Boaters, Bikers, Bands, and Bombs Bursting in Air By Jim Webb Jr.

T

here has been more talk about the Constitution of the United States of America in recent months than in decades. The most discussed and debated Amendments of our Bill of Rights, as always, has been the 1st Amendment, which provides the freedom of speech, press, the right to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievance. And of course, the 2nd Amendment, which is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. To me, the Constitution is the living, breathing, lifeblood of liberty for the American people. It has angered me beyond belief to see the Constitution twisted and perverted to try to justify criminal activity. Our Bill of Rights is a very simple read. A good rule of thumb is your freedom ends when you infringe upon another individual’s rights. For example, the right to assemble and or protest does not cover assault, looting, robbery, arson, and so on. But that’s not what this column is about. A tip of my Webb Weekly cap to all that attended and participated in the President

2020 Kickoff

Trump Regatta and Patriotic Rally. It was a grand slam event centered around a boat regatta, motorcycle ride, live music, and ending the event, a fireworks display. The Lycoming County Patriotic Rally, as it was officially titled, was an amazing example of the 1st Amendment being celebrated properly by Americans from all walks of life. This was only enhanced by the Norman Rockwell setting of where the event was held. A special thank you to the Steppe family for allowing the use of their farm. Now before I go any further, I would be writing these same words of praise if this type of event was held for presidential candidate Joe Biden. With all that has gone on in past months, this patriotic extravaganza was a great way for folks to get out and enjoy a day of selfexpression of freedom and celebration. I could hear the roar of the motorcycles as I was working at my son’s house as they traveled through South Side. It’s my understanding that over 700 bikers took the patriotic ride that day. I turned on the radio in my truck, and there was my friend Gary Chrisman live from the Hiawatha describing the going ons from boat side.

A shout out to Captain Mike Strunk for his navigational skills and missing the nearly 200 boats estimated on the water. Although a little bump and Gary going overboard would have provided a great story and plenty of laughs. Just kidding. When I took a ride with my four-legged son, Finn, to see what all was going on, I could hear the music, smell the food trucks — as could my sidekick — and view the Red, White and Blue farm party. And no, we didn’t stop. I did treat Finn to a burger off the grill later, though. The patriotic band festival featured six acts provided by local talent; it was estimated that nearly 5,000 folks attended the events on the main concourse. All totaled, it was estimated nearly 15,000 folks participated in the day in some way. The all-American 4th of July type celebration was closed out with fireworks, which I have been told by many were unbelievable. I could hear them from my living room. And guessing from the way Finn responded, they must

have been great. It was great just to hear the return of fireworks exploding in the night air above the Susquehanna River. A few closing notes on the Trump River Boat Regatta and Patriotic Rally; there are events like this being held all over our Nation. This, however, is the only one of its kind combining everything mentioned. Although it did not get the local TV or media coverage it deserved, a Fox News post of the event, at last count, had received over 268,000 likes and had been viewed over 400,000 times. The Woodward Township Fire Department provided emergency service assistance if needed for the event. There were no reports of injuries or any mishaps. The Pennsylvania State Police also had a presence to make sure law and order were kept. There were zero reports of any lawlessness. The Williamsport Bureau of Fire covered the river end of the celebration providing two water rescue boats. They had a great time and reported no incidents. A heartfelt thank you to all these good folks and the job they do each and every day. The Steppe family reported there wasn’t a piece of trash to be found. That everyone did a great job in support of the host family and respecting their property. It sounds like the All-American Day could not have gone better. God Bless America.

Hunger Action Month

S

eptember is Hunger Action Month. It was established by Feeding America in 2008 when they decided it was time for a nationwide push to get involved with the hunger crisis across the country. During September, people everywhere help to feed the needy in their neighborhoods and country, working to ensure that the 48 million people who live with hunger every day can get some relief. Going hungry is a problem for more than just adults. Children all over the country go to school without a proper breakfast, leading to difficulty focusing on their education, alertness, and generally performing well. Hunger affects all sorts of people. Many people across the country are just one job loss or medical emergency short of not being able to put food on the table. In Pennsylvania, one in eight adults, and one in six children struggle with hunger. That’s almost 1.7 million people, almost 500,000 of which, are kids. Kids who go hungry are at more risk of repeating grades in school, experiencing developmental impairments in areas like language and motor skills and more likely to have behavioral and social problems. Children struggling with hunger come from families who are struggling, too. Children facing hunger often grow up in a family where a parent or parents also face hunger. A family of four facing hunger may be in need of 34 additional meals a month simply because they don’t have money to buy enough food. Luckily, several local school districts have recently received grants that are allowing

them to offer free breakfast and lunch for every student. This includes being able to take home food for the days they aren’t in school if they are hybrid students. Steph Children and adults Nordstrom aren’t alone in the hunger struggle. Our senior citizens are also working to balance bills and medical care with food. According to Feeding America, 64 percent of seniors they serve are choosing between food and medical care. Feeding America also notes that “The rate of hunger among seniors aged 60 and older has increased by 68% since 2001, a lingering effect of the 2008-09 recession. In fact, the number of seniors struggling with hunger is projected to increase by another 50% when the youngest of the baby-boom generation reaches 60 in 2025. And hunger pains can be increasingly painful as we age.” Feeding America says, each year, millions of people in America face hunger. The coronavirus pandemic has caused even more families to struggle. They estimate that 54 million people may be food insecure in 2020, including 18 million children. The pandemic has caused more families to seek help from food banks in the Feeding America network. Food banks estimate that 4 in 10 people visiting a food bank now need assistance as a result of COVID-19. Experiencing hunger during childhood can

have a life-long impact on your mental and physical health and educational achievement. Many of the families that Feeding America food banks serve work part-time or full-time jobs. However, low wages, underemployment, and necessary expenses like rent prevent families from meeting their basic needs. Federal nutrition programs, like SNAP and WIC, feed millions every year. Yet, many who struggle with hunger are unlikely to qualify for these programs because they are employed or have incomes slightly above the poverty-line. So, what can we do to help? The first answer is the most obvious. Donate. Be it to an organization like Feeding America or staying local by donating to the Central PA Food Bank, or the Salvation Army’s Food Pantry. The Williamsport Area School District has also taken steps in the fight against childhood hunger with their Backpack Program. Funded by the Williamsport Education Foundation, and in conjunction with the Central PA Food Bank, this program allows kids to take home backpacks with food for weekends and holidays. All of these organizations are working in the fight against hunger locally and can always use both food and financial donations. If you can’t donate that way, consider donating your time. Fifty-one percent of food programs rely on volunteers. You can contact the Central PA Food Bank at www.centralpafoodbank.org or by calling (570) 321-8023, and you can reach the Salvation Army at 570-326-9187. We live in the highest food producing country in the world. No one should be going hungry, so let’s all do what we can to help.

or the third time, more than 80 brave individuals will be rappelling down the side of one of Williamsport’s tallest building — in this case the Genetti Hotel — to help raise funds for three worthy non-profit groups, the River Valley Regional YMCA, the YWCA of Northcentral Pennsylvania and the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation. This will take place beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. this Saturday, September 19. This daring urban adventure allows volunteers who raise $1,000 or more for either the RVR YMCA, the YWCA, the WASDEF or all three, to experience our city’s longest rappel — 150 feet from the top of the Genetti Hotel. The three non-profits came together in 2017 to bring Over the Edge Williamsport to our community for the first time in the

fall of 2018. Currently, 80 rappelers are registered for the event with room for a total of 92. To have the privilege of rappelling, each participant must raise $1,000 to be used for the charities. “With this being our third year of Over the Edge Williamsport, we wanted to create some new excitement around the event. We are thrilled to provide our adventurous supporters with the opportunity to rappel the 150 feet from the Historic Genetti Hotel. “With that, we have seen a tremendous response from our community in terms of support and participation. Of our 80 rappelers who are registered, approximately 75 percent are first time participants in Over the Edge Williamsport. In addition, we are grateful for the businesses in our community who have stepped up to help make this event possible. A special thank you goes out to our Landing Zone

Brittany Fischer, Communications & Development Director at the YWCA Northcentral PA., said, “With this being my first year with the YWCA and helping manage this event, I have quickly come to find the amazing support that the community shows when they see a collaborative fundraiser. Over the Edge doesn’t just engage thrill seekers. It engages community supporters willing to experience a daring adventure because they are passionate for the causes behind the adventure, allowing our agencies to go on making strong impacts on the communities served.” Probst said for rappelers, there is no experience necessary, that’s one reason this event is so great — anyone can participate. The nine-year-old may not like his ears touched, or his tail, or well, hugs in general, but he does love walks, stuffed animals, and as you can see from his photo, doing magic tricks such as balancing bowls on his head. Bring this jolly boy home today!

We just love Isabella’s look in this photo. It is a mix of sheer surprise and humor. And you know what, that describes Isabella pretty well. She would love to make your household laugh and fill up all the corners of your home with her cozy little self. Can you give Isabella the home she longs for?

Williamsport Sun September 14, 1937 Enlarged City Directory has New Features Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

illiamsport’s complete new directory, containing four new features, is off the press this week. It is a volume of 1,072 pages — 162 pages thicker than the 1936 edition — covering Williamsport, South Williamsport, DuBoistown, Montoursville and

the surrounding rural routes and is published by the R.L. Polk Company, as Boyd’s Williamsport City Directory. The publishers have inaugurated three new services in the street section of the new directory. A symbol denotes owner occupied houses, distinguishing them from rental properties. A number after the name of each householder denotes

the total population of the house, including minors, whose individual names are not listed in the directory. Also, after the name of the householder the telephone number is shown, if there is a telephone in the house. These features have been started in answer to the public demand of the times, the publishers said. Also the publishers have included a new department — a section on colored paper listing telephone subscribers in numerical order according to their telephone numbers. An important new service started here recently by the Polk organization is the Directory Library installed a few weeks ago in the offices of the Williamsport

Community Trade Association. This library is a branch of a chain maintained throughout the United States and Canada by the members of the North American Directory Publishers on an exchange basis A number of new editions are on field here for the reference use of the business man and the general public and new editions will arrive as they are published. As usual the latest Williamsport Directory will be distributed to other branches of the Directory Library. Williamsport’s diversity is indicated by 438 different kinds of commercial, industrial and professional enterprises listed in the directory. This represents an addition of 38 groups in the last year.

By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

You really had to use your imagination, but it was a great way to ‘see’ and learn baseball,” Brock said. Brock and his wife are now ordained ministers and have a deep commitment to serving the youth of their area, the metropolitan area of St. Louis. He supports the “Diamonds in the Rough” program, an annual youth baseball essay contest sponsored by the Briggs and Stratton Company. The prize winner receives a free refurbishing of a baseball or softball field and a baseball clinic conducted by Brock and another Hallof-Famer, Carlton Fisk. “I think that Little League’s Urban Initiative is very consistent with the efforts that I have been making,” Brock said. “It is wonderful to see people trying to restore the game in certain areas. It restores its zest. Little League is a good training ground for young people trying to learn the game and to excel in it.” Brock spoke with great fondness for a man he regards as a mentor and helped bring about his career, former legendary Negro League player and manager, John “Buck” O’Neil. O’Neil worked as a scout for the Chicago Cubs when he scouted Brock as a raw, young player at Southern Univer-

aseball recently suffered the loss of two of its brightest stars from the 1960s and 1970s, and another piece of childhood dropped away with the deaths of Tom Seaver and Lou Brock. Both Seaver and Brock visited the Little League World Series. Seaver in 1988 and Brock in 2006. It was during Brock’s appearance in 2006 that I met him. I wrote of my encounter with Brock during that for Webb Weekly. What follows is some of what I wrote. Lou Brock had a Hall of Fame major league career and accomplished much during that career. Still, he would have loved to have had an opportunity to learn baseball through a program such as Little League Baseball, so he told those gathered at a press conference at Howard J. Lamade Stadium on the first day of the 60th annual Little League World Series. His wife, Jacqueline, joined him. “There wasn’t Little League in the area of Louisiana that I grew up in. I ‘saw’ my baseball on the radio by listening to games broadcast by people such as Harry Caray and other great announcers.

sity in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. O’Neil was most impressed by Brock’s speed, a gift that he thought couldn’t be coached. He let the Cubs know about Brock’s potential, but they waited to sign him. They almost lost him to the team that he would gain the most fame with, the St. Louis Cardinals. Brock recounted the story of a tryout that he thought had been arranged for him in Chicago by a Cardinal scout who was supposed to watch him workout. Brock took the bus up from Louisiana and had about $10 in his pocket. It turns out that the scout got his wires crossed with Brock and was out in Oregon, scouting a pitcher named Ray Washburn, who would be one of the Cards’ standout pitchers during the 1960s. Brock ended up staying with a friend for a while and washing floors at a YMCA, awaiting his major league tryout. O’Neill continued to press on behalf of Brock, and finally, the Cubs were impressed enough to sign him, and he ended up playing for the Cubs but became a star when he was traded in June 1964 to the Cardinals for pitcher Ernie Broglio. Most sportswriters regard Brock as the heart and soul of the great Cardinal teams of the mid-1960s. “I owe a lot to Buck. He was like the father I never had,” Brock said. “When

Buck was the first black coach in the majors with the Cubs, I was his roommate. He taught me a great deal about life. I even named one of my sons for him.” He said he has a deep admiration for Curt Flood, who played with him in the Cards’ outfield. “Curt sacrificed his career to fight the system in baseball, the Reserve Clause. All of today’s players should be eternally grateful to him,” Brock said. “He made it possible for them to put their talents into the open market and to receive good compensation for it. He was a real good guy and a great baseball player.” Brock, who threw out the first ball at the first game of the LLWS, said he would not mind coming back to the Series again and perhaps spend a little more time here. He said coming here was a great experience for him. Lou even autographed my copy of David Halberstam’s excellent book, “October 1964,” which detailed the 1964 World Series and the exciting roads that both the Yankees and Cardinals took to reach that Series, won by the Cardinals in a hard-fought seven-game series. Lou Brock was a class act and will be greatly missed. Baseball and sports, in general, could use more people like him.

LIVING WELL require skill. When the work goals are very clear, this style is effective. This would be most useful when dealing with contract work that is very straight forward. It would not be appropriate when working in a team environment. Coaching leadership: A coaching style leader “sells” their vision to their team. They effectively communicate objectives, then motivate their team to devote themselves to a common goal. This style works best when team members have a stake in a project’s outcome and are full-time and/or fully invested in the vision. Supporting leadership: The supporting leadership style is all about collaboration. Supportive leaders encourage the sharing of ideas and welcome suggestions. This style allows team members to feel valued and that they are contributing to the decision making. Supporting leadership is useful when the leader does not need to be constantly involved and is only needed when the final decision is to be made. Delegating leadership: A delegating leadership style works best when working with a seasoned group of

managers or directors. It allows team members the authority to make decisions and act independently. Leaders who use this style fully trust their subordinates to make the right decisions and get the job done. This style does not work well with inexperienced team members unless the project is of a low priority and is low risk. While there are many definitions of leadership styles and opinions on what traits make the best leaders, it is most certainly true that the best leaders subordinate their personal needs to the needs of those they serve. They rise to the occasion and employ whatever style is necessary to lead their team. They are a mix of traits and are able to adapt to changing circumstances. They listen to their followers with an open mind, evaluate the situation, and then make honest decisions based on the group’s good. They do not merely say what we want to hear but will work to make us better. Keep this in mind the next time you see a political ad or watch the news. Think about what type of leader you choose to follow. Like the Bob Dylan song says, everyone has “Gotta Serve Somebody.”

n a sports summer that took so many smiles from the faces of adults and children alike, golf proved a source of outdoor fun and release for many. After a spring stuck inside, families were able to enjoy an afternoon sharing in good shots and bad — but doing it together. It’s that same sense of family that is the foundation of another golfing opportunity for our community. The 2nd Annual Dwell Orphan Care Golf Outing is scheduled for Sunday, September 20 at the White Deer Golf Complex. Dwell Orphan Care exists to support foster and adoptive families in Lycoming County and beyond, so that children have a safe, loving, and forever home to call their own. The commitment made by an adoptive family to give a child that home is not only extremely

joyful, but also extremely challenging. Like their adopted child, they too need the support and love of many to ensure they can survive through the m any demands that face them. The opportunity to help these families and have a joyful day in doing it is waiting for you to sign up. Four person teams will compete in a scramble format event with individual contests as well. Player registration opens at noon and play begins with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Cost per player is $100. Other sponsorship opportunities are available, and you may register online at www. dwellorphancare.org/2020golfouting or email dwellorphancare@gmail.com. Please help make a difference in changing the trajectories of the lives of these children and their adoptive families.

whipped it up and tried it, I knew right away that I would have to make more. When our group of friends comes over for our famous fun game nights, this will be a hit! We are together practically every weekend, so eight pints is clearly just a start — anything for my besties. From jellies and corn in the freezer to pears, peaches, salsas, and veggies canned, I am about ready for the winter. My momma and I do applesauce and tomato sauce together in September/October; then, my harvest is complete. It’s a sense of feeling accomplished. To walk down in our wine cellar and see all the work over months of canning is pretty awesome. I am telling you; one time of canning and you will want to can everything under the sun. Start with this simple corn salsa. I promise it will be a hit when you need something quick to snacky-snack on and even makes cute little gifts. Come on; you got this. Corn Salsa Ingredients: • 5 cups of fresh corn off the cob- JUICE & ALL (or canned if you don’t have fresh) • 5 cups chopped tomato • 4 peppers (I used one orange, red, yellow and green) • 1/4 cup lime juice • 1 cup onion, chopped • 2 tsp coriander seeds • 1 – 1/2 tsp cummin seeds • 1 tsp salt

This Week’s LION: Superhero CASA Volunteers By Larry Stout

E

very child needs a hero. An abused, neglected, or abandoned child that ends up in the court system needs a superhero. They need a dedicated and passionate member of the community who could advocate for them. They need someone who is be committed to ensuring that they would be able to thrive in a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. They need a CASA volunteer. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a national association in the United States that supports and promotes court-appointed advocates for abused or neglected children. The CASA volunteer serves as the independent, extra set of ‘eyes and ears’ of the court, gathering information from the child, his/her biological parents, foster parents, teachers, counselors, and others. The CASA volunteer then makes recommendations to the judge as to what services or actions are in the child’s best interest. CASA fills a unique role. Children

whose caregivers have failed them, fall into dependency courts through foster care, kinship care, or group homes, which are then served by CASA volunteer advocates. A judge appoints them, and their role is to gather information and make recommendations in the child’s best interest, keeping the child’s personal wishes in mind. In our area, it is Susquehanna Valley CASA headquartered in Sunbury. The executive director is Tammy Sempko. Tammy is a woman hard-wired to help abused and neglected children. Beginning her career in Children and Youth Services, she then went to organizations helping challenged children and single moms. When the CASA board was looking for an executive director, Tammy was the perfect fit. I wanted to meet Tammy Sempko to learn more about CASA in our area, and she invited her ‘working board’ to a working lunch with me. There was Sandy Spencer, Marketing/Development Chairman; Pam Mowrey, Fundraising

Chairman; Erin Kearney, Program Director; and Dixie Haldeman, Case Manager. I was so impressed with their passion and dedication; I wondered if I was looking at the cast for the next Avengers movie. They really are superheroes, taking on a super task. Judge Dudley Anderson was the first judge in Lycoming County to request CASA assistance. Since that time, the county judges have recognized their value and requests CASA volunteers for all dependent children that come before them. Unfortunately, there is more need than those stepping up to meet the need. There are currently 34 children who are on the waiting list for a CASA volunteer. For those who want to get in the game and make a difference in a child’s life, the best place to start is going to the website: susquehannavalleycasa.com. You must be 21 or over and willing to commit to a 30-hour training program, and then be willing to commit 10-12 hours a month to serve as a volunteer under a local CASA volunteer coordinator’s supervision. There is an online application to get started, resulting in a telephone conversation to answer any questions and clarify

any information from the application. If all parties agree, the next step would be a meeting (in person or Zoom), and if that goes well — a new superhero is ready to get started. The great thing is that these can be male or female, young and not so young. Dixie Haldeman retired from Children and Youth Services and became a CASA case manager. She stated this is the most rewarding volunteer work she has ever done for the past seventeen years. Similar responses came from Erin, Sandy, and Pam. Their faces light up like electricity describing the difference their work has done in the children’s lives that cross their path. I had the good fortune to see this from the opposite spectrum as a foster parent. Our foster teens were always excited when their CASA volunteers came to visit. Superheroes are not born. They are made. It begins with the willingness to make a difference, and then move in a direction to begin to make it happen. Anyone can make a difference. As Margaret Mead once stated, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

PREPARINg YOUR hOME FOR LISTINg with Tracy Knoebel, Realtor

Mobile: 570-220-3214 tknoebel@wheresthathome.com

Q: A:

How should I prepare my home for photos and showings? When you list your home, if you want premium price, it needs to be in premium condition! It’s very important that buyers see your home in its best light so that they can picture themselves living there. Even though they are looking at how many bedrooms and bathrooms you have, their ability to imagine living there day to day is ultimately what causes them to make an offer. So, to get your home looking “HGTV ready,” here are the top 10 things to do: 1. Put toilet seats down! 2. Remove the kitties and doggies for pictures (or at least make sure they aren’t in any pictures.) 3. Turn off the TV. 4. Take all the magnets and pictures off the fridge. 5. Remove valuables, like guns, for privacy. 6. Clear all the clutter from bathrooms, the kitchen, and tops of dressers/desks. 7. Touch up trim paint and wall paint. 8. Consider neutralizing crazy wall paint colors. 9. Deep clean as if a Hollywood star is coming to visit. 10. Spruce up the front by removing weeds and REAL ESTATE AGENCY putting out fresh mulch/flowers. Your Premier Real Estate Agents

hanks to earlier detection, more Americans are surviving cancer. That’s why you shouldn’t put off having the screening tests you need. While scheduling a mammogram or colonoscopy may not be top of mind for you right now, screening tests like these can spot cancer before it causes any symptoms. Usually, the sooner cancer is found, the better the chance it can be treated before it has spread. This often means that treatment will be more successful. Cancer screening may include a physical examination by a health care provider, an X-ray, or a laboratory test. In many cases, a mix of methods — such as clinical breast exam and mammography — is recommended. Common Cancer Screenings Proactive screening increases the chances of finding certain cancers early, when they are most likely to be curable. Below are a list of common cancer screenings and recommendations, however, each person should speak with their provider about their

individual risks and which screening is appropriate: Breast Cancer Screening – An initial baseline mammogram is recommended at age 40. Shared decision making based on individual risk evaluation should direct further screening scheduling and should be based off a conversation with your primary care physician. Cervical Cancer Screening – Pap tests are recommended every three years beginning at age 21 until age 29. Beginning at age 30, a pap test with HPV test is recommended every five years until age 65. It is recommended against screening for cervical cancer in women who have had a hysterectomy with removal of the cervix and do not have a history of a high-grade precancerous lesion or cervical cancer. Screening is also not recommended in women 21 years or younger as well as 65 and older, unless otherwise at significant risk. Colorectal Cancer Screening – Colonoscopy is the golden standard of colorectal cancer screenings. For normal risk individuals, the American College of Gastroenterology recommends a colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50, and age 45 for African Americans. A man is considered a higher risk for prostate cancer if you are black, have family members who were diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 55, or are known to have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 DNA strand in your family. With these heightened risks, you should talk to your doctor about prostate cancer screening options by the age of 45. t is somewhat ironic that almost all national media sources are singularly focused on the presidential election to be held on November 4th, highlighting that it will have ramifications far into the next decade, yet hardly mentioning something that in many ways could have even an even bigger impact — the 2020 census. This decadal event will have a tremendous significance on the country — as well as here in Lycoming County. In federal assistance alone, 130 programs are distributed based on population. These include the National School Lunch Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Head Start, Medical Assistance Program, and programs related to adoption assistance, public housing funds, highway planning, and construction, water and sewage disposal systems for rural communities, rural business enterprise grants, assistance to firefighters, rural housing preservation grants, state wildlife grants, wildlife restoration, crime victim assistance, voting access for individuals with disabilities grants, and the list goes

on and on. And this is just the federal funds; it applies to state allocations as well. It has been estimated that the county loses approximately $2,000 in state and federal funding annually for EACH PERSON, who is not counted in the census. Think of that. Imagine a family of five who just decided they wanted to hide out and skip the census. That amounts to $10,000 that the county would not receive that they would otherwise be entitled to in government funding. Over the ten-year time until the next census, this would result in a loss of $100,000 of lost funding. All because the head of the home could not be bothered for ten minutes to fill out a simple form. And this same family would probably be the

because the population in this area had gone down. It now includes not just Lycoming County but also portions of Bradford, Centre, Clinton, Juniata, Mifflin, Northumberland, Perry, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, and Wyoming counties. Fred Keller is a wonderful U.S. Congressman and represents us well as did Tom Marino before him, but we share Congressman Keller with fourteen other counties! If there is an undercount in the census, especially if there has not been a gain in the overall population, we may be sharing not just our federal congressman but also our state representatives over a

much wider area. This would mean our representation is more spread out, and our local needs are competing over a much broader scope. Yes, COVID has definitely been to blame for many of the census problems, but the deadline has been stretched to October 1st, and it now time to do your duty. Currently, Pennsylvania itself is just at 90 percent compliance. If Lycoming County is typical, this would mean that there are still at least hundreds if not thousands who have not responded to the census. There are no good reasons for not participating in the census, but two thousand reasons for doing so.

If you have NOT completed the census, stop reading, get on a computer and go to 2020census.gov and click on the “How to Respond” button. The site is very user-friendly. It will only take a couple of minutes to answer the dozen or so questions. If you have completed the census, ask friends or relatives if they have done so. If they admit they have not participated in the census, be good citizens, and implore them to do their civic duty. So much depends on it. Even one undercount in Lycoming County would have a ten-year impact to our area. Now is the time — log on and be counted!

first to complain about increases in taxes and wondering why the government is not helping them more! The census also impacts our representation in government. By law, there are 435 members of the House of Representatives in the U.S. Congress. The total population, whatever it will be, will be divided by 435, and districts will be redesigned nationwide to comply with those population density parameters. In 2000, each federal congressional district had 646,952 residents. In 2010 it was 710,767. Because of the increase, the new 12th Congressional District in Pennsylvania had to expand in area

Style File: Boho

B

oho, short for bohemian, in its most recent mode, is a style that typifies a way of dressing inspired by the lifestyle of free spirits and hippies of the 1960s and 1970s. However, the true origins of the boho style and culture are widely debated. Many believe that it was established as a counterculture by artists in 19th century France after the French revolution. Some argue that the

original bohemians were wandering ‘Gypsies’ or Romani people that lived outside the mainstream and were often social outcasts. Boho style is also associated with pre-Raphaelite women of the 19th century, who were radical thinkers and artists of the counterculture. Over the centuries, the bohemian style has been associated with nomadic tribes, gypsies, artistic movements, and music festivals.

Modern boho draws from a variety of inspirations: From the aforementioned hippies to Edwardian style dresses, and encompasses various cuts, silhouettes, patterns, fabrication Bernadette techniques, and types Ulsamer of materials. A lot of brand name bohemian designs also utilize natural and sustainable fabrics and are influenced by touches of traditional ethnic and

folk elements. In the 21st century, boho style has mostly been the realm of younger women, 20-somethings in floral maxi skirts, and suede high-heeled boots with pendant necklaces, fringe vests, and fedora hats. But, at its core, boho is about intrinsic layers, an earthy color palette, and natural fabrics in flowy silhouettes. So, pieces like tunic-style blouses, kaftan dresses, slouchy wool sweaters, and linen drawstring pants all fall under the boho style umbrella. Of course, any woman at any age can

embrace or incorporate a bohemian flair to her day-to-day style. Instead of going head-to-toe boho, just switch out some of your basics with a few bohemian elements. Instead of skinny or straight leg jeans, opt for flared denim. Instead of a button-up shirt, try a peasant style blouse. Add a few turquoise pieces to your jewelry rotation or swap your regular day bag for one with fringe. Bohemian style also extends to hair and beauty. The diehard boho-girl will

most definitely tend to a more natural makeup look and opt for longer braided hair, as opposed to heavy foundation and shorter cuts. But, again, you don’t have to sport dramatic plaits and dewy skin to incorporate boho style in your overall look. Of course, dewy skin is usually not a bad thing. You really don’t need to change anything about how you wear your hair and makeup to embrace bohemian beauty; instead, look at the products you’re using. Are they made with natural ingredients,

And, while boho was originally associated with the counterculture, it has certainly become mainstream, with a variety of brands and retailers catering to the bohemian-loving market. Stores like Free People and Urban Outfitters lean heavily toward boho apparel and accessories. ne step, another, and a hop outward. Somersault once, kick back, arms up, and knife cleanly through the surface of the water like a sword through cake. Clean. Not a drop out of place in that dive, hardly a splash. So why did you do it? Says Bonnie Tsui in “Why We Swim,” there could be many reasons. If there’s one thing you know about summertime, it’s that it can get hot. Like, melt-your-shoes hot, crispygrass hot, sweat-til-you’re-wet hot. And that’s when any size pool of water starts to look mighty tempting. But, says Tsui, “We... are not natural-born swimmers...” Throw us in the water and, without lessons, we flail. Lessons aside, though, cave art discovered in 1933 shows that humans have been swimming for at least 10,000 years and they probably learned how by watching those who figured it out even before them. That likely happened in

the “Green S a h a r a ,” where there were once ve rd ant meadows and cool pools. Bottom line: we are land animals that are attracted to water, and not just to drink. Scientists call us “’secondary’” swimmers although, in some cultures, it seems as though our fellow humans are half-fish. Hailing from Southeast Asia, the Moken people can see underwater in ways that most of us can’t; many Bajau from the same area are born with spleens that allow them to stay underwater for minutes, rather than the pathetic seconds most of us can manage. Japanese ama are able to deep-dive hundreds of times a day. Yes, even some Americans can swim with an endurance that may sound superhuman. But it’s not, not really. For some people, it’s a matter of genetics and having been blessed with a physical quirk that allows impressive feats in the water. For others,

it’s a challenge, a lifesaver, an obsession, a hobby, or pain to overcome. And for some, says Tsui, it’s a matter of ensuring that “we... teach ourselves how to live with water, not how to keep it at bay.” So, you say you’re landlocked. Not much more than a puddle in sight. And that’s okay: instead, dive into “Why We Swim” for some cool refreshment. Indeed, author Bonnie Tsui’s writing brings such strong images to mind — of water, of cold or heat, of the kicks and reaches that swimming requires — that you’ll almost hear the seagulls and you’ll want to reach for a towel. This will remind you of swim meets in high

write today to honor two more fellow basketball players and friends who recently passed away. Dennis “Dutch” Bogaczyk and James “Jimmy” Wilkerson. I had the pleasure of playing with both, for several years, with Ron Travis’s amateur teams — Jon’s Sports and Pennsylvania Athletics. Together with many other excellent players from this area and beyond, we played a 60-game schedule for years. We played high school teams to make them tougher,

Dutch and I grew particularly close as teammates and his passing, after a heroic 18-year battle with leukemia, really hurts. and likened him to Kevin McHale, who Larry Bird fondly nicknamed “the black hole,” as once the ball went to him, you knew where it was going — up! You may as well head to the hoop for a possible rebound. But Dutch seldom missed, so you really, more often than not, just ran back on defense as the ball “tinkled the twine.” Dutch was so much more than a great basketball player. He was a loving husband and father, and friend to so many. Despite fighting this horrible disease, he took the time to reach out to my daughter, when she was going through some rough times, who he got to know when she accompanied us to a

basketball tournament and was our good luck charm! They stayed in touch, and when he passed, she said he was like a second father to her. Dutch, I miss you, my good friend. You were a true warrior. James “Shooting-Jim” Wilkerson was a soft-spoken man and also an important member of the Travis-led teams. He was not really a basketball player — even he would have admitted that — he was a State Champion in track and field, and his athleticism was unquestioned. While not a starter, Jim could ably fill in when needed, and his athleticism often overcame any basketball skills he might be lacking. Ron Travis gave him the moniker

“Shooting Jim” when in one game — although not much of a shooter — he went off for 30 points. He never let us forget that game! Although his playing time was often limited, he never complained. I think he just thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the team and the camaraderie and good-natured ribbing that went along with that. Jim worked in Williamsport for 40some years and was very active in the community with the youth through coaching. He had his finger on the pulse of Billtown, and knew and was like a friend to everyone — he was just that kind of guy. Rest in peace, “Shooting Jim.”

ironic that many years later, after Dutch played at Pitt-Johnstown, that we would end up playing together for so many wonderful years. I’ve always loved the camaraderie that develops while being a part of “the game,” and with Dutch, that was so very special. It seems like only yesterday I was pushing the ball up the court, looking left then right to see my options, and there would be Dutch off to my right, just where I always knew he would be, looking for a kick-out pass, so he could let fly with one of the purest and accurate jumpers I’ve ever seen. We would goodnaturedly kid Dutch in the locker room, “that he never saw a shot he did not like”

The Roving Sportsman… The Ultimate Sacrifice By Jon Pries

I

t happens all of the time in the World of Nature. It happens among birds as well as mammals. It occurs more frequently in the springtime, but can happen any time and especially during the initial months of raising offspring. Through the years, I have witnessed it with a shorebird known as the Killdeer, with wild turkeys, and with ruffed grouse. I recall a long time ago watching the scenario unfold with a mother raccoon and her litter of 4 young kits. Within the last month, it has become clear that the same story has happened within a whitetail deer family. Have you ever been in the fields or in the woods and observed a bird, sometimes a grouse or a hen turkey, appear to be injured, perhaps dragging a wing and seeming to be unable to fly? You watch for a while as she limps along, until you finally become curious and begin to walk closer to her. She lets you get close, then begins hobbling away, but doesn’t go too far. The act continues several times, until; finally she seems to regain her composure and flies away. You are probably happy that she was never really injured and all was right with the world. What you may not have realized is that she had hidden her young chicks and was slowly, but surely, drawing you away from their hiding spot. Once she was sure you could no longer retrace your steps and find them, she flew away and would rejoin her offspring once you left the area. Three weeks ago, I began noticing a pair of fawns traveling together and spotted them

at various times throughout the day. While there were numerous other single fawns in the area, and another pair of twins as well, they were usually accompanied at some point by the doe that brought them into Helping reduce the world. From time pressure on our to time, the fawns would nurse from the whitetail deer and their fawns. mother, getting the nutrition they needed from the milk she provided. But the mother of these two twins seemed to be nowhere around. A week or so after first spotting them, the answer began to become clear. It was mid-afternoon when I first spotted 4 turkey vultures circling overhead and then identified 3 more sitting in trees along the edge of the woods. Upon investigation, I found the carcass of a doe, but the remains were scattered about over a large area. I have seen the remains of a deer killed by a black bear, and this was not the work of a bear. It was, instead, the action of coyotes. Perhaps that is why I had heard them yipping and howling several nights before. In the first few weeks of a fawn’s life, their greatest defense against predators such as bears or coyotes is to curl up and remain motionless as they attempt to hide in grass or a brushy spot. They have no scent at this time, and hiding and remaining perfectly still is their

Shortly after sunrise, I spotted two coyotes, a male and a female, slowly running along the breast of the pond and I quickly slipped into position at the picnic table to await the chance to reduce their number. Ten minutes passed until I spotted the female walking briskly in the freshly cut grass, listening for a mouse or mole. Then, the large male appeared along a field of standing corn as he too slowly hunted for his breakfast. A single shot of the Remington .223 dropped the male in his tracks and sent the female running into the woods at the sound of the shot. Now, when I watch the pair of motherless fawns, I feel a bit relieved that their chances for survival just might have increased with the loss of that big male coyote. Hopefully, their mother’s ultimate sacrifice will not have been in vain.

best chance for survival. Just like with the mother grouse that attempts to draw danger away from her young, it is easy to imagine a doe hiding her fawns and then attempting to draw danger away from her offspring. She could have made sure the fawns were safe and secure and then gotten the attention of the coyotes and slowly pulled them away. But this time, while her maneuvers protected her young, for whatever reason, she was not able to escape the pursuit of the coyotes. More than a week had passed since finding the carcass, and I continued to see the pair of fawns in the field, getting nourishment from eating clover, grasses and other greens. An opportunity was about to present itself that would allow me to enact revenge on behalf of the twin fawns.

hunter. I’ve done some coyote hunting on a few occasions, but I have nothing to show for my efforts. On the other hand, my wife, Sheila, has her mounted coyote staring at me all the time, reminding me that I have yet to nail one of the critters. However, from what I gather from the real coyote hunting enthusiasts, is that right now may be a pretty good time to chase after them — something I may consider doing. Even these warm, late summer and early fall days can be pretty productive coyote hunting. Sure, there is a downside to hunting coyotes right now; for one, this warm weather can make a hunt very uncomfortable, not

to mention the assortment of bugs and mosquitoes that harass you while hunting, but there are also some positives. For starters, you will be hunting coyotes when they are probably at their highest numbers due to all the new spring additions. Also, keep in mind these newcomers have yet to be introduced to the hunting process, thus making them more likely to fall victim to a hunter’s gun. It’s a pretty safe bet that the coyotes have not been chased or harassed much all summer, which means that even older, more mature coyotes may let their guard down. I suspect coyotes are a lot like people.

You may want to concentrate your hunting during the cool morning or late day hours when things are cooler — or even nighttime hunting. Spotting coyotes this time of year due to heavy foliage could be a problem in some wooded areas, so now may be a good time to concentrate your efforts in or on the edge of fields where you have good long-range visibility. From what I’m hearing from the guys “in the know,” hunting those field edges with the addition of a prey-in-distress call, some coyote urine sprinkled on a nearby bush, and maybe even a decoy will greatly increase your chances of success.

to prepare for the upcoming small game seasons, turkey hunting, and of course, deer hunting, you can bet that if a coyote makes a chance appearance, it will likely fall victim to the hunter’s bow or gun. Coyote hunting really comes into its own, especially once most of the deer seasons have ended. With the many organized coyote hunts that are available throughout the state, there is even a chance to win some good money. That being said, there is no need to wait until after the deer seasons to hunt up a coyote since even now may be a good time to pursue them. I’ll admit it, I am not an avid coyote

A New Normal

B

efore they could board the waiting school bus, the anxious softball players and their coaches dutifully lined up, not to have their ticket punched, but rather to individually have their temperatures taken and answer a serious of healthrelated questions posed to them by the school’s athletic trainer and athletic director. Face coverings were required inside the bus, and the occupants took their seats mindful of the required social distancing. The bus driver’s now standard equipment included a face shield and

mask. As the bus began its journey to that most-anticipated first game of the season, a voice was heard to say, “I’m sure not a fan of these new-normal procedures.” Most likely, most people share that very sentiment, but it is becoming painfully obvious that if there is to be any type of scholastic sports seasons this autumn, this is the way things will be working. When the bus arrived at its destination, it was met by the hosting school’s athletic director with temperature gage in hand. A

MURRAY

COLLISION

half-hour after the players were screened before their departure, the same procedure was repeated. Once cleared, the players were directed to their bench area, which was void of all spectators. The coaches were required to wear masks, and arriving spectators were limited Scott Lowery to areas behind the field’s outfield fencing. BUT, with all that said, the first game of the season was played, participants abided by the stated rules, and two teams of young people were able to play the sport they loved. Just how much longer

this will be the case is anyone’s guess at this juncture. The question of “to play or not to play” is akin to a tennis match that is being volleyed back and forth by those entrusted with the delicate balance of maintaining the public health while providing some semblance of athletic participation normal. This column is being written before the scheduled first weekend of high school football last Friday. While I’m not sure how many of those games actually took place, the game between Loyalsock and Warrior Run was canceled the Wednesday prior following the discovery of a COVD-19 positive test following a scrimmage between the Lancers and Danville September 5th.

Governor Wolf ’s previous directive limited attendance at outdoor gatherings to 250. For football games, the collective number of players, coaches, officials, game personnel, cheerleaders, and bands in many cases already exceeds that number. Fans, and most importantly, parents, should be afforded the opportunity to see their sons and daughters participate, particularly critical, should an injury occur. Individual school districts are left to ponder the answer. Recently, the East Lycoming School District talked publicly about their intentions. “We’re trying to do what’s equitable for our students, parents, grandparents, and friends,” stated school board president Richard Michaels. Superintendent Michael Pawlik indicated that for football, two tickets would be available to parents of senior players and one ticket for parents of junior players. He added that athletic director Ken Tallman will soon be posting the particulars of the district’s plan for all sports. Certainly, no one likes what is certain to be the limited availability of access to local sporting events. Each school district is trying its best to provide the best of both worlds; sports and fans, during this difficult time when COVID-19 is the dreaded opponent. If we are to have any sports, EVERYONE involved must follow the established rules, whether we like it or not.

55 • Webb Weekly September 16, 2020

At that time, Loyalsock superintendent Jerry McLaughlin released a statement noting, “Any staff member serving as a football coach or player will be quarantined until September 18th. The PA Department of Health will continue to contact trace as they continue with this investigation.” On that same September 5th, a scheduled football scrimmage between Troy and South Williamsport was canceled just moments before it was to begin due to a positive COVID test. Subsequently, the Mountaineers September 11th and 18th home games with Muncy and CMVT have been canceled. The area high school football teams’ schedules have already seen a reduction from ten games to seven for most teams due to the pandemic restrictions. Athletic directors were busy configuring the new schedules, which, for the most part, are now limited to league games only, with further restrictions pertaining to travel in place in some areas. Heartland Athletic Conference teams are playing only league opponents, while schools in Tioga County (Wellsboro, North Penn, and Cowanesque Valley) are choosing not to play schools in Lycoming County and south. The revised regularseason schedules will conclude October 23rd. The future of District playoffs has yet to be determined. The question remains for those games that are scheduled to be played; will fans be permitted to watch?

Sporting Matters With Spence…

Friday Night Lights

I

have nothing but love and respect for Montoursville’s J.C. Keefer. The old-school football coach and I go back a long time. He has been a good chum over the years. I don’t get to see him much, but I will occasionally spot him at a local diamond. J.C. also loves the game of baseball and he mentors his kid’s travel ball teams. I admire his enthusiasm. He definitely has a gift. J.C. has an exceptional knowledge and gets the most out of his teams. Regardless of the sport. I reached out to Coach Keefer. I sent him a quick note to tell him that I re-

cently got the call. My friends at Webb Weekly asked if I would help broadcast a few high school games this fall. I wanted to talk with J.C. about his home opener. Something that I have done many times before. We had a great conversation that covered several topics. Mostly sports and fishing. Coach Keefer has a way with words. It was so good to hear his voice. I’m not a football guy, but after fifteen minutes I was ready to break something or tackle someone. Thankfully I was home alone. “It has been different,” Keefer explained.

“But to our team’s credit we have made the proper adjustments. The pandemic has shifted the way we do things, and we have been doing what we can to stay safe. The kids are used to it. Temperature checks since June. They seem to understand Jamie it. I can’t tell you how Spencer proud I am.” Coach Keefer and the 2020 Warriors are in unprecedented times. COVID-19 has changed the entire landscape but they are taking it in stride. Montoursville is currently in a hybrid phase. They are only sending students to school two days per and the future is unknown. We have all needed to make sacrifices, and J.C.’s players are not immune. Life is totally different, and this veteran coach understands the challenge. “People say this all the time,” Keefer expanded. “Play tonight like it’s your last. It might sound cliche. But that is really the case. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow. We can only control what we do today. My kids get that. We don’t need to talk about it. I was really impressed with our energy in our scrimmage last week. We came out ready to play. I am also pleased with our overall intensity in practice. Difficult when only half of your team is in school each day, but I really haven’t noticed any major change.” Things will be different this fall as our

local school districts are struggling with protocols. Loyalsock Area and South Side had to postpone the first two games. Coaches and players will need to quarantine. Unprecedented and unpredictable times. Boards are doing their very best to come up with the best policies. I continue to praise and pray for these administrations who are forced to make many tough decisions. There are surely no right or wrong answers, and I feel terrible for these kids. Spectators remains a hot topic. Last week I gave you my thoughts. One of the reasons why I decided to come out of retirement was to bring the parents and fans as many games as we can. “That’s a tough one,” Keefer acknowledged. “I’m a parent and I totally get it. If my boy was playing, I would feel the same way. We’ve done our very best here at Montoursville. I applaud our administration for coming up with a plan. We are hoping to give tickets to all of our senior parents. We also did the same with our opponent’s team. We have a beautiful stadium and we are able to spread out. We haven’t really talked about it as a team. I am sure it is on their minds, but we are just thankful for being able to play under the lights. It could be a lot worse.” Special thanks to Coach Keefer for the chat. I wish the 2020 Warriors the best of luck and beyond. I look forward to calling your game. Hopefully we will see each other again. Kudos and props to ALL of our local teams. We will get through this. Cheers.
