I’m Not Biden It!

F

or the past couple of years, I have written that everyday hard-working Democrats need to take their party back. It is no longer the party of past presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, or even President William Jefferson Clinton. What began during the Obama administration has carried on under the current leadership of the Democratic National Committee and those currently elected and appointed to lead the party. The party has moved way past liberalism, which is intended to be all-inclusive and acceptive, to beyond socialistic and now has morphed into fascist ideals. The agenda of these selfproclaimed intellectually elite is wagging the dog of its democratic followers. You must either agree with them 100% across the board, or your values, thoughts, and ideas are not acceptable. Democratic voters spoke loudly when presidential candidate Joe Biden shocked the world during the primary’s version of Super Tuesday. He buried all candidates with these beyond socialistic ideas and basically won the nomination for president that night. This rocked the DNC and those that have hijacked the Democratic Party, and temporarily slowed their roll in an attempt to change the very way our Nation is governed within the Constitution. There was only one candidate that had any of the old school values most Democrats still believe in, Mr. Joe Biden. The complete opposite of Joe Biden on the primary

2020 Kickoff

campaign election trail was California Senator Kamala Harris, who absolutely disdained former VP Biden and everything he has stood for during his political career. She made it beyond clear this man was everything the new Progressive Democratic Party was not and racist to his very core. She spewed complete hatred and contempt for Mr. Biden and demanded he apologize for his actions of the past. I really thought she was going to kick his astronaut while the whole world was watching. So, after the American democratic voter had spoken and former VP Joe Biden is the presidential candidate, who does the DNC and the most powerful democrats behind the scenes choose as a vice-presidential candidate? Kamala Harris. How can any self-respecting Democrat accept this? It’s basically a one-fingered salute to the voters, emphatically showing the DNC will take the party wherever they want, and your vote doesn’t matter. Biden’s resounding surprise win was clearly a vote of disapproval for Harris and all like her. What should be viewed as equally important and dangerous to all Americans is candidate Biden’s mental competency to serve as president. This was discussed emphatically after Harris buried him in the early primary debates as Mr. Biden seemed completely lost. Presidential candidate Biden along with Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, belong on the poster for why our Nation needs term limits

across-the-board. Let’s move on and talk about how candidate Biden’s beliefs align with the Progressive Party of Kamala Harris, and all these enlightened individuals the mainstream media push on us each and every day. I’m sorry, Jim not enlightened — Webb, Jr. Progressive by their own choice of description. Candidate Biden is an old, white man who is racist, which was allegedly proven by Progressive candidate Harris. He loves drinking and young women — that has been proven by Joe Biden. He is completely out of touch with the younger American voter of today; if you need proof of this, I can’t help you, just go to TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, or even old-fashioned television. So, it is obvious that candidate Biden would not be the first choice of the enlightened Progressive leaders of the Democratic Party of today. How on God’s green earth can any American buy this complete bullshitzu, or is it just the complete hatred fanned by the mainstream media and Democratic Party of President Donald Trump? I honestly believe the DNC would have put Satan on the ticket if it meant getting rid of Trump. Joe Biden is being used by the leadership of the New Progressive Not So Democratic Party as a Trojan-horse; if elected, those behind him will continue pushing their fascist agenda. It has been proven none of their candidates can win on their own.

So, they need ol’ Democrat Joe to open the door. I do not believe for a second that the overwhelming majority of democrats that vote want to empower the ideas of Nancy Pelosi, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilan Omar, Andrew Cuomo, Chuck Schumer, Amy Klobuchar, Diane Feinstein, and the list goes on and on. These people are flatout out of their minds and want to take your freedom, money, and the American way of life. The first thing that should disqualify anyone from holding any leadership position within the federal government inside the Beltway is if you’re from California. When are the American people going to wake up and look at the tarnished Golden State, and what beyond liberal leadership has done there? The state was flat out bankrupt long before Coronavirus. California is blessed with everything needed to operate with a financial surplus not only as a state but by size and mass as its own country. The state’s numbers and rankings are abysmal in everything from education to homelessness, to taxes beyond belief. It is a working model of failed socialistic policy. Yet these people keep showing up in powerful positions in Washington, D.C. California ranks as a bottom feeder in everything you want to be at the top of the list on, and at the top of every ranking, states want to avoid. Come November, voters cannot let their dislike for President Trump empower the Progressive agenda of fascism. If the people behind Mr. Biden win, our Nation loses. God Bless America.

his is probably the eleventy-billionth time I have made a Fall Bucket List. Every year I get this laundry list of ideas in my head that I want to do before the leaves and snow hit the ground. Usually, I manage like two of them. But once again, I’m going to put my list out there and hope that I can get at least three done this year! I did pare it down a bit this year in hopes that it would make it easier to accomplish! Ready? Let’s go… • Visit a Pumpkin Patch – OK, easy enough, we have plenty around, and while carving pumpkins isn’t really my forte, I live with a couple of budding artists, so I think we can manage. Both Tom Styer’s and Green Barn Berry Farm have pumpkin patches and lots of fun fall activities, so I can probably check a couple of these off by heading to one of these! Kohls Stony Hill Tree Farm outside of Milton also has some great fall family fun! • Apple Picking – Marshalek’s, Wentzler’s, and Steinbacher’s all offer great opportunities for apples in the fall! • Have a Bonfire – Well, lucky for me, I can do this right in my own backyard! This is a great way to spend an evening with friends and neighbors! There is something about spending a Saturday night around a fire with those near and dear that just makes it feel like fall! • Eat S’Mores – Well, this just goes hand in hand with the bonfire, doesn’t it? Two birds and all that! Ooey, gooey goodness abounds in my backyard this fall!

Timberland Boots

• Visit a Corn Maze – Again, there are a lot of great places around to find a corn maze. We went to Kohl’s last year, but it’s always fun to see how they change from year to year! Steph • Make Chili, or Nordstrom Goulash, or a Pot Roast, or Beef Stew – OK, OK, you get the point. There are just some meals that are better in the fall and winter. Even with central air, no one wants to spend a hot summer day over the stove. So these meals are better suited for cooler weather. I’ll even share my FAVORITE beef stew recipe with you! Irish Beef Stew: Ingredients: • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 1/4 pounds well-marbled chuck beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces (NOT extra-lean) • 6 large garlic cloves, minced • 6 cups beef stock or canned beef broth • 1 cup of Guinness beer • 1 cup of red wine (just make sure it’s a decent wine, if you wouldn’t drink it, don’t cook with it) • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1 tablespoon dried thyme • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 2 bay leaves • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter • 3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled, cut into

1/2-inch pieces (about 7 cups) • 1 large onion, chopped • 2 cups 1/2-inch pieces peeled carrots • Salt and Pepper • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Directions: Heat olive oil in heavy large pot (I use my dutch oven) over medium-high heat. Lightly salt the beef pieces. Working in batches if necessary, add the beef (do not crowd the pan, or the meat will steam and not brown) and cook, without stirring, until nicely browned on one side, then use tongs to turn the pieces over. Continue to cook in this manner until all sides are browned, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 1 minute. Add beef stock, Guinness, red wine, tomato paste, sugar, thyme, Worcestershire sauce and bay leaves. Stir to combine. Bring mixture to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, then cover and simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally. While the meat and stock is simmering, melt butter in another large pot over medium heat. Add potatoes, onion and carrots. Sauté vegetables until golden, about 20 minutes. Set aside until the beef stew in step one has simmered for one hour. Add vegetables to beef stew. Simmer uncovered until vegetables and beef are very tender, about 40 minutes. Discard bay leaves. Tilt pan and spoon off fat. Transfer stew to serving bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with parsley and serve. (Can be prepared up to 2 days ahead. Cool slightly. Refrigerate uncovered until cold, then cover and refrigerate. Bring to simmer before serving.) So, there you have it! My Fall Bucket List – planned out and ready to go! I’ll let you know in December how it worked out for me ;-)

Although there will still be balloon launches early morning and late afternoon, weather permitting, they will not be selling rides to paying passengers. Obviously, it is impossible to socially distance in a balloon basket that may be in the air 45 minutes to an hour. But please, come out and see the balloons and weather permitting, there will be a tethered balloon onsite with COVID precautions taken and enforced! Organizers appreciate the fact the commercially licensed balloon pilots, organized by Balloonmeister, Rebecca Elkins, will be here to add color to the skies! We will also have air show performances that will include Geronimo Skydiving (sponsored by Sheetz), Jason Flood, (stunt pilot sponsored by Lycoming Engines), and Paradigm Aviator, exciting paramotor performances, all overseen by David Schultz Airshows. Dialed Action BMX shows have always been quite popular at this event, and they are happy to welcome them back for three shows on Saturday and two on Sunday. Patricia a. “Pat” (Miller) agnoni

Patricia A . “ Pat ” ( Miller) Agnoni, 83, of Williamsport, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020 at the Gatehouse surrounded by her family.

By Lou Hunsinger, Jr.

A

She was married on June 1, 1957 to John J. Agnoni, who survives, and would have celebrated 63 years together. Patricia was born on March 24, 1937 in Williamsport and was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Ethel (Minnier) Agnoni. She graduated from S. Williamsport High School. Patricia owned and worked for Hum-Dinger restaurant for 46 years and retired in 2017. She was a member of the St. Joseph Worker Parish-Annunciation and was on a bowling league. She enjoyed watching sports, cooking, reading and doing crossword puzzles. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters; Teri L. Spooner (Douglas) of Cogan Station and Michelene M. “Mickey” Golden (Todd) of Loyalsock, three grandchildren; Grant Golden, Joseph Spooner and Jamie Spooner and one great-grandson; Austin Spooner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings; William Miller, Albert “Miff” Miller, Richard Miller and Betty Miller. The family held a private graveside service in Wildwood Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Maneval Allen Redmond Funeral Home, 500 West 4th St., Williamsport. documentary that was put together jointly by local resident Alivia Tagliaferri and members of the 9/11 Memorial Ride Coalition three years ago will be broadcast by the local Public Broadcasting System affiliate, WVIA TV in Pittston, on September 11, 12, 13, and 14. This broadcast takes place in time for the 19th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that are remembered by the Memorial Ride Coalition and, of course, by all Americans. “Remember. Honor. Ride. 9/11 Memorial Ride” is a 30-minute documentary film about the founding and the organic growth of the 9-11 Memorial Ride, a 42-mile motorcycle parade in Lycoming County that draws 10,000 bikers and over

20,000 community spectators. The documentary, directed by Alivia Tagliaferri, highlights the stories of the organizers, riders, and its supporting communities. “I like to bill the production as “Father Manno and a Cast of Thousands,” ‘Tank’ Baird, one of the members of the Ride Coalition, told Webb Weekly. He was referring to Father John Manno, who was one of the stalwart supporters of the Memorial Ride and perhaps its spiritual heart. Manno participated in all the rides until he died in 2019. “When I moved back home to Williamsport and learned about the 9-11 Memorial Ride, I just thought it was a tremendous tribute to all those who died that day and all those who served — and continue to serve,” said Alivia Tagliaferri,

parade held on the anniversary of 9/11/2001. Thousands participate in the memorial service and ride. The 42-mile escorted ride encompasses 14 different municipalities, with the routes lined with patriotic individuals, school children, veterans, and first responders. According to Baird, the Ride Memorial Coalition is contracted by WVIA PBS for two years, which will take us into the 20th anniversary of the attack. “As more and more events are canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, WVIA hopes this broadcast helps the participants celebrate the annual tradition safely in their homes as they anticipate the events return in 2021,” said Ben Payavis, WVIA Chief Content Officer. WVIA will air the documentary at 7 p.m. Friday, September 11. It will rebroadcast it on Saturday, September 12, at 9 p.m., Sunday, September 13, at 11:30 a.m., and Monday, September 14th at 7:30 p.m.

who helped produce the documentary. “Thinking about the millions of firemen, policemen, military service members, and caregivers who stand ready to answer the call to serve at a moment’s notice — they’re the inspiration for this ride and for this film.” Tagliaferri added, “I think the Ride has become very meaningful to the 10,000 riders that participate and the more than 20,000 spectators who view the Ride along its 42mile route. The documentary is a wonderful way to show the multiple locations and communities that the Ride takes place and how widespread the interest in it is. I think the documentary will touch a lot of people.” The purpose of the 9/11 Memorial Coalition is to be a constant reminder to the public of the heroism and dedication of those who sacrificed their lives for us. County Hall Corner: Coincidence or Providence? By Larry Stout

O

n some very rare occasions, the COVID shutdowns have actually produced changes that turned out better than what was originally planned. This was true to some degree as the Lycoming Tioga Sullivan Emergency Medical Services Council was unable to hold their annual banquet this year and thus presented their yearly awards for Lycoming County at the County Commissioner’s Meeting on Tuesday, August 25th. While a banquet is certainly a wonderful event to gather together all the area workers in the EMS field who get to recognize one of their own for outstanding achievement, this year’s cancellation resulted in these prestigious honors getting a wider recognition than they otherwise would have received. The irony was how the event itself displayed the people receiving these awards. For example, the first was the 2020 Emergency Medical Responder Award given to Stacey Duffield. One reason why Stacey was receiving the

award was her commitment to her work, which she displayed by arriving late because she was busy on a search and rescue. Serving for some 19 years as a Lead Forest Ranger with the Department of Conservation and National Resources, Stacey coordinated the Naloxone program for the Tiadaghton State Forest. Even when DCNR no longer required EMR certification for its rangers, Stacey maintained her certification due to commitment to public safety. Like all those being honored this day, she always did more than what was expected. The Lycoming County 911 Telecommunicator of the Year, Dustin Williams, was also a no-show because

American Heart Association instructing CPR and ACLS, further imparting his knowledge to a new generation of EMS providers. Suzanne Dively Smith was Lycoming County’s EMT of the Year, a member of the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company, and actively responds to 911 calls and routine transfers. On top of this, Suzanne also serves as secretary of the Lycoming County EMS Council and a member of the Old Lycoming Township Fireman’s Relief Association and on the Susquehanna Regional EMS

as a corpsman in the US Navy, John Magyar would become an instructor in EMT, CPR, First Aid Infection Control Vehicle Rescue, and many other courses and classes over his 40-year career, also instructing for Bucks County Community College, Harrisburg Area Community College, and Penn College. At the same time, John served as a volunteer for the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company, where he is a lifetime member, and also served with them as an EMT, rescue technician, ambulance captain, secretary, junior advisor, and treasurer. John W. Magyar has three sons who all went into emergency services — JJ, Mike, and Mark. It was the youngest, Mark, who received the award on behalf of his father. And yet another twist of fate is that John Magyar’s eldest son, JJ Magyar, worked with Kline Dewire, and sadly, was with him on that fateful December night in 2007 when a thoracic aneurysm took his life. Whether all these circumstances were coincidence or providence, I lean on the side that there must be many heavyduty guardian angels watching over these amazing public servants. They continually go that extra mile to answer the emergency services call for help. We thank you all!

Operations Committee. The award holding the highest esteem is the Kline A. Dewire Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award, and this year it was quite unusual. The namesake of the award, Kline Dewire, was born in Hughesville, and when he graduated from East Lycoming High School in 1980, his father Fred talked to John Magyar, owner of an emergency transport service, about his teenage son’s future. Kline had taken an EMT course while in high school and was now thinking about attending paramedic school. Magyar met Kline and was so impressed with him that he hired him to work with his company, teaching him many aspects of the EMS field. Kline Dewire went on to become an outstanding EMS responder and instructor himself. Kline remained friends with his mentor until Kline’s untimely death while on a call of duty on December 17th, 2007. Coincidentally or providentially, that same man, John W. Magyar, was named this year’s Kline A. Dewire Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award winner. John suffered a stroke last year and is still recovering, so he was unable to receive the award. It was a shame because he truly deserved to be recognized in person. Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

Style File: Preppy

T

his article is the first in a series of “Style Files,” where I’ll break down common modes in fashion and dressing, from their origin to their evolution, and how they are seen and worn today. First up, preppy! The term “preppy” derives from private, university-preparatory schools, primarily in the northeastern part of the United States. This term is also commonly associated with the Ivy

League and the WASP demographic. For men, preppy fashion has its roots in the style of Ivy League school dress that had been established by the 1950s. Hence, the preppy style originated with variations on the private school uniform, which consisted of a button-down shirt, tie, trousers, V-neck sweater (or sweater vest), polished, lacedup shoes, and of course, a blazer with the school emblem. The casual

version can be seen in the sports apparel associated with private schools, like rugby and polo shirts, equestrian apparel, boating sportswear, and hunting tweeds. In fact, prep and Bernadette boarding schools Ulsamer in the northeast were heavily influenced by their British predecessors, which is why upper-crust English fashion is also considered preppy.

For women, this style also originated from the academic realm, as preppyinfluenced fashion emerged in the 1960s, taking female students at the Seven Sisters Colleges (sister institutions of the Ivy League) as direct inspiration. The women attending these higher-echelon institutions often wore tailored skirts, low heels, shift dresses, and simple but refined blouses, and jewelry for a tasteful and sophisticated “uniform.” They would often match the male counterparts with a blazer in school

colors or include nautical features (like boat shoes) in their method of dressing. By the 1980s, brands like J.Crew, Lacoste, and Dooney & Burke brought this campus aesthetic to the mass market, selling polo shirts, argyle sweaters, chinos, madras, and oxford shirts to whoever could afford them regardless of their pedigree. For much of that decade, and into the 90s, prep was worn by more of the middle-class, yet still dominated the country-club. Preppy apparel was clean-cut, but not necessarily cutting-edge fashion. During the aughts and 2010s, preppy style saw a dramatic revolution, particularly from the former bastion of all things prep — J.Crew. This brand made preppy, more fashionfocused, and eclectic. Sporting a preppy look nowadays is not just a copy of the full-on school-uniform aesthetic, but more so mixing the tweedy schoolboy blazer with more causal and unexpected pieces like a graphic t-shirt, ripped jeans, and sneakers. Or, taking a traditional

preppy piece, like a leather loafer, and rendering it in a bolder fabric/ pattern, like leopard-printed suede. Additionally, staple prints like plaid and argyle come in daring colors like hot pink and neon green, and khakis are not cropped and available in fashion-forward prints like polka dot and camo. Prep today is more irreverent and bolder than the hallowed halls of its origin. People are mixing preppy styles with more modern pieces like side-striped tracks pants and tie-dyed sweatshirts. Prep is no longer limited to the lord of the manor’s ascots and grandma’s pearls. You can personalize your prep to fit into your own aesthetic. For me, I love a tailored blazer and wear it with just about everything, from leggings to jeans, to maxidresses, and dress pants. Of course, I wouldn’t say no to a plaid skirt with a bomber jacket, or a matching sweater with leather trousers. The current state (and future) of preppy, like all styles, lies in making it your own and finding ways to express yourself.

off work to see them off to the school bus with me. They still got new clothes, shoes, lunchboxes and picked out their first day of school special dinner momma makes them where they tell us all about their first day! When they came home with smiles that first day, it made me so happy. They made the best out of a new situation. As for 9-11, they can’t take that away either. A day as Americans we will never forget. We will still ride to remember, and I’ll throw up that peace sign whether folks are on the sidelines or not. This may be a year we will never forget too. I have a feeling a lot of people feel the same way I do, and will be there with their flags, supporting the remembrance of 9-11. Gazette and Bulletin September 5, 1940 Bees Buy Manno

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

t long last patience has been rewarded in the case of Don Manno, Williamsport’s all-around Italian

athlete. After knocking about in the minors and the semi-pro ranks for half a dozen years, Manno is on the threshold of the biggest moment of his career. He reports to the Boston Bees at the close of the three-EYE league playoffs, having been purchased by the Bees from Evansville, Indiana, farm Tuesday along with Buster Bray, hard hitting outfielder. The latter, however, will not report until next spring because of ill health. The popular local youth, batting in the clean-up spot for Evansville, is hitting at an even .300 clip for the Baby Bees, but more important he is

a cinch to cart off the runs batted in crown of the Class B circuit. Through Labor Day, Don had 101 RBIs to his credit, it was this factor, plus his hustle and great competitive spirit, that convinced the officials of the parent Boston club that Manno was ready for a trial under the “big top.” Not only has Don been the bulwark of the Evansville offense, but he has also given a splendid account of him. Versatile as they come, he has divided his time this season between the outfield and first base. He is currently stationed at first. Manno, who once played with the Williamsport Grays under the assumed name of “Don Dixon,” in 1933, really broke into organized ball in 1935 with Norfolk, New York Yankee farm in the Piedmont League, after starring in football, basketball and track at Williamsport High and Dickenson College.

garage in 1950. This association with Triumph lasted the rest of Mr. Fisher’s career, operating the dealership until 1998. In the 1950s, “Fast” Ed Fisher was a leading road racer, winning the Laconia Classic in 1951. While linked to road racing, Fisher was also noted for his accomplishments on dirt-tracks and he continued into his 70s, competing in hill climbs and drag racing. His son Gary has succeeded his father in road racing. Gary, nineteen years later, won the Loudon Classic (which replaced the Laconia), making them the only father-son to ever win the competition. Impressively, Mr. Fisher was inducted into the American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame in 2002. This will provide a rare opportunity for you to meet a motorcycling legend! The summer exhibit, “HarleyDavidson vs. Indian Wars: Vintage Motorcycles at the Taber Museum,” is open for touring Tuesdays through Fridays, 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Saturdays, 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and Sundays, 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. There is a charge to view the exhibit. The exhibit contains twenty-vintage motorcycles, including several that once belonged to Fisher.

n conjunction with the current vintage motorcycle exhibit, ‘Fast’ Eddie Fisher will be appearing at the Taber Museum on Saturday, September 12th, 2020, from 1pm until 3pm. He will be available to autograph copies of the catalogues, calendars, posters and magnets produced for the exhibit. Mr. Fisher has graciously agreed to participate in this as a fundraiser for the museum. To motorcycle enthusiasts, ‘Fast’ Eddie Fisher needs no introduction. However, for readers who may not know his impressive biography, here are a few details. Born in 1925, Mr. Fisher’s first motorcycle was a 1941 Indian Scout Pony. While in the Army during World War II, Fisher trained as a motor mechanic. He was able to have his bike shipped to the Army base. Eventually serving in Germany, he returned home and purchased an Indian Chief motorcycle. He worked as a mechanic for an Indian dealership in Lancaster and became a factory rider for the company. In the early 1950s, however, Englandbased Triumph was aggressively entering the American market. Fisher became a Triumph dealer in 1952 after he opened a small gas station and

Islamic and pagan. However, the antizurkhaneh stance was later reversed by the Iranian Republic, and they once again became recognized as a source of national pride. In fact, they were often cited as the reason that Iranians did so well in international wrestling and weightlifting competitions. While part of a pahlavani training session involves prayer, the majority of time is spent on strength training and combat practice. Traditional equipment would include large wooden clubs known as meels; a sang, which is a wooden shield; and a bow-

shaped iron weight called a Kaman. The athletes move in time to a drum called a morshed, and a typical workout would include body-weight exercises such as squat and push-up variations. In addition, the participants would work with meels, singles for beginners, and pairs for advanced practitioners, and the implements would be used in movements called casts, which is a circular movement behind the back. Each cast would be performed in a low, middle, or high fashion, depending upon the difficulty sought. Meels come in a variety of sizes. Smaller

meels start at around 10-15 pounds and could be used for hundreds of casts in a single workout. Large meels, usually 20-60 pounds, were intended mainly for more advanced strength training. It is said that Pahlavan Mustafa Tousi, pictured above, performed thousands of meel casts daily. After work with the sang and Kaman, every session would end with combat wrestling practice. Over time, a practitioner that gained mastery over the physical exercises and exemplified high moral character might attain the rank of pahlevan, or hero.

Later, in the 700s, the training system became known as vazesh-e pahlavani, or heroic sport, and philosophical and spiritual components were incorporated into the training. The popularity of zurkhaneh and their training methods waxed and waned in popularity through the centuries. Still, the facilities were actively discouraged after the Iranian Revolution in the late 1970s, as they were seen as pre-

its saltiness. It can, however, become contaminated or dirty. In the time of Jesus, salt that was contaminated and could no longer be used for eating had lost its saltiness and was likely scattered on roads and paths to keep the dust down. The bottom line: when salt is no longer salty, nothing can fix it — or replace it. When we consume salt, three things happen: the flavor of the food is enhanced, we get thirsty, and we crave something sweet. In August and September, my favorite

— and it was certainly different than what they had known before. And then He said this, “You are the salt of the earth, But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Matthew 5:13. Jesus is making a very specific point: Salt is the only thing that tastes salty. If salt loses its saltiness, there isn’t anything else that can be salty. Sodium Chloride, NaCl, the stuff we put in saltshakers, is a very stable compound that cannot lose its flavor,

lunch is fresh tomato sandwiches. I confess I’ve tried them without salt. Meh. But oh my, a little salt and — bam! Those tomatoes are delicious! My favorite snack has always been potato chips and soda. I’ve had potato chips without salt. Meh. Salt makes them delicious! A crunch of salty, then a swallow of sweet, followed by another crunch of salty and a swallow of sweet — and on and on it goes. The salty-sweet cycle is why restaurants give away salty snacks

while you wait for your meal. They do it to sell more drinks. Why do they put so much salt in their food? To make it taste better and to make you crave something sweet at the end — an expensive dessert! It could be called manipulation, but we love that saltysweet combination so much that we are more-than-willing participants. And this is why Jesus needs us to be salty. Christ then crave the sweet, Living Water. The key question is this: are we salty? Do we have enough mercy and grace stored up within us to consistently and genuinely live out the counterintuitive values of the New Covenant? Are you strong enough to love your enemies and those who hate you and mistreat you? Are you deep enough to rejoice in suffering and loss and grief? Are you content enough to be perpetually thankful and sacrificially generous? Are you secure enough to die with pride of self? Are you solid enough

to keep your thoughts pure? Are you disciplined enough to keep your tongue under control? How salty are you? Is your reservoir running low? Yeah, mine is too. It’s been a long six months of pandemic. Remember, Jesus went forty days in isolation without food and water to make sure His reservoir was full to overflowing. What are we doing to fill our reservoirs? Are we taking the time to immerse ourselves in the Word and prayer? Are we fully and consistently surrendering our lives to the infilling presence of the Holy

Spirit? Are we taking time and making space for the Body of Christ in our busy schedules? Are we seeking to use our gifts and abilities to advance the mission of God? If not, then it is very likely that our reservoirs of mercy and grace are running low, and our salt is losing its saltiness. Friends, there is no one else on planet earth that can fulfill the mission of God. There is no one else who can be salty. We are God’s plan A — and there is no plan B. It’s time to fill the reservoirs of mercy and grace. Remember, you can’t give away what you don’t have. Be salty.

Covenant, we become the “salty” that causes people to thirst for the Living Water. The woman at the well was thirsty, and Jesus gave her the sweet Living Water to drink. See John 4. Jesus refers to the Living Water again in John 7:37-38, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” When we live counterintuitively, just like Jesus presented in the Sermon, we become salty. The people who experience the salty followers of Jesus

ou don’t want to talk about it. Sensitive topic, that’s it. Brings up memories you don’t care to examine, things you aren’t willing to confront in your mind. No, what’s done is done, there’s no going back, and you don’t want to talk about it. At least not until, as in the new book “White Hot Light” by Frank Huyler, you do... After more than two decades working in emergency medicine, you might think a doctor has seen it all. Done it all, maybe, but Frank Huyler still seems to be surprised at what the human body can endure or accommodate, and still support life. He sometimes seems surprised at himself. After that long in the ER, a doctor is seasoned. He makes fewer youngdoctor mistakes, but the curiosity he

once had still exists. He knows that the new crop of residents and interns are too young to have seen diseases that devastated populations a couple generations ago. He has confidence in his own reflexive actions when the job demands it, but even in the comfortable center of his career, he’ll never stop second-guessing or what-iffing. Could he have saved the beautiful boy with skin marred by a small blue hole on the right side of his belly? The boy’s tender age reminded Huyler of his own son, bringing back memories of the night his boy was born. Or what about the son who’d been injured in war, and the father whose name Huyler never learned? Was there any way to help the immigrant woman who couldn’t keep appointments, or the one who came in with cancer so advanced that he could see her bones? Or the thousand people brought back from overdoses — could they be saved? Or the suicidal, or those whose stories are learned from police or EMTs — or those whose stories he’d never learn? There were so many heart attacks he’s seen, so many last breaths, so many survivors left to mourn, which

What is the Multiple Listing Service? Commonly referred to as the MLS, the Multiple Listing Service is one of the most effective and quickest ways to get the most exposure to your property.

Do I need the MLS to sell my home? You do not need the MLS to sell your home, but it is definitely recommended. Don’t you want as many people as possible seeing the details and photos of your home?

Q: A:

As a seller, why does it benefit me to list my property for sale in the MLS?

Q: A:

Will listing my home in the MLS net me more money from the sale?

Q: A:

As a seller, you will benefit greatly from listing your property in the MLS. Realtors are constantly checking the MLS for listings that may fit the criteria of their buyer clients. In addition, listings, price changes, etc. can be sent immediately to buyers if their Realtor has added their clients’ wants and needs to an automatic search.

By having your home in the MLS, you will have more potential buyers which will potentially lead to netting more money from the sale. Typically, higher demand leads to a higher sale price. The average list-to-sell ratio in Lycoming County for the past 6 months is .97, which indicates that properties are selling very close to list price.

What kind of exposure will my home receive through the MLS?

PREMIER

In addition to exposing your property to the 300+ Realtors in our local marketing area, many REAL websites such as Realtor.com ESTATE AGENCY and Real Estate Brokerages pull information from the MLS to display on their sites. Your Premier Real Estate Agents

and death. Huyler also extends deep appreciation for colleagues here, and that’s tinged with frequent awe. He’s well-traveled and grew up overseas, so we peek through a window at places and practices we’ll likely never know. We see frailty that’s strangely comforting. Indeed, this is a hard read, but you’ll be spellbound — especially if you’ve ever consulted an MD, or think you might some day. For you, doctors, nurses, or medical support staff, “White Hot Light” is a must-read you’ll want to talk about.

is where his experience steps in. Experience puts a callus on a doctor’s pain. But it should never numb his reverence for life. “White Hot Light” is not a pretty read. Not at all, but it’s a beautiful one. If that sounds like a bit of a riddle to you, here: the stories that author Frank Huyler tells are gnashingly ragged, but the language he uses to tell them is breathtaking, in a soft-grass-androlling-hills sort of way. Devastating anecdotes, gorgeous prose. Don’t let that scare you off, though, because this isn’t just a book on illness

There’s Way More Good Than Bad By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz

W

hen did it become acceptable, almost fashionable, to bash police officers? Not just verbally, in some instances, physically. From violent protesters to elected officials to news anchors, newspapers, and megacorporations, brutally criticizing and denouncing the police is the hot new trend. Especially for folks that like to comment on issues they know nothing about or have tunnel vision. This attitude came to the forefront on Memorial Day when four Minneapolis police officers aggressively arrested George Floyd, an unarmed black man suspected of passing counterfeit money. The aggressive actions included an officer placing his knee on Floyd’s neck in a seldom-used police procedure to detain someone. Not long after, George Floyd died at the young age of 46. No matter if the arresting officers were overly cautious, too defensive, or simply had a knee jerk reaction, they acted incorrectly and need to be held responsible for those actions. Unfortunately, in some individuals’ opinion, the instant Floyd was killed, all police officers across the country became a target for rage and hate. Suddenly all police were perceived as racists, renegades, and above the law regarding police brutality.

As a result, the police became criminals and deserved little or no respect. To make matters worse, “defund the police” has become the battle cry for a small group of resentful people wanting to punish every police officer for the mistakes of a few. Defunding the police means taking money from a police department’s budget and using it elsewhere. Instead of using the funds for more police officers on the street and patrolling neighborhoods, instead of giving the cops better protective gear or training, money taken from a police departments’ budget could go towards additional low-income housing, community programs, and social services. Unless you’ve worked as a police officer, you could never fully understand what these men and women experience during their careers, from dealing with horrific and bloody auto accidents, responding to armed robberies, and violent domestic disturbances. The police enforce the law and work to keep drunk drivers off the streets. The police deal with highly emotional and difficult situations, such as detailing and reporting rape, elder abuse, suicide, and child abuse. Recently and locally, the police dealt with the ongoing war on drugs by arresting drug dealers and slowing the pipeline of drugs from Philadelphia. Last year local police were involved in a deadly 12-hour standoff

community safe. Since May 25, cities across the nation have been home to many peaceful protests; however, some protests have turned into riots with looting, burning buildings, crowded streets, gunshots, and death. And the police are there too, trying to keep the city safe. The irony with all this police bashing? If the people that degrade the police and call for police defunding, if their lives were in danger and they needed help immediately, what would they do? They would seek help from the police they want to punish. And the police officers would show up, possibly risking their own lives to save someone else.

with an armed and wanted man barricaded inside a home in Lock Haven. Months later, the police dealt with a convenience store robbery in Newberry, where a customer was shot dead at close range. Every day when a police officer reports to work, they realize there’s a chance they could get shot, stabbed, or killed while trying to keep the community safe. Yes, over the years, there have been cops who acted recklessly and were never disciplined for their mistakes — instances like these need to be dealt with and prevented. But that number is a small percentage of the country’s police force. Their actions do not reflect the majority of police officers that are heroes for keeping the entire

The Roving Sportsman… The Amazing Monarch By Jon Pries

O

ver the past several years on a nearby property, I have been observing an increasing spread of milkweeds and goldenrods in fields that have been placed in the CREP Program. Some songbirds nest in these fields, deer will occasionally feed through them in search of certain plants that they like and rodents, such as mice and moles, frequent these plots that provide them unlimited food and shelter. Along with these creatures, these abandoned fields are increasingly frequented by monarch butterflies. In recent weeks, the adult monarchs, (Danaus plexippus), have been flying about and feeding on the nectar of the goldenrod flowers, while the caterpillars, or larva, have been slowly munching away on the leaves of the milkweeds and the chrysalis form, or pupa stage, of the butterfly can be observed hanging

on the underside of leaves and branches and attached to structures nearby. Interestingly, there seems to be a much greater number of all these forms of the monarchs in fields in our area this year. The monarch butterfly is easily recognizable, with a wingspan of about 4 inches and its basic coloration of orange wings, marked with black veins and a black border with two rows of white spots. While there are several subspecies of monarchs, the ones we see throughout Pennsylvania can also be found across the entire United States and occasionally on islands in the Caribbean. While they can be seen all across our state, they are currently most often spotted feeding on the nectar of goldenrod plants as they gather their strength for what is truly one of the Wonders of the World of Nature. In autumn, as the temperatures begin to drop, they will gather for their migration southward. The

those that migrate south and winter over in Mexico, which live seven to nine months. Therefore, about 4 generations of monarchs occur each year. As I am writing this article, I glance out my window to see a monarch butterfly winging its way from one goldenrod plant to another. No doubt, it will not be one that migrates to Mexico, but the eggs that it lays will transition through the life cycle that will provide one of the many millions of ones that do. Thinking about the amazing migration that will occur, the stay over the winter in Mexico, with a return in the spring gives a renewed appreciation for the Wonders of Nature. There exists today an organization, The Monarch Joint Venture, a nonprofit made up of federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses and academic program partners working together to conserve the monarch butterfly migration for future generations. most amazing aspect of this flight is that it will take them about 1,800 miles! As a retired former airline pilot, and having flown large jet aircraft across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, I understand navigation and have a real appreciation for today’s sophisticated navigational equipment. So how, for Heaven’s sake, does all of this modern technology fit inside this small insect?!?! Well, obviously, it doesn’t, but somehow, through the magic of nature, they will fly from the fields of Pennsylvania this fall, and winter in the mountains of Mexico, then return to our state in the spring, where the cycle begins all over again! Eggs will be laid on milkweed plants, and a new generation hatches, matures and the life cycle continues. As these eggs hatch, and after several molts, the black, white and yellow-green stripped caterpillar reaches almost 2 inches. It then leaves its milkweed plant to pupate elsewhere as a pale green, golden-dotted chrysalis. Adults live only a few weeks, except for

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Accessing Rivers During Low Water Periods

I

t’s no secret that at least this part of the state is suffering from some of the lowest water levels in rivers and streams in a long time. Fishing medium and small streams is difficult, and fishing for trout during this hot, dry period is not recommended due to the harm it would do even if fish were to be released. While some of us diehards have

been hitting local lakes instead of moving water, even lakes and ponds have been affected by little rain and high temperatures resulting in heavy weed growth and less active fish. If you are fortunate enough to own some kind of “bass boat,” you may still have difficulty fishing even large rivers like our own Susquehanna River. I recently checked a couple of

MURRAY

local Fish and Boat Commission accesses, and the water was so low you could not even launch a jet boat without dragging in the few inches of water and exposed rocks. There are some launches Ken where access is still Hunter available, but running up and down the Susquehanna right now in a gas-powered prop boat could easily lead to some damaged props.

While even our jet and gas-powered boats are somewhat limited, that does not mean, however, that fishing our larger streams and the Susquehanna is out of the question — enter canoes and kayaks. I owned a canoe long before I owned a gas-powered fishing boat, and that canoe has been on a lot of rivers, lakes, and streams even all the way to the St. Lawrence River in Canada. I personally prefer a canoe over a kayak since I have more space to work with, and I am sitting higher, making fishing and casting a bit easier. Many people avoided canoes because

or plastic boat, and that can easily happen in a canoe or kayak. Another big advantage is that canoes and kayaks can easily move over weeds and very shallow water, allowing you to reach places that you may otherwise have not been able to fish. What I especially like about a canoe is that you can easily get in and out, and when drifting the river, there are times when I want to get out and fish the upper reaches of a pool while wading. If you don’t have access to a canoe or kayak, you are still not out of the picture; how about a belly-boat — that’s the inner-tube with a seat and an extra air-filled compartment that serves as a backrest and additional floatation. A pair of flippers propel the device. Don’t laugh; I’ve floated sections of the river and several lakes and ponds with excellent success. By the way, if all else fails, you can still access the river and larger streams the good old-fashioned way — wade out and start casting. A couple of weeks ago, I did that, and in a couple of hours, I landed three smallmouths and lost two more — a good way to cool off on a hot afternoon.

they could tip easily, but with a little practice, that is mostly avoidable. Make no mistake about it though, today the kayak has taken the top spot when it comes to non-powered boats. From what I’ve been hearing, the demand for kayaks is so high that some businesses are having a difficult time keeping them in stock. It’s also pretty apparent from what I’ve seen when I’m on a lake or river trying to fish. I see good numbers of kayaks these days, especially with all this COVID-19 stuff causing people to want to “social distance” by hitting a nearby lake or stream. Many kayaks are just for paddling around, but today manufacturers are building kayaks just for fishing with storage compartments, rod holders, and other fishing related features. Actually, fishing from a canoe or kayak on lakes and rivers offers some advantages over powerboats, especially in low water situations and on weedy lakes. First off, canoes and kayaks can be much quieter than powerboats, and that includes even electric motors. I say “can be” because it’s important not to be banging or dragging things around in a metal

games close up. Fewer minor league teams will also result in thousands of people losing their jobs and a source of income, significant negative economic impact on the communities losing teams, in addition to more than 1,000 young athletes losing their dream as professional baseball players. The proposed plan would reduce the number of MiLB teams from 160 to 120. It’s time for a math lesson. With 30 MLB teams, that equals each team having four minor league affiliates. The Philadelphia Phillies minor league affiliates include: Lehigh Valley (AAA), Reading (AA), and Class A Clearwater (Florida State League) and Lakewood (South Atlantic League). Yep, that’s Williamsport standing alone with no chair to jump into. Should the plan go through, each MLB team would have four full-season affiliates plus a Rookie-level team located at spring training complexes. This comes at a time when MLB made the move for 2020 to cut the annual player draft from 40 rounds to 5. (The draft will increase to 20-30 rounds next season). That writing on the wall seems pretty indelible. When playing musical chairs, those who stand around and wait, lose. But that is the only option the Crosscutters and other minor league teams seem to have at the moment. There has been some speculation that Williamsport will have some type of baseball MAV3-20 at Bowman Field next season. Still, even if they do, there is no identified definition as to what baseball in Williamsport might look like in 2021. Regardless of the plan’s final outcome, the landscape of MiLB across the country will definitely be changing.

new scoreboard for the facility. Williamsport began its professional baseball existence in 1926 and, with very few exceptions, has fielded a team every year since. The NY-Penn League is a “bus league,” and while many late-night trips are made community to community, only the jaunt to the Vermont Lake Monsters in Burlington can be deemed excessive. Yep, minor league players, except those signed as high draft choices, don’t make much; about $1,200 a month at the shortseason Class A level, during the playing season. But, whose fault is that? With the money MLB shells out to its players, they could make that pay more equitable — if they chose to. Yes, most minor league players will never “make it to the show,” but their existence provides fans with the “baseball experience” and keeps them interested in the game. If Manfred’s plan is adopted, 22 states will lose minor league teams. With access to professional baseball reduced dramatically, it is estimated 14 million people will be at least 50 miles away from a MiLB team. This comes at a time when many families see MiLB as an affordable alternative to MLB games, giving their kids a chance to enjoy baseball and experience the game at an affordable cost. The existence of the locally popular MLB/ Little League born from the SALESClassic EVENTwas Commissioner’s desire to grow the game and connect with a younger audience. The recent announcement of the game’s extension in conjunction with Little League’s new eightyear contract with ESPN underlines that desire. Sporting Matters With Spence…

Back to School and Sports

J

ensen is back from a lengthy break. He is only going to school two days a week as WASD is using a hybrid. My eleven-year-old son is doing the best he can. He is wearing his mask. My sixth grader was asked to do a short writing assignment the very first day. I don’t want to get in trouble for paraphrasing so here it is word for word. “My first day of school was kinda

awkward. It was good to see my teachers, but we didn’t leave the classroom. We even had to eat lunch here too. No recesses. That made me mad because I wanted to hang out with my friends. Everyone has to stay six feet apart and wear our masks. I have a great teacher and I am hoping for a better year. But this is why my first day was awkward.” Again. I would like to echo that I have nothing but love for our local school

districts. These are unprecedented times, and they are forced to make many tough decisions. I continue to pray for the administrations and boards. There Jamie are surely no right or Spencer wrong answers, and I feel terrible for these

kids. Personally, I have been going back and forth on several fronts. I

always look at both sides, but mainly focus on the big picture. Sports are a huge and important part of my life, and I continue to struggle with this issue. We have all had to make many sacrifices during this pandemic. There has been much debate and conversation in the past few weeks. Officials have focused a great deal of time on safely returning to our sporting fields. Allowing spectators and fans has now joined the conversation. The plot thickens. More politics.
