2.7 Seconds on a Bull Named Fumanchu

A

line from Tim McGraw’s hit song “Live Like You Were Dying” is the title of this week’s column. We are all mortal; for some of us, the end will come quick; for others, we’ll have that moment that stops you in your tracks, as the song says. None of us want to think about it. Back in mid-November, within my column titled “OORAH Recognition and Veteran Thanks Given,” there were smiles for many reasons. It covered my good friend Hal Gee, the United States Marine Corps, and the 307 true American Heroes that attended our Annual Veterans Day Breakfast. Thanks again to C.I. and all the great people at Dolly’s for teaming up with us for the event. The second part of my column on 11/17 was a “Big Buck Double Down” featuring Dean and Lacey Kriebel. The daddy/daughter duo harvested a pair of beautiful bucks on back-to-back days. Dad Dean was more than proud of Lacey. Her smile said it all as she had her hands on the antlers of her first trophy buck. The picture that ran right next to Lacey’s was daddy Dean and his monster buck. You can see a little extra twinkle in Dean’s eyes as his buck was bigger. Dean is very competitive. Mom, Amy, was the first to reach out to me with pictures and the story; the best part of the whole story was I got to talk to all of them. I’ve known Dean Kriebel and Amy Barger as outstanding athletes, especially basketball players, from many moons ago. I’ve known them personally as they’ve grown older and are raising their family, especially in recent years, and consider them friends. They just don’t come much better than the Kriebel family.

Shortly after that Big Buck Double Down, I ran into Dean at Winner Hardware; he was going bear hunting with a group. We talked about hunting, the kids, and boots. It was great to see him as always. We wished each other good hunting and a Happy Holiday Season and parted ways. About a week later, Dean was fighting for his life. By the time the information made it back to me of what happened to Dean, and the fight he was facing, Scott Lowery and I caught up with each other at our Webb Weekly Christmas luncheon. Scott, a longtime friend of Dean and the family, confirmed the devastating news. It was that type of news that stops you in your tracks. That just takes over your thoughts and brings you to prayer for those involved. For those that do not know Dean, he is about 6’ 8, is one of the most competitive folks you’ll ever meet, and has that true stick-to-itiveness spirit. He loves being a father and was at this point in his life when Lacey was to get her first high school basketball start, which made him very happy, and son Andrew was going to soon be celebrating his 21st birthday. Amy and Dean have made it their lives’ work taking care of Andrew. The family recently discovered that Andrew doesn’t have Angleman Syndrome as they initially thought. He was newly diagnosed with an extremely rare gene mutation recently found in humans. When it was discovered, Andrew was one of seven people in the world with this mutation and he was the oldest. There is no official name for the mutation yet, but will most likely be named after the Canadian scientist that discovered it. You can learn more about Andrew and their foundation at askandrew.org. It is

amazing to me out of this most difficult situation how Amy and Dean have not only taken care of their son but also created Andrew’s Special Kids Foundation to help others dealing with difficult Jim Webb, Jr. problems. Amy is truly an amazing lady; if there’s anybody that can support her husband through this difficult time and continue on with her life’s work, it is definitely her. Back to being in the fight for his life, Dean was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma type B. Shortly after the last time I saw Dean, he was hospitalized for 11 days; he nearly lost his life as his organs began to shut down due to an off the charts amount of calcium in his blood caused by the disease. He would like to thank UPMC’s doctors and staff for their efforts in turning around this dire situation. This, along with his unwavering determination to live, has allowed him to begin chemo treatments. He just completed his 2nd round, and when I talked to him last week, he was full of piss and vinegar and ready to take on the world. During our conversation, there were a few things Dean wanted me to share. His words, not mine, but beliefs I’ve written, especially during the past couple of years. If you are not well, seek immediate medical attention. Do not let COVID, or the fear of COVID, deter you in any manner. Dean tested negative at home for COVID; he did not want to be at a medical facility exposed to COVID by seeking help. This waiting nearly cost Dean his life. Thank God Amy made him go. Please get to the doctor if you’re not feeling well. Next, and maybe most importantly,

L acey, and Andrew with Amy and D ean at a B ucknell women’ s open g ym in Octob er.

never take life for granted. We only get so many days, and the clock is always running. Take advantage of your time, and don’t miss out on any special moment or opportunity that presents itself. Always make sure to take a moment and to share your love with your family, friends, and loved ones. You never know when that time may come that you can’t tell them how you feel, for whatever reason. And lastly, be kind and caring to your fellow man even when it’s difficult. This led to Dean being overcome by emotion as he asked me to thank everyone for the outpouring of support for him and his family. He has heard from people from throughout his journey through life, some he had no idea cared so much. My thoughts and prayers are with the Kriebel family. Thank you, Dean, for the conversation and sharing so much with us during your fight. Just before sending the paper to press, I talked to Dean, who had just gotten off the phone with his doctor. Everything is going very well, and he is cleared to return to light exercise. God Bless America.

ccording to the American Red Cross, National Blood Donor Month, which has taken place each January since 1970, is such an important observance. Winter is “one of the most difficult times of year to collect enough blood products to meet patient needs.” Busy schedules, bad weather, getting dark early, and COVID concerns are all keeping people away from blood drives. Donating blood saves many lives and improves health for many people. According to the World Health Organization, “blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person — the gift of life. A decision to donate your blood can save a life, or even several if your blood is separated into its components — red cells, platelets and plasma.” Per a joint release from the American Red Cross, the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB), and the America’s Blood Centers, “As the blood community celebrates National Blood Donor Month this January, the nation’s blood supply remains at one of its lowest levels in recent years. In recent weeks, blood centers across the country have reported less than a oneday’s supply of blood of certain critical blood types — a dangerously low level.

980’s rock bands that were known as “Hair Bands” such as Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Guns and Roses and Poison, just to name a few, will be saluted by the Uptown Music Collective in a fundraising concert to be presented at the Community Arts Center on Saturday, January 29, 2022, beginning at 7:30 p.m. This is the Collective’s “People’s Choice” show, the result of fans casting their votes in the summer of 2021. All proceeds from this concert will be going to support the school’s scholarship fund, as well as its class and workshop initiative, which is offered free to all students. “Our students are thrilled to perform this exciting music,” said Dave Brumbaugh. “We are so lucky to have the ability to create fundraising events like Nothin’ but a Good Time that feature the ‘product’ of our programs — our student’s musical, performance, and leadership skills — and to share them with the community that chose the theme and also supports us,” UMC founder and executive director, told Webb Weekly. He added, “This is the first time

the school has dived into this genre of music.” “The people’s choice performance has become an annual fundraising event for the Uptown Music Collective,” said Jared Mondell, assistant executive director of the Uptown Music Collective. “This year, ‘80’s Hair Bands were the community’s top choice after several rounds of voting in the Collective’s 2021 People’s Choice online voting event, winning out by a narrow margin over a virtual who’s who list of modern and classic rock or pop performers. Our students are extremely excited to bring this music to life on the CAC stage while raising money for the school!” Nothin’ but a Good Time will feature Collective students who have been diligently preparing for this event for more than two months. Along with the music, there will be a professional-grade light and sound show organized by the students themselves. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers but also direct the show. A group of younger students, or “Tech Monkeys,” will serve as stage technicians and spotlight operators. The cast for the show

This show is very energetic, and I am so excited for everyone to see all the hard work we are putting into it.” “This show has seen about ten different setlists, lots of bands, and, after many decisions and long leadership meetings, I think the final product is going to be killer,” Batman said. “This show is unlike anything the Collective has done before!” According to the Uptown Music Collective website, their mission and goal that states in part is “to provide exceptional modern music education grounded in traditional educational principles. Our program engages students through an emphasis on modern genres such as rock, pop, country, blues, rhythm and blues, and funk. Still, our students appreciate all music, gleaning from their studies the importance of proper technique, discipline, respect, teamwork, responsibility, communications, community, and leadership. “As they embrace an ownership of their craft, our students are positioned to lead and support their younger and/ or less experienced peers. This cycle of learning, combined with our professional staff and teachers, has grown into a family of musicians who are all com-

mitted to our highest ideas – community, leadership, integrity, and music. This show is sponsored, in part, through partnerships with Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Hudock Capital Group, and UPMC North Central PA. illiamsport club women made their first definite move last night to enlist themselves in the cause of women’s suffrage. The organization of the nucleus of a committee, which will disseminate suffrage sentiment and make plans for holding a big women’s mass meeting sometime within the next six weeks, was effected under the direction and chairmanship of Miss Mary Bakewell of Pittsburgh, a vice president of the State Suffrage Association of this state. Miss Bakewell spoke to the Clio Club and many friends yesterday afternoon of Women’s Suffrage and the close of her address asked that as many women as were in sufficient sympathy with the cause to desire a local working organization, meet with her again in the Clio room at 7:30 o’clock. At that

hour 16 women appeared, and the entire number became a committee which will seek to interest others. Officers of the committee were elected as follows: Chairman, Miss Mary Elizabeth Crocker, vice chairman, Miss Anna Gilmore, secretary, Miss Clara F. Sebring, treasurer, Mrs. John C. Reading. The others on the committee include Mrs. Robert Fleming Allen, Misses Gertrude Roos, Mildred Maynard, Ann Doebler, Emily Ebling, Henrietta Lyon, Mrs. Newton Chatham, Mrs. Robert F. Gibson, Mrs. Charles Scott, Mrs. Howard Cheney, Mrs. Perry Myers and Mrs. W.B. Lightner. The committee under Miss Crocker’s leadership will hasten to find out the sentiment of many other club women and non-club women of the city in regard to suffrage and at once enlist their interest in the calling of a mass public meeting.

Just look at that sweet face! Rascal, a sevenyear-old Terrier-mix, is content to lie at your feet. He enjoys doing his own thing and hanging out with his favorite people. He is looking for a home with children older than fourteen and maybe a canine sibling. With his laid back attitude and teddy bear looks, ascal is sure to find a forever home this winter.

Olaf the rabbit, the color of fresh snow, would love to watch you build a snowman, from the comfort of his cozy house, of course. Olaf thinks that a day filled with hay and napping is just the best day ever. He came from a rough situation, but he has turned the corner, and is now ready for his forever home.

County Hall Corner: Leading and Learning at the Same Time By Larry Stout

S

cott Metzger could arguably be considered one of the best prepared Lycoming County Commissioners given his three decades of experience in the Adult Probation Department, half of those years as Deputy Chief, as well his lifetime experience as a business owner. Seeing from both the government and business sides of the coin, Scott is also well educated and has dedicated innumerable hours in community service. He has been recognized twice by Lycoming County for Humanitarian and Volunteer awards for his efforts. It was not a surprise that Metzger was the highest vote-getter among nine candidates running for County Commissioner in 2019. This entitled him to become chairman of the new board that held its first meeting on Thursday, January 9th, 2020. I remembered that meeting well, as Scott Metzger opened the meeting with a stirring prayer and a list of priorities for Lycoming County in the coming year. Obviously, he wanted to shake up the status quo and move the county forward. I watched every county commissioner meeting through that year and the next, either at the meetings themselves or online. Considering the number of highlights and struggles through the numerous challenges of these past couple of years, I believed the board did

about as best they could. What was their perspective? I interviewed Commissioner Metzger to get the impressions of his first couple of years in office. He instantly noted the impact COVID had on everything, every walk of life. Yet, rather than using this as an excuse, he stated that it was simply a hurdle to jump over. Metzger stated his primary focus has been on improving the business environment, for this is the engine that powers the economy and rebuilds a community. The reason why this is so critical is because Lycoming County has been losing population, and this has been primarily because of the lack of job opportunities. Yet the opposite is also true; economic growth also needs a viable labor force. Too many young people have left the area to secure jobs, yet there are a growing number of opportunities right here. the county they live in because I know that these people are only as good as the people that surround them.” There have been disappointments, of course. Metzger noted how much he wished to be able to attend local government meetings but preferably as they begin to meet in person once again. “Local government is where things can be accomplished. The township supervisors and borough council members know better than anyone what is the heartbeat of their communities. I want to listen and have that dialogue so they know the County can be a partner when possible. Every community that succeeds helps to make Lycoming County a place where people want to call home.” Looking ahead, despite COVID and the other challenges, Commissioner Metzger is excited about the future. It was because of people like Loren “Digger” Graber, CEO of the Indiana-based Digger Specialities, Inc. He was considering opening his new company in North Carolina but saw the possibilities that were here in Lycoming County. Charlotte, North Carolina, was known for NASCAR but rebranded itself into an economic hub. Digger Graber saw Williamsport in the same light — famous for Little League, but potentially could be much, much more, and he wanted to be a part of that. A growing community requires a growing economy, which is highly dependent on good government. Scott Metzger is an instrumental element in this equation, and we all are the better for it.

15 • Webb Weekly January 19, 2022

county commissioners have recently visited three outstanding companies that are looking to hire. And there is more good news on the horizon. Commissioner Metzger was quite excited about the business environment in recent months. He cited Timber Run Industrial Park across from the county landfill, where Digger Specialities, Inc., an aluminum and vinyl coating products manufacturer, will be opening their new facility in a few months, hiring some 150 new workers. There are ongoing negotiations with other companies that could possibly double that number. Businesses are attracted by a strong infrastructure, which will be considerably improved with better broadband. Metzger noted that progress is being made with a four-county initiative working through SEDA-COG (the economic development agency that assists 11 central Pennsylvania counties). He hopes to see this take shape in the near future. When asked what gives him the greatest satisfaction, Commissioner Metzger answered without hesitation that it was celebrating people. Watching this take place time and time again in the commissioners’ meetings, I knew he was sincere. Be it Boy Scouts, successful business owners, local agencies, fire companies, or dairy queen princesses — the joy seen in his eyes, as well as Commissioners Mussare and Mirabito, demonstrates that this is probably the thing they enjoy more than anything else. Metzger noted, “It makes me proud to share in their celebration. I feel honored to live in

they will still look great in three weeks when your nails have started to grow out. You can use black polish or a light shade but stay away from using a nude polish with this treatment because it appears less intentional and has less impact. If you’re usually a fan of nude nails, try switching things up here this season with a tonal manicure. This is a super easy method; choose five colors from the same color family; they could be neutrals, pastels, or jewel tones. Then paint your nails from lightest to darkest. You can match each hand with the same colors on opposite fingers, like pinkie to pinkie, or create a spectrum across your hands, where your right pinkie and your left thumb are in the same shade — either method results in a super trendy look. Looking for something more festive? Try glitter nails. Glitter polish is the perfect way to have your nails stand out and can elevate basic all-black outfits into dressier looks. You can go with multi-colored glitter polish or simply coat your standard color with a glittery top coat for a sparkly finish.

Not really feeling a particular color? Then just paint nails with a sparkly base for some low-key shine. And while glitter nails are definitely a trend for 2022, let it be understood they never really go out of style. Not much into shine, but still wanting to have a standout manicure? Then try experimenting with minimalist nail art. While nail art can sound overwhelming, thinking about artificial nails with flowers and chains, or intricate graphic patterns, minimal nail designs are meant to be simple. Minimal nails usually have a nude base with a small feature. Think of a nude nail with a single dot in a contrasting color. Or white nails with black strips down the center. Or simply reverse your French manicure to be at the base of your nail instead of the tips. This trend has endless possibilities, allowing you to be as creative as you’d like. Whether you get regular professional manicures, are new to nail polish, or prefer to paint your nails yourself, consider trying one of these trends to mix things up here this season.

I explained to her I was cleaning out our fridge, and she went over to open the door. Her eyes got huge. “Oh my gosh! This is a perfect place now for hide-and-go-seek!!” she exclaimed. I told her that it could be very dangerous and never climb in something like that if she saw an empty appliance. I explained that everything was getting put back in, but I needed to pull everything out to give it a good cleaning. Man, I felt like I had a brand-new refrigerator. I was even flipping our deli drawer to the right side instead of the left to switch things up. Can I just say I was impressed with myself that I figured out how to put everything back once it was apart? I had a few shelf holders fight me and questioned if this went here or there, but I never once had to call for my hubby. Our refrigerator is “typically” pretty organized by each shelf, but now it’s very organized. The following weekend I pulled all the drawers out of our bathroom vanity, washed them all out, and took everything out of the bathroom closet. I was on a roll! Organizing is like a snowball effect; once you get that feeling of one drawer or closet cleaned out, you want just to keep going. Like I said, just tell yourself one project a week between now and the end of March! Think of how accomplished you will feel. Below I’ve given you a very simple but delicious dinner idea, so that way, if you spend a day, or even just an afternoon getting some things done, you have a meal you can

throw together in ten minutes! Dinner will be done for you, and it gives you more time to get that extra drawer or two in. *wink wink* It’s OK; you can thank me later. Garlic Herb & Wine Chicken & Beans Ingredients: • One McCormick’s seasoning packet of Garlic Herb and Wine • 2 lbs. of chicken cut into strips, or halves • 1/2 lb. of fresh green beans Directions: Make seasoning according to package. Clean and cut chicken, and place chicken into a bowl. Pour seasoning over top of the chicken, and let marinate in a bowl for at least an hour or more, making sure chicken is coated. Then, place the chicken into a 9 by 13 casserole dish. Scatter the green beans on top. Bake at 325° for 45-60 minutes, toss the green beans in the juice halfway through. This chicken is also amazing on top of a nice green salad.

To Sir, with Love: A Tribute to Sidney Poitier

W

hen Sidney Poitier died on Jan. 6 at the age of 94, he left behind a body of work as weighty, beloved, and ground-breaking as any other actor you can name. Author, director, diplomat, and star of more than 50 films, Poitier was the first black man to kiss a white woman on screen, the first black to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar (“The Defiant Ones,” 1958) — and the first to win one, for “Lilies of the Field” in 1963. During 1967’s “In the Heat of the Night,” Poitier’s character gets

slapped by a white man, then firmly and instantly returns the favor — a moment Peniel Joseph calls “the slap heard round the world.” But the actor’s career got off to an unlikely start. Son of working-class Bahamian parents, he gained U.S. citizenship by being born three months early while the family was visiting Miami. After several menial jobs and a stint in the Army, Poitier failed an audition for the American Negro Theatre — largely because of his heavy Bahamian accent.

Thankfully, an elderly Jewish co-worker spent months having the young actor read aloud from the newspaper. Auditioning again for ANT, Poitier was cast in an all-black “Lysistrata,” shortly thereafter making his film debut opposite Richard Joseph Widmark in 1950’s “No Smith III Way Out.” And the rest, as they say, is history. Having performed in the Broadway premiere of “Raisin in the Sun,” Poitier churned out one incredible film after

another: “Cry, the Beloved Country” (1951), “The Blackboard Jungle” (1955), “Edge of the City” (1957), “Porgy and Bess” (1959), “A Patch of Blue” (1965) and the 1961 screen version of “Raisin.” In 1967, three of his most acclaimed films made him America’s top box-office draw — over John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Julie Andrews, and Elizabeth Taylor. First came “To Sir, with Love,” with its gorgeous title tune by Scottish pop star Lulu; Poitier plays a tough British teacher in a school filled with mouthy and obstreperous kids — who are nonetheless won over by his unswerving courage and devotion. Next up: “In the Heat of the Night,” a

POITIER

virtually perfect film that was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning five. Poitier stars as fiery Philadelphia homicide detective Virgil Tibbs, who solves an ugly Mississippi murder even as his every step is dogged by vicious racists seeking to kill him. That same year, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” cast Poitier opposite Hollywood legends Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. They play upper-class San Francisco parents facing their daughter’s romance with a black man; a mere six months before the film’s release, interracial marriage had still been illegal in 17 states. Together with “Lilies,” these are the films fans recall most fondly. But I can also strongly recommend “The Defiant Ones.” Nominated for a whopping nine Oscars, it stars Poitier and Tony Curtis as escaped convicts charging across the forbidding American south while handcuffed together; Curtis’s character — a bigoted redneck, and Poitier’s — don’t take crap from anybody. In a rare move for the Academy, both men were nominated for Best Actor — and the film’s ending reverses the “white savior” trope long before that term became familiar. As journalist Lesley Stahl put it in her 2013 interview with Poitier, “his typical character was dignified, proud and ethical — upright, well-educated and often stronger than the white people around him.” Poitier took some heat for his

insistence on playing people who seemed too good to be true, but as he told Stahl, this was a deliberate choice as he strove to break stereotypes for black characters and to serve as a role model for others in his wake. Poitier also told Stahl that he had it written into his contract for the Tibbs role that he would return the white man’s slap and that this scene could never be excised no matter where the film was shown. Later in life, Poitier did some directing — including a trio of lesser-known but very funny comedies in which he starred opposite Bill Cosby. He served on the Disney board (1995-2003) and as Bahamian ambassador to Japan (1997-2007); played both Thurgood Marshall and Nelson Mandela on TV; was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II; wrote three autobiographies and a novel; and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. His passing elicited a flood of tributes from the likes of President Biden, Morgan Freeman, Oprah Winfrey, Ron Howard, and Harry Belafonte, among many others. Vanity Fair hailed him as “the Martin Luther King Jr. of the movies,” and Hollywood Reporter summed it up this way, “Poitier was the first actor to star in mainstream Hollywood movies that depicted a Black man in a non-stereotypical fashion, and his influence, especially during the 1950s and ’60s as a role model and image-maker, was immeasurable.”

SHOULD I HIRE A REAL ESTATE AGENT? Five reasons you should consider hiring a real estate agent to buy or sell a house.

Now, you may be thinking, “Of course you’d say that, RE/MAX.” Fair enough. Let’s put some hard numbers behind these claims. FAST FACTS: 41% of Canadians claim they aren’t knowledgeable when it comes to buying or selling real estate, according to a 2021 RE/MAX survey. 33% of all homebuyers in the U.S. are first-time buyers, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. 31% of all homebuyers in the U.S. felt they made no compromises in the home they purchased, National Assocation of Realtors 2021 report. That means 69% likely made concessions when buying a home. The topreported compromises were price, condition and size of the home. All this to say, there’s a lot to consider when engaging in the real estate market. It’s a huge financial and emotional commitment, so doing your due diligence is key to finding a great place to live and making a wise investment. Of course, homebuyers and sellers have the choice to go it alone, but here are five great reasons to go with a pro instead. 5 reasons to consider hiring a real estate agent to buy or sell a home. 1. Guidance through complicated process. A real estate investment has a lot of moving parts. While most homebuyers and sellers will endure this process a handful of times, an experienced real estate agent may handle dozens of transacations - every year.

Did you know? Every 30 seconds, a RE/MAX agent helps someone find their perfect place. Once you’ve found a home or a buyer, the buyer will submit an offer. When you’re sure it’s a good deal (you are confident that it’s a good offer, right?), A contract will need to be drafted and signed by the buyer and seller. Remember, if it’s not in the contract, it doesn’t count. A real estate lawyer can help with this step of the process if needed. A benefit of working with an agent is that oftentimes they already have a lawyer that they work with regularly, ensuring all legal matters are handled correctly and in a timely fashion. Furthermore, real estate agents abide by something called “fiduciary duty,” which means they are obligated to put their clients’ interest first. If you’re working with a real estate agent, you can rest assured that your agent is working to help you reach your real estate goals. 2. Market knowledge and comparables. Arguably the most important part of every real estate transaction is the price. For homebuyers, knowing the market value of a home will help you make a competitive offer and a wise investment decision. For sellers, nailing the right asking price from the get-go can mean the difference between a quick sale and a stale listing. Your real estate agent will analyze comparable sales in tandem with their knowledge of current market fundamentals, such as housing supply and demand, mortgage rates and economic conditions. This will help you and your agent form a sound strategy. 3. Leverage industry connections. One indicator of a successful real estate agent is their connections - and a factor that also impacts your own success, as a homebuyer or seller. On the buying side, your agent will have the scoop on the latest listings, sometimes before they even officially hit the market. Once you’ve found “the one,” your agent can also recommend a mortgage professional, home inspector, real estate lawyer, even moving companies to help with the transition.

Now consider connections from a sellers perspective. An experienced agent may have a pool of potential buyers for your property, along with access to a network of agents and their respective pools of buyers. And to toot our own horn here, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has never heard of “RE/MAX,” with 140,000 sales associated in more than 110 countries worldwide. (Toot, toot!) 4. Access to the right tools and resources. Granted, this benefit depends on the agent you choose, and the brand they choose to affiliate with. But ultimately, every real estate agent’s objective is to help you buy or sell a home. In order to achieve this goal, your agent should have an arsenal of tech tools and resources. At least, they do if you’re dealing with a RE/MAX agent. RE/MAX sales associates have comprehensive education, technology and ongoing support available to them when they need it. RE/MAX affiliates are highly skilled and educated - in fact, RE/MAX leads the industry in professional designations and they have the latest tools and technology at their fingertips, and they’re motivated to put this knowledge and experience to work for you. 5. The bottom line. According to a 2020 report by the National Association of REALTORS, For Sale By Owner (FSBO) transactions typically sell for less than agent-assisted transactions. FSBO homes sold at a median price of $217,900, significantly lower than the median agent assisted sale price of $242,300. Need we say more? Of course, we all know there’s more to a home than the money. Whether you’re buying or selling, the transaction is often accompanied by a flood of emotions - excitement, anticipation, anxiety, uncertainty. Maybe you’ve decided to sell the first home you purchased, where you started your family. Perhaps you’re buying a home for investment purposes. Regardless of your reason, your agent has your back. It’s their job to keep a level head, even when yours feels like it’s spinning. Call RE/MAX West Branch today!

Real estate has been a hot topic across the U.S. And Canada in recent years, from sky high valuations and bursting bubbles to bidding wars and supply shortages. Compounding that are federal election factors on both side of the border and COVID-19 clouding conditions in housing markets worldwide. Add to this the “typical” intricacies attached to a real estate transaction. If nothing else, these are reasons enough to consider working with an experienced, profession real estate agent, but there are many other benefits to consider.

is important, set a date and do it. If the goal was unrealistic, change it to something more achievable. Maybe we don’t need to set any goals at all or even make any changes. Maybe we simply have to be kinder to ourselves and accept ourselves for who we are right now. Don’t stress yourself out this year by setting the same monster goals you set every year but never achieve. Instead, make a real effort to make meaningful changes on a daily basis that will improve your life and make you a better person. Self-improvement is not just goal setting but also about actually living and enjoying life.

Fresh, Healthy Family Meals Recipes to help boost iron levels, aid plasma donation recovery

hef Nate Appleman knows how important it is to serve healthy meals to your family - ones they actually want to eat. Before having his first child, he transformed his eating and exercise habits and lost 85 pounds to get on a healthier path. Now, he’s cooking meals for his family, including 14-year-old Oliver who was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease as a toddler — an inflammation of the blood vessels that can cause damage to coronary

arteries - as a healthy lifestyle is important to help manage the disease. Since Oliver’s diagnosis, Appleman made it his personal mission to create awareness of Kawasaki Disease and for the critical need for plasma donations that many people with the disease rely on for treatment, which is why he partnered with Abbott to bring attention to the need for plasma donations. Plasma is a powerful part of your blood that supports essential bodily functions. It’s a lifeline for thousands of people who

are immune-compromised and live with a variety of chronic and complex diseases. In fact, more than 125,000 Americans rely on medication made from plasma every day, according to the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA). The COVID-19 pandemic led to a serious shortage of plasma donors - average donations per center in the United States were down approximately 11% during the first few months of 2021 compared to the previous year, further deepening the nearly 20% decline in donations in 2020 compared to 2019, according to the PPTA. Donating plasma is a safe and relatively easy process. Since plasma is replaced in the body within about 24 hours, it can be donated up to twice per week. With a donation that typically takes between 1-3 hours, you can make a lasting impact by providing lifesaving medicine for patients like Oliver. It’s a good idea to fuel up with ironrich foods before and after donating, so Appleman created these fresh, nutritious recipes he loves to serve his family: Marinated Skirt Steak, Lemon Chicken with Roasted Red Onions and Potatoes, and Cheesy Frittata with Veggies. index or pop around and look for a new and fascinating interest. And before you think it’s all play, get this: at first glance, the articles inside “An Answer for Everything” might seem fluffy or frivolous, but a second look will show you that more than just a few consist of serious information. There’s learning going on here but for sure, whatever you read in this book is fun stuff to know for anyone ages 10 to adult. If these books don’t quite fit your criteria for light reading, be sure to ask your favorite bookseller or librarian for help. They’re superheroes at this kind of thing; they’ll know exactly what you want to read next and asking them for help, well, it just makes sense.

Where, for instance, has James Bond been in the world? How many chickens are there? And what’s so great about Meryl Streep, anyhow? These, and other burning questions are yours for the knowing with this book. Is it possible to find another planet exactly like ours? How many people (give or take) have been to space? Is it ever too late to do something awesome? Is it ever to late to know that? This book is one of those you want to leave in that place where you always seem to have time to spare, because every page is browse-able. Just dip in here, tuck in over there, and read any one of the page-or-two entries. Not interested in a subject? Then flip the pages or check the

you can’t quite find the right way to say it, “Absurd Words” is the book to read. Its mishmash of entries will take overused cliches out of your sentences so your audience will know you’re not a poltroon. Rejigger your writing! Boggle those who say you don’t speak well. Speak, orate, postulate, the whole shebang! Become an abecedarian in almost no time at all and have fun doing it, with this book. It’s perfect for kids ages 8-and-up, and for adults who love wordplay. Once you have a humongous vocabulary, you can then know everything worth knowing by reading “An Answer for Everything” by Rob Orchard, Christian Tate, and Marcus Webb (Bloomsbury, $25.00).

Yarrington’s presentation will explore strategies for achieving full hop flavor and aroma in hot wort while keeping bitterness intensity aligned with stylistic targets. He says while coldside hopping is attracting a lot of attention, understanding the art and science of hot-side hopping can make the difference when pursuing wellbalanced, well-structured recipe design for more traditional beer styles. The webinar is geared toward hop growers interested in engaging brewers, moderately advanced to advanced hobby brewers, aspiring commercial brewers and active commercial brewers lacking formal brewing education. Yarrington, will share his expertise in a free Penn State Extension webinar, set for 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19. Coordinated by Penn State Berks, the talk, titled “Managing Bitterness When Pursuing Significant Hop Flavor and Aroma in the Brew House,” has already registered nearly 100 viewers. “It is encouraging to know interest in the science and technology of brewing is gaining momentum,” Yarrington said. “I welcome any opportunity to engage a curious audience and, hopefully, expand their understanding and appreciation of the complexities involved in making truly excellent beer consistently. Almost any time I present a talk of this nature, I hear the comment, ‘I had no idea ...’ from several attendees. t the start of a new year, it’s customary to make a new goal or resolution. Some of the most common are related to eating healthier or dieting. While these resolutions are set with good intentions, it can be hard to know how to get started and maintain this new lifestyle. Don’t Overcomplicate Your Diet Eating nutritious foods is one of the best ways to take care of your body. Sometimes a few simple reminders are all you need to make healthier choices. – Eat Whole Foods: Diets that contain processed foods high in unhealthy fats, sodium, sugars, and other additives often lead to conditions like heart disease and obesity. A few simple swaps can help. For example, you can try 100% whole-wheat bread instead of white bread. – Rethink Your Drink: Instead of soda or sugary juices, choose water when you’re thirsty. Even making the switch from morning Frappuccinos to drip brew coffee can help avoid extra calories. – Make a Colorful Plate: Fruits and vegetables are whole foods that can help you feel full while consuming less calories. Try to include them with meals and snacks. They are an easy way to make your meals more nutritious and flavorful.

– Don’t Skip Treats: While the overall goal may be to eat healthier, it’s not to punish or restrict yourself. It’s OK to eat your favorite dessert or snack every once in a while. Moderation is key, and if you don’t give yourself a break now and then, it is unlikely that you will be able to maintain healthier eating long term. Have a Plan Knowing what to do ahead of time can give you the confidence to follow through with your health goals this year. – Weekly Meal Plans: Taking the time to plan your meals is well worth it. Going to the grocery store with a list of meals and ingredients helps you stick to your new eating habits. This will help you avoid making random purchases of unhealthy snacks or other impulse buys outside of your diet. – Restaurants: You can still go out to restaurants and eat healthy despite the anxiety it may cause. Look at the menu online ahead of time to allow yourself to make an informed decision. Skip appetizers or desserts that can add extra calories. Restaurant portion sizes can be large, so consider bringing home half of your entrée to eat later. Remember to Get Active Getting exercise and eating well are closely connected when maintaining or improving your wellbeing. Being active does not mean you have to play a sport, strain through a

to get started. You can use your bodyweight or even heavy items around your house to start your muscle conditioning. The first step to a healthier tomorrow is acting today. Don’t forget to consult your doctor before beginning a new exercise regimen. This is crucial when starting out as you could accidentally injure or strain your body if you start out at a level that is too high. You can start a conversation with your doctor about your diet who can then refer you to a dietitian as appropriate. April Mase, RD, LDN, is a registered dietitian with UPMC in North Central Pa. workout, or even get a gym membership. Simple options, like taking the stairs or parking farther away from your office for the extra steps, can help get you moving more. When it comes to being active, it is important to consider the two main types of activities and how they affect the body: – Stamina: Stamina is the body’s ability to sustain an activity for a certain amount of time. Activities that strengthen your stamina may include walking, biking, hiking, or dancing. You should aim for 150 minutes per week, or about twenty minutes per day. –Strength: Strength training helps your body build muscle. All major muscle groups (upper, lower, abs) should be targeted within a weekly basis. Remember that buying expensive equipment is not required

The Roving Sportsman… Habitat Improvement - Trees By Jon Pries

W

EXISTING TREES: e have recently discussed doing a survey that identifies the trees currently on your property that provide feed for wildlife, such as oaks, beech, black cherry, walnut, butternut, hickory, and old apple trees. Also, note the existence and location of evergreens that provide cover for wildlife. Use this data to help plan where and what you can do to maximize their benefit for both game and non-game animals and birds. If you can, avoid cutting down any of the cover or food-producing species and work future plantings or food plot developments around these existing trees. Keep in mind that white oak acorns are preferred by game – over acorns produced by any other of our native oaks. Consider daylighting (removing surrounding trees that are taking some of the moisture and nutrients from the target tree) some of these native trees to aid in their growth and hard or soft mast production. Daylighting is particularly beneficial to old existing apple trees. When laying out an area for a food plot, you might leave these trees standing along the edge of the food plot or remaining in an “island setting” in the middle of the plot. Thus, they will receive more sunlight and have less competition from nearby trees, allowing them to be more productive. Pruning out dead limbs and sucker

growth on these apple trees is very beneficial for the tree’s long-term health. It would also be very beneficial to fertilize them twice per year with 10-10-10 fertilizer. PLANTING TREES FOR WILDLIFE: Most birds and animals prefer a variety of food in their diet, so look into what and when the trees you will plant will bear their fruit or nuts. Trees that you are adding can either be planted in an orchard setting, along existing edges of fields or forests, or incorporated in the design of a food plot. Apple, crabapple, American plum, and pear and persimmon trees will produce desirable soft mast. Native flowering dogwoods yield berries that wildlife will eat, and the trees add color to the landscape as their flowers bloom in the springtime. Chestnut, oaks, hickory, walnut, butternut, and American hazelnut trees yield hard mast for deer, turkeys, and other wildlife. With any of these trees that you may be adding to your habitat, it is best to plant more than one in case cross-pollination requires more than one of the species. These new trees will prefer open sunlight, thus doing best in an orchard setting or along field or forest edges or the transition zone between an open food plot and nearby forests. Keep in mind that any seedlings you plant will need protection from browsing by deer or damage by curious and mischievous black bears. A wire cage will protect the young tree from damage from deer activity, and you

nut trees will produce nuts for a duration of a few weeks, but combining these four varieties when planting will yield months of production. may have to consider something much sturdier if bears might be a problem in your area. A spiral cover should be added at the base of seedlings to prevent girdling from rodents. Feed any new seedlings twice each year with a cupful or two of granular 10-10-10 fertilizer. As the seedling grows, the fertilizer should be placed in a circle at the outermost dripline of the branches. Pruning out any damaged limbs, sucker growth, and shaping the tree by pruning will make for a healthier tree. A noteworthy source of chestnut trees is Tree Pro in Indiana (www.treepro.com), particularly because they have hybrid varieties of chestnut trees that tend to produce nuts in the specific months of August, September, October, or November. By the way, the show opens at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, and goes to 8 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a $7 admission fee, and those under 12 and military with credentials are admitted free. Seniors 65 and older only pay $5 on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come by and say hello. 2021 show was canceled due to COVID, but it’s back on track now. As in the past, the show will feature many outdoor products of interest to the outdoors gang. There will be a couple of archery events that will appeal to archers at all levels and ages. The Orangeville Sportsmen’s Club will again offer a B.B. gun shoot, and of course, the Pennsylvania Game Commission will also be on hand. Oh yeah, there will also be a good number of food vendors on hand as well. I plan to be at the show as well, not as a visitor but as an exhibitor; in fact, I have been exhibiting my wildlife artwork at the show for nearly the past twenty years. Each year the show offers

Role Models

Call 570-326-9322

“I

am not a role model.” Spoken 29 years ago by then NBA basketball star and now a TV hoops commentator, Charles Barkley, that famous quote has long been remembered and often referenced. Those six words were the opening line of a 1993 Nike TV commercial during which Barkley went on to say, “I’m not paid to be a role model. I’m paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.”

Although Barkley can’t be confused with an intellectual orator, the message he was conveying should rank high on the list among the best things athletes have ever uttered. Indeed, parents should be the role models, but whether they are or not, their children still look at star athletes as someone they look up to and would like to emulate. As a youngster growing up, my favorite athletes were baseball stars Willie Mays and Ernie Banks, Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas, and

The star of TV commercials and game show hosting the talented QB is the front runner to be named the NFL’s MVP after leading the Packers to the NFC’s top seed entering the playoffs. However, setting an example playing what has been referred to as the ultimate team game is another story. Although under contract with Green Bay through 2023, he chose to boycott the team’s pre-season workouts stating he wanted out of Green Bay. He issued dubious statements pertaining to his vaccination status, later admitting he misled people about the same. His action cost the Packers a $300,000 fine from the NFL, while he received a paltry $14,650 fine for his actions. #2 Antonio Brown, former Tampa Bay wide receiver. The latest chapter in the troubled Brown’s NFL career came two weeks ago when he refused instructions to enter the game and walked off the field during the Buc’s game against the Jets, stripping down to the waist and throwing uniforms items into the stands. Brown’s career is littered with various conduct issues while with the Steelers, Raiders, and Patriots. Brown later admitted, “It probably wasn’t necessary or professional.” #1 Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn Nets He was held out of the Nets’ first 35 games because he refused to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. the Boston Celtics John Havlicek. Their pictures adorned my bedroom walls, and whenever their games appeared on the tube, I was glued to the action. One of my greatest thrills, among so many I have enjoyed over the years, was meeting Scott Banks when he visited Lowery the Little League World Series many years ago. A conversation we shared at Lamade Stadium resulted in Banks inviting me to join him at the Genetti Hotel, where we sat and talked baseball. They were my sports heroes, and although the personal flaws of yesterday’s sports figures were not made known as they are today, to my knowledge, none of these men ever came off as being bigger than the sports they so successfully played. Perhaps the media is at fault, but today all too many of the game’s stars most certainly qualify to Barkley’s words of not being role models. Retired TV late-night host David Letterman was famous for his top ten list covering a wide array of timely topics. The following is my own top three list of current sports figures whose actions live up to Barkley’s words. #3 Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

quarterback Yes, he stands at the top of the collegiate heap after leading his team to the NCAA championship with the defeat of longtime nemesis Alabama last week. But his on-the-field heroics fail to explain his determined rise to the top. Perhaps generously listed at 6’ he drew little pre-college interest from recruiters. He was under-sized and under-appreciated. Most projected him as a potential backup QB for a Power Five school. At age 3, he told his Dad he wanted to play QB for Georgia. As a freshman walk-on, he didn’t quit despite being buried down the depth chart at his dream school. He didn’t quit when he transferred to Jones County Community College. He didn’t quit when he bet on himself by transferring back to Georgia, hoping for playing time. He began this season as a backup QB, but early in the season, he got his chance to start and certainly made the most of it. Then on the biggest stage, it was he who out-shined Alabama’s Heismanwinning QB Bryce Young to claim college football’s biggest prize. The little guy had beaten the biggest odds. Asked his thoughts following the game, his response told everything about the character that enabled him to greatness. “Keep your mouth shut. Work hard. Life is tough. Work through it.” Now there is a role model even Charles Barkley can look up to.

is unable to play home games because of New York City’s vaccination mandate and was unwelcomed on the road, with the Nets saying they didn’t want a parttime player. However, things changed when the Nets found themselves short-handed due to the COVID outbreak. While 97% of the NBA players are fully vaccinated, Irving said, “I knew the consequences.” The Nets caved and now allow Irving to play road games only. But on the bright side, here are my nominations for a pair of nonprofessional athletes worthy of emulation. John Harrar, Penn State basketball Given an extra year of eligibility via the NCAA covid rules, the 6’9 senior decided to return to the Nittany Lions and has gained the respect of fans, teammates, and opponents alike. Far from flashy, Harrar has started all PSU’s games the past two seasons and was named as the recipient of the Big Ten’s Outstanding Sportsmanship Award last season. In a recent game against Indiana, Harrar sat out much of the second half with a leg injury but returned to lead a late comeback in the Lions’ 61-58 win. Following the game, he came back from the locker room to greet a host of young fans by posing for pictures and signing autographs. Stetson Bennett IV, University of Georgia

I would hand her my card, and she would entertain. We talked about everything. Pat was quite stubborn in terms of her politics, and we would occasionally banter. She was so grand, and I am a better person for knowing her. GO HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY AND MAKE THE MOST OF IT. A few years back. I asked to take her photo. WHY? I just wanted to say thanks. Pat was such a special friend. GOD BLESS YOU, MY FRIEND. Pat Koch may have lost her battle with cancer. But she is still with us. Pat often reminded me not to sweat the small stuff. I miss her dearly. Every time I drive up, I think of her. I order my caramel iced coffee and remember her smile. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Thanks, Pat. Cheers.

Pat Koch was the extra sweet gal who worked the busy drive-thru at Mcdonald’s in Old Lycoming Township. She not only took our money, Pat gave us all simple words of wisdom. She was the very best, and I have never met anyone who was so lovely. She reminded me of my grandmothers from Minnesota. YOU HAVE A BLESSED DAY. Pat and I were friends on Facebook.
