A Cup of Coffee and a Conversation

A

s most of you know, I’m an early riser. Many of my mornings begin at one of our local eateries with a cup of coffee, a glass of water, and sometimes breakfast. I think it’s very important to get out and about in this world we live in. To have a routine that includes socializing with folks. This doesn’t include any interaction via electronic device. I am very blessed to have many good people to share the morning time with. The Zach Brown Band sums it up with their hit “Same Boat.” The song begins with the lyric, “We’re all in the same boat, fishing in the same holes, wondering where the same time goes.” Please Google it and give it a listen or read the lyrics. It is very well done, like everything the Zack Brown Band does, and covers the current world of today. After listening to that song this past week, well before sunrise, I headed into one of my favorite spots with an idea. I have been asked very frequently recently to address all the problems facing our Nation. If you noticed, I’ve been focusing on our local area and all the good things going on, along with some difficult challenges people are facing. A funny thing in my world, when I don’t write about politics, the state of our County, Commonwealth, or Nation, I hear about

it. When I do write about these topics and move away from the good news, the going ons, and how wonderful our area is, I hear about it. Life is all about finding a balance. So the time has come for a more serious approach to the issues that affect us all. This is where the idea to ask folks what is the greatest current threat to our Nation and our American way of daily life? Those I talked with were Republican, Democrat, Independent, and represented many different walks of life. How do I know this? I simply ask. The first gentleman’s response was firmly stated, “President Biden.” After the next two voices stated the same, one being a Democrat, it was time to take a little different approach. So, I asked if everybody participating viewed the Biden administration as America’s top threat; a resounding “yes” was the answer. So, at this point, the question became, what makes the Biden administration the clear and most present danger to our Country? These answers are in order by how I received them, not prioritized. First response, “The Deep State,” which is bipartisan and hell-bent on taking our Nation in a completely different direction than what is best for the American people. The Deep State is driven by money, power, and individuals’ insatiable need for both.

The lack of term limits is strengthening the Deep State’s hold and making it almost impossible to be dealt with . Next comment was racism and discrimination. It has become the calling card to divide, used by the most Jim powerful in Washington, Webb, Jr. Hollywood, mainstream media, and social media. It’s been used to discriminate against the best-qualified person being hired or appointed. It defines what an applicant should look like instead of what their qualifications should be. Next response was lack of church attendance. The moral and ethical decay within our Nation corresponds with our government and the people moving away from “One Nation Under God.” Most religions are based upon selflessness and loving one’s fellow man. This decline in church attendance has led to a steep rise in selfishness and the personal justification of one’s actions — no matter what Commandment or laws they break. Next comment was border control, or as the person put it, border uncontrolled. There’s a right way and a wrong way to do anything in the United States of America. This begins with becoming an American citizen through following proper immigration laws. What has been enabled and supported by the President and leadership of the Democratic Party

is criminal. They have provided more rights and benefits to someone that isn’t an American citizen. There is no way possible the current policy at the border is protecting the American citizen from criminal and terroristic opportunists. Let alone the threat of the next pandemic being brought into our Country. Next man up stated the current socialistic movement within our government. How those that have been elected to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America are trying to move our Country away from the Constitution and toward a socialistic form of government. President Biden isn’t even close to being liberal enough for these individuals. AOC, the squad, CNN, MSNBC — all can’t praise socialistic ideals enough. They praised China during the Olympics like it was Disneyland. The last person I spoke with calmly added inflation to the list, stating we have the highest inflation rates in over four decades. This will be a silent killer, not only for the American economy but for the hard-working everyday American to pay their bills. This individual works for himself and noted the difficulty in quoting any job because of the cost of material and how it’s only getting worse. I will be focusing on many of these issues in the weeks to come. If you see me when I’m out and about, let me know what your answer is. No name required. Your words may show up in a future column. God Bless America.

ccording to both holidayinsights. com and nationaltoday.com, February 23rd is International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. I have no idea why we need a day for that, let alone an international day for that, but you know what? It’s the end of February, the winter blues are well set in, let’s roll with it. According to an article from the New York Times (I can only assume it was a slow news day), dog biscuits were invented in 1860, when “an Ohio electrician named James Spratt journeyed to London to sell lightning rods. After watching quayside mongrels feasting on hardtack, the dry biscuit that fed sailors on long voyages, Spratt set about making a biscuit for dogs that could serve as their primary food. “Spratt’s Patent Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes were a mix of grains, beetroot, vegetables and ‘the dried unsalted gelatinous parts of Prairie Beef,’ as the company explained in an early advertisement.” These days, dog biscuits and treats come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and flavors. Anything that Fido could possibly want (in moderation of course) and are often the basis of training our furry friends! Let’s be honest, any holiday worth celebrating is worth celebrating well, so, what can we do to celebrate International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day? he world of MotoTrials is demanding, thrilling, and at times dangerous, but this doesn’t deter or scare one area youngster, 14-year-old Coran Calvert, from competing and excelling in them. According to the MotoTrials website, “MotoTrials (formerly ‘Observed Trials’) is now the pinnacle of off-road riding, as the riders tackle the most severe terrain capable of being conquered by any two or four-wheeled machine. When someone looks at the obstacles before the riding starts, a frequent comment is a simple ‘No way!’ A big plus for the spectators is that they can watch from just a few feet away as the riders attempt seemingly impossible obstacles. “MotoTrials competitions consist of ‘sections’ that are physically defined by marker tape. These sections contain challenging features, both natural and artificial. They may include streambeds, boulders, logs, and slopes. Markers identify different skill class levels for competition; the better the com-

petitor, the more severe the obstacles. A trail ‘loop’ connects the sections for the event. A typical event will have 1012 sections, and the competitor must ride the loop and complete the sections up to three times. Riders cannot practice the sections but may inspect each section just before being judged (or observed) on their ride. Then, one at a time, the riders will enter a section on their motorcycle as an observer scores the rider’s performance. “Like golf, where the least number of strokes on the course wins, trials are won by the person who touches their foot to the ground the least number of times over the course of the event. The rider with the lowest score wins. The score goes to a maximum of five points for that section if they fail to reach the end gate in time or crash. Riding a section “clean” without footing is the ultimate goal of all riders (a score of 0).” MotoTrials motorcycles are very specialized machines. Years of development have produced a lightweight, extremely well-balanced machine with a powerful 2 or 4 stroke engine. The bikes have high ground clearance, min-

This brings the best kids from all over the country, 16 and under, for a three-day competition with one overall winner. Coran took the win on two days and second on another for the overall win!” said Adam. Adam is quick to express his appreciation to the sponsors that helped make Coran’s competitive participation at these events possible. “We’d like to thank Jim Fox from Fox’s Trials Barn in Montoursville for stepping up and supporting Coran this past year. He really helped us out. Coran also got support from Lewisport, USA, for the West Coast Nationals in Arizona and New Mexico. All his work paid off with a Sponsorship from Vertigo Motors USA for 2022. Fox’s Trials Barn is also helping out again. Coran will again be competing in the 2022 AMA MotoTrials Series, 2022 Youth National Championship, and the AMA District 6 Trials Series,” Adam said. It looks like young Coran has an interesting and perhaps long competitive run ahead of him for many years to come.

imal fuel capacity, and no seat, creating a highly maneuverable, very lightweight, and razor-thin motorcycle. “I was into trials riding, and Coran, just kind of gravitated towards it because kids think whatever their dad is doing, is cool. Coran started riding when he was four years old and competing when he was five years old,” Coran’s father Adam told Webb Weekly. “He regularly competes in the Pennsylvania District 6 MotoTrials Series. This series consists of several events throughout the eastern part of PA. There are several skill-level classes. Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert, and Pro. Coran won the Expert Class for 2021.” Adam said for 2021, he and Coran decided they would try their luck at some National Competitions. This would take them to four locations throughout the United States for a two-day competition at each location. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Arizona, and New Mexico. Coran competed in the Junior Expert Sportsman class. This is for competitors 18 years of age and younger. At the first event in Farrandsville, PA, Coran took the overall win for the day. He followed this up with another win in Arizona and top-three finishes at

CREATING A POSITIVE FUNERAL EXPERIENCE

T

here is a running joke with those of us who regularly attend the weekly Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting. We know it means a long meeting when we see a short agenda. We could call it the Lyco Comm Law — the shorter the agenda, the longer they talk, talk, talk about each agenda item. At the Thursday, February 10th meeting, however, the talk, talk, talk had some very valuable information. It kicked in with a simple recognition of Jill Shuman for ten years of service with the Voter Services Office. Forrest Lehman, director of the Department of Voter Services for Lycoming County, gave high praise to Jill. (Which I greatly concur with as she has helped me on a number of occasions.) But Forrest went beyond this to share with the public the battle zone that elections in our country and especially Pennsylvania now face. A little background is needed. According to our US Constitution, our country conducts a census of our population every ten years. These results then

determine the geographical designations that will become the districts that elected officials will represent. This applies to the federal government, our US House of Representatives, state government, PA State Senators, and PA State House Representatives. Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, there is a built-in flaw in this constitutional mandate. Whoever draws the map can design it to favor one political party over another. For two hundred years, whoever controlled the legislature at the time of redistricting had the flexibility to realign the new districts in a way that would favor their party. Known as ‘gerrymandering,’ named after Elbridge Gerry, one of

The second dilemma is for the PA House and Senate redesigned districts. In both cases, the committees that drew them up were rejected by Governor Wolf, which means these are now being brought before the courts to decide. After Forrest Lehman gave deserved praise to Jill Shuman, he made a “housekeeping announcement” related to the upcoming elections. Because the State Supreme Court is not conducting a hearing until February 18th, the petitions to get on the ballot that were to begin on February 15th have been postponed until further notice. Supposedly, these petitions to get on

the ballot were to be from February 15th until March 8th. It is a bit of a conundrum because without petitions to get on the ballot; there cannot be an election because there would be no one on the ballot! When this mess happened after the last redistricting, it could not be worked out in time, and the districts were not changed until the next election cycle. This may happen again, but no one knows. The US Congressional redistricting, however, must be resolved because of the loss of one congressman for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. How that will get resolved by May 17th

in time for the general primary remains to be seen. And one last thing to keep in mind this election cycle. As noted in this column a few weeks ago, there are still scammers going door-to-door pretending to be Lycoming County Voter Services employees. Apparently, they have been quite brazen in seeking to obtain personal identifying information such as your date of birth, driver’s license number, or Social Security number. Call Voter Services at (570) 327-2267 to report any suspicious encounters. Voter Services is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

the Founding Fathers and fifth vicepresident of the United States, who shamelessly ‘gerrymandered’ in his state of Massachusetts, it now describes contorting an electoral district outside traditional boundaries toward favoring one party more than another. Now, to bring us up to date, Pennsylvania is vexed in two directions on this mandatory redistricting. The first complication is that on a national level, the US House of Representatives, our population loss is causing Pennsylvania to be losing a seat. This means that our present eighteen congressional districts must be redrawn into seventeen.

puddles. Another practical boot option is square-toe boots. Whether knee-high, ankle, or cowboy, a welldefined toe poking from the hem of a flared or wide-legged jean definitely makes a statement giving off a 70’s sort of style vibe. As the weather continues to turn with May flowers poking up after April showers, give your boots a break by sporting a sneaker. White sneakers are a wardrobe essential and can be worn with any style of jeans. I prefer a chunkier soled trainer, like a classic Nike with the decorative swoop, wearing it with a relaxed fit jean, rolled a few times, striped shirt, and cardigan. And if the stripes can match the swoop color, all the better. For a more minimal take, there are the Stan Smith Adidas shoes that are all white with a thinner sole. Wear these kicks as part of a “Canadian tuxedo” outfit with faded skinnies and a chambray shirt. Another interesting shoe choice for spring are clogs. Now, I know this slip-on shoe can be controversial, looking at you Crocs; however, not

all clogs are created equal. There are your classic wooden sole clogs like those from Dr. Scholl’s. There are sling-back clogs courtesy of Anthropologie for klutzes like me. There are Birkenstock flat clogs, as well as platform heel clogs from Candie’s if you can find a vintage pair on a resale site. I like the idea of clogs as a transition shoe; they let your feet slowly come out of winter hibernation without requiring a pedicure. Plus, they look great with straight-legged, raw-hemmed jeans and a v-neck sweater. I’d also recommend your clog of choice with a denim skirt as spring rolls into summer. Hopefully, you’re planning on trying one or all of these shoe and jean pairings to help alleviate the style hibernation dull drums of winter. What’s even more exciting than footwear and denim styles is that these shoe types are extremely versatile and can be worn with a range of other items beyond jeans. The shoesibilities (that’s a mash-up of shoe and possibilities) are endless!

February 20, 1972 Near Record Snowstorm Buries Region

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

n official level of 22 inches of new snow fell on the Williamsport area this weekend and another several inches are expected. Official weather service records indicate the snowstorm is the worst since a record 23 inches fell in a 24hour period in January 1964. Heavy snow warnings are still in effect for the Lycoming and Clinton County area and serious snow drifting is expected to add to hazardous travel conditions. Drifting could cause transportation tie-ups for the next several days, but the Washington’s Birthday holiday Monday is expected to ease traffic conditions. Reacting early Saturday to the severe storm, Mayor John R. Coder declared a state of emergency. Buses were pulled off the street and citizens were advised to remain home unless in emergency situations. City police answered any

emergency calls for transportation. Tree limbs blocked walkways and portions of roadways in many parts of the city. Sporadic power failures blackened several areas. To help clear city streets all city workers recently furloughed were called back to man equipment to fight the storm. Ordinarily busy streets were transformed into white, quiet walkways shared by infrequent cars and clusters of pedestrians trying to avoid the kneedeep snow. Downtown merchants never opened up Saturday morning as the snow piled up in the early morning hours. Most streets were passable, but parking proved a problem with the deep snow lining the curbs. Snow fell throughout the state, but apparently the Williamsport-Lock Haven area took the brunt of the storm. Drifting posed no problem along the West Branch Valley floor because of a lack of winds, but in other areas the wind whipped the snow into huge piles.

FUTURE PLANS FOR THE CORNER OF MAYNARD AND RIVERSIDE DRIVE

Residents of South Williamsport and the Local Community, I have made great strides in improving the current location of @YourConvenience Store and am looking for South Williamsport Borough approval to continue with my vision of what a modern day convenience store should look like. It is my goal to renovate the historic building into something the residents of South Side can be proud of, this while adding to the tax base and increasing adjacent property value. I will be providing more detail in future weeks. Thank you! A proud South Williamsport Resident, Businessman and Taxpayer, Brad Gordner

Introducing the Crunch Cats

This group of cats was part of a hoarding situation when their caregiver passed away. A family member contacted us for help in finding them more suitable homes. The cats have always lived with many cats and are very bonded with each other. Due to this, we require them to be adopted out in pairs. e feel that a few cats would do fine by themselves, and they are marked accordingly. Each cat is older and uirky, has missing teeth, and came in with crunchy skin. Petey s the brown and black cat tongue sticks out. In fact, most of the cats tongues stick out. Pumpkin the orange and white cat has a way of looking at you that makes you think he can read your thoughts. So bring home double the love this alentine s ay and give a Crunchy Cat or two a home.

IDENTIFYING RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE EARLY CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE. Blood pressure. Cholesterol. Glucose. Weight. And family history. Artisan Hearing Technologies, LLC $5,000 HEARING AIDS FOR FREE

adding quality to life every day

“My hearing aids are over five years old, and have served me well over the years. It’s time for a new hearing aids and to my surprise my insurance covered my hearing aids in full! I received hearing aids that retail for $6000 paid in full by my insurance company. The first thing that happens when you walk in the door at Artisan Hearing Technologies, is that they check your insurance for you to see if you have a hearing aid benefit. I have always loved the service, professionalism, and staff at Artisan, however I am so excited with my new insurance! I do not have to pay one penny for my new hearing aids. From my experience it is very important that you have a hearing evaluation, and your hearing aid customized to your hearing loss by a professional. I am getting all of this for free with my insurance. Before you ever consider buying something over-the-counter, I suggest you at least have your insurance checked. And based on my experience in the past, I was very surprised at how many insurance companies are now covering hearing aids through the Medicare supplemental plans, when they did not 5 years ago. I was also very happy that Artisan Hearing is a provider for most of the insurance companies that are providing these benefits.” ~ Gerry Green

I

t was Monday morning. Plus, the day after the super bowl, and Valentine’s Day. That’s a lot right there. As I was pouring my husband his coffee and passing him his breakfast plate I said, “Oh hey! Happy Valentine’s Day babe!” He forgot as well, and we just gave each other a smooch. It was my first Monday back to work, and I was feeling pretty achy that morning. After my hubby and I wished each other a good day, I got another smooch, and out the door he went — I opened up my devotional book. I’ve been absolutely loving it. It’s called

Mornings with Jesus 2022. That was one of my new year’s resolutions was to read more, and why not do that with the Lord? I’ve been pretty faithful, but of course have some mornings that get away from me, so this particular morning I had some catching up to do. One of the days asked me to find my favorite worship song, play it, and ask Jesus to reveal his love and character to me as I worship and sing along. It’s called a Faith Step, and each day ends with one. I said, “OK Lord, instead of listening to the Bobby Bones show on my way to work, I’ll listen to Country Faith on Pandora

through my phone.” I didn’t have the time to YouTube or download my favorite song, and thought I’d worship to whatever came on. I dropped my kids off at the bus and off I headed to Jersey Shore. I turned off the radio in ole Black Betty, (our black Andrea Yukon) and turned on McElroy my phone. The first song to come on was “There was Jesus” by Dolly Parton and Zach Williams. I loved this song when it came on, and thought, “Oh perfect, Lord! Thank you.” The second song was by Hillary Scott

called “The River.” Very upbeat, and just what I needed to get out of my funk and quit feeling sorry for myself. As I was pulling off the Jersey Shore exit, about five minutes from work, I heard it. I got goosebumps. There it was. My favorite worship song of all times! “How Great Thou Art” and a beautiful rendition of it by Carrie Underwood. It was always page 34 in our hymns at church, and my cousin Lindsay Clark and I, at a very young age, loved this song so much, that when Pastor said, “Please turn your hymnals to page 34 and rise and sing,” we would find each other in the congregation, make eye contact, and thumbs up each other with excitement. HOME COOKIN knew exactly what song it was because we had the page number “34” memorized. “Dang Lord. You knew exactly what I needed!” Isn’t it amazing how that happens? As the song ended, I pulled up into the driveway to the sweetest home. “OK, time to go to work,” I thought to myself. I felt revived and ready to go after that. I slid my fat butt out of ole Black Betty and waddled up the driveway. “Ugh! Why do I feel this way!? It’s been three weeks since surgery. I am young and healthy. I should bounce back so much better than this!” (Don’t worry, I’m not

talking to myself. I’m thinking this in my noggin.) I kept my music on my phone and was greeted by one of the sweet ladies I work for. With working on my feet, I knew I wouldn’t last as long as I typically do but told myself to shoot for three hours. I just kept questioning why surgery was three weeks from that day and I still felt this way. As my music played, my thoughts pondered and remembered it was February 14, Valentine’s day. My surgery was Monday January 31 — duhhhh!! It hasn’t been three weeks, Andrea. It’s only been

two weeks today! Let me tell you though, it felt like it had been three weeks to a month. This was God’s way of reminding me that it’s all on his time. Even though we want something now, God is like, “You better check yourself, because that’s not how this works.” Just like my devotionals and a favorite worship song, God knew what that song was, and played it right when I needed it most. It wasn’t the first song, nor was it the second. It was the very last song, right before getting to work and doubting myself if I could even get through the morning. With His strength I was able, and man did it feel good to get out and feel some kind of normalcy. We make plans and God laughs. I made plans to be back to work after the first week. He must have gotten a real good chuckle out of that. But let me say, this book has gotten me through just when I needed it most. On the morning of February 9, I was feeling rough. I was feeling irritated. I was feeling bummed. It was nine days after surgery, and I still couldn’t even workout, which is a tough pill for me to swallow. I felt like it was such a setback for me and just mad at the situation. Plus, knowing I have to go through this all over again on my other leg wasn’t making things better. I opened up my book, and that morning was about a woman who had surgery and felt discouraged as I did. Months after surgery she still felt pain and felt she was slow to recede. It explained that a tornado sweeps through a town. Buildings can be

prepared, but the emotional wounds of the people may be more difficult to assess and may take longer to heal. She used this to trust God to heal her and keep the muscles around her relationship and emotional wounds strong, so she could prosper in all ways. I love how God uses everyday experiences like these to communicate truth that he needs me to understand. If you talk to God, and fully trust in him, I promise he pulls through. It may not be on our time, but it’s just when we need it most. Buttered Parsley & Parmesan Red Potatoes Ingredients: • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds small red potatoes • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 tablespoons butter, cut into slices • 1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley Directions: Add the potatoes to a medium saucepan and cover with cold water by 2 inches. Bring to a boil and add 1 teaspoon of kosher salt. Reduce to a rolling simmer and cook until the potatoes are fork tender and the skin is beginning to fall away from the potatoes, about 20 minutes. Drain the water from the pan. Quickly add the potatoes back to the saucepan with the butter and parsley, and season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Give the potatoes a vigorous stir with a wooden spoon or shake with the lid on so the potatoes break up a bit. Let sit on the still warm (but off ) burner for 5-10 minutes and serve.

There’s a Storm A-comin’ By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz

“T

here’s a snowstorm coming!” or “There’s a snowstorm a-comin!” What’s the difference? At least 8 inches. You can typically determine the intensity of a snowstorm if the term “a-comin” is used. Nature provides us with numerous signs on upcoming weather conditions if we know what to look for or interpret. If cows are laying down, that’s a sign rain is on its way. If its windy and trees are showing the backside of their leaves, that’s another sign rain is on the horizon. The markings on a wooly worm indicate a mild or snowy winter. And using a-comin’ to describe a storm that means the storm is going to be a doozy. You wouldn’t say “A snowstorms a-comin” for an inch or two of snow. “A-comin” means major, big and intense. It means get your butt moving or your butt is going to get walloped by said storm. It’s a signal to close schools, shut

down factories and stores. Get the shovels and salt ready. Inside, stock up on batteries, candles, cheap wine, blankets, Oreos, Doritos, flashlights, more cheap wine, matches and toilet paper. I have a theory about a-comin’ and the people that say it or run around in a frenzy getting overly prepared. The a-comin’ crowd share a secret fantasy. They want to be a pioneer of yesteryear heading west and the untamed wilds. They want to be out on the open prairie in one of those fly-over states with their covered wagons, campfire, and rabbit stew. And they need to be prepared and be ready to battle with Mother Nature. Once the storm has swept into the area and the snow is starting to pile up, the person that gave warning about the storm switches gears and starts giving weather updates for the area and, for some unknown reason, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Ohio and Canada. “Its 26 outside, 27 in State College. As if all that wasn’t enough, there’s also the tales of doom and woe waiting to happen. “The pine tree planted in 1936 is going to get weighed down with snow and will crash through the roof and we’ll freeze.” Or, “It will take a month full of Sundays until we’ll be able to get the car out of the driveway because the ice is that bad.” The snow and ice won’t last forever and soon it will be spring. Come springtime, you won’t be hearing, “There’s a snowstorm a-comin’!’’ instead you’ll be hearing “There’s a rainstorm a-comin’!”

it’s a chilly 22.” Twenty minutes later it’s the snow accumulations. Next there’s a blizzard horror story about someone they worked with, went to school with or knows them from the grocery store. “That Joe guy I know, he went out to clear the sidewalk and was wearing shoes with no socks and he ended up with bad frostbite and lost seven toes.” I don’t mean to be rude, but I really couldn’t care less if Dubois was getting pounded by snow or your great uncle Carl ended up with frostbite on his butt and his wife Lulu had to put ointment on it five times a day.

jor organs and energy. They can adjust how glucose enters the bloodstream to provide energy and can change chemicals that affect the immune system. This occasional stress isn’t particularly harmful, as stress is simply part of being human; however, chronic over-stress can have very serious consequences. People that are subjected to regular physical and psychological abuse gradually decline and become ill. If our body’s resources are continually depleted through illness and stress hormone surges, our brains are unable to recover and become more susceptible to the negative effects of stress. The bottom line is that humans are social, and we need each other. Our daily experiences and interactions have a profound effect on our minds and bodies. When we surround ourselves with positive people and experiences, we thrive. Conversely, when we surround ourselves with negative people, our brains and bodies are under a constant state of stress that literally eats away at us from the inside out, sometimes even leading to premature death. So, choose your friends wisely because, for better or for worse, they have a greater influence over you than you may realize. example, all of us at one time or another have felt comfort from a hug. This level of social connection has its advantages. Studies have shown that people are much more likely to overcome serious illness if they are surrounded and supported by friends, family, and even loving pets. In addition, the people with the greatest longevity almost always have very close connections with other people. Research has even shown that people with caring and responsive partners even seem to get sick less often. Conversely, people who lack meaningful connections can decline and die prematurely from loneliness. Another downside to this innate connection is that we can pick up on the negative emotions of others. Humans actually regulate each other with words and actions. Just as a kind word can make you feel better, cruel words can cause your brain to anticipate a threat and initiate the body’s stress response. This response can, in turn, flood the body with stress hormones, thus depleting finite resources. A simple aggressive phrase in a conversation can actually affect your heart rate, breathing, and metabolism. Barrett writes that the words we encounter have such intense effects on the human body because the brain regions that process language also control our physiological systems, including ma-

The Backyard Gardner…

Seed Soil

I

thought I would go over seed starting mix since this will give you time to decide if you want to purchase your seed starting soil or make your own. I have personally used both. Most garden stores will carry small bags for the gardeners wanting to start just a few seeds. For gardeners planning on starting multiple plants, it may

be cost-effective to make your own mix. Making your own seed soil mix is very simple and can sometimes be of better quality than what can be purchased at stores. The three ingredients needed can be found at just about any garden center: Charlie compost, peat moss, and perlite Gizenski with a mixture rate of 1:1:1 of each ingredient.

Once you have the three ingredients, it’s time to mix them. How I mix is what I call the three-gallon mix. I add one gallon of compost, one gallon of peat moss, and one gallon of perlite. This allows me to work in smaller, more precise amounts without mixing up too much and having to store it. Before mixing the ingredients, I screen the compost and the peat moss. I do this by putting it into a screen sifter that has 1/4-inch square holes that allow the compost and peat moss to pass through, but not sticks, stones, and other debris

Compost can be either farmyard compost, mushroom compost, or seaweed compost. I personally use farmyard compost since this is something that is readily available to me at any time. Compost is needed to release nutrients into the soil mix slowly. Peatmoss can be just about any brand you like. I personally use Promix. I find fewer sticks, tree bark, and other unwanted matter in this brand. Perlite is the third ingredient. Perlite is a white expanded rock that has tiny cracks and pores in it, almost resembling popcorn. Perlite helps with aeration and to prevent over-watering and root rot.

soil. Your soil should have enough water added to make it dark in color and look like cake batter. If you would pick up a handful of soil, you should be able to squeeze a small amount of water out of it. This would be the perfect water to soil ratio. I would also recommend using water that is room temp because the soil temp needs to be between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit for seeds to germinate. If you were to use cold tap water, it would take longer to get the temp of the soil up for the seeds to germinate.

that may be in the compost or peat moss. I also do this with the peat moss because peat moss can become very clumpy. This will break all the big pieces into workable material. Once I have all three ingredients mixed, I use a small garden fork to mix the ingredients up. I find that this tool works well for mixing the ingredients without much work. One ingredient is Azomite, which is a rock dust from volcanic ash. It is said to give the young seedlings essential elements of minerals to give seedlings better growth. The other ingredient is worm tea. Worm tea is made by adding worm castings and molasses. This should be made 24 hours before you plan to use it. The reason is that the worm castings and molasses need time to ferment, making a liquid high in nitrogen. The only thing to remember is that using worm tea is to be sure to dilute it before using. It is recommended one ounce per gallon of water.

41 • Webb Weekly February 23, 2022

One other ingredient I put into my water when wetting the soil is Superthrive, which is an organic plant food with fish emulsion. I started using this last year and found my plants seem to germinate faster. I also had fewer problems with disease found in young seedlings. I must warn you, though — this product does have a strong odor. If you plan on starting your seeds in a room in your home, you might find that the smell might be a bit much. In my case, I start my seedlings in my garden shed now, so no one must smell this but me. I do have some garden friends that include a few other ingredients.

s the month of February is drawing to an end, the time is right to be taking to the woods in search of shed antlers. There have been many reports of finding sheds and seeing bucks that have shed their antlers. If you have never looked for them before, you may well be in for a real treat. Finding sheds is a true bonus to a winter hike, and when you do come across one or two, it is a great reminder that some bucks in your area have made it through the hunting seasons and the tougher part of the winter. Last year saw some unusually deep snowfalls, but this year we were laced with day after day of ice — creating frozen layers that made it difficult for most wildlife to access the feed below. With that in mind, here are a few pointers as to where to look: Take the easy path first. From black bears to deer to humans — we all

prefer the easy path to travel; thus, old logging roads are a great place to begin your travels. If you come across a well-traveled deer path, take it — especially if it leads to a bedding area or feeding area. If a deer trail leads to a fence or ditch that they must jump to continue travel, pay close attention to both sides of the obstacle. Jumping the fence or ditch might just provide the jarring impact that will loosen one or both of their antlers. Think small. Don’t be focusing only on a shed from a giant 12-pointer. Even when you might come across a larger shed, only a small portion of it may be visible — often only the tip of one of the tines. When you find a shed, slow down and rescan the area. Often the other side of that buck’s antlers may be close by. On numerous occasions, when you find a shed, there very well may be several others in the area. Pay particular attention to the

Some folks enjoy slowly filling a basket full of sheds and sitting it in a visible spot in their “man cave.” Depending on the size and shape of the sheds, you find they can be used for handles for tools or knives. Often, they can be fastened together in such a fashion to make desk lamps, floor lamps, and even hanging chandeliers. They are used at times as door or drawer handles or pulls. In the end, taking time to hike throughout your favorite hunting grounds in search of shed antlers is just another great excuse to get outdoors, especially after being holed up in these winter months. You may discover some new bedding areas or travel routes for the whitetail deer that frequent your area and get some great cardiovascular exercise along the way. As an added bonus, make sure you are carrying your favorite “coyote tamer” because this is the mating season for coyotes. They are out traveling of a mate, and “Love in allsearch the attention they are also more visible during the and loveare I searching daytime hours as they for hard-to-find winter get food. southern-facing hillsides. Deer enjoy the warmth of the sunshine on the southern sides of the mountains and hills, and the melting of the snow and ice by the sun makes the underlying food more quickly available there as well. Don’t hesitate to retrace your steps as you are returning from your hike. When you do so, you will be looking along the pathway from a completely different angle and, no doubt, under different lighting conditions, which might make a small part of a shed antler more visible than before. If your travels lead you to a stand of oak trees or a cut cornfield, slow your search since deer will tend to hang out in these feeding areas. Make sure you bring your binoculars. You should always have them with you any time you are in the woods, but they can help cover much more territory than just scanning with the naked eye. Scanning a nearby hillside slowly with binoculars will enable you to see sheds hundreds of yards away. Okay, great, you found some shed antlers — now what?

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Animal Oddities

A

s a wildlife artist and an avid outdoorsman, I am obviously very intrigued by wildlife, especially when something new or unusual shows up. I recently read in an outdoor publication about a woman who had taken an unusual buck with a crossbow. The deer had an 18-point rack, but when her husband started to field-dress the deer, he noticed something unusual — it appeared to be a doe and not a buck. They contacted the Pennsylvania Game Commission, and after the mandatory drying period, the rack was officially

measured. The deer made it into the Big Game Records book in the nontypical archery category. Antlered does do occasionally show up, but usually, they will sport relatively small spikes often covered in velvet and certainly not like the 18-pointer in the previous paragraph. According to the biologists, these small antlered does are a result of a testosterone surge, but it’s seldom high enough to produce larger hardened antlers. These does are actually able to produce fawns. Now here’s where it gets interesting; the rare adult females with hardened antlers

are actually males possessing female external genitalia. Male parts might be present but not visible, and it’s unlikely such a deer could produce fawns. Likely the deer mentioned at the beginning Ken of this piece was Hunter not a true female, according to the biologists. Hey, I’m just passing on the info I was able to dig up on this unusual situation. Some other oddities occur in deer,

which I’m sure some of us may have spotted on more than one occasion. I’m talking here about a piebald deer which is the result of a genetic abnormality that results in varying amounts of white showing up. Both the male and the female must carry the recessive gene to produce a piebald. Over the years, I have actually observed piebalds in several locations, including one near my residence many years ago. It’s believed that only about two percent of the deer population will ever show up as piebalds. Other than the varying amounts of white hair, most of the time, they are normal, but in some cases, shortened legs, misaligned spines, and other mutations can show up.

addition, the two recessive genes must be present. Another characteristic that can occur in deer and other animals is the opposite of the piebald known as a melanistic deer. In a melanistic deer, more pigment is present, causing the animal to appear darker; this condition is even rarer than albinism. By the way, while talking about animal oddities, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention bearded hen turkeys. This is a condition that is actually more common, and a number of hunters have actually taken bearded hens in mistake for gobblers. It is believed that about ten percent of all hen turkeys may sport a six to eight-inch or smaller beard.

Piebalds are sometimes mistaken for deer with albinism. Still, true albinism is different in that there is a total lack of body pigment resulting in pink eyes due to the blood vessels behind the lenses showing up through the unpigmented irises. Albinism is a recessive trait, and the buck and the doe must carry the gene before it can be passed on to the offspring, and even then, there is only a one in four chance of an albino fawn. It’s estimated that only one deer in thirtythousand will show up as an albino. Probably one of the biggest reasons that we don’t see many piebalds and albinos is because the white makes the deer stand out in most situations, making them more vulnerable to predators. In

SPENCE TAG RADIO was well before its time, and this weekly part-time gig had listeners from all over the globe. Now, this is just an opinion, but I truly believe that we had the very first PODCAST. We were hilarious as both of us love to banter and chat. Our chemistry was fantastic, and it was a great show.

We sometimes invited guests, but it was mostly a conversation between old hoops friends. Coach Tagliaferri definitely has the gift of gab. The program was based around sports, but we would occasionally discuss trends and current events. We refrained from politics because our opinions often made our listeners mad. Basketball dominated mostly. Tag didn’t like to talk about soccer. One of my personal favorites was when we reached out to the audience in naming the greatest sports movies of all time. That show aired ten years ago, and my
