A Strategy To Empower People

A

s many of you know, when I was growing up in Southside, I lived on Kane Street. I spent a lot of time at my grandmother, Josephine Webb’s, and at my aunt Mary Jo’s. Both lived in what my Father referred to as the Dutch Hill section. I had a blast in that neighborhood, whether I was at my cousin Kevin’s, my grandmother’s, or at the Plankenhorn’s house, which was just above Uncle Jim’s and Aunt Mary Jo’s. They always treated me like their own, and I loved playing whiffle ball in the big open field next to their house. It was one of the first places I was allowed to ride my bike too, which was a big deal back then — down Kane Street, across Mountain Avenue, and down Beech. The other place I loved going was over to my grandparents, Nanny and Pappy Maietta. They lived right on 4th Street across from the Handy Market. My grandfather had the Newberry Plaza and on down Race Street still owned the warehouse and garage where he had Lycoming Sales and Leasing Company. My Uncle Ron and Aunt Anna lived right on the corner of the parking lot. Pappy parked some of his older trucks there, and we often played in an adjacent open field. My cousin Ronnie and I would throw stones, play kickball, smear the person with the ball, get inside the trucks and act like we

were driving with the neighborhood kids, which included the Kiesslings. Great childhood memories from Dutch Hill and Newberry. This week we wanted to feature STEP, Inc. and all the good they do in Lycoming and Clinton counties. I am amazed at the programs, help, and assistance they offer folks at the beginning of their lives, right on thru until many are homebound. Unfortunately, and fortunately, the only person an elderly or homebound individual may see is somebody from STEP. James D. Plankenhorn, President & CEO of STEP, will always just be Jimmy to me. I’ve known him my whole life, and I still think of him as my childhood friend that I’m gonna jump on my Huffy bike and go play whiffle ball with. And then maybe spend the night at my Nanny Webb’s or Aunt Mary Jo’s and do it all over the next day. We would play for hours. They don’t come any better than Jimmy; he is retired Air Force, loves his community, and is a great person to oversee things on a daily basis at STEP. And yes, he would often get the best of me at whiffle ball, he was a little bit older, or at least that’s my story. Then there is STEP’s Chief Financial Officer, Patricia J. Kiessling. She will always be Patti to me. She has been very successful in the finance world and worked her way to

being a CFO. We have pretty much known each other during our entire journey through life and spent many years working together first at McCormick Lines for my Father. Patti continued on with my Dad to Webb Communications, and long Jim story short, she is like an Webb, Jr. older sister to me. She has overseen Webb Weekly’s financials since the beginning. I’m proud to report she never beat me at whiffle ball. Thank you, Patti, for putting up with me because I’m sure I wasn’t an easy younger brother. STEP stands for Success Through Engagement and Partnership. I just recently found that out from my Editor, Steph. It is present with their logo often in small print, but many ask what it stands for, including me. Since Patti began working there eight years ago, Jimmy and I have gotten to talk on a more regular basis. This has allowed me to learn just how important STEP is within our community. See, previously, I knew of the organization, but never really took the time to learn about the organization. To me, STEP is simply people that love and care about the people within our communities. They help in the widest variety of ways. They employ close to 300 folks between their Lycoming and Clinton County offices. We all know about their Head Start program, the transportation they provide, and the Meals on Wheels

they deliver. However, that’s just the beginning of what they do. They truly provide education, services, and positivity for about every need a person or family could have. STEP’s Text Savvy Senior Sessions are an example of how the organization never stops with its educating mission. And this is so important to so many of our more seasoned citizens. Everything STEP does is in a manner to provide a positive community platform not only for services but for education. Hopefully, this edition provides awareness about STEP. There is way too much ground to cover in just one issue. I encourage you, whether it’s for yourself or a family member, if you need help or a helping hand in any manner, give them a call. STEP Williamsport — 1-800-346-3020 or 570326-0587. STEP Lock Haven — 1-800346-3020 or 570-858-5800. I want to give a shout-out to Rachelle Abbot, Chief Operations and Planning Officer, Jeannie Sullivan, Office of the Aging Director, and Lori Boos, who is the AmeriCorps Program Manager, for the outstanding jobs they do and being great to work with. Editor Steph also wanted me to give a shout-out to Jamey Williams, Executive Assistant, for making sure everything runs smoothly. I felt it was very important to identify a few of the local folks that are the faces behind STEP. I wish I could picture all within our pages. STEP is truly a team effort. God Bless America.

’all. Despite living the majority of my life in central PA, I am just not built for how cold it’s been recently. As I write this, it’s a whopping 7°. That, my friends, is bull…nevermind… So right now, my only option is to stay inside as much as a I can. Here in the office, I’m armed with my trusty heated blanket, in my car I have remote start and heated seats, and at home I have more blankets than one person really should own. But if we are stuck inside avoiding the cold, what are we going to do to keep ourselves entertained? If the global pandemic has taught us anything, it is how to be inventive. Many facets of daily life have changed as a result of the COVID, and quite a number of people have discovered new things about themselves in the process — including interesting ways they can keep busy. ccording to their website, the Lycoming-Clinton Counties Commission for Community Action (STEP), Inc. is a private, nonprofit Community Action Agency and was incorporated in 1966. STEP stands for Success Through Engagement and Partnership. STEP’s mission is to engage diverse individuals, families, and communities in the pursuit of social and economic success. STEP accomplishes its mission by serving customer needs through dozens of different programs categorized into five different pathways: Early Learning, Housing Options, Workforce Development, Community Collaboration, and Independent Living. As part of a community of agencies serving the region, STEP is the Community Action Agency, working to positively impact the whole person and family, helping them become or remain independent and mitigating the causes and conditions of poverty. Among the many programming needs in Lycoming County, housing is an especially critical area of need. Throughout the community, there are many resources to support housing stability for families, and STEP offers several housing programs, including the Emergency Rental Assistance Program for Lycoming County. This program is for residents of Lycoming County who need rent and utility assistance and meet certain qualifications. Specifically,

the Emergency Rental Assistance Program 1 can assist residents for up to 15-months if they have been affected by COVID-19. Additional funds through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program 2 extends the timeframe by three months, for a total of 18 months. Applications can be found at www. stepcorp.org/LycoRent. STEP also continues to offer the Supportive Housing Program, which supports families in crisis to get back on their feet and secure stable housing. STEP is a walk-in location for homeless individuals to register with 211. STEP also has limited funding through an Emergency Solutions Grant to help secure temporary housing, such as hotel rooms for homeless individuals. This month, STEP is rolling out a new mortgage assistance program for those affected by COVID-19 in the areas of Jersey Shore Borough, Montoursville Borough, and the rural areas of Lycoming County. Unfortunately, residents of the City of Williamsport, Loyalsock Township, and South Williamsport Borough are not eligible for the mortgage assistance program. This assistance is for three months of mortgage arrears if qualifications and income guidelines are met. One of STEP’s better-known program categories is transportation. STEP Transportation provides services to residents of Lycoming and Clinton counties. There are several funding streams with different eligibility criteria, including Persons with Disabilities (PwD), Medical Assistance Transportation Program (MATP), Area

In addition to providing the skills for school readiness, families are strengthened by being active partners in their children’s learning. Participants also receive dental and vision care through partnerships with local mobile providers. Eligibility is not just income-based but also takes into account factors such as disabilities, foster status, and homelessness. Clinton counties region. The Community Needs Assessment for both counties provides an abundance of information for partners, funders, and the general public, which can be found on STEP’s website. Since STEP cannot meet all of the needs identified in the community, it has partnered with many public, private, and nonprofit organizations in the region. Community-level work is an especially effective use of resources, as these initiatives benefit all residents and not just individuals directly involved. Recent community-level projects include: expanding transportation in Clinton County; the rehabilitation of existing buildings such as STEP’s Lincoln Street campus, the Round Hills Campus, the former K-Mart plaza in Lock Haven; the construction of two new Centers for Healthy Aging; the RiverWalk Center and the Loyalsock Center. The Housing Options pathway provides weatherization, owner-occupied housing rehabilitation, and utilities assistance. These programs help households reduce their energy burden and improve health and safety outcomes while increasing or stabilizing property values. Workforce Development, though the Work Ready program, partners with the County Assistance Office to provide individuals receiving Extended Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (also known as cash assistance) to overcome barriers to employment, obtain work experience, and aims to assist them through and beyond

STEP Service Navigation is an evolving mix of case management programs, some of which include financial assistance, that works with customers to tackle the multifaceted barriers that may be keeping them from stability or self-sufficiency. Additionally, STEP AmeriCorps provides high-quality volunteer service members to local nonprofit organizations to increase their capacity while giving those service members a chance to pay for past or future educational expenses. In addition to STEP Transportation, the Independent Living Pathway contains the STEP Office of Aging, which provides a wide range of social services to older adults in our community. STEP Office of Aging also operates eight Centers for Healthy Aging, providing vital social engagement and health/nutrition supports. It is important to note that while STEP provides many and varied programs, they also rely upon many partners to support or complement their mission. Other nonprofits and local and state government agencies serve alongside STEP either through their programming or their funding support. As a community of agencies here to serve, STEP and its partners collectively do their best to serve the needs of area residents, helping them and their families in their journey to social and economic success.

County Hall Corner: Attention Who is Knocking at My Door? By Larry Stout

T

he upcoming primary election on May 17th and the general election on November 8th promises to bring a host of visitors to come knocking on our doors. There will be those with petitions to get themselves on the ballot, those who are on the ballot and want your vote, and those plugging for these candidates. But given that in the past couple of years, we have seen everything possible go supercalifragilistically weird, it is not surprising that there is the occasional wolf in sheep clothing among our friendly neighborhood door knockers. Lycoming County’s Department of Voter Services has reported that there have been reports of at least one individual who came to a home and claimed to be an employee of the county’s Voter Services Department and was seeking to solicit personal information. Director Forrest Lehman attended the Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, January 11th, to emphasize publicly that his department does NOT go door to door. If anyone is soliciting in the name of the department, they should report this immediately (voterservices@lyco.org or 570-3272267).

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves F igu re 1 : W h en t h es e very s mall begin to “die” they b lood ves s els b ec ome d is eas ed cause you to have t h ey b egin t o s h rivel u p and t h e nerves b egin t o d egenerat e. balance problems,

For the first 17 callers we are offering a Nerve Pain Evaluation for only $47 Receive: • A Thermal Image Scan to see your nerve damage • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being, where we will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • Where indicated, a full set of specialized x-rays • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to minimize your neuropathy symptoms. Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with

However, these imposters should not deter residents from participating in the electoral process that comes to their doorsteps. The honest-to-goodness individuals who go door-to-door are very committed to their cause and deserve a few minutes of your time. These would be actual candidates and those who are canvassing for candidates who want to hear and be heard. It is an age-old tradition, and it should not be scorned because of the very few who seek to use underhanded tactics. Generally, candidates or their party supporters try to campaign at large gatherings such as the Lycoming County Fair, the Builders Show, and other events that draw a good crowd. This is the best way to meet the most people in the

shortest period of time. Yet, in my years of working with elected officials from the local to the national level, I have heard many, many times how valuable it is to get an ear-to-the-ground perspective of the constituents by going out into the community. Meeting regular people in their own neighborhoods is the best way to get the public pulse without filters. So, with a little caution and prudence, be willing to answer that doorbell. If a candidate or candidate’s rep shows up at your doorstep, they should immediately identify themselves and explain why they are there. Always be very suspicious when individuals introduce their organization or party and not themselves. Be especially suspicious if they open with a question. For example, “Hello, I am with the Star-Spangled Banner Party, and are you the head of the home?” This might seem quite innocent, but it is a psychological way of controlling a conversation. Once you answer their question, you are the listener and responder. Psychologically it becomes harder to cut them off with the more questions you answer. Be suspicious of those who use an old salesman trick known as the ‘survey’ approach. An innocent question is asked to establish rapport. Imagine a person who comes to the door and says they are taking a survey on Second Amendment rights. A gun owner would jump

at the opportunity to give that a hearty thumbs-up. By an amazing coincidence, the surveyor just happens to represent Senator Soandso, who is a big Second Amendment supporter. The opposite is also possible. For those who say they believe in gun-control laws, the surveyor has material that shows his candidate has similar concerns. This is a bait-andswitch tactic that salespeople use, but not by honest political campaigns. Properly, a candidate or candidate rep introduces themselves and explains why they are there. At this point, you have the right to say ‘sorry, not interested’ and bid them on their way. But if you are willing to sacrifice two or three minutes, it will be valuable for both you and the candidate or candidate’s representative. A standard question is to ask what are your greatest concerns. There are no bad answers, even if the issue has to do with a national issue like inflation or illegal immigration. The candidate or candidate rep may have no control in this area, but they can pass it on. If you are asked a specific question, be honest if you have no opinion or awareness of the issue. Your ignorance is also informative. Be aware of the rogues out there, but please, don’t chase these folks away without listening first. We still live in a democracy, and every voice is important and should be heard.

it: ‘the good of man is a working of the soul in the way of excellence in a complete life... for as it is not one swallow or one fine day that makes a spring, so it is not one day or a short time that makes a man blessed and happy”. Adam Sicinski, the founder of the leadership blog IQ Matrix, writes that to achieve your goals, you need to commit to the pursuit of excellence. He goes on to say that when a person excels at something, they perform at a level far above average. The problem, says Sicinski, is that measuring excellence is sometimes difficult because it is subjective. For example, one person’s definition of an outstanding job can be very different from another’s, though both could be correct in many instances. Sicinski believes that living a life in pursuit of excellence means to make a positive difference in the lives of others and that you should willingly share your expertise and enthusiasm. Also, that you should work to leave a legacy behind that will positively impact the world. According to Sicinski, some key actionable steps anyone can take toward pursuing excellence are: • Set clearly defined goals.

• Let go of the negative thoughts that are keeping you stuck and feeling miserable. • Follow through on the promises you make to yourself and others. • Avoid the pitfalls of procrastination, perfectionism, and instant gratification. • Maintain high levels of energy through proper diet, exercise, and adequate sleep. • Keep your motivation levels primed at all times to help you get through difficult periods of your life. • Plan ahead by anticipating potential setbacks and problems in advance. We all have choices as individuals. We can choose to focus on success and competition and pursue things that we think will make us happy such as material wealth and career accolades, or we can choose excellence. Pursuing excellence involves striving to be our best in everything we do regardless of what others are doing. Whether our job is pushing a mop, delivering mail, or performing surgery, we can choose to do our best. By choosing excellence, we are contributing to the greater good, and we are choosing to serve others instead of competing with them.

ife is beginning to return to normal for some residents of the 1800 block of Sweeley Avenue, while for others it may never be the same again. A full-scale insurance survey of the damage caused by the natural gas explosion that took two lives in the neighborhood is scheduled to begin Monday. Insurance agents and adjusters from around the state will set up headquarters Monday in a trailer that has served as Civil Defense disaster site headquarters since the morning after the blast. Civil Defense officials, who have maintained a security watch around the neighborhood, said that many families on the lower end of Sweeley Avenue have moved back into their homes.

The blasts, which occurred within an hour of each other, destroyed the homes of Anthony J. Kohler, of 1839 Sweeley Avenue, and Mrs. Elsie M. Coder, 1841 Sweeley Avenue. Mr. Kohler and J. Raymond Lundy, of 2090 Lycoming Creek Road were killed when the Kohler home exploded about an hour after the Coder home exploded. Mrs. Coder was rescued from her burning home uninjured. Twenty-three persons, including nineteen firemen fighting the Coder blaze, were injured when the Kohler home exploded. Preliminary damages estimated run as high as $1.5 million dollars, according to Civil Defense officials. Damages could go higher they said. As many as five homes in the neighborhood have already been declared beyond repair by the owners because of severe structure damage.

ow many people got the urge last week to deep clean your fridge or clean a closet or drawer because of my column? Did I help motivate you to get a few things done? This might surprise you, but I wasn’t always organized. Back in my younger days, I wasn’t the cleanest. My parents were always on me about my bedroom. I never could seem to stay organized. I heard “clean your room” a few times a week. Funny,

I have an eight-year-old daughter who is the same dang way!! No matter how hard I try, that child cannot stay organized! Her report card last marking period was wonderful! There was one R. I was like, what’s the R stand for!? It meant rarely shown. I slid my finger across the R to see what was rarely shown. It was organization. I literally started laughing out loud. I thought, “of course it is!” I messaged her wonderful teacher

Mrs. Thompson and was just curious what exactly it was that was unorganized. I figured her desk. Sure enough, that’s what it was. I told Kenz she better keep it clean and Andrea that I would have McElroy her teacher send me pictures of it randomly if I had to. (She’s done much better.) Then I have my son, who is the complete opposite. So organized, and

his room always stays so nice. I don’t get it!? Well, I guess I do. My momma said she is just like me at that age. I think back and go, “yup, that’s exactly what’s going on here.” My mom and dad were worried I wouldn’t keep a nice house when I couldn’t even keep my bedroom clean. The year I got engaged and was ready to be married, my dad and brother helped me move my bedroom down to our new home that sat right below my parents. We had bought our neighbor’s house, Dorthy Bubb, who had passed away the year before. She

left a sweet little 1948 home that sat up in the woods and had beautiful property. It needed to be updated, but after seeing the potential of this sweet home, we bought it. It was nice being right down the road from my parents. My dad put everything in his truck and drove down the dirt road to our new place. I don’t even think I was home that day to help. I don’t know if he was on a mission to get me the heck out at eighteen years old or if he wanted to get it done and over with knowing his little girl was leaving the

nest in a few days. When I came home that night, he said to me, “Andrea Sue! Do you know what we found under your bed!?” “Um, candy?” I asked. I was known to hide candy and snacks in my room for some odd reason. “No, it wasn’t candy. It was a hoagie!” he explained. “What!? A hoagie!?” I asked. “Yes, Andrea. A hoagie. I know you keep snacks in your room, but a hoagie is just not right.” “Dad, I swear to God it’s not mine!

Why would I keep a hoagie that needs refrigeration under my bed!?” I mean, I was young, and my brain still was obviously not fully developed at that point (haha!), but I knew that darn hoagie was not mine. I knew exactly where it came from. A girlfriend and I went out to dinner, and she came back to the house with me. She brought it up to my room, so she had it when she went home. She must have laid it on my bed, and it fell between the wall and the bed, never to be seen again! Guys, I still get grief about that hoagie to this day. Dad brings it up, I’d say occasionally. I still have to defend

myself that it wasn’t mine, and they still don’t believe me. How rude. Both of my parents now tell me what a wonderful housekeeper I am. My mom always says, “I never dreamed you would keep a house like you do; I am so proud of how clean your home always is.” So, what I am hearing when she tells me this, is that there is hope for my daughter Kenzy. Praise Jesus because that girl is driving me to drink with how sloppy this child can be. Ha!! (I really don’t drink, just a figure of speech.) It’s not hard to stay organized. you stay that way. For instance, in our freezer, I went to the Dollar General and bought two plastic bins that fit perfectly on our freezer shelf. I put labels on them that say, “healthy lunch,” and the other says “breakfast items.” In the bathroom closet, I keep six plastic Sterilite containers that lock and are the size of a shoebox. They fit perfectly into our closet. I have labels that are first aid, medicines, Andrea’s breathing medicines, sun care, extra toothbrushes & toothpaste, and last but not least, my personal favorite, poison ivy sh--. I get poison so easily and so bad that it makes me mad. That label felt necessary, and people that see it crack up laughing. I call it my conversation piece. Our deep freezer has six bigger Sterlite containers that lock for different meats. It’s so nice to go down and pull a tote out, and you know what will be in it instead of digging through a huge deep freezer that gets everything lost so quickly. Plastic containers are your friend here. Use them! You won’t be sorry. Before you know, you’ll be buying a label maker like me. *wink wink*

The higher the boot, the more likely a tucked pant looks best. For ankle or booties, you may end up going with more of a scrunched vs. tucked pant hem. You’ll have to play around and see which looks and feels best. Lastly, no matter in what style or color of winter boots you’ll be trudging through the elements, you can’t go wrong pairing them with a bright sweater, fleece-lined leggings, and a warm coat. 97 ACRE LYCOMING CO. FARM

5th Generation Farm –Been in family almost 150 years (White Deer Valley)

SELLS at ABSOLUTE AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER

In celebration of National Kiss a Ginger Day, meet Judd. The handsome ginger is three years old. Caretakers say he is a bit of a foodie. His favorite treat? Hot dogs. His favorite activity? Playing and chasing cats, er, should we say, he prefers socializing with larger animals. With his baby doll eyes and sweet manners, Judd is sure to give your home sweet ginger spiciness.

We cannot pass up the opportunity to highlight Ginger for National Kiss a Ginger Day. Ginger is a sweet little kitten, at just seven months old. He was found outside as a ten-week-old kitten this past summer. He and his sibling were severely congested and needed medical treatment. He has been growing and thriving in a foster home since. Now he is ready for smooches and cuddles in a home of his very own.

ompetitive swimming is starting to loom larger in the world of competitive sports. An opportunity for youth from ages six to 18 to participate in this area has been enhanced with the advent of the Williamsport Area Swim Club (WASC), founded in 2006. According to the club’s website, “The mission of The Williamsport Area Swim Club is a comprehensive swim program committed to the development of competitive swimming and character in and out of the water. WASC strives to achieve the highest potential for all its swimmers.” Vision Their vision is to promote a new level of coaching and swimming to the greater Williamsport area by

My younger son is really enjoying his experience being involved at the younger level.” The club competes in swim meets throughout a wide region. The next swim meet for Bronze/Silver/Gold level swimmers is located in Mechanicsburg, February 18-20. The last meet was January 7-9 in Carlisle, in which quite a few of the swimmers who attended broke personal records for times in events including Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly as well as the combination event such the Individual Medleys. The club also has fundraisers, including the Firecracker 5K on the 4th of July and the lumberjack triathlon on August 7, 2022. The WASC accepts members throughout the year at all levels. Master the art of making overnight oats, which don’t require any cooking. Simply layer oats, Greek yogurt, applesauce (or other fruit purees), cinnamon, and almond milk in a mason jar. Place it in the refrigerator overnight. The oats will get tender without cooking and the meal will be ready in the morning. Build a smoothie. Do prep work for healthy vegetab le- and fruit-rich smoothies by chopping and preparing all ingredients the night before. Simply blend with protein powder or oats in the morning with ice. Consider breakfast burritos. Prescramble eggs with diced peppers and onions and store in containers in the refrigerator. In the morning, place the mixture onto a tortilla, top with cheese and heat in a skillet or in the microwave. Even individuals whose mornings are especially hectic can find ways to enjoy a healthy breakfast every day.

reakfast long has been touted as the most important meal of the day. After a good night’s rest, breakfast refuels the body and energizes it for the day ahead. Hectic mornings compel many people to skip breakfast. That’s especially so for parents who are pulled in multiple directions each morning. There are many ways to streamline breakfast and still get to school or work on time. The following are some tips to save time and enjoy healthy homemade breakfasts each morning. Put your slow cooker to work. Slow cookers are not just for dinner. Use them to cook a variety of breakfast foods, including oatmeal, eggs or grits. Simply mix up your ingredients, set on low and let the breakfast cook itself overnight. Mix up your macros. Macronutrient is the scientific term for proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Nutritionists suggest mixing macronutrients in meals to get the most benefits from well-rounded meals. Aim for 20 grams of protein, 15 to 20 grams of fat and about 50 grams of carbs, with at least five grams of fiber. Develop a custom granola. Oats, nuts, dried fruits ... mix it all up to make a signature granola blend. It’s easy to eat dry or with milk and make a quick, healthy breakfast. Embrace the no-cook oatmeal method.

UPMC Nurse: Exposure Can Be a Problem in Winter

LLC

old weather comes with winters in Pennsylvania, and with the freezing temperatures, wind chill, ice, and snow also comes an added risk for potential exposure injuries. While some love the winter wonderland, others may want to hunker down in their homes and wait it out until spring. Consider the following tips to help keep safe and warm when the temperatures plummet. Listen to Your Body When the temperatures drop, it’s important that you listen to your body when exposed to the cold. Our bodies are designed to regulate our temperature, and when it gets too hot or too cold, the brain sends signals to the body to get it back to a healthy temperature. The most common signals from our brains are shivering, goosebumps, the urge to curl up or hug our body, and change or loss of color of the skin (pale, red, or blue). If your body is trying to tell you something, don’t ignore it. Cooling of body parts may result in various cold injuries - with hypothermia being the most serious. Nonfreez-

ing cold injuries include chilblains (skin sores) and immersion foot or trench foot. Freezing injuries include frostnip, frostbite, and hypothermia. Toes, fingers, ears, and nose are at greatest risk because these areas do not have major muscles to produce heat. In addition, the body preserves heat to keep our core and internal organs warm by reducing the flow of blood to the extremities under cold conditions. In addition, hands and feet tend to get cold more quickly than the body (torso) because they lose heat more rapidly since they have a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, and they are more likely to be in contact with colder surfaces and moisture than other parts of the body. Dress in Layers Dress in layers and cover your head. When heading outdoors in the cold, it is important to be prepared for changing conditions. Being out in the elements unexpectedly or underdressed and underprepared can put you at a greater risk for developing hypothermia or other freezing injuries. It’s important to consider that even when undercover or inside a car, hypothermia can still develop. When outside in the elements, hypothermia and frostbite can be avoided by wearing loose-fitting, lightweight layers

hypothermia can rapidly occur in some conditions. Have an Emergency Kit It is also important to make sure you have an emergency kit prepared and ready in your vehicle or carry extra kit items with you in a backpack if possible. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recommends that the vehicle kit contain the following items: a flashlight and batteries, a battery-operated radio, jumper cables, an extra cellphone and charger, a snow shovel, matches and candles, first aid supplies, extra warm clothing, and gloves, a blanket, ice scraper, bottled water, non-perishable food, and anything else you may need to accommodate family traveling with you (special medication, baby supplies, and pet food). If you are not using a car or vehicle when outdoors, consider taking along first aid supplies, extra warm clothing and gloves, a small blanket, bottled water, non-perishable food, and additional special medication and baby supplies just in case you become stranded. This time of year has its challenges, but it also can be very enjoyable. Preparation is essential to ensuring you can safely make the most of the winter season. Taking a little extra time to plan ahead can save you a trip to the emergency room. of clothing, a hat, gloves, insulated socks, and water-repellant shoes. Layering makes adapting to changing conditions and activity levels easier. Proper layering allows you to remove or add insulation so that you never get too cold or too hot, preventing excessive sweating, which can cause additional heat loss, especially when you slow down, expose your skin, or stop to rest. Base layers should be lightweight, form-fitting, and composed of materials that will wick moisture from the skin (polyester, merino wool, silk). External layers should have insulating properties (down, wool, and fleece) and provide protection from the elements (waterproofing, wind-breaking). Mind the Temperature and Wind Chill Wind chill is how cold it feels on your skin when the wind is factored into the temperature and forecast. Meteorologists refer to this as the “feels-like” temperature. A surface loses heat three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. Wind chill affects the body through convection or the movement of air around the body. The wind strips away the thin layer of warm air above your skin. The stronger the wind, the more heat lost from your body, and the colder it will feel. When the winds are light, it will feel closer to the actual air temperature. The “feels-like” conditions are what you should prepare for when heading outdoors, taking weather alerts (frost advisories, wind chill advisories) and their warnings seriously as frostbite and

Elijah’s Prayer Battle

T

he story of Elijah’s epic prayer battle against the prophets of Baal and Asherah on Mount Carmel is a must-read for every believer. If you’re not familiar with the story, take a moment to read it. It’s a good one. It is found in I Kings 18:1639. Making sense of this prayer battle requires some backstory. Israel had rejected God as their King. Unlike other countries, Israel was led by prophets, priests, and judges. They

didn’t have a human king because God was their King. That wasn’t good enough for them, so they asked Samuel the High Priest to give them a human king to lead them into battle. Samuel warned the people of the consequences of rejecting God’s sovereignty. They did so anyway. You can read that part of the story in I Samuel 8. The result was a long line of wayward and abusive kings who chased after idols and pagan rituals and led Israel astray. Elijah’s prayer battle takes place un-

der the reign of rotten King Ahab. Ahab did more evil in the eyes of the Lord and angered the Lord more than any of the kings who came before him. He married the wayward JezebTim el and began servHartzell ing and worshiping the idol Baal and promoting pagan rituals. Jezebel hunted down and executed the prophets of God. It was an awful season for Israel. Elijah prophesied to King Ahab that a drought without any dew or rain would take place for several years— and it would only rain at Elijah’s word. God then instructs Elijah to hide. The drought causes a severe famine. Three years later, Elijah emerges from hiding in the midst of the drought and the famine. This backstory sets the stage for the battle on Mount Carmel, which you’ve taken the time to read — right? There are several prayer lessons to be gleaned from Elijah’s prayer battle: God is the Eternal King. We live under the authority of earthly rulers, and we are directed in the Scriptures to obey them, but we do not worship them, fear

them, or look to them for meaning, security or hope. See Romans 13. Christians have only one King — the King of kings and Lord of lords. My friends, the battles we encounter in prayer will always be won, regardless of the outcome, as we place our faith fully in God, the one true, sovereign, and eternal King. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego declared this truth as they faced execution in the fiery furnace. Daniel 3:16-18, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” When God is truly your King, and you trust fully in His sovereignty, worldly outcomes no longer define success. All that matters is faithful, trust and obedience. When you go to battle in prayer, take heart, by faith, you already have the victory! Make up your mind. Elijah asked, “How long will you waver between two opinions?” Jesus declared, “No one can serve two masters.” See Matthew 6:24. A lack

that the impossible is the very reason we pray. To drive the point of impossibility home, Elijah had the sacrifice and altar drenched with water. He made sure no one could accuse him of trickery or sleight-of-hand. The miracle could only be attributable to God — and the response of the people reveals they got the point, “The Lord — He is God! The Lord — He is God!” Nothing is impossible with God. Nothing. So, pray like it! And as you pray for the impossible, remember that God’s will trumps our will. If the answer you receive is no, then restfully in the sovereignty of the King Who loves you beyond anything you

can imagine. Get up from your prayer and live in faith. Let nothing hold you back from your desire to bring glory to God — even in struggle and weakness. The battle in prayer is fought and won, first and foremost, in our hearts. God’s heart is moved by humility, sincerity, and obedience. God will not be manipulated. Theatrical displays (like dancing and shrieking and cutting with swords and spears) and babbling wordiness reveal a lack of understanding of what moves the heart of God. Instead, Jesus taught us to pray humbly, sincerely, and obediently because God already knows what we need. See

Matthew 6 (The Lord’s Prayer) and 26 (Jesus’ prayer in the garden). Did you hear that? God already knows what we need! All we need to do is bring it to Him in prayer. That’s why Jesus taught us to pray like this: “Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.”

of decisiveness results in a directionless and lukewarm life. See Revelation 3:16. Is God your eternal and sovereign King, or isn’t He? Do you keep waffling between allegiance to God and something else? Are you delaying a firm decision so you can keep your options open? If so, then you’re trying to live life with your feet on two sides of a fence. It doesn’t work — and you know it. It is time to declare with Joshua, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15. Miracles begin with impossibilities. ad things happen to good people. This is something you know, but why you? When the worst can happen, why does it? Were you were born under unlucky stars or with terrible karma? Maybe you’re just some poor, forgotten schlub in the universal scheme of things. Or maybe, as in the new book “A Reason for Hope” by Kristin von Kreisler, there’s something better in store for you. It had been far too long. That’s what Tessa Jordan’s best friend, Emma, said about Tessa’s love life. It had been years since Tessa’d broken up with her last boyfriend and she wasn’t meeting men at her bookmobile job, so

Emma pushed her to do something. That was when Tessa went on the local dating site near her San Juan Island, Washington, home. That was when Tessa met Nick Payne. She’d seen his face before. Everybody had; Nick was running for City Council and his campaign signs were everywhere. That he would reach out to her on the dating site was flattering, and their first date was fun. The second was a nightmare. Nick had invited Tessa to his house for a cook-out with his brother but when she got there, the brother had “canceled.” She stayed, but halfway through her second glass of wine, Tessa began to feel weird. The next thing she knew, it was morning, she was woozy and naked, and Nick was leering at her from the other side of the bed. She didn’t ask for this. Did he rape her? Tessa wasn’t sure but two days later, after Emma talked her into

details into her story, and they may send you reeling. Don’t take this lightly. The other thing to know is that this book is gently respectful about all the above. It’s real, but not bluntly so. It’s soft, but only so you land unhurt at the end. It’s very predictable – you’ll probably have that ending figured out by page 26 – but the predictability feels comfortable. Even the dog seems quite cliched, but readers won’t likely want it any other way. Despite its uniformity with other books in this genre, “A Reason for Hope” is tightly-crafted, not sloppy, and not too unnecessarily contrived. It’s enjoyable but again, beware. With caveats in place, “A Reason for Hope” ain’t too bad.

going to the police, they confirmed it. Every day he went into his office, prosecutor Will Armstrong was glad for Hope. The yellow Lab was trained to comfort victims who needed it in the courtroom; that she was his companion at home was icing on the cake. Hope lived up to her name when she was at “work,” especially when “work” was helping Will to get justice for women who deserved it... There are two things you should know about “A Reason for Hope,” and the first one is very important, so heed this now: if you’re a victim of assault or date rape, tread carefully around this book. his is the final installment in a series regarding habitat improvement. We have covered developing a plan, eliminating undesirable plants, and what trees we should consider planting for various wildlife species. Now, let’s look at a few final steps — creating food plots, bringing back fallow fields, and some shrubs, bushes, and vines we could add along the way. FOOD PLOTS: The most critical first step in the creation of any food plot is to accomplish proper soil sample testing and then to follow the suggestions on the analysis as to what lime and fertilizer to add, based on what plants you will grow there. When deciding the location, consider proximity to water, bedding area, other food sources, property lines, and existing travel corridors. The preferred size of a food plot is smaller rather than larger. Depending on the topography and size of your property, you are much

better off developing multiple smaller plots rather than one large plot. Observations over the years have shown that in a large plot, deer will first work the outer edges of the planted area and sometimes never make it to the center of a large food plot. Deer and turkeys feel more secure staying near a forest edge into which they can escape if threatened by a predator. Numerous smaller food plots will create more edges than just one oversized plot. The ideal shape of a food plot is not one big square or circle, but instead should be a planting area in an S shape or in an elongated shape that, again, yields more edges. The exact layout may be dictated by terrain or existing trees you want to maintain on the forest edge. WHAT TO PLANT: Remembering that providing a variety of food is important, a mix of seeds is desirable. Your forester or wildlife management consultant should be able to point you in the right direction. If you don’t have one, check with local nurseries, landscape businesses, or feed

“My hearing aids are over five years old, and have served me well over the years. It’s time for a new hearing aids and to my surprise my insurance covered my hearing aids in full! I received hearing aids that retail for $6000 paid in full by my insurance company. The first thing that happens when you walk in the door at Artisan Hearing Technologies, is that they check your insurance for you to see if you have a hearing aid benefit. I have always loved the service, professionalism, and staff at Artisan, however I am so excited with my new insurance! I do not have to pay one penny for my new hearing aids. From my experience it is very important that you have a hearing evaluation, and your hearing aid customized to your hearing loss by a professional. I am getting all of this for free with my insurance. Before you ever consider buying something over-the-counter, I suggest you at least have your insurance checked. And based on my experience in the past, I was very surprised at how many insurance companies are now covering hearing aids through the Medicare supplemental plans, when they did not 5 years ago. I was also very happy that Artisan Hearing is a provider for most of the insurance companies that are providing these benefits.” ~ Gerry Green

5 acres of soybeans may be overrun by deer and may never fully mature. If possible, leave some of the fallow field out of production, but eliminate any invasive plants that are there. This will allow an area for fawning in the springtime and an additional source of cover and food throughout the year. SHRUBS & VINES: Wherever possible, keep any existing native shrubs and vines, such as witch hazel, raspberries, blackberries, and wild fox grapes. American bittersweet is an old-time vine that should be encouraged whenever possible. Try to incorporate any of these plants in food plots you are developing and add them to any future sites that you develop. The edges where the forests meet the fields are ideal spots to plant new shrubs and vines for wildlife. Elderberries, American cranberry, silky dogwood, and red osier dogwood, along with wild fox grape and American bittersweet vines, will all do well along these edges. Once established, they will all benefit from a feeding or two annually of 10-10-10 fertilizer. Any of these shrubs or vines will add to the variety of the inventory of feed available to attract and hold wildlife of all kinds.

While clover is one of the favorites to plant, it should be accompanied by either wheat or oats as a cover crop or nurse crop, which provides shade for the clover as it is in its early stages of growth. Birdsfoot trefoil is a low-growing plant that yields a yellow flower and is preferred by grouse and turkey poults. The trefoil seed can be spread at the same time you are planting clover. Buckwheat is a very effective plant to attract deer and can be added to the mix of seeds in the spring. FALLOW FIELDS: Fields that have been left alone for years and have been taken over by weeds, tree seedlings, and invasive plants provide an excellent site to plant larger areas of agricultural plants for wildlife. As with food plots, the critical first step is to do proper soil tests. Depending on what is already planted annually on neighboring properties, consider converting some of the fallow fields into the production of clover, field corn, or sunflowers if you have several acres to work with. If you have at least 5 acres or more to develop, then soybeans may be your best choice. Fields of less than

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

The “Reds and Grays” of Winter

W

here did that title come from; the grays of winter are obvious, but where did the red come from? What I am actually referring to are red and gray foxes, and they are both very active throughout the winter. There is no shortage of foxes in this state, but the fact is few people ever really spot one unless it’s splattered on the road somewhere. One of the main reasons you seldom see one is both reds and grays are mainly nocturnal — they do most of their hunting at night. Like many other folks, I put my share of time in the woods this fall hunting deer, and I never spotted a fox; sure, in years past, I would occasionally get a glimpse of one while perched in my tree

stand, but that was a rare sighting. Recently my wife and I placed a couple of trail cameras out in the back of the house pointing to the nearby thick woods; one set to take photos and the other set to take Ken Hunter short videos. After a week, we pulled the cards and watched the video, and to our surprise, a nice red fox appeared to come from the thickly wooded area and towards our house; later, we watched it return back to the woods. A day later, the fox again showed up on video out back. Had it not been for the trail cams, we would not have been aware of the apparent frequent visitor. Red and gray foxes actually belong to the same family as dogs, coyotes, and wolves. Both species have very sharp senses of sight, smell, and hearing. A fox can actually hear a mouse squeal at

may be a bit better in the winter months since they show up a lot better against the white snow. Also, foxes seldom seek shelter in holes or dens during the winter months but would rather curl up and sleep in the open with their bushy tail covering their faces to stay warm. Females are denned up in early summer, and the young begin leaving their dens by July or August. I once spotted a female and her youngsters hanging out around their den,

an old groundhog hole that was located along a major highway. The den was high up on the open bank next to the woods, and I kept an eye out for them when I passed by. Since they are seldom seen, people often think they are rare or very low in numbers. While populations may fluctuate due to a number of factors like food availability and various pressures from man, such as logging activities, it appears that

Pennsylvania’s fox population is fairly stable. I looked at some past studies, and several years ago, it was estimated that the statewide average was approximately 1.4 foxes per square mile of suitable habitat; that to me seems like a lot of foxes. Since there is apparently no shortage of foxes and we seldom get to see one, maybe the trick is to put that trail cam out in the back yard — who knows what might show up.

Foxes eat whatever they can easily obtain, and that can include mice, rats, rabbits, woodchucks, opossums, squirrels, porcupines, and any other small creature that roams the woods and fields. That diet also includes birds and their eggs as well as insects and some fruits. By the way, cats roaming about are also high on their menu. Your chances of spotting a fox

States. Over the years, LLB has made changes to its original provisions that restricted leagues to a 15,000-population base. During the same time, leagues with multiple Little League programs have merged due to population changes or competitive desires. Such was the case with the 2021 LLB World Series champion Taylor, Michigan. A city of 63,409, Taylor once boasted three chartered Little Leagues. In 2019, those leagues merged to form the Taylor North Little League that now reigns as World Champions. As you would expect, Little League International reacted to Newberry’s

restrictions, meaning they can draw players from anywhere they’d like. Shifting populations, boundary restrictions, participation rules, and the tremendous interest in Travel League baseball and softball have all become obstacles facing LLB in recent years. I can recall a conversation in the stands at Lamade Stadium several years ago as broadcast colleague Mike Fogarty and I met with a representative of an Illinois league participating in the World Series. We asked him if he was scouting one of the teams playing as they would be his team’s next opponent. “Yes,” was his response, “but we already know a lot about them as we have already played them twice this year.” Mike and I were stunned by his comment and to learn that these same two leagues had met in Travel Ball tournaments in Cooperstown, New York, and the Midwest previously that summer. Since that time, many of the teams arriving for the annual World Series have had extensive Travel Ball experience before arriving here. Little League Baseball remains the biggest and, in my opinion, the best youth sports program out there, but they do have their warts. International membership among its ranks has grown, but it’s been accompanied, some of it driven by COVID-related complications, by chartered league losses in the United

used to be.” What once was common and accepted have changed. F.W. Woolworth Company, Blockbuster Video, Borders Bookstores, and Aunt Jemima pancake mix are among so many great product providers that have passed from the scene. Newberry Little League, the land of Fred Heaps and championships, enjoyed tremendous on-field success. The league won 17 District 12 championships, appeared in the National 1947 Little League Tournament and in the 1969 Little League World Series. They are the last Lycoming County team to get to the LLB World Series. Their softball program chipped in with10 local district titles. For local leagues, drawing Heaps’ team in the district tournament was an elimination ticket. As a Little League manager, I was 0-2 against his squads, including one memorable game played at the old Memorial Little League field when our Little Mountaineer team fell victim to a come-from-behind home run hit by Kevin Stahl on an ill-advised curveball pitch selection. In taking their ball and going home, Newberry is apparently signaling its growing dissatisfaction with LLB rules. Although the league has made no public comment on its decision, by joining the Ripken program, they are not encumbered with any league boundary

would like to say a big thanks. The feedback on last week’s write-up “Drive Thru Pat” was off the charts. I received all kinds of love, from far and close. Pat Koch was a special person, and she impacted all walks of life. I am also very humbled by those who said congrats. I tallied my 100th career high school hoops coaching victory with a win over Millville Friday. I am glad that someone is keeping track. Now I won’t share the amount of losses, but it sure was fun looking back. I heard from several of my former players and old friends in the biz. Tons of great memories, folks. It was never about getting to 100, as I am more proud of the many relationships I have developed in my 9 1/2 years on the bench.

I am very blessed. Thanks to all. Life is good. Right? Well. To be determined. I was feeling under the weather on Sunday evening. Nothing major. Perhaps a cold. Went to bed early. Woke up the next morning with some aches and pains. A fever and a massive headache. Great. I did my best to get around. I was spent. Coach Spencer was headed to the basement. Lockdown. I reached out to my doctor to get tested. Couldn’t get in until Wednesday. Life was in a circle. I made several calls and wrote many emails. I was trying to stay optimistic, but obviously, something was wrong. I removed myself entirely — no interaction with anyone. No work. No practice. I was done. I stayed in complete isolation. It was hard, and I missed my

family. I am both vaccinated and boosted. Wear a mask when needed, and I stay away from people. That is what makes it so Jamie frustrating. Yes. Spencer The bug has been going around. COVID is everywhere. It affects everyone differently. I had my doubts, but it sure kicked the crap out of me. It wasn’t just the flu. I was so scared as I pulled in on Wednesday morning. I had to stay in my car on River Ave. Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten there so early. My mind was racing. I was thinking about everything. I wasn’t concerned for me but for the others around me. I was swabbed, and I have never been so nervous. I received a call fifteen minutes later. The nurse said I tested

positive. Great. I reached out to my superiors immediately. I told them that I was going to stay in hiding. I felt bad for leaving my coworkers hanging. We are stretched pretty thin already. My hoops team was scheduled to play that evening. Forget about it. Coach Spencer needs to remain in the basement. Thankfully Bill & Chris Reed are there to lend a hand. My friends will do a great job leading the Knights until I am on the mend. My boys played great at CMVT. It was so nice to hear from them. So, I am eventually getting better, and I hope to be back to normal. It has been a very long and stressful week. I never thought I would be sidelined. COVID is real, folks. I now know it all firsthand. It has impacted our lives in many different ways. Continue to stay safe. Wear those masks. Cheers.
