Four Wrestlers Take Gold in Hershey By Scott N. Lowery & Dave Bellomo [Editor’s Note: Whew! We have a whole lotta wrestling to cover this week. We had FOUR local wrestlers bring home State Gold and we want to make sure they get all the attention they deserve! So thank you to Jimmy for giving up his space this week (I’ll also be donating mine) so that we can feature these four amazing athletes. And, speaking of amazing athletes, as of press time, the Neumann Knights were on their way to the Final Four, still looking for their own PIAA Gold. We will have more coverage on their journey next week!]

hey come from rival schools — their communities separated by only 5.8 miles connected by Route 405. One wears blue, the other red, and their Indian mascots are identified by separate tribes. But as they gathered with their statewide wrestling brethren in Hershey seeking mat glory, Muncy and Montgomery returned home, sharing two very special accomplishments — each school had crowned a state champion!

Muncy junior Scott Johnson and Montgomery sophomore Conner Harer brought gold medals back home by winning the PIAA 126-pound and 145-pound AA titles, respectively. Johnson’s win came via a decisive 9-2 victory over Brockway’s Mark Palmer, while Harer blanked Faith Christian’s Eric Alderfer 3-0. Emotion and fulfillment consumed both young men as their longtime dreams became a reality. “I wanted this so bad. Before I walked out on the mat, I was thinking in my head; this is mine. There’s nothing that is going to stop me,” Johnson reflected. “The night before the match, I didn’t have the best night’s sleep. I was really anxious and probably only had three or four hours of sleep. I was really excited because I knew this would be the day I had been looking forward to — becoming a state champion.” After a pre-match breakfast of pancakes and hash browns and six minutes of applying his craft, his dream had become a reality. “We are all extremely proud of what

Scotty has been able to accomplish,” said Muncy athletic director Curt Chilson. “He brought home silver last year, so I think he was on a mission this year to stand on the top of that podium and bring home a gold medal. “It was a great run for his brother Austin as well. To make it to the final as a freshman is quite an accomplishment. We are excited for both of them and are looking forward to what the future holds. I’m hoping their success will inspire some of our younger wrestlers to be the best they can.” Johnson becomes the seventh wrestler in school history to capture a state wrestling crown. He joins Bryon Dugan, Mick Hill, Larry Lauchle, Zach Strickland, Ryan Hembury, and Joe Klock in that select group. “I have always looked up to Strickland and Hembury, and it is very cool to be in those guys’ company of winning a state championship,” Johnson added. “I realize there have been other brother combinations that have wrestled in Hershey, but I was proud to have Austin there with me. It was great to put the Johnson name into that conversation of wrestling brothers.” For Harer, wrestling has long been the

crest worn proudly on the family shield. “Winning the state championship means a lot knowing that my father was a two-time state place winner and my younger brother actually has more elementary and junior high state titles than me. From top to bottom, those things have made me want to work harder, not only for myself but for my family as well. “Leading up to the final match, I was pretty relaxed and enjoying the moment. You train 364 days a year just waiting for this moment to come, so I just wanted to take it all in, have fun, and know that the work you put in was all worth it and all I had to do was show that my work would pay off. “I have always trained hard and watched my diet. I keep my diet simple. I eat three or four meals a day, but it is always healthy eating, making sure that I put the right food in my body so that it comes out the right way. My eating habits are very basic because my stomach isn’t used to junk food and stuff. “I felt I was properly prepared. It’s been forty years since Montgomery had a state champion, so winning

WRESTLING GOLD that gold medal showed that even at a small school like ours that anything is possible if you just put your mind to it.” Like Johnson, Harer had a teammate join him in Hershey, Red Raiders senior Devon Deem, who placed fifth at 152 pounds. “It was a great weekend for our community,” expressed a happy Mike Snyder, Montgomery athletic director. “We had a lot of support for Conner and Devin in Hershey. It was nice to see a lot of red down there. Ty Hall, who was Montgomery’s only other state champion, 42 years ago in 1980, was there to witness the tournament, and it was great to have him there. Ty has long been a great supporter of the program and has been back to the school on many occasions. “Conner is a very high-value athlete and wrestler who has probably been visualizing this moment since the time he was a little kid. He took the trip to Hershey with his dad since he was six or seven years old. It is something he has been training for for a very long time. His accomplishment was achieved by his hard work and dedication to his

craft and the mentorship of his father. My hat is off to him. “On Sunday after the championships, we had a parade around town when we got back home. Conner and Devin chose to ride on top of the fire truck even though it was freezing cold. After the parade, we gathered in the high school auditorium, where we watched the boy’s matches, and both of them then spoke to the crowd. Both of them did a tremendous job speaking. It was a very emotional time for them for different reasons. For Devin as a senior, it is his last ride. He finished fourth in the states last year at 152 pounds and took fifth this year in a very difficult weight class. He spoke about the community support and what it has meant to him and his family. He will be going on to the Naval Academy and will be wrestling there. He is very excited about that opportunity, and we are very excited for him as well.” *** “Last year was tough for Isaac,” said Lenny Cory, Isaac Cory’s dad. “He was confident he could do well and won Sectionals and Districts but didn’t

have the best Super Regional meet.” 2021 was an unusual wrestling season for everyone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of having a traditional State meet, the tournament was broken up into two super-regional meets where Isaac was unable to place. However, this year was different as Isaac Cory actually stepped back from wrestling, choosing instead to focus on strength training. “Isaac would be in the gym every day at 4:30 a.m.,” said Lenny. “He got into lifting, and it made him confident. He was much more of an offensive wrestler on the mat.” In addition to improving his mindset, his strength training changed Isaac’s body. Wrestling in the 152 lb. weight class just one year before, Isaac wanted to move up to the 189 lb. class. Montoursville, however, was in need of someone to wrestle at 172, where he did well all throughout the regular season. Still, Isaac felt he could win at 189. After speaking with his coach, Matt Yonkin, Isaac was allowed to wrestle for a spot at the higher weight class. “Isaac came to me and said he wanted to move up to 189,” said Coach Matt Yonkin. “I told him that I felt he could go to states no

matter what weight class he was in. My only reservation, however, was that he would be giving up a lot of weight when he got to the finals as he would be wrestling guys that were full 189 lbers. Isaac was still light at that weight class.” After winning the wrestle-off, the real challenge began where he lost to Jersey Shore powerhouse Hadyn Packer. “Isaac had become a little overconfident with his new strength and went chest-to-chest with Packer,” said Lenny. Packer ended up beating Cory 10-7 in the Section finals. “That loss needed to happen. He probably wouldn’t have won states if that didn’t happen. He learned he needed to be more tactical.” Isaac went on to win Districts and Regionals, ultimately beating Cole Karpinsky 5-1 to take the PIAA-AA State title. “Any reservations I had about Isaac wrestling in the 189 lb. weight class were dispelled because his strength could match anyone he came up against,” said Coach Yonkin. Yonkin went on to say that District 4 wrestling had an incredible year, and that this

area is a hot-bed for wrestling. When asked how he felt about his son winning the state title in wrestling, Lenny Cory laughed, “When Isaac came off the mat, the first thing he told me was that I was no longer the #1 wrestler in the house anymore. I was very proud of him.” Lenny Cory went on to explain that he was a state runner-up in wrestling in 1986. Isaac Cory plans on attending Penn College, where he will wrestle and major in Power Generation with an emphasis on diesel engines. *** Dalton Perry is a 126-pound freshman. He has had an incredible season. And he capped it off in the best way possible — by winning the District 6 State Championship. Perry picked up a 6-3 comeback decision against Hempfield Area’s Ethan Ledin. This was Central Mountain’s first State Title since Brian Brill defeated Cannon-McMillan’s, Nick Catalano. Dalton started off his season in spectacular fashion. Competing in the Tom Best Memorial Top

Braxton Apello-Fries of Nazareth was next for Perry. He defeated the 3x state medalist 4-1 to head to the semi-finals. He then fell behind 1-0 in the semifinal match but came back to win against Thomas Jefferson’s Maddox Shaw. Perry trailed Ledin 3-2 in the last minute of the third period. But he kept his composure. He took an aggressive shot, which led to a takedown and a near fall followed. That was all it took for the freshman to come out on top. He took gold to end his inaugural season in incredible fashion. Dalton is Central Mountain’s fourth wrestler to win a state title, joining brothers Dylan and Andrew Alton and Brill. He told Michael Kresovich of the Lock Haven Express, “It’s pretty cool to be up there with those guys.” Pretty cool indeed. Perry has managed an incredible season that would make any senior proud, let alone to accomplish as a freshman. I’m sure that he has a bright wrestling future ahead, and it probably won’t be the last time he’s featured winning gold in the PIAA State Tournament.

Hat Tournament at Williamsport High School, Perry kicked off the tournament with a pin and followed it by winning the whole thing. After winning the Top Hat tourney, he would then continue to win his next eight matches — bringing him to 12-0 before losing his first match. His losses would be temporary, though. After losing two out of three matches, he would pick up a winning streak that would have him taking his next 24 matches in a row. Of those 24 wins, 21 ended in a pin, tech fall (winning by 15 or more points), or major decision (winning by eight or more points). Two of the other three were forfeits, and the third was a still-impressive 10-5 win. All in all, Perry would end his season at 41-2, which is a new record for most wins by a freshman in Clinton County. The previous record of 40 wins was set by Andrew Alson in 2007. Perry started his road to Hershey by defeating Jack Van Dee of Cathedral Prep in the Northwest Regional finals. Arriving in Hershey for the big show, he first took on Zander Phatorus of Waynesburg, where he picked up an 8-3 decision.

abe Stillman, an accomplished and popular blues singer is one of the bright lights to have come out of the local music scene in recent years. An indication of Gabe’s talent and how well he is thought of by people in the music world and his fans was his recent nomination for two honors from the prestigious Central Pennsylvania Music Awards. He was nominated for Best Blues Band and Best Blues Album. Gabe talked about what these honors meant to him and discussed his career and musical influences as well. “I’m thrilled to have received nominations for several awards coming up this Spring. It’s an honor to be recognized at the state level and be nominated for two Central Pennsylvania Music Awards for Best Blues Band and Album of the Year for my debut record “Just Say The Word,” Gabe told Webb Weekly. “It’s also a great achievement that the record is recognized globally by The Blues Foundation and is nominated for a Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist Album. A nomination in these awards sends a message to fans and industry players that an artist is not only serious about being a professional musician but is able to capture other people and move them. That’s my goal in making music. I’m trying to evoke an emotion in the listener,

both in the live setting and in the studio. I never expect recognition for my work, but it’s always encouraging when things like this happen. I’m beyond proud of my band and everyone who was involved with making the record, and I’m excited to be pursuing my passion of playing live as much as possible.” Gabe’s nominated album has been described this way, “Just Say The Word” is packed with 13 originals plus two covers and further solidifies Stillman’s reputation as an accomplished guitarist and meaningful songwriter. Produced by Anson Funderburgh at Wire Recording in Austin, Texas, “Just Say the Word” is a compelling listen from beginning to end, with powerful contributions from the Texas Horns and special appearances by Funderburgh, Sue Foley, and Greg Izor. Gabe spoke of his experience in recording the album. “I had the time of my life making this record. It was simultaneously the most professional studio experience I’ve ever had and the most fun I’ve ever had,” declared Gabe. “The studio can be a daunting task. Being forced to listen to your own music over and over, when you’re as self-critical as most musicians are, is not always a positive experience. What can help that, though, is being surrounded by the right people. I’m very fortunate to have had an amazing crew of musicians and studio staff who always gave their negative

the esteemed Gibson Guitar Award at the Memphis IBCs in 2019, we chatted again and agreed I would assist him on a more permanent managerial basis, which remains the case today. He knew this milestone achievement in 2019 could be just a moment in time, or it could be a major step forward on his journey. Perhaps an opportunity that should be taken seriously and one that had the potential to open new doors — which it did and further on with the success of his 2 EPs and his first fulllength release “Just Say The Word,” which debuted on the Billboard Blues charts. He is now nominated for a Blues Music Award in the New Emerging Artist Album category. In order to reach this BMA nomination achievement, his release underwent serious evaluation and scrutiny by industry professionals selected by the Blues Foundation as nominators worldwide.” She concluded, “The decision to choose being a professional musician as your livelihood is not one to be taken lightly. The sacrifices one makes are overwhelming, the patience needed, learning from the setbacks incurred, and the willingness to dive deep into the business side is rare among musicians. Gabe Stillman understands all of this and takes on every challenge he meets with gusto and determination. Watching Gabe grow as a well-rounded musician and as an astute businessman brings me great satisfaction and joy.” Gabe spoke of the eclectic musical influences that have shaped his career. “This changes for me all the time. Anson Funderburgh is not only a wonderful musician and producer, but he’s a great guy, and he created an environment that made being in the studio feel as organic as being onstage. ” Bonnie Tallman is Gabe’s manager and has looked after his career in a loving and motherly fashion. She took the time to tell us what Gabe is like and what it has meant to manage him. “I first met Gabe Stillman when I was teaching a class at the Uptown Music Collective titled, Beyond the Music: You’re the CEO. The class was intended to create an entrepreneurial mindset for UMC students who were leaning towards considering music performance as a career, their livelihood,” Tallman said. “My class was designed to be the dose of reality - just being a great musician would not guarantee success.” She continued, “We developed business plans, created budgets, talked about profit and loss. Gabe attended my class when he was a young teenager, maybe 14. For all of my students over several years of teaching this class, one student, Gabe, kept in touch with me and would often say, “can we get together and chat?” Knowing that I once owned my own artist management company and was heavily involved in the music business for over 25 years, he wanted to learn as much as possible about the business side of pursuing a career as a performing artist.” “After he was selected as the recipient of

MUSICIANS

“phases” in what my musical tastes are, and most other artists who I’ve talked with say the same thing,” stated Gabe. “The most important thing to me as an artist is not getting stuck on one thing and preventing my own growth. That’s why I’ll listen to B.B. King Live At The Regal and then listen to Mozart’s Don Giovanni and then listen to Nirvana’s Nevermind. All three of those examples are very different musically, but they all connect with me emotionally, and that’s more important than the kind of music that is being made. Inspiration comes from everywhere for me, and I hope it will always be that way.” No matter what happens with the Central Pennsylvania Music Awards, it appears that Gabe Stillman has a bright musical future.

Kopper & Kash “Kopper & Kash” The Pennycoff Sisters — Ava 15 & Mia 16. These two gingers have been singing with their recording artist father “Jeff Orrin,” since before they could walk. They went from using their dad’s guitar case as a stage to singing alongside him. Now the sisters are making some music of their own. Their music is filled with real-life experiences, like losing a loved one to a fun-filled break-up song. Recently they visited Nashville to record at the Hilltop Studio with Buddy Hyatt. The girls have several new original songs being released on Spotify and most major streaming platforms. “That Jacket,” a heartfelt song about the loss of their brother

Matt was released July 30, 2021, on his first birthday in Heaven. “That Jacket” has also been nominated for a Central PA Music Award. It is nominated for Song of the Year. You can preview their information, see their show schedule, and hear their music on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube @ “Kopper & Kash.” Their shows are a mix of original music, new and old country. The shows are also a mix of classic songs from across the decades. Their original music touches people and addresses real-life situations, and brings awareness to the dangers of serious issues like drinking and driving. This is a cause that is near to the sisters’ hearts after losing a brother to an alcohol-related accident. “True You,” an original, is a catchy and fun break-up song that will capture the audience and have them humming all day long. The sisters cover a wide array of songs, from The Beatles to Bon Jovi. Kopper and Kash have had the opportunity to play different venues throughout central Pennsylvania. They are PA Fair association members and perform shows at venues such as the Clinton County Fair, The Center County Grange Fair, along with other festivals and restaurants. Kopper and Kash are very involved in Uptown Music Collective, a music school. This is a reputable school in which they perform each semester in the course showcases. Ava plays and accompanies on the acoustic guitar, and Mia is very talented on the bass.

County Hall Corner: Government Windfall – A Wind or a Fall? By Larry Stout

T

he abundance of people who spend money on lottery tickets all dream that someday they will be the one to hit it big. Imagine what it would be like to win a million dollars! All your problems would be over, right? According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, one-third of all lottery winners will declare bankruptcy within a few years of their windfall. The lesson here is that when money comes around, it needs to be used wisely, or it will soon be done and gone with little to show for it. The $22 million America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds allocated to Lycoming County could be a tremendous boost to our region or a lottery winner belly-up failure. It would be interesting to track the $130 billion for municipalities and counties nationally that has been allocated from the $1.9 trillion (!) ARPA spending bill. Though it seems like it would be a dream come true, these government entities are discovering what lottery winners must deal with. Relatives you never knew you had come banging at your door. Everyone you know suddenly

has a need that your newfound money would fix. Nothing makes fair-weather friends faster than giving away money. To the credit of the Lycoming County Board of Commissioners, they knew they had a hot potato in their hands and decided to let it cool down a bit. They began in June of last year by first discussing funding needs with the Williamsport City Council and the township and borough officials in the county. They spent three nights meeting, discussing their strategic plans with them. These talks were important as they were not just considering various funding projects but also sought how the money could be leveraged by linking various government en-

Residents of South Williamsport and the Local Community, I have made great strides in improving the current location of @YourConvenience Store and am looking for South Williamsport Borough approval to continue with my vision of what a modern day convenience store should look like. It is my goal to renovate the historic building into something the residents of South Side can be proud of, this while adding to the tax base and increasing adjacent property value. I will be providing more detail in future weeks. Thank you! A proud South Williamsport Resident, Businessman and Taxpayer, Brad Gordner

COUNTY HALL tities’ projects or concerns together. These were not just brainstorm sessions either, because the commissioners made a pact together that they were going to invest these funds into projects that would have an immediate impact, yet at the same time could be “generational.” This could be described as “helpful now and at the same time building for tomorrow.” It is a difficult bar to reach, but it is the wisest approach when winning the lottery. With those parameters in mind, they went from local officials to the various authorities, particularly water and sewer. Some of these systems are in dire need of repair and servicing, and these funds would meet the ‘now & tomorrow’ focus that the commissioners are seeking to meet. They also met with developers and realtors who expressed to them that when they are exploring where to build new homes and apartments, access to water and sewer is critical. If they must develop a property without these utilities and thus have to provide water and sewer themselves, they cut their profit margin so small that it is not worth the effort. The seriousness of this is evident as currently, there are only 175 homes for sale in Lycoming Coun-

ty when the average is generally 600. The commissioners are also discussing with farmers what their concerns are and what they foresee as their challenges down the country road. One is broadband, as even modern agricultural equipment is more and more dependent on internet access. Rural areas are desperate for better connectivity, and unfortunately, the technology is still expensive to make this vision come to pass. It seems to this observer that the Lycoming County Commissioners Board has crossed every T and dotted every I, but the three commissioners want to ensure that everyone has a voice in this matter. Already, $52 million worth of requests have been submitted for the $22 million in grants, but there might yet be a need that could cut its way up to the front of the line. To that end, the Lycoming County Commissioners are hosting a Town Hall Meeting at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 28th, at the Commissioners Meeting Room in the Executive Plaza, right behind the Lycoming County Courthouse. The public is invited to express their opinions and concerns. The final outcome could well become a future blueprint for the next decade and beyond for our county.

colors. I’d style this legging in either blue or pink with a striped tee and denim jacket. I’d also recommend Everlane’s perform cropped leggings in black as an alternative to bike shorts. They work nicely under a gauzy sundress. Plain black leggings are useful, and all, but earth tones are gaining in popularity within the legging community. Muted neutrals such as moss, mocha, and stone can be quite chic worn with a coordinated sweater set and flats. Or they can be sporty when paired with a matching crop top or sports tank. Check out Girlfriend Collective for their variety of matching sets, colors, and a wide range of sizes. In addition to waistband, hem, and color, another key detail to look out for when shopping is material. A ribbed legging adds subtle texture to bring another interesting element to your look. This comfy version is perfect for lounging while looking put together with an oversized sweater and house shoes. Or take them out on an errand run with a button-down, quilted jacket, and sneakers. Nordstrom has ribbed leggings and a metallic sock gift set from the brand Hue that I’ve been

eyeing in brown and navy. Lastly, but far from least, is the controversial stirrup legging. They say if you’ve lived through a trend when it first happened, it’s best to avoid it during any resurgences. Well, I barely survived stirrup pants in the eighties/ early nineties, and while I’m not a personal fan of the stirrup leggings, I would be remiss in my journalistic duty not to include them in this thoroughly researched report on legging trends. So, with that caveat in mind, I can see how stirrup leggings would be chic if they are fitted and worn with a wrap sweater and a ballet flat. I don’t know if I can get behind styling them with heels where the stirrup is pulled over and around the shoe. If you’re up for the challenge, H&M has several stirrup leggings options at affordable prices for the adventurous leggingleaning folks out there. The key to leggings, no matter the style you go with, is that they pass the anti-sheer test. Granted, I’m a fan of transparency in most situations, but when it comes to leggings, I want to keep the color of my skivvies to myself. So, in good light, do a few squats in the mirror to check to ensure your leggings are properly opaque.

an, everywhere you look, things are changing in our area. A lot of the stores we once knew are gone. I was never a big Kmart shopper, but when I was a little girl, my dad often went. Saturday mornings, we would head into Kmart to grab a few things. Do you guys remember when the food court was attached!? I vaguely remember it but know sometimes we would go over and sit at the tables. Dad never let us leave there without getting a slushie and soft pretzel. There was nothing like walking into Kmart, knowing you were coming out with a snack. Now, we have Hobby Lobby

our hearts out. We loved Value City and the Hallmark Store; they were our favorite stores. JCPenney is a place where Mom and Dad took us for new shoes. We would get new shoes, then go to dinner as a family at Dino’s inside the mall or Pizza Hut on the golden strip. (Hey, at least Pizza Hut is still surviving!) I also knew JCPenney’s dressing rooms really well. We not only got new shoes at JCPenney, but Mom would buy my brother and me new clothes from there. Luke was easy-going and younger, so whatever Mom picked out, he didn’t have much to say. Then there was me — a feisty little firecracker. (Hey, I have one of them now too. Eight years old and about 4 ft. tall.) Let’s just say

which is awesome! If they just had a slushie and pretzel bar as we left, now that would be nostalgic. Country Cupboard closed? Come on now. That place was a staple. I loved their buffet! There was nothing like going there with your fat pants on, ready to indulge. It was like a race you prepared for all day. Not eating much, so you went there with a big appetite, ready to indulge in some amazing food. I loved their pumpkin muffins, baked corn, mac n’ cheese, and fried chicken. Plus, the salad bar was top-notch with the real bacon they had to top on your salad. My kids would later go out to the store with

their wooden nickel given to us by the waitress and could go get some penny candy with it. Kids won’t remember this anymore, and that makes me sad. Can we talk about the mall!? For real. The memories there as a Andrea kid. The memories McElroy as a teenager. The memories with my own kids. I walked the halls of that mall with my Grammy Perry for years and years. Pap would sit on the bench for hours watching folks walk by as Gram and I would shop

my mom and I in no way had the same fashion. She loved the cute frilly ruffle crap with the big shoulder pad stuff. I, on the other hand, did not. She would make me try this stuff on, and I would fight it. Needless to say, the JCPenney changing room was my butt whoopin’ center. Even if we weren’t trying on clothes, I knew I had crossed the line when she said let’s go to the changing rooms. *enter the laughing emoji here* Ah yes. Good ole JCPenney. Where my momma set my booty straight. Years later, when I was much older and became a momma myself, Mom and I would go to the mall together and park outside JCPenney. I would tease her, saying, “let’s hit up the changing rooms for old times’ sake,” and we would just crack up about it. I told her someday that the famous JCPenney butt-whooping would end up in the Webb. And here we are! The mall had so many good memories. My husband, who was once my boyfriend for five years, walked around holding hands on Friday nights. My son Tyler’s first restaurant was Friendly’s at only a week old. There he sat in his baby seat next to me in the booth. In front of me sat a big old Reese’s sundae after a delicious BBQ chicken sandwich. A big sundae for a new mom is just what the doctor ordered. I was exhausted. I love some sour cream and onion Auntie Anne’s pretzels with a fresh lemonade. They better relocate; I don’t know what I’d do. There and Maurice’s are my two favorite mall spots, which surprisingly are both still

there even though the mall will never be the same. Does anyone remember Heavenly Pasteria in downtown Williamsport? Oh my goodness, we ate there so often with Mom and Dad. My dad especially loved it there, and he really loved the garlic knots. The owner was such a sweet Italian man, and we got to know him after going pretty often on the weekends. Bring to boil then reduce to a simmer. Add balls and cook for 30 seconds. (The dough will float to top.) Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to baking sheet, making sure the pretzels aren’t touching. (They will look like a hot mess, but look glorious when they come out of the oven. Trust me.) Brush beaten egg over each pretzel, then sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile, make cheese sauce: Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Stir in milk and bring to a simmer. When milk begins to thicken, stir in cheese, whisking constantly until sauce is smooth. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and cayenne. Serve with the pretzels.

will feel welcome and wanted. But being attractive can also be distractive. Please stick with me as I explain this statement. Being attractive is how we gather a crowd so we can proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. But friends, the good news is hard to hear. It is offensive. It declares that you are a sinner, and without the saving grace of Jesus Christ, you will live and die in condemnation. The good news of Jesus Christ begins with this crushing diagnosis. At first blush, the good news is anything

of Jesus Christ is not attractive – at least not initially. The reason it is called good news is because after the brutal diagnosis comes the hope of a miraculous cure: through Jesus Christ, God extends mercy and grace! Romans 8:1 declares, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Good news! There is a cure – and

His name is Jesus. His birth, suffering, death, and resurrection provide access to the cure for anyone who believes. Anyone! When you place your faith in Jesus, you are no longer guilty and condemned – you are a child of God and secure in God’s love. It is truly good news! But then it gets potentially offensive again. Receiving the abundant grace of God is a gift so grand and so miraculous that it requires us to live up to it; to live holy; to allow God to

a moment by moment surrender to being a living sacrifice. This is the kind of worshiper God seeks. Established believer, let me challenge your thinking: the nice things your church does to attract the lost are not intended for you. You have already received God’s grace. Your sins are forgiven and forgotten. You are a new creation. You are no longer enslaved to a fear of death. You have been declared a child of God and co-heir with Jesus Christ. Your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. You have received the gift of the Holy Spirit.

You are free. Forever. Hallelujah! Now, stop going to church to get what you want. Forget the worship style – and give yourself fully to worshiping. Forsake the soft chairs – and give yourself fully to serving. Give up your convenient parking spot and make it available to someone else. Quit complaining about the mess the donuts make. Instead, offer to be the guy who picks the donuts up at 7 AM. Stop critiquing the coffee or moaning about the spill stains on the carpet. Instead, start serving in the café or volunteer as a custodian. Stop

whining about the children crying in the service. Instead, sign up to serve in the nursery or the children’s church. Stop griping about the organ or the guitars or the drums or the song choices. Instead, start offering your gift or talent wholeheartedly to God. If you want to truly worship God, then stop thinking about yourself and what you want. Instead, Be selfless. Give yourself fully to serving others and pleasing the heart of God. Then you will be the kind of worshiper God is seeking.

completely recalibrate our heart and mind. Jesus called it, “Denying self and taking up your cross daily.” Paul called it “offering your body as a living sacrifice.” If we fully surrender to God’s transformative grace, it changes us. Instead of being consumers, we become replenishers. Instead of receiving, we give. Instead of sitting, we serve. Instead of storing up on earth, we store up in heaven. Instead of thinking of self, we think of others. True worship requires a life of disciplined sacrifice, a daily crucifixion of the consumerist self,

Driving Habits That Could Help the Planet

Call 570-326-9322

H

abits can be hard to kick. Many people need a unique catalyst in order to ditch habits they’ve long wanted to put in their rearview mirrors. New

Year’s Day is one notable example of a unique event that compels millions of people to make positive changes every year. Though it might not be a cause for

celebration like the dawn of a new year, increased awareness of climate change and its effects could be the catalyst many people need to make positive, planet-friendly changes to their daily routines. Driving habits are one area where individuals can alter their daily routines in ways that benefit the planet. These eco-friendly alterations can be instituted each day by individuals who want to do their part to combat climate change. Avoid aggressive driving. Aggressive driving is both a safety risk and a threat to the environment. According to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, aggressive driving can lower gas mileage in light-duty vehicles by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic and by as much as 30 percent at highway speeds. Avoid idling. Many drivers have long relied on idling to warm up their vehicles on cold mornings. However, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control notes that modern vehicles do not need warming up in temperatures above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s important that drivers recognize this, as idling wastes fuel and increases the amount of vehicle exhaust in the air. Vehicle exhaust increases air pollution and contains pollutants that have been linked to

asthma, additional lung diseases and heart disease. A far more effective, and considerably less harmful, way to warm up a vehicle is to do so for 30 seconds and then drive slowly for the first few minutes. Purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle. Drivers looking for their next vehicle can prioritize fuel efficiency if they want their driving habits to have a smaller carbon footprint. The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency provide information on fuel efficient vehicles, and that information can be accessed at Fueleconomy.gov. In addition, the EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide notes that electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and cleaner burning gasoline vehicles are among the more efficient and less polluting cars and trucks on the market. Make fewer trips. The Fremont Green Challenge reports that more than half of all driving trips in the United States are taken for social, recreational, shopping, or family/personal errands. By combining these trips, drivers can greatly reduce their driving miles. Fewer trips conserves fuel and can reduce air pollution. A few simple tweaks to drivers’ daily habits can benefit the plant in myriad ways.

Organization reports that approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes, many more people walk away from such accidents relatively unscathed. In such instances, knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath of an accident can help drivers and passengers stay safe and start on their road to physical and financial recovery. No two car accidents are the same, but the Insurance Information Institute (III) recommends anyone involved in a car accident take the following steps to make the most informed decisions in what is often a difficult situation. Assess your physical condition. The III recommends people involved in accidents check themselves for injuries in the immediate aftermath of an accident. Call 911 if you are hurt. If you’re seriously injured, try to remain still and only move with the assistance of emergency response personnel. Assess passengers’ physical condition. Drivers who are not too hurt to move can check on their passengers after assessing their own condition. Before moving a passenger who is injured, speak with an emergency response professional.

passenger or if it’s best to wait for first responders to arrive on the scene. Get to a safe place. If possible, move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. If it’s safe to move a vehicle and the vehicle is in a hazardous position, such as in the middle of the road, pull it to the side of the road. If the vehicle won’t start of you suspect it could be dangerous to move it, leave the car where it is and get yourself and any passengers who can move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. Call 911. If you have not already done so, call 911 once you have gotten to a safe place. The III notes that no accident is too minor to involve the police, and some local laws even mandate that all traffic accidents be immediately reported. Be sure to fill out an accident report, which can be vital for drivers who intend to file claims with their insurance providers. Turn the vehicle off. If the vehicle is still running, turn it off. Turn on the vehicle’s hazard lights and, if you can physically do so and it’s safe to do so, place road flares around the car to warn fellow motorists. Exchange information. Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver once everyone has determined that they are not injured.

recommends motorists involved in accidents identify the responding police officers and ask them how to obtain copies of the official accident report. Take pictures and speak with any witnesses, jotting down their names and contact information if possible. Notify your insurance provider. Notify your insurance provider as soon as possible. You can even do so from the scene of the accident if you’re capable of doing so. This can jump-start the claims process. Knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath of a car accident can calm drivers’ nerves and get them on the road to recovery that much sooner.

The III recommends exchanging full names and contact information. Specific information like insurance companies and policy numbers, driver’s license numbers and license plate numbers, the exact location of the accident, and the type, color and model of the other driver’s vehicle also should be exchanged and noted. Avoid discussing fault with the other driver. Drivers will not determine who’s at fault. Such decisions are made by insurance adjusters. Discussing fault with the other driver in the immediate aftermath of an accident can lead to difficult, potentially heated exchanges. Document the accident. The III

ithout a functioning engine, a car is just an expensive driveway ornament. Engines keep vehicles moving, much in the same way the heart provides oxygen and blood to keep the human body running strong. Modern engines are a mixture of mechanical moveable parts and complex computerized systems. Many different parts work in unison to keep a vehicle moving. Engines can be challenging for experienced mechanics, not to mention downright confusing for people who are unfamiliar with what’s under the hood of their vehicle. But any vehicle owner can learn to recognize certain signs that an engine may be on its last legs. Engine shaking An engine that is shaking while running may just have bad spark plugs or loose or damaged hoses,

offers Sturtevant Used Auto Parts in Wisconsin. However, if those fixes don’t work, it could be an indication of a deeper problem that requires a mechanic, such as fuel intake system issues, compromised motor mounts or timing belt problems. Excessive smoke An engine in trouble typically has to work harder. That results in heating up more quickly, which can lead to overheating. Smoke may be white, blue or black (each color indicates a separate problem). Any sign of excessive smoke is a reason to consult a mechanic. Warning lights

Stuff Works. Strange noises Popping or tapping noises may suggest that gasoline is igniting prematurely in the combustion chambers of the cylinders. Grinding noises may tell you that the starter motor needs to be changed or replaced. Transmission issues also can produce grinding sounds. Generally speaking, if the car is making sounds it does not normally make, schedule a service appointment.

Poor fuel efficiency Engine trouble may cause the car or truck to consume gas faster than normal, according to the car information site Carsoid. The engine or one of its components may be faulty. Problems could arise in the spark plugs, oxygen sensor or fuel injector. it in for service. Flakes indicate the engine is creating too much friction and slowly chipping away at the components. Trouble starting Failure to turn over is a clear indicator of engine troubles. It could be the battery, but if the battery is new, look for other causes. Engine trouble does not generally come out of nowhere. Certain signs can warn drivers their vehicles need servicing.

If the “check engine” light remains on, it is notifying the driver of a problem. The issue could be a faulty sensor or something more ominous. Tips Before Buying New Tires

T

hough vehicles can’t function without them, tires are something few drivers think about until something goes wrong. A roadside flat tire or a tire rotation recommendation from a mechanic during a routine oil change appointment may be the only time many drivers give much thought to their tires. That no doubt leads to some confusion about what to do when tires inevitably need to be replaced. The automotive resource Kelley Blue Book notes that the life expectancy of most tires falls between 25,000 and 50,000 miles. That’s a big gap, and car owners can check their vehicle manuals to see if

their vehicle manufacturer recommends a more specific replacement interval. It’s worth noting that mileage is not the only barometer drivers should use to determine if they need to buy new tires. The following tips can help drivers determine if now is the time to outfit their vehicle with new tires. Measure the tread. KBB notes that a tire assessment should always include measuring the amount of remaining tread. Drivers can do this on their own in various ways. One method involves looking at the tread wear bars, which are little bridges in the grooves between the ridges. If the bars are even with the tread

pattern, then the tire has very little tread remaining and must be replaced. The penny or quarter test is a popular way to determine if tires must be replaced. Insert a penny or quarter into the center of the tread between two ridges with Lincoln’s or Washington’s head facing you. If you can see the very top of the head or the space above the head, the tire must be replaced. If only a little bit of hair is visible, then the tire is nearing its end. The tire has sufficient remaining tread if the some of the forehead is concealed. Check for other signs of wear and tear. Little remaining tread is not the only sign tires must be replaced. Tires with cracked sidewalls, discoloration and/or bulging need to be replaced.

Confirm a larger issue isn’t lurking. Uneven wear on tires is typically a byproduct of a larger issue. Though tires that have worn unevenly will need to be replaced, replacing them without correcting the larger issue will only lead to more uneven wear on the new tires. That’s a costly mistake. KBB notes that poor wheel alignment or suspension issues are typically to blame for uneven wear. This issue can be fixed and should be addressed prior to purchasing a new set of tires. Tires sometimes exhibit telltale signs that they need to be replaced. Before buying replacement tires, drivers can inspect their existing ones and ask their mechanic to confirm that a larger issue isn’t affecting their performance.

ago and delayed pending action by state legislation. Yesterday City Solicitor Charles Bidelspacher informed council that there are bills before the state Senate and House of Representatives at Harrisburg. The question of the city’s responsibility in case streetlights and traffic lights are turned off was brought to the attention of the council. After some discussion it was decided that a blackout ordinance should be rushed through and should be made city law before Tuesday’s blackout. Solicitor Bidelspacher drafted the ordinance from a model ordinance drawn from the National Association of Municipal Law Officers.

The Roving Sportsman… Ahhh —Spring is Here! By Jon Pries

F

inally, the daytime temperatures are reaching into the 50s and 60s, we have seen the last of the late winter snows (hopefully!), and it’s time to get outside and tackle a few springtime chores. The bluebirds have been showing themselves for a while now, but if you have not yet done so, you should (carefully) check the nesting boxes if they have not yet been cleaned out. This task should have already been done a few weeks ago, but as

they are not currently being visited yet by a nesting bluebird, it is worth opening them up carefully to see if any leftover debris might need to be removed. You might even discover the box has been taken over by a pesty field mouse, and a thorough cleaning will allow a bluebird to use the box instead. Do a quick survey of any seedlings that you have planted in the last few years. If they are still in tree tubes, slide the tube up to examine the base of the seedling for any damage by rodents over the winter. A young seedling might survive a small amount of damage to the trunk, but if it is completely

chewed all the way around the stem, it will not survive, and a new seedling will need to be planted. To prevent any future such damage, you should keep any grasses or weeds from growing in an area 3 feet away from the seedling in all directions. Either apply an herbicide such as glyphosate on the grasses and weeds around the tree or lay down a plastic or rubber sheeting to cover the area. Have a saw and pruning shears with you as you examine the seedlings and small trees. This is the ideal time to trim out any dead or broken limbs and remove any sucker growth (those young branches that shoot straight up from the trunk that never produce any fruit). An application of a 1010-10 fertilizer along the dripline of the tree would be beneficial now as well.

Make brush piles. As you rake up limbs and debris that accumulate on the lawn area over the winter months, place them in piles in a nearby woods edge. Small songbirds will use them as nesting areas. If some of your property is a wooded area, lay down several logs parallel to each other and then make the brush pile on top of the logs. Rabbits will often use these brush piles to rear their young, and songbirds will use them as well. Before trees and bushes begin to leaf out and limit visibility in the woods, check for any standing dead trees that you might want to cut for firewood. Dropping them now might be a bit safer than after all the nearby trees have leafed out, and you cannot see the safest direction to drop the tree. Look for gypsy moth egg masses.

Fortunately, some areas were not hit very hard last year by the infestation of the gypsy moth caterpillar, but there certainly were some locations where there was complete defoliation of some mature trees. One year of a complete defoliation will not usually kill a tree unless there were other negative conditions such as a long dry spell. But, if allowed to occur for multiple years, such defoliation will kill a mature tree. While the caterpillars prefer oak trees, they will attack any hardwood tree and will even consume the needles of pine trees and other vegetation. In hard-hit areas, you can spot the light tan egg masses (about the size of a nickel or quarter) on the trunks and undersides of lower main branches. Aerial spraying via helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft is the only way to effectively attack

I must admit that when I talk to other turkey hunters about the upcoming spring season, I am hearing different reports regarding turkey sightings. In some areas, I’m being told that very few turkeys are being seen, but I have been fortunate to see a fair number of birds last fall and even some into the winter months. In the past month or so, I have even been seeing a group of about a dozen turkeys that all appear to be gobblers. However, with some lower numbers of turkey sightings being reported, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has been working on some new approaches.

More specifically, the Game Commission has been involved in an ongoing winter population study and a large-scale study of hens. Up to March 15 this past winter, the Game Commission had been asking for the public’s assistance to help find turkeys to trap. Participants were asked to report to the Game Commission any flocks that they saw. It’s important to note that the turkeys were not removed from the area, but they were simply trapped, leg-banded, and then released back on the same site where they were first reported. Part of the winter trapping program that will continue through to the year

2025 includes placing transmitters on hens. Approximately 100 transmitters will be deployed each winter so that the Game Commission will be monitoring 400 or more hens. It will be one of the largest turkey study projects ever put together, and it’s hoped that many questions can be answered regarding hen population dynamics. Hopefully, the Game Commission study will reveal some crucial information that may help improve turkey populations throughout the state. In the meantime, I’m beginning my own study; I’ll ask my wife to do the driving, and I’ll keep my eyes peeled in the woods and fields.

The hunting hours change starting on May 15 to May 31, when you are permitted to hunt from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset. I kind of like that change of hunting times in the latter part of the season. In years past when you could only hunt mornings, I remember nailing one of my biggest gobblers ever when he finally got within shooting range with only 15 minutes of hunting time left; it would have been very disappointing to have to get up and walk out at noon with some good hunting hours left in the day.

the PIAA Class A final four), and one to TriValley League champion Line Mountain. Marnon intends to keep the progress going forward with his team that loses but one senior starter, leading scorer Claudia Green. Key returning players include juniors Piper Minier, Aleigha Reippel, and Sophia Casella, along with a trio of talented freshmen, Lacy Kriebel, Alizabeth Schuler, and Abby Akers. With Mt. Carmel holding a lead with just seconds to play and a foul shot being taken, Reippel stood near half-court, just staring into the sea of Mountaineer fans in the stands. “I was just appreciating everyone that came to support us because we didn’t have that kind of support last season, most due to COVID, but even this year at the beginning of the season, we didn’t have it. I began to think about everyone

we have inspired, including the little girls that have come out to watch us play, who will be the next wave of South Williamsport players, and in that moment, that meant a lot to me. “I think it was about halfway through the season when we lost to Northumberland Christian that our collective mentality changed,” Rippel added. “We were way behind and had a big comeback, and we began to realize that if we worked together as a team, we had the heart and passion for the game and could really do some good things if we played our best. I think we did that.” Freshman Schuler, who played on South Williamsport’s Little League Softball World Series team, reflected on the difference of youth softball and high school competition. “It was very amazing because of how supportive

the crowd was, and that was a whole lot of fun. This was a hard adjustment to make. In Little League softball, I was one of the oldest players, and now as freshmen, we were the youngest. It was very different. There were times in the playoffs all three of our freshmen we on the court at the same time during key moments of the games. That was very rewarding that we were good enough to play in varsity games.” Rieppel, who also experienced the state semi-finals in soccer, and Schuler now turn their attention to softball, where they are both pitchers on a promising South squad. “I want to be in the same spot, and I know we can be there. It would be pretty neat to go 3 for 3.” “I hope we make it all the way and win it,” added Schuler.

big, do not look physically strong, and there aren’t many of them, with only 11 players on their roster. But, you cannot measure the determination with which they played. They were often down but never out — and yes, they belonged there. During his tenure on the South bench, Marnon has nurtured his program like a fine winemaker with his brew. His first season produced just one win, and most of the games weren’t close. Those fortunes steadily improved and back-to-back Mid-Penn Conference championships and this year’s journey into the PIAA Elite Eight have opponents realizing that the South Ladies are for real. Of their five losses this season, two have come to Mt. Carmel, one to Southern Columbia in the District IV championship game, one to Northumberland Christian (that advanced to

when someone still calls me Coach. It’s a salutation that never gets old and one that is always welcome for all Coaches, past and present, regardless of how many games won or lost. When former players seek you out and still call you Coach, it’s a wonderful feeling, and you think maybe, just maybe, I helped make a positive difference in that person’s life. teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th graders the fundamentals, it was a wonderful experience. The kids were so innocent, funny, lively, and sometimes Paul a bit distracted, Petcavage but overall a wonderful tonic for a lawyer like me who deals daily in many difficult and traumatic situations. The comical words uttered by a number of the young players hearkened me back to the years of my coaching past when I can still recall a player saying things like, “You know, coach, I’d make more baskets if I didn’t shoot so many air balls.” Or more currently, “Coach I’d play better defense if he didn’t keep going past me.” All you can do is nod your head in agreement and laugh! It makes one realize that Coaching memories are special memories for a lifetime, I suspect both for Coaches and players alike. While those memories may sometimes fade due to the other trappings of life, an

experience like a new coaching gig, even with the challenges of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, can bring them flooding back into clarity and makes you remember why you got involved in coaching in the first place. Shortly after my last Article, “You Had Me At Coached,” we lost Coach Ed Wilson, which stirred many memories of my day’s under his Coaching guidance at Mansfield. They had a wonderful memorial service at Decker Gym. In addition to getting to renew old acquaintances with players, I played with and against while there, we all took turns stepping to the mic to share, you guessed it, our memories of Coach Wilson, and we all laughed and cried about the special times we all shared together. When it’s time to put away the sneakers and go on to tackle life, it is often the words and the guidance of the Coaches that will often stick with a player and with those who decide to become a Coach themselves, as they have with me over the years. Special memories, and thankful to hopefully always be called Coach!
