W

ell folks, great news, we have reached the middle of February. We all get to enjoy more than 45 minutes of daylight than just a short time ago at the beginning of January. Punxsutawney Phil has put in his one day’s work and returned to his posh pad for another year. I would expect nothing else but six more weeks of Winter in the wonderful area we call home. That’s just common sense, and as long as it’s only six more weeks, I’m overjoyed. Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report for Spring training in the upcoming week. And if that’s not a true harbinger of Spring, I don’t know what is. This coupled with the fact that February is the shortest month of the year, and when the calendar flips to March, that’s my unofficial beginning of the season that the robins represent. Speaking of those robins, I’ve been seeing them for weeks, which always brings a smile to my face. It also makes me wonder if the leader of the flock, you know, the captain of their flight plan who didn’t pick a far enough Southern destination to avoid the snow and cold weather, faces scrutiny from the other birds? They all probably believe they were heading for Miami and ended up in Montoursville; I can’t imagine this sits very well with the flock.

The big news this week is that Super Bowl Sunday also falls on a long Valentine’s Day weekend, which is officially celebrated on Monday as the calendar reads. I will warn all the men reading my column, a Super Bowl party complete with all the trimmings — you know, wings, pizza, buffalo chicken dip, and your favorite adult beverage, does not constitute taking the wife out for Valentine’s Day. Nor does hosting the party at your home fall under the category of romantic couples’ dinner. Please be careful, gentlemen, or you might become the first sack victim of this Super Bowl/Valentine’s Day weekend. If your significant other is good with the combination of these two events, immediately give them one of those big Tom Brady hugs I’ve witnessed over the years. You know Tom hugs everyone after winning the Lombardi Trophy. As a matter of fact, tell them you’re giving them a Tom Brady hug; that might even score you some extra points. Speaking of Tom Brady, his retirement was the big news across the NFL world this past week. Maybe I should just say the world in general. Believe me, every team and fanbase other than the one TB 12 is throwing touchdowns for is celebrating. The 6th round pick out of the University

of Michigan is simply the best that ever was. There is only one number you need to know to prove this — 7. Quarterback Tom Brady had led his team to seven Vince Lombardi Trophies. That is more Super Bowl championships than any Jim Webb, Jr. individual franchise has won. TB 12’s six with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tops the Pittsburgh Steelers and Patriots total of six. And that is why Tom Brady is, and will always be, the G.O.A.T — Greatest Of All Time — until somebody matches that most important number in professional football. Then let the conversation begin. I am a lifetime Pittsburgh Steeler fan, and it was great to see the sendoff the Steeler Nation gave Ben Roethlisberger. I appreciate everything Big Ben did for the Steelers and the City of Pittsburgh. The Black and Gold’s lucky number 7 led the team to two Super Bowl titles. However, the same reason, TB 12 is the overall GOAT of the NFL, The Original TB 12 — Terry Bradshaw — is the greatest Pittsburgh Steeler QB. Bradshaw led the Steelers to four Super Bowl championships without a defeat. This in an era when defenses could knock the living stuffing out of the quarterback. The Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, and Houston Oilers’ game plan wasn’t to sack Bradshaw — it

was to hurt Bradshaw and knock him out. This often occurred even before the AFC playoffs began. Then come Super Bowl time, you had the Minnesota Viking “Purple People Eaters,” the Dallas Cowboys “Doomsday Defense,” and the Rams “Fearsome Foursome” all taking shots at Bradshaw, which was just part of the game at the time. He just kept getting back up, although sometimes he ran to the wrong sideline. If you hit a quarterback in today’s NFL like that, they would take you off the field in handcuffs. Speaking of the Bengals and Rams, what a great matchup in Super Bowl LVI. The young gunslinger for the Bengals, Joe Burrow, seems destined to be the next great quarterback. He also seems to have that magic dust throughout his young QB life, as in his teams always win. On the other side of the field, the LA Rams quarterback, Matt Stafford, has been around a long time, his talent seemingly wasted in Detroit. Burrow recently won a National Championship at LSU; Stafford had his Georgia Bulldogs on the brink many moons ago but couldn’t get it done. What is my Super Bowl prediction? You will have to flip over to Editor Steph’s annual prognostications; she’s got it all covered from many sources. Thank you to everyone for sharing their football thoughts. Enjoy the Super Bowl, don’t forget about Valentine’s Day, and as always, God Bless America.

Residents of South Williamsport and the Local Community, I have made great strides in improving the current location of @YourConvenience Store and am looking for South Williamsport Borough approval to continue with my vision of what a modern day convenience store should look like. t’s that time of the year once again! Continuing the tradition started by Mike Rafferty, it’s time for our yearly Super Bowl Predictions. So. Are you ready for some football? This year’s big game brings us the Cincinnati Bengals taking on the LA Rams from Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. This is the second year in a row — and in Super Bowl history — that one team has homefield advantage. We don’t have any hometown skin in the game, but that’s not keeping people from sharing their opinions on how things are going to shake out on Sunday. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so let’s goooooooo! Starting around the office: Jaimie went home to get some advice, and her son Alex made the call for her: 28-21, Rams. Honestly, we

knows what he’s talking about. Jon Pries think that it’s going to be a good game — and a close one. “I’ll say Cincinnati Bengals win it by 3 points in a nail-biter!” Pastor Tim is a little disappointed with the lineup for the game but had this to say, “A Super Bowl between Big Ben and Tom Brady would have been an epic retirement blowout — and a game I would have loved to watch. Frankly, the Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes show was probably the best game of the year — and one of them should have been in the Super Bowl. I can’t see a Super Bowl between the Rams and Bengals topping the Bills’ and Chiefs’ playoff game. It was one of the best games ever. Anyway, I’ll stick with the AFC — Bengals 21, Rams 17.” Ironically enough, sportswriter Scott Lowery doesn’t think his opinion counts for much but noted, “Compelling QB storylines. Matthew Stafford leaves the downtrodden Lions for the glitz of LA.

Ohio-born Joe Burrow leaves Ohio State to win a Heisman Trophy and NCAA championship at LSU. Stafford gets traded to a Rams team expected to win. Burrow gets drafted to a Bengals team just hoping to survive. The Las Vegas bookies favor the Rams, playing in their home stadium, and they are correct more than 60% of the time. My rooting interest goes with the Bengals to become the third underdog in the last six years to win the Super Bowl. Burrow the better Hollywood movie story. Somehow the Bengals pull off another unexpected win, 27-24.” The newest addition to the Webb writing team, Joseph Smith, thinks these epic OTs are going to continue, but he sees the Bengals coming out on top once again, 24-21. Larry Stout struggled with his choice but finally concluded, “I struggle between my heart and my head with these Super Bowl predictions every year. My heart goes out to the underdog, and that is certain-

Can’t say I blame her. We can’t talk football without getting the thoughts from some of our local sports leaders, right? Let’s start with the heavy hitter, Hall-of-Famer Mike Mussina, “I’ll go with LA, 34-24. The Rams pass rush is tough, and too much Stafford to Cupp. Been their game plan all season.” Ron ‘CI’ Insinger starts us off, “Bengals 27, Rams 25. Being a lifetime Steelers fan, I’m rooting for their longtime rival. Joe Burrow’s play seems to have them destined for a championship.” Chris Eiswerth, head football coach from South Williamsport said, “Cincinnati Bengals 31, Los Angeles Rams 27. Burrow is a winner! Strong run game and the Bengals play great defense!” Jersey Shore’s football coach, Tom Gravish added, “Bengals 24, Rams 13. A new future NFL star has arrived in Joe Burrow. The Rams defense will keep it close, but Joe Cool will prevail with a couple of TD

ly the Cincinnati Bengals this year. They are playing with house money given that they have won just six games in the past two previous seasons, but they are up against the LA Rams that are hot and playing on their home field. Plus, the Rams are hungry after losing poorly to the Patriots in the 2019 Super Bowl and getting clobbered last year in the Divisional Playoff Round by the Green Bay Packers. My head tells me to go with the Rams in a rout — but my heart is making the prediction: Bengals 28 - Rams 24.” Lou Hunsinger Jr. kept his prediction short. He called in with a 27-21 Rams win. Andrea cooked up this prediction, “All I know is that’s it’s going to be an awesome Halftime Show and I’m rooting for whoever wins. *Insert my famous cheesy smile here*” Finally, on the writers’ side, we have Bernadette Ulsamer. Now, normally she uses her fashion savvy to pick based on uniform colors. However, this year she thinks both are hideous and refuses to choose.

SUPER BOWL passes.” Shannon Manning, coach from Central Mountain believes the Rams will take it by six. “The Super Bowl home game is a huge advantage! The Bengals struggle to consistently find the end zone. If Stafford avoids having a ‘Stafford Moment,’ Rams win!” Sean Tetreault, head coach of the Muncy Indians, thinks that the Rams are going to win big 34-19. “I believe the Rams pass rush will limit the Bengals’ deep passing game, and LA’s multiple weapons on offense will give the Bengals’ defense troubles to match up against.” WASD athletic director Sean McCann is calling a 24-14 Rams win. He thinks the Rams’ defense is the key to their win, plus the experience of Stafford. Paul Bo is on the call with a 2417 Rams win. He said, “OBJ goes kongin’.” Another local voice in sports, Gary Chrisman from KISS-FM, thinks

Michael R. Lingg

the Bengals are going to take it. Another close call of 27-24. “Joe Burrow does it again with a last-second, 4th quarter rally in LA.” I don’t like to make things political, but we did have a couple of locals throw their hats in the ring. Williamsport Mayor Derek Slaughter said, “31-28 Bengals. It’s a home game for the Rams. However, the Bengals have been resilient, and I think this is their year to raise the Lombardy trophy.” And Representative Joe Hamm added, “Bengals 30 Rams 27 Final. Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Evan McPherson have big games in leading the Bengals to their first Super Bowl win.” It’s not often that the Feds get involved in Webb Weekly, but US Congressman Fred Keller offered his pick, “I predict a 30-27 Bengals win because Joe Burrow is a proven winner, and I like the way he has been leading his team down the stretch.”

is taking the Bengals 35-28. Hopefully, their boss doesn’t see this. Charlie Levering from Keystone Furniture is also making calls based on uniform. He likes the Ram better, so he thinks they will win by 6. Dan Klingerman also has some thoughts on the game, “I think Los Angeles will win and win big. Several factors. Possibly by two touchdowns. I believe that Cincinnati has been playing over their head; LA Defense will be too much for Cincinnati, and being played in homefield can’t hurt. Time for Joe Burrow to have an off game. Bengals Offensive line will never stop Aaron Donald or Von Miller.” Brian Peace from Murray Motors offered these notes, “Rams have two great receivers, Kupp and Beckham they are too good to be stopped. Plus, the Rams have a great defensive line. Rams 30 to Bengals 24.” Mike Rupert, from Rupert’s Specialty Meats, believes that the Rams are going to win 31-14. That’s quite the spread! A few of our advertisers got in on the prediction fun too! Brent Fish from Fish Real Estate, “I love sports fans, and so I’m pulling for the Bengals. Their base is so much more passionate as opposed to the Rams, who can’t seem to even sell half their stadium’s tickets to their own fans. So I’ll go Bengals 24-17.” Leslie Howard from Blaise Alexander thinks that the Bengals have this in the bag! Rennie Rodarmel Sr., from over at Allstate, said that this is Cincinnati’s time. He is insuring a 31-17 win. Brent Peace, new GM at Central Equipment, says that the Bengals are going to pick up the win! “3027. Burrow is the up-and-coming star quarterback who will shine for years to come!” Rick Quigley for Fairfield, “Rams 28-24. Rams have more experience.” Fair enough. Speaking of Fairfield, Eric Hamilton at the Montoursville store is picking up Cincy, 28-24. Mike Rosamilia from Ford of Williamsport

added his two cents, “Well, being a Buffalo Bills Fan, my enthusiasm in this year’s Superbowl is certainly diminished. Also with no Steelers, no Giants, no Eagles, no Patriots, no Commanders (YUCK), I think the eastern US may not be as excited about this game. But as far as predicting the winner, let’s look at both teams. The Rams, on paper, should easily win. With people like Kupp, OBJ and Stafford on offense scoring tons of points, complimented by an all-star defense featuring Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey and new additions Von Miller and Eric Weddle (who came out of retirement), their defense is stacked. But the Bengals look like a team of destiny this year. They knocked off the AFC’s number one seed, the Titans, then their defense did what Buffalo’s D couldn’t do — they stymied the KC offense. Plus their offense is really powerful with running back Mixon, and young sensation Joe Burrow at QB and his connection with Chase his favorite receiver, who he played with in college. Though I

A

gentle giant who served his community and his God well died on January 24 at the age of 77. That man was Curley Jett, who had the historic distinction of being the first African American Police Chief of the City of Williamsport. Curley did not live his life necessarily to be a trailblazer, but he did live his life serving others. He came to Williamsport from Harrisburg in the early 1970s, first attending what was then Williamsport Area Community College, now Penn College. He then applied to be a policeman and overcame many barriers to become a Williamsport police officer in 1973. Interestingly, the late 1970s was the high watermark of the employment of African Americans as Williamsport policemen. Curley was one of five African Americans in the department at that time. He steadily rose through the ranks until he eventually became chief of the department during the administration of Mayor Steven Cappelli, who appointed him chief. Curley retired from the department as chief in 2001. Curley always strongly believed in the people part of policing and was a strong advocate for community policing. He

believed it was best for officers to get out of their cars and circulate and get to personally know the people in the neighborhoods they were serving and policing. That is probably reflective of the fact that Curley was a “people person” and loved serving others. One of Curley’s former colleagues on the police department, former Captain and later District Judge, Jim Carn, recalled him fondly in a post on Facebook, writing, “Curley, Tony Evans, Tom Croft, Joe Eck and I all went through the Allentown Police Academy together over 48 years ago in the fall of 1973. At the academy, a group of us were watching a ‘Three Stooges’ comedy one night after class, and Moe called Curly ‘Curlington.’ Some of us then hung the name of ‘Curlington’ on Jett as his humorous formal name, and he seemed to like it. I was probably partnered with Curley more than anyone else for the best part of five years. We responded to a lot of serious as well as hilarious calls addressing the crazy things people do. He used to about drive me out of the cruiser with his smoking, CB set barking, and his music cranked up full blast to the point of vibrating the car windows. Godspeed, Curley.” Larry Moore, former director of the

CURLEY JETT Bethune-Douglass Community Center, knew Curley on a close personal basis. They worked together on many projects at BD, and Curley was always involved closely in the activities at the center. “It is hard to adequately describe Curley on what he meant to me and to the Williamsport community. He was an iconic, larger-than-life figure,” Moore told Webb Weekly. “He was always willing to help anyone who needed his help. He was a very generous and giving man. He had a great heart.” Moore said Curley loved working with youth and helping to send them on the

right path of life. “I remember many times when Curley would stop on his lunch break and shoot hoops with the kids at BD and ask them how they were doing in school and emphasize to them the value of education. He loved the BethuneDouglass Center and eventually served as the president of its board of directors,” Moore said. Moore remembers Curley as a funloving guy who enjoyed a good time. “We were very close. I remember that me, Jim Wilkinson and Curley did a lot of stuff together and had a lot of fun. We

were like the Three Musketeers,” said Moore. Moore noted Curley’s strong religious faith. “Curley was a man of God. He loved his God and served him well. He was blessed by the Lord. Curley gave of himself as an associate pastor of the Love Unlimited Ministry and at the Shiloh Baptist Church.” I also remember Curley quite well. I remember getting to know him somewhat while my late father was Emergency Management Director for the City of Williamsport from 1976 to 1996. I would see him at various times at police headquarters, but I would also see him at various fire and accident scenes as

well as sometimes just strolling around the neighborhoods just getting to know the people he served better. When he would see me, he would always ask how I was doing and call me “Junior” since I had the same first name as my dad. He always smiled when he did that; he did it with the infectious smile that he had. You sensed right off that that this man cared about people and about his community. I think this quote from an African sage named Kalu Ndukwe Kalu epitomizes Curley best, “The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone. But the things you do for others remain as your legacy.” Using that criterion, Curley has a wonderful legacy.

uch is being said these says, and more is inferred about “Williamsport waking up” and “getting busy,” “pulling together,” with the use of like figures of speech that imply a scarecrow condition of things which neither facts nor fancy justify. It is such preachments as these in the half sepulchral tones in which they are made these days that needlessly frighten and dishearten. As a matter of fact there is nothing organically wrong with Williamsport, there was never a time in all her history that her workmen were more busily employed; her merchants but closed a year than which none was better in even volume of business; her banks show a remarkable increase in the number of depositors, while the resources of these institutions in the aggregate, show a truly wonderful conservation for a city of this size; the building operations of last year were very substantial and already the outlook for this year is ordinarily Join us for a Free In-Person Meeting on

hopeful: the Board of Trade is no less effectively fixed to work, nor any the less watchful in the promotion of the city’s welfare than before, the city government is in safe hands; a quite substantial amount of public improvements is slated for this summer; the city has lost nothing of prestige in the matter of healthfulness; local businesses have been and are being enlarged. By this spirit of groaning and complaining and sighing now being engaged in, we are doing more to dishearten ourselves and becloud the horizon of the future, then any outside forces could possibly do. We need a courageous assertion of the inalterable faith in the ability and security of Williamsport, an appreciation of the undeniable fact that Williamsport has not only held its own during these recent years’ industrial quietude, but there has been a substantial advance and that its face is squarely toward the sun of progress, its heart imbued with the buoyancy of hope, and its hands busily engaged in fashioning growing greatness.

County Hall Corner: Wake Me Up When It is Over By Larry Stout

Call 570-326-9322

O

ne of the political words that has become a weapon and joke, depending on your political persuasion, is the word ‘woke.’ It came into vogue in recent years to describe a person who is consciously awake to concerns in relation to social and racial justice. The Urban Dictionary, mocking, notes that being “woke” is opinions that a white,

upper-class person pretends to hold that he thinks a black lower-class person might hold. But it goes far beyond race — it essentially refocuses everything in society around a prism that all of life is biased in one way or another because of inequity. Thus, it is up to the social justice warriors to get it all straightened out. This ‘narrative’ (another overworked and misinterpreted word) has become the political language of our day. If you are not progressively

woke, which means that you embrace climate change, the green movement, racial reconciliation through systemic changes in law enforcement, rights through grievance, etc., then you are behind the times at best and a Neanderthal at worst. To the Woke Folks, to defy this reality is putting the brakes on the progress of human society. It is not so much that society has shifted as much as those who impact our society has shifted. The movers and shakers in our world today are the information and entertainment media, educational institutions at all levels, foundations and think tanks, and governmental entities both elected and appointed. Whole books have been written on how these institutions have sought to reshape our world, but here are a just a couple of examples to illustrate the illogical logic of the Woke. Take the Hollywood film industry, for example. Has anyone noticed how important it is to have female superheroes these days? “Wonder Woman,” “Black Widow,” female “Ghostbusters,” etc. Championing women is fine, of course, but in the past, heroic women were highlighted because they were able to outsmart men, not beat them up. Just look at Princess Leia in the original “Star

Wars” movies. She was clever and determined and able to defend herself when necessary, contrasted to her fellow rebels Luke and Han Solo, who were brave and tough but knuckleheads. Now compare her to the later “Star Wars” heroine, the lone desert scavenger Rey. She is a totally self-reliant, kick-butt tough gal that is carrying the water for her stormtrooper deserter and wimpy sidekick, Finn. The latest and possibly worst entry to this genre is the action movie, “The 355.” This film has been almost universally panned because it requires discarding all rationality to believe that these 100-pound runway models are able to seemingly kick the crap out of men three times their size. Not just that, but every man is either evil, stupid, or both. Today’s Hollywood hero wom-

en must be tougher, stronger, smarter, morally sounder than men. Welcome to today’s Woke Entertainment. The Woke World leaves no stones unturned. They look for inequity everywhere, even in maps. Yes, even maps must be ‘woke.’ Why? Well, here is the problem. As we all know, our planet is a three-dimensional sphere; thus, when it is spread out in two dimensions on paper, it will not be proportionally what it is in actuality. The standard map was the Mercator, named after the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator who designed a world map over 400 years ago. He was trying to enable sailors to plot a smooth, straight course across the ocean. Still, to accomplish this, he had to sacrifice accuracy in other areas, namely, the relative sizes of the continents. Greenland is a good example. Look on a Mercator world map, and Greenland looks almost as big as the continent of Africa. In actuality, Greenland is about the size of the Democratic Republic of Congo. You could fit fourteen Greenlands in the size of Africa. For centuries, this has been vexing for map makers, and many options have popped up. The one that most cartographic historians

favor today is the Eckert projection, now in its IV version, which preserves proportionality without distorting the shape of continents. This would seem to make logical sense. However, the new and improved map is known as the Peters projection, which has been used in schools in Great Britain and now in the Boston School District, which comes from the concerns of the American Cartographic Association, the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, and the National Council for Geographic Education (all the woke folks) who believe that maps should be “the beginning of a conversation about the social implications of maps.” In other words, maps should reflect how people ‘perceive’ (or should we say, how they are supposed to perceive) the world in which we live. In establishing these new maps into the Boston School District, Hayden Frederick-Clark, Director of Cultural Proficiency, remarked, “we were primarily concerned with the notion of decolonizing our curriculum.” Lesson is over today, children; just remember to think properly about social justice when you look at a world map.

COOKIN

her since. (Kristen Patryna!) Love is when your friends bring you pizza, and you can eat it in your robe. Love is having two parents who love you so unconditionally it hurts. Love is being married to your high school sweetheart and falling more in love each year. Love is holding your children close and hearing them call you Momma and Daddy. Love is the one thing we can count on in this life. Without love, we have

nothing. So love with all of your heart and love things big and small. Love is one of God’s greatest gifts!! Fluffy Icing Ingredients: – 4 egg whites – 1 cup granulated sugar – 2 tablespoon light corn syrup – 2 teaspoon vanilla extract Bring a shallow pot of water to a boil. Place all the ingredients for

the filling in a bowl that can rest in the boiling pot without its bottom touching the boiling water. Beat the ingredients until the bottom of the bowl is too hot to touch. About 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the bowl and beat with the whisk attachment on your stand mixer for about 10 minutes or until fluffy and pretty stiff. You can also use a handheld mixer, but it will take longer. Top on an angel food cake like I did, or even cookies and cakes!

T

he Financial Aid Office at Pennsylvania College of Technology is offering its resources to help current and future college students and their families complete the 2022-23 Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Colleges and universities require the FAFSA to determine student eligibility for federal and state grants, federal loans, and some scholarships. Penn College is hosting a free FAFSA completion workshop to facilitate the online application process. The session is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 4:30-7 p.m. in Room 202 of the college’s Madigan Library. Oneon-one assistance in the Financial Aid Office is also available via appointment. Registration is required for both options. Students currently enrolled or planning to attend any college or university are invited. Students who are 23 or younger should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Most first-time students can complete the FAFSA within 45 minutes. Attendees planning to submit their FAFSA during the completion session should create a student and/or parent FSA ID at least three days prior at www.studentaid.gov. They should also bring copies of their

2020 financial documents, including federal tax returns, W-2 forms, untaxed income statements, record of child support paid or received, and amount of their current assets. Financial Aid staff will help student and parent taxpayers use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, which allows FAFSA filers to electronically transfer federal tax return information into the FAFSA. “Our Financial Aid team is excited to once again host this important event,” said Jessica S. Hunter, director of financial aid at Penn College. “Completing the FAFSA is essential. It truly is the cornerstone application in the financial aid process. Our goal is to help each student establish a foundation that puts them in position to maximize all financial aid resources. We understand that the financial aid process can be stressful, but we are here to assist students and their families successfully navigate the process.” To register for the FAFSA completion session or one-on-one in-office assistance, visit www.pct.edu/finaid, email finaid@ pct.edu or call the Financial Aid Office at 570-327-4766. Penn College is a national leader in applied technology education. Visit www.pct.edu, email admissions@pct.edu or call toll-free 800-367-9222.

Call 570-326-9322

High blood pressure is often called the silent killer. You might not have symptoms, but it’s a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The good news is, in most cases, you can manage your blood pressure to lower your risk for serious health problems.2 Your healthiest heart begins with regular visits to your primary care provider, who can help monitor and improve important, heart-related factors like blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

room to room, always on the opposite sides of campus – do-able, as long as you didn’t have to fetch something from a locker or another spot. Do-able, if you could run fast, leap over crouching freshmen, and dodge slow-moving teachers. Do-able, as in the new book “Admissions” by Kendra James, if you didn’t have other frustrations to deal with. For three years after college, Kendra

James’ Saturday mornings were set: she spent them speaking to lowincome parents and prospective students at a private high school on the upper east side of Manhattan, talking about the benefits of private school and the “golden tickets” that would pay for this opportunity. She spoke from experience: James had graduated from Taft, a private high school in Connecticut. That had been a natural conclusion: after the school began accepting African Americans, James’ father

was of the first Black graduates. This made James a legacy student, and she was used to being at Taft, she even knew some of the teachers. Even so, private school was an adjustment. Making friends was difficult for James then, partly because she was a Black goth nerd who loved Harry Potter and Xena: Warrior Princess, and partly because she’d been raised with incorrect perceptions about other Black people. She didn’t know that rap music and intelligence could

privileged she was – an acknowledgment that sometimes appears as guilt. Still, she admits to familial wealth, social blindness, a life of ease, and that sometimes she didn’t know what she didn’t know. The acceptance of that aside, this book is really quite fun: though she graduated not so long ago, reading James’ book is like stepping back in time to fumble with the combination on your locker between classes. It’s like wishing for an invite to the Cool Kids table in the lunchroom. It’s a love story to that perfect teacher, the ill-conceived “it’ll go on your permanent record” caper, and a BFF you never see again after graduation. There’s an urgent message inside this book that’s essential reading for educators, but it’s also just plain enjoyable to have. Find “Admissions.” It’s a class act.

exist together, or how to “code switch.” It even took awhile for her to understand that not all insults were really insults. By the beginning of her second year, her “mid” or sophomore year, James had a string of friends and plenty of confidence. Her nerdiness had a place at Taft, she’d learned to fit in, and she was mostly happy there with a new best friend and dreams of romance. But there were things that bothered her, that she didn’t quite have the words for yet. There was quiet racism sometimes, and “microaggressions” that James absolutely noticed – just as she saw the racism in a huge, lifechanging accusation for a crime she didn’t do... Please don’t give “Admissions” an eye-roll. Author Kendra James concedes, many times and in many ways, that she knew then how

an you think of a tool that you use more often than your own hands? It’s inarguable that they are extremely valuable, but we often take them for granted. Due to their frequent and wide variety of uses, hand injuries are fairly common. Our hands are extremely complex body parts that make up more than 25% of all the bones in our bodies and these bones have little protection as they are surrounded by a thin layer of muscle and fat. With such high risks, we need to be sure we do what we can to protect our hands. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, one million workers are treated in an Emergency Department for hand

injuries annually. When these injuries occur, it is possible to help restore function and get back into action. Traumatic Hand Injuries Common hand, wrist, and forearm injuries may include fractures, tendon injuries, ligament strains and dislocations, blood vessel injuries, burns, amputated digits and limbs, or nerve injuries. Treatments can range from a simple R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression and elevate) series of the injury site to needing surgery and physical therapy. After an evaluation, your doctor will provide you with a personal treatment plan for the best results possible. When to Seek Care The majority of traumatic hand injuries will unfortunately bring you to the Emergency Department. Even minor injuries can become severe without prompt and proper

Three Strategies for Boosting Your Creativity: Part 1

Call 570-326-9322

T

he word creativity can be defined as the act of forming something novel that has value. It may be a physical object such as a piece of art or something intangible like an idea. Creativity is important for many reasons including the development of problem solving skills and can impact everything from science to art and

everything in between. It also helps people deal with uncertainty because creative people are better able to adapt their thinking to ever changing situations. Creative people are better able to see the big picture and not get bogged down with unimportant details. When you are feeling down, being creative can help to motivate you to take action by distracting from

something that is bothering you. The list of benefits to being creative goes on and on. The bottom line is that creativity is simply good for you. Though creativity doesn’t come Dave Bellomo naturally to everyone it can and should be developed. So, the big question is how can we foster creativity? New York Times best-selling author and journalist, Steven Kolter says that there are three main things that everyone should be doing to boost their creativity levels. 1.) Befriend your brain - Play nice with your brain; specifically your anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The ACC plays a role in attention and is the part of the brain that helps to correct errors by detecting conflicting signals. In an excerpt from his book Art of the Impossible: Peak Performance Primer, Kolter discusses the work of Northwestern neuroscientist Mark Beeman and Drexel University cognitive psychologist John Kounios.

In their research, Beeman and Kounios gave people a series of remote association questions then used EEG and MRI to monitor their brain activity. They found that right before people viewed a problem that they’d eventually solve using intuition, there was heightened activity in their brain’s ACC. This included alternative strategies for solving a problem. “The brain can’t use two different strategies at the same time. Some are strongly activated, because they’re the most obvious and some are weak and only remotely associated to the problem — odd thoughts, long-shot ideas. These ideas are the creative ones,” wrote Kounios. An active ACC can detect non-obvious ideas and signal the brain to switch attention to them. So how do we activate the ACC? Simple, be happy. Research has shown that when we’re in a good mood we are much more sensitive to creating thoughts that are outside our normal range of ideas. Conversely, when we are unhappy our brain tends to be much more closed off to strange, unconventional ideas, thus limiting our options. Negativity also makes us less likely to act if we do think of

norepinephrine, endorphins and dopamine. This further decreases anxiety and allows us to be more open to new possibilities. In addition, the time we spend exercising is time our brains can take a break from concentrating on a problem which allows the brain to work on problems in the background. Sleep is also critical to revving up the ACC. It improves energy levels and gives us the strength to meet new challenges. It is also involved in creating a positive mood and increasing our willingness to take risks. Last, sleep is the most important incubation period for ideas and allows our brain to find connections we would never discover during waking hours. In pt. 2 of this article we will be discussing the importance of “Nontime” and “Thinking inside of the box”. Two important strategies for getting those creative juices flowing and Living Well. something new. To achieve this creativity fostering happiness, Kolter writes that we need to come back to the tried and true methods gratitude, mindfulness, exercise, and sleep. Gratitude trains the brain to focus on the positive which allows us to filter alternative ideas less often. This not only improves mood but it also increases the likelihood of new ideas. Gratitude also allows our brain more raw material for ideas, thus giving us a better chance of coming up with new and different things. Mindfulness teaches the brain to be calm and focused. This distance from stray thoughts and feelings gives the ACC time to come up with alternative ideas that might normally be disregarded. The kind of mindfulness training you’re using matters, writes Kolter. Alternative thinking requires an open monitoring style of meditation which means instead of trying to ignore thoughts and feelings, you allow them to flow without judgment. Exercise, known for its ability to lower stress, helps the body to rid itself of the stress hormone cortisol and boosts the feel-good chemicals serotonin,

he National Retail Federation indicates Valentine’s Day is the fifth largest spending event in the United States after the winter holidays and Mother’s Day. Each February, people clamber to get gifts for their sweethearts and create romantic memories through fine dining and decadent desserts. According to Finder, a tool used to navigate complex decision-making processes, Americans were expected to spend a combined $50 billion on gifts and activities in 2021, with gifts averaging $187. Men tend to spend more than women on Valentine’s Day. Everyone may be spending more on Valentine’s Day this year due to inflation. In 2021, used cars and trucks, oil, meats and poultry, airline fares, and women’s apparel were just some of the items that increased significantly in price. Finding ways to be frugal may be challenging this February, but these ideas are a start. DIY card While a card may be the smallest purchase on your shopping list, you can still save an average of $3 to $5 on a card by making one yourself or sending a free digital greeting. Dine in Restaurants are popular options for couples on Valentine’s Day, but they can be busy and prices may be inflated. Many also offer limited prix fixe menus. By making a meal at home and picking and choosing less-costly ingredients, couples can save a P A 1 4 8 4 9 9

substantial amount of money. Be flexible with jewelry You don’t have to spend a fortune to make an impression with gifts. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but other stones are often less costly. Try giving a birthstone as an alternative. If gold is out of your price range, many sterling silver options are just as beautiful. In addition, consider warehouse retailers for jewelry purchases, as they may have lower costs. Frugal flowers The cost of roses definitely goes up near Valentine’s Day, so consider giving another flower. Lilies can be lovely or maybe that special someone has a signature flower. A flowering plant, which will cost less than many bouquets and will last far beyond Valentine’s Day if given care, is another alternative to consider. Save on chocolate Sweet treats are the name of the game, but many popular chocolate boxes can be pricey this time of year. Plan ahead and keep a stockpile of chocolates from Halloween or Christmas. Then use floral wire or pipe cleaners to turn bite-sized packages into a handmade chocolate bouquet. Otherwise, purchase various chocolate bars and package them with hot chocolate, chocolate cookies and other decadent offerings in a themed gift basket. Saving on Valentine’s Day comes down to being creative and focusing on the sentiment rather than the price.

– I knew I loved you with all my heart the first time I passed gas in front of you and didn’t apologize. – Fish sticks and chicken nuggets are not good entrée choices for a romantic surf and turf dinner. – Love is a blissful dream. Marriage is the alarm clock. – Unsure what to write on a Valentine’s Day card? Never use these words. Fleshy, colossal mistake, stench, electrolysis, diet, burning rash and weep uncontrollably. No, you’re not fat, there’s just more of you to admire.

Call 570-326-9322

t’s said when it comes to finding love “Every pot has a lid.” If that’s true, I guess that’s why I’m a colander. It’s bad enough being perpetually single 364 days of the year, but being single on Valentine’s Day is like pouring salt in a raw wound and rubbing it with sandpaper while listening to Jenifer Lopez sing. Nobody wants to be a solo on Valentine’s Day when they should be a duo. Every year on February 14th, it appears the entire world is in love and a gigantic spotlight is focused on those sorry single souls and letting the world know you’re just a table for one. And there’s no escaping it no matter where you go on the 14th. Restaurants offering romantic dinner specials, grocery stores with more flowers than a botanical garden and stores stocked with so many Valentine balloons, stuffed bears and heart shaped boxes of chocolates you’d think Cupid vomited all over the place. There are heart-shaped donuts, pizzas,

cookies, cakes and tarts. Don’t forget the rose scented candles, boxer shorts covered in red hearts and those vile, taste like chalk conversation hearts. And those sickening sweet and nauseatingly cute Valentine cards with images of fuzzy puppies. And where do these card companies find these sharp as tacks scribes that write the greeting for these Valentine greeting cards? Last year my cat Braveheart sent me a Valentine asking, “What did the pine tree say to the maple tree on Valentine’s Day? ‘Wood you be mine?’” I’m not sure which is more depressing, that my cat sent me a Valentine or the Valentine my cat sent me was the only one I received. To avoid being lonely and loveless this Valentine’s Day and receiving cards from furry felines, here’s some advice I learned the hard way. – Never say he reminds you of your grandfather. – You’re just as weird as me, that makes us a perfect pair! – You tell everyone I fell head over heels in love with you, but in reality, you

tripped me. – “Because you look so much older, you pay the check and they’ll give you a senior citizen discount” is never a wise thing to tell your 44-year-old girlfriend during a Valentine dinner. – If love is the answer, can you rephrase the question? – We make a great pair because we both think I’m fantastic. – Love is blind, but marriage is the wakeup call. – I was afraid of the dark until I saw you one night without makeup. – Money can’t buy love its true, but what it can buy I really can use.

The Roving Sportsman… Firearm (Handgun) Training By Jon Pries

R

ecently revealed statistics verified that 2021 was another banner year when it came to firearms sales, and 2022 is headed for another year of robust sales. Personal protection handguns have been and will continue to be a majority of that business. In fact, there were over 5 million firearms purchased by new gun owners throughout the 12 months of last year! On the plus side, that is 5 million more folks that share a concern for protecting our Second Amendment rights. On the downside, I am concerned as to how many of those folks purchase a firearm for the first time, particularly a handgun, and feel that is the end of the process. The purchase is, however, just the beginning. Learning about - and more importantly, understanding – the rights and responsibilities of gun ownership are critical to responsible firearm possession. These subjects are covered in the free Gun Law Seminars that are often being held in the area thanks to the efforts of 83rd

Legislative District Representative Jeff C. Wheeland and 84th Legislative District Representative Joe Hamm. There is a second and equally critical aspect to responsible gun ownership, and that is to train and become completely proficient with the weapon you possess. Sure, it would be of some benefit when your neighbor, friend, or relative takes you to the nearby shooting range and spends time with you to help you become familiar with any new firearm. But gun ownership is serious business; thus, the task of being trained in proper gun handling and gun safety should be trusted only to the professionals. To that end, we are fortunate to have in our area a business that is currently providing multiple opportunities for new gun owners as well as experienced shooters to acquire or increase their proficiency. That business is the National Range and Armory, located at 531 Washington Boulevard in Williamsport, PA. Entering their showroom, one is immediately impressed with the quantity and quality of self-defense firearms

Artisan Hearing Technologies, LLC adding quality to life every day

“My hearing aids are over five years old, and have served me well over the years. It’s time for a new hearing aids and to my surprise my insurance covered my hearing aids in full! I received hearing aids that retail for $6000 paid in full by my insurance company. The first thing that happens when you walk in the door at Artisan Hearing Technologies, is that they check your insurance for you to see if you have a hearing aid benefit. I have always loved the service, professionalism, and staff at Artisan, however I am so excited with my new insurance! I do not have to pay one penny for my new hearing aids. From my experience it is very important that you have a hearing evaluation, and your hearing aid customized to your hearing loss by a professional. I am getting all of this for free with my insurance. Before you ever consider buying something over-the-counter, I suggest you at least have your insurance checked. And based on my experience in the past, I was very surprised at how many insurance companies are now covering hearing aids through the Medicare supplemental plans, when they did not 5 years ago. I was also very happy that Artisan Hearing is a provider for most of the insurance companies that are providing these benefits.” ~ Gerry Green

Night is held from 4-7 p.m. The basics of handling a firearm are covered with an emphasis on safely handling a weapon. Here too, no reservation is required, and the fee is a mere $10.00. Continued or advanced instruction is available to individuals or groups at an hourly rate, and conventional rifles and pistols can be rented at an hourly rate. A basic 4-hour handgun course includes two hours of classroom instruction and two hours of professional coaching on the indoor range. Additionally, there is handgun training available for those with an interest in defensive use of a firearm for the purpose of concealed carry. Ownership of a firearm, particularly a personal defense handgun, is something that needs to be taken very seriously. To learn about the responsibilities and liabilities of gun ownership, attend one of the upcoming Gun Law Seminars. To find out about where and when they are being held, contact the office of either Representative Joe Hamm at (570) 546-2084 or Representative Jeff Wheeland at (570) 321-1270. Ice Fishing: It Puts Food on the Table

have discovered that we udging from the ice-fishing humans are numbers of people I not the only ones who see see on the ice these fishing on a frozen lake as days, it appears that the source of some great ice-fishing is a growing dinner fare. I was reminded winter activity. Not only of this scenario just recently is ice-fishing an enjoyable when a fishing friend, Bill way to spend a day, but it is also, as the title of this story Ken Wilhelm, and I set up for suggests, an opportunity Hunter a day of ice fishing on a local lake. As the day wore to put some delicious food on the table. Now I know on, we noticed a Great Blue Heron that a number of my friends see it standing on the ice nearby, and as differently since they would rather we dropped our freshly caught fish stop by the local grocery store and next to us, the heron drew closer. At just pick up a package of haddock one point, the heron got within a for dinner that night. Still, there’s few feet of Bill’s fish but backed off. I something special about catching eventually tossed one of my bluegills your own fresh panfish and filleting to the eagerly awaiting heron; it and preparing them. Panfish fillets gobbled the fish down, and minutes rolled in egg batter and crackers later, I saw it quietly sneaking up and then fried in butter to a golden behind another unaware fisherman. The heron kept visiting anglers all brown are awful hard to beat. What I find interesting is that afternoon, no doubt coming up over the past couple of years, I with a pretty good day’s fish feast.

that hard-water gang. On several occasions, I watched eagles swoop down and grab a fish flopping on the ice, sometimes only thirty yards from the fisherman who just caught it. I’ve seen this activity on a couple of lakes over the past few years. While eagles eat a variety of different animals, including carrion, fish actually constitute about 60-90 percent of their diet. So it seems that the ice-fishing gang may be increasing in numbers, but along with that increase, there seems to also be an increase in the winged freeloaders. Can’t say that I blame them; after all, who wouldn’t want a free fish dinner?

If you are familiar with Great Blue Herons, you no doubt expect to see them in the summer standing or slowly wading on their long legs in a stream, pond, or the edge of a lake in search of fish or frogs. While most herons migrate to the coast or south, some do stay here even during these cold winter days. No doubt what keeps them here is access to open water where they can find food or, in the situation described above, a frozen lake with ice fishermen who get too far from their catch when the winged burglar shows up. Herons aren’t the only winged critters that have learned to feed off the ice-fishing dinner table. Bald Eagles have become a common sight while ice fishing. Several years ago, I began to notice eagles perched in trees near where my buddies and I were ice fishing. On occasion, an ice fisherman would leave the ice accidentally, leaving behind a fish, and it didn’t take long for the eagles to realize that some good eating could be had by hanging around

Bringing Bower Basketball Back

f you happened to pass by the Curtin Middle School last Saturday, you might have heard a familiar sound from the past emanating from that old familiar educational landmark. If you thought you were hearing things or might want to experience it for yourself, stop by again this Saturday. At a time when some are engaging in activities to erase portions of our history, volunteers associated with the John H. Bower youth basketball

league are awakening the shadows darkened by the COVID outbreak with an abbreviated league schedule being played the four Saturdays of February. For 100 years after its November 1921 launch, the league that bears Bower’s name has been known as the “Oldest and Largest Church League in America.” Pre-dating Carl Stotz’s founding of Little League Baseball, Bower loved the game of basketball. He’d get every boy he could and spend his own money to pay their fee at the

Y. Since then, it has been that kind of spirit and dedication by others that has kept the league operational. COVID forced the cancellation of league activities Scott last year, but a small Lowery group of league volunteers, headed by Bob Cellini, have led efforts for a scaled-down operation this year. “We’ve reserved the gym at Curtin Middle School for the four Saturdays in February, and we are hoping to get a fair turnout of kids interested in playing basketball,” Cellini explained. “Given the lateness of our organized efforts, it remains uncertain as to how successful we will be. We don’t think we will fail because of being able to have the gym open for kids to play some basketball as this league has always done; what could go wrong? “A small regret we have is that this year we are only opening the league for those youngsters kindergarten thru sixth grade. Throughout its history, the league has served youngsters thru

grade twelve. We just weren’t sure we had enough manpower to cover all the grades this year in such a short season.” According to the best records available, the league started in November 1921 when John Bower began taking kids to the YMCA. Bower wasn’t a big man, but he was considered to be one of the best athletes in the Williamsport area at the time. Beginning with Bower’s early efforts, the league operated every year until last year, when we had to cancel because of COVID. Since its inception, the teams in the league were sponsored by the various churches, with administrative volunteers serving the modest role of coordinating by scheduling the games. The churches would take care of everything else with regard to costs they may incur and getting the volunteer coaches needed. Over the years, there has been an entry fee varying from $25 to $50 per team to participate in the league. In operating, the league took care of the costs of paying the officials, gym rental, providing the basketballs and championship trophies, and some related supply costs. “Over the years, one of the strengths of the league has been the larger church parishes in the county, that because of

were most appreciative of Kirby Shimp when he was running the Arena. We enjoyed a nice 10-year run playing our games at the Arena and YMCA through his efforts. During that time, the league enjoyed record participation numbers, with over 100 teams playing. Two years ago, we had less than half that number. “Over the years, I’ve often been asked how many volunteers it took to keep the league going. I’ve always pointed out that everybody coaching a team for their church are volunteers. The churches and their volunteers really have done all the work. The league has a handful of volunteers who do the

administrative work, and we’ve been able to get things done.” Literally, thousands of today’s area adults can look back to fond memories playing in the Bower League. For a few seasons, I enjoyed coaching the Christ Episcopal Church Bower League team. We would practice once a week with Saturday mornings providing fun and excitement for the kids and parents. Among those youngsters coached on that team were Nick Henrko and Bruce Alling, who would go on to play important roles as members of the Loyalsock and Williamsport High School teams.

As for Cellini himself, he described his satisfaction with the league as, “Being able to see the longevity of the league and seeing the generations come through. Some of those kids I coached years ago are now coaching their kids in the league. I’ve also heard some very kind words, and that has been rewarding.” Years ago, records showed that when asked how long the Bower League would continue, once league official responded, “As long as youth want to play basketball.” Hats off to Bob Cellini and his group of volunteers for keeping this wonderful tradition alive.

having a larger number of kids have always been able to field a team,” Cellini explained. “There have been some cases when smaller churches only had a few kids interested in playing; the larger churches were willing to provide them a place to play on their rosters. That allowed every church to participate, whether it was directly or indirectly. Just as in the schools and communities themselves, we have seen a steady decline in the number of kids playing youth sports. “Throughout our 100 years, the league has played its games at the YMCA, Curtin school, and Penn College. is the season folks. It is certainly a busy time of year. The St. John Neumann Golden Knights are playing lots of games. COVID concerns and snow days makes it rather difficult. Our schedule seems to change on a daily basis. We aren’t the only ones in the gym three or four nights a week. Everyone is in the same boat. It is insane. We play in the MID PENN Conference. It is a collection of small schools here

in north central Pennsylvania. I enjoy the camaraderie with the coaches. They are all good dudes and we have so much in common. Coaching is hard. And we share our frustrations. There is a lot more to it than showing up to games and running practice. The Golden Knights hosted our chums from the South Side this past Saturday. It was a very intense game. Both teams played well, and Neumann came out on top. My guards are pretty dang good, and they found a way.

double digits. Davion had 19. Hanief scored 17. My man Nas Dymeck was crowned the HOMECOMING KING and had a career high 16. Jerval Weeks-Shuler added 10 and played some great defense. SJNRA 76. Northwest 43. Gary McLerdon played awesome and led the Rangers with 25 points. The Golden Knights headed to Muncy two days later in a very important MID PENN matchup. Neumann gave the Indians their only league loss earlier this season. Muncy is well coached, and they can certainly play. We knew it would be a challenge and it was in front of a

We were back in Jamie Spencer action the following Monday. There is no time to rest. The Knights hosted the Rangers from Northwest. Neumann played well early, and it was a very balanced attack. double. Branson was solid and scored 11. I also have to give some love to Louden Boring. He played great defense and helped Muncy mount a fourth quarter charge. Louden had 10 points and has a great head of hair. It was a tremendous basketball game and both teams got better. We competed and played hard and paid our respects when it was all over. No one stormed the court. SJNRA is now 14-2 and 11-0 in the MID PENN. We are getting there, folks. We have four games left and the boys and I are gearing up for another post-season run. There is a lot more to it. My guys make me look good

both on and off the court. Some might question. Perhaps by the way we play or how we dress. I am so proud of my guys. Again. Most of you don’t see it. My guards are the complete package. Davion Hill is a stud. The junior is the most talented player I have ever coached. He has already received many Division-1 offers, and I am very curious to see where he will land. Davion has a great smile, and he has a great heart. My man signs several autographs and takes hundreds of selfies with little fans after every game. I am dead serious. Davion is always the last to leave the locker room and he will even walk through and pick up

our trash. I never ask him to do it. It is just the type of kid that he is. I am so proud of Hanief Clay. My man has been through so much. Neef had to sit out his entire sophomore year because of some bogus stuff. Clay has been a high honor roll student the past few semesters. He works so hard in the classroom. Hanief is so good with the young fans. He is a rock star with our elementary school kids. My guys are terrific with my son. Hanief especially. He will often send Jensen a text message to congratulate him. It is a beautiful thing. Best wishes to everyone as you get ready for the postseason. Cheers.

very large crowd. The atmosphere was outstanding. Both teams battled. There were so many runs. Neumann didn’t play their best, but we found a way. We nipped our rivals 67-58 to hang on to first place. Hanief Clay was outstanding. The senior guard shined with 34 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 dimes. Davion Hill was also impressive. He tallied 24 and grabbed 13 boards. I am huge fans of Ross and Branson Eyer. I went to school with their parents, and I have known them both for a very long time. Great kids. Ross can play. He finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds. Another double-
