From the Editor…

Happy New Year!

W

ell, look at me all fancy like Applebee’s on page 2! I have to tell you; this is one of my favorite issues of the year. Honestly, every year when I write this article, it’s hard not to get a little choked up thinking about all the fantastic organizations that my co-workers and I get to support this week, from furbabies to actual babies to families and vets and the great outdoors! This week’s issue is just one of the many ways Jimmy helps people and our community throughout the year. I can’t state enough that Jimmy doesn’t get (nor would he want) nearly enough recognition for all the contributions he makes to our community every year. I want to say thank you to Jimmy, not only for the opportunity that he gives us with this issue but also for all that he does for so many all year long. Thanks, JWebb! So, on to the details about this week’s issue: For the past six years, Jimmy has given each full-time employee a page of the paper to donate to the charity of their choice. We all get to pick something that is near and dear to us and donate ad space, editorial space, or a combination of both.

As you can see on the cover, we have a variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read through this issue, but here is a quick rundown: Aly’s Monkey Movement: Aly’s Monkey Movement is a young girl’s dream to change the world by raising money to purchase stuffed animal monkeys to deliver to children all over the United States. These children are experiencing something hard in their lives. Whether it be an illness, the loss of a parent, or a house fire; Aly aims to provide a piece of comfort, or joy to the child in the midst of their fear. Beckoning Cat Project: They believe that the problem of “too many cats and not enough homes” can be addressed through educational outreach, coordination of services, and a comprehensive neuter-spay program that reaches all cats in our neighborhoods. Clinton County SPCA: The Clinton County SPCA is a small, no-kill animal shelter located in Lock Haven. They work every day to protect the legion of animals suffering from cruelty, abuse, neglect, and abandonment each year. They cannot accomplish their life-sav-

ing work without your support. Consolidated Sportsman of Muncy Creeks: The Sportsmen manage two trout nurseries in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission at the Faus Nursery in Steph Hughesville and the Nordstrom Bob King Nursery at Roaring Run. Family Promise of Lycoming County: Family Promise of Lycoming County empowers families to become and remain self-sufficient by breaking the cycle of homelessness, providing community awareness and advocacy, and creating mission opportunities for individuals and faith-based communities. Lock Haven Veterans Benefits Center: The Lock Haven Veterans Benefits Center is an organization devoted to assisting Veterans in receiving all the benefits they deserve. A few of these benefits are death benefits, mortgage help, obtaining Military records, long-term care, and many more. Lycoming County SPCA: The mission of the Lycoming County SPCA is to protect all domestic animals by providing shelter, emergency treatment, investigation and prosecution of cruelty or abuse complaints, adoption and counseling,

education programs. and humane care throughout Lycoming County. Each of these charities means something to the employee that sponsored them. They are all amazing local organizations that are doing what they can to help in our area. So, thank you again, Jimmy. Doing things like this makes me so proud to be a Webb Weekly employee. I hope that as you read through the ads/editorials about these charities, you will consider adding them to your 2022 donation lists if you are able. Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! Do you have your resolutions ready to go? Listen, as of this writing, I’m still working on finishing Christmas stuff, so I’ll probably get to resolutions sometime around June-ish. That’s right, folks; if you’ve been following along the last couple of weeks, you’ll be happy to know that as of Christmas Eve Eve, I still don’t have everything done. It’s fine. This is fine. I’m sure by the time you read this, I will have pulled myself together and pulled off Christmas…maybe. One last reminder. Please be safe if you are headed out to ring in the New Year. Drink responsibly. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t text and drive. Wear a seatbelt.

UPMC Therapist: Aquatic Therapy Great Option for Low-Impact Recovery Rachel Heck, physical therapist assistant UPMC Rehabilitation Services

S

imply put, aquatic physical therapy is the practice of physical therapy in the water. Also known as hydrotherapy, it’s often an effective, evidence-based option to consider as an alternative for people who have trouble exercising due to pain, weakness, and weight-bearing and mobility limitations. The pools used are designed specifically for physical therapy and are often smaller and have adaptations, like handrails and lifts, to enhance patient comfort and accessibility. An aquatic program is designed by a patient’s physical therapist as part of an individualized treatment plan to achieve specific goals. Is Aquatic Therapy an Option for Me? Aquatic therapy can be beneficial for a number of different patients and is not utilized for specific diagnoses, but instead is used to address particular problems a patient may have including: – Balance and coordination – Muscle strengthening/relaxation – Function/mobility – Increasing flexibility – Decreasing pain

Aquatic therapy is beneficial in many ways. The buoyancy of the water relieves the pressure and stress of our body weight weighing down upon our joints. It also reduces the compressive forces on the joints that would normally be felt with a land-based program. The pressure of the water against our body reduces swelling in our limbs and the warmth of the water increases blood circulation. Combined, these therapeutic conditions improve the flow of oxygenated blood to the damaged muscles and tissues encouraging healing. Aquatic therapy is typically used for patients who: – Are not allowed full weight bearing but need to work on walking and movement exercises – Need to work on jumping or landing but are unable to tolerate high impact activities – Are recovering from surgery – Are experiencing acute low back pain and cannot tolerate standing and walking – Are athletes and need to break down sport specific drills in a more controlled environment What to Expect Physical therapists with specialty training

in aquatic therapy design a program specifically to a patient’s physical abilities and work with the patient to achieve goals. If you’re physical therapist does not have aquatic therapy as an option, they can refer to a program and will collaborate with that program’s physical therapist on your treatment. There is no requirement to know how to swim before participating in aquatic therapy. The therapists are trained to work with patients of all abilities, safety devices are provided, and the pools used are usually designed specifically for physical therapy and are often smaller and have adaptations, like handrails and lifts, to enhance patient comfort and accessibility. Consider Your Options Physical therapists offer aquatic therapy at many facilities across the region. If you believe you or a loved one could benefit from hydrotherapy, talk to your provider and physical therapist today. Your provider and therapist have the best understanding of your condition, can help determine if you could benefit from an aquatic therapy program, and refer you to a program in your community. UPMC has multiple aquatic therapy programs available across north central Pa. For more information about rehabilitation services, visit UPMC. com/RehabNCPA.

Community Solutions For Cats

Beckoning Cat Project would like to thank the employees, patrons, customers, volunteers, communities, businesses, and organizations who have supported and participated in the services of the clinic and the cat cafe. Similar to other small businesses and non-profits which have struggled and improvised to survive throughout Covid and staffing issues, BCP has also faced multiple challenges.

THE CAT TALES CAFÉ

320 East Third Street • Williamsport, PA 17701 570-505-1473 • www.beckoningcatproject.org

www.webbweekly.com

Beckoning Cat Project’s Cat Tales Café opened in June 2019. The purpose of the café is to provide a comfortable environment for people who may not be able to have their own cat but would like spend a little time visiting with cats. Admission to the café is $5.00 per person. This fee helps support the costs of housing and care for the cats. There is free admission on Tuesdays for seniors, veterans, and active military with ID. The café partners with and showcases cats from the Lycoming County SPCA. All cats at the café are adoptable. Many of these cats may have been overlooked at the shelter because of their age, conditions, or cage shyness. The café gives these cats a better chance of showing their true personalities, and gives people who would like to adopt a cat the chance to get to know the cats in a natural indoor environment. The café also provides an opportunity for cat lovers to volunteer. Applications are accepted year-round. Interested individuals can email clinic@beckoningcatproject.org or message on FB to the group Cat Tales Café. The café looks forward to returning to expanded hours and events, such as birthday parties, cat yoga, bingo and painting once staffing shortages have been alleviated. You can follow Cat Tales Cat Café placements on Facebook group Cat Tales Cat Café. Donations to Beckoning Cat Project can be designated for the café by including a verbal or written note from the donor. Please note while we do showcase Lycoming County SPCA cats we are not affiliated with them and any donations to support the café expenses should be made to Beckoning Cat Project.

Beckoning Cat Project Clinic provides high quality, low cost neuter/spay services for cats in the greater Williamsport area and beyond. The clinic has been in operation for 8 years, and has neutered/spayed approximately 31,000 cats. The need for neuter/spay services has grown exponentially as more people become aware of the plight of cats without homes or medical care. In some areas that have used the Trap, Neuter, Return approach, cat populations have stabilized and are no longer growing. Throughout 2020 and 2021, partial shutdowns due to staff shortages and the COVID crisis created a backlog in appointments for veterinary services, since fewer hours and surgeries could be performed. Due to reduced funding and staff shortages, many of our popular programs, such as Compassionate Communities and Veterans Spay days had to be put temporarily on hold. The clinic continues to search for a qualified second veterinarian and plans to resume all free and reduced cost programs in the new year when hours and services can again be expanded. Monetary donations, or gifts of cat food, litter, and pee pads, are tax deductible and always greatly appreciated by the organization. Despite this number of daunting challenges in 2020 and 2021, Beckoning Cat Project continues to provide and coordinate a number of services to the cat community. Cooperation and coordination with other organizations and individuals continues to build a wider network of services to alleviate the suffering of cats without homes or healthcare in our area.

and a metallic or sparkly shoe is a comfortable yet still festive nod to the season. And sparkle shoes don’t have to be heels; it’s whatever style of shoe catches your fancy. A sequined boot or silver loafer with your favorite jeans and sweater that you already own fit the bill (or should I say foot) and are just as celebratory as a pump. If you find yourself with outdoor plans, you can’t go wrong and bring a bit of sparkle with a turtleneck dress, statement coat, and crystal jewelry. Not only will this look keep you warm, but with gemstones added to these basics, you can bring a bit of shine to your ensemble. Of course, shine, sparkle, and sequins aren’t the only way to show off your festive spirit. An unexpectedly colorful sweater, like hot pink, lavender, or teal with a matching bottom and opposing colored coat will be in the running for the boldest outfit you’ve worn all year. Other bold sartorial choices for NYE include a chic one-shoulder top with pants and shoes in a matching hue. That special-occasions dress collecting dust in the back of your

closest? It’s time to stop waiting for the perfect event and bust it out. Or go iconic with a velvet jumpsuit, or any jumpsuit, really. Whether black, printed, full length, or cropped, it doesn’t get more party-perfect than a jumpsuit; just be sure to find the style and fit that works for you. Of course, your New Year’s Eve plans may center around snacks and catching up with your favorite show. You can still “celebrate” in style with a matching knitwear set. A ribbed knit top and bottom will keep you cozy and is a fun alternative to everyday sweats. Or don your fanciest pajamas. A silky sleep set is chic and provides a bit of glitz to your lowkey NYE, especially if there’s a marabou or feathered trim involved. Whether you are hitting the town or parading around your living room to say sayonara to 2021, do yourself a favor and dress up. Yes, it may seem frivolous and unimportant, but we all deserve a break from the day-to-day, and who doesn’t love a sparkly party look to feel good in!

County Hall Corner: Looking Forward to 2022 By Larry Stout

M

y headline is a bit misleading, as, in many ways, I am NOT looking forward to 2022. I am largely pessimistic about our shortterm future, but in the long-term, I have a stubborn belief in the American spirit to steady itself when the ship of state shifts too far to the right or to the left.

There is also the reality that the future is, at best, guesswork. Even the smartest people get it wrong. Albert Einstein wrote in 1932, “There is not the slightest indication that nuclear energy will ever be obtainable.” Yet, it was Einstein’s science that made nuclear power possible. Time Magazine projected the future in 1966 and noted, “Remote shopping, while entirely feasible, will flop because women like

to get out of the house like to handle the merchandise like to be able to change their minds.” The best was the 1995 prediction by Robert Metcalfe, president of the 3Com Corporation,

who commented, “I predict the internet will soon go spectacularly supernova and in 1996 catastrophically collapse.” As the keynote speaker at the 1997 International World Wide Web Conference, he literally ate his words about a “gigalapse” by taking the quote written on a printed page, putting it in a blender, adding some water, and drinking it. Yet, it is worse to not even attempt to look down the road. Vice President Kamala Harris recently admitted that the Biden administration didn’t see

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves F igu re 1 : W h en t h es e very s mall begin to “die” they b lood ves s els b ec ome d is eas ed cause you to have t h ey b egin t o s h rivel u p and t h e nerves b egin t o d egenerat e. balance problems,

Delta or Omicron coming. This is more than a little odd because expecting a novel virus, or any virus for that matter, to continue to mutate is almost a sure thing. So, with common sense in mind, I would like to make what I think are two pretty safe predictions for Two Thousand and Twenty-Two. First, we can definitely expect the United States to continue to be polarized — the “woke culture” on one side and the “don’t tread on me” folks on the other. There is presently not anyone, be they a politician, celebrity, or public figure, that seems to be able to speak to both groups. Everyone is fitting every message into their own narrative. There was a time when Americans could differ greatly yet still come together because there was a belief that we were “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” But when we take away God, our unity, our liberty and make justice subjective rather than law-based, nothing is left to agree on. We have seen this in the Lycoming County Commissioners meetings through the past several years. The

508 W ashington B lvd. W illiamsport

‘offended’ people group will pack the meeting room, and one after another will come to the microphone and say basically the same thing. The commissioners will be polite and promise to consider their concerns, and the ‘offended’ will leave glad they did their part for the cause. And in the end, the commissioners will do what they think is the best for all and not be influenced by the packed house. My second prediction is that every plan, program, or event will be ‘penciled’ in because nothing will be set in stone in the coming year. I have already noted the uncertainty that inflation brings to an economy in a recent column. But it goes down to every level. Will there be a Little League World Series? If so, what will it look like? Will there be any of the usual fairs, concerts, sports activities, etc., etc.? For that matter, will schools even be open, and if so, when and how? I am an old guy, sneaking up on 70 years of age, and never in my lifetime have I ever seen a new year come in with more uncertainties. And perhaps that is the only sure prediction for 2022 — it will be uncertain.

Have A Happy New Year!

Donating to The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a wonderful way to help our veterans gain access to a wide variety of services. The VFW, located at 20 Bellefonte Avenue in Lock Haven is an accredited benefits center, operating under the National VFW and the VFW Department of Pennsylvania. This center services the north Pennsylvania area with three accredited service officers and three support personnel. Donations to the VFW will assist our Veterans with healthcare enrollment, GI Bill applications, VA work study, filing claims and appeals, personnel and treatment record requests, requests for and presentation of military medals, military research, retirement applications, house calls, and CRSC/ CRDP applications. This center will also provide Veterans with emergency assistance requests through collaboration with local and state organizations. The VFW also accepts donations of hospital beds, scooters, walkers, and other ambulatory devices. These items are dispersed as needed to other Veterans in need. Donations are extremely important to our cause and we wholeheartedly appreciate your involvement.

“David Bower and the service officers at the VFW Veterans Benefit Center in Lock Haven are outstanding people and always go above and beyond for their clients. When I got out of the military, I went to the VA office to see about my benefits. I was told that my records could not be found so there was nothing that could be done for me. A few months later I was told to go see David Bower. Within six months of my initial appointment with Dave and his staff, not only were my military records found, but I was also awarded my monthly compensation. I would and will always talk highly about Dave and his staff.” - John

of Kentucky were overwhelmed that their fellow firefighters in Pennsylvania would be so generous to them. Though they were tired and wanted to get back on the road, the Clinton Township crew spent several hours loading the hose and equipment on the truck. Then they went over the operation and features of the truck with several of their volunteers, so they were ready to go with it. Little did any of them realize that just hours later, there would be a house fire where the truck went into instant action. No sooner was the firehouse out than there was a vehicle accident where the fire truck was dispatched. It was a miracle that the truck was available to help save lives, and also a miracle that there are volunteers who have lost everything still willing to help their fellow neighbors. When the team returned at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday night, December 19th, every piece of apparatus was in the parking lots with lights again blazing to welcome

them back. Mat Post, Todd Winder, Ron Winder, Brad Wright, Eric Eveland from Clinton Township, and Assistant Fire Chief Don Knapp from Muncy were exhausted, exhilarated, and very, very thankful that the trip went so well. On Tuesday, December 21st, the Lycoming County Commissioners invited Mat Post and Todd Winder to be recognized at their weekly meeting. This is a story that folks will be talking about decades from now. Hopefully, it will inspire others to consider joining or at least helping in whatever way they can to our incredible volunteer fire companies. Heroes are not born — they are made — by showing up and giving all they’ve got to help others.

Snyder, along with one of his workers, Travis Kropp, would drive the hauler taking the fire truck. Packing all the hoses, fire gear, equipment, etc., was a huge effort. The value of these items new would amount to over 2 million dollars. Finally, the work was done, and the transport caravan was ready to roll on Friday night, December 17th. It was one of the most moving scenes imaginable. Fire companies from the area came to escort them on the way, along with the Pennsylvania State Police, who made getting to the interstate much, much easier. Close to a hundred folks were there to wish them off, and with a prayer and high-fives, lights blazing, they took off on a 14-hour journey to Kentucky. Once they arrived on Saturday morning, December 18th, they could not imagine the damage. Whole communities were simply wiped away. The most needy was the Mayfield Graves County Fire Company, so they received the fire truck. What was humbling for the Pennsylvania team was how these folks who lost everything were so grateful for the fire truck and equipment, offering them everything they could after such a long, arduous ride. The firefighters

Then, the biggest Christmas gift of the year came when the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company members held a special meeting the next day, Wednesday, the 15th, and voted unanimously to donate their 1994 Sutphen Custom Engine/Tanker to the Kentucky effort. The company had just replaced it over the summer and had been shopping it around and hoping to get at least $20-25,000 for it. The offers were not getting close to that number, so they were holding out. There was not a single objection to the motion — the only concern was getting it ready in two days! Stripping down a truck for transport and organizing all the equipment became a two-day marathon for the members of the Clinton Township Fire Company, as there was at the same time an almost non-stop flow of supplies coming in. All this while they still had to respond to 911 calls that came in. The biggest concern was transporting the truck to Kentucky as it needed to be hauled, and this would be expensive. But then, on Thursday, Ground Shaker Trucking in Muncy not only volunteered to haul the truck but offered to do it for nothing! The owner of Ground Shaker himself, Nicholas

Williamsport Sun December 27, 1946 Radio for State Police in Area Ready Saturday

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

FOR A BETTER US.

TODAY RVRYMCA.ORG

tate Police at Troop D planned to inaugurate, late this afternoon or evening, use of the new statewide mobile radio telephone system. It was learned today. Technicians making the installation in this area installed a console unit for a 250-watt station to be operated from the Montoursville barracks over an automatic relay system station atop Bald Eagle Mountain. Several weeks ago, all the basic equipment was placed in four new automobiles assigned to Troop D. Completion of the work on the cars involves now only the placing of the actual units in the cars. First broadcasts were made this afternoon as engineers tested the system, which is intended to keep every one of the State Police radio-equipped cars in constant contact with the whole police organization all over the Commonwealth. The primary advantage will be the

aid in policing crime and traffic over isolated and rural sections of country. A secondary and tie-in advantage to every taxpayer will be the indirect services provided to cities, boroughs, and townships in the state which now have or do not have police radio. Williamsport has had radio since 1938 but its usefulness intended of course, only for the city, has been confined to the city. With the installation of State Police radio, police agencies of the whole state will be afforded to cooperate with each other with a greater degree of speed and thus bringing criminals and law breakers to speedier apprehension. The Bell Telephone Company is installing and renting the State Police equipment to the state. Just last week, Governor Edward Martin inaugurated the private mobile telephone system at Harrisburg troop headquarters. Operation of Williamsport’s State Police radio forms another link in the chain expected to be completed by next summer.

Prayers for 2022

H

ere we are — another year has gone by. I swear this year went quicker than the last. They say the older we get, the faster time goes, and I believe it. I’m not even that darn old and already ask, “where does the time go!?” I just pray that this year, 2022, will be even better than the last two years. It’s been rough on all of us

living in this nightmare of COVID and things changing so fast in our country. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 Don’t go off on the people running this country. Trust in the almighty

2022? What are you looking forward to this year? I have a few things, but I’ve never been a resolution person. I like it to be a lifestyle change, so I stick with it all year, not just the month of January, and give up. I’ve done good with goals I’ve set each year, but my mission for this year is two things. First, I want to hit that 80lbs. That means I would be at my wedding weight, which means I have about 20lbs to go. My mission over three

COOKIN

years ago was to start losing weight. I’ve stuck to it, year after year, teaching and learning so many things. I’ve learned to maintain and build muscle. I’ve taught myself to eat better but still enjoy all the good stuff too! I’m proof with losing that 60lbs and kept it off. Oh, you will have the “know it alls” tell you that you can’t eat this or that. No carbs. No sugar. Blah, blah, blah. Well, I’m here to tell you it’s all about portion control and calories in, calories out. Don’t deprive yourself! If you want to lose weight this year, you can do it. Don’t give up! Start with one small bad habit at a time. Don’t rush it. Trust the process and still enjoy things you love. Lastly is reading. Gosh, I hate to read. I wish I enjoyed it — never have. One reason is that I don’t really have the time. I don’t even get the time to look at magazines, let alone sit and dive into a book. I don’t get much quiet time either. I need it quiet to read and write, and

my quiet time consists of writing my column and in the mornings during my workouts. My kids know that it’s Momma’s time when I am working out. If you come up to interrupt my reps and sets to tattle, ummm, somebody better be bleeding! Kenzy will come up and workout with me sometimes. She gets her little 2lb. dumbbells and will do reps with me. It’s so cute! My kids just understand my journey and the need to get my workout in with my weight loss. They know the routine that I have never given up on. I just thought if I could commit myself to read like I have exercise, that I could do it! I want to read the Bible or commit myself to some kind of devotional throughout the year. I give my time in exercise to my body; why can’t I commit to reading more about the Lord to grow even closer with Him when He gave his body to save me!? I never thought I’d EVER exercise faithfully, just like I am sitting here doubting myself on reading each

day. I just have to pray for God to help me enjoy reading and find something to read that I can get into. I need this, and time with the Lord is well spent. Set a goal no matter how big or how small. I’m looking forward to hitting new numbers this year with my new legs (insert one of my famous big smiles here!) and building even more confidence after getting pesky veins removed this January. I’m also looking forward to a vacation with all of our friends this year in Gatlinburg in our charming log cabin. I always look forward to making more memories, watching my kids grow, and growing my relationship more with God. Trusting in Him is the best thing anyone can ever do, and

as we jump into 2022, rely on him. Don’t worry about things WE CAN NOT control! Live your life, trust in Him, and all will be fine. Happy New Year!! *Oldie but goodie, and perfect for a New Year’s Eve Party!* Brown Sugar Glaze Bacon Wrapped Sausage Ingredients: • 1 package (16 Oz. Size) Little Smokies Sausages • 1 pound Bacon Strips • 1 cup Brown Sugar, For Sprinkling Directions: Preheat oven to 400ºF. Cut bacon slices in half and wrap each smokie with a half strip of bacon. Place all the wrapped smokies in a single layer in a baking dish, or rimmed sheet pan. Take some brown sugar and sprinkle evenly over the smokies. Bake for about 20–30 minutes or until bacon is nice and crisp (bake times will vary). These babies won’t last long, and don’t count on leftovers.

ntuitive eating is a sort of anti-diet that is based on the idea that we should eat when we are physically hungry rather than on the schedule of a prescribed diet. In addition, eating should be a judgment-free, guilt-free experience. The program was built on the principle that temporary diets don’t work and that lifestyle changes are critical for

overall health and well-being. The term intuitive eating was coined in 1995 and was the title of a book by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. However, the idea has been around since the 1970s where it was used by authors and practitioners such as Susie Orbach, Geneen Roth, and Thelma Wayler. Intuitive eating makes each person the expert of their own body and its hunger signals. Unlike a typical diet,

intuitive eating does not impose guidelines about what to avoid and what or when to eat. Rather, it allows a person to make those choices. The biggest Dave barrier to intuiBellomo tive eating, however, is that most people have forgotten how to listen to their bodies as it concerns what to eat when to eat, and how much to

eat. Basically, eat when you are actually hungry and stop when you are full. The first step is to learn to trust yourself and understand your personal eating patterns. Are you eating when you are hungry, or are you eating because you are bored or emotional? True hunger is the body’s signal that we need to replenish nutrients. We should take in what we need; no more and no less. Emotional hunger is a form of self-medication and is driven by feelings of sadness, stress,

boredom, and others. Katie Hake, a registered dietician and writer for the American College of Sports Medicine recommends six tips to practice intuitive eating around the holidays. Avoid the diet mentality: Practice eating regular meals and avoid skipping meals or over-exercising so that you don’t feel deprived. Say No: It’s ok to politely refuse an extra helping or a dessert that you don’t really want. Eat what you need,

not what someone else thinks you need. Choose satisfying foods: If you choose healthy foods you actually like, you will be less likely to binge on less healthy foods or be tempted to stray later. Pick foods that appeal to your colorful senses, smell good, have an appealing texture, and are tasty. Also, don’t be afraid to try new things. Eat mindfully: When eating, practice using all of your senses. Not only

will it slow you down, but it will allow you to eat smaller portions and give you a feeling of being full. In addition, eating mindfully will also help improve the amount of pleasure you get when you eat. Stay active: Set activity goals and work on increasing the amount of time you spend being physically active. This should be a gradual process where you increase the length and difficulty of an activity or activities over time. Be kind: Be kind to yourself and others. Overall health includes

multiple aspects such as mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, among others. Don’t feel shame when eating, as there are very few bad foods. For example, eating cheesecake is not bad, nor does it make you bad. It is simply a matter of how much and how often you should eat specific foods. So, having a small slice of cheesecake on occasion is ok for most people. Conversely, having fresh non-starchy vegetables is usually ok to eat more often and in greater quantities, as most are low in calories and high in nutrients.

ockdown wasn’t all bad. It gave you an opportunity to catch up on your favorite television, for one thing. You had a chance to reconnect with people, to learn new skills, or take up a new hobby. It gave you time to clean house, de-clutter, and find things you forgot. And all that time alone was good for making mischief, mayhem, and murder – at least in a book... Readers who love true crime but don’t have time will be happy to find “She Kills Me: The True Stories of History’s Deadliest Women” by Jennifer Wright, illustrated by Eva Bee (Abrams Image, $19.99). In this book, you’ll read dozens of short but true accounts of cult

queens, poisoners, Black Widows, torturers, and more. Some of the women may be familiar to you, while others will chill you with stories you’ve never heard before. This book also offers things to learn: how to tell someone’s a psychopath, when to spot a dangerous cult, and why divorce is better than a deadly alternative. Speaking of wild women, you’ll be riveted by “America’s Femme Fatale: The Story of Serial Killer Belle Gunness” by Jane Simon Ammeson (Red Lightning Books, $20.00). More than a century has gone since Belle Gunness killed her first victim and she didn’t stop there. Belle went on to kill at least thirteen more people over the course of just over twenty years. Money was involved, of course, and she had a little bit of help now and then, but what’s creepiest about Belle are the circumstances of her death. And now you’ve gotta read the book... Readers who love true crime books know that no collection is

complete without a book by an M.E., which is why “Final Exams” by Cyril H. Wecht, M.D., J.D. and Dawna Kaufmann, foreword by Anne Rule (McFarland Exposit, $29.95) is the book to find. Here, in great detail are four cases that will put you on the edge of your seat because they start at the beginning and take you all the way to the legalities involved. You might know Wecht from his other works, or from appearances he’d done on the news. If you don’t, here’s a great introduction. And finally, if you love true crime but you want something a little different, try “Love Lockdown: Dating, Sex, and Marriage in America’s Prisons” by Elizabeth Greenwood (Gallery Books, $27.00). What is it like to have a relationship with someone who was in prison when you met? What

are the ramifications, physically, emotionally, and financially? Greenwood has a unique viewpoint in this book because she had a semi-relationship with a man in prison, and her outlook adds a lot to this fascinating, compassionate, totally eye-opening account. If these books don’t satisfy your craving for crime, then be sure to ask your favorite librarian or bookseller for help. They’ll have books in mind that will keep you reading now and all winter; all you have to do is ask. Oh, and be sure to lock the door…

How Holiday Hosts Can Avoid Overserving Guests

T

he 2021 holiday season could prove to be especially festive. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced families to tone down their holiday celebrations in 2020, the 2021 holiday season figures to feel more familiar. The rollout of a trio of effective vaccines has made gatherings more safe, and that should make for an especially jovial 2021 holiday season. The image of a house full of family and friends no doubt excites individuals

who love to host holiday gatherings. And coming off a year in which no such celebrations were held, it’s easy to see how hosts and their guests might be tempted to celebrate a bit too much. That could prove both dangerous and costly. Overconsumption of alcohol can affect guests’ judgment, both during the party and at the end of the night when it’s time to go home. In addition, host laws could put holiday hosts in the crosshairs of law enforcement if they overserve guests.

Hosts who are determined to have violated host laws could be vulnerable to lawsuits if their guests get into trouble. Hosts must acknowledge and accept various responsibilities when hosting a holiday party, not the least of which is making sure guests get home safe and sound. Hosts can consider these strategies to avoid overserving guests. Hire a professional bartender to serve drinks. The Insurance Information Institute notes that most professional bartenders are trained to recognize signs of intoxication and are skilled at limiting consumption by partygoers. Hosts can benefit from that expertise and training if they hire professional bartenders to man the bar at their parties. Let guests know in advance that bartenders have been asked to monitor each guest’s consumption, and support the bartender should he or she refuse to serve a guest. Host outside your home. A large party at home may create a warm atmosphere, but it also can leave hosts liable in the eyes of the law. Hosting the party at a restaurant with a valid liquor license can minimize hosts’ liability risks. In addition, restaurants and bars tend to be very busy during the holiday season. That means it will likely take longer for guests to order and receive their drinks.

Extra time between drinks can reduce the risk of overconsumption. Stay sober. Hosts can more effectively monitor how much their guests are drinking if they abstain from consuming alcohol. Guests who recognize hosts are not drinking also might be more agreeable if hosts ask them to stop for fear that they’re consuming too much alcohol. Shift the focus of the festivities. When planning the party and inviting guests, look for games and activities that engage guests and don’t promote drinking. Guests are less likely to drink too much if they’re given something to do at the party, especially if the activity has nothing to do with alcohol. Avoid games like beer pong in favor of charades or other activities that require guests to stay sharp. Stop serving alcohol as the party winds down. As the festivities begin to wind down, stop serving alcohol and offer water, coffee or tea in its stead. This decreases the chances that guests will overdo it and gives them a chance to assess how they feel and determine if they can drive home safely. With a festive holiday season in full swing, hosts can direct their focus to ensuring guests stay safe and avoid drinking too much.

Clean Heat

W

inter is a perfect time to think about renovations that bring coziness and warmth to your home. For homeowners who live off the natural gas line, propane is an earth-friendly option that can reliably and efficiently deliver warmer air all season long. “When homeowners upgrade to propane during a remodel, they transform a dream home to include comfort and performance with high-efficiency appliances that have lowcarbon footprints,” said Susan Kadilak, owner of Kadilak Homes, a construction, renovation and interior design firm. “Not only do families stay warmer with propane, they can feel better doing so because it’s clean energy.” If you’re considering upgrades to bring more warmth to your home, start with these tips from Kadilak Homes and the Propane Education & Research Council: * Do your research. Talk with your contractor about what you’re wanting to accomplish. Your local propane supplier is also equipped to help you navigate questions and find the right solution for your home. * Think cozy. If your electric furnace is struggling to keep a room warm, consider upgrading to a propane furnace to get to your desired temperature more efficiently. Propane furnaces blow hotter air, which is more comfortable than the belowbody-temperature air electric heat pumps produce. Propane furnaces also emit up to 50% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electric furnaces, according to the 2018 Gas Technology Institute Report, so you can feel

good about your impact on the environment. * Make your home more efficient. As homes age, small cracks can develop around doors and windows and let cold air inside your home or allow warm air to escape. If the seals around the windows and doors are damaged, invest a few minutes to replace them and spend time caulking gaps. When your home is well-insulated, propane can efficiently keep your home toasty during chilly winter months. Some of the most common clean energy heating upgrades homeowners request include fireplaces, furnaces and boilers. Fireplaces: A roaring fire can be a focal point during the cold winter months. With 5-6 times the heating capacity of electric fireplaces, propane fireplaces are more energy efficient, environmentally friendly, convenient to use and easier to install than wood-burning models, Kadilak said. Some parts of the United States are banning wood-burning fireplaces due to their negative effects on the environment. Propane-powered fireplaces are an alternative that emit less soot and other air-polluting emissions. You can enjoy a toasty fire at the flip of a switch with no ash or soot to clean up and no firewood to store. Many models can also operate during electrical power outages, providing a critical source of heat to the home. Furnaces: There can be a bone-chilling feeling when the furnace goes out in the middle of a cold winter. If your furnace is blowing cold air - or no air at all - it’s time for an upgrade. Before you buy, know propanepowered furnaces have 50% longer lifespans

than electric heat pumps, which reduces their overall lifetime cost for homeowners. Propane furnaces also provide warmer air than other heat sources, at 120-140 F. Boilers: While furnaces rely on forced warm air to heat dwellings, boilers use hot water or steam to raise temperatures in homes. Highefficiency propane boilers offer performance, space savings and the versatility to provide heating, hot water and snow melting. This versatility also extends to the type of heating delivery system propane boilers serve, including hydronic baseboard systems, infloor hydronic systems or forced-air systems where the hot water from the boiler (instead of a furnace) acts as the heat source. 10 Winter Safety Tips for a Propane-Fueled Home If your home uses propane to generate heat or run appliances, there are some simple steps you can take to help keep your family safe and avoid potential dangers this winter. 1. Make sure you have an adequate propane supply. Schedule regular winter visits with your propane supplier so you always have an adequate supply in your tank. 2. Mark the location of your tank with a flag, pole or stake. Ensure it is higher than the average snow cover depth for your location. These markers can help you avoid plowing or shoveling rooftop snow on top of your tank. Should your tank become covered with snow, use a broom to clear it. 3. Make sure your heating system and appliances are running efficiently. Before the start of each heating season, have a qualified service technician inspect and service your appliances and propane system. This can help ensure your appliances are running as

efficiently as possible. 4. Create an emergency preparedness plan and review it with everyone in your family. Post a list with contact information for your propane supplier and emergency services along with instructions for turning off propane, electricity and water. If you need to turn off your propane, contact a service technician to inspect your propane system prior to turning it back on. 6. Check your chimneys, flue pipes, vent connectors and propane tank for damage, blockage or debris caused by snow and ice. Use a broom rather than a shovel and clear these areas frequently to help reduce the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. 7. Consider installing UL-listed propane gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. These detectors can provide you and your family with an additional measure of security. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location and maintenance. 8. After a storm passes and it is safe to do so, check the entire area for downed power lines, damaged gas lines or damage to your propane tank. Immediately call your local utility company or propane supplier if any of these hazards exist. Do not attempt repairs yourself. 9. Never use a stove for space heating and never use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas, particularly in the event of a power outage. Proper ventilation is necessary for safe operation, and the carbon monoxide fumes can be lethal. Only use appliances indoors that are designed and approved for indoor use. Never store, place or use a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area.

Better-for-You Family Favorites for a Healthier Routine

T

aking time to nurture your health and well-being starts with building healthier habits. As the seasons change, challenge yourself to make small yet consistent choices that help you and your family through transitions at school, the office or wherever your days take you. To help you establish (or re-establish) healthy habits during mealtime and beyond, consider these tips. Eat Meals Together “Making time for meals together as a family provides a chance to connect and decompress,” said Bridget Wojciak, director of nutrition at Kroger Health, a national sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good initiative. “In fact, regular meals at home can help reduce stress, boost self-esteem and improve feelings of connection.” Bring everyone together with a better-for-you seasonal favorite like Turkey and Bean Tostadas. Make Time for Yourself Chronic stress can have a negative impact on mental and physical health, but turning lost moments - like a meal by yourself spent mindlessly scrolling through social media into mindful moments can help. Try practicing gratitude at the table by thinking of three things you’re grateful for or putting your fork down between each bite to savor the flavor and consider the nourishment you’re receiving. Enjoy the Cooler Temperatures Cooler temperatures can make it more enjoyable to take advantage of outdoor exercise,

which is a good way to soak in vitamin D to improve your mood and boost immunity. Going for a brisk walk after mealtime (solo or with your pet), jogging and even raking leaves are examples of activities that count toward the American Heart Association’s recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.

Using colander, drain well. Transfer to large bowl. Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly spray 2-quart glass baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Faith Conversations…

Following Confidently

“W

hoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 Have you noticed that life is like a wild ride on a roller coaster? It is constantly going up and down and around — and even upside down. Worse yet, like Disney’s Space Mountain (a roller coaster in the dark), you don’t get to

anticipate what comes next. Life’s sudden twists and turns and drops catch us by surprise and leave us breathless. The sheer randomness of it bewilders us — and we don’t like it. Not one bit. To make life on this wild ride more palatable, we have crafted and adopted a belief that following Jesus and obeying God’s commands will tame the wild out of life — that it will be gentler, you know, more domesticated. It makes sense to us that doing good

leads to good outcomes and security — and doing bad leads to negative consequences and suffering. It’s a fair and just belief system. Preachers like teaching it — Tim and listeners like Hartzell hearing it. There’s just one problem with it: it is not true. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “He (God) causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” Matthew 5:45. In Matthew 13:24-30, He teaches about the wheat and the weeds, the good and the bad, growing together in the field. The fact is, good and bad happen to everyone. We live in a broken world — and following Jesus doesn’t insulate you from trials and tribulations. In fact, following Jesus actually adds more wild to the ride. Jesus drives this truth home in Matthew 10. The entire chapter is summed up in verse 22, “You will be hated by everyone because of me.” Ponder on that statement for a moment.

Moses saw suffering for Christ as the better way. Hebrews 13:26 says, “By faith Moses when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt because he was looking ahead to his reward.” By all accounts, Moses’ suffered a lot. He chose the wild ride of faith over the comforts of this world. While still young, Stephen was stoned to death. The young mother, Perpetua, faced death in an arena over the comforts of family and wealth. You should read her story. Just type Perpetua the Martyr into an internet search engine. Her story is both heartbreaking and inspiring. As old men, Paul was imprisoned and then beheaded, and Peter was crucified upside down because he didn’t feel worthy of dying as Jesus had died. They viewed suffering for Jesus as an honor and privilege. So, what’s our problem? Why do we generally equate suffering with punishment? They certainly didn’t! Our problem is guilt and fear-based

dence! Jesus lived in this confidence as He turned His face resolutely toward Jerusalem. See Luke 9:51. He did the same when He got up from his Gethsemane prayer and confidently faced His betrayer. See Mathew 26:46. Paul confidently embraced his difficulties, declaring that he would boast and delight in weaknesses, insults, hardships, and persecutions. See 2 Corinthians 12:10. in ignorance of the truth. Our belief system lies to us. It tells us that suffering equals punishment, that God doesn’t listen or care, or worse, that He doesn’t even exist. We have no confidence because we have bought into a convenient lie of our own making. Joseph and Job both suffered terribly, not because they were bad, but because God chose them for redemptive purposes. See Genesis 37-50 and Job 1-2. This is a hard but true teaching. If we thought following Jesus would tame the ride, we thought wrong. We should ask ourselves, “What part of ‘deny yourself and take up your cross daily’ are we not understanding?” Obscuring God’s Plan — Words Without Knowledge Job’s wife and friends tried to explain God’s design through the prism of our good=blessed, suffering=punishment belief system. See Job 3-37. You can read what God thought of their wordy nonsense in Job 38-40. Spoiler alert: It made Him very angry. Truth and Confidence For those who follow Jesus, good=redemption, and suffering=redemption. Regardless of what you are experiencing, God is working out His sovereign will of redemption. What to Expect in Travel in 2022

fter a couple abnormal years, many families are eager and ready to travel together again, and there are indications some pandemic-influenced travel behaviors will persist in 2022. For example, remote work and virtual school allowed families to travel and combine work and vacation time into “flexcation” getaways, a trend that will continue, according to the 2022 Vrbo Trend Report. In addition to the 44% of families that said they’re more likely to work remotely from a place that’s not their home, extended stays are also on the rise. The vacation home site and app has seen a 68% increase in demand for 3-4-week stays over the past year. Consider these 2022 trends spotted by the travel experts at Vrbo: Up-and-Coming Destinations Spots in Ohio, New York and Alaska saw double vacation rental

demand over the past year. Within driving distance of major Midwest metros like Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville, Cincinnati was the year’s top emerging destination. Other up-and-comers include Niagara Falls, a popular choice for those who wanted to experience life at the border. Yo r k t o w n , Virginia, the location of the last Revolutionary War battle, a l l o w s history buffs to witness a battle reenactment. Adventurous travelers trekked to Matanuska-Susitna, Alaska, to enjoy the wilderness of Denali National Park and Preserve, breathtaking glaciers and surrounding mountains. Chalet All Day

You may have heard of Cabincore and Cottagecore, but chalets are a trending aesthetic that inspires family travel. Chalets saw a nearly 85% increase in demand year over year. Located on lakefronts or nestled in the woods, these charming and idyllic properties are desirable lodging options for many families. Kids Call the Shots After being cooped up at home, it may be no surprise parents are letting their kids have a bigger say in vacation planning. Compared to prepandemic times, half of the families surveyed said they’re more likely to let their kids decide where they vacation and 43% of parents are more likely to let their kids skip school for vacation. Traveling with the Pack

ive r D r A eile urg, P B 168 ersb Reb

Many families adopted pandemic pets because they had more time at home to spend with their furry friends. Now more people are bringing Fido and Fluffy along on vacation; 68% of pet parents have traveled, plan to travel or would like to travel with their pets. What’s more, there has been a 40% increase in demand year-over-year for pet-friendly vacation homes. Early Bird Bookers If 2021 was any indication, families will continue booking their vacations further in advance. Booking activity occurred an average of 2-3 months earlier than usual for several major travel seasons. Families booked summer travel in February, holiday trips in July and snowbirds got a head start on booking warm weather stays for 2022. In fact, 60% of survey respondents said they plan to book their vacations earlier than they did in pre-pandemic times with nearly half making plans 3-5 months in advance. (Family Features & Vrbo. Billtown Blues Association Announces 32nd Annual Billtown Blues Festival

s we wrap up all of what has occurred in our lives throughout the calendar year 2021, many folks would probably say, “Good riddance!” Upon close review, however, there were no doubt many positive things that occurred during the past year that we can be thankful for. Unfortunately, all of the good was too often overshadowed by

things that were simply out of our control, such as COVID-19 and the all-toopresent political twist to everything! The upside to all of the negatives that dragged us down in 2021 is that on Saturday, a new year begins, and we can each decide how we will conduct our lives in the coming year. A huge step in the right direction for a better outcome in the next 12 months is to create and follow through with some realistic resolutions.

Regarding your health and physical fitness: The number one resolution that most folks make is becoming more physically fit. And it is a great one for sportsmen to adopt. Every year as the fall hunting season begins, there are gruesome discoveries made by hunters — entering the woods in the first few days of the seasons, historically they might come across the remains of someone who has been declared missing. Usually, that missing individual is someone who is not an outdoorsman, not very physically fit, and not prepared to survive very long in an outdoor environment. There are numerous avenues through

for themselves as a result. Pass it on: If you are reading this, you are already someone who knows and enjoys the wonders of our outdoor world. Hopefully, you belong to one or more outdoor-related organizations that help preserve and promote what you enjoy. A valuable step that each of us can make is to mentor someone into the activities we participate in. There could be a young member of your family or a neighborhood youth that would love to learn about the outdoors. There are many adults who never had the opportunity to hunt, fish, or shoot a firearm of any kind that would if someone would mentor them, become avid supporters of any of these outdoor activities. You don’t have to look very far to find someone who would appreciate and learn from your efforts to mentor them and would add to the ranks of sportsmen who may someday be voting on an issue that affects the future of outdoor sports for all of us. What you do or don’t adopt in the way of resolutions for 2022 is certainly up to you. Consider some of the above suggestions, but most importantly, make a few realistic resolutions and then stick to them. Here’s hoping that 2022 brings you health and happiness — with the wind at your back and the sunshine in your days.

Native folks were here on this continent long before Columbus decided to sail the ocean blue. They were members of the Cree Nation, and they shared with me some of their culture, including their high regard and respect for all facets of the World of Nature. I was fortunate to learn from them through their stories and by observing them firsthand during our hunts for mule deer, whitetail deer, and moose. In the end, I was thankful, not just for the delicious venison that I brought home, but even more so for the increased knowledge of and respect for all aspects of nature. Resolve to share the bounty: Over the years, I have certainly enjoyed commercially raised meat, fish, and fowl, but none of it ever surpasses the taste and joy of eating any of the game that I have taken myself. Along with knowing I am eating something that is free-range, devoid of government-approved chemicals, and simply better for you than store-bought products, there is also the reflection of the hunt or fishing trip that enabled me to bring home such great protein for the dinner table. While it is very rewarding to dine on your own harvests, it is often even more enjoyable when you share the meal with friends, and particularly when you introduce a non-hunter or non-fisherman to the pleasures of such a feast and they become interested in trying out the sport

Finding Fish on Frozen Lakes

W

inter is beginning to set in, and as most of my readers know, I don’t let the cold and snow keep me from one of my favorite pastimes — fishing. While you can still hit some open water on rivers and streams, I’ll concentrate most of my time on frozen lakes. When I was just a kid just getting into

ice-fishing, I had my doubts that you could actually catch fish in the dead of winter, but it didn’t take me long to find out that you can have some pretty good action standing on a frozen lake. I still run into people who find it hard to believe that fish are often active feeders even with a one-foot barrier of ice, but the fact is — they still eat even in that bitter cold water.

As always, of course, to be successful on the hard water, the first obstacle you must overcome is to know where to look, and like Ken any fishing expeHunter rience, that can be a daunting task at times. I will say this, however, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that when looking for potential fishing spots on frozen lakes, you can probably narrow down your options and head for the deeper water. Most fish species will head to the deeper water, which eliminates a lot of water; that’s a good thing because your ability to move about and fish on a frozen lake is far more limiting than when cruising in your bass boat. While heading to deeper water will likely put you over fish, the next question is how far down in that deeper water will you find them? That brings up another

question, “How deep is deep?” On some lakes I fish, I hit bottom at fifteen feet, and on other lakes, I may be looking at a depth of 20-30 feet. To further complicate things, fish will often suspend at different depths; for example, it’s not unusual to find crappies or bluegills suspended at fifteen feet while fishing over 20 feet. You may even find several schools suspended at several different depths. When I started ice-fishing back in the 60s we didn’t have much to work with — no electronics — so, we explored the depths by dropping our baited fishing rigs down the ice hole and working different depths until we got some hits. Once we got a strike, we would continue dropping our lures and baits to that same depth until the action stopped, and then we were off on another search. The process worked, but it could be very time-consuming trying to constantly locate the best depth to fish. Well, things have changed from the “old days,” and like everything

sonar unit that can be utilized in ice-fishing situations. There’s a lot of equipment available today for those who want to get into the activity of ice-fishing, but to be honest other than an ice-fishing rod, the next thing I would want to accompany me on the ice would be that sonar unit. In the days to come, we’ll take a closer look at what is needed to put fish on the ice and maybe even into the skillet.

else we find in life, technology has ushered in some interesting and worthy devices such as sonar devices. Some of the earliest sonar utilized a simple round screen with numbers around the screen indicating the increasing depth. A mark would indicate the bottom, and any thinner lines above that would indicate a fish or schools of fish. These units are still popular today, but other companies have entered the market. I have a Humminbird sonar unit that allows me to use the flasher type screen, or I can switch to a continuous graph that shows the bottom contour and marks that indicate fish. If I have the unit set close to the hole I’m fishing in, I can actually watch my lure drop down into the school of waiting fish. By the way, that action may often result in a strike, but it is by no means a guarantee you’ll get a hit. The bottom line is if you want to have more success, or at the least be successful more quickly, you should look into purchasing a

Hopefully, a Happy New Year!

I

n the days leading up to Christmas, Jim Webb and Steph Nordstrom gathered the Webb Weekly team for a holiday luncheon. It has been an annual tradition since the publication was begun nearly 20 years ago. The pandemic wiped out the event last year, so it was nice to once again have an opportunity to touch base with fellow writers and staff, most of whom we don’t often see during the year.

As you can imagine, stories of all kinds filled the room. Ken Hunter was promoting his idea for a Webb Weekly ice fishing tournament. Tim Hartzell recounted stories of parishioners his church had gained after reading his weekly column. Andrea McElroy shared the delight her recipes were generating, and Larry Stout revealed the anecdotal circumstance that led him to the pages of the paper. Everyone

chimed in, and for a few hours, things seemed normal like they were two years ago when we were last together. But as we enter the final days of 2021, hoping that things Scott will be better in Lowery the year ahead, it is a bit like we are in a twilight zone as a year ago; we were hoping 2021 would emerge much better than what we had experienced in 2020. As Father Time is about to hand over his symbolic duties to Baby New Year, he did provide us with some memorable local sporting accomplishments worthy of reflection. Pennsylvania boys’ basketball all-time wins leader, Loyalsock Townships Ron Insinger, was able to finally capture that elusive state championship. Tom Gravish kept his Jersey Shore Bulldogs growling with another district title and a trip to the state semi-finals. South Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner continued her reign as the state’s tennis queen winning her second consecutive Class AA tennis title. The Penn College golf team became

the school’s first team to compete for an NCAA national title. A bevy of scholastic squads thrilled their fans with impressive performances, many of which will be remembered with end-of-the-year media stories. I’ve never been one to make New Year’s resolutions, but most certainly have recollections of the year past. I remain appreciative of the South Williamsport Area School District, athletic director Scott Hill, basketball coach Joe Simon, and softball coach Tom O’Malley for their support in allowing me to remain a part of the district’s sports family. It is a labor of love I greatly enjoy. I am grateful to Jim Webb for the opportunity to share my views on the local sports scene with all of you each week. I admire the dedication and the behind-the-scenes efforts put forth by area athletes and coaches that make Lycoming County such an enjoyable place to witness athletic competition. Athletes and teams overcoming hardships have always been stories that grab the rooting attention of sports fans, and rightly so. Personally, the hardships encountered by three individuals close to me have had me rooting the hardest.

his accomplishment in leading the downstate Mid-Penn Conference in interceptions. As the Junior High School softball season was drawing to a close, Mountaineer coach Tom O’Malley encountered a serious leg infection that took him off the field. His young charges rallied to win their final two games and kept their coach updated on their progress. Following weeks of rehab, O’Malley, who just celebrated his Christmas birthday, is on the mend and looking forward to the upcoming spring season.

Last year I was privileged to have longtime friend and former Lock Haven University basketball standout, Dean Kriebel, join me on the South Williamsport Junior High Basketball coaching staff. As always, we shared a lot of fun and enjoyed a successful season with the future Mounties. Just days before practice for this year’s team was about to begin, Dean shared indications of not feeling well. In the subsequent weeks, he has turned in his whistle and clipboard to deal with a much more important health game plan.

Free Loaner Cars We accept All Insurance Repair All Makes & Models

Despite his own dilemma, he has taken the time to call me, talk basketball, and wish our team well. Dean, and wife Amy, have done so much through their Andrew’s Special Kids Foundation to think of and help so many others deal with life’s hardships. I’m asking for your help to join in and root for a victorious outcome as Dean faces the challenges ahead. Enjoy your sports, hug your loved ones, do all you can to stay safe and healthy and this time, let’s really hope 2022 will treat us all much better than the year we are leaving behind.

As I have related in a past column, this fall, my daughter-in-law Angie Lowery endured a month-long battle with COVID-pneumonia that included 13 days on a ventilator. As she faced the biggest battle of her life, grandson Tucker provided the family with some much-welcomed smiles with his performance on the football field that helped lead his Big Spring team into the District Three playoffs. Her recovery, to which the doctors described as VERY lucky, came just in time for her to participate in Tucker’s Senior Night and witness

My sincere apologies for last week’s helping, and I could tell you some absence. I had to deal with a minor stories. South Williamsport is in good family crisis. There simply are hands, folks. Trust me. The place not enough hours in the day. This was packed, and it had an electric part-time mobile freelance scribe atmosphere. Both teams played well, was feeling overwhelmed. The St and we witnessed a very entertaining John Neumann Golden Knights game. SJNRA nipped their rivals 85and many others opened up their 60. Our guards are outstanding.

We were back on the court that Thursday. It was a non-conference game with our brothers from Wilkes Barre/Scranton. Holy Redeemer is legit, and they exceeded all of my expectations. They were the only squad to give Loyalsock a loss last season. A lot of those guys were back, and man, were they impressive. Neumann got off to a blazing start. But we ran out of gas. Our shots didn’t fall in the second half. The Royals made life miserable. They were good. It was a terrific game for us early in the year. We lost 53-39. Relax kids. The Knights will be just fine. The Loyalsock Lancers are off to their usual great start. The defending state champs have several new faces, but they are still the top dawgs. Expect big things for Senior Saraj Ali. The versatile 6’5” forward knows how to play the game. CI and his Lancers lost their opener but bounced back with an impressive 61-56 win in OT over Trinity. I am excited to see the Millionaires. Coach Allen Taylor sure has some size. Williamsport plays stifling

defense. They are holding their opponents to under 45 points thus far this season. Their offense is getting better. And I am glad to see that my alma matter is back. Coach Nick Tagliaferri and I have been buds for a very long time. He is the best in the business, and his Spartans are tough. Tag has a scrappy group that plays with some heart. Hughesville is currently 4-1, and they are already battle-tested. Forward Carter Cowburn is a stud. The big fella is averaging a doubledouble early on. Yes. It is a wonderful time of year. Hopefully, I will get a chance to see you in a local gym — best wishes on a successful season, boys and girls. My fingers are still crossed. Happy New Year. Cheers.
