I

t’s a couple of days before Christmas, and all through the house, there is so much stirring, I hope the cat gets the mouse. I’m sure there’s a lot of this going on all over our little neck of Penn’s Woods as the kids are now home from college, family members have traveled home for the holidays, and the hustle and bustle of last-minute gift shopping and meal preparations are in full swing. Let me be the first to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and most joyous holiday season. Please take the time to come together as family, friends, and loved ones to enjoy this most amazing season. Please find the good in everything and everyone. Check all political conversations at the door until after the New Year. Make sure you give the cook or cooks a great big hug and say thank you for the amazing meal. Last but not least, if you don’t have something nice to say, keep it to yourself. This applies whether you’re sitting at the family table, are on social media, or your lips

are moving in general. If there are family members, friends, or neighbors that choose to be alone for whatever reason, make sure that holiday spirit in the form of that special plate of leftovers with double dessert and/or a phone call find their way. This is so much needed in our world of today. Please take the time to share that special Christmas spirit. Whether it be through prayer, the gift of time, or donation with a complete stranger. This can be with someone locally or a person halfway around the world. Luke 2:11, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” These words announcing the arrival of baby Jesus define the Miracle of Christmas. This begins the greatest father-son story ever written. From Immanuel’s humble birth and resting peacefully in a manger to his final hours of suffering and crucifixion, it is truly a story about God’s love. Through this infinite love of man, God provides all of us that shining

star of guidance and forgiveness through acceptance. As we celebrate Christmas as Christians, we must share this love with our fellow man no matter of their beliefs, Jim Webb, Jr. road traveled, or life chosen. Within the blueprint provided, it is clearly up to us to provide unconditional love and respect for our fellow man, not mortal judgment. There has never been a time in the chronological history labeled AD that this has been more important. There are forces at work that only want to divide and create hatred. The best thing we can do to improve our world is to unconditionally love and show respect for our fellow man. With those thoughts in mind, if you are not a Christian, I ask you to please never be offended by the words “Merry Christmas.” It is my religion’s way to seasonally greet one another in an attempt to spread joy and peace in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is not predicated on the other’s religious beliefs or ever

intended to be anything but positive. If anyone from any other religion greeted me with a message of religious celebration in the name of good, I would never find offense. I would be honored for the sharing and inclusion into another’s beliefs. If I did not understand the message, I would probably just nod my head and smile. If I did understand the message, I would probably repeat it back to them out of respect and smile. Incidentally, just because you love and show respect for your fellow man doesn’t mean you agree with all or any of their beliefs. This, as always, is my last column for the year. Next week Editor Steph will have page 2 as we celebrate local organizations that do so much with our annual charity pages. Before I finish up, a reminder in the pages ahead to check out all the names of the amazing boys and girls that entered our Christmas Fun Coloring Contest. And oh yes, the winners are in there, congratulations to all! Again, I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and safe travels throughout the holiday season. God Bless America.

was the Friday before Christmas and Steph is still a disorganized mess! I kid, I kid…kinda…sorta…I swear I almost have everything done! OK, OK, fine — in reality, I do not, in fact, have everything done, but I’ll get there, I always do! One thing I do have done is the winners of the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships Christmas Fun Coloring Contest! It was another tough year of judging! Narrowing down hundreds of entries to just 30 winners isn’t an easy task, but luckily I had help! Tinsel McJingle, Freddy Gumdrop and Sparky Tinselbottom were amazingly helpful this year in not only helping me pick the winners, but keeping

ust in the Saint Nick of time, the high school basketball season has returned in full swing. If you’re like me, you need to get out of the house on these long dark nights. Go cheer on your favorite team. If you can’t make it to the game or live out of town, Webb Weekly Live teaming up with Hoopers Only TV will have the action available at your fingertips. Our area’s best players, rivalry games, and school spirit are on display for the world to see. Play by play man, Paul Bo, will be by my side to set me up and make me look good. Jimmy Webb will be providing the key statistics, and the Sun Gazette’s Doc Massey will keep us updated on everything that is high school hoops across the West Branch Valley. A tip of my Santa hat to Cam Crossley, producer, and Big Mike, along with Isaac on camera. It’s great to have the team back together again. Thank you to long-time Williamsport official scorer Kenny Myers, who keeps me up to date on all that is Williamsport Millionaire basketball.

He was the first to let me know the Loyalsock versus Williamsport game would be held at the Magic Dome on Thursday, December 23rd. The game was originally scheduled for Lycoming College. We will again be featuring the Lancers and Millionaires as they square off in the City rivalry at 7:30 p.m. We’ll be on air with pregame at 7:15 p.m. The following week we will feature the Williamsport Christmas Tournament, which is simply one of the best holiday hoop traditions in the state. Coach Allen Taylor’s Millionaires will take on Paul International Academy out of Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, December 28th, airtime 7:15 p.m. The championship and consolation games will be the next day at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. We will again have the Millionaires versus an opponent and time to be determined. Games of the week can be found at webbweeklylive.com, Facebook, and YouTube. Hopefully, you get up to the Magic Dome and watch them live and follow up with the replay, as all matchups are archived. A schedule of upcoming games is also available on our website.

Gazette and Bulletin December 26, 1941 Christmas 1941 – No Blackout of Bethlehem’s Star Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

C

hristmas 1941 comes to a world where there is scant peace, where men search the skies for portents — not of joy but of death and where men of goodwill are, as were the simple Judean shepherds long ago, “sore afraid.” Happily, there is no blackout of the Christmas star here — no shrieking sirens interrupt the joyful music of Christmastide, no bursting of bombs. Yet, our rejoicing is not without an undertone of fear. All are hoping for the best, anticipating eventual triumph of the right, but not without the realization that the future is clouded. The spirit of Christmas, however, does not die — not in any land, not among the adherents of any creed, not forever in any human heart. For those of Christian faith,

Christmas marks the birth of One who counseled “love your enemies.” Christmas has reverential names in all languages. The spirit of Christmas is abroad the narrower boundaries of religion and race fall away. “Glory to God in the Highest!” sang the angels and good will toward men. Ancient and profound, this emotion is in all along in every tongue, in every creed, the spirit of Christmas. Although clouded by the hates of war, twisted and battered by men’s efforts to accommodate the divine message to their own ideals, the song which the herald angels sang over Bethlehem remain the goal toward which an enlightened humanity has always striven. No darkness has ever been black enough to extinguish the wonderful light that has kindled that night long ago in a stable in Bethlehem.

generally like to end a year with reflection and prediction. This week I want to highlight some of my articles from this past year, and next week I will take a stab at what we might expect in 2022. First off, I want to thank all those who have spoken to me personally or written comments to let me know your opinions about my articles. Feedback is tremendously helpful as it lets me know what stories resonate with our readers. One way that I get feedback is from the number of reader hits that show up on the Webb Weekly website (www.webbweekly.com). In 2021, I did 43 County Hall Corner articles, 13 LION articles, and two cover stories. These totaled nearly 25,000 reads which I deeply appreciate.

Five stories stood out for me personally, which I will list in chronological order. The first was the March 31st cover story on Noah Kriger, a second-grade student at Cochran Elementary School who spearheaded an area litter cleanup on Earth Day, Saturday, April 17th, in lieu of presents for his birthday. I cannot remember when I had more fun doing an interview and being inspired at the same time as with little Noah. The article “A Wolf in Wolf ’s Language,” published in the

April 7th edition, discussed the two proposed Pennsylvania Constitutional Amendments that would limit a governor’s emergency powers. I wrote how deceptive the wording was of these amendments, and apparently, it was quite popular because it had the most number of reads of any article I ever wrote, almost 3,000. The second most hits I ever received was on Jeff Hutchins, Lycoming County’s Director of Public Safety, which I featured as a LION article in the April 28th edition. Hutch, as he is popularly known, has possibly the hardest job in the county given the vast responsibilities of the Public Safety Department. If Noah Kriger was one of the most inspiring persons I ever interviewed, Hutch would be very high on the list of most respected ones. It was an honor to write the cover story for the July 7th edition, which featured the 75th anniversary of

the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company. We honor vets, which they richly deserve, but first-responders are the community ground-pounders who should be honored as well. The strains on volunteer fire companies get greater and greater each year, which accounts for the fact that they are becoming a vanishing breed. This is what inspired “God Made a Volunteer Firefighter,” using Paul Harvey for my inspiration for the December 8th edition. Those who might have missed these articles, or hundreds of others that I have written over the past few years, can access them on this paper’s website, webbweekly. com. And if you have thoughts, comments, or ideas on my features or wish to suggest a new topic, you can reach me by email at lionwebbweekly@gmail.com. Have a very Merry Christmas one and all.

Andrea’s Home Cookin…

Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays!

A

s I sit here, the week before Christmas, there are nine days until the big day. Yesterday, when I woke up, and my phone said December 15th, I had to do a double-take. For a few seconds, I really thought my phone was wrong. I thought, “There is no way it’s the fifteenth of December already.” How was this possible? I still had cookies

to make, gifts to wrap, and last-minute shopping to do. This is my most favorite time of the year, and leading up to Christmas day, there is so much prep involved. It’s no wonder there is so much stress and depression this time of year. I don’t let myself get all worked up. Everything always gets done, and I take it one day at a time, soaking up each day as

it is here and gone so quickly. As a kid, I felt like it always took forever! Our biggest worry was wondering if Santa would miss our house or not getting the toy you had your Andrea heart set on all DeMcElroy cember. Christmas Eve was always so magical. Even at my age, it still is. I still like to look up at the night sky on Christmas Eve, picture the Christmas star, and what the three kings followed on that Christmas night. How bright it must have lit up the sky. Of course, I always picture Santa’s sleigh way up high, flying across the moon, just waiting to pop into children’s homes who are anxiously awaiting his arrival. I don’t remember how old I was, but I had to be at least six or seven because I know it was our house on Roosevelt Ave., and we had lived there a few years. One night we got pizza — Park pizza, to be exact. Our home was a ranch home, and our kitchen table was set facing our living room. It had a big picture window, and a small window

There was a bright shining red light that looked to be up on a rooftop on a neighbor’s house down the street. excitement. Could it be!? Now, I don’t believe it was Christmas Eve, but it could have been. I just remember my dad saying, “You better be good! Santa Claus is watching you!” I truly believed it was Rudolph and Santa checking in. This is a very vivid memory to me because it was magical to a seven-year-old little girl. I remember where I was, what I was eating, and I can still see it out the window in my head. I’m tellin’ ya — it was Rudy! My seven-year-old daughter Kenzy would be the same way. She is just so excited for Santa. She loves the magic of Christmas and Christmas lights! Kenzy is a lot like her momma. My son Tyler will be thirteen this July. This year it happened, and he asked, ‘the question.’ The dreaded question as a parent. It can’t be, he was just putting milk and cookies out for Santa, and I captured it in a photo last Christmas Eve night. I knew in my heart of hearts; it could be the last year. We told him that there is no one single Santa. We are the people who fill your stockings and put gifts under the tree, just as our parents did for us, and

their parents did for them, and you will do for your kids someday. Santa are many people who keep the spirit of Christmas alive! He lives in our hearts. Santa is the magic and love of giving to others. He teaches children to believe in something they can’t see or touch. Throughout your life, you will need this to not only believe in yourself, but in your family, in your friends, and in God. You’ll need to believe in things you can’t hold in your hands. Santa is

Christmas Peanut Butter Blossoms Ingredients: • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

• 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter • 1/2 cup butter, softened • 1 egg • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • Additional granulated sugar or colored sprinkles • About 36 Hershey Kisses, unwrap Directions: Heat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, beat 1/2 cup granulated sugar, the brown sugar, peanut butter, butter and egg with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon, until well blended. Stir in flour, baking soda and baking powder until dough forms. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in additional granulated sugar or colored sprinkles. On ungreased cookie sheets, place about 2 inches apart. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Immediately press 1 milk chocolate candy in center of each cookie. Place back in over for one minute. Remove from cookie sheets to cooling rack. *Our Santa loves plain peanut butter cookies too. So Mrs. Claus always makes sure to make him plain ones as well. Just roll in sugar, and do a cross with a fork. Bake 8-10 minutes.*

love, magic, hope, and happiness. We are on his team, and now you are too. He took this way better than we thought. I probably took it harder than him, haha. He then asked about our elf, the Tooth fairy, and the Easter Bunny. It was all or nothing! He loves now that he can help move Charlie, our elf, around, and we told him that Dad and I have fun finding him when we take turns hiding him. We just asked him to keep everything quiet for his sister. He has done great and is having fun with our family buddy, Charlie. At least this year, we won’t have to stay up till midnight waiting for the little fart to fall asleep. But, we did good getting him to believe until almost the age of thirteen. I have never stopped believing. I still love the magic of Christmas and Santa. You are never too old to watch the sky for Santa or search for the Christmas star. Have a wonderful holiday week filled with love, good food, family, friends, and COOKIES! Merry Christmas from my family to yours!

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

D

EAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa

Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON. 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man

Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world, which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa

God Loves You

T

he message of the good news of Jesus Christ, the story of Christmas, begins with this truth: God loves you. It is a most amazing truth. It defines your very existence. You were made to live forever in God’s love. Read that sentence again; You were made to live forever in God’s love. That truth is the source from which your life flows. Our beautiful river, the west branch of the mighty Susquehanna, rises just outside the borough of Carrolltown

in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. It travels for approximately 220 miles before flowing through our scenic valley. If you follow our river back to its starting point, you will always arrive at Carrolltown, Pennsylvania. Always. My friend, your life rises out of God’s forever love for you. No matter how far you travel, regardless of how much time goes by, the source of your life will always be the forever love of God. It is a most extraordinary thought. The God of all creation loves you. He

Faith Conversations…

loves me. Forever. I’m not sure I can get my arms around it. My mind seems incapable of containing the full majesty of it. When I try, I find myself grasping for words and feeling much like King David Tim when he wrote, “Such Hartzell knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.” Psalm 139:6. God knew it would be too much for us, so instead of simply saying how much He loves us, He turned His words into flesh by sending His one and only Son to live with us – and to die for us. It is the highest expression of love we humans can comprehend. If you’re a parent, you understand what I’m saying. Jesus said the greatest expression of love is to lay down our life for our friend – and then He did it. For a man who had no children, that statement was true. But as a father, I can assure you; there is one greater expression of love: laying down the life of your child for a friend. I have two sons and a daughter-inlaw. If I were ever called upon to lay down my life for you, I pray God

would give me the courage and the strength to do so. But know this, if I am ever called upon to lay down one of my children’s lives for you, well, I’m afraid you would be out of luck. As a father, I would rather die myself than choose to have my son or daughter die for you. Ask any parent, and they’ll tell you the same. There is no higher expression of love. That’s why God sent His Son. He wanted you and me to be able to comprehend, in the most extravagant way possible, just how much He loves us. The celebration of Christmas is a lot of things. It is trees and lights and presents and Santa and shredded wrapping paper and, well, all of the wonderful traditions we will enjoy in the days to come. It’s all good. But know this, Christmas itself is only one thing; it is God’s declaration being heralded throughout the vast expanses of time and space, “I love you!” If you are not living in His love, then my guess is that you have traveled up a tributary, an enticing brook that fooled you into thinking it was the source of life. There are a lot of tricky little tributaries out there. They look promising, but they always dry up or peter out. They always disappoint. Some people follow the tributary

lieve it? If you are willing to believe, then you will be traveling in the deep and unending source of love – a love giving true meaning and purpose to life. Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. Paul wrote, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Jesus died for us.” Romans 5:8. John wrote, “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in

his name, he gave the right to become children of God . . .” John 1:12. Even before we were born, God had already determined His love for us. You can’t earn it, and you can’t lose it. He loves you. Period. He always has, and He always will. You are His child. My Christmas prayer for you: “Heavenly Father, please bless my dear friend with the knowledge of Your full and unconditional love. Allow their heart to receive it and to fully rest in it. Allow their mind to find peace in Your mercy and grace. If anything stands in the way, any guilt or regret or confusion or bitterness or

sin, then please help them to acknowledge it freely and openly to You. As they do, let Your mercy and grace flow abundantly until they are fully captivated by the strong and deep current of Your love. Quiet the voices of rejection. Calm the storms of fear. Clear away the fog of doubt. Awaken them to the infilling presence of Your Holy Spirit, assuring them that they are a child of God. Thank You for hearing my prayer and for setting my friend free. May they live forever in Your peace, joy, and love. Amen.” From the Hartzell home to yours – God loves you! And Merry Christmas!

of power. Others seek fame. Some try to escape through a vast array of destructive pursuits that lead only to loss and pain. Others find excuses and wallow in the tributary of victimhood. Some fall for lesser forms of love and find themselves used, abused, broken, and alone. Does all of this sound familiar to you? Does it feel like you’ve spent your entire life following little tributaries that simply dry up? If that’s you, then I have good news for you. The source of your life is flowing as strong today as ever. God’s forever love for you has never diminished – and it never will. Do you be-

Twas the Night Before Christmas By Clement Clarke Moore

T

was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the newfallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! “Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle,

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Minimalist Winter Outfits

T

here are a variety of approaches to seasonal style. Many of them are functional, i.e., coats in winter and shorts in summer. Some are based on trends, like an “it” bag or color-of-the-year. And then, you have a capsule collection approach of picking a limited number of pieces and putting them on heavy rotation throughout the course of a season. This winter, I’m thinking about a more minimalist way of dressing for the colder months. Layering up in neutral tones seems appealing, especially after

the holiday blitz of bright colors and embellishments. Of course, minimalism can skew a bit boring if you’re not careful. Here are a few ways to be anything but dull when going for simplistic looks this season. Textured knits are a key piece in a winter wardrobe, no matter your style. A cableknit over a turtleneck is a great way to layer against the cold weather while still looking chic. Mohair knits also provide a cozy feeling while being visually interesting. And ribbed knit sets in clean winter-white tones can freshen up a black

coat and be mixed and matched with other pieces. Winter and boots go hand-in-hand — or should that be foot-infoot? Of course, a good pair of snowshoes is the only option on some days, but when it’s not wet, icy, and completely Bernadette freezing, you can step Ulsamer out in a basic turtleneck and black pants with a bit of edge in a pair of black boots. Black boots can be both minimal and eye-catching at the same time, especially if they have a little flare. A stacked heeled ankle boot gives you height and polish in a button-down and trousers. A combat style boot ups the cool factor of jeans and a tee. And a knee-high boot with a dark sheen makes leggings and a sweater dress feel all the more sophisticated. Speaking of sophisticated, a polished pair of black pants can be both dressed up for winter or worn casually. Personally, I wear black pants all year round. For winter, I turn to both a tailored cropped pair and a looser, wide-leg pair for the office and evenings out. I love the idea of wearing a wide-leg pant with a chunky sneaker and tucked-in Henley style shirt. Loafers, wool socks, and an oversized sweater balance out a more fitted shorter pant, and you can’t go wrong with an allblack look by wearing a V-neck sweater

and boots with either trouser silhouette. Most, if not all, of these looks, can be layered with a simple cardigan in a matching or coordinated tone. Another topper to consider for minimal outfits is a knit blazer. I love wearing blazers in the fall, but they can be cumbersome come winter underneath overcoats. A soft knit blazer has the feel of a cardigan while providing a bit more structure. In an office setting, knitted blazers keep you cozy while also looking professional. Camel, grey, and navy options can be thrown on any minimal outfit, whether it’s an ivory silk blouse and straight-legged pant or khakis and a flannel. A knit blazer also works over dresses of any length, minito-midi-to-maxi and beyond. Another aspect of minimal dressing in the winter is jewelry. Yes, it can sometimes be a chore to remember and wear jewelry in the cold months, but most looks will benefit with one simple yet structural piece. Gold medium-sized hoop earrings, a rectangular chain link necklace, a signet ring, or even a well-appointed watch, just one is all you need for a simple and still chic ensemble. Of course, not everyone is a fan of minimalism, and you may find yourself needing more vibrancy in your clothes this winter. However, having a few simple yet sophisticated pieces to mix in with whatever winter outfits you put together can add texture and warmth. And who wouldn’t want texture and warmth during the cold and hard days ahead?

M

ajestic Christmas trees garner the lion’s share of the decorative fanfare when the holidays arrive. Trees may be the focal points of holiday decor, but the humble wreath adorning the front door is the first decoration guests are likely to see when visiting a home. Wreaths may need some care to maintain their beauty all month long. Here are some tips to help holiday wreaths last as long as possible. Choose a wreath wisely When shopping for a wreath, choose freshly cut greenery that you assemble yourself; otherwise, look for wreaths made

from freshly cut boughs with their foliage intact. Make sure not too many needles or leaves are falling off. Heavily decorated, preassembled wreaths may be convenient, but ornaments can make it challenging to give the wreath the moisture it needs to survive. Moisture/water Access to moisture will help to keep the wreath fresh. While a Christmas tree trunk may sit inside of a stand filled with water, wreaths require a little ingenuity. According to the wreath and garland retailer Club Botanic, if you will not be hanging a freshly purchased wreath right away, keep it in a plastic liner in a cool, dark place to help it

retain moisture. Just make sure you don’t seal that liner closed. Before hanging, lay the wreath in a couple of inches of water for about an hour or up to a day so that the cut stems can soak up water. Once the wreath is hanging on a door or elsewhere, spritz it with water every few days to prevent it from drying out. Location, location, location Where you hang the wreath is key to its longevity. Wreaths and garlands hung indoors likely won’t last as long as those hung outside, advises the floral retailer Bouqs.com. Evergreen boughs tend to require a colder climate to thrive, and indoor heat can prematurely zap moisture from the wreath. Using a humidifier indoors or misting the wreath may help.

It’s probably best to hang fresh wreaths outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight, which can dry out the greenery. Slightly shaded spots are best. If your front door is bathed in full sun for hours, hang an artificial wreath here instead of a fresh one. Maintain airflow Another factor that can affect the wreath’s longevity is an ample flow of oxygen. Wreaths tend to last much longer when kept on an outer door, indicates Harbor Farm in Ellsworth, ME. Wreaths sandwiched between a front door and a storm door will probably perish faster due to lack of oxygen. Following these tips can help keep fresh wreaths as vibrant as the day they were brought home.

80 Years Ago The Pearl Harbor Christmas of 1941 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

E

ighty years ago, in 1941, three weeks before Christmas, the United States was “suddenly and deliberately attacked” in a sneak attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, plunging us into an unwanted war. What was supposed to be another routine Christmas holiday season was changed utterly by this. People in the Williamsport area and then across the rest of the country tried to do their best to carry on as normally as they could despite these dramatic new circumstances. 1941 was a memorable and historical year; besides the attack on Pearl Harbor, the British sunk the giant battleship “Bismark” in May. In August, President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill proclaimed the “Atlantic Charter” in a meeting off Newfoundland. The Germans invaded the Soviet Union in June. The Willys company introduced the Jeep in June. In popular culture, Duke Ellington recorded “Take the A Train,” Glenn Miller recorded “Chattanooga Choo-Choo,” and the Andrews Sisters, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” that year. At the movies that year, “Citizen Kane,” considered by many film critics the “greatest film ever made,” is released. Other classic films released that year

included “How Green Was My Valley,” “Sergeant York,” and “The Maltese Falcon.” In sports, the “Brown Bomber,” Joe Louis, reigned as heavyweight boxing champion. In baseball, it was a year of distinction. The Red Sox’s Ted Williams hit .406, and is still the last major league batter to reach the magic .400 mark. 1941 was also the year of the Yankee’s Joe Dimaggio’s 56-game hitting streak, a mark which many believe may never be matched or broken. The Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series. In football, the Minnesota “Golden Gophers” won the college football championship. Bruce Smith earned the Heisman trophy, and the Chicago Bears defeated the New York Giants to win the NFL championship. The first pick in that year’s NFL college draft was Bill Dudley, who was picked by the Steelers. Since our involvement in the war had just started, wartime shortages had not started to set in yet, though resources for the fighting of war were beginning to be gathered and would start soon to affect the consumer market. My late father, who was then seven years old, found this out the hard way. On Friday, December 5, my grandparents placed an order for a brandnew bicycle for him for Christmas. On Monday, December 8, the day after the Pearl Harbor attack, the store where the bike order had been placed canceled it

metal scooters for $2.94. At L.L. Stearns, men’s ties were on sale for $1 each; a blouse could be had for $3.60. All purchases of $1 or more would be gift wrapped without charge, handmade handkerchiefs were 39 cents each, Philco radio-phonographs were selling for $109, in toys, a shooting battleship was 98 cents, a large dollhouse was $5.50. The Williamsport Sun began on December 20 a “World At War” map to be presented regularly that in its words, “the map is of such importance that readers are urged to cut it out and keep it handy for reference in following the course of the war.” In mid-December, it was announced that The West Branch Firemen’s Association had a special course in civilian defense practices, which was made available to the

public. A meeting shortly before Christmas was held by the organizations of area drug stores to prepare for first aid centers. The James V. Brown Library was named a clearinghouse for all defense-related literature from the federal, state, and local governments. It would be housed in the Reference Room. Large crowds estimated at 2,500 attended the third annual Community Christmas Sing held on the evening of December 22 outside the Sun-Gazette Building at Hepburn and West Fourth streets, sponsored by WRAK and the Sun-Gazette Company. The Rialto Theatre showed “Kathleen,” starring Shirley Temple, Larraine Day, and Herbert Marshall. “Birth of the Blues” with

Bing Crosby, Brian Donlevy, Rochester, and J. Carroll Naish at the Capitol Theatre, The Park Theatre was showing “Wild Geese Calling,” starring Henry Fonda and Joan Bennett. The Karlton featured “Great Guns,” starring Laurel and Hardy. A three-inch rainfall on December 23 caused flooding along Lycoming and Loyalsock Creeks. Some roads were blocked, and several railroad bridges were threatened but held. High Street, in the area of the Lycoming Division of the Aviation Manufacturing Corporation, was ordered closed by Mayor Leo C. Williamson as a precaution against possible sabotage. The Salvation Army distributed food baskets to 500 needy families in the county.

because of the wartime emergency. Locally, during that memorable Christmastide, despite the outbreak of war, it was a brisk Christmas shopping season that year. According to the “Gazette and Bulletin,” “the spirit of giving and the holiday atmosphere in the downtown district seemed to be good antidotes for those who were unable to give thought to anything but the battle in the Pacific.” For local grocery consumers, it was noted that A&P had pork loins for 15 cents per pound, chuck roast for 22 cents a pound, butter was on sale, two pounds for 73 cents, Marvel Breads 1 1/2 pound loaf sold for 15 cents, fresh milk was 13 cents a quart, a dozen eggs sold for 41 cents, and a 24-pound bag of flour was 79 cents. spiritual health. It can affect everyone from individuals to families and even communities and entire nations. Forgiving someone involves more than merely trying to forget a negative event; it means that we are less likely to desire retaliation against the offender and that we would like to resume or even create a level of connection. This will allow us to not only move past negative feelings but also create a positive feeling. Worthington writes that although

Carrier never forgot what his attacker did to him, he was able to replace his negative emotions and desire for revenge with feelings of compassion and was able to find closure. Certainly, we have all been hurt at some point in our lives. In fact, many of us may have experienced a life filled with pain. Somehow, we have to find a way to move past the hurt. I liken each negative experience to picking up a stone. It is a burden that we carry around. Eventually, when we carry enough stones, our burden

becomes so heavy that we are overwhelmed and unable to carry on. On the other hand, forgiveness allows us to lighten the load, so to speak. We are able to shed a stone here and there, and our burden eventually feels so light that we feel free and can be the best version of ourselves. So, during this holiday season, let us take this opportunity to forgive both others and ourselves for wrongs committed and experience the joy of the season to its fullest.

Whether it is a minor slight to which a person takes offense or a seemingly unforgivable act, forgiveness is a means of letting go of pain and moving on. According to Dr. Worthington, research has found that there is a link between forgiveness and wellbeing that includes physical, mental, and

he members of the Jersey Shore High School Future Business Leaders of America (JS FBLA) were busy during November, as they were working hard to support those in need in the community through their #weSHOREcare project. This year, #weSHOREcare organized a “Stuff the Bus” themed food drive in order to gather food and monetary donations for The New Love Center. JS FBLA wanted to support and provide for families in the community facing food insecurity. They were collecting donations on the weekends at various community hotspots, including Jersey Shore State Bank, Weis

Markets, Lingles, and the Nipponese Valley Village, as well as the various schools throughout the school district during the weekdays. They also collected donations during the football games on Friday nights. Throughout November 1-21, they saw the community come together to help other families of the community who are in need. Community involvement was the key to the success of this project. At all of the locations throughout November, JS FBLA saw countless community members of all ages come to the bus bringing donations. Dustin Stoetzel, a FBLA member who was frequently working at the bus recalled, “It

was really inspiring to see so many people come together to help community members facing food insecurity. Even during a pandemic, this community was willing to aid those in need, and to see that was incredible.” The community just on the weekends brought in a total of 1,773 canned and non-perishable goods, and that’s not even counting all of the donations that the JS FBLA received through the schools in the district. The FBLA was trying to “Meat” the needs of the community through donations of protein rich non-perishable food like canned meats, canned fish, canned beans, and peanut butter. They chose these items because their research indicated that, due to the sometimes-high prices of these items, food insecure families, food banks, and food pantries have difficulty obtaining these goods that are crucial to a healthy and balanced diet. Over the three weeks of November, they received a total of 16,903 canned and nonperishable goods from this generous community, including all of the items from the schools and from the weekend donations. Along with food donations, the JS FBLA were accepting monetary donations. The FBLA were able to kick off the project with a staggering donation of $5,000 from the Jersey Shore State Bank. Along with this monetary contribution to get the FBLA started, JSSB assisted the FBLA by helping them design the logo for the signs and banners for the bus and the Day of Caring t-shirts the FBLA handed out in exchange for donations.

Jersey Shore State Bank was not the only local business that wanted to give back to the community. On October 22, the FBLA went to many businesses between Williamsport, Jersey Shore, and Lock Haven. During these visits, they asked for these local businesses to be involved in giving back to the community. They received many positive responses from the businesses in the community, and one significant pledge from Steinbacher, Goodall, and Yurchak. One of the law firm’s partners, Julie Steinbacher, a JS High School and FBLA alumni, challenged the team to make this the biggest year yet for #weSHOREcare project, and promised that the firm would match all donations made throughout the span of the project. This contribution is huge, as the Jersey Shore FBLA raised $17,500 by November 19 with donations. To have that number matched means a lot to the The New Love Center, as the more money they get, the more families that can be helped. In addition to Jersey Shore State Bank and Steinbacher, Goodall and Yurcxhak, the top business sponsors included: Robo Construction LLC, Your Guardian Angel Preschool and Childcare, A Way to Grow Learning & Development Center, RW Dittmarr Plumbing & Heating, HJ Consulting Inc., Jersey Shore Moose Lodge #214, Steven and Teresa Keen, Weis Markets, Windecker Enterprises Inc., and Feger Insurance Agency. It wasn’t just food and monetary donations that led to the success of this project, however. Without the generosity of Wind-

nity.” Stephanie Windecker, owner of Windecker Enterprises who donated the bus for use throughout the month, was impressed “how much the community came together and donated so much to the project.” DJ Steinbacher, president of the JS High School FBLA, made a statement that sums up the success of #weSHOREcare this year quite well. “This project has helped the community in so many ways. It brought the community closer by them being able to get involved and help out The New Love Center with their monetary and non-perishable food items they all donated.” Clearly JS FBLA’s Stuff the Bus was a major success this year, and they couldn’t have done it without the help of the wonderful community of Jersey Shore, and all of the schools within the Jersey Shore Area School District. A formal presentation of the project funds will be presented to The New Love Center on January 10, 2022.

Windecker Enterprises donated both a bus for use throughout the project and a driver to make sure the bus arrived to the scheduled locations. These drivers helped transport the bus and donations throughout November and, with 16,903 donated items, it required them to call for a second bus. They were also kind enough to help load and unload the bus on the Day of Caring. Windecker Enterprises and their employees helped this project be a success! Clearly this project has been well received by everyone in this community. With so many donations, The New Love Center will be even more successful in helping food insecure families in the area. Superheroes never worried about the fabric of their capes, and you didn’t, either. As long as kid-you could leap and climb and fight crime, you were happy. Even better: having “American Comics: A History” by Jeremy Dauber in your hands today. Though, in a way, the history of American comics started with Egyptian hieroglyphics, you can also easily state that political cartoons were really this nation’s first cartoons. Once upon a time, you had piles of comic books. Well-loved, wellthumbed-through, you even read the ads on the back, didn’t you? Yeah, and with plenty of nostalgia and cultural touchpoints, “American Comics” will remind you of those rainy Saturdays spent fighting pixelated crime in POWs, BAMs, and WHAMs. But here’s the thing: author Jeremy Dauber never lets readers forget that comic book history is inseparably American history. We can trace this country’s past almost entirely through comics like Krazy Kat, Lil’ Orphan Annie, Captain America, Sad Sack, Archie, and Wee Pals, and we can see how American opinions changed according to our favorite funny pages. That makes this book perfect for comic book collectors, unusual-history buffs, and anyone who thought they were wasting time all day when (ha!) they were just reading comic books. Dear Mom: We forgive you for throwing out all our comic books so long ago. We’d rather have them back, but this book is a warm reminder of them. For sure, “American Comics” is a great escape.

about. That included conquering the Great Depression and the Fuhrer: by 1939, fourteen new superheroes had appeared in the nation’s comic books. American GIs were voracious consumers of comics during World War II, as Sad Sack and Dick Tracy joined Barney Google in the service and Daddy Warbucks became a three-star general. Comic book publishers also joined the War Effort when forced to use just a single staple to keep their product together, something a superhero surely could’ve helped do. WWII comic lovers returned home to some controversy: shortly after wars’ end, comic books were said to contribute to juvenile delinquency. The 1950s saw the heyday of horror comics and satire magazines that were not necessarily meant for consumption by children. Racism and sexism had always existed in comic books, but the 1960s saw a rise in strips by African American artists and more comic books with a feminist angle. And by the 1970s, comics had become “comix” and nearly everything changed...

inter in Pennsylvania at times is a winter wonderland. North central Pa. is known for year-round recreation which means many of us trade in our hiking boots, mountain bikes, and boats, for snowshoes, skis, and snowmobiles once enough snow covers the ground. There’s so much fun to be had right outside our doors, but we need to remember that the season comes with its share of conditions that could turn an enjoyable outing into a hospital visit. Prepare Before You Leave Preparation is key to staying safe whenever you head outdoors in the winter. The bitterly cold of the season mixed with snowstorms, ice, wind, rain, sleet, and whatever else Mother Nature throws our way, can often cause serious, life-threatening injuries,

no matter how careful we are. When heading outdoors, consider what the worst-case scenario may be and plan accordingly. Being out in the elements unexpectedly, or underdressed and underprepared can put you at a greater risk for developing hypothermia or frostbite. But even when under cover, hypothermia can still develop. Plan, dress accordingly, and even include items in a backpack to take along should you need them. It’s always safer to have the items and not need them, then to be without. When selecting an outfit consider moisture wicking or loose-fitting light-weight layers of clothing, a hat, gloves, insulated socks and water-repellant shoes. Steer clear of cotton and look to synthetics and wool blends. When we feel the sting of cold weather, we might brush aside the idea of working up a sweat or getting dehydrated. However, hydration is crucial year-round as during the winter

added risk. If you are participating in risky activities, consider taking steps for added safety. Falls and accidents can happen anywhere and at any time. While you may just think it’s a little bunny slope, you’re just walking down the driveway to the mailbox, or it’s just a flat snowmobile trail you’ve been down a dozen times, it’s important not to let our guard down when it comes to safety. Consider keeping traction aids readily accessible by your winter boots and always wear a helmet when out skiing or riding a snowmobile or ATV. While it may seem minor, these simple safety devices can go a long way in helping avoid injuries should you slip, fall, or get in an accident. Being active in the winter is a great way to stay healthy and avoid the winter blues. While some people like to enjoy the cold winter months hibernating indoors, you may enjoy cold-weather sports and outdoor activities. No matter what your preference is, we want you to be safe and avoid a trip to our emergency departments. months, sweat evaporates more rapidly in the cold, dry air, and that can result in dehydration. Without the sweat, we’re tricked into thinking we aren’t losing fluids as rapidly as during a hot, summer day. Cooler temperature can also reduce the body’s thirst response. When exercising in cold weather, you may be less likely to drink water voluntarily. Carry along a water bottle when you head outdoors and be sure to moderate your consumption of alcoholic and sugary beverages. Additionally, plans can change just as quickly as the weather so it’s a good idea to consider letting a friend or family member know when you’re heading out, especially if you’re planning to be alone. With the shorter days, darkness can sneak up on you. Even jogging or sledding can become dangerous when it gets dark. Make sure you wear bright colors when you are out and keep a small flashlight or headlamp with you. By sharing your plans, if you don’t return home when expected, your friends will know exactly where to find you. Preventing Injuries One of the biggest tips for avoiding injury is to use common sense and avoid situations that will put you at

The Roving Sportsman… Your Management Plan By Jon Pries

I

f you have ever been fortunate enough to take a long dreamed about hunting or fishing trip to one of the western states or to an overseas destination, then you know that a great part of the enjoyment of such a venture is the planning and preparation for the occasion. You also learned both during and after such a trip that the outcome of the entire trip was greatly influenced by the detail of the planning that you did prior to your departure. A solid and specific management plan is equally critical when it comes to doing habitat improvement for wildlife on any property. To do so requires that you establish your realistic short and long-term goals and then develop a plan, or roadmap if you will, to reach those goals. Obviously, money and available equipment available might be a limiting factor; thus, some short-term goals may have to be stretched out to the category of long-term goals. Keep in mind that there is some money available through federal programs

such as CREP (Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program). Certain equipment may be available at little or no cost from some government agencies. In the last installment of this column, we covered the need for mapping out your property and the surrounding properties. These maps are critical to laying out your game plan for habitat improvement. Knowing what resources are already available on your property will guide you in determining what work you can do that will result in the greatest return for your money and time. What wildlife species do you want to attract and hold on your property? What projects can be accomplished over the next several months? What improvements will be set as long-term goals? Is your main interest in improving the deer hunting on your property? Or do you want to increase the successful hunting of spring or fall turkeys on your land? If you are a rabbit hunter or an upland game hunter who wants better grouse hunting, there are numerous things you can do for each of these

able plants that you want to promote. Woodlots and forests in north-central Pennsylvania can easily become overrun with undesirable species such as striped maple and New York or hay-scented ferns. Spraying herbicides is the most effective way of eliminating these invasive plants. Based on your goals for your desired species of wildlife, you might also consider some type or types of harvesting some of the trees. A timber stand improvement with emphasis on removing less desirable trees and leaving the healthier and more desirable species is usually a good step to include in your plan. It may provide some income that can be used to complete other projects in your plan. Clearcuts are usually not recommended over large areas, but when accomplished in small plots, can create beneficial openings in an otherwise completely forested area. Once you have completed these steps and you have all of your ideas in writing, it is time to turn to the “experts” so that they may analyze and help fine-tune your game plan. They can help develop a timetable for your overall plan and suggest some programs that may be available to you, maximize your time and help control costs.

game animals and birds – some improvements may be expensive to implement and time-consuming, and yet some are low cost and take little time to complete. But initially, you need to list the wildlife species you want to benefit most and then list whether your desire is to provide better cover or better food sources, or both – depending on the initial inventory of the land’s resources that you have completed. Establish a section of your plan for the management of your fields and open areas and another section for the management of your woodlots and forested tracts. You can liken caring for either the fields or the woods as like caring for a vegetable garden. In a vegetable garden, you must continually eliminate weeds and sometimes fertilize the vegetable plants. If you do not, the aggressive weeds will soon overtake the good plants, and the garden will not be productive. The very same occurs if you leave fields or woods completely unattended. The fields will be slowly taken over by undesirable invasive species such as multiflora rose, autumn olive, barberry, and Tartarian honeysuckle. Periodic mowing and perhaps occasional spraying should keep these things in check and benefit the desir-

In addition, I have talked to neighborhood. The national several folks who seem to have had estimate for all of North America is more bear sightings on their game between 600,000 and 900,000. cameras than in the past. Case in When you compare Pennsylvania’s point; a couple of months ago, I was bear numbers to other states, we sitting in my studio working on a find Michigan and Virginia are painting when I got up and looked pretty similar to us, while Alaska out the back door window, and 40 tops all the states coming in at yards away was a 200-pound bear around 100,000. Maine is probably starring in at me — it was 3:00 in next with 24,000 to 36,000, with the afternoon. Just last month, our Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, front door ringer went off; when North Carolina, California, Idaho, viewing the camera’s recording later, and maybe Wyoming all coming a black bear was walking within in with numbers in the 20-30,000

hunting opportunities over a longer period of time. While these increased opportunities may not have increased the bear take significantly, it has offered Pennsylvania hunters more time between October and December to take a bear. By the way, Lycoming County holds its own pretty well when it comes to harvest numbers; this year, Lycoming County led with 212, followed by Potter County with 179, Pike County coming in at 167, and Tioga at 165.

While Pennsylvania may not be in the top half-dozen when it comes to the numbers game, my guess is we would rank right up there in the top bracket when it comes to size. Years ago, when I worked with Gary Alt, at one time the state’s leading bear biologist, he told me our state had some of the heaviest black bears in the country. This year the largest bear taken was a 722-pounder taken in Franklin County. Luzerne County came in second with a 681 pounder, Armstrong County was third with

a weight of 676 pounds, Clearfield County fourth with 640 pounds, and Lycoming County fifth with a 640 pounder as well. Just to give this some perspective, the average adult male grizzly bear comes in at between 400-790 pounds, and females weigh in at 290-400 pounds. There are obviously plenty of bears left, and I suspect new spring births will bring our numbers right back up to previous levels. I’ll be anxiously watching out my back and front door windows to see what shows up.

range. I don’t have any figures for other states’ bear harvests, but I’m betting that Pennsylvania again ranks up in that top dozen category. Pennsylvania has had an average bear harvest around the 3,000 mark for at least the past dozen years, and this year at this point, 3,613 bears have gone through game commission check stations. Again, I don’t know what other states offer in the way of bear hunting opportunities, but Pennsylvania has added more bear

At Montoursville’s airport the runways lay vacant Would-be passengers were told they had to be patient Travelers heading out and those coming in Made things very difficult to be with their kin But miles away where Santa does shelter The pace of activities is a bit helter-skelter The elves are all busy, their work in a frenzy All hoping the weather is not breezy or hazy When from the workshop there came such a clatter Santa’s advisors asked, “What is the matter?” It seems they had a bit of an inventory crunch From letters received from the Lycoming County bunch “What is it with these folks,” one elf did question “Asking for sports stuff is all they do mention”
