Our Red and Blue Nation Must Reunite As One

“S

ome People Live an Entire Lifetime and Wonder if They Have Ever Made a Difference in the World. A Veteran Doesn’t Have that Problem.” - President Ronald Reagan A Webb Weekly salute and sincere thank you to all our Veterans. May you have a blessed day. If you are receiving our publication on Tuesday or early Wednesday, just a reminder about our annual Veterans Day Breakfast. We are again teaming up with Dolly’s Diner on this special day to serve our area veterans a free all-American breakfast. Thank you to the Dolly’s staff for rolling out the Red, White, and Blue carpet at all three locations. Breakfast will be served from open until noon. As I am penning my column, we are still awaiting the final result and/or decision of who the 46th President of the United States of America will be. I have so many thoughts of which I better keep to myself. At least until the truth and the supporting facts are revealed. I trust nothing viewed, read, or heard in today’s world. I always look for the answers from more than one source. Anytime I hear “trust me” or “trust someone” the red flag goes up. This applies double to scientists, but that’s a

topic for another day. So, here are my positive thoughts in regard to the election and our Nation moving forward. What an absolutely amazing Election Day it was, not only here at home but from sea to shining sea. The record turnout was the very best way to honor every Veteran. This is exactly what every presidential election should look like. A most special opportunity that is often taken for granted that has been paid for in blood by the American soldier. The very best part of the President Trump versus challenger Joe Biden process was the voter turnout of the American people. To me, no matter who wins, this signifies hope for the future. The more new and young voters we get involved, the better. This only strengthens our Nation. The Red, White, and Blue energy worn and conveyed by so many Americans no matter of party affiliation was greatly appreciated. Whether it was a hat, t-shirt, or button, it does my heart good on any day, but especially on election day to see our colors. It made me smile to see the pride and how much the sticker that said “I voted” meant to so many; I assume most were first-time voters. The dedication and attention to detail displayed by our local poll workers and

election officials were off the charts. They did a tremendous job of taking care of “We the People” who formed unbelievable lines at most voting precincts. It was a long day-and-night for many of these folks, and they answered the call with Jim flying colors. A special shout out Webb, Jr. to Lycoming County Director of Elections Forrest Lehman and his staff. Not only did they oversee a record Election Day in Lycoming County in which 58,354 folks voted, they made sure that every mail-in ballot received was processed by midnight. The last number I heard was they had counted over 13,000 mail-in/absentee ballots. What a truly remarkable job well done. The American people’s anticipation to view the election results Tuesday evening after the voting ended was like the buzz and energy created prior to the Super Bowl. Everybody wanted to watch the game unfold while keeping an eye on the scoreboard. Many of whom enjoyed food and beverage, similar to a tailgate party while doing so. I look forward to this after every highly contested election; it was nice to see so many people with the same Patriotic spirit. I hate to even mention the following because I don’t know what has transpired since I’ve penned this article, and it

arrived in your mailbox. Another very positive takeaway from election night in America was the peace and calm. As I waited for what has been 2020 to spill over into the 1st Tuesday of November, it didn’t happen. I believe if the process would have ended with President Trump being re-elected or Joe Biden being elected, things would have ended just that way on November 3rd. Unfortunately, I know the further we get away from that day without officially electing a president, the greater the appearance of election injustice becomes to both parties, which creates a much higher probability of chaos. I pray for our Country that this doesn’t happen. This is the perfect segue to finish up my thoughts for the week. I love and respect our great Nation as much as any fellow American. I think an election like this is exactly what our Nation needed, and I appreciate both parties’ passionate feelings about who our next president should be. The most important thing we all need to remember is that we are all on the same team. For the good of our Nation, we must all come together in support of our next president. There is just simply too much that needs to be addressed at home and abroad for us to be a nation divided. I believe all Americans working for the good want the same thing, to pass on a better America to our children, grandchildren, and future generations. God Bless America.

t’s about how we treat our veterans every single day of the year. It’s about making sure they have the care they need and the benefits that they’ve earned when they come home. It’s about serving all of you as well as you’ve served the United States of America.” ~ Barack Obama As always, here are all the ways we should be thanking our veterans, active duty service men and women and those who have given their lives for our country. Please remember those who have served that are STILL sacrificing these things on a regular basis because as much as people like to boast patriotism in this country, we still aren’t taking proper care of our veterans. Williamsport’s Veterans Memorial Park To Feature Gold Star Family Monument By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

illiamsport’s Veterans Memorial Park is one of the most striking and extensive tributes to our nation’s veterans that can be seen anywhere. It recently had another interesting feature when a former Navy A-6 Intruder jet was placed there. It is about to receive another notable and reverential component when the Central Pennsylvania Gold Star Families Monument is placed there. Work on the monument is expected to be completed by September of 2021. Some of you may be asking, “what is a “Gold Star Mother?” They are women entitled to display a gold star on a service flag as the mother, stepmother, adoptive mother, or foster mother of a United States Armed Forces member that died while engaged in action against an enemy recognized by the Secretary of Defense. There is an organization for Gold Star Mothers called “American Gold Star Mothers,” whose mission is finding strength in the fellowship of other Gold Star Mothers

who strive to keep the memory of our sons and daughters alive by working to help veterans. Bart and Connie Howard, whose son Abram was killed in action while serving as a Marine in Afghanistan, were the sparkplugs for the local monument. Connie first explained a little more background about the Gold Star Family concept. “First of all, obtaining a Gold Star is not the goal to have during any conflict,” Connie told Webb Weekly. “The Blue Star is hung in the window when any family member is serving in the military. When there is a ‘Killed in Action’ a Gold Star is hung in the window to denote that the serving family member is deceased. A Gold Star Family is the immediate member or members of a fallen service member who fell during a time of conflict.” She described how they learned of the concept of such a monument and, in turn, decided that it would be a good idea to do something like it locally. “My husband, Bart, and I were invited to Lovettsville, Virginia, to the unveiling on September 11 of this year by our

Grit November 10, 1918 Get Ready for Parade If Armistice is Signed Today Whistle Will Blow Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

I Bob Klein Sarah Crum Wreaths across amerIca

f the armistice is signed today, the big parade in celebration of the fact will take place strictly according to the program outlined in the general order issued by Marshal H.L. Laird and Chief of Staff Emerson Collins, printed below. Events have been moving quickly and turbulently and Germany has their own guess about whether the German government acquires a head such as he may deem responsible, in view of the abdication of the Kaiser. But everyone wait and listen and be prepared to turn out after the signal is given. For the purpose of participating in the proposed parade to celebrate the signing of the armistice by the Germans the people are asked to assemble in the streets being indicated upon the blowing of the fire whistles which will mean the

armistice has been signed. It will be the endeavor of organizers to have the parade move promptly on the hour following the blowing of the whistles. The right of the line will form at the intersection of East Third and Mulberry streets, north. The Imperial Teteques Band, militia colors., Reno Post and Rick Camp will post at this place. Division 1 will form on Mulberry Street, north of East Third Street and will be composed of women. For purposes of the parade Pennsylvania Railroad employees are asked to remain at their indicated places so that the parade may move. If in the daytime, all employees are asked to assemble at Trinity Place, near Fourth Street. Freight house and other employees are asked to assemble on Elmira Street. Everyone turn out and bring a flag with you.

County Hall Corner: State Award to JPO Chief Ed Robbins By Larry Stout

F

or almost 70 years, the Juvenile Court Judges’ Commission of Pennsylvania has been responsible for establishing standards that are used in the juvenile court system in the Commonwealth. They have been a flagship to the rest of the nation in this area. Besides setting parameters for best practices, they also seek to highlight those who perform exceptionally well. Not every year, but when an individual truly deserves recognition, the JCJC awards their highest award, the Chief Juvenile Probation Office Award. On Wednesday, November 4th, the chief ’s award was presented to the recently retired Lycoming County Juvenile Probation Chief Edward R. Robbins. Ed Robbins joins a who’s who in the history of Pennsylvania juvenile justice. Ironically, Ed did not plan on spending his entire career supervising young people who broke the law. After graduating from Muncy High School in 1982, he enrolled at Mansfield University to study Criminal Justice. Providence led him to do a senior year internship in 1986 at Lycoming County’s Juvenile Probation Department,

and he knew this was his calling. After graduation, he was hired to work at the department, and within ten years, Ed Robbins would rise through the ranks to become the head of the department. He served in that capacity for 24 years, finally retiring in July of this year. Few people know how difficult it is to work with troubled youth. There are hundreds of cases that the county is monitoring at any one time. Obviously, parents are the most important to integrate into the process. But, when the parents themselves also have issues they are dealing with, it is necessary to partner with other agencies. The Juvenile Probation Department may get involved with the county’s Children and Youth Services and even

COUNTY HALL volunteer agencies such as the Salvation Army or other local churches. More often than not, it is necessary to contract with professional services. And when there are special problems, such as violence or sex offenders, it is necessary to utilize a residential youth treatment center. Ed Robbins personally approved each and every program annually. In the past five years, I have witnessed many occasions when Ed would explain to the county commissioners at their weekly meetings about the intricate nuances that he had to navigate to ensure that this was the best possible program and the county would receive the best possible price. Ed was one of the very few that the commissioners did not request to go back and try again. They knew that when Ed Robbins presented a contract, it was as thoroughly researched and refined as it possibly could be. The key to Ed’s success was that for over three decades, he looked forward to going to work every day. For him, it was not just the administrative activity, but the opportunity to make a positive difference in hundreds of lives every year. It was going to high school graduations to witness those receiving diplomas that possibly never would have were it not for his efforts. It was

hearing about jobs and accomplishments of young men and women who recognized that their lives could have taken a steep downward trajectory had it not been for Ed and his team’s work. It was being stopped on the street and being told what a difference he made in someone’s life. It went way beyond a paycheck — and that is what the JCJC Award is all about. The best news is that Ed is not going to spend his retirement trying to lower his golf handicap, but rather is sharing his insights with a new generation of future crime fighters. Since 2002, he has been a part-time adjunct faculty member at the Lycoming College, and since his retirement, he is now teaching several courses there. In January, when the college will be more or less on normal footings, Ed will teach full-time in the Criminal Justice and Criminology Department. It speaks well of the leadership at Lycoming College that they recognize Ed Robbins as a diamond in their own backyard. This exceptional award from the Juvenile Court Judges’ Commission of Pennsylvania is proof positive of that fact. Congratulations to a superb public servant, Ed Robbins!

True Grit!

C

ongratulations go out to Kennedy Marsh who is the District IV A CrossCountry Champion from Montgomery High School. What a story this is. This is the first season Kennedy has completed. She suffered serious injuries the past two years that put her out of competition. Through much work with Coach Marilouise Mazzante, she transformed her body posture to relieve the undo

pressure on her ankles and feet. This transformation helped make the difference as she has been able to train and compete in an injury free environment. She was the only cross-country runner for Montgomery and trained with Mazzante over the last five months. Getting her into meets was a struggle because, due to COVID, many leagues would only accept their league schools. Kennedy was able to compete in

three regular season meets and the PHAC invitational prior to districts. While she won two of the regular meet races, it was the competition in the PHAC invitational that opened her eyes to the district competition. So, as the district race rolled around, goals were set. Kennedy, has a tremendous amount of “grit!” She has fought her way back from years of struggles and wanted this opportunity to “leave it all out there!” And, that she did. Her strategy was to “take it off the line” and then settle in.

Well, there was no settling it. She ran to the front and never looked back. She anticipated s o m e challenges at some point, but they didn’t come. She maintained a solid lead throughout and earned that District championship. A great reward for never giving up! Congratulations Kennedy Marsh!

rid of the woodstove immediately. Spent 7 days in the hospital. It’s no joke. Cutting and splitting wood literally made me sick. That’s for a whole other column sometime though. This year is the first with our furnace. That fireplace I told you about is what used to heat our whole home up until this month. Our home is a Cape Cod, so it worked beautifully! Kept our room nice and cool upstairs which I loved and toasty downstairs. Last night, as I sat in the living room, the furnace would kick on and off about every 20 minutes or so. Chris wanted to see how it worked since he literally just finished hooking up all the duct work last night. Listening to it kick on was a sound I haven’t heard in such a long time. I was like “Oh my word!! Babe, this brings back a memory I haven’t thought of in years!” I would stay with my Grammy (Margaret) Perry a lot growing up. I loved sleeping over at her house and spending the weekend with her and Pop (Dwain Perry). At nighttime I would get a bath and gram would always have me wait till the furnace kicked on. When she heard it, we would go upstairs, and she would draw me a hot bath and dump in all the old bath toys that my dad used to play with when he was little! The door stayed shut so that heat from the furnace kept me warm for when it turned off. I remember when I got out, she would even wrap a heated towel around me that she had heated in the dryer! My gram seriously spoiled me rotten. I remember she had a huge bottle of this perfume stuff that always sat by her sink. I swear it was like

a two-gallon jug. My dad still has it in his bathroom to this day! It had a big black ball for a top and I got a kick out of using that when I was out of the tub. Isn’t it funny how the smell of a fire or the sound of a furnace brings back memories?? I hadn’t thought about that in years. Still hearing it today, right now, kicking on and off. I can’t help but want to run to the tub when it turns on, and play with those old bath toys. I still have them ya know. Memories. Precious memories. Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls • 1 can crescent rolls • ½ cup pumpkin puree • 4 tbsp light brown sugar • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice ICING: • 3 ounces cream cheese softened • 1½ cups powdered sugar • 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 – 3 tbsp milk 3 tbsp will make it runnier, 1 tbsp will make it more like frosting Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease a 9” pie pan with cooking spray. Unroll crescent roll dough. Firmly press perforations to seal, making it one big sheet. Spread pumpkin evenly over the dough. Evenly sprinkle brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice over the pumpkin puree. Starting on the short side of the rectangle, roll the dough up into a log. Cut the roll into about 8-9 pieces and place into a baking dish. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, until turning lightly golden at the edges. Let it cool in pan for 10 minutes.

Local Strongman Takes Static Monsters PA ocal strongman, Adam Grimes, is at it again. On October 24th, Grimes competed at Static Monsters Pennsylvania Log Press and Deadlift Championships. This would be his first time competing in the Men’s Open division. The competition took place at VIP Training & Strength Sport in Newtown, PA. There was a total of three eventsa maximum weight overhead log press, a maximum weight axle bar deadlift, and a 75-pound front hammer hold for time. The contest began with the log press. This consisted of three attempts to clean (lift from the floor to shoulders) and press a 12inch diameter steel log. Grimes was hoping to lift a little more, he said, but did manage a successful lift of 285 pounds giving him a second place in the first event.

The second event of the competition was the deadlift, where competitors lifted a barbell from the floor to a standing position. However, this was not your typical deadlift as it was to be done with an axle bar nearly as thick as a soda can. Using an extrawide diameter bar made gripping and handling the weight extremely difficult and required extraordinarily strong hands. This was the event Grimes was really looking forward to, and rightfully so! He easily lifted 705 pounds giving him first place in that event. The last event of the day for competitors was the front hammer hold. The goal of this event was to hold a 75-pound hammer with both hands straight out in front for as long as possible. To make this even more difficult, the competitors had to make sure their forearms stayed in contact with a set horizontal bar for the entire duration of the hold. Though Grimes was confident

competition with several other great competitors. This first-place victory has also earned him an invitation to the US Strongman Nationals 2021 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which he plans to attend. When asked if he had a lot of support for his training and competitions, Adam Grimes II wanted to acknowledge his family and to especially thank his Dad for coaching him, his mother and wife for their continued support, and to God for making all of his success possible.

in the deadlift, he was definitely nervous to compete in the hammer hold, and it was the event he was dreading the most. This hammer hold was also critical as Grimes was tied for first place going into this final event. Through pure grit and determination, he was able to hold the weight for just over 60 seconds giving him another event win and the overall title. After all, was said and done, Grimes managed a narrow first-place victory. It was an extremely fierce

Outfits, Not Just Clothes‌

Style File: Androgynous

I

n the 1930s and 40s, stars like Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn bucked against conventional feminine style wearing suits and trousers. Some of the most famous images of these actresses showcase them in tuxedos, button-downs, and blazers. Technically, androgynous fashion refers to clothing and accessories designed to avoid creating distinction between masculine and feminine

characteristics. However, more often than not, androgynous style takes its cues from traditional menswear versus the other way around. As the post-War 1950s cinched waist look became standard, the androgyny of Dietrich and Hepburn began to wane. During the 1970s Diane Keaton inspired a renewed interested in androgynous dressing, most notably through her character Annie Hall.

Her borrowed-fromthe-boys aesthetic thrust androgynous fashion back into the mainstream where it continues to evolve and remain popular. Now brands design menswe ar-inspire d Bernadette Ulsamer pieces in female sizes and fits. Now-a-days, it is very easy to replicate Keaton’s iconic Annie Hall “suit of oversized khakis, white collared shirt, vest, and

tie combo, all from womenswear. Autumn is the perfect time to experiment with looks that evoke the androgynous outfits of Dietrich, Hepburn, and Keaton. A lot of formalleaning androgynous style relies on layering, and what better season to start layering than fall, eh? Start with a white (or blue, or pinstriped) oxford button-down shirt then tuck, or halftuck, into a pair of suiting pants, or dark corduroys. You can go with the classic vest or layer an argyle or varsity

sweater. Top off your ensemble with a plaid blazer, which is a fall staple. Finish the look with a bowler hat, loafers, and a necktie in place of a necklace. Now, some higher-end designers do make neckties for women, however your local thrift store will probably have an amazing array of ties. Or you can utilize a silk scarf in lieu of a necktie. Or loop a tie around your waist as an unexpected, and stylish,

alternative to a belt. Bowties are another neckwear that plays into this style. If you want to put a twist on your necktie, try a fancy knot, like an eldrege, trinity, or fishbone knot. Whether you decide to go tie, or no tie, keep jewelry minimal and go with a more masculine-feeling watch. Hats are another important accessory in androgynous style. Dietrich didn’t shy away from the formal aesthetic of a tuxedo and topped off her look with

bowler hats, fedoras, and straw hats. Nowadays, she’s rarely seen without a hat, the bigger the better, donning wide-brimmed hats, exaggerated top hats, and cowboy-inspired hats. For a 21st century spin on this approach to androgynous style, keep the suit but swap out other elements. Instead of a button-down and crewneck sweater combo, go with a graphic tee and zip up cardigan layered under your blazer. Instead of traditional trousers, play around with proportions, like high-waisted flared

legs jeans or jogger-style bottoms. Trade the fedora for a baseball hat and switch in sneakers instead of loafers. You can also opt for suiting in unexpected colors, like bright pink or purple. And you’re not limited to only menswear-inspired items, feel free to mix in more feminine pieces like a lacey blouse, or a belted skirt, with blazers and bowties. There are a lot of elements to creating an androgynous look. And androgynous fashion can lend itself to many interpretations, not just the

suiting inspirations and movie stars outlined here. The main take away is that, unlike wearing a dress, which is just one piece, an androgynous outfit denotes a certain sense of thoughtfulness to bringing potentially disparate garments together for a layered and textured look. There is a bit more nuance and intention with androgynous style and, just like the talented actresses who brought it to the forefront, the androgynous aesthetic conveys a certain sense of individuality.

a top hat. In more casual moments, she still donned a three-piece suit and tie, but capped things off with a knit beret. Hepburn wasn’t known for wearing hats, instead she played with soft, wavy hairstyles, popular during her heyday. In later years, she styled her hair into a messy bun that was functional, as well as having an air of slouchy chic, similar to her turtlenecks and sweaters wrapped around her shoulders. Keaton’s hat game had a ton of variety (and still does). Back in the 70s, she completed her looks with

he Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society will be hosting a workshop for children focusing on the colonial craft of soap-making on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at 2pm. Pre-registration is required and the workshop will be limited to twentyfive children. The workshop is free and open to the public. Talented artist Catheal Weiser will be conducting the workshop. As soap-making involves the use of lye, the children will not be making bars of soap, but Ms. Weiser will instruct them in the process of soap-making

during the colonial period. Each participating child will be given a bar of soap at the conclusion of the workshop. The workshop is recommended for children aged 8-12 years of age. Social distancing will be observed and the use of face masks are mandatory. The workshop is underwritten by a grant from the Free and Accepted Masons, Ivy Lodge 106. To register or for more information regarding our programming, please contact the museum at 570.326.3326. The museum is located at 858 West Fourth Street, Williamsport. Parking is behind the building or on the street.

UPMC Physical Therapist: Keep Your Bones Fit By Shari Berthold, DPT Physical Therapy, UPMC

O

steoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. As a result, bones become weak and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from sneezing or minor bumps. Osteoporosis is very common, affecting one out of every two women and one out of

every four men, and is often associated with age. Do I have osteoporosis? While there are often no symptoms until you break a bone, screenings and tests are available. There are certain factors that can put you at increased risk for the disease, including: • You have a parent that broke a hip after a minor fall. • You smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day.

• You frequently suffer diarrhea. • You have broken a bone after a minor bump or fall. • You have taken steroids for more than 3 months. • You drink alcohol heavily. • You have lost more than 3cm in height. • Your periods have stopped for 12 months or more. • You have a low body mass index (BMI). • You are a woman and over the age of 65. If you answered “yes” to any of the previous questions, you should talk to your doctor about being screened. Staying Fit with Osteoporosis

If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, it is important for you to learn how to move, function, and exercise to prevent injury and build bone. Here are some tips to help you move your body safely: Keep your spine in good alignment. You can practice finding good posture by standing against a wall. The back of the head, the shoulders, hips, and ankles should all be touching the wall. You can also take a picture from the side and evaluate your position. You may have to work on the flexibility in your joints to achieve proper alignment, particularly in your upper back. You also may have to work on strengthening postural muscles

A twisting force can break a weakened bone. Your shoulders, hips, knees, and feet should always be pointing in the same direction. Avoid pivoting and sports with high risk for twisting including tennis, golf, and basketball. Use caution when getting out of bed, getting up from the floor, and getting on/off equipment. The bones of the spine, called vertebrae, are weakened by osteoporosis and can crush/collapse when bent forward (called a compression fracture). Avoid bending forward to touch your toes or pick up objects from the floor. When bending or lifting, you can check if your spine is in a safe position by holding a rod or stick along your spine. If you can complete the exercise with your neck, upper back, and low back maintaining contact with the straight line, the exercise should be safe.

bone. Strength training can be done with body weight (squats, lunges, pushups, planks), free weights, resistance bands, or machines. Be sure to use good technique with the principles mentioned above. Weight-bearing exercise is also important and helps to build bone. This includes walking and using the elliptical and/or steppers. Biking and exercising in a swimming pool may be beneficial if joints are very painful, but these are not particularly effective at building bone.

Balance exercise helps to reduce the risk of falls and subsequent injury. An example would be walking an imaginary tightrope. Just like a tightrope walker in a circus, this exercise involves holding your arms straight out from your sides, parallel to the floor. With your arms out, walk in a straight line, pausing for one or two seconds each time you lift your back leg off the ground. Take between 15 and 20 steps this way. While walking, keep your head straight and look at a fixed spot in front of you to help maintain balance. Exercise, along with diet and medication, is a critical component of success-

The Roving Sportsman… Go Outside! By Jon Pries

W

e seem to be finding ourselves in some rather unusual times. Two overriding factors appear to be on everyone’s mind and it seems like there is little we can do about either factor. Most recently, the presidential election is a sham. As I write this, there is still no clear winner — now 3 days after the polls have closed. If that weren’t enough, we have all been dealing with the ramifications of the corona virus since spring. It appears hopeless regarding both the election results and the continued effects of the virus. But, the good news is that there is something each of us can do for some kind of relief from the stress and anxiety of both of these issues. First, the corona virus reared its ugly head in the beginning of spring and has been dominating the news and our lives ever since. It has given the news media something to focus on and throw at us what seems like 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It is a new virus — one that no one has seen or had to deal with before, yet it never slows down anyone from giving advice, sometimes conflicting advice and sometime downright baseless advice. One day it is suggested that we wear a mask, and then we are told they really don’t do any good, only to hear that there is now

a mandate to wear them. Just when the rate of infections and deaths appears to be subsiding, a spike occurs and there are predictions of another surge. Confusion, loss of hope and apathy rein. But, the good news is that there is something each of us can do for some kind of relief from the stress and anxiety that this pandemic causes. So, you made it through election night! Congratulations. While I normally avoid any kind of political back and forth in this column, I feel it is appropriate to touch on recent political events. For more than a half of a century, I have eagerly followed more than a dozen presidential elections, often staying up into the wee hours of the morning to hear the announcement of who won the contest. But this time it is different — massively different. For months we have been inundated by the constant barrage of news covering both political parties and their candidates. Now, we wait. The results are still being tallied as I write this, while the lawsuits are piling up and the innuendos are rampant. Five minutes of listening to today’s news of politics and corona virus is enough to make one’s head explode! Enough is enough! But, the good news is that there is something each of us can do for some kind of relief from the stress and anxiety that this election is producing. Without a doubt, I have desired outcomes

behind us. For now, there is something each of us can do for some kind of relief from the stress and anxiety of both of these issues — GO OUTSIDE! It is a simple solution. Simply go outside. Enjoy the bounties of Mother Nature. Take a walk, go for a hike or sit alongside a stream. There is no better place to take your mind off of any negative situation than to be outdoors, in the fresh mountain air. If you voted, there is nothing more you can do, so take a hike and refocus on what is important in your life. As to the virus, one of the best medicines is to be away from crowds and to be breathing fresh mountain air. There it is — the simple solution — Go Outside!

for every situation. I would love it if all the days were filled with sunshine and have the occasional rainbow that the much needed rain brings, that people could more often find the silver lining in negative situations and that all my candidates would win their elections by an overwhelming margin. But, I don’t believe that not getting those results means that my life is wasted in some way, the universe is unraveling, or life as we know it is about to end. We all know better. As to the election, all we can do is cast our vote, and I hope each and everyone reading this did just that. Regarding the corona virus, we each need to play it safe, follow the guidelines and, hopefully sooner than later, a vaccine will be found and we can put the pandemic

a tree in archery season when suddenly and quietly, a large great horned owl landed on a limb on the other side of the tree trunk where I was perched. I’m sure the owl had no idea I was there, and for a brief moment, I had a real close up staring encounter. I have also had the opportunity to be called out to someone’s barn where they spotted a barn owl up in the rafters but other than those few rare encounters getting a good, clear look at an owl is something that seldom happens. Owls are hardly considered rare, but when it gets right down to sighting one, it certainly seems to be rare.

Up river, Tom Gravish’s Jersey Shore Bulldogs earned their seventh spot in the past eight years in District Four’s AAAA bracket with a mercy-ruling 48-7 biting of Mifflinburg. The victory gave the Dawgs the shot at their third consecutive district crown when they hosted Shamokin last Friday. South Williamsport continued its string of nine consecutive playoff appearances and made the best of the opportunity defeating second-seeded Troy 35-18 in the Class AA semi-final. The victory gave the Mountaineers a season record of 5-1 in a year when their only preseason scrimmage and their first two regular-season games were canceled due to COVID concerns. Their reward for an uphill season of success? Why it was a trip to Southern Columbia for last Friday’s district title game where the three-time defending state champion Tigers have won 28 of the past 30 titles. That is about as normal as you can get. Oh yes, in the NBA, the team with the best regular-season record, the Los Angeles Lakers, won the championship. The two teams with the best records in MLB played in the World Series, with the Dodgers besting Tampa Bay. The team with the most money, the New York Yankees, wowed em’ during the regular season, then lost again in the playoffs, and in case you haven’t heard, the Nittany Lions were once again gobbled up by those Buckeyes from across the state line. Yep, a lot of “normal” sports stuff in this most abnormal year.

Day” is the real deal. On Halloween afternoon, the gridiron Indian tribe visited the upstream reservation of the Canton Warriors and did what they always do — capture yet another District Four Class A football championship — winning 21-16. This year’s triumph marked the third time in as many years that Muncy has beaten Canton on its home field. It also was the third time that Muncy had lost to Canton during the regular season before inflicting its revenge with the championship on the line. For these “normal-seeking” Indians it was the fourth time in the last five years they have gone on the road to defeat a higherseeded opponent for the championship and exacted revenge for a regular-season loss. That occasion came in another tribal tussle over the Sayre Redskins. Another COVID scare shook the teepees of the undefeated Montoursville Warriors just days before the District Four Class AAA semi-final showdown against rival Loyalsock. A positive COVID test on the Montoursville campus caused an announced shutdown of school and related activities, meaning Montoursville would have had to forfeit the game to the Lancers. Following a marathon school board meeting, the team was permitted to play and handily defeated their crossbridge rivals 57-28. The result maintained the outcome normalcy in the recent meetings between the two schools and catapulted Montoursville into another district title game against Danville last Saturday.

Sporting Matters with Spence…

Post-Election Thoughts

D

ude? This is insane. Where do we begin? 2020 simply needs to go away. The Presidential Election is another trending mess. You seriously can’t make any of this up sports fans. My head hurts. I am seeing a lot of people question every ballot in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania. Whether it be an in person, absentee or a mail-in — the entire voting realm of 2020 is

extremely complicated. Several are calling it fraud. Others simply don’t understand how the system works. Here is my take. The PA State Supreme Court decided to move the deadline for all mail-in votes from Election Day to November 6th. This is what’s causing the major gripes and concerns. We are seeing several states change. As long as these votes were postmarked by November 3rd, they

would count. There was a lot of blue and red tape on this issue. The Republican Party asked the Supreme Court to intervene. Oh no. The State instructed all counties to segregate ballots Jamie Spencer received after Election Day. Republicans said that some counties do not have the ability to separate ballots properly. Democrats pointed fingers too. The conspiracies then started. Cry me a

river. I have little to no say in what went down, but I am very concerned about what is going on. I see division everywhere. Even here in the 570. Not good kids. I don’t understand all of the hatred either. We need to find a better way. This is embarrassing. Look I am an INDEPENDENT. A tree-loving, transcendentalist, who votes for the very best candidate. I am not allowed to participate in most primaries and my third-party candidates never win. But I am not affiliated with anyone.
