A Season Saved, An Autumn to Remember

W

e have so very much to be thankful for here in the West Branch Valley. We must not allow politics, differing views, and opinions to divide us. This goes double for any virus. I don’t understand today’s social media world when people who have a difference of opinion allow it to create the rage and hatred of each other it does. It’s okay not to agree; that’s the beauty of democracy. Most importantly, we must all work together to protect everything we are so blessed with. This includes the freedom of the very concept to agree or disagree with one another. We all must work together in the name of good. The perfect example of what I am talking about is the fall sports season for Pennsylvania high school athletes. As so many of our everyday freedoms and activities were falling victim to an overzealous governor and the fear of a germ, Pennsylvanians needed a common cause to unite them. As I watched what unfolded, the only comparison I could come up with was that football in the Keystone state became the equivalent of the tea that ended up in Boston Harbor. The tradition of Friday night lights united Pennsylvanians no matter of political affiliation, race, religion, or differing

views on the COVID crisis. Individuals came together in support of a common goal and belief. Simply summarized as — let the kids play! A beautiful thing then happened with this movement of protest against the governor; all the other fall sports seasons that would have been lost came right on along with this effort. Just imagine the Susquehanna River flowing around the Harrisburg area with thousands of footballs, soccer balls, tennis balls, golf balls, and cross-country shoes. This representing a declaration of freedom for athletic competition to King Thomas Wolf. What made this happen was parents standing strong for their high school student athletics. Combined with unwavering effort, research, common sense, and leadership by Executive Director of the PIAA, Dr. Robert Lombardi, this then supported by the PIAA Board of Directors and most school districts. All working together to not allow the governor to overstep his boundaries. He was held to his words of allowing the PIAA, the districts in which they compete, and the schools to make the decision to play or not to play. Dr. Lombardi doubled down on the governor’s shenanigans when he tried to doublecross PIAA sports and went public that he believed no sports should be played until after January 1, 2021. This is something

Mr. Lombardi, the PIAA Board of Directors, and Governor Wolf should have discussed prior to his attempted play through the media. At the point in time when this happened, Governor Wolf and his posse were stepping all over many of Jim Pennsylvanians’ rights; I Webb, Jr. could not believe people had not come together in outrage. It’s hard to believe that it took high school sports to finally become the unified rallying cry. In the same breath, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised because athletics unite individuals from every walk of life. It molds them into teammates and those that support a team concept. It’s a unification of families, faculty, student body, and community. So, thank you to all my fellow Pennsylvanians who stood up for the fall sports season. Thank you to Dr. Lombardi for having the intestinal fortitude to make this happen. Thank you for enabling the cheerleaders to cheer, the band to play on, and the homecoming queen to be crowned. Most of all, thank you to our area’s coaches and athletes who did amazing things with this unprecedented fall sports season. A Webb Weekly gold-colored congratulations to South Side’s very own Olivia Dorner. The young lady became the first District IV tennis player to win a State Championship. A shoutout to her father,

John, as he has dedicated much of his life to the teaching and coaching of tennis. What an amazing accomplishment shared by the Dorner family. I must also throw in that John and I won a West Branch Conference Championship together while playing football for Coach Ken Robbins. A tip of my WebbWeeklylive.com hat with the American Flag on the side to our district football champions! At the single A level, Coach Sean Tetreault and his Muncy Indians. What a great program the young coach has built. His tribe of Indians has won four district titles in five years. At the 4A level, Coach Tom Gravish’s Jersey Shore Bulldogs again brought home district gold. At press time, this undefeated team was preparing to take on Crestwood in the State Tournament. During Coach Gravish’s tenure, the Bulldogs have simply gone from mediocrity to #1 in the state of Pennsylvania. Jersey Shore is currently the top-ranked team at the 4A level in PA. In the past nine seasons, Jersey Shore has won five district titles and played in the district final every year but one. Did I mention he turned a program around that underachieved for decades, and during his first season, they didn’t win a game? What an unbelievably great job Coach Gravish, and his staff have done in building a Dawg Dynasty. Hopefully, in the very near future, they make our cover like South’s Olivia Dorner did with State Championship gold! God Bless America.

e have a bit of time before Thanksgiving, but in case you’ve been charged with bringing something to your Thanksgiving dinner and have no idea what that is going to be, I’m coming at you with some possibilities! You know I’m always here looking out for you! First up we have a play on the Thanksgiving staple of green bean casserole, but ya know, with potatoes. And honestly, I think we could all use more potatoes in our lives. Green Bean Casserole Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients: • 1 teaspoon salt • 12 oz fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup • 1/2 cup milk • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1 cup French’s® crispy fried onions • 1 pouch (4.7 oz each) Betty Crocker™ creamy butter mashed potatoes • Water, milk and butter called for on potatoes pouch • 2 oz (from 8-oz package) cream cheese, softened Directions: Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 8-inch square (2-quart) baking dish with cooking spray. In 4-quart saucepan, heat 2 quarts water and 1 teaspoon salt to boiling. Add green beans; cook 4 to 6 minutes or until crisptender; drain, and return to saucepan.

Add soup, milk, pepper and 1/2 cup of the fried onions to saucepan; stir. Pour into baking dish. Make mashed potatoes as directed on pouch. Steph Stir cream cheese into Nordstrom mashed potatoes. Spread potatoes evenly over green bean mixture in baking dish. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until hot and bubbling around edges. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup fried onions. Bake 5 to 10 minutes or until onions are golden brown. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. And since little in the world makes me happier than the combination of bacon, cheese and carbs, I bring you… Cheddar-Bacon Popovers Ingredients: • 2 slices bacon, chopped • 3 eggs • 1 cup milk • 1 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves • 1/4 cup finely shredded sharp Cheddar cheese (1 oz) Directions: Heat oven to 400°F. In 8-inch nonstick skillet, cook bacon 5 to 7 minutes over

medium heat until crisp. Transfer to bowl using slotted spoon. Reserve 1 tablespoon bacon drippings for greasing muffin cups. Meanwhile, in large bowl, beat eggs with whisk. Beat in milk. Beat in flour and salt until smooth. Stir in thyme. Generously grease 12 regular-size muffin cups with reserved bacon drippings. Place muffin pan in oven 5 minutes. Carefully remove pan from oven. Divide batter evenly among muffin cups. Sprinkle bacon evenly over batter in muffin cups. Bake 27 to 30 minutes or until deep golden brown. Prick top of each popover once with sharp paring knife to prevent deflation. Sprinkle cheese evenly over popovers. Let stand 3 to 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Normally, I take offense to people who insist on starting Christmas before we even finish with Thanksgiving, but I’m changing my tune this year. I think we can all admit it’s been a heckin’ weird year, so I’m taking a ‘you-do-you’ attitude. You want to put your Christmas tree up in the middle of November? Do it! You want to start blasting Mariah Carey at 6:00 a.m. — go for it! Hallmark Christmas movie marathon on a Tuesday afternoon with a glass of wine? Absolutely! We all need to do whatever we can to bring a little joy and fun to our lives! Have fun, and enjoy all that the holiday season has to offer! And speaking of…don’t forget that our Holiday Gift Guide comes out next week. We will have a ton of great gift ideas to help you get your shopping started!

Third Time’s a Charm for Olivia Dorner By Scott N. Lowery

kin to the fabled tortoise’s calculated race to the finish line ahead of the hare, South Williamsport High School’s junior tennis sensation Olivia Dorner’s assent to the top of the PIAA tennis world took longer than she had hoped: but it cannot be disputed, her unchallenged skill left both opponents and spectators in appreciative awe. Dorner’s third visit to the PIAA state championships proved to be the charm as she became the first District 4 player to win gold after defeating Villa Maria Academy’s Tara Thomas, 6-0, 6-1, in the Class AA final earlier this month. The victory came a few hours after she vanquished Knoch’s Laura Grab 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. The previous two seasons Dorner had also reached Hershey, finishing third as a freshman and taking second place as a sophomore. “I am really happy how everything turned out and thankful for everyone who has helped me get to where I am; the Tennis Center, my parents, everyone that I hit with and my coaches,” Dorner said. “I am really happy with how I played and how everything went.

THOMAS KINKADE CHRISTMAS™ LIONCHIEF SET WITH BLUETOOTH®

“It has definitely been difficult. The first two years, there were some unfortunate events, but I was able to refocus and continue to go after my goal, which was state champion, and keep practicing to get better and move forward.” Her crowning accomplishment comes after three dominating regular season performances on the Mountaineers’ tennis team. During her young career she has never lost to a District Four opponent, won three consecutive District titles while compiling an astounding 61-2 personal record; the two losses coming in her previous two state championship appearances. Olivia’s climb to the top of the tennis mountain is much more than an overnight hike. Tennis is a family staple in her home. Her father, John Dorner, is a United States tennis certified professional at the Central PA Tennis Center as well as Williamsport High School girls’ tennis coach in the fall. He was a college standout at Juniata College. He has been the driving force in his daughter’s tennis development. As Olivia describes it, “I played when I was younger, but I was always doing other sports and really didn’t begin to focus on tennis until about 12 or 13. It

ability that is phenomenal.” Describing her style of play as “pretty aggressive” Dorner’s focus is to always hit her targets and spots. “When I am drilling with my Dad I focus a lot on moving my shots around with the objective of forcing my opponent to constantly move all around the court. That style of play opens up the court and gives me more opportunities to place the ball where I’d like.” With all due respect to her regular season opponents, Olivia’s aggressive style of play is rarely challenged. “The regular season matches are tough because there are girls I’m playing that just want to get a point. I feel bad because I don’t want that. So sometimes it is tough to keep the proper focus and mentality as if it were a bigger tournament.” “One of Olivia’s strengths is her ability to keep her emotions in check,” Summerson added. “During the regular season she has dominated her matches, but when she suffered those two losses in state play the past two years she maintained an even keel. To me that was really special, to play the match and control her emotions.” With one more year of high school tennis ahead of her, Dorner’s goal is the same as it has been, “hopefully, to do the same thing I’ve been doing.

was then that I decided this was what I wanted to do and play the game full time.” Since then, Olivia has maintained a daily regimen. “Each day, I’ll get up and eat breakfast and then go play for an hour and a half or two hours. Then, after I take care of school work, I’ll again work out for a couple hours. There aren’t that many people around here to hit with, but I try and play as much as possible. I pretty much hit twice a day, either with my Dad or some local guys around here, just practicing a lot. It is important to stay focused and keep the same mentality.” “People can watch Olivia play tennis and see how good she is,” reasoned South Williamsport High School coach Theresa Summerson. “But what they don’t see is how deeply committed she is to what she is doing. Watching her not quite make it at Hershey the last two years, never once did she waiver. She just took on the attitude, tomorrow I start training again and that is exactly what she did. The results are evident now. “It has been a great pleasure and privilege haaving her on our team. Tennis has been her passion for life and passion is something you can’t coach. She has a really neat combination of a passion for the game and athletic

I need to keep practicing, keep the same mindset, and shoot to repeat the same result next year.” “After high school I will be trying to get into a good college where I will be able to play on the tennis team and continue to grow with my game.” In addition to her greatness, Summerson explained Olivia has had a positive influence on tennis in South Williamsport. “We’ve had several good years in tennis and that is just from girls who are dedicated and happen to be living here, which has been great for me. But it has stirred up some interest from the great things she is achieving. The last few years there has been a greater dedication to practice and off-season stuff from among the girls coming out for the team.” As for that championship Saturday in Hershey, Dorner’s approach was matter-of-fact. “On the morning of the championship match I got up at 6:30 a.m., got myself ready and went to eat breakfast. It wasn’t anything glamorous. I ate some cereal, oatmeal and whatever they had and then went over to the club and got ready for the match.” Two quick, workmanlike matches later, the championship gold was

relocating to South Williamsport and District Four for the first time ever. Asked what she liked to do for fun, tennis was at the forefront. “I love traveling. When I go to the various tournaments I love seeing new cities and exploring the areas. That is a great benefit of going to the tournaments. It is the best of both worlds. You get to play and also get to see other places and I love that. “Tennis is a great lifetime sport. You can play it all through your life. Sometimes when people begin to play the sport it may be frustrating or difficult. But I would encourage people who might want to try the game to stick with it, keep playing and you’ll get better.” “Olivia has provided me many special moments, but obviously her state champion win is right at the top of the list,” Summerson concluded.” It was great she could do that with her family watching, especially her Dad. John has essentially trained her since she was a small child. Being able to see her share that moment with her Dad was really special.” Over the years District Four athletes have accomplished some remarkable feats. Olivia Dorner has now engraved her name on that very special list.

I lift my lamp beside the golden door! That golden door was forged by the brighter side of capitalism – but the darker side has sometimes prevailed. All sociopolitical systems are designed with good intent, but they drift toward extremism because they are managed by fallen human beings. Power and greed always lead toward dark extremes, and when they do, humanity suffers immense pain and injustice. I’ve said all of that to say this: thank God for the balance of power in the United States. The founders of our nation, having just broken free of extreme tyranny, understood the problem, so they designed restraint and balance into the American experiment by providing three branches of government. The Legislative branch, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives, make the laws. The Executive branch, consisting of the President, Vice-President and the Cabinet, carry out the laws. The Judicial branch, consisting of the Supreme Court and the Federal Court System, interpret the laws. Each branch of government provides restraint and balance to the others. Elections also provide balance. Regardless if it is a run for Williamsport City Council or President of the United States, every election can lead us back toward balance. Is it a messy process? You bet it is! But as we subtly shift back and forth between the extremes, we quite often strike the

balance that is so crucial for the American experiment to succeed and for humans to breath the rarified air of freedom. Let not your heart be troubled, the United States will survive the next four years. The balance of power and an impassioned electorate will protect us from extremism. Remember, if you don’t like the results of this election, your vote can turn it the other way in November 2022. This is why your vote, and the integrity of our voting process, is so essential. America will also survive because the vast majority of Americans are not extremists. Elections focus on extreme positions and predictions, but the people who live in our beautiful community are not extreme. Red or blue, our fellow citizens are compassionate and hardworking people who love their families and want what’s best for our nation and our neighborhoods. Are there extremists among us? Most certainly, but they are vastly outnumbered by the rest of us. Don’t let their dark rhetoric cause you to look at your neighbors with suspicion. Let’s overcome the extremists by heading Paul’s closing comment in Romans 12, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” My friends, no election result is worthy of ongoing division and bitterness. Life is too short, and our holy potential is too grand. We have big things to do and a holy mission to accomplish, so let’s get on with it.

Non-linear Periodization for Youth Strength and Conditioning

T

Bob Klein Sarah Crum

The other end of the spectrum would be his article is intended for the rigid, long-term, linear periodized coaches, athletes, fitness programs and straight block programs. enthusiasts, or anyone Simply put, these programs manipulate interested in exercise science. intensity and volume in an inverse Anyone that has been involved in fashion. When weights go up, the overall strength and conditioning for any length volume is reduced. Right now, I’m of time has probably used and written raising my hand to freely admit these many different programs. Regardless of were what I used to design my early said programs’ intentions, most people, myself included, have most likely been Dave powerlifting programs. I sometimes Bellomo had my poundages calculated a year in designing their programs incorrectly. advance. I could almost never follow I have often been asked to write a program for someone, only to find out that they these programs for any length of time, as I simply expected a list of exercises, possibly with often overtrained, and I never accounted for set and repetition schemes. “Just something any of life’s little bumps such as illness, injury, for toning,” I was recently told. I thought or my girlfriends dumping me. The other big programming could be simple to implement, problem with this type of program is that as but knowledge and experience are required to you tapered your training, you would lose some properly design. Most programs that coaches of the great attributes you developed along the and enthusiasts design are made to last no more way. For example, you would lose much of the than a single week and the lengthy ones are so muscle mass you gained at the beginning of the rigid that if you missed a day, the entire universe program, and any kind of endurance you built would be gone as well. I can remember thinking would collapse. First, let’s discuss a few basic program design my squat is awesome if I could only walk up a methods and where they go wrong, then flight of stairs without having a coronary. There we’ll get into a better way. On one end of the is, however, another option that combines the spectrum is a completely random approach. best of both variety and planning: Non-linear, Some people call this muscle confusion. I’m or Undulating, Periodization. Over the years, Non-linear Periodization not talking about variety but random programs that usually end in someone getting hurt. Many has worked extremely well for my clients, my professional trainers are guilty of this. Anyone athletes, and myself. This type of programming can design a program that is really hard, but is simply a way of building in systematic change. what matters is whether or not it produces I can honestly say I have made great gains since results. Variety definitely needs to be included, I have changed to this method of program but systematically. See YOUTH on Page 18

design. In addition, I have not had any major injuries, nor have I exhibited the symptoms of overtraining. Another big plus is that the variety makes this type of training quite fun. It works well for anyone as long as it is properly employed and takes a bit of thought in the long-term. Imagine that achieving the training outcomes you seek is like putting coins in a jar. With traditional training methods, assuming that you stay injury-free and life doesn’t throw you any curveballs (Big if!), you fill up your jar rather quickly. If you are designing a strength and conditioning program for young athletes, you will notice that they make great gains at first then hit a major plateau soon after. Aside from microscopic gains thereafter, they will have gotten pretty much all of that particular attribute out of their bodies. Some might argue that the coach should just switch gears and train for something else or just switch around some exercises. That sounds a lot like the block periodization programs we already decided were more likely to lead to injury and/or overtraining. In addition, how will your athletes hold on to the gains they made if you really change things around? Now, imagine you have three separate jars. Every training session, you throw a coin into a different jar. True, it will take you longer to fill your jars, but eventually, you will. Now you have three full jars or three nearly maximized training outcomes. For most young athletes who are not involved in pure sports such as sprinting, marathons, or powerlifting, training for multiple attributes will develop a more well-rounded arsenal of strength, power, and endurance. To design a long-term, multi-outcome program, you will need to include specific goals, flexibility

in programming, variety, and keep it really simple. Goal setting Keep the end in mind. What I mean by that is that you will need to have more than your immediate goal clearly defined. You will want to know where the entire program is heading. Not just next week or next month, but the endgame. Where do you want to ultimately be? For those of you that are designing for a team sport, a bit more knowledge is required. For example, soccer demands intermittent bursts of power and speed over a long period of time. In addition, strikers need to be able to move around constantly where defenders may get more breaks but need to display the strength to collide with an opposing player on demand. As a coach, you will likely need to pick two or three long-term attributes, which you desire to obtain. Are you after maximum strength in a particular lift, basic overall performance strength like that of a grappler, muscular endurance, mass, etc.? Flexibility The second condition for designing a long-term program is flexibility. I can’t tell you how many times I was forced to take a day off from training only to have it royally screw up my schedule; if you miss a day with this program, you just pick up where you left off. Barring serious injury or illness, strive to get in three or four training sessions per week, but don’t be afraid if your athletes miss a day when they need to take off for injury or illness. Athletes need to listen to their bodies and allow optimal stress recovery so that they can make optimal gains in all areas. Variety Third, as a coach, you will want to build in

variety. If you are planning for multiple attributes, such as the speed, power, and endurance, then variety is really very simple. Each training session should have a theme. Assuming these outcomes are not in conflict, they should be relatively similar. For example, when simultaneously training for strength and power, you might use similar lifts such as kettlebell or barbell snatches and cleans. Strength day might involve heavy three repetition maximum (3RM) lifts. Power day might utilize many low repetition sets of light-moderate weight. If you needed to add muscular endurance or high-intensity interval training (HIIT), just set aside a training day for that. (I recommend, however, never training for more than three attributes at any one time.)

Simplicity Fourth, keep it simple. If you start with the basic premise that your body will respond specifically to what you do to it, then it is really very easy to train for a specific training outcome or multiple outcomes. Start with the basics. If you want to be strong to lift heavy objects, then build in heavy work. If you want to be able to move explosively again and again, then build in power-endurance work such as high repetition kettlebell snatches. If you desire to be able to maintain a near maximal heart rate for an extended period, make sure you include high-intensity interval training (HIIT). The best programs are simple. Over the years, I have come to believe that the surest way to screw up a good strength and conditioning program

is to overcomplicate it. When performed with enough intensity, volume, variety, and proper recovery, simple programs will produce the best results. The more complicated you make it, the more likely something will go wrong. Long-term Last, think about the big picture. It’s easy to get caught up in the latest craze or to try a program because some jacked guy uses it. Follow the few basic training design programs listed in this article, find out what works for your athletes, and stay the course. Sure, you’ll want to mix things up once in a while (I recommend changing out some of the auxiliary exercises every few weeks), but the foundational program should stay the same as long as your goals haven’t changed. Just to recap. Define your goal or goals. Be flexible in having your athletes take days off and teach them to listen to their bodies. Build

in variety. Keep it simple. Last, think longterm. Sure, mixed training programs produce mixed results, but isn’t that a good thing? Very few sports are pure except in cases such as powerlifting or marathons. Most things demand a variety of attributes that are necessary yearround, at a moment’s notice, and require the athlete to maintain great overall strength and fitness. By making frequent, but systematic changes in your training variables, your athletes can not only make great long-term gains but will also be less likely to overtrain and get injured. They will also be able to tap into different types of strength, all while maintaining great stamina and endurance. If you are interested in more information about this article’s contents or would like to discuss training programs, feel free to contact me at dave.bellomo@gmail.com.

T

his week, as I wrapped up my 2020 harvest season, I was one more step ahead than last year. Let me explain. I spent the second to last Saturday in October making a big ol’ stock pot of homemade chicken noodle soup. Not just for those busy nights, but for the flu and cold season. I don’t know about you, but when I am sick, there is nothing like chicken noodle soup to help ease that feeling of just feeling plain old crappy. My momma and I just finished our applesauce this week, which was the final thing on my 2020 harvest list. I have everything

“Homemade chicken noodle soup that has been simmering on the stove since this morning.” I said. He was all excited, and you could see he thought it was for lunch. “Babe, I made this for in our freezer for when we are sick.” I got this dead stare from him. “Seriously. You aren’t going to let me have any!? Especially with grilled cheese. That would be so good together!” Like I said, it was a stock pot, and I had plenty, but when you start dishing that out to save for a later date, it goes quickly! I wanted to prepare. “Yes Christopher. We can each have a bowl with lunch, I suppose,” I replied.

from jellies, corn, tomatoes, mirepoix, and applesauce in our freezer, to lots of canned items like different salsas, fruits, tomato sauce, and peppers. But last year, when I got really sick in November, there were no soups! I prepared, but not for that. I had meals for my family in the freezer (now THAT, I’m prepared for) but not for me to get sick the way I was. I was so sick that I literally passed out in the shower and my husband came running in knowing something was seriously wrong. I remember that week craving homemade chicken noodle soup. I had small containers of my homemade

applesauce ready for if my kids got sick and wanted some of momma’s applesauce to ease their little tummies. I still did a few little containers this year for that too! They look so nice sitting next to my frozen containers of homemade chicken noodle soup. That Saturday Andrea when I was making it, I McElroy happened to make grilled cheese for my family for lunch. My husband said he could smell whatever I was cooking clear outside walking in from our garage. As he came in to wash his hands he said, “Whatcha cooking babe? Smells amazing!”

HOME COOKIN His next response cracked me up. My husband knows whatever I make he can have. Plus, he is always my taste tester! I gave him a spoon and he tried it leaning over the sink while blowing off that hot steam. It had been simmering for hours and was scalding hot! “Oh man babe, it’s delicious! I can’t wait to be fake sick next week so I can have more,” he said. I cracked up! What a response. God bless him. I mean, he is so deprived of good food around here, haha. Needless to say, we each enjoyed a hot bowl with our grilled cheese sandwiches, and some of us are looking forward to an excuse to bust out those frozen containers of this soup. (And tiny applesauces!) I don’t wish to have the flu, but a day in bed with the sniffles could do. Wrapping my hands around a steamy bowl of this can make any sniffles better!

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup Ingredients: • 2lbs of chicken breast, seasoned • 4 cups chicken broth • 4 Tbsp butter • Chicken bouillon cube • Mirepoix - mixture of diced carrots, celery and onion to your liking —*About 2/3 cup of each* • Salt and Pepper to taste • Water (2-3 cups) • Package of Walnut Creek Noodles or Egg Noodles Bake chicken for 45 minutes at 350, then

cut the chicken in cubes or shred. Save broth in the pan and all that extra goodness! We are going to be scraping all that into the soup. Melt the butter in a large pan and add all the chopped veggies. Let cook till softened, about 3-5 minutes. Slowly add the broth and chicken. Now’s the time to dump all those goodies from the baked chicken into the pot! Let simmer on the stove as long as you like. After simmering, add water with a bouillon cube. Add pasta and cook until softened. Season with salt and pepper. Soup will be ready to serve. If freezing, make sure soup is cooled before placing in the freezer.

t has been a rough year for many annual events in the area because of mean old Mr. COVID-19, but one event is going to carry on despite the challenges posed by the virus at this time, and that is the 14th Annual Skip Hunsinger Children’s Christmas Spectacular to be held on Saturday, December 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport. The event is put on by the Volunteer Corps of Ushers and the staff of the Community Arts Center. Organizers of the event have had to make a lot of adjustments and modifications to the event in order to make it a safe event from the possible ravages of COVID-19. This year it will be conducted in an innovative and clever way as a drivethrough event by vehicle-only experience. At 10 a.m. on December 5, cars can start lining up on West Fourth Street in front of the Community Arts Center building to get a goodie bag for their kid(s) and enjoy a few socially distanced Christmas festivities, including a visit from the big, jolly man himself, Santa Claus! The Volunteer Corps will be joined by musical guests, Repasz Brass, Repasz Winds, and Autumn Breeze Sax Quartet, who will be playing some of your favorite holiday classics.

“I am honored to help the Community Arts Center carry on what my Dad started 14 years ago,” Bryan Hunsinger, eldest son of Skip Hunsinger, told Webb Weekly. “He was a kid at heart, and enjoyed seeing the sparkle in the eyes of the kids as they left the event. Being able to continue this tradition during the pandemic is especially important as the kids need a little fun and excitement, and I believe that we will be able to pull that off!!” The Children’s Christmas Spectacular began in 2007 when my uncle, Harold “Skip” Hunsinger and Frank “Whitey” Missigman proposed that the CAC’s volunteers sponsor an annual event called the “Children’s Christmas Spectacular,” which was a revival of the Christmas parties sponsored by the local AFLCIO held at the then Capitol Theater from the late 1930s until the early 1960s. These events usually included a movie, candy, and a small toy for each child — something that was welcome to children, particularly during the Depression years. Skip and a dedicated committee made up of CAC volunteers, did all the leg work to make this event possible and as successful as it has been. here’s no way out. Face it: you can’t escape. There’s no sneaking off here, no graceful exits, no big cartoon stage-hooks for you. You can’t wiggle past anybody, and just walking off into the sunset is a no-go. Nope, you’re stuck. You can’t get away now; as in the new novel “Anxious People” by Fredrik Backman, there are too many eyes watching. Ten years ago, a man was at his wits’ end. He had foolishly borrowed money, hoping to make more but the economy tanked and he had nowhere to go but to a bridge. Standing at the top of the span, he thought he was alone but a teenage boy was there, too, and he tried to talk the man into stepping back. Alas, the man stepped forward into the void and the boy never forgot. Years later, that boy became a man who became a police officer like his father. Unlike his father, he had no patience, so

when a call came in that a bank robbery had taken place in their nondescript little town, the young officer thought it might be his chance to show his boss’s boss’s boss that he was a good cop. But this robbery was like no other: the bank was a cashless bank. Realizing that this must be the Dumbest Heist in History, the robber panicked and ran to the building next door. From there, he could only go up, and into an apartment where there happened to be an open house. Now totally unnerved, he waved his gun, which probably wasn’t real anyhow, and this robberynot-robbery instantly became a hostage situation. But after demanding pizza, the robber let everyone go and then he disappeared. Poof. There’d been nine people in the apartment that afternoon. Eight were questioned (and not very successfully). There was a rabbit there, too, and a trunk full of wine and a freezer full of food. And a lie that somebody got away with... You know what it’s like to be minding your own business on a bench somewhere, and you’re joined by a dotty eccentric who suddenly starts talking gossip about people you don’t know? It’s scattered, and it makes no sense; it’s odd, and yet

amusing enough that, despite yourself, you become interested in hearing more. That’s initially what “Anxious People” is: vague, like you should want to continue but it’s an uneasy 50/50 now, and author Fredrik Backman makes you laugh but it’s a not-quite-committed laugh, and you wonder how you’ll make it to the end of this book. Trust: you’ll make it to the end of this book. Turns out, the scatter is the point. It’s a bunch of oops-forgot-to-tell-you’s that hold this tale together, along with distractions, adorableness, romance, and mystery-like MacGuffins that demand

y wife, three children, and I happened to be in Moscow in August of 1991 when the independence movement began, which resulted in the fall of the USSR. We had waited in line for two hours to get into the one and only McDonalds Restaurant in Russia and were enjoying our American cuisine of Big Macs and Coca-Cola when my teenage son David looked out the window and remarked, “Hey Dad, a tank just went down Gorki Street.” I replied, “David, this is Russia. There is nothing unusual about a tank in the street.” But he retorted, “But Dad, there were civilians riding on the tank!” Now, that was unusual. We grabbed our food and ran out to see what was happening. We were not the only ones, as we followed the tanks several blocks from Puskin Square to Red Square where thousands of people had assembled. There was a makeshift podium set up with a portable PA system. A rather passionate man was speaking very enthusiastically about something that we couldn’t quite figure out but were pretty sure was not in support of the present government. All this was quite interesting, and I realized we were in the midst of something historic — but that could also turn into something horrific. I did not want my family to

get caught in a Tiananmen Square type event (the Chinese government’s brutal slaughter of protestors in Beijing in 1989) and decided that discretion was the better part of valor and went to distance us from this demonstration as soon as possible. We went about two or three blocks to a popular tourist area on Arbat Street and found it was as busy as ever. We saw the same normal activities as we walked around the city to kill time before our departure on the train that would take us back to Riga, Latvia, where we were living. It was on time, and there was no panic of folks getting on the train. Had we not been to Red Square, we would never have known there was anything unusual going on. Our friends and family back in the States had been following what was happening in

COUNTY HALL Moscow on television and actually knew a lot more about the situation than we did. But it was their impression from the news that the country was in total upheaval. We reassured our loved ones that though there was lots of confusion during this change in government, life was still going on. These thoughts went through my mind while attending the Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, November 10th. To follow the national media, the only thing going on in America is the disputed national election. Yet, this subject was not even mentioned as the commissioners went through a long and challenging agenda that dealt with significant property assessment issues, replacing county employees, and evaluating and approving of various contracts and expenditures needed for a wide variety of areas. Even the mention of a payment of $54,182.00 for the purchase of central scanners needed for the Voter Services Office (which was covered by a state grant, not out of county funds) did not get one peep of comment from the commissioners about the election itself. The point is, that while we certainly should be concerned about who will be living in the White House, it is more important to think about living in our own house. Times are really hard. American Rescue Workers had been serving 750 meals a month in the early part of the year; it is now serving upwards

of 1,200 per week. County government is also working extremely hard to help businesses that have been especially hurt by the shutdowns. Shannon Rossman, director of the Planning Department, noted that her staff was processing 168 awards for relief funds for local establishments. The urgency was highlighted by an example of notifying a company they were receiving a grant, only to discover they had been forced to close their doors the day before. Mya Toon, the county’s chief procurement officer, announced a new way for vendors to bid on county sale items. Previously, vendors and buyers needed to go through Mya, which was an awkward and limiting process. This has now been changed by the PennBid Program, which was described by Commissioner Mirabito as an eBay for government items. It will offer more folks the opportunity to bid on excess county items and more funds for the county. Yes, the mess of the recent election will be felt for some time, but in a strange sort of way, it was quite refreshing to attend a one-hour county commissioner meeting that covered a wide variety of important areas, which in many ways is no different than several hundred other such meetings I have attended in these past few years. It reminded me that even in the midst of a historic disputed presidential election, life is still going on pretty much as usual in Lycoming County.

Take the Fear Out of Trying Unfamiliar Produce

I

ntroducing kids to unfamiliar flavors doesn’t have to be a frightful experience. Getting creative and taking cues from some beloved characters may be all it takes for families to explore produce in a new way and discover how delicious, satisfying and enjoyable fresh fruits and vegetables can be. A passion for produce may begin with America’s favorites, like bananas, apples, citrus, celery, carrots and broccoli, but that’s just the beginning. Whether it’s their angry names and tough exteriors, or simply a fear of the unknown about taste and preparation, dozens more

diverse and exotic fruits and vegetables like dragon fruit, horned melon and Brussels sprouts are often the sources of produce paranoia. An initiative from Dole, in collaboration with Disney and Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., is helping to take the scare out of specialty fruits and vegetables and widen America’s produce horizons. That’s because, like a good book or the characters in a beloved film, you can’t judge a fruit or vegetable by its appearance; nature’s true beauty often lies within. The campaign offers character-inspired recipes, serving suggestions, digital

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE WAY YOUR LEGS LOOK, BUT HOW THEY FEEL

Do you have restless legs? Do your legs feel tired, achy and ‘heavy’ by the end of the day? Do you get swelling, itching or tingling of the legs as the day goes on? Do you have varicose or spider veins? All of these symptoms can be caused by venous insufficiency.

and social activations, family-friendly activities, fun trivia and influencer partnerships that celebrate the not-soscary world of the planet’s more unusual fresh bounty. One easy way to introduce new flavors is by trying a variation of a familiar fruit or veggie. For example, there are more than 500 edible banana varieties in the world. You might sample a red banana or a Manzano, or even an ice cream banana, with a taste resembling vanilla custard. These fun and kid-friendly Green Slime Nacho Cups feature plantains, for example, a member of the banana family with a different taste and texture than everyday yellow bananas — more firm and starchy like a potato. Increase your family’s produce intake even further with a Slippery Slimy Smoothie, which calls for green grapes, spinach, banana and pineapple. Green Slime Nacho Cups Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients: • 1 green starting to turn yellow DOLE(r) Plantain, peeled and thinly sliced on bias • 1 1/2 teaspoons canola oil • 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided • 1 Dole Avocado, halved, pitted and peeled • 1 tablespoon lime juice • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1/2cup thinly shredded Dole Purple Cabbage Directions: Preheat oven to 375 F. Toss plantain slices

with canola oil and season with pinch of salt. On parchment paper-lined baking sheet, arrange slices in single layer with no overlapping. Bake 18-20 minutes, or until crispy and lightly golden. Cool completely and set aside. Using spoon, scoop flesh of avocado into small bowl and mash, reserving one half avocado shell. Stir mashed avocado with lime juice, garlic and remaining salt. Stir in slaw, reserving some for garnish. Scoop into reserved avocado shell and smooth top with back of spoon. Stick reserved cabbage shreds out of avocado mixture to look like hair. Serve slime nacho cups with plantain chips. Slippery Slimy Smoothie Prep time: 10 minutes Servings: 2 (8 ounces each) Ingredients: • 1/2 cup DOLE® Spinach • 1 Dole Banana, peeled and frozen • 1/2cup Dole Green Grapes, frozen • 1/3 cup cucumber, diced • 1/2 cup Dole Pineapple • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk • 1/2 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt • 5 ice cubes Directions: In blender, blend spinach, banana, grapes, cucumber, pineapple, almond milk, Greek yogurt and ice cubes until smooth. Pour smoothie into two glasses and serve. (Family Features & Dole)

t is not something that a mother plans, nor is it something that one wishes for. Nothing can prepare a mother for an early birth. 33,000 babies will be born premature this month. That is 1 in every 10 babies. Every 12 hours a mother dies due to pregnancy complications. Additionally, two babies die each day. In 2020, the United States is one of the most dangerous developed nations in which to birth a child. Access to equal and quality maternity health care services is limited or lacking all over the country. Health, socio-economic and geographical factors all contribute to this crisis. Due to these factors, more than 500,000 babies a year are at risk for serious health complications, and have an increased chance of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. African American women are three times more likely than any other race to die from pregnancy-related

causes and up to 50% higher chance for giving birth prematurely. More than 2/3 of maternal deaths are preventable. Nearly 1 in 7 women do not have health insurance the month prior to pregnancy. We need to take immediate action to prioritize the healthcare for our nation’s moms and babies. The March of Dimes has helped millions of babies over the last 80 years. President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis during his

own personal fight with polio. Once pioneering the vaccine research and eradicating the polio epidemic, he shifted their mission to focus on moms and babies. In 2001, the March of Dimes launched the NICU Family Support® program to provide information, support and education to NICU families. Today, the program is at work in 67 hospitals around the country serving more than 50,000 families annually. All funding provides critical research for interventions, tools, and education for medical professionals. Your donations implement supportive care programs, resources, and advocating policies for NICU families across our country. The knowledge, educational resources, comfort and support the program provided my family during one of the most unexpected and trying times in our life was a lifeline to us all. romper. I also love the idea of mixing in textures with a cable-knit turtleneck worn with pieces in other plush fabrics, like shearling jackets and corduroy trousers. There are a multitude of ways to wear turtlenecks through fall into winter. And multiple retailers have stocked up on turtlenecks for the season. Stores like Target and Walmart have affordable options in a variety of colors and patterns. Online, H&M has turtleneck dresses and jacquard-knits, while Uniqlo and Gap have basic neutral turtlenecks for all of your layering needs. If you’re looking for an investment piece, check out the cashmere turtleneck sweaters from Boden, Macy’s, and Nordstrom. However, you wear it, there’s something uniquely powerful about a turtleneck, and you’ll never regret buying one.

Late autumn is a great time to experiment with color, and turtlenecks are no exception. Turtleneck tops in fall-friendly shades like burgundy, mustard, red, and magenta bring a fresh sense to relaxed pants and jeans. Wear a brightly colored turtle on its own or use it as a layering piece in place of your standard black turtleneck from above. I also like a boldly hued turtleneck under floral summer dresses. You can get a few more wears out of a flowery sundress when worn over a turtleneck and tights. Shift and midi-dresses also pair well with turtlenecks and boots. A brightly colored turtleneck knit will add a vibrance to any fall outfit. Speaking of fall now is the perfect season to play around with equestrianinspired looks. Think jodhpurs, ridingstyle boots, tweedy blazers, and of course, turtlenecks. A lightweight turtleneck pairs beautifully with a fitted cardigan, blazer, leggings, and knee-high boots. Or style it with a fall-fun plaid trouser, wool socks, and loafers. For a more minimal look, pair a fitted oatmeal turtleneck with a sleek high-waisted midi skirt and slide-on sneakers. Turtlenecks can also be edgy when paired with combat boots, leather jacket, and faded jeans. They are great at helping you look cool while not feeling the cool. And they can help you switch things up layered under a jumpsuit or

Ask UPMC: Is it Flu, Cold, or Something More? By Rutul Dalal, MD, Medical Director Infectious Diseases, UPMC

A

s fall turns into winter, many of us are preparing for spending more time indoors and the approaching cold and flu season. While these preparations are typical for this time of year in the region, what’s different this year is that a cough, sore throat, or slight fever may cause anxiety because of COVID-19. COVID-19 is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a different virus than the flu, but they can have similar symptoms. If you aren’t feeling well, it is important to take extra precautions this year and talk to your provider. Flu and Cold Symptoms It can be difficult to tell the difference between cold and flu based on symptoms because they are so similar. The flu usually feels like an intense cold. The common symptoms of cold and flu include: • Cough • Fatigue • Sore throat • Sneezing • Stuffy nose

The flu will have additional symptoms, including shortness of breath, fever, chills, aches, and headache. A cold will typically not develop into other health problems, while the flu can be life-threatening for some or turn into pneumonia or sinus and ear infections. If you get a flu test as soon as symptoms start, medication may help you get better more quickly. Unfortunately, a cold just takes time to work through your body. COVID-19 Symptoms COVID-19 is a new virus. Researchers are learning more and more about it every day. COVID-19 seems to spread more easily than the flu and can cause serious illness in some people. The symptoms can take some time after exposure to show, and not everyone has the same symptoms. Some people may not experience any symptoms. Common symptoms that COVID-19 and flu share include: • Aches • Chills • Cough • Fatigue • Fever • Headache • Shortness of breath

vaccination available yet for COVID-19. Specific methods to prevent the spread of COVID-19 include: Wearing a Facemask or Face Covering: Follow the CDC’s and Pennsylvania Department of Health’s recommendations for wearing facemasks in public. Social Distancing: When out in public, maintain at least six feet of distance from people who are not members of your household. There are also prevention methods you can use for both the coronavirus and the flu. These steps can help protect you from getting infected by the flu or COVID-19

and help prevent their spread: • Avoid contact with people who are infected. • Stay home if you’re sick. • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. • Wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Wash for at least 20 seconds — especially after coughing and sneezing, using the bathroom, and before eating. • Avoid touching your nose, eyes, or mouth. • Disinfect commonly touched surfaces, such as tables and counters, at work, home, and school.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible for anyone, including a doctor, to tell the difference from symptoms alone. COVID-19 can only be confirmed through a test. If your symptoms become severe and you are having difficulty catching your breath or becoming confused, call 911 or immediately seek emergency medical treatment. Dr. Rutul Dalal is medical director of infectious diseases and chairman of Infection Prevention and Control at UPMC in the Susquehanna Region. lectron tubes used in radar systems in military aircraft now in Vietnam and in revolutionary microwave cooking stems are being manufactured at the Litton Electron Tube Division at the Litton Industries, 1035 Westminster Drive. In this way the firm is following the path by the leaders of the industry who have counseled for the way for the industry which has been geared to national defense to survive is to adapt its skills it has acquired in this field to peacetime consumer needs. Long in the manufacture of magnetrons, the main component of radar systems, the area plant is now entering into the manufacture of microtron tubes, which the company believes will revolutionize food preparation as well as various processes in industry requiring heating. Since Litton acquired the plant from Sylvania Electric Products Inc. on January 15, its primary objective has been to improve and expand the line of

products made by the Sylvania plant. The plant employs 325, many of them highly skilled technicians. The Williamsport plant is one of five Flextron Tube Division, the other four, including the headquarters and research division are located at San Carlos, California. Moving now into the production of the microtron, the company plans to expand its production through manufacture of this tube and other devices developed for the civilian market. Although it now occupies 70,000 square feet of the plant, which has a total area of approximately 200,000 square feet, Litton eventually hopes to occupy the entire facility. Part of the plant is still maintained by Sylvania which has warehousing and finishing operations there. Although use of the microwave oven in the average home is a few years off, one major manufacturer of kitchen incorporates a three-unit—microwave oven, conventional oven and burners model for the consumer market.

The Roving Sportsman‌ Night Vision Optics Now Legal for Furbearer Hunters Jon Pries

I

n July of this year through the passage of House Bill 1188, the Game Commission was given authority to regulate night-vision and infrared optics. Previously, any and all hunting use of night-vision and infrared (thermal) optics was prohibited by state law. Now, having the authority to do so, the Game Commission has granted furbearer hunters the option to use these handheld or sporting arms mounted optics. The law that permits the use of these devices became effective on Monday, November 9, 2020. When it comes to furbearers, they are listed in two categories that can be taken either by hunting or by trapping. The following furbearers can be taken by hunting: Raccoons and foxes, Coyotes, opossums, striped skunks and weasels, Bobcats and (believe it or not!) Porcupines. Their seasons and limits are as follows: Raccoons and foxes can be hunted from October 24 to February 20, and there is no daily limit or possession

limit. For coyotes, opossums, striped skunks and weasels, there are no limits and there is no closed season, with certain exceptions during big game seasons. Bobcat hunting requires a special permit, and only one animal can be taken per license year. They can be hunted in 16 of Pennsylvania’s WMUs. Please refer to the current PA Hunting and Trapping Digest for the list of applicable WMU’s for hunting bobcats and the restrictions during big game seasons for hunting coyotes, opossums, striped skunks and weasels. Finally, porcupines have a daily limit of 3 and a season limit of 10 and can be hunted from October 10 to January 30. Predator hunters throughout Pennsylvania have for a long time known that hunting the various predators can often be much more effective in the hours of darkness. Handheld or sporting arms mounted lights are beneficial in locating and identifying animals as they respond to various calls, but can sometimes alert an animal to potential danger. Now,

typically displayed black and white on the LCD screen, as opposed to the traditional green and black on a regular night vision. Digital night vision can also be used in the daytime and is typically cheaper than traditional night vision. Unlike night vision, infrared or thermal devices read heat. The heat processor detects the minute and large differences in heat and creates a digital picture of the landscape and animal in the optic. In the white-hot mode, for example, hotter objects will appear white and cooler objects will be darker. The hotter the object, the brighter the white and the cooler the object that darker the black. One advantage of thermal over night vision is that it can see through tall grass, fog, smoke, etc., because it is reading heat and not using light to “see” the image. Another advantage of thermal over night vision is that it can detect objects at a much further range. Entry level pricing for night vision can be more manageable, while thermal devices can quickly range into thousands of dollars. Either way, it’s nice to know that these optics are now legal for predator hunting in Pennsylvania.

with the use of night vision or infrared devices, hunting of predators at night should be much more successful. It is legal to use natural or manmade nonliving bait and any electronic or mechanical device to attract coyotes for hunting. When hunting for coyotes, you may hunt over bait that is visible from the air. Here again, the use of night vision optics will greatly enhance your chances of success. So, what are the differences between night vision devices and infrared or thermal optics? As you look into a night vision optic, you see a green hued screen. Night vision collects and intensifies ambient light — starlight, moonlight and any other light in the night sky — to allow you to see into the dark. Some night vision optics are paired with an infrared light to help illuminate a field or target in the pitch black, especially on a moonless night. The infrared is invisible to the eye, but through a night vision scope it looks like a spotlight. Digital night vision is one of the latest designs and uses an intensifier tube which captures light through an objective lens and then processes it with a charged coupler device and then sends an image to an LCD screen. Digital night vision is

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Lots of Coyote Sightings

T

rust me, even though you may not have seen any coyotes lately, there are still plenty of them roaming the countryside. Over the past couple of months, I have had a number of people tell me about the coyotes they have spotted, with a couple of people even reporting that they saw a pack of coyotes; we’re talking three or four in one

bunch. I suspect one of the reasons for the increase in sightings is simply because more people are roaming the woods now that a number of hunting seasons are open. While I haven’t spotted any coyotes during my own outdoor ventures lately, I have seen my fair share lying dead on highways. The sighting of a coyote can solicit all kinds of reactions; some

people are excited to see one, and there are some who hate the critters. If you are a farmer losing livestock due to coyotes, you probably fall Ken into that second Hunter category. There is no doubt that some hunters fall into that second category as well, and some just plain fear the coyote even though

it’s highly unlikely to be a threat to humans. Early records show that the first “eastern coyote” was killed in Tioga County in 1942. It is believed that the first coyotes made their way into Pennsylvania by way of the Catskill Mountains in New York and then spread south and west across the state. I heard of my first coyote sighting in the ‘60s when I was living in western Pennsylvania; it was such a rarity that many of us didn’t

6,000, and about half of that number were coyotes taken while hunters were actually after turkeys, bear, or deer. Coyote hunters and trappers accounted for the other half. It’s also interesting to note that of all the coyotes taken, only about 15 percent were adults. The coyote has earned its not-solikable reputation from its taste for a variety of food items that include a wide range of wild game, plants, and fruits, and in some cases, domestic animals. revealed that deer was a dominant food item, but that should not be surprising since we make plenty of deer remains available during our hunting seasons, including wounded and not recovered deer. We make even more available on our highways. Just last week, on a trip out Interstate 80 to DuBois, my brother and I counted 24 dead deer on or along the highway, and I’m sure we missed some. Of course, coyotes are opportunists and will eat what they can capture;

mice, voles, rabbits, or any other wild critter, but on occasion, they will take chickens, ducks, goats, and yes, even the neighborhood cat. So, the coyotes are still out there, and they are doing just fine. Last week, a friend of mine showed me a photo he had of a pack of three not far from his front yard and not that awful far from my front yard. Even if you don’t get to see one, you might want to keep your ears tuned for some of their nighttime howls.

believe the report. By the 1970s, the Pocono Mountains had a pretty good population, and coyotes continued to expand their range until by the 1990s they occupied the entire state. The total Pennsylvania coyote population in the 1990s was believed to be between 15,00020,000, and although I don’t have any recent figures, I suspect that the number has grown considerably since then. Back in the early 90s the harvest was believed to be around

game, and Zack was there playing catch with the younger kids. He loves playing touch football games. Over the years, when recruiters would come to watch players, one of the questions they often ask is, ‘Do you like the game of football?’ That was what kept him going, his love of the game. He is just a great competitor. He wants to win, and he strives for excellence.” His high school year now over, Miller can look back and be proud of what he accomplished. “Achieving 1,000 yards is very special to me, especially in light of the shortened season we played. With the fewer number of games on our schedule, I didn’t think I’d be able to reach 1,000 yards.” Miller knows he has his teammates and coaches to thank for making it all possible. Especially Eiswerth, for whom he says “means a lot to me. He is like a father-figure to me.” To anyone who has ever coached, those are the highest words of praise.

as we did in the shortened season we had. Football is very important to me. Growing up, I’ve always loved football. I have dedicated a lot of time in the weight room, did my schoolwork, and listened to the coaches and did what I could do to make myself a better football player.” “Zack had his goals,” Eiswerth explained. “He had said to me early on that he was going to go after Dom Bragalone’s records. Those are some gaudy records, to say the least, but it shows you what kind of football drive he has. The fact that he wanted to chase greatness excited us. Having that motivation to do those things and do the things he did in the weight room; he did to get stronger all paid dividends for him. “Zack is a guy who has earned everything he has accomplished. As a coach, that is what makes you so proud to be a part of young people’s lives. As a seventh-grader, he showed great potential, was a little rough around the edges, but continued to come around. He had some good moments as a sophomore and junior. But he waited his turn, and then his senior year, he just exploded into a big-time player that we could count on. He ended up showing everyone that hard work pays off. “Watching his development this season was a little bit like watching a painting come to life on canvas. He ran with a great purpose. Each week it was neat to watch. It was a growing, a maturity, and a process of blossoming. He was doing more things each week, doing them a little better and a little faster. There was a kind of beauty the way he was twisting and moving and exploding through holes. “He is a guy that loves the game. The other day I went down to watch a Pop Warner

tippet. At the end of that piece is where I tie on my first nymph. Some folks will add another fly section to the bend of the hook, but I normally stick with one. A split shot weight is added if needed. I usually use a small weight a few inches above. The last step in a basic nymph rig is to find that lucky strike indicator or bobber. The amount of weight I use will vary. A lot depends on the speed and depth of the water. The key here is to use enough weight to have your nymph bouncing along the bottom. Trout are now sluggish, and they don’t need to work as hard. My placement of the strike indicator also depends, but it should be

MURRAY

COLLISION

placed at one and a half times the depth as a general rule of thumb. Always be sure that your presentation moves with the flow of the current. Your nymph should drift naturally. Pay close attention to your elements. The water is now crystal clear, and the fish will spook easy. Patience is so important. Throw a few casts upstream to practice. Think slow. Watch that indicator and focus on what happens. You should be able to tell the difference between a strike and brushing the bottom. When you see a sudden twitch or pause, simply raise your rod. Again. There is no need to set the hook like Bill Dance or Jimmy Houston. This obviously takes time to

master. It only requires a slight tug. Don’t get too excited — and stay focused. This is much easier said than done. It will get better. Trust me. The Delayed Harvest section near Powys Curve is my personal favorite. I fish this stretch all year long, and it provides some exceptional opportunities. I managed to catch several healthy rainbows in the downpours. My lovely bride called me a moron for heading out in the extreme conditions. I had to get out. Fishing is my zen. I stayed patient and finally found the right combination. Catching fish is a blast, especially all alone on Lycoming Creek with a fly rod. Give nymphing a try, kids. You will be rewarded. Cheers.

and this provides some of the year’s best nymph fishing. Nymphs are aquatic insects that are still in their busy underwater stages. It is said that over 90 percent of a trout’s diet consists of the little critters, which are why these bugs are so effective on a year-round basis. The primary nymph that we most often imitate is this blue-wing olive. Despite their small size, trout focus on these insects because of their abundance. Again, I am just a fly fishing novice, and I have only been at this since COVID. I still have a long way to go, but I am starting to figure it out. The basic nymph setup consists of a 9-foot leader, to which I add another 12 to 18 inches of
