Just What the Doctor Ordered

B

efore I get started, I want to be clear — I am not talking about Dr. Anthony Fauci or Dr. Rachel Levine. I am talking about Doctor J — Julius Erving. I think we all need a little break from the COVID craziness and political divide. For all you younger folks out there, or those who might not know who Dr. J is, here’s a quick overview. He was the high-flying face of American basketball before Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan. He could defy gravity and hang in the air forever. David Thompson, most famous for his NC State days, and Dr. J were the first to make dunking an art form. Every young person who loved basketball wanted to be Dr. J when I was growing up. He united people from all walks of life. He was beyond cool, charismatic, intelligent, and blessed by God with amazing athletic talent. He wore the big 70’s afro during his early days with the New Jersey Nets, and then retired with a touch of gray, distinguished, tight haircut, looking ready for the governor’s office. In an interview I recently watched, the good Dr. noted some of his most special memories from his basketball career. They included his playing days and graduating from the University of Massachusetts and then bringing home an NBA championship to the City of Brotherly Love for the 76ers. Julius Erving was, for my money, the greatest ambassador the NBA has ever had.

His love and sharing through a game and real-life experiences have never ended. He is a living example of all the good that is possible through sports. Not everybody is going to be the next Dr. J, Michael Jordan, or LeBron James. However, I cannot overemphasize the importance of athletic competition regarding the development of young minds and bodies. Before you read on, think of the once-in-alifetime opportunities lost if the fall sports season would have been canceled. Congratulations to the Warrior Run Defender girls’ cross country team. These amazing young ladies ran all the way home with the 2A Pennsylvania State Championship. Warrior Run continues to build upon a great legacy of female student-athletes. The championship trophy complete with gold medal will look unbelievable behind glass in the Defender’s display case. See cover story, page 6. A soccer salute to the Lewisburg Green Dragon boys’ soccer team. They defeated Deer Lake 6-nil to bring home the PIAA 2A State championship. The Green Dragons have dominated their competition in recent years, winning four state titles since the 2000 season. The class of 2020 has posted a record of 78-10-2 during their careers. Winning three District 4 titles and now capping it off with the PA gold medal. Senior midfielder Ben Liscum was the 2019 Pennsylvania 2A player of the year. He should again win the award this season

after scoring 35 goals and dishing out 29 assists. He will be losing the green and wearing blue and white next season for the Penn State Nittany Lions. A Webb Weekly tip of the cap to Coach Ben Kettlewell on the championship season! That gets us to our last Jim West Branch Valley team Webb, Jr. competing for gold at Hershey Park Arena this season. At press time, Coach Tom Gravish’s Jersey Shore Bulldogs were preparing to take on perennial state power Thomas Jefferson for the 4A state football crown. What a doggone great season the Orange and Black have put together. Hopefully, as you’re reading this, they’ve added State Champions to the resume. The District 4 and PA East champion are currently undefeated 10-0. They have been dominant on both sides of the ball, averaging 38.6 points a game on offense while giving up less than a touchdown on defense. Tip of my military appreciation Steelers’ cap with the American Flag on the side to Dawgs’ D-Coordinator, Alex Jackson. He is one of the best defensive coaches in the state. Coach Gravish has built a truly remarkable program in Bulldogland. They exemplify family, togetherness, and team. The talent has always been there in Jersey Shore; it has taken just the right teacher/coach to bring it all together.

Some great individual performers for the Bulldogs this season have been the following. Junior All-State Receiver Cayden Hess has become the area’s all-time leading pass catcher. Recording 139 catches, covering 1,786 yards. He has crossed the goal line 20 times during his career. Senior Owen Anderson has accounted for over 1,000 total yards while scoring 17 touchdowns. Hopefully, he joins Cayden on the All-State team this season as a selection at the athlete position. Senior Cam Allison has led the Bulldog ground attack rushing for over 1,000 yards in scoring nine touchdowns. He has topped the 100-yard mark in seven games. Senior quarterback Branden Weary waited his turn behind last year’s PA Player of the Year, Tanner Lorson. The young man has gotten every squeeze out of his season as the starter passing for 1,843 yards and 22 TDs. Most impressively, he’s only been picked off one time. The team’s offensive efforts begin upfront with a pack of Bulldogs — tackles Lee Springman and Ben Webb, guards Eddie Woodring and Joe Lorson. The center, Cayden Smith, and Colin Samar have provided some O line depth. Coach Jackson’s side of the ball has featured the epitome of Team Defense. Hayden Packer leads the team averaging over seven tackles per game. Dalton Dugan and Quincey Myers are tied for the team lead with 9.5 quarterback sacks. The speedy and athletic Hess has six interceptions. We’ll have much more on the Bulldogs next week. God Bless America.

New Elves for Christmas Fun!

A

re you ready for Christmas? With everything happening this year, I’m ready to set my sights on the ‘most wonderful time of the year.’ Nothing says Christmas around the Webb Weekly office like when The Blaise Alexander Christmas Coloring Contest is in full swing! We have entries coming in left and right, and our elves are hard at work. If you haven’t heard, every year I bring in elves, straight from the North Pole, to help me out. They are helping judge the entries, along with keeping them sorted by age group, and compiling the list of names to be published the week of Christmas! We brought in a whole new batch of the little pointy-eared imps this year, and they are little overwhelmed with the Christmas fun. I’ve already caught them headed toward Candy Cane Lane and I heard that they are looking for a ride to Knoebels for Christmas Through the Grove. Frosty Nippymitten, Cherry Sparklepie, Tinsel Sweetkiss and Sprinkles Hollyhat, are easily distracted so if you see them out and about, please call them an Uber and send them back to our office! I’ve found dangling a Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes in front of them like a carrot helps to keep them on task. Except for Tinsel, she seems

to prefer — well — Tinsel. This is the 2nd week for the coloring contest, so you have plenty of time to get your entries in. Steph We have LOTS of Nordstrom great prizes from Flyworld, English Model Railroad, Elery Nau, Hooplas, Treasure Castle Playland, Harder Sporting Goods, AMC Theaters, Dairy Queen, Trout Pond Park and Faxon Bowling! If you need another copy of the contest, check out our Facebook page. It is pinned to the top of the page so you can download and print it out if you need to! The page is also up on our website in a printable form if you need more copies! You can drop them off in the office or mail them to: Blaise Alexander Christmas Coloring Contest c/o Webb Weekly 280 Kane St., S. Williamsport, PA 17702 The coloring page and details are on pages 18 and 19. Speaking of Santa… Every year around this time I share a Facebook post that I stumbled upon a couple of years ago that says, “Just a reminder to all the parents out there to

be modest with your gifts from ‘Santa’. Not all parents have a ton of cash to spend on making their kids’ Christmas special, so it doesn’t make sense to have Santa give your kid a PlayStation5, a bike, and an iPad, while his best friend at school gets a new hat and mittens from Santa. Give them something small from Santa and make the more expensive presents from you. You can explain the value of money to kids, but you can’t explain Santa’s discrimination to a heartbroken kid.” Say it louder for the people in the back. “You can explain the value of money to kids, but you can’t explain Santa’s discrimination to a heartbroken kid.” I think this is a really important thing to share and the parents on my friends list have been 100% supportive of the idea. There have been several over the years that were already doing this and several other who said that they were going to start. Listen, if you are willing and able to give your child a new XBox, a Tesla, and a summer vacation in Italy for Christmas, by all means do so! (and maybe consider letting me tag along to Italy) However, make sure they understand those gifts are from you. Let Santa bring new PJs or books. Don’t let some other child think that Santa loves them less, or worse yet, that they were somehow ‘bad’ and less deserving than little Joey up the street. Being a kid in today’s world is hard enough without adding to it.

020 was an interesting year, to say the least, and high school sports in Central Pa was no exception. This was especially true for the Warrior Run Girls Cross Country team, who won the PIAA 2A state championship in Hershey by defeating 5-time state champs, Central Cambria. The Warrior Run Girls Cross Country team consisted of Alyssa Hoffman, Mikaela Majcher, Alanna Ranck, Lauren Trapani, Sage Dunkleberger, Sienna Dunkleberger, Rory Dunnick, Kelsey Hoffman, Peyton Ranck, Lillian Wertz. The coaches were Kip Hoffman, Scott Hoffman, Tom Williams, and head coach, Corey Dufrene. Five girls were able to score team points for Warrior Run. Lauren Trapani led her team with a 5th place overall finish, 2nd place among qualifying teams, with a time of 20:04. Alyssa Hoffman took 17th place overall, 5th among qualifying teams, with a time of 20:44. Both Trapani and Hoffman took home individual medals for their efforts. Sage and Sienna Dunkleberger took 35th and 37th places, 10th and 11th among qualifying teams, while Alanna Ranck and Mikaela Majcher were also able to earn points for the Defenders

with 40th and 50th place finishes overall, 12th and 15th among qualifying teams. I was able to catch up with Head Coach Corey Dufrene for an interview. Coach, please give me a general overview of your competition season. How difficult was the schedule? The 2020 season was a modified PHAC schedule due to COVID-19. The season consisted of 6 dual meets and no invitationals. A normal season would have been 6 PHAC meets versus 3 or 4 other teams (not dual meets). It also would have consisted of at least three invitationals against many of the PHAC schools and many schools from outside of the area. When the new schedule came out, we were excited because we were happy just to be able to have a season. Our schedule consisted of Selinsgrove, Midd-West, Lewisburg, Mifflinburg, Milton, and Shikellamy. It was not an easy schedule. Two of our first three meets were against really good teams in Selinsgrove and Lewisburg. Lewisburg finished in 5th place as a team in 2019 and returned many of their key runners. We completed our dual meet season against a really good Shikellamy team that had two individual state qualifiers. So I would say that our dual meet season was very tough and prepared us well for districts. In my opinion, District IV was

and throughout the summer. We were able to see the training they were doing from afar, and it was awesome seeing them putting in the miles. Maybe it was because they had nothing better to do, but it definitely went a long way in being ready for the start of the cross country season. Our competition was definitely impacted due to COVID-19. As stated before, our season was modified, and we weren’t allowed to attend invitationals. We were a bit concerned about the lack of big meet experience, but we were not really focused on that early on. Our biggest concern was whether we would finish the season. Did the pandemic create any uncertainty of even having a season? COVID-19 caused a day-by-day aspect to life in general. We all looked forward with hope that life would return to somewhat normal (as normal as possible). When we found out that we were going to be allowed to go forward with the season, we were so excited and wanted to ensure that we did everything we could to ensure that the season continued. It was day-by-day and weekby-week for us. The kids were great in just enjoying every opportunity. One of the things we talked about often was taking advantage of our opportunities because they aren’t always a given, and our kids seemed to embrace this all season. What were some of the other obstacles you faced?

one of the best districts in the state of Pennsylvania in 2020 for girls AA cross country. Did you feel you had a strong team going into the season? Were there any exceptional veteran athletes, rising stars, etc.? We felt that we had a pretty solid group entering the season. We entered the season with five very talented and experienced runners in Sage Dunkleberger, Alyssa Hoffman, Mikaela Majcher, Alanna Ranck, and Lauren Trapani. Our team rounded out with five pretty talented freshmen as well in Sienna Dunkleberger, Rory Dunnick, Kelsey Hoffman, Peyton Ranck, and Lillian Wertz. The biggest contributor to the confidence we had in this group was the work that they put in during the offseason, which was a little bit longer due to COVID-19. We were able to see the hard work they put in daily from afar, and it was exciting. How did COVID affect training and competition? COVID-19 affected many different aspects of the cross country season in many different ways. Our training didn’t change a whole lot during the season other than having to wear masks when we weren’t actively training and having to be screened before every practice. The biggest area that was affected due to COVID-19 was the offseason. During the spring, the kids worked hard after the outdoor track season was shut down

We faced many obstacles this season, but it was all worth it in the end. The biggest obstacle we faced was the COVID-19 protocols and how to navigate through them. This was not exclusive to Warrior Run. Wearing masks and making sure to social distance as much as possible was difficult, but worth it if it meant a season. It changed how our practices looked and functioned. It also changed how we coached, as well. Did the team expect to do as well as they did, or was it sort of week-by-week? It was week-by-week this year, mostly due to COVID-19. Each week we had a strategy for training and competition, and the team bought in. It served us well throughout the season. We knew that we could be good, but they never looked too far ahead. Other than the athletes, were there any people that were critical to the team’s success? As with many successful teams, it’s never just the coaches and athletes. We couldn’t have done any of this without the support we received from many other people. None of this would have been possible without the support and dedication from the parents and families of the athletes, administrators, and staff at Warrior Run. All of the little things that make a season successful were greatly appreciated. Is there anything else you want to add? There were two other things that I’d like

Michael R. Lingg Funeral Director

Saying Good-Bye During the Covid-19 Pandemic

to mention. First of all, Alyssa Hoffman, a senior on the team, was able to take on and complete a project that was much needed for Warrior Run Cross Country as well as Warrior Run. Alyssa was able to plan and facilitate the construction of a new bridge across the Warrior Run Creek on school property. The new bridge was completed in time for our first home meet and, as stated, was much needed. The old bridge was not very safe and was only capable of one-way foot traffic. The new bridge is now capable of allowing two-way foot traffic and will be there for years to come. Second, the new bridge allowed us to offer to host the District IV Championship meet this year when district officials were looking for a location to hold the meet due to the shutdown of Bloomsburg University because of COVID-19. They accepted the offer, and we were able to hold districts at Warrior Run for the first time. It was great for our seniors to be able to run their last high school district meet on their home course. It just added to a truly awesome season! It was difficult putting in words all the good that took place this season. I am truly proud of the work each athlete put in this season, and I am happy for them that they will always be able to look back on this moment and know they were Warrior Run’s first state champion cross country TEAM!

CAN OUR FAMILY HAVE A VIEWING IF OUR LOVED ONE DIED OF COVID-19?

Spending time with a loved one after they have died allows us to acknowledge their death and begin mourning. This is especially true for families unable to be with their loved one at the time of their death. Although, we have certain restrictions in place, our funeral home is working with those restrictions to allow as many family members and friends the opportunity to say a final good-bye and honor the life lived. Embalming of the body is required to have a viewing and this process will allow your loved one to be viewed without the threat of the spread of COVID-19. We are here to help every family creatively meet their mourning needs safely.

Boos Turn to Cheers for Kitchen Makeover

I

t was a month before Christmas when the Fairfield Auto Groups’ Rick Quigley-driven red Chevy Tahoe made its way up Poco Farm Road. But for its passengers, the Boos (pronounced Bose) family of Loyalsock Township, it might just as well have been Santa’s red sleigh on Christmas morning. The event was the culmination of iHeart Media’s annual Extreme Kitchen Makeover radio promotion and the awaiting transformation of their Pine Summit Road home was more than they

could have imagined. It had been ten days since the Boos had been notified they were the winners of this year’s KISS-FM’s Gary Chrisman Morning Show annual contest, during which time they had been tucked away as guests of the Genetti Hotel & Suites. “Since we found out we were the winners, the anticipation of what they could possibly be doing had filled my mind. When I walked in and saw what had been done, it blew me away. I never could have dreamed the makeover would be this

extensive and beautiful,” a thrilled Lori Boos admitted. “I was expecting a makeover of the kitchen, but all the extra things they did with the pantry, the steps, the stonework, the wood stove area, they moved the bathroom and even put in a shower for my dogs that may be nicer than my shower upstairs. It is so much more than I could have imagined. I just love everything. I’ve never won anything before. This is all just perfect.” The promotion began in the early 2000s when the idea was pitched to Joe Livorno, from JP Stone Granite & Marble. Livorno loved the idea and came aboard as the original sponsor of the Extreme Kitchen Makeover event. Although several

changes have been made since then, now in its 13th year, the popular Chrisman Morning Show radio promotion is still going strong. There have been a few years when the

MAKEOVER promotion did not occur, but Chrisman remained adamant regarding the event’s popularity. “It’s too good of an event not to do,” Chrisman stressed. “This now marks our fifth consecutive year of doing it again. When we brought it back, John Albrano Construction was our lead sponsor for two years and for the past three years Maurice Bower, of TurnKey Construction, has been the lead sponsor and really has taken the event to new highs as it relates to what has been done at the homes of the various winners. “We wanted to do something special

for these families. This is something that maybe they could never do, or afford to do, of this caliber. What begins as a kitchen makeover often turns into much more than that, with a whole lot of other perks added because of the interest, workmanship and the desire to do something really special by all the various sponsors participating.” “We love giving back to the community,” explained TurnKey’s Maurice Bower. “We have been very fortunate with our company, and I was very happy to get involved with this project. We’ve been doing this for a few years, and we are going to stick with it and pass it on with

my son when he takes over. There is a lot of work involved but when you see the surprise and happiness on the faces of the family when they see what has been done, it is well worth it.” On the morning the Boos family was notified as the contest winner, and before the remodeling work began, Williamsport Moving & Storage began the task of removing household items from the home and storing them until the work was completed. A work crew consisting of 30, 12 of whom were TurnKey employees, spent ten days transforming the Boos home. Workdays often stretched from 7:00 a.m. till midnight to ensure an on-time completion of the project. Their efforts were supported with

products and services provided by Elery Nau Hardware, Bob’s Disposal, Pudgies Pizza, Chef Hosch & Ann’s Catering; Susquehanna Unlimited Services; Beiter’s and Bud Light. While TurnKey Construction played the lead role as the general contractor in producing the kitchen magic, a host of local businesses played important roles in the process. Cabinetry was provided by Lezzer Lumber and Design Center; granite countertops by Susquehanna Marble & Granite; plumbing and heating courtesy of R. J. Ertel; electrical work by Hammond Electric; Howell Dry Wall & Painting spruced up the interior; appliances were

provided by Bill’s Appliance Center; flooring by New Life Wood Floors; Woodrich American made furniture; decorative accessories from Alechia’s; and interior design created by Seidel Shiffer of Timeless Furniture and Interiors. “While the COVID crisis caused some concerns, there was even more reason to do this again this year,” added Chrisman. “With so many people out of work and finances being a concern, this made the event even bigger to help people out. Everyone was thinking in a positive direction. You have to get back to work and open the economy and for our sponsors this is a way to give back to folks who are experiencing a tough year. “The response from listeners was huge. We had over 2,000 entries that were eventually narrowed down to about 200. From there we were able to determine five finalists. Two were from Williamsport, one from Jersey Shore, one from Muncy and the eventual winner, the Boos family from rural Loyalsock Township. At that point a committee met with each of the five families to determine what was going to be needed to be done and five sets of plans were made up so we would be ready to begin work once the winner was determined. “KISS/FM has always done big promotions. I think people know we are going to do something first class and do it well. You can do major market radio

promotions in a small town. You have to think big and if you do you can find a lot of other sponsors that will think big with you. Personally, I think this is one of the greatest radio promotions ever done in the history of this radio market. If people had to pay for the value of the kitchen makeover, it would cost them a lot of money.” Echoing his wife’s excitement, Rob Boos took in the improvements with amazement. “This is absolutely beautiful. After I got over the initial wow factor and realized how much work went into this, it is amazing to see the attention to detail that is involved. This is an older house and we had done some renovations since we moved in (2006) but the amount of man hours and work that went into this in a ten-day period, it’s hard to imagine how they pulled this off in that time frame.” “I’ve now witnessed this many times, but it is always exciting to see the look in the winner’s eyes when they find out they won,” Chrisman confessed. “But it is just like a TV show when you take them back to the house when the work has been completed. The look on their faces is priceless when they walk into their house and they don’t recognize what they are about to see, they are totally blown away by this brand-new look. It is always fun for me. I love this stuff.” It goes without saying, so do the Boos!

Andrea’s Home Cookin…

All is Bright

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Toys in every store. But the prettiest sight to see, is the holly that will be, On your own front door.

T

he holidays are officially here. I feel like, more than ever, we have been longing for Christmas time to be here. It gives us something to look forward to, and we all need some joy in our lives right now after the year we have had. I honestly could not believe in the middle of November how many Christmas trees I saw in the windows of different homes, and lights lit up outside. It brought me joy, and I am sure many others too! I love Christmas very much, and think it is absolutely wonderful that people started early. Four weeks just isn’t enough to take in all that Christmas has to offer. I started Christmas music at the end of October. I can never get enough of it. I get it from my dad who keeps Christmas music in his vehicles all year long. It’s seriously the cutest thing. When I was little, my parents always made Christmas so special. Christmas lights were always Dad’s thing though. Mom loved the white lights; Dad loved the colored lights. We lived in a cute little ranch house in Old Lycoming Township. The back had a nice deck that always had colored lights, and the front had a beautiful white birch sitting off to the right of the house, outside

my bedroom window. Dad always would borrow the bucket truck from work, and around and around he would go around that tree with white lights to the tippy tippy top. It was stunning when it was done. The Kocher family right across the street from our home also had a big white birch in their yard. Dad helped Tom with his tree, so the top Andrea of Roosevelt Ave. always looked so McElroy beautiful lit up with these amazing lit trees. So, you can imagine the view from my bedroom window. Then, guess what I could see out my other bedroom window off the side of the house? Candy. Cane. Lane. Yup. I could see the litup street from miles away. I still think to this day, this is where my love of lights came from. (Wait for a special column this month around the week of the 19th of December, I have a fun idea I want to do for my readers!) My dad, Lee Perry, is now our neighbor. He moved below us a few years ago with my stepmom, Chrissie. My brother, Luke Perry and his wife Loren, live above us. They are both our closest neighbors. My dad is still hardcore on those colored lights. My brother and I are like our momma, we love the white look. My brother told my dad this year he is in the country now, time to do some white lights! We always tease him that he is messing up our matching white lights in our compound, when he does colored.

Then, Dad teases us and asks us when we are going to do colored. Haha!! It’s a yearly thing, we all tease each other about the lights. Then my momma, Susan Metzger, and stepdad Mark, do white lights on the farmhouse who live three miles up the road from us. My mom throws her icicle lights in a garbage bag to store them at the end of the year and somehow those puppies work every single year!!! We crack up! Then my dad and I, who are ever so neat and put them away nice, get them out and they don’t work. I just don’t get it!? You can’t make it up — throw your lights in a bag everyone!! Dad said to me last week, the week before Thanksgiving, “Now, I have our Christmas lights to come on from 5 to 11 at night, and from 5-7 in the morning.” “Why do you have them come on in the morning, Dad?” I asked. “Because I want to give joy to people and happiness on their way to work,” he said. This is the kind of man he is. So thoughtful, and truly keeps the joy of Christmas in his heart. Lights make people happier. When I see them, I feel eight years old again. I could drive up and down Candy Cane Lane 500 times and never get sick of it. Colored, white or solid colors, I love them. Looking down at my dad’s from our dining room windows, I can’t help but smile. Even though they are colored, it looks so beautiful and they truly go all out. I’m 35 years old, and Dad still makes the Christmas lights outside so special. It wouldn’t be the same if he did white lights — but don’t tell him I said that. *wink wink* Hi Dad.

Christmas Punch Ingredients: • 1 (64-ounce) container Cranberry juice cocktail • 1 (20-ounce) container of pineapple chunks • 1 container frozen lemonade • 1 – 2 liter Sprite or 7 up • Orange slices (for garnish) • Fresh cranberries (for garnish) • Lots of ice Directions: Squeeze the container of frozen lemonade into a large drink dispenser or punch bowl. Add the cranberry juice cocktail, pineapple chunks with juice, and sprite. Gently stir to combine. Add plenty of ice. Serve over ice and garnish with slices of oranges and cranberries! So festive for the holidays!

enjoy the passion of model trains,” Jim Stabley, one of the organizers of the Whistle Stop Train Show, told Webb Weekly. “When Christmas time comes around you can see model train layouts in many homes, and it is something for the entire family to enjoy and our show helps to celebrate this great hobby. In a sense, train layouts are a sort of symbol of the Christmas season. So, come out and see a lot of great trains and train related merchandise.”

Holiday Exhibit at Taber Museum Will Feature Quilts, Silver and Jade

A

‘Holiday Jewel Box at a County Gem: Quilts, Silver and Jade at the Taber’ will be the theme of this year’s holiday display at the Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society. The exhibit will open on Friday, December 4 with an evening preview from 6:00-7:00 pm for members and for the public from 7-8:30pm. The Community Room of the museum will shine and sparkle with the shimmering beauty of silver, the exotic splendor of jade, and the remarkably intricate blending of fabric and lace in Wendy Etzel’s award-

winning quilts. The quilts feature depictions of some of the homes on Millionaires’ Row as well as quilts that embrace the Christmas and winter celebrations, many of them incorporating the traditional colors of red and green. Wendy Etzel was captivated by the wonderful old mansions that dominated the area. An afternoon quilting class ignited the spark that has guided Wendy these past 45 years. As a professional quilting teacher she has conducted classes across the USA, and has crossed the borders into Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1994 her

first book, Houses of Cloth, featuring several of Williamsport’s historic homes was chosen as the best new book at the Houston Quilt Market. Continuing as an author with a love of architecture, Log by Log featured primitive, folk-like log cabins that were a featured episode on HGTV. Fabric furniture with shelves became the focus in The Collectibles Quilt and lastly The Kite Revue, a return to more traditional design. The quilts will be enhanced with a stunning collection of silver and jade from the Eccles Hall Collection. The silver will include a sugar sifter in its original presentation box and with documentation that it once belonged to Queen Victoria, English hallmarked hot water urns which are fully two foot tall,

four-armed candelabrum, an example of Egyptian silver depicting desert life with a Palm Tree and camel, a silver depiction of ‘The Thinker’ by Rodin, teapots and a number of exotic serving pieces. The silver on display will feature objets from the United States, England, Scotland, Mexico, Egypt and Russia. The jade will feature the traditional green jade, but also examples of white, Peach Blossom, and Muttonfat jade. The exhibit will continue until Saturday, January 16. In concert with the exhibit, the Third Annual Ornament Sale will be held. The ornaments will be made by some of the most talented artists in our area- a number returning for the third year in a row. In addition to their beautiful ornaments, a number of the artists will have ‘mini popup galleries’ of their other creative works including jewelry, sculpture, handbags, pottery, and fiber wearables. In this difficult year, this may be the only show in which the artists will participate and so, we ask you to consider supporting these local artists by coming and considering for purchase examples of their artistry for holiday gifts (or, of course, for yourself!)! Light refreshments will be served, with face masks required. Social distancing is strongly urged. Ample parking is to be found behind the museum or on the street. Pre-registration is requested. For further information, please call the museum at 570-326-3326.

smart, budget-friendly way to experiment with trends and new silhouettes. Speaking of experimentation, if you’re feeling very adventurous try pairing a flannel with a printed sweater vest, like argyle, or fair isle print. But be careful, too much pattern can overwhelm an outfit and lean toward more chaotic than eclectic. If you’re sticking to solid-colored sweater vests, then try switching things up with a flannel shirt dress and knit vest. If you’re looking to invest in a classic shirtdress to wear now and into the holiday season, check out Boden’s Elspeth shirtdress in red and ivory check. It features an elegant bow at the neck, which you can tie over a crew or v-neck sweater vest. If you’re looking for a bargain, then check out Uniqlo’s

A-line long-sleeved dress that comes with pockets! For a more refined, ladylike version of a flannel and knitwear, try a flannel dress with a cropped cardigan. J.Crew Factory’s ruffle-neck peasant dress isn’t technically rendered in flannel, but with its black and red plaid evokes the sense of flannel while having a more polished fit than a standard shirtdress. Whether you go with a loose flannel dress or a more fitted version of any plaid dress, pair it with a cropped cardigan like ModCloth’s dream of the crop cardigan that comes in 6 shades from size XS to 4x. Cropped cardigans are a great way to define the waist and provide you with some coverage without feeling bulky. If a more ladylike look is just not on

your agenda this season, go with a menswear-inspired outfit pairing your flannel shirt with trousers and an oversized coat. Eloquii’s funnel-neck coat in both camel and magenta is fully lined and has a tie waist belt. You can tie that up in the back and leave the coat open to show off your favorite flannel shirt. When winter rolls around, cinch it tight and flip the collar up to keep you cozy, yet chic. For pants, check out H&M’s “Dress Pants” section, which features suiting pants, wide leg paperbag waist pants, and flared legged pants. You can complete your look with loafers, or if you’re looking to push the style envelope, try a pair of white sneakers. If you’re feeling nostalgic for that 90’s

your pastel button-down with colorful denim, or a matching light-colored chino. Finish this look with a heeled bootie and tailored blazer. A great way to layer flannel is under a sweater vest. You can wear your go-to flannel with a cable-knit sweater vest and standard jeans. You can find some high-quality sweater vests at stores like Banana Republic and Lands’ End, but I would first look to thrift or vintage stores. Or check out sites like Etsy, Poshmark, and Threadup for secondhand versions, because while sweater vests are trending this season, they may not be that popular in upcoming seasons. It’s always a good rule of thumb to be weary of investing too much in trendy items. Buying secondhand is a

flannel feel, but don’t want to look like an overgrown teenager, style a colorful flannel with an all-black ensemble of a tee-shirt and jeans. Crewneck, short or long-sleeved tee tucked into a pair of high-waist black jeans topped with a flannel shirt, or better yet, shirt jacket with flats is an easy, flattering, yet stylish casual look. And, you probably already have all of these pieces in your closet. Speaking of shirt jackets, for any outfit consider flannel as your outerwear option. American Eagle has a very cozy-looking oversized button-up jacket in cream plaid that would look great with a minimal white shirt and black pants. Or borrow

from the boys with Eddie Bauer’s flannel sherpa-lined shirt jacket over a chambray shirt, leggings, and hiking boots. If you’re in the market for something a bit more dressed-up, check out Nordstrom Rack’s plaid notch collar trench coat. Like the dress mentioned above, it’s not a flannel piece, but the print gives you a visual feel of flannel, while being a bit more formal. You don’t just have to consign flannel to the top half of your outfit, or as outwear. Flannel also comes in skirt form. your Christmas, and New Year’s Day outfit. Whether or not you actually sleep in them, a flannel set of loungewear is comfy, cozy, and functional. You can opt for a traditional plaid set or have some fun with novelty prints like pinecones from Target or a cityscape print over at Aerie. You can totally accessorize a pajama with delicate gold jewelry, a fuzzy grandpa cardigan, and fair isle print slippers from TOMS! While flannels have always maintained a spot in the rotation for fall and winter wardrobes, they haven’t always felt fresh or stylish. Hopefully, the outfit ideas above will help you re-think flannel for this upcoming season and create comfortable and fashionable looks for whatever the rest of the year and next have in store.

For a more contemporary take, check out DKNY’s pleated midi plaid skirts at Macy’s. They have several versions of plaid pull-on skirts to choose from, all of which can be styled with a classic sweater set and heeled loafer. Or go for a more edgy look, with a graphic tee, leather jacket, and thick-soled boots. Whichever style you choose, steer clear of mini plaid flannel skirts to avoid any “school girl” cliches. Lastly, one of the most overlooked flannel looks this time of year are a pair of flannel pajamas. Since the holiday season will be fairly mellow, consider PJs for

disastrous fire of mysterious origin in a double dwelling at 1019 Louisa Street about 2:30 o’clock this morning came near causing the death of the occupants. Walter, wife and daughter, Grace, the latter 13 years of age, all jumped 18 feet from a second story window and escaped with minor injuries. The baby, 19 months old, was rescued by means of a string of bed clothes which the father lowered to the yard below. The family, all of whom slept in the rear room, were awakened by the cries of the family cat, which

was crouching at the foot of the children’s bed. The flames had already enveloped the stairway and the window was the only means of escape. The house was completely gutted, entailing a loss of about $1,000, fully insured by the owner, Charles Ephlin. Mr. Williams: loss will probably reach $1,000 of which $399 is covered by insurance. The household contents are practically a total loss, including the family’s clothing. The fire presumably started in the chimney of the kitchen stove and burned along the floor beneath the room where the family slept. The smoke poured through the bed chamber

At the time of the escape no one was aware of the fire. Robert G. Guise, who resides next door, was awakened and he sent word to the fire department. A policeman, who saw the fire from Grier Street, was the next on the scene. Mrs. Williams and her children were cared for by the Guise family. The fire company including headquarters. O, Cos. 2,3,6 and the Hays truck were remarkably quick in their response. In 10 minutes after the receipt of the alarm they were on the scene. The wind was a veritable gale at the time, and they checked and controlled the flames rapidly. As to the origin of the fire there is no direct evidence for the evidence of any theory. Mr. Williams sustained a severe cut and bruise to his knee as the result of his leap from the window and required several stitches and was treated by Dr. Konkle. The daughter, Grace, suffered a bruise to the face and Mrs. Williams was uninjured.

through a register in the floor. Mr. Williams and his wife as soon as aroused plugged this shut with a pillow, they opened a door leading to the stairway but were met with a great puff of flame and smoke which blew out the lighted lamp and left the room in darkness. By closing the door again, the fire was kept back just long enough to enable them to jump from the window. Mrs. Williams was the first to make the leap. She lowered herself to her arm’s length and then let go. The ground was frozen, but she was practically uninjured. She called for her husband to throw the daughter down to her, but Mr. Williams with great presence of mind told the daughter that he would assist her in making the jump. He then tied the baby boy in a bed sheet and lowered him to the mother’s arms after throwing two trunks out the window he was obliged to jump for his life as the flames were already burning in the room. Not one stopped to dress, and all of their clothes were burned.

he average person will spend more than 50 years in the employment sector. As retirement draws closer, many professionals begin to daydream about giving up the commute and having more time to pursue their personal interests. Even if planning for retirement has been many years in the making, it can take some time for a person to become acclimated to having less income. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “older households,” which are defined as those run by someone age 65 and older, spent an average of $45,756 in 2016, or roughly $3,800 a month. That’s roughly $1,000 less than the monthly average spent by typical American households. Housing, transportation, health care, and food are some of the biggest bills retirees will have to account for. Aiming to have savings in addition to any other retirement income or government subsidy coming in to cover that amount is a step in the right direction. Retirees can make their money go further if they take inventory of their

spending and make some cuts where possible. • Know where your money is going. It’s impossible to save without knowing what your expenses are each month. Many people are surprised to learn how much little things add up over the course of a month. For example, spending $4 for a take-out coffee each day can quickly become an expensive luxury. Add all expenses and see where you can trim, especially if there’s a deficit each month. • Consider extra health care. In the United States, Medicare participants can choose Medicare Supplement Insurance plans to help reduce out-of-pocket health care costs. Medicare Parts A and B only cover some of your health care costs. Supplemental insurance can cover some of the costs not covered by original medicare, like copayments, deductibles and coinsurance, according to AARP. • Pare down on possessions. Take inventory of what you have and scale back where possible. If you are no longer commuting to work, you may be able to become a one-car household.

COSTS

Downsizing your residence can help seniors avoid spending too much of their retirement time and money maintaining their homes. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Take advantage of the many discounts that are offered to seniors. Retirees can usually save on restaurants, travel, groceries, and much more by simply shopping on specific days or verifying their age when checking out. • Purchase less expensive life insurance. According Cheapism, a site that advises consumers about how to be more frugal, the chief purpose of life insurance is to

replace income to ensure the financial security of dependents in the event of death. Retirees may have no dependents and little income. Therefore, a large life insurance policy may not be necessary, especially if you’ve already set aside funds to cover funeral costs. • Pay off a mortgage. Housing is many people’s most substantial expense. Paying off a mortgage can free up more money each month and allow retirees to spend their golden years doing as they please. As retirement nears, adults can employ various strategies to reduce their monthly expenses.

prescription medications but also overthe-counter, or OTC, drugs, supplements and even vitamins. Use a notes app on your smartphone to create a running list of your medications so you can easily access it during doctor’s appointments. • Read all labels. Prescription drugs and OTC medications list potential side effects in different ways. Each prescription medication comes with a lengthy list of potential side effects, while OTC labels cite potential side effects in the “Warnings” section on their labels. Familiarize yourself with all potential side effects of a given medication prior to taking it. Err on the side of caution and wait to speak with your physician before taking an OTC medication you’re unfamiliar with. • Order all prescriptions from the same pharmacy. Ordering all prescriptions from the same pharmacy makes it easy to access all prescriptions. Pharmacists can look up all prescriptions and crosscheck interactions that may result from taking certain medications at the same time. This safety net can be useful and convenient. • Utilize online resources. The Drug Interactions checker at www.drugs.com/ drug_interactions.html is a convenient way to learn about the potential interactions that can result when taking more than one medication or even mixing it with certain foods or beverages. Drug interactions can be deadly, which only underscores the importance of being careful when taking more than one medication at a time.

undreds of millions of people across the globe rely on medications for their survival. In fact, the percentage of people using prescription medications may surprise people who work outside the health care industry. According to the National Center for Health Statistics’ National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015-16, nearly 46 percent of the population of the United States used prescription drugs in 2015-16. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that prescription drug use is similar in Canada, where the Canadian Health Measures Survey found that roughly two-thirds of adults between the ages of 40 and 79 used at least one prescription drug in a 30-day period. Prescription drugs may be vital to many people’s survival, but they also can prove deadly if mismanaged. That’s especially true for people taking more than one medication. Taking multiple medications each day may be necessary, but it’s equally necessary that people taking more than one medication every day take steps to avoid drug interactions. • Discuss all medications with each of your doctors. Primary care physicians and specialists should be kept in the loop regarding which medications their patients are taking. Patients should never assume their doctors know every medication they’re taking. When prescribed a new medication, mention to your prescribing doctor what else you are taking. Include

Seven Ways to Save More for Retirement

R

etirement seems like a lifetime away for young professionals. But as careers advance, families are started and milestones are met, retirement can start to feel a lot closer. A 2014 Gallup poll indicates that most Americans now retire at age 62. That is a good starting point when planning your retirement. The earlier you start establishing savings goals and putting plans in motion, the more likely you will be to retire on time without having to worry about money. These strategies can help you save more for retirement years. 1. Raise … what raise? If you’re lucky enough to get a salary increase at work, direct the extra money into retirement savings accounts and act like the raise never happened. You won’t miss the extra money since you were not accustomed to earning it, and redirecting it into retirement savings can go a long way toward procuring your financial future. 2. Max out deposit limits. By depositing the maximum allowable amount into your retirement

accounts each year, you can grow your retirement savings quickly and earn considerably more interest on your money over the life of the account. 3. Allocate your tax refund. Elect to apply your tax refund to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA. 4. Take advantage of employers’ offers to match retirement contributions. Many employers will match 401(k) contributions if you save enough to qualify. This is an easy way to save without having to put in any extra money out of your own pocket. Make sure you’re vested in the 401(k) plan so that the employer contributions can be taken with you if you leave a job.

7. Make calculated cuts. Think about which items you can live without and dedicate what you would spend on those expenditures to retirement. For example, calculate the difference between buying a new car and a certified pre-owned model. Deposit the savings into retirement. Can you skip a vacation this year and do a staycation instead? The Roving Sportsman… It Finally Happened in the Closing Minutes! By Jon Pries when coupled with the numerous bear hunting

F

seasons throughout the fall. So, what does that mean for the average bear hunter? Well, for many reasons, it still means low odds for taking one of these animals in Pennsylvania. Truth be told, the majority of hunters will spend a lifetime of hunting for black bear and never achieve success. I will be the first to admit that I have been very lucky over the years since I have had the good fortune to take 5 black bears in Pennsylvania, the last three being males — or boars — and all weighing in excess of 350 pounds. Still, today

or decades, the black bear population throughout Pennsylvania has been on a slow, but ever-increasing rise. The numbers today exceed 20,000, making our state a popular destination for bear hunters. Not only are the numbers of animals impressive, but the size of some have often exceeded 300 pounds, with animals every year being taken in the 400-to-500-pound category. Yes, Pennsylvania truly offers hunters great odds of taking one of these animals, especially

I maintain my passion for bear hunting. Not only are they elusive and a great prize when one is lucky enough to get one, but they are also extremely good eating! It has been a number of years since I last shot a bear in Pennsylvania, and prior to this year’s seasons I vowed to spend the time necessary to achieve success. To that end, I eagerly accepted an invitation to hunt on the farm of a friend in northern Lycoming County. He has just over 100 acres of mixed fields and woodlands that he manages for deer, turkey and black bear. His fields included two one-acre plots of field corn that he normally leaves standing throughout the winter to help wild game have a food source through the winter months. But this year, the nearby black bears were continually raiding his corn fields at night and devastating the crop. The hope was to catch one of these critters at first

or last light as they were entering or exiting the fields on their nightly feasts. It was on the next to last night of the archery bear season that, with 7 minutes of legal shooting time left, I watched a large male black bear ease into the far end of the corn field where I was not sitting! The following night — the last night of the season — I was there patiently waiting for him, but he never showed before dark. It was the same waiting game during the weeklong muzzleloader season, with the same lack of shooting opportunity during legal shooting hours, even though the bears were dining on corn in the wee hours of the morning. The three-day junior and senior season produced equal results. No bear sightings during legal shooting hours. Finally, the statewide regular firearms season opened up, which included the first Sunday

he appeared out of nowhere! The edge of the woodlot was lined with evergreens, yet even in the closing minutes of legal shooting light, the pitch-black color of the old black bear stood out vividly! He slowly ambled into the grass field and headed toward the standing corn. I snapped the rifle to my shoulder as I took off the safety and centered the crosshairs of the scope behind his huge shoulder. The rifle cracked and I heard the “thwack” of a good hit, as the bear let out a bellow and sunk to the ground. With the crack of the rifle, my chin slowly eased up from my chest, my eyes gently opened, and I realized that my daydream had not become a reality. I was not really disappointed. It had been a good season and I had a year ahead of me to lay out my plans for success next fall — I hope you had better luck than me!

Saturday, Sunday and Monday all came and went, and then Tuesday, the final day opened at 6:37 a.m. and ran until 5:13 p.m. With high hopes, I climbed into the stand at 5:30 and watched the sun break the eastern skyline, while as the day brightened; there was no sign of any bear movement nearby. Throughout the day, I stayed alert, never certain just when a bear might appear and knowing that the chances of one showing up increased as the hours approached darkness. It was 4:50 when a small buck, then two does and finally three yearlings entered the adjoining clover patch and began munching on the clover and various grasses. The time kept clicking away. 5 o’clock. 5:05. Suddenly, as if by magic, at 5:10, with just 3 minutes of legal shooting time remaining,

Treestands: A Widespread Deer Hunting Practice

I

was reminded last week as we made last minute preparations for the rifle deer season just how popular hunting from treestands has become. My wife and I helped my son erect a new twoman metal treestand in a goodsized tree overlooking a welltraveled ravine. We used a fourwheeler and hoisted the heavy stand up the side of the tree as

we attached ladder sections as it went up. Metal braces were added, and straps were tightened making for a very solid and secure stand almost 20 feet up the tree. Now, like a lot of other hunters, we will see how much our efforts paid off as we progress through the next weeks of rifle and muzzleloader Ken hunting seasons. Hunter I’m not aware of any surveys

freedom of movement without spooking your quarry. Of course, treestands vary considerably in their makeup and enclosed stands allow for a generous amount of movement while open stands like the one my son just put up are more limited. That being said, however, if the stand is high enough and offers some concealment some careful movement is possible. The movement factor in the previous paragraph adds weight to another important point about the benefits of hunting from a treestand especially if it’s an enclosed stand. Many of today’s “treestands” are built to stand on their own-no tree needed and those enclosed stands offer comfortable seating, windows

that open and close and you can even install a portable heater. That kind of comfort can go a long way in bitter cold temperatures if you are out from daylight to dark. Another big plus to using some kind of treestand is the human scent factor; anything we can do to limit our scent, or at least control it somewhat, probably adds to our chances of a successful hunt. At least being up higher may help in controlling how much and where our scent is going. Of course, not every hunter has the benefit of using a treestand especially if you hunt public property or on someone else’s property. Not having the use of some kind of treestand during the

MURRAY

COLLISION

archery season can be a limiting factor but that’s not necessarily the case in the gun seasons. Sure, treestands offer a lot of benefits but a good many deer were taken over the years by simply finding a good spot to stand or a good log to sit on while you watched. My wife and I sometimes hunt on a friend’s property and we have had several successful outings by simply setting up in or around a tree that has fallen; the branches provide reasonably comfortable seating, and the branches provide stable rests for our rifles when taking aim. Simply adding some branches here and there provides more stable gun rests. Check the wind direction when you set up and try to set up where your scent won’t mess up your hunt.

or studies that have been done regarding how many deer are actually taken with the use of treestands, but it’s very obvious that more hunters now hunt from some kind of treestand now than ever before and you can bet success rates are high. There are some good reasons why treestands are so popular with one of the most obvious being the greatly increased visibility; the more territory you can keep a watch over the greater your chances of getting a shot. Archery hunters using recurve or compound bows are still greatly limited in range even from a stand, but rifle and muzzleloader hunters benefit a lot from the additional visibility. Another good reason to consider hunting from a treestand is it allows for a bit more

the fall sports season could be greatly magnified as the winter sports of basketball and wrestling take their acts indoors. The concerns raised about senior athletes missing their football and soccer seasons struck an emotional chord. I am personally happy that those young people had some kind of a season to remember. The PIAA has given the green light for winter sports teams to begin their pre-season practice schedules, with each individual school district having the final say as to how those practices will be conducted. Basketball players and wrestlers are just as eager to have a season as were those athletes playing fall sports. Here’s hoping that comes to fruition. If fans are to be permitted to witness the action, there no doubt will be plenty of restrictions placed in their path. Similar to those Mudville fans who were so dismayed when the mighty Casey struck out, it is going to be very difficult to maintain social distancing for a wrestler attempting a take-down or a basketball player blocking a shot. In a similar vein, as we approach the Christmas shopping season, I have another question for your consideration. Remember all the local small businesses that you’ve asked for years and years to donate and sponsor your sports teams, clubs, school events and organizations? Well, they are now calling in a favor — answer the call!

Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner became the first District Four tennis player to capture a state title when she won the Class AA gold a few weeks ago. Girls’ soccer teams from Southern Columbia and Bloomsburg, and the boys’ team from Lewisburg all were crowned state champions in their respective classifications. On the gridiron, the steamrolling Southern Columbia Tigers celebrated their 28th District Four crown in the past 30 years by advancing to (and probably winning) another state championship appearance last weekend in Hershey. Closer to home the amazing Jersey Shoe Bulldogs took a #1 Class AAAA ranking into last weekend’s Hershey meeting with powerful defending state champion Thomas Jefferson. And let’s not forget the Muncy Indians’ statewide statement when they gave favored Steelton-Highspire all they could handle in a 50-43 loss in the state playoffs. Muncy’s season play earned them a number 6 ranking among Pennsylvania Class A teams. Back to the original question, yes, those games did take place; but is certainly a shame that when so many area teams made District Four proud, so few fans were permitted to witness the action. As this is being written I have no idea of what the post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas COVID limitation could become. The hullabaloo raised about the playing, or non-playing, of
