Grads and Giveaways

A

Webb Weekly tip of the cap and congratulations to all our recent high school graduates. What a special time in a young person’s life when they take that walk with their fellow classmates and celebrate an achievement that began with their very first days of school. I always enjoy looking at the pictures that chronicle a graduate’s journey. I especially like when they include the baby and preschool photos, and you can see that little boy or girl grow into that young man or lady right before your eyes. I also enjoy the funny pictures that are thrown in; you know, the ones that the parents and grandparents get a kick out of but might slightly embarrass the graduate. It is truly amazing how fast these kids grow up in today’s world. The Class of 2022 has faced many challenges and should be commended on how they responded. They could take nothing for granted during their high school years, from whether the school would even be open to implementing online classes and the alwayspresent concerns of the cancelation or postponement of athletics and extracurricular activities. And I hate to even bring up the mask issue. It has been a blessing for the Class of

2022 that their final year has been as close to normal as possible and that all scheduled events have been shared with their classmates and in front of family, friends, fans, and spectators. Remember, it wasn’t that long ago when even the celebration of commencement was in question. The education, development, and opportunities of high school are so very important in getting an individual ready for the next step of their life. Whether they’re attending college, trade school, joining the workforce, or enlisting in the military, this time frame should help prepare and provide direction and guidance. These are also days when our students are able to participate in activities that may end when their high school experience does. So, losing out on these activities for whatever reason are truly lost opportunities of a lifetime. My advice to the Class of 2022 — take advantage of, and work hard at, the opportunities that you have created at this point of your journey. If you are ever unsure where your next step may take you, keep working hard to create a new opportunity. As you are beginning a new chapter in your life, make it what you want in the name of good. If you ever reach a point when you want to change

direction, the key is to be out there working to create opportunity, not waiting for it to happen. When I was a student, my favorite words were, schools out for summer! As a matter of fact, that still brings a smile to my Jim Webb, Jr. face. Please keep your eyes peeled and pay extra close attention to the kids as they enjoy the sunshine, and all the summer days and nights have to offer. That gets me to what some of you were looking for last week, some great summer fun giveaways for both the young and young at heart. The Williamsport Crosscutters have opened their season at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. We are proud to partner with the organization, and all that’s going on at the old ballpark can be found in Cutter’s Carvings within our pages during the MLB Draft League season. Gabe, Rhashan, and the gang are guaranteed to make the night a whole lot of fun. If you would like to enjoy a great night of smiles and baseball at Bowman, be one of the first four folks that call or text me at 570-337-0755 and win our Webb Weekly Grand Slam Package. This includes 4 Box seats to an upcoming Crosscutters game of your choosing and a hot dog and beverage at the ballpark.

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to the lack of nutrient flow.

they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms.

As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the Figure 1: When these very small blood vessels nerves to not get the nutrients to continue become diseased they begin to shrivel up and to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” the nerves begin to degenerate.

I’m sure I can probably even get Rhashan to have his picture taken with you. Please just let me know why you’re calling; I get forgetful. My next giveaway is only for kids; however, a parent or guardian must call to win. If you have a young athlete that would like to attend Coach Ron Insinger’s CI’s Basketball Camp or Coach Marilouise Mazzante’s Fast Maz Speed and Agility Summer Camp, call or text me to win your choice! There are four sessions of CI’s camp to choose from; see page 54 Fast Maz’s camps begin on June 15th details on page 30. Both are legendary coaches in their own right that make summer camp a lot of fun. And lastly, don’t forget about our Webb Weekly Great American Cookout, which can be found on page 46 Just fill out the entry form and mail it or drop it off at my office and win the Summer Prize Pack Giveaway. A great 5-Burner Grill from Elery Nau Hardware, and yes, it is assembled. A $50 gift card to Rupert’s Specialty Meats and to wash down whatever you throw on the grill, a $50 gift card to Frosty’s Beverage. If you’re the lucky winner, we will deliver it and even fire it up if you would like, as we provide a tank of gas. Well, that got me hungry to throw something on the grill. Again, congrats to the Class of 2022. Let’s all be safe out there. God Bless America.

Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. Figure 2: The blood vessels will grow back around the nerve much like a plant’s roots grow when watered.

Adopt a Shelter Kitty

G

iven our cover story, it seems appropriate to use my space this week to celebrate ‘Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.’ We all know that there are plenty of cats in shelters that could use good homes. More than ever, the kitties need our help. Not only are thousands of newborn kittens joining the millions of cats already in shelters, but a lack of foot traffic, funding, and supplies at many shelters struggling to maintain operations during COVID, is further threatening these beautiful babies and their hopes to find a forever home. If you have the chance, please visit LAPS during their open house this weekend. Maybe you’ll find your newest family member. I had the pleasure of checking out their new facility recently and whew! is it beautiful. It is bright, and welcoming and I know that the kitty cats that are staying are getting all the love and care that they need. But there is nothing that will replace them finding their furever home. However, before you decide to adopt, please keep a few things in mind. These tips are courtesy of American Humane. If you’re thinking about adopting a cat, consider taking home two. Cats require exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction. Two cats can provide this for each other. Plus they’ll provide more benefits to you. Cats’ purring has been shown to soothe humans as well as themselves — and they have an uncanny ability to just make you smile. A great place to start your search is online. Sites

roviding a safe, humane home for cats is the primary aim of the Lycoming Animal Protection Society (LAPS). To aid this venture, they have opened a new shelter at 630 Wildwood Boulevard in Williamsport. To highlight this new facility for the public, they will be holding an open house there on Sunday, June 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “I am thrilled with our new building and accommodations for our cats. LAPS has been a part of the local community for a long time. Now, with the help of our volunteers, our members, and all those in the general public who have donated time, energy, resources, and financial assistance, we can continue to serve the public — and “our” cats — for years to come in a permanent facility that is truly state of the art,” Maryanne Rossello, LAPS President, told Webb Weekly. Lycoming Animal Protection Society, Inc., also known as LAPS, is a no-kill feline shelter and adoption center which serves Lycoming County and surrounding counties. Their non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization helps provide housing, food, and medical care for homeless and surrendered cats and works toward finding them permanent loving homes through their adoption program. At any given time, LAPS has an average of approximately 85 resident cats. In 2017, LAPS received a tremendously

generous bequest from Barbara S. Bressler, a fellow cat lover. The Board of Directors determined that the best use of those funds would be to purchase their own facility, securing the future of their organization. Our search for our new facility started slowly. At the same time, LAPS volunteers learned what zoning was required in communities in and around Williamsport. They looked at buildings that might meet those specifications and be a suitable size and layout to meet the needs of an animal shelter. The search had to be intensified when they were notified that the building in which LAPS was housed would be demolished. Fortunately, a building was located at 630 Wildwood Boulevard, Williamsport, which seemed to be an ideal size and layout and met the zoning requirements (with one approved variance.) LAPS needed a great deal of help from local supporters, who stepped up and volunteered to open their homes to their resident cats while they renovated their new building. Because these renovations occurred during the pandemic, numerous delays in getting building materials and supplies slowed the process. What was expected to be a six-month renovation ended up taking almost two years. The building had previously been a flooring showroom and warehouse. Some of what needed to be changed: moving structural supports that would have been directly in walkways, leveling a 14-inch drop between

balancing that with creating a functional yet pleasant work environment for the cats’ volunteer caregivers.” Kerri Reardon, Volunteer Cat Caregiver and Membership Chairperson said, “Finally, our shelter’s physical appearance is a representation equal to the dedication and love our volunteers and supporters have always shown for the cause.” Nancy Steil, Volunteer Cat Caregiver and Member of the Board of Directors, declared, “I love the new shelter! It’s bright and airy, and there’s a happy vibe to the building.” Gwen Uber, Volunteer Cat Caregiver, and Vice President said, “A huge thank you to the wonderful fosters who welcomed our thencurrent feline residents into their homes while our new facility was renovated. There was no way we could have done this without them.” And finally, Cyndi Mussina, Volunteer Cat Caregiver and Treasurer stated, “One of the things that impresses me the most about LAPS is that the cats have rooms to live in, instead of small pens or crates. Our new building has many rooms with windows, and each window has a wide windowsill for the cats to sit on. In each room, there are cat trees that were built especially for LAPS, toddler beds, or other furniture for the cats to either view their world from or hide in or under, depending on the cat. LAPS has cats with all different personalities: playful, loving, mischievous, shy, relaxed; you name it! It’s an adventure getting to know them. Each week, when I go in to work my shift, I learn new things about even our long-term residents. I joke that I fall in love with a different cat every week.”

two sections of the building, removing various outbuildings, updating plumbing, heating, and lighting, adding air filtration, windows, security, and a storage area. Once they had the basics, then came the challenge of designing the cat enclosures to keep their residents secure while making maintenance and everyday care as easy as possible for their volunteers. As the expense of all those renovations was mounting, LAPS was once again blessed with another exceptionally generous bequest from long-time supporter Ruth W. Lamade, which made it possible to outfit the shelter for the long-term. They were able to put in heavy-duty flooring, a clean-up area with an oversized sink, water-resistant laminate cabinets, and quartz countertops, among other amenities. They have 32 enclosures or rooms of various sizes where the cats reside. Some can accommodate 3-4 cats, while others are “single cat” rooms. They have added two isolation rooms where new residents stay until medically cleared to move into the general population, a treatment room where they can medicate, test, or groom their cats as needed, and a visitation room furnished with comfy furniture where potential adopters can interact with cats in a home-like environment. LAPS has a dedicated corps of volunteers that help out. These volunteers feel strongly about what they do to help these cats. Sheri Yingling is a Volunteer Cat Caregiver and Recording Secretary. She stated, “An abundance of thought and planning went into making the new shelter as comfortable as possible for the resident cats while keeping their safety and well-being in mind and

tep aside New Hampshire and Iowa; your days of hogging up all the electoral oxygen in the country may be seeing an end. Pennsylvania has become the true battlefield state in the country. California and New York are solidly blue, Texas and Florida are bright red, and our very own Keystone State, the fifth most populated in the country, is ripe to go in either direction. That means that candidates from both parties are going to have to show that they have “Pennsylvania Pride” and can bring their party those super valuable nineteen electoral college votes in the November 2024 election. A little history will help grasp the seismic shift that is taking place right now. In the presidential elections from 2000 to 2012, the Democratic candidate won more votes than the Republican. In the 2016 race, the Republicans finally broke the pattern, with Donald Trump receiving 2,970,733 votes to Hillary Clinton’s 2,926,441, roughly a half a percent difference. And the official vote count for Pennsylvania in 2020 had Joe Biden receiving 3,458,229 to 3,377,674 for Trump. This was barely a .2 percent difference. But something has been happening since 2020. This 50/50 seesaw between the Re-

publicans and Democrats has shifted. Fifteen years ago, the Democrats had a 1.5 million registered voter advantage over the Republicans. This is why they knew that they would win if they could just get their constituency to the voting booth. The ‘no-questions-asked’ absentee ballot initiative was an ideal tool for their party. They put their eggs in this basket because they knew they had more votes on their side. However, that was then, and this is now. In the recent 2022 primary election, the Republicans cast 138,831 more ballots for their governor candidate than the Democrats. A recent Reuters article noted, “Nowhere is the Republican advance in voter registration greater than in Pennsylvania, where so far this year Republicans have

say in their child’s education, and severe restraints on energy supplies — that had been a boon to the state’s economy not so long ago — have all disturbed the most loyal of Democratic Party members. All this has resulted in their party having the smallest margin over the Republicans in two decades. National polling shows there has been a shift in recent years in voter preferences. They have become more and more disillusioned with big government answers. They now show a preference toward less government involvement in everyday life and an economy featuring capitalism and free enterprise to give individuals more power to solve their own problems. Truth be told, the Republican Party has recognized but has not exactly championed these preferences. But, these concerns definitely fly in the face of the traditional Democratic Party focus on bureaucrats running federal government initiatives designed to solve all of our country’s social and economic problems. The outcome of the presidential election in November of 2024 will largely be determined in our very own Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I would not be surprised that as Pennsylvania goes, so goes the country. And if I am right, there will be a caravan of presidential wannabes knocking at our county’s door in the not-so-distant future.

converted four Democrats for every Republican who has switched to the Democratic Party, according to data published by Pennsylvania’s Department of State. That’s on track to be the highest conversion rate in at least a decade and well above 2016, when Republicans took the White House, House of Representatives, and Senate.” That 1.5 million voter advantage that the Democratic Party enjoyed in 2008 has been cut down today to less than half a million today. Even the stronghold of Philadelphia is seeing a shift. Just this year, 1,315 Democrats in Philadelphia have filed to change their party registration to Republican, more than four times the number of Republicans making the opposite switch. Many surveys reveal that many of these voters are reluctantly leaving their party, but they view it as their party has left them. In addition to inflation and other economic issues, a growing number of Pennsylvania voters have become disillusioned with the Democratic Party over its perceived shift leftward on cultural matters. Dr. Terry Madonna, a highly regarded political science professor at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, has noted that the shift toward the Republicans is not just inflation but the frustration in a wide number of issues. Local Physician First in Area to Offer Innovative Direct Primary Care By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

here has been a lot of discussion throughout the nation about delivering adequate health care services to patients in the system. Much of this involves billing and waiting to receive those services. Medical professionals are starting to think outside the box, and one of the ways they are doing this is through a concept called “Direct Patient Care.” One local physician, Dr. Pamela Herrington, M.D., has become the first doctor to bring this innovation to this area. Many people complain about the medical world, having to wait weeks for an appointment, waiting long times in the exam room, then feeling rushed out the door. Often, they can’t get into their own doctor but have to see one of their partners. When people call the office, they feel there are barriers to contacting their doctor. Why can’t it be simpler than this? People have heard of Concierge medicine, which seems to be just for the rich and famous. But there is a more affordable version that eliminates the middleman of insurance and administrators. Herrington has opened Pine Creek Family Medicine, the first Direct Primary Care practice in the area. Webb Weekly interviewed Dr. Herrington about this new and exciting development she is bringing to this area.

Q: How did you get involved in DPC (Direct Primary Care) medicine? A: I have been a Family Practice physician in traditional medical practices for nearly 30 years. When I decided to start my own independent practice, I knew it would be difficult to navigate the complicated world of medical insurance without a team of experts. Meanwhile, I had heard about Direct Primary Care, so I started investigating. I realized it was a breath of fresh air for myself and many of my patients. Q: How so? What is DPC? A: DPC (Direct Primary Care) is a membership model for health care. Patients pay a monthly fee, and in exchange, they get unlimited office visits and great access to their doctor. We don’t bill insurance for any of our services. Most DPC doctors limit their practices to about 300 to 500 patients, rather than the typical panel of about 2,000 patients, which allows us time to spend with our patients, working together. DPC doctors tend to see 5 to 10 patients per day rather than the usual 20 patients per day. Because we have fewer patients, we can usually see someone the same day or the next day if needed. And patients see their own doctor each time. Q: Is this a new model of medical care? A: Well, when you think of it, this is how medicine used to be delivered. We tease

about doctors being paid in chickens, but it was basically a “fee for service” in which people paid for their care. There weren’t insurance companies dictating what doctors needed to do in order to get paid. DPC practices have been around for about 20 years, and there are at least 1,500 of these practices across the nation. Q: What does it cost? A: DPC practices each set their own prices, which are listed on their websites. Many offer blood work and dispense medicines at markedly reduced costs. For example, a Lipid panel might cost $25 at one place, yet our members pay only $2.54 through the lab we use. Q: What services are included for your members? A: We do routine physicals, sick visits, video visits, and whatever is needed. My favorite thing is procedures, such as mole removal, suturing, or removing skin tags. Those are all no-cost for members. I also enjoy working with people to improve their lifestyles and lose weight, and I’ve frequently taken people off medications. With this model, I have time to spend with my patients, working with them. Q: Will you see patients who are not your members? A: Overall, this is a membership-based model, but there are some services, such as my diet counseling, that I offer for non-members at a self-pay price. I also offer Botox, dermal fillers, and others at a fee. These are listed on our website.

Q: Do people still need insurance? A: Yes, it’s important that people maintain some insurance for ER visits, referrals, and emergency care. But the care through our office is not dictated by insurance. Q: What if someone has great insurance? A: DPC is not for everyone. People can weigh their costs and whether they would benefit from being a member. For many who have high deductibles or are uninsured, this is an excellent option for saving money on personalized health care. Q: Do you have examples of people who have benefited from this type of health care? A: There are several examples, but one, in particular, comes to mind. We saved someone an ER visit. We saw him the same day for chest discomfort, examined him, did an EKG, and were able to reassure him. His cost? Nothing additional since it was included in his monthly membership. He also has had low-cost labs through our office, as well as coming for my low-carb diet discussion with family members. Q: How can people learn more? A: Our web page www.PineCreekFamMed.com has a lot of information. Or people can call 570-873-3440 with questions or to schedule a “Meet and Greet” time to discuss if we’re a good fit for you. And all are welcome at our Open House on Saturday, June 18th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pine Creek Family Medicine, 345 E. Central Ave in Avis, PA: Refreshments will be served.

“I agree 100% with a past statement from Daniel A. That is why I am trying to convert my blighted property into a building that will benefit the community. li Miller, aged 35 and his band of 35 gypsies occupying five large autos, were taken into custody earlier today by members of the police department after a local garage man had reported the theft of $325 in money from him. The automobile dealer was busy on a long-distance telephone call when four of the women appeared at his place of business and wanted to tell his fortune and do a dance for him. In the few minutes the gypsies were in the place, the man alleges that he lost $325 to pickpockets. Chief of Police Louis Russie and Captain J.D. Andrews, and Motorcycle officers T.R. Logan and H.C. Beck were soon on the trail of the nomads. One carload was

found on Third Street. Three motor cars were located on Rose Street and the fifth at Cemetery and Rose streets. They were directed to police headquarters. The party was composed of 10 men, 10 women and 15 children. They used three touring cars and two closed cars. Each car was loaded with beds, clothing and tents. All the gypsies were placed in the detention cells with the exception of one woman, who complained of being ill. The tags on the cars were from the District of Columbia and Indiana. Shortly after arriving at police headquarters, the gypsies secured Michael Maggio as attorney. Chief Russie allowed the gypsies to go if they returned the $325 stolen and got out of the city. Late this afternoon they were still trying to raise enough money to make good the theft.

Mini-Golf Tournament to Benefit Christians Helping Honduras

T

he South Williamsport United Methodist Church is sending another mission team to Happy World School in San Marcos de Colon, Honduras. They will be going in July of this year and in January of 2023. Happy World School has 60+ students and struggles to pay its bills. The classrooms are drab, unpainted cinder blocks. The team plans to paint the classroom walls to brighten up the kids’ learning experience and organize and distribute care packages to the students’ homes. They will also minister to the staff and children of the school and survey future mission opportunities. The group is hoping to also expand the school beyond 6th grade by adding 7th-9th grade and a Vo-Tech program. During the July trip, they will be upgrading the playground equipment to make it safer for the kids. They, however, could use some help from the community. All donations received will be placed in the South Williamsport UMC Honduras Mission Fund. The Mission Fund will be used to support the mission trips in July and January. These students are from the poorest

barrio in the region. They receive excellent, free Christian education, uniforms, and nutritious meals, because of support from our local community members. Another way to support their mission is by participating in their upcoming Mini-Golf Tournament. This Saturday, July 11th, they will host a mini-golf tournament at Hoopla’s Family Fun Zone and Longshot’s Bar & Grill outside the Lycoming Mall. Like traditional golf tournaments, it will be four-person teams and a shotgun start. There will be four flights; the first flight is at 9:00 a.m. Other flights will follow at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and noon. You can register on the day of the tournament. Cost is $50/team or $15 for an individual. They are also offering prizes for Best Team Score, First & Second Best Individual Score, and Holes-in-One. For more information, please contact Pete Heilman at 570-980-4400. If you want to donate, you can make checks payable to South Williamsport United Methodist Church and mail them to 409 Main St., South Williamsport, PA 17702.

Andrea’s Home Cookin…

Summer Heat

I

t’s safe to say summer is officially here. These temps have been hot already, and we aren’t even to July and August yet — but I’m ready. I’ve been really looking forward to summer this year, though, which is saying something. I love all the activities of summer, just not the humidity. With my new legs, I’ll be able to wear shorts that I haven’t worn in; I bet twenty years? I wore them for the first time on Memorial Day up to our river lot. My hubby took a double-take when I walked in front of him for the first time wearing them. I honestly don’t think this man has seen me in shorts much. Maybe the first few years we dated,

but it was a thing of the past after that. (We’ve been together twenty-three years.) The chunkier I got, the more I hated my legs. Honestly, I don’t ever remember a time I loved my legs. I always had thicker thighs, even when I was a skinny mini, and that bothered me. So, I didn’t wear shorts much, but not many knew I was insecure about my legs back then. I have always worn confidence well. (I look back on pictures of me, and I was nuts for not loving my long legs with some meat on those thighs!! Was I crazy!?) But now I own those babies and love the thicker thighs. I have no desire for the stick legs that I once

to make me feel cooler this summer. Jeans and yoga pants on 95° days — it’s no wonder my upper lip sweat got out of control. Now that I got a taste of the breeze on my knees, it was a lovely feeling, and I think it may help me enjoy the summer more, beating the heat. I don’t have ugly veins to make me feel insecure anymore. Anyone reading this who is struggling with the insecurity of veins, Dr. Stefan at Evangelical in Lewisburg is just amazing. He is an incredible man who truly cares about his patients and brings legs back to life again. He will change your life! You know what else helps you beat the summer heat besides shorts? Meals that don’t take forever to cook in the summer. I

longed for. I slap those babies together in my new shorts and say, “A little bit of thunder and a little bit of lightning, baby!” Just as proud as can be! After two varicose veins surgeries, the third one in office, and losing weight, I’ve never been Andrea prouder of my legs. They McElroy still have a ways to go but look so much better already. esus promised, “I will give you the Keys of the Kingdom.” The do’s and don’ts of the Bible are not just rules and regulations, but keys. The do’s open doors of blessing, the don’ts simply keep doors locked that would lead to trouble. Our founding fathers saw these keys in the scriptures, and saw that they would open the doors of blessing over a people to become a great nation. It is sad to see our nation pushing aside the scriptures which in turn are closing doors of blessing and opening doors of confusion and chaos. All the keys in the Kingdom of God work when we mix them with faith. Faith is simply having confidence in God and His integrity. Then one would have enough confidence to take steps of obedience. Confidence in knowing that God is not a man that He should lie and He will do what He said He will do (Numbers 23:19). Our obedient faith then releases God to work miracles on our behalf. Peter was the first to use the keys of the Kingdom in launching the first church. A

don’t know what it is in the summer, but I just don’t cook like I do in the cooler months. Anyone else feel the same way!? My momma and I were literally just talking about this, and she feels the same way too. The crockpot is my best friend during those hot months, right along with the griddle and an open fire to cook on. I love quick and easy meals. I don’t mind my oven being on occasionally, since we have air conditioning, but I don’t want it on for hours slow cooking a roast, that’s for sure. That’s why this recipe is so perfect. It pairs perfectly with a refreshing crisp, cold salad and some sweet watermelon. It’s not a heavy meal and doesn’t take much at all to throw together. In less than thirty minutes, you can make and bake. That’s what I’m talking about! I also love that they are less than two hundred and fifty calories a pizza! I use the Thomas multigrain English muffins. They were absolutely delicious. So, this summer, wear the shorts to beat the heat and pick simpler meals to make your life a little easier. Enjoy all that summer has to offer. Sit on the porch and listen to the crickets, put your feet in a cool creek, treat yourself to some delicious ice cream, run through a sprinkler, watch the lightning bugs light up the night sky, and spend all the time you can with friends and family doing fun activities that beat that summer heat. Proudly slap those thighs together and say, “A little bit of thunder and a little bit of lightning, baby!” Happy Summer!

THE GIFT OF KEYS

multitude had gathered in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. There was such a commotion when God sent the Holy Spirit. A large crowd gathered outside the upper room and Peter began preaching Jesus. When the people heard the message of the Kingdom, they wanted to know what they should do. Peter then shared the keys, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38 says, that as many as believed and they were baptized, entered God’s Kingdom. There are many keys in God’s kingdom; love, joy, peace here and now for your life. There are keys to a great family and a wonderful marriage. For a successful church and a great nation. Jesus said the keys of the kingdom are like a treasure hid in a field, and it takes a hunger to find the treasure and faith to make it work for you. Here is a key we have used often: “Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify me.” (Psalms 50:15). Whether personally, for your mar-

riage, or family, the keys work. Another key that has worked for us in the Church: “Is any sick among you? Let Him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith will save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up (James 5:14-15). We must remember to mix each key with faith and the key will work. Ask and you shall receive, seek and ye shall find.” (Luke 11:10), are keys. Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) A mathematician and philosopher noted: “Truth is so obscure in these times and falsehood so established that unless we love the truth, we cannot know it.” Jesus said, “We should strive to enter the straight gate, for many will seek to enter but will not be able.” Why is it hard for many to enter? The answer is found in Isaiah 55: 8-9. God said, His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways. As heaven is higher than the earth so are God’s thoughts higher than our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways. Never the less His way is perfect.

Muffin Pizza Ingredients: • Pack of English Muffins • Your favorite pizza sauce • Mozzarella cheese • Sharp cheese • Chopped Pepperoni (and any of your favorite pizza toppings) • Parm cheese • Italian seasoning Directions: Cut muffins in half and place on a cookie sheet. Spread on sauce, then sprinkle mozzarella and sharp cheese. Next, place on the pepperoni. Top with parm cheese and Italian seasoning. Bake at 400° for about 15 minutes or until desired crispiness.

Another major key to the Kingdom is that: God resists the proud but He gives grace to the humble, and the meek He will teach His ways. (1 Peter 5:5; Psalms 25:9) When Jesus was talking about “striving” He wasn’t talking about earning your way to heaven. Jesus would make the sacrifice for our sins. Once we receive Jesus then there is a striving to reap all the benefits afforded us in the Kingdom. We think nothing about striving to become a doctor, lawyer or a great inventor. How much more should we strive for spiritual things which benefit us now and please our Heavenly Father who made the sacrifice for us. Search the scriptures yourself and God will help you discover keys to life. Our pastor, Matthew Holcomb announced that our church is changing its name from The Door Fellowship to River Valley Church. We are excited to see where God is about to take us, as we continue to reach out to our community. Join us as we discover how to use the keys God has given us for our good and God’s glory.

he ominous sky opened up just moments before the Lycoming County Veterans Council was set to begin its annual Memorial Day Service at Williamsport’s West Fourth Street Veterans Memorial Park. Undaunted, the large crowd that had gathered remained in place with umbrellas and rain gear at the ready. They were there to honor and pay tribute to the memory of those members of our Armed Forces who had made the ultimate sacrifice. The serenity of the moment made it seem like the raindrops falling upon them were more like tears falling from above. The departed above, and those gathered below had every reason to shed tears. This year’s Memorial Day observances came on the heels of despicable acts of bigotry, hatred, and despair as disturbed young men with guns in their hands snuffed out the lives of so many innocent individuals in the recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. Ten were killed and three others injured in Buffalo at a Tops Supermarket, while 19 students and two teachers were gunned down in their classroom at an Uvalde elementary school. As has been the case in the all-too-many senseless massacres across America in the

past few years, the immediate aftermath has been the same. Tears are shed, prayers are offered, makeshift memorials dot the killing sites, and people plead ‘no more’ and ‘this has got to stop.’ Yet sadly, no reasonable solutions have ever resulted. Instead, copy-cat deranged societal outcasts seem emboldened to plan and carry out similar acts of violence. I listened in stunned silence as Christ Episcopal Church Reverend Kyle Murphy recited the propensity of these senseless acts to his parishioners in a Sunday sermon. “In 2017, there were 18 mass shootings; in 2018, there were 19; 2019, there were 29; 2020, 17; 2021, there were 25. In 2022, there have been 33 — twenty-seven of them in schools — and the year is only half over. One in four of these shooting victims in this country have been children. “What are we doing about this hell we seem to be living in? Yes, we can pray, dear God; we need to pray — and pray hard, but we also must do something because, in short, we are doing nothing. I think we are caught in a cycle. Shock, Facebook postings, moments of silence, followed by total silence…well, at least until the next one happens. Then it is repeat cycle.”

DO SOMETHING We must do something. As the Reverend continued his sermon, my mind flashed back to the day before and the program at the Veterans Park remembrance. There, guest speaker retired Lt. General Earl B. Hailston, a USMC Viet Nam combat veteran, recounted the chilling heroism of two young Marines who, in a time of peril, did do something. The Marines, one of whom had just arrived in Iraq and another who would be going home in a few days, were assigned guard duty at the gates of a military compound where two battalions of American soldiers were sleeping. Lt. General Hailston posed this question to the gathering. What would you do if you had six seconds to live? He spoke of the gallantry of these two Marines as a suicide bomber driving a truck appeared to approach the gate at high speed just 60 yards away. The Marines stood at their post for the last six seconds of their lives, firing at the oncoming vehicle. They shot the driver, who then exploded his deadly cargo within yards of the compound entrance. Both Marines were killed, but the lives of hundreds of soldiers sleeping in the compound’s barracks were saved. It took but six seconds. Those ten shoppers in the Buffalo market and the 19 students and two teachers in the Uvalde school had no idea they had

but 6 seconds to live when the shooting rang out. Instead of finding someone to blame, let’s do something! – “If you believe it’s a gun issue, do something about it. – If you believe it’s a mental health issue, do something about it. – If you believe it’s a morality issue, do something about it. – If you believe it’s a political issue, do something about it.” – If you believe it’s a lack of community, not enough love, not enough prayer, do something about it. Rightly so, the American people are sickened by these senseless killings. But solutions to the problem cannot be heaped upon ridding the Constitution of the Second Amendment. The Amendment was carved by our forefathers 231 years ago in 1791. It simply states: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to bear arms, shall not be infringed.” For over two hundred years, the words were profound until the disturbed madness of recent decades brought about measures of Amendment hysteria. Think about it — most of the noise coming from politicians and celebrity do-gooders is from those very people who are surrounded by gun-toting bodyguards

PA. STATE REPRESENTATIVE FRANK RYAN (101ST DIST.) INTRODUCED SCHOOL PROPERTY TAX ELIMINATION ACT -HB13. For nearly two decades legislators have stated that property taxes are one of their most consistent complaints from constituents.

Asking the working-age population to shoulder the entire tax burden is not fair. Rep. Ryan looked for a way to balance the cost of funding schools fairly across all age cohorts while reducing overall cost in a constitutionally valid way. It exempts Social Security (and equivalent) incomes from income tax. By doing so, seniors would pay a more reasonable share, based on state demographics, toward eliminating school property taxes. Seniors who make up 20% of the population will pay 20% of the total tax burden. (SUT/PIT), while ages 0-64 make up the rest, a significant majority of the revenue. Currently, seniors pay 32% of homestead School District Property Taxes. There is no easy or perfect way to replace $16B of taxes without asking everyone to pitch in a fair share. HB13 corrects the existing unfairness so that 80% of state funding comes from those under the age of 65, which makes up 80% of Pennsylvania’s population. WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM? HB13 would utilize the Sales and Use Tax (SUT) and personal income tax (PIT) to replace school property taxes. The SUT would increase from 6 to 8%; clothing and food would be subject to a 2% SUT (except WIC & SNAP ITEMS). Personal income tax (PIT) would be raised from 3.07% to 4.92%. Currently PIT is applicable to only those working. Under HB13 the PIT would be expanded to include SOME retirement income. These revenue sources are sufficient to fully fund schools.

WILL THE LOCAL MONEY GO TO HARRISBURG? Revenue associated with the tax increases will be implemented and collected locally rather than at the state level. By implementing the tax increases at the local level all revenue collected is sent directly to the LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS! There is NO redistribution of funding by money first going to Harrisburg, then to the School Districts. For more information, please visit the volunteer groups below that support fully funding schools through HB13 School Property Tax Elimination Act along with a newly released website that includes a PERSONAL IMPACT ESTIMATOR. Respectfully submitted, Robert Kistler-Bipartisans for School District Property Tax Shift (FB) Ron Snell-MARCH ON HARRISBURG! (FB) Henry Rothrock & Robert Kistler PTCC-PENNSYLVANIA TAXPAYERS CYBER COALITION (FB) Henry Rothrock www.PTCC-us.org Ryan Pertusio www.NoProp.tax

www.webbweekly.com

WON’T THE INCOME AND SALES TAXES NEED ANNUAL RATE INCREASES LIKE PROPERTY TAX DOES NOW? Historically, the revenue from both SUT and PIT increases due to annual wage gains and increased cost of products and services. These natural increases have funded our state budget for years with no increases needed. SUT rate has not risen in more than 50 years. PIT has risen only 0.77% in 50 years; the last increase was in 2004. It is important to remember that raising either the PIT or the SUT would still require statewide legislative action. That is much harder to do than raising School Property Taxes!

Call 570-326-9322

Under HB13, 100% of School Property Tax replacement funding comes from increasing Sales and Use Tax (SUT) and Personal Income Tax (PIT). 1. Renters make up 40% of Pennsylvania residents. HB13 includes a tenant rent reduction equal to their portion of the landlord’s School District Property Tax (estimated at 10-13% reduction in rent based on statewide averages) 2. Current school debt will be paid for by HB13 3. All money collected will flow directly to local School Districts, eliminating possible misuse by Harrisburg 4. HB13 does not expand the existing set of goods and services taxed, but does add food (WIC & SNAP purchases excluded), and clothing at a local 2% rate 5. The statewide cost of caring for seniors increases annually, creating a two-fold problem: (1) Young people leaving Pennsylvania for better employment opportunities and lower taxes, and (2) the over-65 population is increasing while working-class population is decreasing.

DO SOMETHING paid to protect them. Do those politicians and celebrity types want the guns taken away from those protecting them? That is a question first-graders could answer correctly. But clearly, something has to be done. Law-abiding citizens have the right to bear arms, but at least to this writer, there needs to be: – Comprehensive background checks for anyone purchasing a gun. – A reasonable waiting period must be established. – Gun safety courses must be passed by first-time gun owners (similar to the type of training required to obtain a driver’s license) – Assault-type weapons must not be sold to private citizens. – Limits on ammunition sales must be established. As Reverend Murphy concluded his message, he told of a cliff-climber faced with some perilous danger. The climber was repelling down a rocky cliff when he saw he was headed for a very large hole in the rock. Panicked, he froze, fearing he was about to die. From the ground, the instructor tried calming him with words of encouragement. The climber didn’t want to hear any of the advice being given. But then he heard the words that empowered him to negotiate the rest of the

cliff without incident; “If you can’t get out of it, get into it.” Bone-deep, he knew there was no way out of his dangerous situation except to go deeper into it to bring himself to safety. Reverend Murphy then finished his message. “If you can’t get out of it, get into it. Bone deep, we know this truth. We know we need to get into this. A solution to this problem for a lot of reasons isn’t easy for us in this country, but we seem to think that because we do not have the perfect solution, we can’t have any solution. The truth is this is a multi-faceted problem, so we need a multi-faceted response.” The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people, but the silence over that by the good people.” The good people among us greatly outnumber the bad. But the good people feel they do not have the power, voice, or solution to solve a problem at hand. We all have unique skills. However limited they may be, these skills need to be directed at the bad people and the bad circumstances that have fueled the evil within to inflict this senseless rage against the vulnerable among us. For us and our nation to collectively get out of this mess, we’ve got to get into it. If not us, then who? If not now, then when?

The housing market crashed, and many people suffered terribly as their life savings were wiped out. You probably weren’t aware of it, but such financial distress is a part of your life story. I grew up in the 1970s in the midst of soaring inflation, high-interest rates, and gas rationing — and now it’s happening again. The writer of Ecclesiastes declared, “What has been will be again; what has been done will be done again. There is nothing new under the sun.” You grew up in a world of mass shootings and metal detectors. I grew up in a world where schools were marked as nuclear fallout shelters. When you were seven, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee teamed up to devastate many communities in our valley. When I was eight, Hurricane Agnes did the same to

that thought. If you do, you risk entering a destructive state of mind called victimhood. People who live in victimhood blame everyone and everything else for their misery. Blame is how they justify laziness, destructive lifestyle choices, and bitterness. They say to themselves, “Had it not been for _________; they would have been happy and successful.” Living in a state of victimhood destroys their lives. In John 16:33, Jesus told His disciples, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus faced plenty of adversity, but He chose to be an overcomer. Graduate, He is calling on you to overcome adversity too. With His

You have a choice to make. You can choose to be a victim or an overcomer. That choice will determine the trajectory of the rest of your life. Choose victimhood, and your life will always be defined by the pain of your past. Your offenders will keep you imprisoned in bitterness and self-pity. also learned how to eject and how to survive an ocean crash. And on top of all that, each actor got cinematic schooling as well — since they themselves often had to operate the many cockpit cameras. (These multiple angles, incidentally, resulted in a whopping 800 hours of total footage; this was then edited down to the movie’s eventual 131-minute run time.) Despite all the practical effects, however, none of the performers actually piloted the jets; except for small arms, it is officially illegal for civilians to control any mechanism owned by the Department of Defense. So those of us whose jaws are still hanging open after “Maverick’s” action — we want to know who was flying the plane in those incredible scenes. No doubt the lead actor himself would tell me if I asked. Talk to me, Cruise.

“Danger Zone” does show up briefly at the outset. It’s worth noting that in the first film, producers tested more than 300 extant songs to run behind the opening credits before finally asking soundtrack producer Giorgio Moroder to pen something original. Kenny Loggins, still hot after his 1984 title hit for “Footloose,” had a smash with Moroder’s resulting composition — but Loggins was actually their third choice to perform it; Toto and Corey Hart were offered the song but couldn’t — or wouldn’t — do it. Cruise’s more significant stipulation was to shoot the aerial combat scenes with the actual actors in the cockpits, including Tom himself, who turns 60 in July — and who was the only one able to manage this feat in the original film. For “Maverick,” Cruise personally designed a three-month boot camp to accustom costars to the G-forces of supersonic flight. They

This type of activity would include exercise at a high level of intensity for brief periods of time. In this case, your breathing would be significantly heavier than when resting, you probably cannot hold a conversation, and your heart rate would be very elevated. In practical terms, this could translate to: If you want to get good at hiking, you need to go hiking. If I want to get good at push-ups, you should perform push-ups regularly. Before beginning any exercise program, assuming you are healthy, first consider what outcomes you want to achieve, then set realistic goals. Beyond goal setting, you will then need to consider the two basic concepts of Progressive Overload and SAID. “Practice” the type of activity you want to improve, whether it is strength training, walking, swimming, etc., or a combination of things. This will address the specific adaptation component of your exercise program. Then, over time, gradually make your program more challenging as you become more fit. Do NOT do the same exact thing every day. This does not mean you need to exercise in a random fashion without a plan. It just means that you need to add a few minutes here, a rep there, occasionally add some weight, or change up your routine over time.

41 • Webb Weekly June 8, 2022

so that it has a reason to adapt and become more fit. Another way to think about Progressive Overload is that it is your body’s way of adapting to its environment to improve your chances of survival. In the case of push-ups, you could change the style of push-ups, try different set and repetition schemes, add some sort of resistance, etc. This does not have to be every day, but there needs to be a general trend of increased difficulty. The second key principle in achieving and maintaining progress with your exercise program is the SAID Principle. While this principle has been debated to some degree in the past few years, it still has merit when it comes to a basic understanding of exercise programming. For example, if you want to improve your aerobic system, you generally need to exercise aerobically (with oxygen as a fuel source). This would be an activity that is of moderate intensity where you are breathing a little more heavily than when at rest, but you can still talk, and your heart rate is slightly elevated. (By the way, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends that you get 150-300 accumulated minutes of this type of activity each week.) If you want to improve your anaerobic systems, you need to train anaerobically (without oxygen as a fuel source).

Two Time Blues Music Awarded Texas Artist, Sue Foley, to Grace the Stage At the 2022 Billtown Blues Festival

B

illtown Blues Association organizers are coming down the home stretch after a year-long preparation for their signature event, the Billtown Blues Festival, now celebrating 32 years of the blues music art form. There will be no deviation from the event’s reputation of securing world-class nationally known performers, exposing those on the cusp, and providing a firstclass event to showcase treasured local and regional artists. “Always an interesting and diverse program,” “comfortable and relaxing,” “family-oriented,” and “quality and class” is common language used when describing this grandfather of nationally known blues festivals. This year’s event offers a long-standing tradition with Williamsport’s sweetheart organization, the Uptown Music Collective filling two spots in the lineup: kicking off on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Along the way, local and regional acts will prove once again the incredible talent within our reach. Coming to Billtown for the first time from Ithaca, NY, is Raedwald Howland-Bolton — a must-see purveyor of the bedrock of American blues. Ann Kerstetter will quickly take charge of the stage with her flamboyant delivery and

powerful vocals as she fires up the audience; for a Billtown favorite, the Billy Price Band, is coming to Billtown with his 7-piece Pittsburgh band. Saturday will feature local favorite the Becky Blue Blues Band, followed by the organization’s 2022 Solo/Duo Audition winner Neil Tapp and Audition band winner Chris LaRose & the Hex Highway Blues Band. Two festival returnees, hailing from Dublin, Georgia, EG Kight in trio format, and from Rhode Island, sax master Greg Piccolo in his 56th year of touring with his band Heavy Juice. Fresh from the 43rd annual Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Sue Foley won Best Traditional Blues Album for “Pinky’s Blues” and the Koko Taylor Award for Traditional Blues Female Artist, repeating her 2020 win in the same category! Sue was also been nominated for a Canadian Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year; and for five Maple Blues Awards (which are given out in June): Electric Act of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Recording/ Producer of the Year w/ Mike Flanigin and Guitarist of the Year. Sue Foley will be welcomed to the Williamsport Sun-Gazette stage on Saturday, June 11th. Also, on Saturday, staying with the BBA’s

And closing out the 32nd Annual Billtown Blues Festival on Sunday, June 12th from Wisconsin, the Cash Box Kings, known for taking Chicago blues to a whole new modern and refreshing level while not losing sight of the signature sound and groove. This will be a powerful closing set for this year’s festival. All detail is available at www.billtownblues. org. Fresh off a European tour and on the heels of their tribute to Hound Dog Taylor’s release, “Try It You Might Like It.” Having only been together since 2018, this young trio is way ahead of their time. Sunday after the Billtown Gospel Review, we welcome local acoustic soloist Chris Purcell. From Atlanta, Georgia, Veronika Jackson will deliver a unique blend of acoustic folk, blues, R&B, and gospel — beautifully supported by her clean and expressive Piedmont-style guitar playing. Strawberries By Charlie Gizenski

W

orking in the garden this week, I took notice of all the blossoms on my daughter’s strawberry plants we started three years ago. The best time to plant strawberries is early spring. Most plants will blossom in the first year but removing these first blossoms will give the plant more time to establish a better root system. As strawberry plants grow throughout the season, they will also produce runners, which I recommend removing. You can plant these runners to start a second

patch of strawberries. Strawberries are sold as root balls and are typically not in soil. These individual plants are called runners or stolons. Before planting, I find it is easier on the root system if you soak it in water for about 20 minutes. This allows the roots to become more flexible and prevents breaking when planting. You should begin by making a small mound of soil about the size of a softball. Next, turn the plant upside down and gently spread the roots apart until you find the center of the plant. Place the center of the plant on top of the mound of soil and spread the roots down the sides. Lightly place 4 inches of soil around

may turn a red/brown color. I cut my strawberry plants down to ground level and cover with a layer of compost during the second week of September. I water them every other day for two weeks to help create a strong root system for winter. You can also grow strawberries in hanging baskets. To keep these for next year, wrap the container in burlap, place straw on top, and store the wrapped basket in an unheated garage or shed. In early March, these planters can be placed outside and should produce strawberries. To transplant to your garden at the end of summer, simply take the plant out of the container, place it in the garden, and mulch around it for winter. Strawberry plants are perennial and can withstand difficult weather conditions. Happy gardening!

and on top of the roots. If planting in rows, it is best to space the plants 18-inches apart with 4-feet between the rows. Strawberries like lots of sun, so be sure to find a part of the garden that gets at least 8-hours of direct sun each day. Once the plants are established and begin to blossom, they will require lots of water, up to 1 to 2-inches per day. I use a soaker-hose, which keeps the ground wet and the berries dry as they ripen. You can also place straw under the plants to help prevent the berries from touching the ground. The straw will also help hold the moisture in the soil. Strawberries will begin to ripen when the air temperature reaches between 70 and 80° Fahrenheit. If the temperature rises above 80 degrees for an extended period, the plants may begin to drop blossoms, and the leaves

The Roving Sportsman… Gift Ideas for Father’s Day By Jon Pries

W

ith just over a week left until Dad’s Big Day rolls around, here are some suggestions that might bring a smile to his face on “His Day.” For most outdoor enthusiasts, there are so many gadgets and so much gear available, no matter what the specific sport or activity they enjoy. For a father or husband who is into shooting sports, be it handgun, rifle, or shotgun, a trip to the local sporting goods store will allow you to pick out a huge array of items that will fit any pocketbook. A box or two of shells for his favorite firearm, some gun cleaning supplies, or the actual purchase of that latest gun that he has been wanting will make him happy. If he is a hunter, then focus on whatever game he likes to pursue. For turkey hunters, there is a limitless supply of gear and gadgets to help him be successful on his next turkey outing. From box calls, slate calls, and mouth calls to special turkey loads for his favorite shotgun and even an upgrade of his camouflage outfit or turkey vest; there is a wide variety of items that will be appreciated. The same is true of those men who like to hunt pheasants, grouse, squirrels, deer, or bear — lots of “stuff ” available that is useful on their hunts. If you are trying to make a fisherman

happy, particularly a fly fisherman, you are really in luck. There is probably no other pursuit in the outdoors that has more gear and more gadgets available to up the game than fly fishing! Dry flies, wet flies, streamers, and nymphs, along with a multitude of fly lines, leaders, and equipment ranging from a few dollars to the-sky’s-the-limit can be purchased at most nearby sporting goods stores. If you want to give a gift that keeps on giving, consider signing dad up to join an organization that supports one of his favorite activities. The membership generally includes a monthly magazine so that he will be reminded month after month of your thoughtfulness. There is the NWTF (National Wild Turkey Federation), TU (Trout Unlimited), the RGS (Ruffed Grouse Society), Boone & Crockett Club, NRA (National Rifle Association), as well as many other great organizations that support any of his interests. For those of you who are simply in a quandary as to what to get, there is always the go-to gift certificate. It works great if you want Dad to have the final say on what color, shape, or size of an item he might want. But, in the end, there is only ONE thing that you can give him that will impress him the most. Sure, shopping for a gadget or some gear, wrapping it nicely, and watch-

Maybe even cook for him his favorite meal and do it over a grill or a wood fire, then spend time visiting and reminiscing about some of your favorite memories of times you have shared during hunting or fishing outings. Sharing your time would be the most appreciated and memorable thing you could do. Sure, gifts, gear, and gadgets are nice and will be appreciated, but spending time together and creating a wonderful memory together is really the best thing you could give a father on Father’s Day.

ing him open it on Sunday is nice, but it doesn’t come close to what I am about to suggest. What is the most valuable item or “thing” that we have? That anyone has, really? Is it our expensive automobile or truck? Or is it our home? Actually, it is neither of those nor any possession you may have. It is your time. Time is a finite quantity that once it’s gone, it’s gone. You cannot replace a minute of time like you can replace almost any possession you may have. So why not consider giving good old dad some of your most valuable possession — your time. Here’s what I mean. How nice would it be to fix your dad his favorite breakfast, then go on a hike to-

ike most folks out here in rural Pennsylvania, I enjoy seeing a wide variety of birds, and like many of us, I really get a kick out of spotting some of the “big guys” like hawks, ospreys, and especially eagles. Some hawks, like red-tailed hawks, are often seen perched in trees along major highways, where they wait to pick off some unsuspecting prey. If you want to get a look at an osprey, you might want to center your search near a lake, stream, or along the

Susquehanna River since fish is their main prey. Lakes, rivers, and streams are also great places to look for eagles, but I now frequently spot them in many other types of locations depending on where nesting sites are located. Last week my wife and I spent a few hours fishing on a fairly local lake, and during that time, we were constantly visited by two mature eagles and two immature eagles. One of the eagles perched only 30 yards

away on a dead tree and watched us fish for some time, probably hoping to nab a meal of his own. One large bird that I haven’t seen much of, if at all, however, is the one in the title of this piece — the peregrine falcon. One good reason for not seeing them is that until more recent times, they were pretty much non-existent. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, North America went from nearly 4,000 breeding pairs in the 1940s to 324 in 1975, and they disappeared from the eastern United States by 1960. One of the big reasons

for their disappearance was much the same as the eagle decline — DDT softening the eggs and destroying nesting sites. Today, however, thanks to the efforts of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the non-profit Peregrine Fund, peregrines have been “farmed” and then released at various locations across the state. Because of these efforts, peregrines have been removed from the threatened or endangered listing here in Pennsylvania. These new efforts are obviously paying off since in 2011, there were 32 nesting pairs, and in

do peregrines feed on in the city locations? Answer — starlings and pigeons. Keep an eye out for the peregrine in the right places; remember that it could be a cliff, a tall building, or a bridge. Look for the grayish bird on the back and topside of wings with a black hood that extends down over the eyes. While they are no longer on the endangered list, they are still protected; the fine for harming a peregrine falcon is $2,500.

2021, 73 nesting pairs were reported. I began to focus more attention on peregrine falcons this past year mainly because I had to; let me explain. The Pennsylvania Game Commission contacted me and asked me to produce the June cover of Pennsylvania Game News magazine, something I’ve been doing as a wildlife artist for quite a few years. My research showed that peregrines preferred nesting at cliff sites, some of which were located along rivers like the Susquehanna and its tributaries. I immediately homed in on the steep rock cliff at the small park located in Picture Rocks — that became my background for the soaring peregrine. Of course, as I tried to learn more about these interesting birds, I came across some other interesting facts. Peregrine falcons have pointed wingtips making them very fast and agile while in flight. Peregrines mainly feed on other birds, and they can dive at speeds of up to 200 mph. Since the replanting of peregrines began in Pennsylvania, new sites have been sought out; now, not only are cliff sites being utilized but tall buildings and bridges have been producing, including structures in the cities of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and even Williamsport. participate in round-table discussions and make their recommendations to the Little League International Board of Directors regarding potential rule changes. Hughes offered his observations pertaining to challenges Little League will be discussing. “One of the challenges Little League faces is Travel Ball. Travel Ball is sucking some of the best talents out of the local leagues, which often makes it tough for leagues to come up with a sufficient number of kids to have a program. There is also the reality of so many alternative activities available to kids today. It also seems like people are traveling and vacationing more than they used to. The bottom line is that there is an awful lot more going on in the world today that offers competition to playing Little League Baseball and softball.” Among the various topics to be discussed,

perhaps none will have a bigger impact on the current operation of local Little Leagues than a proposed boundary change revision. Local League Boundaries were established to create a community-based program while maintaining competitive balance. Over time, the definition of a community has changed. During the past two years, the International Charter Committee has processed more than 4,083 out-of-boundary waiver requests, proving families desire more flexibility to select a program they feel is best for their family. Consequently, the following proposal will be presented and reviewed by the Congress attendees: “Proposal – Any player, regardless of age, that is registering in the Little League program for the first time is eligible to register in any Little League program. The player registration sys-

tem would require: – All players will register through a central registration system, confirming league participation. – Players will not be required to provide proof of residency or school enrollment. – League will be responsible for verifying league age. Any player that elects to switch leagues will require a release from the league they last participated. Once released, the player will be eligible to participate in a new league with redshirt eligibility, followed by full eligibility for the duration of the player’s career with Charter Committee approval.” For long-time Little League volunteers, that is a whole new can of worms possibly being opened. But as any fisherman knows, you can’t catch many fish without baiting the hook.

was never exposed to fly fishing growing up. Sure, I tried it several times, but the purist ideology never stuck. It can be extremely frustrating, and I have zero confidence. I quit fifteen times and went back to my spinning rods. But COVID changed everything. I started with YouTube and made a few calls. I simply wanted to accomplish one task that I had never done. I used this opportunity to finally learn at home. I took half of Trump’s money and purchased a brand-new setup. I was determined to finally catch a damn fish on a fly rod. We are now three years into the pandemic, and I am starting to figure it out. My friends

have been great with this new challenge. They continue to be very supportive. Many of the purists have congratulated me on my successes. I am now a plain front bug chucking enthusiast that has fly fishing decals and stickers. I even know the lingo. I have been on the water quite a bit. OK. Just about every day since I retired. The fishing has been spectacular. Most of the time, you can find me in the backyard on Lycoming Creek. I will continue to throw bugs at trout for a few more weeks. Then I will make the switch to smallmouth bass. We could definitely use some rain, but the water is grand. It depends on the time of day,

but I am finding some hungry fish. The Blue Winged Olives are hot in the morning. The Slate Drakes and a few Sulphurs are coming off in the evenings. Catching a trout on a dry fly is the ultimate feeling. Finding the right bug is easier said than done, kids. That Jamie is why this method of Spencer fishing is so rewarding. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has made some great improvements locally. They recently doubled the area of the Delayed Harvest stretch near Powy’s. The new boundary extends all the

Now it is time for me to learn more about fly fishing for other species. I have managed to get a few smallmouths into the net, but I am still considered a rookie. Maybe I can get a quick crash course from my young mentor. High Schoolers are busy. My man Gavin Reed was one of the guys who actually got me started. I constantly blame him for my new obsession. He is a great kid, and he is quite the fisherman. Gavin is tying his own flies, and I call him a phenom. I love reaching out for some advice. Hopefully, there is enough room for this picture. He and a few of his chums were fishing on Susquehanna. He landed this 50” muskie on a fly rod. Incredible. I fished that same stretch when I was his age. Bravo Gavin. Please give me a call. Or listen to your voicemail. Cheers.

substance is STRICTLY prohibited. It is encouraged to practice catch and release, but you may keep three fish in the summer from June 15th to Labor Day. Fishermen are asked to stay in the water at all times. The Delayed Harvest stretch on Lycoming is also listed as a Keystone Select Stocked Trout Water. This program provides anglers the opportunity to fish for larger trout. Some absolute giants are swimming up north. I have some pictures. The State stocks hundreds of beautiful hogs between 15 to 22 inches. I have landed three that were well over 20. The size and quality of fish around Powy’s this early season have been insane. I also applaud my friends from the Lycoming Creek Anglers. They continue to help.
