Ukrainian Donations, St. Paddy’s Day Celebration, and Home Improvement Anticipation

appy Saint Patrick’s Day, and good luck to all on planning whatever home improvement is needed. Before I get to both of those topics, I have a little more serious issue to talk about. I am always amazed how the people of the West Branch Valley come together during a crisis, whether it’s here at home or halfway around the globe. This has been on full display recently in support of the Ukrainian people. Several folks have contacted me about helping those in Ukraine and the estimated 2.5 million individuals that had to leave their homeland. I have encouraged all to make sure they’re working through a legitimate source regarding whatever they donate. There are no people in the world more generous than those from the United States of America, and whatever the crisis, Pennsylvanians seem to lead the way. Unfortunately, today’s scam artists often target tragedy. So, at this point, I feel the best thing I can do is share with you the words from Pennsylvania’s top prosecutor, Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “So, as

we applaud Pennsylvania for wanting to help, we want to encourage them to make a charitable donation and have it go to actual charities so they don’t get scammed.” AG Shapiro follows this up with, “Don’t respond to unsolicited calls. You seek out the charity and take the initiative to ask them, the charity, how your money is going to be used. Any legitimate charity should be able to answer that for you.” This is well said by AG Shapiro and can be applied to any unsolicited call or people that you don’t know approaching you randomly for charitable donations. Moving right along to the luck of the Irish and Saint Patrick’s Day — Spring has sprung across the West Branch Valley. We all understand that snow is very probable; however, it can’t last for long. And as long as that thermometer reads above 50 and the sun’s out, it feels like a summer day. Saint Patrick’s Day provides an opportunity for us to all be Irish for a day and come together and enjoy Irish traditions. Officially it began as a celebration of Christianity coming to

Ireland and became an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century. It has grown into a religious and cultural holiday celebrated around the world. Locally it’s a time for parades, celebration, and Jim Webb, Jr. some great Irish cuisine with the adult beverage of your choice. It always brings a smile to my face to make the trip across the bridge and meet with Mr. Bobby Griffin and Peggy Leta at the Shamrock and prepare his Saint Patrick’s Day ad. I always enjoy the conversation, and this is a true sign that we’ve made it through February and great weather days are ahead. I also especially enjoy their clam chowder. Along with all the birds I see migrating back to our area, another true harbinger of Spring is our Webb Weekly Spring Home Improvement Guide. Which just happens to coincide this year with Saint Patrick’s Day. All of us at Webb Weekly take great pride in providing the special insert to the paper. It’s a great how-to guide of contractors, services, and products for the do-it-yourselfer. We appreciate all those featured within our Spring and Fall Home Improvement sections and the difficult job they have each and every day. It goes without saying with the increasing cost and post-pandemic

supply chain issues; things have gotten even tougher this year. Please, whenever possible, use the services and buy products from local businesses. This only strengthens our local economy. Please also understand and be patient during current times that it may take a little longer to get the products needed for your home improvement project. The same can be said about those providing a contracting service for you. They are obviously facing the same product availability issue, coupled with the fact we flat out need more workers within the vocational trades. Earlier in my column, there were ways discussed to make sure you’re not getting scammed when it comes to charitable donations. The same advice can be applied to whatever purchase you’re making around your home. You should be the one seeking out the services or product. Be careful when someone just walks down your driveway with something to sell you or calls you on the phone with a great new plan to heat or power your home. The best way to prevent a home makeover nightmare is to do your homework. As the outdoor activities are on the increase and more folks are out and about, let’s all be careful out there. Please, if you have a little too much St. Paddy’s Day celebrating, don’t drink and drive. God Bless America.

Fun Ways for Children to Participate in St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

F

ull disclosure, I am not Irish. Not even a little bit. I have a 23andMe report to confirm it. But everyone loves to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day! Plus, my mom still insists on pinching people for not wearing green, despite the fact that she is also, not even a little bit Irish. So I’ll wear my green, and if I can find green beer, enjoy a pint (or maybe just some Irish Whisky instead), and enjoy the holiday! St. Patrick’s Day commemorates its namesake, the patron saint of Ireland who helped spread Christianity across this island nation. While it may have begun as a religious holiday, eventually the fanfare expanded to transform St. Patrick’s Day into a secular celebration spanning the world. In fact, some of the largest St. Patrick’s Day events occur outside of Ireland. While St. Patrick’s Day tends to cater to the over-21 crowd that doesn’t meant there isn’t fun to be had with the littles too! So whether you haven’t a single drop of Irish blood, or if you are so Irish you bleed green, grab the kids and have some fun with these St. Paddy’s Day crafts! If you are feeling frisky, pour up some Leprechaun Punch to enjoy while you craft — just combine lemon-lime soda, green food coloring and

Filmed in gorgeous black-and-white (and really deserving an eighth Oscar nod for cinematography), this is Sir Ken’s tender tribute to his childhood in Ireland during “the Troubles” of the late 1960s. Beautifully acted all around, “Belfast” has something for everyone: comedy, action, history, nostalgia, coming-of-age, hopeful message, romance young and old — plus a knock-out soundtrack of songs and sax solos by the legendary Van Morrison. Like so many other titles on this list, “Belfast” is a testament to the power of Irish heritage, even for those who emigrated elsewhere. As one character puts it, “The Irish were born to leave; otherwise, the rest of the world would have no pubs.” I’ll drink to that.

Despite its inauspicious inception, Sing Street soon starts churning out one sensational tune after another, not only winning the girl but also forging unlikely alliances across the treacherous social milieu of 1980s adolescence. and Rick Mirabito proposed an ordinance for a $5 fee on every non-exempt vehicle registered in the county. This would then be leveraged into a bond to be used to repair structurally deficient bridges in nineteen different municipalities in Lycoming County. This was critically important as even repairing a small bridge cost upwards of $100,000 or more in necessary permits, studies, engineer designs, actual constructions, inspections, etc., which is a budget buster for almost all townships and boroughs as well as the city of Williamsport. It was an inspired idea, but not to the average citizen. The backlash was astounding. At that June 2017 meeting, there were many who came to voice their opposition. Tony Mussare noted that he had personally

served as a township supervisor for ten years and have been asked from time to time if I was interested in running for Lycoming County Commissioner someday. I quickly answer — “No!” Having been an active spectator since 2014, I greatly understand the demands and difficulties that the board of three commissioners must face in an organization that employs over 500 people and has a budget of 100 million dollars. Not only this, but the area of responsibility covers 1,244 square miles, the largest county in land area in Pennsylvania, inhabited by 52 municipalities; a city, nine boroughs, and 42 townships, wrapped around a river, eight major creeks, and vast amounts of woodlands. There are countless priorities such as economic development, housing, transportation, public safety, social welfare, environmental concerns, and much more that must continually be considered and balanced. At times, navigating through this with very limited revenue requires the county commissioners to make very difficult decisions that are also quite unpopular. This was the case at the commissioners’ meeting on Thursday, June 15, 2017. Commissioners Jack McKernan, Tony Mussare,

History and family traditions matter and these details can be incorporated as part of a loved one’s final farewell. Sharing family traditions such as the Irish Blessing are an important way to establish lasting bonds and create a sense of belonging. Traditional services are fitting and appropriate for some and for others a more modern and unique type of remembrance gathering that perhaps involves a pot of gold may work better for them. received 33 phone calls urging him not to pass the ordinance. Surprisingly, even at the Lycoming County Association of Township Officials meeting three weeks before, there was a heated discussion with the commissioners about this proposal. Those at the meeting even took a vote on the issue simply to express their sentiments, which barely passed. The deliberation on that June 15, 2017, commissioners’ meeting went on for an hour. Yet when all the dust settled, the commissioners hung in there and voted unanimously to pass Lycoming County Ordinance 2017-02 for the $5 fee added on to car registrations. Now, fast forward to the County Commissioners Meeting on Thursday, March 3, 2022, where Austin Daley from the Lycoming County Planning Department made a project update on the first phase of the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program. He gave an outstanding overview of the progress being made in the repair of some seventeen locally owned bridges that are being funded through the $7 million PennDOT PIB loan, which is being paid for by Act 13 funds and that $5 local vehicle registration fee. The multiple bridge repairs were ‘bundled’ to save in costs, and this idea was birthed right here in Lycoming County. The concept is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, and even though it is a pioneer program, it is already one year ahead of schedule. The

result of this initiative will not just result in keeping these bridges in good condition and thus keep these roads open, but also save millions of dollars in costs to these townships in later years as well as savings in taxes to these residents. And it would have never happened if those three commissioners had not had the courage to stand up to the masses that wanted to keep that $5 in their pocket no matter what. Since that time, Commissioner Scott Metzger has replaced Jack McKernan, but there was no change in focus. If anything, Scott Metzger has pushed it along even more as an enthusiastic supporter of the initiative. The military has many ways to recognize outstanding service, and it seems to me that those in local government should be acknowledged as well. So, it is my privilege to present the first Webb Weekly County Hall Corner Distinguished Service Award for “exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility” to Commissioners Jack McKernan, Tony Mussare, and Rick Mirabito for the inauguration of this historically significant project. Commissioner Scott Metzger also deserves an Outstanding Service Award for his leadership in shepherding this critically important agenda forward. To many, this may not seem like such a big deal, but other government entities around the Commonwealth are watching this program develop. It is leadership with a capital L.

T

he better half of my sophomore year was spent being the vice president of South Williamsport MiniTHON club and working alongside our president, Gianna Godfrey, along with Michael Rodgers and Michael Allison, our club advisors, and a team of great students who made this year’s MiniTHON possible. Our Mini-THON tradition was broken in 2021 due to COVID-19, but this year, we came back better than ever in the fight against pediatric cancer. If you didn’t know, our Mini-THON comes from Penn State’s THON that lasts 46 straight hours. During the 46-hour marathon, they have guest speakers, performances on stage, music, and much more. During South Williamsport’s 12-hour version of THON that lasts from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., we have bounce houses, volleyball, four-square, a mural to paint, a gaming station, dancing hours, hair donations, and a couple of honorary moments for people within our community who have had experiences with cancer. All the funds raised within THON

events go to the Four Diamonds organization that provides support for families that have a kid who has childhood cancer. Four Diamonds pays for treatment, housing, and any other necessary bills that a family may need help with during this hard time. It’s wholesome to see our small community and school come together to raise a significant amount of money for this cause. This year’s Mini-THON broke the South Williamsport record. We raised a new record of $31,296.58. Let me tell you how we did it! It starts at the beginning of the school year. We ‘canned’ for donations at each football game. We, as a club, also ran one of the concession stands and kept the profit of what it made. The next step was the fall fundraiser, which was a sandwich and pizza sale this year. The profit of the sales were once again kept and added into our final total. A big contribution to our amount raised was business donations! If a business donates a certain amount, they can land a spot on the back of our annual t-shirt that almost every student attending gets to wear the night of Mini-THON.

MINI-THON

Call 570-326-9322

Whether or not they make it onto the back of our t-shirt, all donations are helpful and appreciated! A newer addition to the process of raising money would be our TinyTHON that we host annually as well. Tiny-THON is a fundraiser that includes the elementary-aged kids from 3rd grade to 6th grade. Since they can’t stay too long at our big event, Tiny-THON was created a few years back to raise additional money and incorporate younger children in the fight against pediatric cancer. The kids have loved the event, and they are welcome to join us during the Community Hours at Mini-THON as well. The biggest step to our fundraising is getting kids in the high school (7th-12th grade) to register for MiniTHON! A registration packet and sixty dollars are needed to be turned in by a specific date to guarantee each student a t-shirt and access to the overnight experience that Mini-THON offers. An easy way for students to raise their money would be to use DonorDrive. DonorDrive is a website created by Four Diamonds to collect money in one spot. It is super easy to make an account and even easier to donate.

The last opportunity for us to raise money would be accepting donations at the door and selling raffle tickets during our Community Hours. After Community Hours end, we total up all of the money we raised before the morning and reveal it to all the students who end up staying overnight, with a suspenseful countdown at 7 a.m While we have a few expectations of students and guests during MiniTHON, our most valued one would be for everyone to stand the whole night. We dance for those are unable, due to their illness. Whether you are playing board games, video games, foursquare — if you are dancing or using the bungee run — we don’t want to see anyone sitting. There is a lot of work behind the scenes of Mini-THON, but we, as a club, are so thankful for everyone that participated and helped us go above and beyond our goal this year. Even though the hard work has just ended, I’m already looking forward to Mini-THON 2023 to hopefully see South Side beat our record once again. I’m grateful to be associated with so many selfless people through this club, and I hope our small community has helped make a difference!

He didn’t ask to trap or acof Jesus. See Matthew 27. During the season of Lent, we remember. Read John 3 for the record of the contends to corrupt. It is a vulnerability com- versation between Jesus and Nicodemus. We thank God for Nicodemus. Were it not mon to all of us, and the Sanhedrin had its fair share of corrupted members. Jesus called for his questions; we would not have this them out, beginning with the Sermon on the new-wine truth from Jesus: “For God so loved the world that he gave his Mount and culminating in His outright condemnation in Matthew 23. Nicodemus, thank you for simply asking questions. we have done any better? My friend, what are you seeking? What is Jesus began teaching new truth. He called it “new wine” and identified the need for most important to you? It’s probably not the “new wineskins” that could stretch to contain gaining and preserving of power. Power may it. See Matthew 9:16. The Sanhedrin rightly be important to some, but for us average joes, identified that this new wine would result in we just want comfort. orthodoxy. Even legalism can be comfortable. It’s one of those “better the devil you know” comforts. We build settled lives around our comforts, and then we resist anything that would introduce change and risk bursting our old wineskins. That’s the trouble with new wine—it just doesn’t fit into our tried, true and comfy wineskins. New wine does more than stretch our skins; it risks catastrophic failure. It’s just too new, too loud, too risky, too sweet, too fun, too gracious, too liberal. New wine forces us to break out of our comfortable thought processes and routines. It changes things – and we all love change, right? The only way to find truth is to seek it by asking questions. Asking truth-seeking questions is how we keep our wineskins soft and pliable and able to expand with new wine. Doing so requires a willingness to crucify our selfish desires for power and comfort. My friend, to the human heart, truth is always new wine. What do you really want – truth or comfort? It reminds me of the well-worn story of Socrates and the seeker who claimed he wanted knowledge. Socrates took him to the sea and held his head underwater for quite some time. Letting him up for air, Socrates asked, “What do you want?” The seeker replied, “Knowledge!” Socrates gave him another long dunk—and the seeker gave the same response. Socrates then held the seeker’s head underwater until he thrashed violently in a struggle for survival. Letting him up, Socrates again asked, “What do you want?” The gasp-

ing seeker blurted out, “Air! I want air!” Socrates replied, “When you want knowledge as badly as you want air, you shall have it.” So, let me ask you again, what do you really want? If you really want truth, and I mean REALLY want it like air itself, then you better make sure you are a new wineskin. The new wine of truth will always stretch us beyond our comforts, traditions, dogmas, preferences, conveniences, rituals, legalisms, and habits. Are you willing? Be honest with yourself. If you’re not willing, then don’t be surprised when the intoxicating joy of new wine passes you by. Listen closely; those who reject new wine miss out on vast and boundless miracles of grace. New wine requires a willingness to get out of the boat and walk on the water. God is always doing something new. His compassions never fail; they are new every morning. See Lamentations 3:22-23. In Isaiah 43:18-20, God declares, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Jesus encourages all of us to ask truth-seeking questions, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7 Life is too short to let new wine pass you by. Ask questions. Crucify your comforts. Be a seeker of truth.

It was the items to the cashier if you decide you late morning when I went, and I just took don’t want it instead of being a jackwad my merry old time walking around seeing and letting the food go bad!? what new goodies I could find. I noticed I am gonna stop here for a minute. it was getting pretty busy, and by the time Come on, people. Don’t be that person. I went to check out, the lines were crazy! Seriously. If you’re gonna be lazy about At this point, it was lunchtime, so people not taking it back to where you got it were stopping in on lunch breaks, I’m sure. from, at least be considerate and give I was in no hurry and was OK to stand in it to a cashier, or you know what? It’s so easy to hand it to a clerk or employee. And the good Lord gave us two legs for a reason, so you could walk it back from where ya got it! OK, I’ve said my piece. Back to the busy lines at Wegmans... This sweet lady in front of me began to chat with me as she was putting her groceries on the belt. She said how she lived over in Loganton, and they were starting to lay salt down for a storm that was coming. I told her we love to ride our Harleys over there and wave to all the Amish kids. They are so cute when they see motorcycles! It’s beautiful over the mountain, and I also love to shop at Scenic Ridge Foods and Nan’s Donuts are amazing. We talked a bit more, and the Webb Weekly came up. I asked her if she reads the Webb. She said she did, so I told her I was Andrea from Andrea’s Country Home Cookin. Oh my goodness, at this moment, I felt like a celebrity! She came across the carts and gave me the biggest hug, and said she couldn’t believe it was me. Prep and cut all of your veggies. Sauté all the veggies but the onions in a large pan on medium heat in the oil. *Add onions and garlic after a few minutes of cooking.* While veggies cook, slice Turkey sausage into bite-size chunks. odels representing foreign countries and various parts of the United States have arrived in this city and are and have been displayed in one of the display window at Brozman’s Women’s Shop on Pine Street, to help tell the story, “The Evolution of the Nurse’s Uniform.” The pert, little doll nurses dressed in their quaint uniforms of centuries ago, are attracting a great deal of attention. There are 10 models. Probably the one exciting the most comment is the Chinese nurse, whose costume is so entirely different than any ever seen in this country. Her associates, a Norwegian Red Cross nurse, a Blue Cross nurse from Naples, a Cuban

trained nurse, and one representing the Hospital de Beaulieu illustrate the capes, flowing headdresses, pleated aprons, and long “street sweeping” uniforms of long ago. An interesting model is the “Henry Street Nurse,” a reproduction of the famous French painting presented by the French government to the Henry Street settlement. The model is typical of the little women who worked in the settlement district, in honor of whom the portrait was painted. The uniforms of past ages which the dolls model are in contrast to the neat regulation uniforms which are on display for selection by the modern nurse. Beside these elaborate uniforms the 1931 nurse’s uniform is trim and smart because of its simplicity. In uniforms as well as other articles of clothing there are fashions.

and then color with lilac, pink, or blue shades. If these pandemic years have taught us anything about hair trends, it is that a head full of purple hair is certainly a conversation starter on Zoom. For a more conventional take on blond ambition, try easing into full blond with face-framing highlights. As the season progresses, you can customize your highlights as well as continue to lighten your natural hair overall into a sun-kissed blond shade. If you’re stuck between brown and blond and not sure on which side of the shade aisle you wish to sit, then consider “bronde,” aka brown-blond hair. Think of it like a deep warm golden hue through a few soft, natural-looking highlights and lowlights to brighten your color. However, if you’re ready for full-on blond, go with a buttery blond for spring. Icy-blond hues feel too wintry; with a warmer buttery shade, your color will look more natural. With all blonds, upkeep is key, so make sure to use conditioning treatments to hydrate and strengthen. Don’t feel like bleaching your whole head? Try lightening your look by

adding some highlighted accents throughout your darker hues. Choose highlights only a few shades lighter than — and in the same color family as — your base. Add some subtle brightened strips around your face and toward the ends of your hair to play up your natural texture. If you’re not overly concerned with a natural look, then try out muted caramel hair color. This warm brunette shade looks good all year long, but a few caramel highlights will take a standard brunette into springtime. Speaking of warmth, for a tad darker and richer than traditional honey blondes, a dark honey color is a new way to transition into a warmer color for spring. If you’re not looking so much to lighten up for spring, chocolate brown hair color can be just as vibrant as golden tones, especially with slightly darker ends and plenty of shine. Spring brings with it a foray back into the world of color, so whether a natural redhead, blond, brunette, or somewhere between, consider the changing season as a chance to revive and refresh your color with some of these trending looks.

got caught up in your favorite tv show, everyone needs to get a good night’s sleep. Just as you did with your work schedule, set a sleep schedule. I think we can all agree that we are much more productive when we are well-rested. Not only will you make fewer work mistakes, but you will be better able to combat stress, think more clearly, and be happier in general. Practice good sleep hygiene by getting to bed at a decent hour and turning off electronics an hour or two before bed. Use heavy curtains to keep out unwanted, early-morning sunlight. Use earplugs to block out noise if necessary and turn down the thermostat a bit, as a cooler environment can improve sleep quality. 4.) Create a morning routine. Sure, at first, it was fun to wear sweatpants and not shower,

2.) Set a schedule. Contrary to what some people might believe, the majority of people that transitioned from working in an office to working from home actually work more, and often irregular, hours. This increase in work hours can be due either to the employee or their co-workers, or both. Having access to work materials may lead to self-imposed feelings of guilt and unavoidable thoughts about the work that you want to get done. This is further complicated by being constantly connected with email and work accounts that can be accessed with your smartphone. If your job allows, set a very clear and consistent work schedule. Let your co-workers know that you will stop checking email and will be unavailable at a designated hour. 3.) Get a good night’s sleep. Whether it’s actual work, work-related stress, or you simply

but after a while, we started to feel as unproductive as we looked. Instead of looking and smelling like dirty laundry, create a daily routine. Get up at the same time every day. Make coffee and get something to eat. Shower, shave and brush your teeth. Then get dressed. No, you don’t need to wear a suit or a dress, but for the sake of your friends, family, and sanity, ditch the workout clothes and put on something semi-professional. If you look like a pro, you eventually feel like a pro! 5.) Build in breaks. Build breaks into your day. Get up, stretch, walk around. At lunch, go for a walk or grab a workout. Try to do something different for a few minutes every hour, and be sure to take a couple of breaks at least

15-30 minutes long. Your body and mind will thank you. Let’s face it, work is important. Most of us get paid to do a job. If we’re lucky, we might even like some or all of it. Still, it’s important to separate work from the rest of our lives. When working at home, this separation can be difficult to attain. For physical and mental health, it’s necessary to set clear boundaries for both your workspace and your work schedule. When it’s time to work, work. When it’s time to be done for the day, be done. t. Patrick’s Day is a festive occasion marked by parades, live music and, of course, the color green. Many people look forward to Paddy’s Day. That anticipation makes hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party a big responsibility. In recognition of that, the following are some must-haves that hosts won’t want to forget this St. Patrick’s Day. Food When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a preparade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests. Music Music contributes greatly to the festive atmosphere on St. Patrick’s Day. If there are any musicians in your social circle, and particularly any fiddlers or pipers, enlist their services for the party. If live music isn’t possible, arrange a playlist featuring some of the Emerald Isle’s most popular

performers, including The Dubliners, The Pogues, The Chieftains, and Christy Moore, among many others. Beer For many revelers, St. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be the same without Guinness, which is among Ireland’s most famous exports. This world renowned and easily recognizable Irish dry stout traces its origins to 1758, when Arthur Guinness began creating it at his brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. The black beer and its familiar white head instantly evoke images of Ireland for millions of people across the globe. While hosts outside of Ireland might not be able to find a keg of the black stuff for their Paddy’s Day party, it is widely available in cans. Fun Part of the joy of St. Patrick’s Day is letting your hair down. Whether you can dance an Irish jig or not, don’t hesitate to cut a rug and encourage others to join in the fun. Hosts who set a lighthearted tone will ensure their guests follow suit, guaranteeing a fun time will be had by all.

Letty has quite a backstory. She survived not just a high-speed car chase but also a highspeed car crash. Shy at first, Letty feels comfortable enough now to come out of her pigaloo and wheek for romaine. With time and love, she will soon be showing off her true piggie personality and is sure to provide you with many silly memories.

The Roving Sportsman… Is Venison Truly a Healthy Choice? By Jon Pries

E

very fall across this great land of ours, thousands of hunters head to the fields and hills to pursue their favorite game animals. Those of us throughout the eastern states will most often pursue whitetail deer. Hunters often travel to the western states to hunt mule deer, elk, moose, Bighorn sheep, and antelope. While some hunters refer to the meat of a whitetail deer as “venison,” the truth of the matter is that the meat of all of these various animals is lumped into the term “venison.” So, keep that in mind as we look at data and statistics that describe the benefits of venison as compared to other meats that we consume. There are many reasons why hunters spend so much time outdoors, but certainly one of the main reasons is to be able to supply our families a freezer full of tasty free-range wild game meat. With the continual rise in the price of food and fuel seems to have no foreseeable end, the cost of any sort of red meat, particularly beef, just keeps rising. Additionally, many of us like to hunt simply because the various types of venison are said to be healthier for us. The initial thought is that it must be healthier because all of these animals are free-range and eat organic food sources. Unlike some farm-raised animals, they

do not consume or are not injected with hormones, antibiotics, or other government-approved chemicals. For most folks, this is reason enough to consider any venison as a healthier alternative to other red meats. But, let’s take a closer look at some data that will support the idea that venison is truly better for you than some of the alternatives. Every Pennsylvania hunter who has succeeded over the years in taking a deer in the fall has seen that when the carcass is processed, there is a noticeable layer of fat just under the hide and layered on top of the carcass itself. This layer can vary in thickness and, at times, can be quite thick as the animal has built up this reserve layer of fat in preparation for the winter months ahead when food is less available. But the meat itself tends to be less marbled with fat as you would find in beef, for instance. According to a study by Michigan State University, a 3-ounce cooked serving of ground venison has 159 calories. The same size serving of ground beef contains 204 calories, and the equal size serving of ground pork yielded 252 calories. In fact, it has been determined that venison has fewer calories than turkey, chicken, and lamb. If you are trying to reduce caloric intake, venison is thus a good alternative to other meats. When it comes to the protein levels,

It is a proven fact that carbohydrates are not good for us when we are trying to lose weight, making the level of carbohydrates in venison an added bonus. Venison has zero carbohydrates. Further, it is also rich in Vitamin B2 and B3, which aid in metabolism, giving you more energy. If you still hesitate to add more venison to your diet, please consult your family doctor. I know of several instances where individuals have had heart issues and were advised by their doctors to cut out all red meat in their diet permanently. Upon inquiring about eating venison, they were told they could consume venison as much as they would like.

47 • Webb Weekly March 16, 2022

venison has a slight advantage, with approximately 22.5 grams of protein per 3-ounce serving, whereas the same size serving of beef yielded 21 grams of protein, and the pork serving yielded 22 grams. Venison is also shown to have a better amount of fat than beef and pork. The same serving size of ground venison has only 7 grams of fat and 3.4 grams of saturated fat. On the other hand, beef has 12.5 grams of fat and 4.8 grams of saturated fat. Pork has 18 grams of fat and 6.5 grams of saturated fat in the same size portion. If you have set a goal of reducing weight after the more sedentary lifestyle that most folks live during the less active winter months, selecting venison as the meat in an otherwise well-balanced diet can help.

page 21 of your handbook. Since I don’t keep any trout, I’m very comfortable fishing under these special regulations, and another plus is that I seldom ever have to deal with crowded conditions. If you’re out on the first day, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you what that can be like. To be honest, I haven’t gone trout fishing on the first day for several years now, but instead, my wife and I usually head out to a lake not stocked with trout and fish for crappies and perch. Now that brings up a whole new subject, “spring panfishing,” but I’ll save that subject for another upcoming story. Wendy Weaver, Owner wendy@weaverwireless.com

a discouraging trend that hopefully will not leave Williamsport, the Birthplace of Little League, without a chartered league in its city limits. Newberry’s decision has been a hot sports topic locally. Days after that announcement became public; I received a telephone call from Fred Agnoni. Agnoni was a player in that very first Newberry League, then called Lincoln Boys Little League. He shared stories about the league, particularly about his friendship with Vic Staccone, one of the league’s best players who was later killed in combat during the Korean War. “I always looked up to Vic. He was my teammate, and he kind of protected me against some of the bullies,” Agnoni explained.

During our conversation, Agnoni said he had spoken to some of the remaining members of that four-team 1946 league, and they were happy I had mentioned the league in one of my columns. As an appreciative tribute to those surviving players and family members of those deceased, listed below are the participants of that very first Newberry League. – Armour Leather Company: ManagerBill Shooter, Frances Dymeck, C. Moon, R. Tempesco, R Fullerton, V. Messener, J. Hawkins, P. Bachman, W. Wrench, L. Meconi, L. Fessler, J. Luke, W. Shooter. – Bernstine Drug Store: Bill KrezmerManager, R. Quigley, R. Forney, F. To millions of youngsters around the world, ‘Baseball’ is the middle name of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Let’s hope the ruling lords of Major League Baseball, the legion of volunteers that provide Little League Baseball in their communities, and those with fond memories of their own baseball days can combine and continue to ensure that baseball itself is not devoured in its own acrimony.

Lindor $32 million, and Britton $14 million. When the executive committee’s negative recommendation was put before the 30 MLB teams, it was rejected by a 26-4 vote in favor of the contract. Make that 26-2 without the Mets’ and Yankees’ objections. A recent FOX Sports ranking listed Pennsylvania as having the seventh-best baseball background among the fifty states. Its rationale included it being one of their “favorite places on earth, home of the Little League World Series and one of the most magical baseball spaces imaginable.” That’s great to hear, but even in this baseball paradise, the landscape is shifting. The announcement earlier this year by the former Newberry Little League; that they were dropping their 75-year LLB affiliation and becoming a Cal Ripken League continued

We aren’t going out like the past two times. We had an excellent practice. Everyone came out possessed.” SJNRA executed its offense better than any game this season. They had 16 assists in just three quarters. The ball movement was impressive, and everyone made an impact. The defensive intensity was second to none. These past experiences have helped and will help the Knights move forward. “We have seen a lot of different
