduations, have attended weddings, received birth announcements, and continue to stay in touch with many national and international team members, coaches, and managers and their families.”

Living Well…

Weirdo or Creative Genius?

W

hen we think of the word weird, we often think of something that is strange and different, and it often has a negative connotation. When a person is called weird, it is usually meant as an insult. It highlights a person’s difference from the rest of the tribe and, though standing out is something that society says it rewards, it is most often punished. At our core, humans do not like what is different and fear that which they do not understand. Some time ago I wrote an article for another publication titled, “Embrace Your Inner Weirdo.” In the article I used a specific definition that defined a weirdo

is someone who wasn’t afraid to be themselves. Though I do concede that some level of conformity is necessary, such as not stealing or hurting others, genius and creativity are, by their very definitions, forms of weirdness as they are different and unique qualities. Albert Einstein, everyone’s favorite, wildhaired genius, once said that we cannot solve problems using the same kind of thinking that we used when we created them. He was actually referring to the creation of atomic weapons, but this rough quote holds true for many things, including tapping into our inner weirdo. This means embracing outside-of-the-box thinking.

In an article titled “The Creative Benefits of Being Weird,” published by the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkley, the authors warned to not underestimate weirdos. They are CEOs and scientists — artists and visionaries. They are the people creating disruptive Dave companies and inventing Bellomo the latest technologies. They are the ones that found social movements that change the world. If it were not for weirdos, nothing would change and that would be a bad thing. There would be no progress, no innovation, and nothing to make the world better. We all have a little weirdo inside of us trying to get out. JP Sears, comedian and motivational speaker, gave a speech that went viral entitled the Virtues of Weirdness. In the speech, Sears says that underneath our clothes, all people are just a bunch of naked weirdos. What he means by this is that humans all possess some innate uniqueness and it is this uniqueness that makes us special. The clothes in his metaphor are the societal norms that discourage creativity and force us to hide who we truly are for fear of being labeled different. When the average person follows social norms like a sheep and bases their actions completely on what they are told by authority figures, weirdos will question what they are told. They will be far less likely

to listen to to social “rules” and will instead venture into previously unknown territory. They are the creators and the innovators because on some level they don’t know that what they dream should be impossible. Weirdos think unconventionally and, while some of their ideas will fail, will succeed in breaking new ground for humanity in art, science, and other disciplines. Everyone has the potential for weirdness/ creativity. I do not believe creativity is learned, only developed. Embrace it! It is this inner uniqueness that sparks new ideas and helps us to carve new trails in whatever it is that we are passionate. Weirdos think differently. They sometimes having trouble filtering out stray thoughts. Sometimes this is problematic, but other times this produces gems that can be utilized at a later time. Understand that everyone has the capacity to view the world in a unique way and has something to offer to humanity. Instead of stifling these ideas, we should be celebrating them and using them for the greater good. Make no mistake, things that are different will often face criticism and rejection. You will be mocked for your ideas and unappreciated. Do not let this stop you. In time, being your true, creative self will pay off. You will be happier and more fulfilled and will be less concerned of what others think of you. Life is so short. Be who you are, weirdo and all. Who knows, you might just come up the next great idea or invention or write the next great American novel. Regardless, embrace your inner uniqueness. Be open to new ideas and experiences and live life to its fullest.
