Postal Gratitude and Monster Buck Attitude
A
tip of my Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on the side to our local postal carriers. They do a great job each and every week making sure the Webb Weekly gets delivered right to your home. I consider these fine folks my partners in business. They do the heavy lifting and delivery end of the operation. The unofficial United States Postal Service motto goes, “Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” They can now add coronavirus to this creed. Throughout the pandemic, their efforts have continued without interruption. They have been on the front lines of delivery services across our Nation. In addition to your daily mail, the USPS is the largest deliverer of e-commerce in our Nation. This fact often goes overlooked. There has never been more asked of your neighborhood postman or woman in USPS history. Last week’s Webb Weekly, including the Home Improvement Guide, was 104 pages, delivered to 58,000 homes. Again, thank you to each and every post person; I appreciate your efforts. Webb Weekly spends around $600,000 a year with the USPS for this service. To me, it is an investment in every business that advertises
to make sure their message is seen, and an investment in the men and women that deliver our publication. There is nothing more important than keeping the circulation of business revenue within our local communities. I hope our commitment to the community, local businesses, and to the United States Postal Service has helped not only in supporting local commerce, but also in creating and providing job security. When you see your neighborhood post person tell them thank you and don’t forget to think of them at holiday time. So, this is where you thought I was going to talk about the United States Postal Service and the upcoming presidential election. I will talk about this in the near future. Just a little insight, it is completely unrealistic to ask the USPS to handle the responsibility of an election. It is logistically impossible, and absolutely overbearing to their current staffing model to take on such a task. There is no way they can provide the security and timely service required by election guidelines. As seen on the cover, this week is our annual kickoff to fall hunting and outdoors. As I often state, we are so blessed to live within this absolutely amazing stretch of Penn’s woods. The natural beauty and resources are a gift from God. There is just so
much to be enjoyed outdoors. There is something for everyone, from hunting and fishing to hiking and biking, to just taking a daily walk and enjoying all that’s going on around you. Make sure to include your kids and 4-legged friends. In my case, they both see better than me. Jim Webb, Jr. A shout out to the little girl and her family that pointed out the two beautiful bald eagles that were recently soaring over South Williamsport, I would have missed them. The beginning of the Pennsylvania archery season marks the kickoff to our Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. It’s hard to believe this will be our 13th season. A quick overview. The contest is named in honor of my Uncle Ron Maietta, who was an avid outdoorsman and left us way too soon, and Webb Weekly’s very own Ron Mingle, who has overseen the contest from the beginning. Although Ron has retired, he still can’t get away from me. The contest is simple; if you’re lucky enough to bag a buck, you can enter. All that is required is to bring your buck or antlers to Poust Taxidermy or Sauers Trading to get scored and registered. Of course, all Pennsylvania State Game Commission rules and regulations apply. So, here’s how you win. The biggest buck scored wins a first prize shoulder mount courtesy of Poust Taxidermy. Dana, along
with Sam, do absolutely amazing work. They have been with us for all 13 years — tip of my orange hunting cap to them for their amazing work and effort. The 2nd through 4th biggest bucks down win a $100 venison processing gift certificate from my good friends at Thompson’s in Jersey Shore. They do an unbelievable job of turning venison into your favorite venison edibles. I always strongly recommend the jalapeno and cheese hot dogs. Up next is why size doesn’t matter to enter our Monster Buck Contest. Any buck harvested is a trophy in the eyes of the beholder and can be registered to win our random drawing of a Remington 783 model rifle with all the trimmings courtesy of my good friends at Sauers Trading in South Side. Tip of my Remington cap to John and son Donnie for all they do. All state and federal firearm laws apply if you’re the lucky winner. Now here is the best part of the contest; Webb Weekly donates to the Multiple Sclerosis Society for every buck that’s entered. If you’re blessed enough to be successful this season, make a little extra effort and get that buck registered. By doing so, your buck earns instant bucks to help fight the battle against MS. Complete details of the contest can be found on page 39. So, let’s all get out and about and enjoy the beautiful fall weather and changing colors across the West Branch Valley. Please focus on what’s going on around you and be safe out there! God Bless America.

nyone who knows me, knows that I am notoriously early for everything. Obnoxiously so sometimes. I can’t help it. Being late gives me anxiety, and as Mr. Webb used to say, “If you’re early you’re on time, if you’re on time, you’re late, and if you’re late, you’re out the door.” So that means we can start celebrating ‘Adopt a Shelter Dog’ month early too! Though really, it starts October 1st, so I’m barely even early. Making the decision to adopt a dog, is a big decision. There is a lot to consider, and it’s easy to get caught up in cute puppy eyes and forget about the enormity of your decision. Luckily, the Lycoming County SPCA has some basic questions to ask yourself before you make the choice to adopt! So: • Many pets live 10 to 15 years. How old will you be? How old will your children be? • Is there a chance you could move in the next 10 years? Are you willing to restrict your choice of housing to accommodate a pet? • If the pet is for a child are you willing to assume the care of the pet? Children must have parental guidance to care for a pet regardless of their age. • Each breed of animal has genetic characteristics that need to be considered. Have you researched the breed that you are interested in? • Are you financially prepared for a pet? Consider the following expenses: spaying or neutering, basic veterinary care, flea preventative, heartworm preventative, license, food, grooming. I always considered myself a cat person, but you have all seen enough pictures of my big

butthead of a dog to know I am an equal opportunity pet person now. I can’t lie though. There were a lot of unexpected challenges that come with having a dog that Steph no amount of research Nordstrom and planning could have prepared me for. So in addition to the questions above, be sure that you are ready to be PATIENT. Really, really, patient. Also, please do your research on breed. If you work a lot of hours, or aren’t physically active, a husky (while adorable) probably isn’t the best fit for you. At the same time, if you love to run, walk and hike, a senior dachshund won’t be the right pick either. Don’t overlook the so-called bully breeds either. Some of the best, sweetest, friendly, dogs that I know (my own included), are considered ‘bully breeds.’ The good news is, that if you are ready to bring home a new furbaby for your family, the SPCA has a lot of great dogs just waiting for you to take them home and love them! They are only open by appointment at the moment, but you can check out who is up for adoption at lycomingspca.com. You can also get all of you paperwork filled out there too! Even if you aren’t ready to add a pet to your home, the SPCA can always use a little help. In addition to always-welcome monetary donations, the SPCA is also in need of: • Nylabones • Laundry detergent
Ruby is an absolute sweetheart. She can be a little hand shy at times, but she loves people. You may need to give her a few minutes to warm up. She doesn’t understand what toys are and will need help learning all of her basic commands, but she will be building a bond with you as she learns. Call the SPCA today at 570-3224646 to meet Ruby!
• Bleach • Fabric softener sheets • Cash donations to help pay for medicines • Postage stamps • Foil bagged dog treats • Pig ears • Gift cards for office supplies, department stores • Gasoline cards for Humane Officers trucks • Heavy load trash bags • Gift cards to purchase interactive toys. The SPCA does such great work for so many animals in the area and anything you can do to ease the way for them is always appreciated. Just remember that pets are a huge personal and financial responsibility so please don’t take it on unless you are fully prepared. Dogs especially need a lot of time, attention and dedication. Every pet at the SPCA is spayed or neutered and up-to-date on all of their vaccines so all they need from you is a home and love!

he other Sunday, I wanted to go fishing. The creeks needed some water, so I headed to the mighty Susquehanna. I stopped at Wegmans with my kayak strapped above. I grabbed a quick coffee and ran into a few chums. They asked where I was going, and I simply pointed to the Market Street Bridge. I parked near the train tracks on the South Side. Carried my boat and gear a good 300 yards. I waved and spoke to many folks who were walking on the path that morning. It was a gorgeous day in North Central, PA. I started paddling upstream as I wanted to hit some structure and maybe fish the dam. I threw a cast next to a concrete support. There I let my Heddon Torpedo float. I gave it a slight twitch and saw an immediate splash. These are my favorite lures to catch smallmouth bass. They mimic a distressed baitfish or a wounded frog. Fishermen would agree that a topwater bite is the very best. Whether it’s a dry fly or a plug, a visual explosion to indicate when to set the hook is paramount.
It was a decent-sized smallie. They are pound for pound the top local prize. He was putting up a good fight. I was using my ultralight rod and reel combo and 6lb.-test. This is my usual setup for the Susquehanna River from my kayak. It wasn’t a monster, but I suddenly noticed something strange. Everything came to a complete standstill, and it felt like I was snagged. I tried to get closer to see what was wrong. Perhaps the bass was wrapped around a log. As I approached, I saw a golden flash. My drag began to scream. I was so puzzled as it happened so quickly. Occasionally, bass will travel in groups, and you sometimes hook more than one. The Heddon Torpedoes have double trebles, and I have landed two fish at the same time. I have a picture to prove it. I continued to battle and tightened my drag. I was somehow gaining momentum, and I was about to get my first glimpse. My heart was pounding, and my hands started to shake. OH MY GOSH. I was definitely fighting two fish. OH MY GOSH. I not only had a bass, but there was also a massive Muskie on the line. This was unbelievable. A once in a lifetime ex-

rently has 4.3k likes and hundreds of comments. I have also been in touch with In-Fisherman for an upcoming article. Dude? Sure, it would have been great to land that muskie under the Market Street Bridge. But I am extremely blessed to have had the brief opportunity to tangle with a Susquehanna River monster from my kayak. Several have asked my thoughts on the size. I don’t know. 36 or 42 inches, maybe. Heck, next week it may climb to 50. I am also thankful that I decided to quit fighting the fish(es) and came home with proof of an unbelievable fishing story. Cheers.

perience. This elusive predator totally came out of nowhere and inhaled my Smallmouth. She refused to let go, and my poor bass was in her jaws. OH MY GOSH. I did the best I could but quickly realized I didn’t have a prayer. Remember, I was in my kayak using a 6 lb.-test. I wasn’t equipped with a net either. I considered paddling to the shore, but there was no way I’d keep them both hooked. The bass was still in her mouth, and it felt like I was doing circles, and I was hanging on for dear life. It was just a matter of time. I knew I had to do something fast. No one would ever believe me unless there was evidence. I immediately grabbed my phone and started to record. I was holding my rod with my left hand, as I began to describe. “I just hooked a Muskie — I don’t think I am going to land it — The fish explodes from the water — OH MY GOSH!” Perfect timing. Unfortunately, I lost both fish, but I managed to capture some incredible footage. A few of my good friends helped me splice my video, and a few of our still frames are now going viral. I am not kidding. My posts were shared on several fishing pages and platforms. EVERYTHING SMALLMOUTH cur-

Fundraiser at Hatchet House To Benefit Suicide Awareness By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
F
or most 13-year-old, eighth grade boys, life is filled with various types of diversions, things such as sports. According to his mom, Amber, Brayden Seasholtz is currently on the football team and he loves sports! He takes after his dad and loves the Pittsburgh Pirates, Penn State football and wrestling, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Las Vegas Raiders. He has other interests such as girls and various other things, but Brayden’s life took an unexpected and tragic turn. Two years ago, Brayden’s father, Brennan Seasholtz, took his own life. After the shock of this unspeakable tragedy, Brayden resolved to turn his grief into positive action. He and his family became involved with Out of the Darkness and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention through a post on Facebook. For the past two years, they have been involved in the Out of the Darkness walk, held in Lock Haven. This event allows people who have been affected by suicide, whether they struggle with mental health or someone they love struggles or has lost their battle, come together and show support for one another. Over the last two decades, the suicide
rate in the United States has sharply increased, making it the 10th leading cause of death in our country according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suicide now claims more lives than automobile accidents each year, and some leaders in the mental health field believe that our deteriorating mental health care system is partially to blame. Each year the Seasholtzs create a walking team, Bull14, and raise money for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Last year, 2019, Brayden held a Coin Wars at school where he raised just over $2,600 and a Kickball Tournament raising $2,300. All together last

seen on the field and in the classroom, blurring the lines between activewear and daily wear. Having recognized the multi-purpose nature of athleisure wear, many companies are now producing garments that are not only functional for a workout, but also everyday wear, hence pockets, structure, and more dynamic colors and patterns. I saw a man walking his dog in dark teal sweats with neon stripes down the sides and a coordinated windbreaker, now tell me that’s not a fashion statement! Athleisure elements have also made their way into more traditional day clothes and evening wear: Think side-striped trousers, neoprene trench coats, sneaker-style high heels, and leather leggings being a few examples of athleisure’s influence. I just hope no one is doing yoga in leather leggings. The tricky part of pulling off athleisure style is looking intentional, not sloppy. Your plain old gray sweats at work are a hard sell unless you’re working from home. I recommend staying clear of anything too baggy when sporting an athleisure look outside of the house. You can get away with an oversized garment on top if you balance it out with something more fitted on the bottom, and vice versa. For women, that could be an off the shoulder sweatshirt paired with leggings and sneakers; for men, drawstring pants and a slim-fit Henley shirt. Or, if you just
want a flair of athleisure in your look, swap out your standard footwear for a statement sneaker. The essence of athleisure is based on practicality and function, so steer clear of pieces that don’t serve your needs, even if they appear trendy. Brands that do athleisure particularly well are Athleta and Old Navy, both subsidiaries of GAP. For high-tech outdoorsy athleisure, check out Columbia Sportswear. For clothes that look like workout wear, but feel like loungewear, while also offering support like shapewear, try Girlfriend Collective and Outdoor Voices. I really like the “kits” of matching tops and bottoms from Outdoor Voices in particular, and the standard black leggings on offer at Girlfriend Collective. Lastly, for purely comfortable and affordable loungewear, head on over to Uniqlo, which has both a lounge and innerwear categories for sensible layering options for the coming winter. Speaking of winter, what makes athleisure so versatile is that it can be worn and help you through all four seasons. Cozy knitwear and waterproof puffer coats for the winter. High-performance sneakers for the spring, sweat-wicking t-shirts for the summer. And here for fall, thermal leggings, and fleece zip-ups. Keeping all of that in mind, if you really look at your wardrobe, you probably have already boarded the athleisure train and left the station!

“I was very apprehensive about getting hearing aids. I went to Artisan Hearing Technologies and I immediately felt comfortable, and welcomed. The counseling and explanations were very easy to understand. No appointments that I have been to have been rushed. All the time that I needed was there. The attention to detail in every aspect of this was so good I didn’t even have any questions that she did not already answer. Most people wonder about price. Her prices were all inclusive and better than the other hearing centers because I did shop around. My hearing aids are worth every penny. They are so comfortable, I have forgotten to take them out at night. On a rating scale I gave Artisan Hearing Technologies, I give two thumbs up. I did not want to put my picture in the paper, but my experience at Artisan was so good I did it anyway.

County Hall Corner: Team Lycoming County vs. COVID-19 By Larry Stout
I
n the United States, sports reflect life. When I lived abroad, I often had to help the interpreters who would be translating for the Americans who would visit because they inadvertently used so many sports metaphors and did not realize it. Those not familiar with the game of baseball have no idea what is meant by terms like “swing and miss,” “foul ball, “knock it out of the park,” and the like. Translators scratched their heads when Americans would refer to football euphemisms like “getting to the end zone,” “it’s fourth and long,” or my favorite, “Hail Mary pass.” We use these expressions without thinking because sports have always brought us together in this country. That is, until now. In the past, fans who were of different ages, nationalities, races, educational levels, and political persuasions could sit down together in the stands or in a bar in front of the television and cheer on their team. Today, sports are separating us, no longer common entertainment for its own sake, but rather a part of the social and political turmoil that is fraying the
fabric of our common national culture. But not here at Webb Weekly! Allow me to review 2020 from a football game perspective, noting that as we are entering October, we are about to begin the fourth quarter between Team Lycoming County vs. COVID-19. In the first quarter, Team Lycoming County (TLC), quarterbacked by Commissioners Metzger, Mussare, and Mirabito (3Ms), hardly made any mention of the opposition. Looking back at the articles in County Hall Corner from January to March, it seemed the TLC were on a roll. Chairman Metzger chaired a tight meeting and throughout county government there was a new wave of

COUNTY HALL optimism. Departments were getting reorganized, long ignored problems were getting addressed — our team was making first down after first down. Team COVID-19 was out there, but was so quiet it seemed like they weren’t even on the field yet. But when Team COVID-19 showed up, they did it with a bang! As the first quarter was approaching its end, a very unlucky Friday, the 13th of March hit the state and the county with a hammer blow. It was a full moon, the clocks were moving ahead, and there was to be a temporary, two-week COUPON

shutdown of schools and activities involving crowds to “flatten the curve” of the impending virus. Our opponent, COVID-19, which was on field all this time, now brought up the first-string players, and suddenly the two weeks stretched into two more weeks. Even before that ended, we were introduced to a stoplight color-code world where our team had to get a first down before we could go from ‘red’ to ‘yellow.’ Then it felt like we were in the infamous December 31, 1988 NFL playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears known

their best to at least keep our team in the game, but it seemed that the head coach in Harrisburg, Governor Wolf, kept calling the plays that kept at least two of the three Ms (Metzger and Mussare) wondering if the coach had looked at the scoreboard lately. What good is it to win against the spread of the disease when you are crushing the economy in the process? If the second quarter was brutal, the third quarter of June, July, August, was barbaric. Small businesses especially were in dire peril of surviving. There were massive job layoffs. The big box stores were allowed to stay open but those that could not ensure ‘social
distancing’ were to remain closed. Federal and State aid money was slowly becoming available, which was of some help to be sure, but watching this play out was like the old days of ‘three yards and a cloud of dust’ football. It was ugly, but at least the ball was moving forward. Which brings us to now — entering the fourth quarter — which begins October 1st. Listening to the 3Ms in their public huddle at the County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, September 22nd, it appeared they were entering the final quarter with a host of concerns. QB Metzger pointed the finger again at Coach Governor Wolf ’s actions of
placing severe restrictions on high school sports with fans. QB Mussare was concerned about the social impact of the state government making a money grab by placing gambling machines in low income areas. QB Mirabito was concerned about the 400 workers who lost their job in the ShopVac shutdown. Team Lycoming County is frustrated because Team COVID-19 seems to be winning without scoring. There have been almost no serious cases, evidenced by hospital reports that only one person has been placed on a ventilator in the past three weeks. But our team has to keep plugging along. This is one game that everyone will be glad when it’s over.

as the “Fog Bowl.” In that game, the players could not even see the sidelines due to the dense fog. In the same way, there was so much confusion coming out of Harrisburg, Team TLC could not find where the yard markers were to tell them how to get from the “Yellow” phase to “Green.” That second quarter of March, April, and May was brutal. It felt like Team COVID-19 was scoring touchdowns every time they had the ball as many events that were institutions, such as the Home Builders Show, the Lycoming County Fair, even the iconic Little League World Series, fell by the wayside. Our quarterbacks, the 3Ms, were doing

winter months. There is nothing to making a big pot of soup and saving a bunch for later. Now, I am not jumping in front of a car for a hot bowl of soup or anything, but I would jump over hoops to enjoy a delicious bowl of soup on a cold fall night. Especially this one. Creamy Chicken and Wild Rice Soup Hot soups and cold fall nights; this is just what you need! • 3 cups of cooked, seasoned chicken breast (well-seasoned) • 1/2 cup chopped onion • 2 stalks of chopped celery • 1 medium carrot, shredded or chopped • 1/2 stick of butter • 2 tsp garlic • 32 oz. chicken broth • 3/4 cup wild rice • 1/4 tsp of salt and pepper • 1/3 cup heavy cream • 1/2 cup milk
In a large saucepan, sauté the onion, carrot and celery in butter until tender. Then add the garlic, let simmer for 2-3 minutes. Gradually add broth. Stir in the rice, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cover, cook and stir for 15 minutes or until thickened. Add chicken. Stir in milk and heavy cream; cook and simmer for 20 minutes to let all the flavors get through the soup. Trust me, it was even better after the simmer time. Enjoy!

Managing a Healthcare Crisis: Strategies to Protect & Provide
EE

hile drinking can be a socially acceptable part of our lives, lifestyle changes and challenges resulting from the pandemic including working from home, kids stuck at home, lack of routine, boredom, and increased uncertainty about the future may have you reaching for a glass of wine or mixed beverage more frequently than before. The truth is you aren’t alone. Nielsen reports alcohol sales in stores were up 54% in late March compared to that time last year, while online sales were up nearly 500% in late April. According to a Morning Consult poll of 2,200 U.S. adults conducted in early April, 16% of all adults said they were drinking more during the pandemic, with higher rates among younger adults: One in four millennials and nearly one in five Gen Xers said they had upped their alcohol intake. Unwinding with a glass of wine or a “quarantini” might seem like a good way to cope with stress. But for some people, too much alcohol is making the ongoing health crisis worse, especially those with existing heart conditions or family histories of heart illness. Below are the truths behind five myths
related to alcohol and heart health. Myth: Moderate drinking is acceptable and is good for the heart. Fact: This isn’t true for everyone, especially if you have underlying health issues. Your risks could be higher than any benefits. The American Heart Association reports that studies that show alcohol raises HDL, or “good” cholesterol and lowering the risk of dangerous blood clots show no direct link between alcohol itself and lower risk. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, getting regular exercise, not smoking, and coping with stress can provide more heart healthy benefits and have almost no risk. Myth: Red wine will help prevent heart disease. Fact: We’ve all heard about scientific evidence linking red wine and heart health. Red wine has compounds that might lower the risk of heart disease, but so do grapes. Those studies also don’t take into consideration other health habits individuals have to reduce their overall risk. It might be that moderate red wine drinkers are more likely to have a healthier diet and lifestyle. Myth: Moderate drinking is acceptable. Fact: That depends on your definition of moderate. All alcoholic drinks have different numbers of calories and different amounts of alcohol. The American Heart

not be quick to judge. Ultimately, the choices we make are ours, as I am a huge believer in free will. However, how we turn out as adults is complicated and ever changing. Some people have advantages that others might not. Whether they are large, such as loving parents and a strong education, or small such as receiving a kindness at a critical moment. Our intellect, health, neighborhood, friends, family, work, etc., all are small pieces of a much larger puzzle called life. That, combined with both small and large choices we make, nudge us on an ever changing path, and we should not judge others until we have taken a deeper look.

Q: A:
How should I prepare my home for photos and showings? When you list your home, if you want premium price, it needs to be in premium condition! It’s very important that buyers see your home in its best light so that they can picture themselves living there. Even though they are looking at how many bedrooms and bathrooms you have, their ability to imagine living there day to day is ultimately what causes them to make an offer. So, to get your home looking “HGTV ready,” here are the top 10 things to do:

but I believe it goes deeper than that. I believe that on some level, they are able to predict the future success of this person based on the intangible things they are observing such as verbal and non-verbal cues, choices that person made in certain situations, even the way they look. Furthermore, I believe the act of kindness and small favoritism can influence that student’s success by encouraging them to make other choices later on. So, in the end, we have this big soup pot of genetics, nurturing parents, friends, supportive environment, and influences that lays the groundwork for choices we make. My message, however, is simple — do

illiamsport area car dealers featuring General Motors vehicles are beginning to feel the damaging effects of the United Auto Workers strike against General Motors. Five dealers participating in a survey said their supply of 1971 automobiles would probably be sold out next month and that no additional models would be shipped in for at least a week or month after the strike is settled. Henry M. Foltz, owner of the Buick outlet said the used car market may affected inasmuch as used cars are obtained as new cars are purchased. He said if a shortage results, the price of them may be increased. Mr. Foltz said both his parts and service departments would remain open even if the strike continues for several months. Just how long the strike will go is unknown, but John Powell, a local Chevrolet dealer expressed fear that it may be several months before UAW and
GM settle their differences. “We’ve got enough merchandise to last a month. We’ll continue to supply parts and service and shift our advertising to used cars.” Ward R. Gilbert, a Chevrolet dealer in Montoursville, also plans to provide parts and service despite the fact “it will cost us about $2,000 a month to stay open.” Shea Cadillac-Oldsmobile is also feeling the paralyzing effects of the strike. The company’s president, John R. Shea termed the strike “a rotten shame,” and said he would have only one Cadillac and five Oldsmobiles for display purposes. The situation is no better at Pringle Pontiac. The owner, Mickey Pringle, said he had only three 1970 models left and was attempting to get three 1971 cars for display purposes. He said he expected the strike to go on for some time but added that he would remain open. “You’ve got to stay open and lose money — that’s it,” he said. “Otherwise you jeopardize your operation.”

es, I know, all the big game hunting seasons are upon us, but it’s also the season for another kind of big game hunting, or maybe I should say big game fishing; I’m talking bass and the pike family. While I plan to do my share of deer hunting, you can bet I will also put my share of time in on any number of local lakes. Some of that time will definitely be spent pursuing fall season panfish but now is also a good time of year to pursue bass, pickerel, muskies, and northern pike. Admittedly when I hit a lake this time of the year, I am usually concentrating on bass, but those long bodied, toothy critters are also
very willing to gobble up your bass offerings. If you are serious about fishing for northern pike, your best bet would be to head to Presque Isle Bay near Erie or the Allegheny River since we don’t have much in the way of pike in our local waters. Muskies are available, but it usually takes some serious fishing to hook into one, but pickerel on the hand can offer some pretty serious action. As I mentioned earlier, when I head out onto a lake after the “big game,” I’m usually geared up for bass, but those same lures and techniques will take other fish as well, and to be honest, it’s all about that throbbing fight at the other end of the line. I use an assortment of equipment for my bass fishing — several different bait-casting outfits

and usually a couple of different open-faced spinning outfits. I tend to go with the spinning rigs when I’m fishing more snag-free water, and I want to make a more subtle presentation. Casting outfits are great for working weeds and other cover where heavier lines and more powerful gear is needed. There is a huge assortment of artificial lures and techniques available to fishermen today, and a good many of them will take bass and other big game fish, but we all have our favorites. When you’ve had success with your good old favorites, it’s hard to try something new, but sometimes it can really pay off. I was not a big fan of the wacky worm rig a number of years ago, but when a buddy of mine caught twice as many bass as I did one day, it didn’t take me long to learn the new technique. I’ve been out a few times over the past month, and the wacky worm rig is always in the ready when I launch my boat, and
so far, it has gotten results on every trip. Of course, I have a number of other rods loaded and ready to go; one is always rigged with a Carolina-rigged worm or lizard, and one always has a Texas-rigged worm or lizard in the ready. Don’t neglect those mid and deep-diving crankbaits, and you may also want to have some spinnerbaits and even some weedless spoons close by. The water temperatures are cooling now, and bass and the pike species could be almost anywhere. I haven’t mentioned walleyes yet, but even they will be willing adversaries this time of year, and the lures already mentioned can be just as productive for them. I know it’s time to get that rifle sighted in and to practice with your compound, but it’s also time to take out a couple of your favorite fishing rods and hit a local lake or river for some of that other “big game” excitement.

Hunting Season is Upon Us! By Jon Pries
I
think that most folks these days would agree that it certainly has been a crazy year so far! In particular, the coronavirus has disrupted our usual routines and greatly affected our daily lives. With little exception, everyone has experienced some kind of negative reaction to this pandemic. But good things do await us in the coming months. The hot, humid and hazy summer days have recently evolved into cool days and crisp evenings, sometimes even producing a light frost to greet the morning sun. It is the signal most of us have been eagerly awaiting – the coming of fall, the colorful display of our hardwood forests and the beginning of the hunting seasons! The squirrel season has been underway statewide since September 12 and runs through to near the end of November, with two additional seasons occurring over the winter months. With a daily limit of 6 and a possession limit of 18, squirrels provide an excellent opportunity for early fall hunting, and the perfect scenario for mentoring a youth. While squirrel hunting is not as popular as it once was, it remains one of the best opportunities to spend time teaching a new hunter about all facets of hunting safety, ethics and responsibilities along with the importance of patience, staying alert and learning from watching other forms of wildlife. As a bonus, one of the most memorable and quite delicious aspects of squir-
rel hunting is the making of “squirrel pot pie” in an old cast iron Dutch oven. Throughout the month of October, the statewide seasons for Bobwhite quail, ruffed grouse, rabbit and pheasant will open. While each of these species of game have their own appeal, hunting any of them is so much more enjoyable when you have the opportunity to hunt with a well trained dog. It is truly a thrill to watch a pointer lock up and go on point when it zeroes in on a pheasant or grouse. The sound of a beagle baying as it trails behind a cottontail rabbit is one you will always remember with a smile once you have heard it in the field! Big game hunting begins this coming Saturday, October 3, in the form of archery deer hunting. The season continues until November 14, with an added day of Sunday archery deer hunting on Sunday, November 15. The muzzleloader, antlerless only season runs from October 17 to October 24 and a Junior-Senior special firearms antlerless only season is held from October 2224. The regular firearms season begins on November 28 and goes until December 12, with a day of Sunday hunting on Sunday, November 29. Finally, the flintlock antlered and antlerless season occurs from December 26 to January 23. Fall turkey hunters can pursue both hens and gobblers beginning October 31 and ending on various dates, depending on the WMU in question. In order to increase your chances for fall turkeys, follow

October 17 to 24, and this year during the special Junior and Senior special antlerless deer firearms season, a black bear is also legal game. The additional seasons for some species and the added Sunday hunting opportunities will add to your chances for success this fall. Whether you prefer hunting upland small game or one of the big game species, this fall should be a banner harvest. Take advantage of all of these opportunities to “bring home the bacon” – or in this case, the wild game meats! You not only have the chance to get outside and enjoy time in the fresh air, but there can be no healthier dinner fare than that provided by any of the wild game we hunt right here in Pennsylvania.

the food sources. Recently cut corn fields, or freshly producing oak trees, especially white oaks are excellent locations, and as long as this dry weather continues, water sources, such as brooks, streams and ponds are a good bet as well. Finally, the fall hunting seasons include ample opportunities to hunt black bear throughout the state. The regular statewide firearms season is a four day season from Saturday, November 21 to Tuesday, November 24 – this includes another Sunday hunting opportunity for this year’s hunters – Sunday, November 22. Statewide, there is also a season to pursue black bear with archery equipment, and it runs from October 17 to November 7. Concurrently, a muzzleloader bear season is held statewide from

The Roving Sportsman… Hunting Pennsylvania Black Bear By Jon Pries
T
he big game species that can be hunted in Pennsylvania are the elk, whitetail deer, black bear and wild turkeys. For the average hunter, the chance to get an elk in our state is quite remote because of the limited number of animals and the slim chance of ever being drawn. When you consider the deer, bear and turkeys, most hunters would tend to agree that taking a black bear in Pennsylvania is the greatest challenge, with the slimmest chance of success. But, while we do not have a spring bear season like numerous other states, the opportunities for fall black bear hunting are even greater than in past years. In just over two weeks, the archery bear season will be held at the same time as the archery deer season. The bear season runs statewide from October 17 to November 7. Additionally, the muzzleloader bear season is being held from October 17 to 24. Further, this year during the Junior and Senior

3-day antlerless deer season, from October 22 – 24, black bear can be taken. Finally, the regular statewide firearms season goes from Saturday, November 21 right through to Tuesday, November 24 – and, yes, that includes a day of Sunday hunting on November 22. This all reflects a much greater opportunity to take a Pennsylvania black bear this fall. There are several techniques in hunting black bear and one of the most effective is the organized drive. The “drive” is used by numerous hunting clubs and camps throughout the state and by neighboring groups of hunters who get together to participate in this annual event. Since black bear will usually bed down during daylight hours in some of the nastiest terrain and thickest cover, organizing a group of hunters to push through these bedding areas can be very fruitful. “Still hunting” for bear is a bit more difficult, but especially with some preseason scouting under your belt, can also be very productive for bear hunters. Here, a single hunter or just

they can harvest it and will often be open to allow hunting of bears. The key is to be responsible and respectful of the landowners and do not wait until the very last minute to seek permission to hunt. Offering a hand with splitting some firewood or presenting the farmer with a homemade apple pie will go a long way to helping “seal the deal!” Through the years, I have frequently heard people say that they have tried eating black bear meat, but just don’t enjoy it. Quite to the contrary, black bear meat is one of my favorites. A roast is delicious when prepared properly. The secret is trimming off all of the excess fat before roasting. Then, roast it slowly on a rack so that more of the fat will drip from the meat during cooking, and slice the meat across the grain for presentation along with potatoes and mixed vegetables. Another tasty way to use bear meat is in the making of breakfast sausage. From the thrill of hunting black bears in Pennsylvania to the enjoyment of presenting the meat at the dinner table, our black bear is truly a prize worth pursuing.

two or three hunters who are coordinating their efforts will slowly move through the woods, in an effort to spot a bear, either in a bedding area or while enroute to or at a feeding location. In still hunting, the feeding locations can be critical. Throughout the months of October and November, there will be some standing corn fields, some freshly harvested fields and numerous hardwood stands with oak trees that are producing acorns – a favorite and important food source for bears as they try to put on a layer of fat to help make it through the winter months ahead. If we continue to have a lack of rain, water sources such as streams and ponds can be productive in late evening or early morning hunting hours. If you do not yet have a place to bear hunt this fall, then you need to get busy over the next week or so to locate a spot. If you can find some standing corn fields that are near hardwood forests, you need to be knocking on landowner’s doors to seek permission to hunt for bears. Generally speaking, farmers and landowners are not very happy when neighboring black bears are devouring their corn crop before

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…
Hunting Regulations – Old and New
W
ith the archery hunting season about to get underway on October 3, I’ve been putting as much practice time in as possible with my compound; hopefully, the practice pays off. As we move into the fall hunting seasons, I also like to make it a point to review the Hunting and Trapping Digest that you get when you acquire your
licenses — not exactly exciting reading but essential, nevertheless. Regulations regarding baiting have been around for some time; sometimes misunderstood and other times just ignored. Except for a few rare exceptions in the Southeast part of the state, baiting is illegal in Pennsylvania. The use of certain scents is legal, and it’s pretty clearly explained in the regulation booklet. Of course, many hunters
never bother to read or check the regulations, and I’m sure there are a number of hunters who just choose to ignore the rules regarding baiting and try to get away Ken Hunter with it. It is unlawful to hunt in or around any area where artificial or natural bait, food, hay, grain, fruit, nuts, salt, chemicals, or minerals,
including their residues-regardless, the type or quantity has been placed to lure game. This restriction does not pertain to hunting near areas where accepted farming or habitat management practices are taking place. Estrous scents and lures and non-food cover scents are legal. For example, I use fox urine on my archery hunting boots to cover human scent, and I use doe-in-heat in a scrape to attract a buck. Sorryno apple scent permitted. Moving on to some new

within two weeks of the close of the deer season. Stands must also be conspicuously marked with an identification tag that includes the owner’s first and last name and legal home address or the CID number that appears on the owner’s hunting license or a number issued by the Game Commission. Finally, another new law is in regard to the use of fluorescent orange; fluorescent orange is no longer required while archery hunting for deer. Remember, archers in the past had to wear fluorescent orange while moving or post orange while in a fixed position during all overlap seasons. Even though it’s no longer required, it is still highly recommended; I think I will continue to use the fluorescent orange for my own safety. Much of what I’ve outlined here has to do with the upcoming archery season, but much of it also applies to other seasons. Be sure to check your hunting digest for regulations regarding other seasons.

regulations, there will be three Sundays permitted for hunting this year. November 15 for archery deer season, November 22 for bear hunting, and November 29 for deer hunting. Hunters utilizing private land to hunt on any of the three selected Sundays must carry written permission from the landowner — something tells me that’s going to be interesting. Another new regulation to be aware of is the “purple paint law.” Landowners now have the option of using purple paint rather than signs to post their property. These are vertical purple paint lines that are at least eight inches long and one inch wide, and lines are not to be more than 100 feet apart. They should be no less than three feet or no more than five feet from the ground. The purple is essentially a no trespassing sign. Remember, too, while not a new law, you cannot place your tree stand on state land sooner than two weeks before the start of the season, and they must be removed

Logic would indicate that such items being placed there by Montoursville supporters would be next to impossible to pull off; impressionable teenagers illogically assumed they were being disrespected. The team wouldn’t have needed a bus to get to the game. Instantly fired-up, they couldn’t wait to get to Montoursville, where they won the game. Needing no outside motivation, a group of South Williamsport junior high school softball players are continuing the winning habits that excited the community last summer during the Little Mountaineer Little League’s march to the World Series in Portland, Oregon. Coached by Tom O’Malley, the young Mountaineer ladies have continued their development this fall.
Earlier this month, with only one 14-yearold on their roster, and including nine members of that World Series team, the team competed in and won a 16 and under USA tournament. During that tournament, the team finished off one victory in a most unusual way pulling off a game-ending triple play. Holding a two-run lead, the opponent had runners on first and second, with no outs and their cleanup hitter at the plate. She smashed what appeared to be a line drive to the outfield when seemingly out of nowhere, second baseman Gianna Goodman dove to snag the liner. The base runners were off as the ball was hit. Goodman shuffled the ball to shortstop Sage Lorson for the second out, and Lorson’s throw to first baseman
Abby Lorson completed the triple play. Later in the tournament’s championship game, the young team’s defense again shined. Pitcher Alizabeth Schuler threw only 58 pitchers in the seven-inning win. The performance was noteworthy as she did not strike out or walk a single batter. The ball was put in play, and the defense responded with near perfection. Throughout the season, the team has completed double plays and twice frustrated opponents by throwing out runners at first base from right field in what appeared to be base hits. Like life itself, sports are often measured by ‘what have you done for me lately.’ No one knows what the future may hold, but the future of South Williamsport softball appears to be headed in the right direction.

material, and there was a little edge going into the game.” Whether real or contrived, using opponents’ comments to fire up the troops has been a staple in many a coaches’ handbook. Back in my own high school playing days, one of the most memorable was employed by legendary South Williamsport coach Rod Morgans. Prior to departing for a Saturday afternoon game against Montoursville, Mountaineer players arrived at their locker room to an unexpected sight. There amongst their pads and helmets were blue & gold balloons and streamers and hinted allegations from the coaches regarding some pre-game shenanigans by their opponents.

early. They inflicted the mercy-rule by the half and led 42-0 in the third. Props to the Bucks as they scored the next 24. Bucktail only had 19 kids on their roster. Bailey Hadzinikolov has a tough name to spell. He was an animal and recorded a lot of tackles. Ty Nixon and Ethan Gush ran the ball well. They were both close to 100 yards. Quarterback Branson Eyer throws the ball well. His cousin Ross is a nice target. Muncy did well, and we had several people stream in. You have to watch your Ps and Qs because you never know who might be logged in. I have nothing against Renovo. I swear. The issues of allowing fans, especially parents, at high school games, remains a

hot topic. Both Montoursville and Muncy did well and included as many as they could. Providing a LIVE STREAM with commentary is a very nice feature. Many people have thanked us for doing so. It makes me feel important even when people say they hit the mute. Governor Wolf hasn’t budged, and the state Department of Education has been asking schools to comply, which had been set at 250 outdoors and 25 in. Then the courts ruled that it was unconstitutional. To be continued. State House Republicans lost a recent vote to override Wolf ’s veto of a bill that would have given school boards the ability to make their own decisions. It had passed in the
House earlier this month, but the override tally came short of the supermajority. Now what? While the spectator issue continues, a number of large schools have already opted to go their own way and allow some fans. Altoona said they would allow 3,400 spectators at Mansion Park, which is 33% of its capacity Friday. Dang. “If schools decide to increase the 25/250 limits, they should exercise caution and use good judgment in setting numbers for attendance at indoor and outdoor sports,” Dr. Robert Lombardi from the PIAA explained. Thanks for the guidance, Bob. Cheers.

Warriors are loaded. The boys up front played spectacular as Montoursville scored 56 points and outgained their opponent 406 to 94. Maddix Dalena threw for 179 yards and two TDs. Rocco Pulizzi ran for 130 and 12 points. Dylan Moll is a stud, and he had 142 all-purpose yards. Dillon Young has great hair. The Warrior’s defense looked sharp. They forced six Midd West turnovers. Isaiah Fenner and younger brother Marco Pulizzi each returned an interception for a score. It was a great night in Montoursville. I even said hi to many old friends. I found myself in Muncy the following week. Both Jim Webb and I did the game with Bucktail. The Indians were rolling
