Sorrow, Grace and the Future

I

’m sure many of you have experienced the same emotions I have since first learning about the shooting at Robb Elementary school in Texas. As I am writing this, I am in just a flatout angry mood. These are our children; we are the United States of America, and we must find a way to protect our most vulnerable and innocent as they attend school. I don’t want to hear any political debate about the how, what’s, and why this is happening in our Country. That goes on each and every day; it will solve nothing. I want our children kept safe from the time they get on the bus until the time they get home to hug their parents. The time for party politics is over; the time for the American people to stand up for our children and demand better must happen! From Washington to every state government, the funds must be provided to keep every school safe. This should be priority number one; no elected officials should be sleeping or allowed out of their office until this is provided. We need the best possible security for our children to match today’s craziness. This security plan must be provided by experts, not politicians on a committee, or corporations awarded a bid through lobbyists. The security plan should be implemented before the return of students for the 2022-2023 school year.

The violence occurring across our Country knows no boundary and will not wait for a bunch of state and federal bureaucrats to figure it out. I pray to God in the name of Jesus to provide help in some way to all those affected by this evil act. I have a lot of ground to cover this week, some of it more challenging, just like Gary Brown did when he had the football tucked under his arm and ran all the way from Williamsport to the NFL and on through life. Gary did it with such style, grace, and determination. He had the ability to make things look easy when they really weren’t and always seemed to have that trademark smile from ear to ear. He took this amazing football mind and talent and became a coach sharing his knowledge and passion for the game. Wherever he was coaching, 1,000 yard rushers seemed to follow. I have known Gary and his family since I was very young. You couldn’t find better people, and the Browns’ football legacy stretches far beyond Millionaire land. In recent years most of my conversations have been with his brother Kevin as he paced the sidelines as a Millionaire coach, but Gary’s name always seemed to come up as we talked football and life. I have been aware of many of the challenges Gary has faced throughout his life,

and he always seemed to bounce back with that energy, style, and smile with his wife Kim and family by his side. Gary truly grew from that young Millionaire football player into a remarkable person that had a lifetime full of achieveJim ment. Webb, Jr. The Brown family and Williamsport Area School District would like me to invite you to a Memorial Celebration of the life of Gary L. Brown Jr. It will be held Saturday, June 4th, at STA Millionaire Stadium. The event will begin at 11 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, it will be held in the Williamsport Area High School Auditorium. At press time, the last-minute details were still being taken care of. In speaking with Kim Brown, Gary Chrisman, and Williamsport Athletic Director Sean McCann, they all stressed the fact that everyone is invited to honor Gary and remember a life well-lived. There will be music, remembrance, and several guest speakers from throughout Gary’s life journey. I am sure there will be stories that bring laughter and stories that bring tears, all with grace given to God. One person I know that will be in attendance is Mayor Derek Slaughter. He’s actually a cousin of the Brown boys and played on Williamsport’s 1999 State Championship Basketball Team with Gary’s younger brother, Ryan.

I had the opportunity to sit down with him and talk about all the great things happening around Williamsport this summer, as well as infrastructure plans, but I have run out of words the last couple of weeks. One of the most important topics regarding infrastructure is the Levee Project. The Mayor wanted to thank Congressman Fred Keller for his commitment, specifically in requesting the appropriation of 8 million dollars of his Congressionally Directed Spending to the Levee Project. The Army Corps of Engineers will be starting the risk assessment in the very near future. I know the Mayor is working closely with the local, county, state, and federal partners to ensure the levee is recertified and accredited. As far as all the happenings in Billtown this summer, Steph, has picked up on the summer calendar of events provided by the Mayor. It’s great to see so much happening and going on downtown, which can be found when you flip the page. Regarding our cover and the Williamsport Crosscutters opening their season, the Mayor would like to give a shout out to Senator Yaw for his efforts in helping Williamsport secure the RACP Grant for a new video board at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field and encourages everyone to get out and support Crosscutter Baseball! Let’s all be safe out there. I’ll have more from the Mayor in the coming weeks. God Bless America.

have always said, if you think there is nothing to do in our area, that you aren’t even trying. There is almost always something happening, somewhere to go, or something to do in our area. Adult, kid and family activities are easy to find, because there are plenty of them to do. Don’t believe me? Just keep reading, my friend. There are so many great summer events happening in the City of Williamsport and surrounding communities this year! I can’t wait to share them with you all! Williamsport Crosscutters Begin Year Two In MLB Draft League By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

fter a year of growing pains adjusting to a new league and working under the shadow of COVID, the Williamsport Crosscutters’ officials are very excited about the coming season. This year, several exciting changes will be featured for the Crosscutters and the MLB Draft League. The 2022 season will be split into two halves. The first half runs from June 2 until July 16 and features amateur, draft-eligible players following a similar format to last year. Following a mid-season break that coincides with the MLB Draft and All-Star Game, the second half, beginning July 22, will feature professional players who have exhausted their amateur eligibility or otherwise wish to begin their pro careers. One big change is with games’ starting times. The Crosscutters are implementing changes in the start times for all home games in 2022. Monday through Saturday, games will begin at 6:35 p.m., with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. Sunday games will now move to a 4:05 p.m. first pitch, with gates opening at 3:00

p.m. The only exception is Sunday, June 12, which will be a 6:05 p.m. start. 2022 will feature 40 home games from June 2-Sept. 1, the most in Cutters’ history! This season will also mark the debut of the new $700,000 video board at Muncy Bank and Trust Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field, which will significantly enhance the game night experience for fans and provide more opportunities for sponsors. “After no season in 2020 due to the pandemic and a season impacted by COVID precautions in 2021, we are ready to go full speed ahead this summer,” Gabe Sinicropi, Vice President for Marketing for the Crosscutters, told Webb Weekly. The Cutters Cove Picnic area is back in operation after being suspended in 2021 due to COVID precautions. Those looking to book a group in Cutters Cove or any one of our other areas can find more information at crosscutters.com. Some on-field modifications are taking place in the league for the upcoming season. They include: EXTRA INNINGS: A “sudden death”

“I agree 100% with a past statement from Daniel A. Cupp, while campaigning in regards to promoting taxable business growth, new business and employment, that Borough Manager Steven Cappelli agreed with during our April 27th meeting in regards to my 1900 Riverside Drive property. That is why I am trying to convert my blighted property into a building that will benefit the community. Through the investment will come new jobs at @YourConvenience’s new expanded store that will include Pizza/Subs/6-Packs. South Williamsport will get a beautiful building, increased tax revenue, new employment opportunities, and a chance to show its citizens that it is truly trying to promote business here in South Side.”

season (June 2 - July 16) will be seven innings, excluding home openers. All Tuesday games during the season’s second half (July 22 - Sept. 6) will be nine innings. This will be in effect for a total of three Cutters’ home games: June 14, June 28 & July 12. The team will be managed by former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Litsch. Litsch, 37, was drafted in the 24th round of the 2004 June Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and spent five seasons in MLB with Toronto (2007-2011). He appeared in a total of 88 Major League games, compiling a record of 27-27 with a 4.16 ERA. In the 2008 season, Litsch was 13-9 with a 3.58 ERA and tied for the American League lead in shutouts (2). He has served as a pitching coach for the Philippines national team in the World Baseball Classic qualifier (2016), the Atlantic League’s Bridgeport Bluefish (2016), and the Atlanta Braves organization (2017-18). His coaching experience also includes a stint at the MLB Development Center in China (2015). He currently serves as the Florida Scouting Director for PBR, the organization that operates the MLB Draft The Crosscutters are still looking for more game-day staff. format will replace traditional extra innings in 2022 as part of the MLB Draft League’s emphasis on pitcher health and arm safety. Before the game, the home team manager will decide to play either offense or defense in the event of an extra-inning game. If the game is tied at the end of regulation, the teams will play an additional half-inning to determine a winner. The inning will begin with a runner – the third out from the previous inning – on first base and the scheduled hitter at the plate. The team starting the additional half-inning on offense will have three outs to score a run and win the game. If they fail to score a run, the winner is the team that began the half-inning on defense. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: The MLB Draft League’s first- and second-half champions will meet in a winner-takeall MLB Draft League Championship Game on Sept. 6, hosted by the firsthalf winner. If the same team wins both halves, then the second-place finisher of the season’s second half will qualify for the Championship Game. SUBSTITUTIONS: Free substitutions will be allowed at each manager’s discretion to provide playing opportunities for more players. SEVEN-INNING GAMES: All Tuesday games during the first half of the

brushes, and all. If you’re looking to minimize, consider palette-based or stacked makeup that takes up less space and will be less likely to break and/or spill as liquid foundation. Plus, a compact will have various shades, and you can utilize the same palette for concealer, blushes, bronzing, and shadow. Whether your go for a fullface or no-makeup makeup, pick a beauty look best suited for the entire trip and stick to it. Yes, it’s nice to have variety, but it’s unnecessary. One shade of lipstick and one eyeliner will suffice on most trips. If you are eschewing makeup altogether, you’ll still need basics. Besides the aforementioned soap, deodorant, and toothpaste, I’d also add to that list SPF, moisturizer, and a luxury item of your choice. How can a “luxury item” be a basic, you may ask? Well, it’s always nice to have a bit of pampering on vacation. It need not be luxurious within itself but a product that gives you a sense of indulgence. That could be perfume, a sheet mask, an essential oil, or a sample size of an expensive hand cream. Or it could be a comfort item like a terry towel in your favorite color. Beyond the basics, other items to write down on your packing list are: – Tweezers. – Small scissors. – A thread and needle. – A round hairbrush for styling. – A straight comb for detangling.

O PEN

CLO SED

– A face wash. – Q-tips. – Flushable cleaning wipes. – Obviously, if you wear glasses or contacts, cases and solution would also be included. Lastly, but certainly not least, are medications. Whether prescription or over the counter, packing your pills is essential. Traveling with small children, some gotos that I pack are Pepto Bismol, melatonin, and Children’s Tylenol; plus, we always have an epi-pen for our eldest’s nut allergy. If motion sickness is of concern, there’s Dramamine and, of course, daily vitamins. For myself, I always have Zicam, Excedrin, Midol, probiotics, and Ashwagandha tablets because your girl gets stressed, especially on airplanes. Speaking of stress, I always worry I’ll forget something when packing or that I had the chance to pack a product but decided against it and now regret it. In the end, besides prescribed medications, most toiletries can be purchased either on the road or at your final destination. Does Rite Aid carry the Glossier perfecting skin tint I use, or Dr. Brandt’s Skincare Do Not Age Time Defying Cream? No, but they have Dr. Scholl’s wart remover and Maybelline, so while you may not be able to find the exact lotions, potions, and cosmetics you normally use, you can find something that’ll work for you for the trip. If you are in dire straits, use the Clarendon filter on your phone for posting those vacay selfies.

County Hall Corner: School Shootings: Action and Reaction By Larry Stout

T

here are times that even the best of writers are at a loss for words. The incredible tragedy that took place at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which took the lives of nineteen children and two adult teachers, is simply unfathomable to comprehend. What causes an individual to not only want to take their own life but sacrifice innocent children in the process speaks of the worst depravity imaginable. The reaction to this catastrophe, especially among government officials, has been mixed. In fact, it was literally mixed when Governor Greg Abbott was conducting a press conference expressing the state’s grief and got interrupted by Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke confronting him on gun control laws. There is a time for everything, but that was not the time to discuss second amendment issues, and O’Rourke was unceremoniously escorted out of the auditorium. Former President Barack Obama tweeted, “As we grieve the children of Uvalde today, we should take time to recognize that two years have passed

since the murder of George Floyd under the knee of a police officer. His killing stays with us all to this day, especially those who loved him.” Quite a number of pundits, even those who admire Obama, questioned how appropriate or even logical it was to tie together George Floyd, a criminal who died in police custody, with nineteen elementary school students killed in their classroom by a teenage maniac. What do they have in common? These actions are simply provided as a backdrop to appreciate the initiative taken by Lycoming County Commissioner Scott Metzger — who has a long-standing participation with Little League. He opened the Commissioner’s meeting on

COUNTY HALL Thursday, May 26th, by sharing a conversation he had with Jesus (JJ) Suarez, President of the Little League Chapter in Uvalde. When Metzger spoke with him on the phone to express our area’s condolences, he related how those in Lycoming County have also experienced the terrible pain of loss, which took place on July 7th, 1996, when the TWA Flight 800 out of New York exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 230 onboard. Included among that number were sixteen students and five chaperones from the Montoursville Area High School French Club that were headed to Paris. Suarez and Metzger talked on the phone for some time, and it seemed from the way Commissioner Metzger described it, Suarez needed an understanding ear for what he was experiencing. Ironically, the man had just been voted onto the Uvalde School Board of Trustees. He is a lifetime resident that worked with the Uvalde Police Department, particularly focusing his career around helping youth. He became a certified Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officer working closely with students and faculty at Flores Elementary School (two miles from Robb Elementary), and also took local at-risk youth to the Police Activities League (P.A.L.) camps. He was

so good at law enforcement, he eventually left the police department to pursue a career in education as a full-time criminal justice instructor at Southwest Texas Junior College, eventually becoming Department Chair of Criminal Justice. But it is obvious in the public information about JJ Suarez, the man who cares greatly about kids is also passionate about Little League Baseball. Even though he didn’t have any children of his own, he loved coaching, and even while at the police department, he encouraged his fellow officers to coach the t-ball team (truly a challenge, even for police officers). Suarez has been an active coach and board member of the Uvalde Little League for nearly twenty years. Thus, it was a tremendous honor for him to have the President of the Board of the Lycoming County Commissioners, home of International Little League itself, calling him and asking how our community could help those in Uvalde. Metzger noted that the man was quite touched by the gesture and was not exactly sure what practical help they needed at the present time. Suarez was simply thankful for the call and concern — and perhaps that might be the best help of all to a public official that must help a citizenry that is in shock and will be suffering for many, many years to come.

Then I’m going to wrestle at the USMC 16U and Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, in July. Dave: I’m sure, like everything, traveling and competing are expensive these days. How would someone sponsor you if they are interested? you have a strategy going in? Marissa: No, I didn’t really have a strategy. I was just going to go out to have fun and wrestle. I knew the girl I was wrestling was very tough. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the result I was hoping for. If I won that match, I would have wrestled at the world championships, but second place still earned a spot on Team USA, and I get to wrestle at the Pan American Games in Argentina. I’m very excited about the opportunity. Dave: You qualified for the national team. What’s next? Marissa: I will first head to Colorado Springs for training camp at the Olym-

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to the lack of nutrient flow.

they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. Figure 2: The blood vessels will grow back around the nerve much like a plant’s roots grow when watered.

IF YOU HAVEN’T SUSTAINED AT LEAST 85% NERVE DAMAGE THERE IS HOPE!

NERVE PAIN EVALUATION FOR ONLY $47 TO THE FIRST 17 CALLERS! YOUR EVALUATION WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING TO DETERMINE IF YOUR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY SYMPTOMS CAN BE TREATED • A Thermal Image Scan to see your nerve damage • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being, where we will listen ...really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination.

• Where indicated, a full set of specialized x-rays • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray fi ndings so we can start mapping out your plan to minimize your neuropathy symptoms. • Your first treatment to help bring you relief!

“I had been suffering from numbness in my feet along with pain and extreme weakness in my legs. After the consultation I decided to commit. I am really glad I did. Health and mobility is worth everything. Get your life back!” - Lynn K - Milton, PA. “I’ve tried every cream and product on the market and Twin Hills is the only treatment that worked.” - Greg G - Danville, PA

As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the Figure 1: When these very small blood vessels nerves to not get the nutrients to continue become diseased they begin to shrivel up and to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” the nerves begin to degenerate.

Andrea’s Home Cookin…

Happy Hunting

W

She can take care of flowers like ow, I blinked, and no one’s business! In fact, a year it’s June. Unbelievago, a friend of mine was going able. I’m finding to visit Africa and needed someout the truth about one to watch her plants. She had “the older you get, the faster time so many of them that she asked goes.” I don’t know where the anyone to help if they were able. I weeks or months go. I am feelvolunteered thinking, “How hard ing guilty lately for how busy we can it be to keep a houseplant?” I have been. Do you ever feel like mean, my ferns always look topyour weeks just constantly fill up notch outside all summer. After so fast? Andrea all, they are my favorite because I love to cook, and I love to have McElroy it’s something I can keep alive and people over for dinner. Not this look stunning all summer long winter, but last winter, we had different friends or family over once a week- because they don’t need 24/7 round-theend during the slower months. It was so clock care. Well, this house plant gave me a run for nice to visit with people who we didn’t get to see very often. This winter, we had too my money. I even bought a little spritzer much going on to do it each week like the to spritz that baby, and after two weeks, winter before. (Between two surgeries, a it started turning yellow, and the leaves full bedroom remodel and going to school, were wilting as if the plant was trying to it’s no wonder.) I’m Andrea of Andrea’s say, “Someone help me!” I blamed our well Country Home Cookin and have hardly water and asked myself why, for the love been able to have our parents over for a of God, did I volunteer to plant sit when I know I don’t have a green thumb. I put that meal lately. I had a brunch for Mother’s Day, which sad plant the size of a small tree into our was so nice, and it makes me wish I could car and drove it over to my mother-in-law’s do it more often. We just get so caught up to save this puppy before my friend came in everyday life, and it never seems to slow home a few weeks later. This was a feisty little plant, even my mothdown. The Mother’s Day brunch was so nice, er-in-law said it wasn’t easy, and she is Mrs. though. We had such a wonderful time, and Green Thumb! The plant looked OK when I couldn’t wait to hand out gifts. My moth- it went back home, and my sweet mommaer-in-law, Marlene McElroy Rook, has the most gorgeous flowers you have ever seen. See COOKIN on Page 26

COOKIN

in-law did all she could for it. I told my friend I would buy her a new one, but she said she would have it back to life in no time and just really appreciated me taking care of her plant. (Hey, at least it wasn’t dead! Haha) So for Mother’s Day, I got my momma-in-law a gift card to the Potting Bench over in South Williamsport. Guys, I spoke of this in my column last fall, but I am giving them a shout-out again. Their flowers are gorgeous, the ice cream is to die for, and the family who owns it is so sweet. In fact, tonight we are going for ice cream after my daughter’s dance recital practice! I’m going to get me a Fluffernutter sundae. It’s my fav. Vanilla ice cream with drizzled peanut butter and marshmallow topped with crumbs of graham cracker and Nutter Butter cookies on top with whipped topping. Anyone need a drool cup!? Go check them out! Amazing business in our area. I was excited that the gift card could be used for not only flowers but ice cream, frozen drinks, and even cute crafts. They have it all! Long story short, for one of my momma’s gifts, the week of Mother’s Day, I talked to her about going shopping and teased her about going to the Harley shop because I have a pile of gift cards for Horsepower from Christmas. She laughed. I told her maybe they would have a shirt that says MOMMA OF BIKERS since my brother and I both ride. She said she would love that, but what she really wanted was a Momma of Andrea’s Country Home Cookin shirt.

A light bulb went off, and Mother’s Day was in four days. I quickly called up my bestie, Lindsay Mertes, because she makes all kinds of stuff with her Cricut. I went down to Hobby Lobby the next day to get a shirt, dropped it off to Linds, and had a shirt that evening. This adorable light pink shirt that reads ‘Momma of Andrea’s Country Home Cookin.’ When she opened it, you knew she was excited. She couldn’t wait to wear it proudly, but I asked her to wait. Why? Well, I thought it would be fun for a little contest. My momma hasn’t worn it out in public yet, but the very FIRST person to see her in it and say something will get one of my cookbooks and one of my cookie jars! Hint: A few of her hot spots are Sam’s Club, Aldi, Wegmans, thrift shops, and anywhere that sells a good coke slushy. (Tania Lee, I know you are cracking up at the coke slush remark right now!) Momma loves her coke slushies, and she is super friendly. Happy hunting and good luck! Frozen Strawberry Lemonade Ingredients: • 1 bag of frozen strawberries • 2 Tbsp. of frozen lemonade concentrate • 2 cups of sprite • 2 Tbsp. sugar Directions: Add ingredients to a blender and mix well. Serve in a glass, garnish with a slice of lemon, take a sip and feel instantly cold this summer!

This Week’s LION: Abby McCoy – Champion in Life By Larry Stout

I

once had the pleasure of meeting James Irwin, one of the twelve men who walked on the moon. Irwin noted that, like his fellow moon-walking astronauts, he also suffered from depression years afterward. What happened was that they hit their peak in their late thirties and early forties. Think about it — after you have walked on the moon, what else could you do in life that could compare to that? Others, such as Olympic champions who peak early in life, go through the same motivation withdrawal. When you reach the summit, it seems the only place to go afterward is down. It takes tremendous discipline and hard work to achieve the heights of becoming a pioneer or champion, especially as a young person, but it is harder still to keep those kinds of accomplishments in perspective. This is why Abby McCoy was one of the most astonishing individuals I have had the pleasure to interview and get to know. During her college career at Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia, Abby has twice been a national equestrian champion — as a freshman and just recently as a senior. This accomplishment is the rarest of the rare. Abby McCoy has been winning competitions for her riding skills since age 11.

Forgive the pun, but most folks would be riding high with those triumphs. Yet, as proud as she is of her achievements in the tournament arena, Abby saw these feats as an era in her life that was coming to a close. More important to her was that she had received her undergraduate degree in physics with a minor in mathematics, not only graduating with honors but also the only female in her class with this degree and only one of three graduates who received their diploma from the president of the college. Abby McCoy is the daughter of Ed Mc-

LION

Coy, chief adult probation officer for Lycoming County, and Joy Reynolds McCoy, who just recently stepped down after thirteen years as a judge for the Lycoming County Court of Common Pleas. Growing up with such influential parents and a brother four years older who was a champion athlete would seem to not leave much oxygen in the room for Abby. Providentially, at age four, she discovered the joy of horse riding, and it turned out that she was pretty good at it. There is a complex dynamic between horse and rider in equestrian competition. Horses have instincts, and Abby discovered early on that all horses seemed to like

her. She also discovered that her physical skill set matched the full-body workout that competitive riding takes. And the young lady that would later enjoy studying engineering and data analysis also had the intellect to know how to navigate the challenges of championship competitions. When I asked Abby about aspiring to greater equestrian heights, perhaps even the Olympics, she quickly dismissed the idea. She stated that her competitive riding was over and was happy with her accomplishments. In fact, she credits her horse, Gatwick, as the primary key to her success. Though it is almost unheard

of with horses, Gatwick sort of ‘grew up’ with Abby. Through the years, Abby and Gatwick went from 2’ jumps to 3’ jumps and then 3’3’’ hurdles competitions. Abby is rather modest in this regard because it takes great control and positioning from the rider to win championships, no matter how great the horse. Abby is extremely thankful for her upbringing and the opportunities she has had to travel and work with gifted individuals. Yet, at the same time, she has never let anyone else ‘define’ her. She knows she has a high-profile family, but she decided early on to prove the stereotypes wrong. She wanted to carve out her own personality and goals. Anyone who challenges herself as much as Abby would face more

than her share of disappointments, but she also steadied her mind to never let negativity get to her. Abby is now preparing for her graduate studies and will eventually seek an occupation in the science field, probably research. Very, very few 22-year-olds have the stability and maturity of this young lady. If I were around for another couple of decades, it would not surprise me if Abby McCoy would make a great discovery or some breakthrough in science. She has more than knowledge in her head; she uses her intellect to solve tough problems and also has the grit to not let difficulties stop her. Abby McCoy is a special kind of champion, one who has not yet begun to reach her peak.

ouncilman Charles E. Cole, superintendent of finance for city council at a council meeting held this morning, introduced a resolution providing for an appropriation of $50 be given to the Repasz Band to aid in recovering the loss in yesterday’s disastrous fire at the Lycoming Opera House in which the well-known local band had its quarters. The resolution was introduced in executive session and received no opposition. The resolution is a follows: “Whereas, in the Lycoming Opera House fire the music, in-

struments and belongings of the famous Repasz Band were completely destroyed inflicting a well-nigh irreparable loss. “And whereas the history of this well-known musical organization is so closely allied to the city’s growth and progress it seems proper that city authorities should take some action on account of this misfortune. “Therefore, Be It Resolved by the Council of Williamsport that we deplore the misfortune that has befallen the Repasz Band and the sum of $50 is hereby appropriated from the contingency fund to aid in the recouping the losses which have been so unfortunately sustained.”

he Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), Lycoming County Chapter (LCC), presents two yearly educational grants. Any professional or paraprofessional from Lycoming County public schools may apply for these grants. The applications are sent to each district yearly. On Tuesday, May 3rd, two Educational Grants were presented to Loyalsock High School Music Directors Ryan Bulgarelli, David Tini, and a team of kindergarten teachers from Schick Elementary Traci Friant, Maggie Brooks, Kelly Campbell, Kim Hoffman, Becky Kaiser, and Tatianna Beard. Each group received a check for $350 to be applied to the projects presented in their application. Bulgarelli and Tini described their project, saying, “As part of our programming for our spring 2022 concerts at Loyalsock, we have been presented with a unique opportunity to perform a piece of music that

will have a profound impact on our students. Without question, the current events involving the invasion of Ukraine have had an impact on our society, community, and students. Processing events like this is difficult for everyone, but especially so for young students. One of the many ways in which we as humans begin to process these events is through music. Brian Balmages, a renowned band composer, has written a piece of music entitled “Kyiv, 2022” as a tribute to those who are fighting to defend the Ukraine capital and a means for all of us to express our emotions regarding the conflict.” Balmages stated, “we hope that this piece of music will help our students spark thoughtful conversations about humanity, history, culture, and compassion.” The grant money will be used to purchase the necessary sheet music for this event and a possible zoom meeting by the students with the compos-

Run, Hide, Fight By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz

“G

et ready to die!” Those chilling words echoed through an elementary school classroom in Texas. And die they did. After several agonizing minutes, 21 individuals were dead. No, not dead — slaughtered. As if the situation wasn’t horrific enough, 19 of those individuals killed last Tuesday were children averaging around the age of 10 years old. Why? This wasn’t a battleground in a war or

a disgruntled office worker seeking revenge for being fired. This was a classroom of innocent little kids with their entire lives in front of them. Nineteen lives cut short. Tons of dreams, hopes, and laughter were silenced. And the lives of 19 families forever changed. The parents will bury their dead, memorial services will be held, the school, perhaps, will be torn down or at least remodeled, and monuments will be erected around the town. Unfortunately, the shootings will continue — maybe in New York State,

Florida, North Dakota, or right here in Pennsylvania. School shootings and mass shootings have become too common in this country. Ten people were killed at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, just the other week. You go to the grocery store; you end up getting shot. Why? Somehow this must stop, and something needs to be figured out and things done about it. I believe this issue is a combination of several things, including bullying, mental health, and allowing 18-year-olds to buy assault weapons. Until the day comes, if it ever comes, when shootings at schools, grocery stores, and offices are just a bad mem-

ory of the past, one should be prepared for any unexpected situation. Here are some survival tips from around the internet in case you ever find yourself in a similar situation with an active shooter. Remember the following order run, hide, fight. At the first sign, sound or suspicion of activity, run as fast as possible. Get outside the building and find a safe spot. If exiting the building is not an option, find an indoor place to hide, such as a restroom, under desks, behind furniture, and stairwells. No matter where you seek safety, it’s imperative just to lay low, cover your head and be quiet.

they’ve gotten this far, they’re not stopping. Try to have something on your person that could be used as a makeshift weapon at any time. Things such as a pen to stab somebody, pepper spray to blind them, keys to scratch their face, or even your cell phone chucked at a person’s head could give you just enough time to escape. Don’t try to capture the situation on video. Your main concern is your life not getting a video. When confronting somebody in a physical altercation, there are certain areas you want to aim for: the face, the eyes, the groin, and the stomach.

If there is no chance even to hide, the last resort is to fight. And fight means using whatever method and resources you have available. Things such as fire extinguishers, computer keyboards, glass bottles, heavy objects, canes, umbrellas, heavy books, and even your shoe. Anything that’s solid and has some weight to it as a last resort can be used as a weapon. Other things include ceramic coffee mugs, your belt, and heavy glassware. Also, always make sure you know your surroundings. Where are the closest exits, nearest windows, or areas to hide? Don’t try to reason with the shooter. If

ow that your garden is planted, you may notice that you have some extra room in your beds or unused pots. These are great spaces to plant herbs and annual flowers. Herbs are a great addition to any garden. Basil, rosemary, mint, dill, and oregano are a few that I enjoy growing every year. Most herbs are considered peren-

nials, meaning they will return in the spring. I prefer to grow herbs in flowerpots or use a designated raised bed if one is still empty. Some herbs can be very invasive and take over a garden in a short amount of time. Some examples include mint, oregano, thyme, and sage. If you would like to incorporate invasive herbs into your garden space, first place them in a pot and

then bury the pot halfway into the ground. This will keep the root system contained. Herbs such as basil and dill are two that normally die off after the Charlie Gizenski first frost. I place my basil and dill directly alongside my vegetable plants to help deter unwanted insects. Annual flowers, meaning they will die and not return in the spring, can also be added to your garden. Flowers can also deter unwanted insects from your vegetables by drawing insects to the flower instead of your vegetables. Examples include petunias, marigolds, and dahlias. Fragrant flowers, such as Four o’clock, Moonflowers, and Heliotropes, not only smell great, but they also look pretty alongside your vegetable plants. One last addition that I include every year is a water feature. Just a

small, fountain-like piece can provide many benefits. I enjoy watching the different wildlife visit the water for a drink. I see a lot of birds, butterflies, and frogs. My garden is surrounded by a fence, but occasionally I see a squirrel or chipmunk. I clean the outside of the feature a few times throughout the season, especially when the temperature is consistently high, but otherwise, it does not require much attention other than adding water. The sound of trickling water is soothing and adds to the peaceful feeling I get when I am gardening. There are lots of simple DIY water features you can create. Most can be crafted from supplies you may already have; you only need to purchase a pump. Depending on the size, they start as low as $20. It is not too late to visit your local greenhouse to purchase flowers and herbs. Greenhouses are still fully stocked, so please visit and support your local farmers and businesses. Happy gardening.

Faith Conversations…

Knuckles Up or Knuckle Down?

T

his article marks the seventh anniversary of the Faith Conversations column appearing in the Webb Weekly. I confess, writing a column in a weekly paper was never on my bucket list. When Jim Webb first asked me to consider doing it, I turned

him down flat. Why? Because writing publicly on a topic as divisive as religion is a sure-fire way to offend many people and open yourself to unwanted criticism and drama. I wanted no part of it. It Tim took Jim about six months Hartzell of friendly badgering before I finally relented.

much. You are a dear partner with me in the gospel of Jesus Christ. In case you didn’t read my debut article that appeared the first week in June of 2015, I am posting it again to remind us of why faith conversations are so important. Who knows? Maybe God will give us seven more years to keep the faith conversations going. That is my hope. Here is that first article in its entirety: How can we know that God exSee FAITH on Page 4 2

Friends, I am so glad Jim didn’t give up. Writing in the Weekly has been a joy for many reasons, but the most important one is you. I know I will never have the opportunity to meet the vast majority of Weekly readers, but the ones I have met have been so very gracious. Your encouragement has kept me writing through some very difficult times. Your kind words and sweet faces are often in my mind as I sit at my keyboard. You have been an inspiration. Thank you so

In this weekly column, I would like to invite you on a journey of faith conversations. You need to know that I have no desire to argue or debate. Those forms of dialogue usually involve an effort

ists? What a great question to begin a conversation! Of course, if it’s truly a conversation, then we must also consider the opposite question, “How do we know God doesn’t exist?” Conversation is defined as an informal talk with somebody, especially about opinions, ideas, feelings, or everyday matters. I treasure conversation. It is the reason I rarely eat alone. I love to

is true (knuckles up), or should I be seeking to listen, to understand, and grow (knuckles down)? I believe that debate and argument, the fight for truth, require knuckles up. And as you get to know me, you’ll discover that there are certain topics I am fully prepared to come at knuckles up – and swinging! I’m not afraid to fight. But as I get older and gain a greater life perspective, I find that there are some things worth fighting for but few things worth

There is a time and place for those forms of communication, but in this column, I want us to converse – to listen, to share, and to grow in our understanding. In framing the question, he asked, “Do I approach this topic knuckles up or knuckles down?” In other words, should I be ready to fight for what

The Roving Sportsman… The Greatest of All Father’s Day Gift By Jon Pries

ou can go to your local outdoor store and come up with numerous gift ideas for Dad on His Day. You can go online and find hundreds of great gift ideas to make His Day a little brighter. And, you can browse through the many catalogs you or he receives in the mail to come up with some great ideas. But, frankly, any such gift pales in comparison with what I am about to suggest. Store-bought items or those things you can obtain online or through catalogs are OK, and they may even be something that Dad really needs or wants. And, I am sure they would be appreciated by Pop. After all, Dads are great people, and you want to treat him right – you only ever get one Dad! But, what is the one thing that is valued above all other things? Time. Yes, your time. And here is what I mean. You give him a regular gift, he opens it up, he likes it, he admires it, and he appreciates it. And, from time to time, as he uses that gift, he remembers that you gave it to him, and he is thankful for your thoughtfulness. But what if you could spend a day or two with Dad doing something he loves to do, and you cre-

ate a memory that will last a lifetime and strengthen the great bond you already have? If your Dad is into knitting or sewing, or his passion is music or the arts, I’ll let you figure out what to do. But, if he is an outdoorsman and loves outdoor sports, here are some suggestions: Is he a fisherman? If so, put together a trip for just the two of you to New York State to enjoy some of their salmon, brown trout, or steelhead fishing either on a charter boat or on one of the numerous streams that provide outstanding fishing when the fish are headed upstream to spawn. Locally, fishing guides are available to ensure that you and Dad have a successful day on one or two of our numerous trout streams or on a drift fishing trip on the mighty Susquehanna. If your goal is to have a day or two with just the two of you, then consider spending time on one of our many picturesque mountain trout streams in pursuit of native brook trout. You could plan to stay overnight and camp out to extend the time together. Ah, can’t you just smell the wonderful aroma of freshly caught trout frying in a cast-iron skillet with butter and then adding a dash of salt and pepper for taste? men’s property will allow you to spend the day shooting handguns, rifles, or shotguns. If you want to shoot a round or two of sporting clays, then Thunder Ridge above Wellsboro is your closest opportunity. You might even consider signing up the two of you for some handgun training at the National Range and Armory at 531 Washington Boulevard in Williamsport. If you recall the song “Cat’s in the cradle,” sung by Harry Chapin, you will remember how time seems to slip away from a well-intentioned father and son, who, in the end, wish they had spent more time together. Take the opportunity this coming Father’s Day to make sure you do just that!

If hunting is his passion, then line up a day or two of hunting this coming fall. Whether it is for small game, deer, bear, or turkeys, spending a couple of days with Dad will allow you to create some wonderful memories that both of you can relive over the years to come. Camping out overnight could be a pleasant addition to the trip, and what tastes better than a venison backstrap cooked over a wood fire? While you could arrange a trip together out west for elk or mule deer, your trip doesn’t have to be that extensive or expensive. The point is to spend time together – just the two of you. If shooting is his forte, then a trip up the Loyalsock to the Consolidated Sports-

Even the slightest twitch of the bobber should elicit a hook set. Crappies are often very willing to take your offering this time of year, and large numbers can sometimes be caught, so I suggest being frugal; ten decent-sized crappies provide a good meal for two people. Also, there are different regulations on different lakes, so make sure you know what the legal take is and the legal size before you keep any crappies.

surrounding COVID. When this year’s schedule came out, we still have the same type of schedule. Similar to our start/end dates, I think certain things with the schedule are experimental. I would anticipate we will see some changes in that going forward. We would rather see the other teams a little bit more than we do now.” The games themselves will also feature some additional experimental tinkering. “We are excited about our new extra-inning rule, and there are other summer leagues that are experimenting with other game-ending concepts. This year in games that are tied at the end of nine-innings, the Draft League will be using a sudden death half-inning tie-breaker. At the home plate meeting before the game, the home team

gets to choose whether it prefers to play offense or defense in sudden death. The team that is on offense starts with a runner on first base. If they score, they win the game. If the defense prevents them from scoring, that team will win the game. It’s a half-inning, that’s it. “Last year, we had games that ended it ties, and that’s not something anybody wants. We knew that was going to change this year. We’re happy about it and think it will be exciting. A lot of fans leave after nine innings, no matter what, and never see the final outcome. Only about 10% of the fans stick around for extra innings. Now, when you know the end is, at the most, only three outs away, fans will stick around to see the outcome. We’d like people to do that. the good thing is we got rid of ties.” Sinicropi went on to explain the league will also employ some seven-inning games on Tuesdays. “Those seven-inning games will only be used the first half of the season and will affect three of our home games. This rule is only for the pitching staff stuff. Realizing these are amateur players, during the first half of the season, they want to protect pitchers’ arms. Believe it or not, two innings once a week makes a difference. We let the baseball people handle that, but it does help each team’s pitching staff.” Baseball traditionalists may shudder with the implementation of these changes, but the best tradition of all — baseball is returning to Bowman Field for all of us to enjoy.

explained. “Last year, we started before Memorial Day, and that was too early. I think we could still start our season another week later to give additional time for the various college post-season tournaments to conclude. The league is still experimenting with that ‘sweet spot,’ so to speak, when the most college players would be available to join us.” As it was last year, the Crosscutters’ schedule is extremely unbalanced, with the team playing 56 games, equaling 70% of its season, against State College and Trenton. “Quite frankly, that is not something we are in favor of. We do want to play State College more than anybody else,” added Gabe. “Last year, that unbalanced schedule was put together because of travel restrictions

olden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr made an impassioned plea to take stronger action this week. He had very little to say about basketball in a press conference a few hours after the incident. Nineteen innocent children and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. ENOUGH.” Several others praised Kerr’s pregame remarks. Warrior’s guard Damion Lee also took the stand. “It’s terrible. So sad,” Lee explained. “Obviously, we all saw Steve’s pregame press conference. Those are my exact same sentiments. Many of ours. We need to do something. We need reform. Guns should not be so accessible. I mean. It is easier to buy an assault rifle today than it is to find baby formula. That is just unbelievable.” Look, folks, regardless of where you stand, I hope we can all agree that this is

getting out of hand. I am not saying that I have the answers. Neither do my friends. Don’t get me started on the local politicians. We need to come together. We need to do something. What occurred in Texas this past week was a tragedy. And this sort of thing will, unfortunately, continue to happen. I am not asking for more metal detectors or armored guards. I am simply hoping for some bipartisan reform. Change is desperately needed. I hate the mornings after. When you learn the names and meet the faces. Nineteen children. Two teachers. They all were innocent and beautiful people. They all had stories. Gone way too soon. This one hurts because I am a parent. So are you.

I agree with Coach Kerr. When are we going to do something? I am not a gun guy, and I am not trying to take them away. It is called common sense. Every other democracy makes an effort to keep high-profile weapons out of the hands of dangerous or their young people. Why can’t we? We can also do this without curtailing sport and protection. Salvador Ramos killed those innocent people. He was 18 years old. Ramos legally purchased two AR-style rifles at a local federal firearms dealer on May 17 and May 20. He also purchased 375 rounds of ammunition on May 18. Again. Salvador Ramos was 18. That really bothers me. More love. Less hate. Cheers.
