Happy New Year!

ow! I can’t believe that it is 2022. It seems like yesterday that I was hired on as a temp to take over for a temp that was sick. Now here we are 20 years later, and I have a position that not-even-old-enough-to drink-Steph could have only dreamed of! This year we begin our 20th year. There are some arguments about this in the office. So let me explain. We began in mid-January of 2003. That was ‘Volume 1’. So, while technically we won’t hit our 20th anniversary until January of 2023, this week begins our 20th volume. Make sense? Yeah, I don’t really get it either. Just think of it the same way we calculate centuries — year 100 began the 2nd century… We’ve made a fair number of changes here over the years, but at our core we are still abiding by the same philosophy that we started with. A family-oriented publication that strives to bring you all the good our community has to offer. Thank you for sticking with us for the last 20 years. The unwavering support we get from the community never ceases to amaze me. As we roll into another year, I once again send out the call for your contributions! If you, or someone you know has a great story to tell, please let me know! If you, or someone you know has done something amazing in or for our community, please

Area Student Seeks Living Kidney Donor By Dave Bellomo Area middle school student, Maddy Fausnaught, was diagnosed with a kidney disease called focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), which began at age seven after a bout with pneumonia. FSGS is a type of disease where scarring takes place in small sections of each glomerulus (filter) in the kidneys. Because the scarred glomeruli cannot be repaired, FSGS is a chronic disease. Treatment can slow the process of kidney disease; however, everyone is different in how they respond to treatment. Over time, some patients with FSGS gradually lose function until they reach kidney failure. If this occurs, those suffering from FSGS require a kidney transplant or dialysis to survive. Over the past several years, the scarring in Maddy’s kidneys has increased, which has caused her kidney function to drop considerably. She is currently at Stage 4 chronic kidney disease (which is the last stage before kidney failure) and was referred for a pre-emptive kidney transplant. The goal is to get Maddy a transplant before she needs dialysis as it will offer a better outcome. In addition, a live kidney donor would be best because it would reduce her time on the organ

transplant list, and there would be no need to wait. Despite her serious condition, very little slows down this scholar-athlete whose favorite sport is basketball. She also runs cross-country and track. “Doctors are amazed that she still can participate in these sports and have stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD). In May of 2021, she broke her L5 vertebrae running track. We didn’t realize it until a few weeks after she mentioned she was in pain. We all just thought it was a pulled muscle,” said mom Karen. All of this shows how tough Maddy truly is. Maddy continued to compete with her injury in the 100 meter, 4x100 meter relay, long jump, and triple jump. Her injury occurred at the end of track season and ultimately caused her to miss the Altoona Championships for which she qualified. Doctors believe the CKD was the reason for the broken back due to low calcium and Vitamin D levels and Hyperparathyroidism. “Maddy is a fighter. You wouldn’t know it from looking at her that she has Stage 4 kidney disease. She puts on a good show for others. However, at home, the fatigue really sets in,” said Karen. Certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies are common in children with CKD

not a direct match for Maddy. However, I am participating in the Advanced Donation Program. I am giving one of my kidneys to a man in North Carolina on January 5th at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. In exchange, Maddy will receive a voucher that prioritizes her for a living donor and moves her up in the National Kidney Registry.” Unfortunately, FSGS recurrence after kidney transplantation is a major risk factor for graft loss. Therefore, Maddy may need multiple transplants in her lifetime. The public can help by sharing Maddy’s story and Facebook group #RedKidneyStrong, where information on becoming a donor and forms needed to start the donor process can be found. For additional information, Karen Fausnaught can also be reached by private messaging through this Facebook group. Another way people can help is to donate to Camp Kydnie, a non-profit summer camp dedicated to providing oneof-a-kind experiences for children with kidney disease. Every summer during a week in July, children who have kidney disease experience a unique opportunity to meet other children with kidney disease in a safe, supportive and fun environment. Over the past several years, Maddy has attended Camp Kydnie, where she has formed lasting friendships, improved her self-confidence, independence and created special memories that will last a lifetime.

due to lack of appetite. These deficiencies can also cause extreme fatigue. “It is not uncommon for her to come home from practice, take a shower, and immediately go to bed. All before 6:00 p.m. The fatigue and lack of appetite are her biggest hurdles right now,” said Karen. To help raise awareness about Maddy’s condition and to help her find a donor match, her family created the Facebook group #RedKidneyStrong. “The Red is for Maddy’s nickname. Since birth, we have called her Red because of her red hair. Kidney Strong because over the past six years, Maddy has proven how tough she really is — countless doctor appointments, 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinions all over the country — Boston Children’s Hospital, National Institute of Health (NIH), Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Geisinger, and UPMC. Taking numerous drugs daily, regular blood draws (sometimes weekly depending on her medicines), drug trials, and a broken back. She even spoke at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., on behalf of the organization NEPHCURE to advocate for more kidney disease funding. Doing all of this while still attending school, maintaining honor roll status (two grade levels ahead in math), and playing on Williamsport sports teams (cross-country, basketball, track, and field),” said Karen Fausnaught. “Maddy needs a Type O donor between 18 and 55 years old. or the new year, I had in my mind an article to identify the area that could possibly have the longest impact on the future as a result of the past two years of government action in relation to the COVID virus. I am afraid the winner (actually loser) would be the negative impact on our children because of our nation’s schools’ measures

to curb the spread of the disease. I found some very strong support for my conclusion. Margaret Brennan was hosting CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, December 26th, and asked five expert guests, “What is the most underreported story through 2021.” One of these guests was Jan Crawford, a television journalist, author, and attorney. She serves as a political correspondent and chief

legal correspondent for CBS News and previously for ABC News, and one other important fact, she is the mother of four children. Crawford took to the question like a hungry bear. She severely

condemned the “crushing” restrictive measures that public schools have used to deal with the Coronavirus. She made it clear, “They will be paying for our generation’s decisions the rest of their lives.” What basis did she base this on? “I mean school closures, lockdowns, and cancellation of sports. You couldn’t even go on a playground in the D.C. area without cops shooing the kids off,” Crawford said. “Tremendous negative impact on kids, and it’s been an afterthought. It’s hurt their dreams, their future, learning loss, risk of abuse, their mental health.”

COUNTY HALL Is this hyperbole or prophecy? Surprisingly, even the left-leaning New York Times and the Los Angeles Times have both printed editorials expressing the same concerns. The NY Times quoted the author and journalist Glenn Greenville, “School closings and ‘remote learning’ have caused a massive mental health crisis among teenagers. This, and the disruption to their intellectual development, will be enduring and severe.” Echoing this was Dr. Sina Safahieh, child and adolescent psychiatrist, who wrote for the LA Times, “COVID-19 has precipitated a mental health crisis, fueled by social isolation,

collapse of routines and structure, and increased uncertainty about the future.” Actually, anyone who looks at the data would come up with the same conclusion. Teen suicides, suicide attempts, emotional trauma from isolation, failure rates, drug usage, and more have all spiked dramatically since the “two-week closure to flatten the curve” in March of 2020 has turned into a two-year rollercoaster for our nation’s students. And it has not just been in the educational realm but also all the other elements that make up a school experience. Sports activities, club events, extra-

curricular happenings of all sorts have been disrupted or canceled. The benefit of these in terms of social development cannot be underestimated. When we think back to our high school days, how many of us remember more about our sports or clubs or entertainment activities than we do what chemistry class in 11th grade was like? What makes this almost criminal is that the educational establishment is well aware of the impact that inconsistency has on learning. I have found studies dated back to 1906 on the negative impact that ‘summer break’ has on student development. These studies show that students lose roughly one month of learning over the summer. Every study done on teacher strikes has shown the severe disruptions they have on the learning process, especially those in their early years. Even economists have noted that each additional year of schooling yields a return over an economic lifetime of somewhere around a ten percent return. Now calculate what the loss of a year of learning is worth to a child’s future. Learning comes from development skills, and skills come from practice. When that practice is sporadic, skills suffer, and learning lingers slowly behind as well. The simple, personal interaction that takes every day in a school environment has been radically distorted due to the COVID disruptions. Yes, it is true that virtual communication is by far

their favored means of connection, but everyone knows that nothing can replace personal interaction. The disruption of COVID is the only explanation for emotional trauma we are seeing, especially in the nearly doubling of suicides and suicide attempts of teens in the past year. And unfortunately, the fruit from this tree will be found years and even decades from now in those young people who are suffering through this now. Just as the Greatest Generation learned grit, perseverance, and determination through the terrific difficulties, they went through during the depression-ravaged ‘30s and war-torn ‘40s, so these children will become the Jilted Generation for all that has been denied to them, all for prevention of less than one-in-a-million chance of catching the disease. One last thought: One of my new year’s resolutions is to make sure I get all my facts straight, especially when it is to honor the best of people. In my article last week on “The Fantastic Fraternity of Firefighters,” I wanted to not just honor the firefighters but also the company Ground Shakers in Muncy that transported the fire truck to Kentucky. (The picture of the truck in that article was on their hauler.) The owner of the company is Travis Kropp and Nicholas Snyder was his sidekick driver. I inadvertently switched them, which I sincerely apologize for. They are both heroes in my book, but Travis is the boss, and his sacrifice deserves recognition.

for work, church, or a casual dinner. Even if you aren’t hitting the gym here this season, activewear makes a great base layer while also acting as shapewear. A high-waisted yoga legging and sports bra crop top underneath pants and tees can work just as well as thermal underclothes or hose and a camisole. Just be mindful of whether your mid and out layers will completely cover your “gym” clothes if that’s a concern. If you don’t mind the sight of workout leggings standing in for tights under a dress, then, by all means, layer away! Lastly, most times, your outer layer will be your standard winter coat; you may have 2 or 3 to switch things up, but not a coat for every outfit. Get creative with accessories for your outer layer. Hats, gloves, and scarves can switch up the look of a coat, as do pins and broaches and the bag you carry. You can even get creative layering accessories. Tie two scarves together to create one oversized scarf, wear earmuffs over a fitted knit beanie, or style fingerless wooly gloves over slick leather ones for some playful takes on your outer layer. I wouldn’t recommend doing all three in one look, but hey, who among us hasn’t entertained a few kooky ideas in the dead of winter. Hopefully, these layering ideas will get you into the winter spirit while keeping you warm and protected. Just remember, layers should work together but also as standalone pieces without being too bulky. Easy!

go with slouchy or wide-legged pants. A turtleneck and knit blazer complete your professional look, and you can accessorize with a statement pendant necklace. For the outer layer, go with a dress coat if it’s warm enough, or wear a more durable puffer/waterproof coat if that’s what the forecast requires. And while snow boots may not be appropriate to wear in the workplace, they will very much be needed to get to your workplace. Stash them under your desk and change into a heel or loafer after you settle in. If you’re able to get outside and enjoy a fresh winter morning in the coming months, a functional outfit is a necessity. For non-snowy winter walks, I like the idea of hiking cargo joggers with a Henley-style shirt, a hooded sweatshirt, duck-boots, and finished with a ‘shacket.’ A shacket is a shirt thick enough to be halfway between a shirt and a jacket. If you plan to be in the snow, switch out the joggers for thick leggings, leave the shacket at home, add some snow overalls, a heavy-duty coat, and swap duck boots for snow boots. On occasions that call for a dress, a shirt dress works as a versatile mid-layer. You can create a base with a turtleneck and tights, wear your dress belted or unbelted, then extend the mid-layer with a cardigan, blazer, or denim jacket, and have your coat, hat, and gloves as your outer layer. I like layering a plaid shirtdress with a leather belt and knee-high boots

he new year is looming, and thoughts of resolutions may be on your mind. The gym might be more crowded and you might have healthier items on your grocery shopping list. While these kinds of resolutions work well for some people, they might not be for everyone and for many people, just putting in a little extra effort can improve their wellbeing. What matters most is picking resolutions that truly fit your personal needs and lifestyle going into the new year. The last thing you would want is to get burnt out within the first few months. If you need a little extra help to get motivated in choosing some new and unique goals for 2022, you’re not alone. Resolutions for Mental Health Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Below are a few suggestions to help support a better mindset. Make your bed every morning: This simple act helps set your day up to be productive and positive. Try a new hobby: New hobbies allow you to focus on something other than your usual day-to-day worries. If you’re trying to learn to play a new instrument or master a new craft, you can’t be consumed with thoughts

of work or maintaining your home. Keep a journal: A journal is a great outlet to help release your thoughts in a constructive way for whatever emotion is consuming you at the moment. Be kind to yourself: It’s really true that you can be your own worst critic. Give yourself a break and start out small with giving yourself one compliment a day to help boost your confidence. Resolutions Dealing with Interpersonal Relationships and Your Health The following resolutions focus on how some social activities can affect your health negatively and why you should limit partaking in them. Avoid the gossip: Not only is it hurtful for whoever is the subject of gossip, but it negatively impacts your own health as well. Gossip increases the likelihood of experiencing anxiety and depression. Both disorders can affect your physical and mental health. Practice forgiveness and let go of grudges: Letting go of feelings of resentment or anger can help decrease your blood pressure and even strengthen your immune system. Avoid complainers and try not to complain too much:While complaining is sometimes a method of sharing our feelings and frustrations, consider how you are affecting those you are complaining to. Being around negative people can give you headaches,

Connie Simmons, 6-8 and Sweetwater Cliffton 6-6, literally batted the ball down Billy Throats on attempted layups, while Galletin was a demon under his own boards. FAITH

But on occasion, we do need to be reminded that we have an enemy who is determined to devour and destroy. If we lose our focus, we will fall into his many traps. We must remain diligently aware of his schemes and intentions — and we must remain on the attack. Before I go any further, I want to be very clear on one unchanging and unshakeable truth: God is sovereign. Period. There has never been a question mark over that truth. There are no boundaries on the Kingdom of God. He rules overall. Always has, always will. See Romans 14:11. The devil is nothing more than a miserable entity, who, under God’s sovereignty, has been given a season to test us — to sift us like wheat. See Luke 22:31 and Job 1-2. The devil is already condemned, and the date and time of his final annihilation in the lake of fire has already been set by Almighty God. This isn’t a war over sovereignty; it is a war over you and your holy po-

tential. What I am sharing with you is hard to hear. I understand. So, let me encourage you. God has set limits on the devil. God will not allow the enemy to test you beyond what you can bear. See I Corinthians 10:13. God will always provide you with a way to escape so that you can endure whatever attack the enemy throws at you. This is God’s promise to you! Be at peace and take heart! Warfare There are two components to any battle, offense, and defense. The same is true in spiritual warfare. And since the best defense is a good offense, let’s start by talking about what it means for the Church to be on the attack. Vision Since Jesus has already assured us that the gates of hell cannot prevail against the Church, then we should be very intentional in taking the battle to the enemy. We should not be standing around wringing our hands in fear over what the devil is going to

ably focusing too much on defense and survival — and that’s not good. Get your Church on the attack, and you will find passion return to your local Body of Christ. Division The enemy’s greatest weapon against us is division — and it is working well. He’s got us arguing about everything and anything. We’re so busy trying to prove we’re right and everyone else is wrong — well, it’s just plain ridiculous. Instead of working together, we’re constantly competing with each other to prove which Church is the best. It must bring great pain to the heart of God and to Jesus, the Head of the Church. In John 17, Jesus prayed passionately that His followers would be one. If you haven’t read that chapter in a while, then I strongly encourage you to do so. Our division gives the devil an easy win. This is why we must enter into warfare prayer. There is much more to be said, but I’m out of room. May 2022 be a year of great spiritual victory. My dear friends, with faith, with God, we can!

Instead, we should be making plans to attack enemy strongholds and to bring God’s glorious light into the darkness. We call those plans vision. True vision can see strongholds crumbling, chains broken, and prisoners set free. A Christian with a vision is a force to be reckoned with — and a church with a vision is unstoppable! Friend, what is your vision? How have you determined to use the resources God has placed in your care to attack the strongholds of the enemy? Do you have an intentional plan? If not, then it’s time to make a plan. If you’re focusing solely on how to defend yourself from attack, then you’re missing the most important part of the battle plan. It’s time to go on offense. Does your Church have a vision? How is your Church attacking the strongholds of the enemy in your mission field? Do you have a visionary plan? Are you fully implementing that plan? espite the continuing nuisance of COVID, it was a successful 19th Annual Festival of Trees held recently at the Lycoming Mall. The event raised more than $15,000 for the local unit of the Salvation Army. Volunteer auctioneer Michael Roan auctioned off numerous decorated trees sponsored by local businesses. The Trail Inn of Cogan Station received the People’s Choice Award, and Professional Lawn and Landscape Co. of Trout Run was deemed “Best of the Festival.” The Salvation Army will present both businesses with plaques in January to thank them and recognize their accomplishments. The public determined the People’s Choice award winner by voting for their favorite tree with monetary donations at the Lycoming Mall and sponsoring businesses. The ornately decorated Trail Inn tree was the runaway winner for the People’s Choice Award, receiving twice as many votes as any other tree. The Best of the Festival award recognizes the tree that raises the most money overall to support The Salvation Army’s local programs and services. Professional Lawn

and Landscape Co. was the “Best of the Festival,” bringing in more than $1,000. This year 36 local businesses and organizations participated in the Salvation Army’s Festival of Trees, decorating trees, and donating accompanying incentive packages. The Lycoming Mall hosted the tree display from November 21 through December 10. On December 10, Mike Roan, of Michael T. Roan Real Estate, auctioned off all the trees and the incentives near the mall’s center court. The auction drew approximately 150 attendees, including more than 50 registered bidders. In total, the 2021 Festival of Trees raised more than $15,000 — about twice the amount raised in 2020. “We are both delighted and humbled by the generosity of the local community,” said Major Sheryl Hershey, Williamsport Corps Officer/Pastor, told Webb Weekly. “The proceeds from this event enable us to continue bringing help and hope to our neighbors in need—both during the holiday season and throughout 2022.” “Our special thanks to event-level sponsors Backyard Broadcasting, the Lycoming Mall, PA Skill by Miele Manufacturing, and Roan Real Estate,” said Lt. It’s something we started two years ago enjoy a good meal. and never stopped. We would In the summer, we spend a lot go to church on Sundays, of time at the river, so we love to pack lunch and head out on then come home and figure the boat for the day. We didn’t out what to have for lunch. It make big breakfasts much over was usually grilled cheese and Andrea the summer because Sundays, tomato soup, tacos, pizza, or McElroy something on the grill during we weren’t home much, and of the summer months. One chilly fall course, napping and being lazy on the day, I decided to do pancakes, eggs, and couch doesn’t often happen because bacon as a late brunch. We all enjoyed there is always something to do during it so much, and Tyler asked if we could those months. But for Father’s Day, do it again the following Sunday. We the kids and I surprised Chris with a never quit. Blackstone griddle, and we were at the Now, it’s not pancakes and bacon river that weekend. Needless to say, every Sunday. I do switch it up. So, it didn’t come home. Each Sunday, one Sunday, it will be French toast we whipped up breakfast faster than and sausage, and the next week might we ever did at home! Pancakes, eggs, be homemade breakfast sandwiches bacon, done in a flash. We were hooked. “Mom, can we do breakfast every with home fries. Baked oatmeal, omelets, and breakfast casserole are Sunday morning at the river now?” Ty other favorites too. There is nothing asked. (He is my breakfast kid!) That griddle didn’t come home and like going to church when it’s cold out, coming home to a big hearty breakfast, stayed in the back of our Yukon until then taking a nap or lounging on

October with all our river supplies. We were in love! This sure changed summer Sundays for us and was such a treat to have to serve many people throughout the weekends. Breakfast used to be my least favorite meal of the day, but now it’s my favorite. Six days out of seven, I eat healthy breakfasts. I love my protein shakes, eggs, oatmeal with protein powder, Greek yogurt with granola and berries, multigrain English muffin with a smidge of peanut butter, or on occasion, turkey bacon or sausage. Man, would I get a hankering for pancakes, though, when I had some turkey bacon! I found a healthy pancake recipe, and dang, it was good! My family even loved them. Being it’s January, and many of you are probably on the bandwagon of health and fitness coming into 2022, I thought this was a perfect recipe to share. They freeze very well, and you don’t need to feel bad about these babies at all. They pair well with turkey bacon and a nap. You’re welcome! Healthy Pancakes Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup milk (your choice) • 1 banana • 1 1/2 cups of rolled oats (I used Quaker Quick Oats) • 2 eggs • 1 tsp vanilla • 2 tsp baking powder • Some honey or other sweetener Directions: Mix in a blender or really well by hand. Cook on medium heat. Flip after 2 minutes — cook 1 more minute on the other side.

Kent Krueger (Atria, $27.00), which takes readers back to 1963, and a murder in small-town Minnesota. Cork O’Conner is a young teen then, the son of the local sheriff, and he knows that Big John Manydeeds couldn’t have possibly hung himself. But how does a boy go about proving something like that? For fans, that’s a can’t-miss question. For new fans, it’ll send you racing toward the rest of the Cork O’Conner series. Watchers of “The Handmaiden’s Tale” will absolutely devour “Outlawed” by Anna North (Bloomsbury, $26.00). In a small corner of Texas, at an unstated time, seventeen-year-old Ada is struggling to give her husband children, which embarrasses him, and that’s something only witches do. And so Ada is cast out of the community and heads north, to safety, where barren women are outlaws. This dystopian, feminist Western is dangerous and delicious. “Raft of Stars” by Andrew J. Graff

BOOKWORM (Ecco, $26.99) is a coming-of-age story of two boys who are best friends, and one of them is abused by his father. Tired of seeing his friend hurt, the other boy shoots the man and both boys run away to escape what surely will be legal trouble and maybe even jail time. They’re running toward a lie, though, and they’re heading for a waterfall they don’t know is there. This is one of those books with heartbreakingly beautiful prose in a story that’ll leave you with

For every kid who grew up with a pile of comic books next to the bed, in a drawer, or in the closet, “American Comics: A History” by Jeremy Dauber (W.W. Norton, $35.00) is a must-have. Here, Dauber follows comics from their political roots to today’s activist cartoons, and how we went from Katzenjammer Kids to MAD Magazine to comix as we know them. The bonus is that Dauber puts comics into fascinating historical perspective. Did you buy your lottery ticket this week? If you did, it’ll make a

In “The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano” by Donna Freitas (Pamela Dorman Books, $26.00), one woman has many options in her life, each one ending in a way she never thought possible. BOOKWORM in love with the boy who abused him, and the father who did, too. It’s a coming-out tale that’s sometimes funny and always graceful, one that will sometimes make you gasp, and that you’ll be glad you read. You know that feeling you get when you come across a stack of old magazines in the attic? That gentle, hometown, old-time feeling is extrarich inside “The Ride of Her Life” by Elizabeth Letts (Ballantine, $28.00). This is the story of Annie Wilkins,

aging, ailing, and alone, and the audacious cross-country ride she decides to take on a horse she’d just purchased. This feel-good story is set in the 1950s, and its neighborliness might make it be the perfect antidote for today’s world. Lastly, “The Redemption of Bobby Love” by Bobby and Cheryl Love with Lori L. Tharps (Mariner Books / HMH Books, $28.00) might be the most unusual memoir you read this winter. As a young man, Walter Miller

ran away from a prison bus and to New York, where he renamed himself Bobby Love and went into hiding in plain sight. Love kept to the straightand-narrow, fell in love, got married, and raised a family but forty-some years later, the law caught up with him. This astounding, impossible story, told alternately between both Loves, is one you’ll..... um, love. Children’s Books Based on a real event (the Mexican Revolution), “The Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna” by Alda P. Dobbs (Sourcebooks, $17.99) is the story of a

young girl who becomes responsible for her Abuelita and her little sister when the Federales destroy their village and their home. This causes the trio to run north, one step ahead of those who wish to kill them, on a race to reach the border and make it to America. It’s an exciting read for 8-to-14-year-olds. Kids who love silly stories will enjoy “Egg Marks the Spot: A Skunk and Badger Story” by Amy Timberlake, the second in what appears to be a series. A whirlwind named Skunk and his very staid, very reticent

of the spine, Violet & Daisy were “adopted” by a woman who ruled their lives. When she died, the girls were passed on to that woman’s heirs, who mishandled their careers and left them nearly penniless. This is a thrilling tale of legalities, Vaudeville, and two women determined to make their own ways, despite that they were conjoined forever. It’s the perfect read for any 14-and-older reader, including adults who love memoirs. So now, get to the bookstore. Hunt at the library. Don’t miss these excellent books for adults and kids!

For teens who enjoy unique memoirs, “Violet and Daisy: The Story of Vaudeville’s Famous Conjoined Twins” by Sarah Miller (Schwartz & Wade, $17.99) is the story of the Hilton sisters and their careers and lives. There are also tons of books, magazine articles, videos, and DVDs to guide you in your planning and execution. The NWTF (National Wild Turkey Federation) is very active in our area, as are the NDA (National Deer Association) and the RGS (Ruffed Grouse Society). In this realm, they have many publications and personnel available to help direct you in the proper development of your plan and its execution. Keep in mind that no matter what you do to better the food sources or cover for one species will most often benefit numerous other species as well. Most conservation organizations have their own biologist on staff. It is often possible for them to visit your property and help outline what can be accomplished and how to accomplish it. Numerous government agencies are offering different programs that will assist a landowner in developing and executing a plan, and they may also provide financial assistance. Two programs that come to mind are the CREP (Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program) and EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentive Program) programs. The CREP program can cover some of the initial develop-

The goal is to reduce erosion that may occur when actively farming such ground, and the program is generally offered on a 10 or 15-year contract. EQIP has been established to provide financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers to help plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns and provide opportunities to improve water, soil, plant, and animal and air resources on agricultural land. Whether your goals are to create some immediate income through a timber harvest or improve the long term value of your timber stand, or you want to add to the current cover available for wildlife use, or you are thinking about adding to the food sources for deer, turkeys or grouse by planting soft and hard mast-producing trees and establishing food plots, there is a great deal of expert advice at your fingertips – and it is yours for the asking. Probably the biggest difference is the fishing rod and reel. Actually, when it comes to ice-fishing, length of the rod. When ice-fishing, there is another device besides the you want to be close to or actually rod and reel for hooking up to fish on nearly right over the hole; therefore, a the hard water, and that is something short rod is needed; I’m talking two feet called a tip-up. PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. For the first 17 callers we are offering a Nerve Pain Evaluation for only $47 Receive: • A Thermal Image Scan to see your nerve damage • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being, where we will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • Where indicated, a full set of specialized x-rays • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to minimize your neuropathy symptoms. Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with

bobber size to the fish you are after. When panfishing through the ice, I use just a big enough bobber to keep it on the surface, and at the slightest movement, I set the hook. Since you are allowed to have five devices in icefishing, I will often set three tip-ups out nearby and then jig with two rods-it can get busy at times. outfit. Today they make small spinning outfits just for ice-fishing-the rods and reels are reduced in size and work well for ice fishing. Broken flyrods work well, too; remove the broken rod from the handle and then attach the rightsized tip into the rod handle; you can even use the fly reel if you replace the fly line with monofilament. In recent years I’ve been using more of the newer ice-fishing outfits-they look like miniature fly-fishing rigs; the reel actually resembles a fly reel and works similarly. I like these outfits because the reel is mounted on the handle like a traditional fly outfit; therefore, my fishing hand is in front of the reel, giving me more “feel” when it comes to detecting strikes. I generally prefer to fish without a strike indicator; I simply lower my presentation to the desired depth keeping the line tight; a tight line is important since I rely on the feel of the tap or strike. The biggest mistake I see people make is to allow slack in the line; thus, a strike cannot be detected. I’ve also found that same situation to be true when fishing in open water in the summer; slackline doesn’t tell you when the strike occurs. You may also use a small bobber but adjust the

Big East – Fox - $500 million – 41.6 million per year The Big East landed a large twelve-year basketball coverage deal with Fox in 2012. The contract is relatively low because the Big East has no football programs. 6. SEC – ESPN - $2.25 billion - $150 million per year The ESPN contract runs through 2024,

Sporting Matters With Spence…

The MAGIC Dome

T

his past week, my 12-year-old son asked if I would take him and a buddy to the Loyalsock and Williamsport game. I checked my schedule, and we were scheduled for an early practice. I was thinking about doing some scouting but eventually caved. We loaded up the Jeep and made a quick stop in the 17728. Jensen and Owen Newcomer were busy in the back, and I was reliving some fond memories. The place was already packed, and I see they were redirecting traffic to the auditorium lot. Thankfully the folks from this part-time gig hooked me up with a press pass.

HI. JAMIE SPENCER. I AM WITH THE WEBB WEEKLY. I know who you are, Mr. Spencer. I read your columns. Right, this way. SCORE. That simple gesture made my day. It also caused a stir for the 7th graders in the car. Perhaps for the very first time, Jensen thought his dad was a cool guy. I can’t possibly tell you the number of times I stepped foot on this floor. Nor can I describe those euphoric feelings when I walk through the door. It still looks and smells the same. You see, this court and I go back a long way. I practically lived in

this historic gym back in the day. I started as a fan and eventually became someone who occasionally got to “participate” in practice. OK. I could totally fib and insert a few bogus stat lines, but unfortunately, I was the Jamie ninth man on an eightSpencer man rotation. We went on to the state final in ‘95, and I was along for the ride. I did score 12 points in a game in just three minutes of PT, but for the most part, I had the best seat in the MAGIC Dome for my entire scholastic career. Yes. I do have the box score. Truth be told, Coach only kept me around because he knew I’d help boost the overall GPA. He also told me that I was an integral part of the program. I was the only guy who had access to a car, and I would often give my teammates rides to and from practice. I always wanted to coach when my playing days came to an end. Oh, what an honor it was to lead my Montoursville Warriors to victory over the mighty Millionaires back in ‘08. That night still ranks as the top in my many sporting moments. It was so very special to return last year with my St. John Neumann Knights to capture a DISTRICT 4 crown in front of my friends and family. I also got to cover many games for WRAK Sports and PASPORTSLIVE. It was a lot of fun while it lasted, and I always enjoyed

broadcasting in the MAGIC Dome. Williamsport Area High School is the bomb, and I am very proud to be an alum. I was busy shaking hands and kissing babies. It was good to see so many familiar faces. I ran into a pair of old teammates, and I also entertained many questions. Jensen and Owen got bored and sat with their friends. I was alone and decided to chill by myself in the “cool guy” corner. The stands were packed. It reminded me of the old days. I had no dog in the fight, but I was hoping for an entertaining game. This is a great rivalry. The atmosphere was electric. Both student sections were a blast. Williamsport played extremely well in the second half and nipped their rivals 60-44. JJ Beagle was fantastic. He scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. The 6’5” active post has really improved. Kenon Brown had a nice game. He and many other Millionaires looked great. Loyalsock has recently had the PORT’S number. Senior All-State forward Saraj Ali sure worked hard for his 21 tallies. Williamsport has now won four straight games. They shared the ball and hustled on defense. Fun night out. There was definitely a buzz in the MAGIC Dome. Now I have seen many impressive venues. Played, broadcasted, and coached in hundreds of cool courts. But these places don’t hold a candle to my all-time favorite gym. I may be biased, and I know that several would agree. I have nothing but love for Williamsport Area’s MAGIC Dome. Fantastic place.
