ongratulations to the Montgomery softballers and the Red Raider Nation on winning their first Class A PIAA State Championship. What an absolutely amazing accomplishment that should bring a smile to everybody’s face locally. Montgomery Area High School graduated 60 students this year and is truly a small-town community high school. They are a very proud town that turns out and supports their athletic teams. This was evident by the sea of red at Nittany Lion Softball Park for the State Championship game. What a remarkable story of accomplishment that represents everything high school athletics should be about. By winning their way to State Championship Gold, the Lady Red Raiders will be featured on our cover and within the pages of our June 29th edition. Fortunately, I had enough time prior to press deadline to give the State Champs a Webb Weekly tip of my cap and shout-out. Congratulations to Coach Chris Glenn and his staff on the remarkable job of leading the girls on a journey that will be celebrated for a lifetime. I have heard
nothing but great things about Coach Glenn and his approach to the game. This is obviously made evident by winning a State Title, but also by how many young ladies the Red Raider program has representing the school for its enrollment size, including ten seniors. Congrats to all the players that put in the time, hard work, and effort to make this State Championship season a reality. It truly was a team effort that was evident throughout the season. Red Raider family, friends, and fans can be proud of how the ladies represented the school on and off the field. They are everything that is right about being a student-athlete. There are so many great individual stories and bylines about the girls; let’s begin with Faith Persing. As most great ones do, she pitched, hit, and led her team to a State Championship. So, with two outs in the 7th, Montgomery leading Dubois Central Catholic 5 to 1, a pop-up back to Faith provided the perfect ending to the Gold Medal season. This created that

most sought-after moment in baseball and softball championships, the celebratory dogpile. This began a celebration that led all the way back to the parade through the streets of Montgomery and a celebration that’s still going on. There was also something I don’t believe I’ve ever seen in baseball or softball. The triplets of Mike and Nicole McRae, Brynn, Shelby, and Taylor are all in the starting lineup, all outstanding softball players, and all celebrating that senior year with a gold medal. There was determination and inspiration. Senior Sammy Ulrich suffered a severe knee injury right before the season and was able to make it back to actually get on the field to contribute. Playing through injury was common on the Red Raider team; senior Kaylei Snyder played through a dislocated finger down the home stretch of the State Tournament. The other thing that jumped out to me in the State Championship game was the 14 hits, and the longer the Red Raiders played, the better their hitting seemed to become. Seniors Cortney Smith, Kaitlyn Raemsch, and Jenna Waring all contributing big time to go along with their already mentioned 2022 classmates.

And we cannot forget junior Sloan Wooten, who had one of the biggest hits of the year, a double versus Tri-Valley that was followed by a double by Raemsch, providing the winning 1-0 margin in a 9-inning victory over defending State Champs Tri-Valley. Faith Persing throwing a complete game. This game helped pave the way for the trip to the State Final. It goes without saying that the Montgomery girls played outstanding team defense to go along with Faith’s pitching. This was key not only for the State Crown but also to winning the most competitive District IV Championship. They exemplify how championships are won with great pitching, defense, and timely hitting. We will have much more on the Red Raiders next week. God Bless America.

fter all these years, I’m not sure if y’all still need the disclaimer, but just in case, here we go… Things on this page are about to get really gay. So, pull out your rainbow flags and buckle up. But as I’ve mentioned in years prior, if you intend to send me hate, tell me I need Jesus, or call me names, you may as well not waste your time or mine. I’m immune to it at this point. But, in the interest of honesty, you should know that I’m just about to break 20,000 karma on Reddit, and I’m not above using your nasty-grams to push me over the edge. Fake internet points are fake internet points, and I’ll take ‘em how I can get ‘em. Let’s start with a little history, shall we? According to the Library of Congress, “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States, the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as ‘Gay Pride Day,’ but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation, the ‘day’ soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia, and concerts, and LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the

uring this week, 50 years ago, Lycoming County and the rest of the area of the Susquehanna River Basin were in the throes of the most destructive and severe flooding seen in the area up to that time. The flood was caused by heavy rains from June 20 to 24, 1972, from the remnants of Hurricane — and what had been downgraded to — Tropical Storm Agnes. Agnes remains a touchstone memory for all who were alive at the time, and it is this flood that all subsequent flood events have been measured, including 1996 and 2011. It is an event that is recalled in a “where-were-you-when-it-happened” way, such as the JFK assassination and the September 11 terror attacks. During that period, the Williamsport area had 15 inches of rain that came on top of an already sodden ground from a very wet April, May, and early June. The Agnes Flood caused more than $2.2 billion in damage in Pennsylvania, which would be about $16 billion in today’s dollars. In Lycoming County, the damage amount was more than $100 million. Statewide, 50 lives were lost in the flood. In Lycoming County, two lives were lost. The waters of the Susquehanna came
perilously close to going over the dikes in Williamsport at an unheard crest of 34.75 feet. Webb Weekly looked back in 2012 at this landmark event that affected so many people and is remembered in various ways by them. We gathered the recollections of three men, one of which was my father, Lou Hunsinger Sr., who died in 2020, who was closely involved in helping with the Agnes Flood rescue effort and its aftermath. Dennis Gruver is the Borough of Montgomery’s Director of Emergency Management and served in that same capacity during the 1972 Agnes Flood. The low-lying areas in the borough near the Susquehanna River and Black Hole Creek were hard hit by the flooding. “The first call to Montgomery Emergency Management came early in the morning of June 22, 1972, to provide a boat to assist the fire department in the rescue of a family from a home next to Black Hole Creek close to the intersection of Route 54 and School House Road, Gruver told Webb Weekly. “Within a short amount of time, a large volume of water came down Black Hole Creek with a force that destroyed much of Hulsizer Chevrolet Company. The water came over their counters and broke the plate

logistics, my wife Nancy headed up the mass care Red Cross operations inside the school with many volunteers,” Gruver recalled. “Several other events come to mind as the water was on the rise; it got into the control box for the crossing gates at the Pennsylvania Railroad crossing, and a warning bell rang for many hours until the equipment flooded out. The water flooded the control system of the Montgomery Fire Dept. whistle located behind the Post Office. This was at night, and the noise made a bad situation worse. This continued for several hours until the motor burned out, and the unit went silent.” Lou Hunsinger Sr. was a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol and served as Group 40 Tactical Officer at the time of the Agnes Flood. Later he would go on to serve as the City of Williamsport’s Emergency Management Agency Director from 1976 to 1996 and again from 2002 to 2005. “The local Civil Air Patrol unit was assisting with the Lycoming County Civil Defense organization, headed by Ray Anderson, who served as a parttime director,” Hunsinger said in 2012. “We were directed by him to assist with communications and to send out people to various parts of the county and report on the extent of the damage. We were set up in the basement (Emergency Operations Center) located in the county courthouse so that the Civil Air Patrol

glass windows in the showroom. One emergency service volunteer almost lost his life in an attempt to rescue an elderly person from a home across from Hulsizer. After a short time, the surge had passed that area leaving a large amount of destruction to residential and commercial buildings.” As the water surge continued toward Montgomery Borough, the municipal water system located on Black Hole Creek — at the rear of a residence on North Main Street — was destroyed. The red barn is still standing on the site. The borough sewer system was damaged by the effects of the storm. According to Gruver, Montgomery had one death from the flood. Albert “Baldy” Shick died while on duty as a fire policeman with the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department. He was directing traffic at the intersection of Montgomery Street and Thomas Avenue as the water was on the rise. Gruver said the Montgomery High School was the site of the mass care center, with 250 people housed and fed there for several days. With the Borough water and sewer system out of service, water from a well at the Dorsey Creveling residence at the top of West Houston Avenue was used to fill 18-gallon EMA cans which were delivered to the mass care center to flush and to cook. Also, water cans were set on street corners and residence porches. “While I worked on the outside with volunteers from the Fire Dept, EMA, and others that just wanted to help with

Communication System could be used to assist in the coordination of the disaster. The County EOC had only one radio, and it was on West Branch Fire Frequency!” Hunsinger was sent to the Lycoming County Airport by Anderson to help coordinate the loading and distribution of relief supplies that were coming in there. He said he had to take the long way around to get to Montoursville and go by way of the Slabtown Bridge, which ironically was destroyed in the 2011 flooding. “A distribution system was set up first in the airport terminal building to airlift supplies out and then moved to a hangar at the airport,” Hunsinger said. “Supplies were going out one end by air and the other end by truck (6x6s). Stroehman’s had donated a number of tractor-trailer loads of bread, rolls, cakes, and other baked goods. We put a call out that was broadcast on the local radio stations to the residents in Montoursville that we needed about 100 volunteers to sort and make up parcels of some of each for kits to be handed out to victims in many areas of the county and beyond. The residents on Montoursville responded eagerly and organized themselves to get the job done!” According to Hunsinger, everything was not totally grim during this most trying of times. He relates an amusing anecdote.
“A company in, I believe in North Carolina, offered to donate a large amount of diapers but did not provide a way to get them to Williamsport,” Hunsinger said. “One of the members of the local Civil Air Patrol squadron that was heavily involved in support of the County Civil Defense efforts had a contact with a company in the general area of Charlotte, North Carolina. The company chartered an aircraft to fly the diapers to the Williamsport Airport. The weather didn’t cooperate, and the plane had to land in Elmira. The word got out that a plane load of diapers had landed there. A lot of Elmira area mothers desperate for diapers came rushing out to the airport to try and get these before they were sent down here. The New York National Guard had to guard the diapers till arrangements could be arranged to truck the diapers to Williamsport.” Gary Hutchinson had just graduated from Lock Haven University when the ‘72 flood hit. He was an active member of the DuBoistown Volunteer Fire Department. He remembers helping people who were flooded in low-lying areas of the borough. They worked closely together with other area fire companies. They did a lot of work assisting with the Nisbet Volunteer Fire Company. “My most vivid memory, and perhaps most scary one, was when I was involved

in taking a motorboat to Nisbet to deliver some needed prescription medicine to someone. It was really scary seeing the water from the river running across Route 654 and the area of the ‘Y’ that goes into Nisbet. It was dark, and you saw all this water but weren’t quite sure how much of there was. It was unbelievable to see.” He said after the waters started the recede, he and his fellow volunteer firemen assisted in pumping out people’s basements and various other types of clean-up activities such as cleaning up the muck and debris removal. Hutchinson said at the time of the Agnes Flood, Lycoming County did not have a centralized communications system for its fire, medical, and police personnel. He said individual areas of the county at the time had listed in the phone book more than 50 seven-digit phone numbers for people to call in the event of an emergency in the various parts of the county. Some areas had their own dispatching of emergency incidents. Williamsport’s were handled by the Williamsport Fire Department. Jersey Shore had its own dispatching, and the Muncy-Hughesville area had its own. He said each area did a great job in the face of tremendous odds, but there was no way there could be coordination between various sections of the county. “After the flood, the Lycoming County
Commissioners saw the need for the establishment of a centralized county communications system; so, through some state and federal grants, they went out and got the money to help establish one. Jack Rupert, who was executive assistant to Commissioner Henry Frey, worked very hard in preparing the grants and doing the leg work that gave us the communications system. I think Jack Rupert can be called the ‘father of the local communications system.’ Now all the fire, rescue, EMS, police, hazmat, and Homeland Security aspects in the county are now under one roof, and that is a great improvement so that now this county has one of the best 911 and communications systems in the state.” Also, after the 1972 Flood, according to Hutchinson, Bob McCullough Sr. established a volunteer network of stream watchers that monitored the depths of the streams and the rainfall in the various creek watersheds, so that good, timely information might be available to emergency planners. Just in the last couple of years, that network has become automated, which greatly enhances the timeliness and access to the accurate and necessary information about the streams. Hutchinson served as Lycoming County’s Director of Public Safety from 1989 to 2009, succeeding Rupert, who served from 1973 to 1989.

County Hall Corner: And Now, A Word from My Readers By Larry Stout
O
ver the years that I have been writing articles for Webb Weekly, I occasionally get feedback in the form of cards and letters sent to our office and also from face-to-face discussions. The biggest response I ever received was an article defending Dr. Seuss’s books. The pushback against the ‘cancel culture’ fanatics who somehow found his books outdated and insensitive depictions of racial, ethnic, cultural, and gender differences was wonderful to behold. If the response to my article celebrating Dr. Seuss was any indication of the national mood, I believe it is safe to say that my great-grandchildren will probably be reading his books in the decades ahead. More recently, I have had a number of people remark how much they enjoyed reading the LION article on Abby McCoy, the equestrian champion in college who is now looking forward to a life after sports. To be frank, many parents and relatives of younger folks are seriously concerned about the upcoming generation. The world they have been living in has vastly changed
from the time of their parents, and they appear less prepared than ever for the ‘real’ world. Abby McCoy is proof positive that the upcoming generation has some very sharp and well-grounded folks in there. Many people have asked me what my sources of general information relating to politics are. I have discovered that the vast majority of folks get much of their knowledge about national affairs from television sources like Fox or MSNBC or social media, especially Facebook. Personally, I avoid Facebook like the plague, and sometimes weeks go by for me without checking it out. (My wife tells me when there is a post from one of our children or grandchil-

dren that is worth viewing.) And as far as television, I cut the cable a long time ago, so my only exposure to the television news media is when I am on the treadmill at the YMCA. (It helps elevate my heart rate). I am a reader, and I prefer to check out news sites on the internet. The best one-stop shopping for news I have found is realclearpolitics.com. The advantage of this site is that it presents articles from every perspective. I love to read what the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal have to say about the same subject. (Which, at times, makes me wonder if they are talking about the same subject!) The other feature of this site is that it has search headings for science, health, education, defense, etc. This site leapfrogs me all over, and I believe that I get a good perspective of an issue from both sides of the spectrum. But by far, my greatest satisfaction is when I hear that an article I wrote helped someone. I was recently assisting my local library at a children’s event, and a woman introduced herself to me. She was married to an individual who I have highlighted in my articles several times in past years. She commented on how stressful his job was and the toll it took on the family because her husband did not want to burden his family with
the struggles he was going through. The woman told me that whenever I wrote something about her husband, she would cut it out and post it on a board with other kids’ achievements. It was sort of a ‘brag board,’ I suppose, but I was incredibly humbled that my affirmations of excellence of this individual were that important to this family. It makes me wish I have featured this man more often because he certainly deserves it. And in some ways, that is why I write for Webb Weekly. It is a labor of love because I try very hard to find those who are making a positive impact in our community. It is very hard because these people are almost always self-effacing; they do not want to be recognized. Thus, it seems that all we hear about are those who complain. I know it is valuable to point out problems in our society, but it seems that this has become everyone’s full-time job! I am so humbled when I am with those who have sacrificed so much on behalf of other people, be that from the military, community, or public service. Why is it that we cannot celebrate those people who are silent servants, who do so much and get so little credit? Thanks for checking in, my faithful readers. I appreciate you all greatly.

OUTFITS
white button-down and black shorts with gold-rimmed aviators. Or, if you are a true fan of the new film, push it to the style limit with a flight suitinspired romper and sleek sunnies. Even though you may not think it, belts are a dynamic summer accessory. A strong belt can transform basic pieces into a fuller look. When wearing loose trousers and a cotton tank, adding a belt brings these pieces together in an outfit. Throw on a linen blazer, and you are set for a casual office. Outside of work, sans blazer,
you’re keeping cool but still somewhat professional. Belts are also a great way to play around with changing up the silhouette for flowing shifts and slouchy shirtdresses. A wide belt at the waist for a cinched fit, a skinny belt under the bust for an empire waist, or a long-slung buckle belt around the hips are all options to try. Another unexpected summer addon is a twilly scarf. A twilly is a long and narrow scarf, preferably made from silk. There are dozens of unique uses for a colorful twilly scarf. It can
be worn as a neck scarf, used as a headband or around a ponytail, tie it to a handbag, or as a belt, to name a few. A twilly-style scarf gives a neutral outfit a little twist, literally! Not feeling a fancy silk scarf for summer? I also like a good old-fashion bandana as a style accessory. Like a twilly, you can wear bandanas as headbands, headwraps, or around a ponytail. And I love the functional aspect of wearing it like a neckerchief to catch a bit of perspiration or as a bracelet that can double as a napkin or tissue if needed. Finally, feet! Sneakers, sandals, flip flops, and the best shoes in summer are easy to wear. For both ease and
style, I like the platform sandal. They have the wearability of a flat with a subtle touch of height. They come as slide-ons or with straps, so think about how much walking you’ll be doing if deciding between these two styles. For an evening out, a slide sandal works with a midi-length summer dress. For a day full of activities, jean shorts (belted), a tee-shirt, and Velcro-strapped flatforms will see you through stylishly. Summer is all about fun; if you can look good while having it, all the better. And with the above-suggested accessories, looking good can be pretty easy.

I
’m one of those few people who LOVE to grocery shop. I enjoy walking up and down the isles to see what goodies I can find and prepare my family for the next two weeks of meals. The only time I don’t like going to the grocery store is when it’s too busy, and you can’t move. But other than that, I never dread going. My favorite time to shop is the ‘ber’ months. I love walking into Wegmans when the smell of fall just smacks ya
right in the face. The cinnamon-scented brooms they have as soon as you walk into get a cart says to me, “Fall is here.” Then seeing all the fall-flavored coffee creamer, Pillsbury pumpkin cutout cookies, and Halloween cereal just puts a smile on my face. But you know what doesn’t put a smile on my face!? These dang food prices! Things are getting so ridiculous. I used to go every two weeks and spend $150. Now, it could be $147-$153, but
that place before the remodel, and I loved that place before prices went up. But this particular day, I posted my grocery haul on my Instagram. (AndreasCountryHomeCooknFitness) I had so many people shocked by how much I bought and what I paid for it. Here’s what I got: Triscuits, a gallon of milk, two packs of English muffins, cinnamon raisin bagels, 45-calorie bread, grapes, raspberries, Nutter Butter bars, cream-filled cookies, almond milk, giant marshmallows (Kenzy picked them out for the river), napkins, plates, ribeye

I always could count on all the items I’d get to be roughly in that area. These days I’m spending $200 every other week, easily. Last week, the week before my big grocery haul, my daughter Andrea Kenzy and I stopped McElroy into Aldi. I needed my milk and some produce in between those weeks. I left there with two huge bags of groceries. And let me just say that I have never been ashamed to shop there. I loved

steak potato chips (for my steak-loving son), three-pack of healthy snack selects and the last two things that were the only two name brand items, Dawn and cheddar Sunchips. TOTAL= $42 people! Come on now. I am a Thomas’ English muffin girl, but at $3 for only six, I thought I would try the Aldi brand for the first time. $1.19 a pack, and my son Tyler gave them a 7/10. We both love English muffins, and both approved. I’ll still get the Thomas ones when they are BOGO at Weis or when I go to Sam’s, of course, but how can you compare the cost!? Six doesn’t last very long when you are a family of four. I haven’t tried much at Aldi that I haven’t loved. Oh, and the 45-calorie bread? Top-notch! I also love their multigrain bread too. My hubby loves their knock-off Nutter Butter bars, honey buns, and coffee cake. Compared to TastyKake, again, you can’t beat the price. I love to throw treats like that in his lunch and the kids’. These days, if you can save, do it! Another good spot is Sam’s Club. Seriously, I think their membership is still $45 a year. We go stock up every other month on items. It’s a good membership
to have. Their turkey sticks, Go-Gurts, Maier’s bread, laundry detergent, dog food, string cheese, and Greek yogurts are just a few of our go-tos. Now, I know this may be off the beaten path for some of you, but I am going to let you in on another little hot spot over in Loganton. It’s called Scenic Ridge Foods. It’s a grocery store over in the valley and 100% worth the drive. I promise. Their lunch meat prices you can’t beat. Plus, they run specials every week on certain meats/cheeses. [Editor’s Note: You can check out Scenic Ridge’s specials, in their ad this week.] You can get 5 pounds of bacon for around $27. Sometimes they even throw that on sale too! Bacon in a regular store for 1 pound is $8+. That’s $45 for 5 pounds! Right there is worth the drive if you are a bacon lover like me. Then, they have discount groceries, spices, puddings, Jell-Os, and tons of other things they weigh out and sell for a great cost. I love their chocolate pudding powder and Jell-O powders. Sometimes Middleswarth even gets put on sale for 2/$4. On the drive over, especially now, there will be produce stands. The Amish have fresh, beautiful produce from their gar-
dens. In the fall, they have pumpkins, gourds, and hay stalks. On days like these we are living in, I make it a point to get to Sam’s or over to Scenic Ridge. I love Wegmans, but I also love my Aldi. Every store has those items and great deals that we get and stay stocked up. If you are new to Aldi, make sure you take a quarter for the cart. You will get it back when you put the cart back. Also, bring your own bags to all the places I mentioned and save where you can. Poor Man’s Lasagna Ingredients: • 12 to 14 ounces uncooked penne pasta (I use protein pasta!) • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning • 16 ounces cottage cheese
• 8 ounces cream cheese softened • 24-ounce jar red pasta sauce • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C. Boil the pasta according to instructions on packaging. Meanwhile, brown the ground beef, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks. Stir in the Italian seasoning before the meat is done cooking. Drain the grease, if needed. Set aside. Drain the water from the pasta and return it to the pot. While the pasta is still warm, add the cream cheese and cottage cheese and gently stir until combined. Layer a 9x13 pan with half of the pasta mixture, meat, and pasta sauce. Repeat. Add shredded cheese on top. Bake uncovered for about 30 minutes, until warmed through.
“I agree 100% with a past statement from Daniel A. Cupp, while campaigning in regards to promoting taxable business growth, new business and employment, that Borough Manager Steven Cappelli agreed with during our April 27th meeting in regards to my 1900 Riverside Drive property. That is why I am trying to convert my blighted property into a building that will benefit the community. Through the investment will come new jobs at @YourConvenience’s new expanded store that will include Pizza/Subs/6-Packs. South Williamsport will get a beautiful building, increased tax revenue, new employment opportunities, and a chance to show its citizens that it is truly trying to promote business here in South Side.”

V
icar Mindelle Bartholomew, Vicar of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Shamokin Dam, and Chaplain-elect of Lycoming Chapter, DAR, will be preaching and leading worship at the Annual Memorial Service at Old Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2633 Lime Bluff Road, Muncy, on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. Brian Hess, organist and choir director at Messiah Lutheran Church, Clarkstown, will accompany the service. The service will begin in the church and end in the historic cemetery, where those who have
gone before us will be remembered. Old Immanuel is considered to be the mother church of Lutheranism in Lycoming County. Founded in 1791, it lived until its doors shut permanently in 1920. The first structure built on the property was of log; the second and third (the remaining) structures were of brick. The current building was dedicated in 1869 and contains two cornerstones, one in German dated 1832 and one in English dated 1869. At least nine Revolutionary and five Civil War soldiers are buried in the historic cemetery. The church
was built on land donated by Henry and Barbara Shoemaker of “Shoemaker Mills” at the Routes 442/405 intersection. At one time, a school was associated with Old Immanuel, and the church contained a gallery, a wine-glass pulpit, and enough straight-backed pews to seat 600 people. Old Immanuel closed its doors for regular services in 1920, after giving rise to 19 other Lutheran congregations. Some of these have also closed their doors, such as Moreland Lutheran, Trinity (Huntersville), St. Paul’s (Millville), Germany Church, Katy’s Church, St; Mark’s (Lairdsville), Christ Lutheran (Montgomery), Messiah (Alvira), the Stone Church in Elimsport, and Zion’s, also in Elimsport. Some of these churches

oing for a bike ride is a fun yet potentially risky way to exercise outdoors. While it benefits you physically, it’s important to remember to stay cautious as falls and collisions with pedestrians or automobiles have the ability to cause significant injuries. Brush up on the following bicycle safety tips to ensure you’re as safe as possible this summer. Are You Street Safety Savvy? When you ride your bike on streets with traffic, you must follow the rules of the road. You must go with the flow of traffic and ride in the same direction as cars and obey all traffic signs and signals. This helps the drivers around you predict what you plan to do and avoid causing an accident. If you act hesitantly, it can fluster the drivers around you, causing confusion and a possible collision. While riding your bicycle you will need to keep pedestrians in mind in addition to motorists. Pedestrians still

have the right-of-way and bicyclists should yield to them if needed, just as car drivers would. If you need to pass anyone, slow down, announce which side you will be passing them, and use a bell. Just like driving, it’s imperative to stay alert and cautious of distractions on roadways. Look out for hazards like potholes, gravel, or other things that might make you fall off your bicycle. You can also stay alert by not wearing headphones and listening for traffic. Ensure that your children of bike-riding age also have a sense of street safety before allowing them to venture out. Helmets Help Your Head Health Whatever age you are, wearing a helmet is crucial to safe bike-riding. Helmets reduce risk of head injury by almost 50% and can save lives. When it comes to helmets, the proper fit is key. Use the following tips to ensure that your helmet fits correctly: – Helmet straps should be tight enough to allow only one finger to fit between your chin and the strap. – Helmets should not move when you shake your head. – Make sure the helmet covers your

bite. Check the forecast for the entire day and take the necessary precautions such as carrying extra water and sun protection on hot days or packing extra dry clothes on cold and wet days. Also, consider how the weather will affect motorists and pedestrians as it may increase braking times, decrease visibility, or create other hazards that put everyone at risk. Once you have a route in mind, you can begin checking your bike’s functionality. First should be a brake check. If you are unable to stop your bike, you could easily lose control and experience harmful consequences. Make sure that the bike you plan to ride is a good match to your size. If the bike is too big or too small, it will be more difficult to keep under control. Make sure that anything on your person that is loose, such as backpack straps or shoelaces, get tucked in so that nothing gets caught in your bike chain or wheels. Bicycling is a great option to get active this summer by using common sense and caution. forehead. – Make sure the V-shaped straps surround your ears. – Replace helmets that have been worn in an accident. Even if there are no visible signs of damage to the helmet, consider it defective and replace it. In addition to wearing a helmet, consider wearing reflective or bright clothing to increase your visibility to drivers, pedestrians, and other bicyclists. Also, add reflectors to your bike; a front light and rear red light can also increase visibility. Take Precautions Before Your Outing Before leaving for your expedition, have a route planned, check the weather, and inspect your bike. Checking your route before you begin your ride gives you the knowledge of where there might be heavy traffic or difficult terrain. It is best to avoid traffic altogether or plan to use roads that have a bike lane or dedicated path if possible. Weather can affect a bike ride and it’s important to plan accordingly. Exposure to the elements can affect how well you can respond to the environment around you as well as increase your risk for a weather-related illness such as dehydration, heat stroke, or frost-

onger days and lighter schedules make summer perfect for relaxing, having fun outdoors and spending time with loved ones. However, more physical activity and time spent in the sun can also translate to increased health and safety risks. As you and your family enjoy the warmth and sunshine while swimming, biking, grilling, playing on the playground and more this summer, remember these precautions from the experts at the American Heart Association. Watch for Signs of Heat Stress On hot summer days, be alert for signs of heat illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat
exhaustion or heat stroke. Even when it doesn’t seem extreme, heat and humidity can take a toll. Some signs of heat-related illness include muscle pain, cramps or spasms; heavy sweating; paleness; dizziness; headache; nausea or vomiting; confusion; fainting or unconsciousness; high body temperature (greater than 100 F) with dry skin; and rapid pulse. If you experience any of these symptoms, take a break, drink some water and find shade or air conditioning to cool off. If symptoms worsen or vomiting occurs, seek medical attention. Stay Hydrated Staying hydrated is important for optimal
IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE WAY YOUR LEGS LOOK, BUT HOW THEY FEEL
Do you have restless legs?
Call 570-326-9322
Do your legs feel tired, achy and ‘heavy’ by the end of the day? Do you get swelling, itching or tingling of the legs as the day goes on? Do you have varicose or spider veins? body functioning, especially during the hot and humid months. If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, frequently consuming water and foods with high water content - melons, lettuce and cucumbers, for example — can help replace the fluids lost via sweat. In addition, be aware of the signs and symptoms of mild dehydration, including a dry or sticky mouth; dry, cool skin; headache; or muscle cramps. More severe cases may include dry, shriveled skin; irritability or confusion; dizziness; rapid heartbeat; rapid breathing; fatigue; and unconsciousness. Learn CPR As summertime activities expose people of all ages to risks, it’s important to be trained in CPR — or cardiopulmonary resuscitation - an emergency lifesaving procedure that is performed when the heart stops beating. If performed immediately, it can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival, according to the American Heart Association. However, only about 40% of people who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive help before professionals arrive. Because about 74% of adult and 87.5% of child out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes, you will likely be trying to save the life of someone you love - a child, spouse, parent or friend - if called upon to perform CPR. Hands-Only CPR is recommended for members of the general public who see someone suddenly collapse. Call 9-1-1, or send someone to do so, then push hard and fast in the center of the person’s chest until medical assistance
arrives. Use an AED, if available, following the prompts. Conventional CPR is the next step and involves chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing but should only be used by health care professionals and those trained to perform it correctly. Protect Skin from the Sun While it’s easy to get caught up enjoying activities outdoors, remember to take steps to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Limit your time in the sun, especially during the midday hours when the rays are strongest, and wear sunscreen to help reduce your risk of sunburn, skin cancer and the early onset of wrinkles. Experts recommend sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Wearing sunglasses, a hat and cool, long-sleeved clothing can further limit exposure when outdoors for long periods of time. Play Safe Each year, emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children under the age of 14 for playground-related injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). fireworks, keep a safe distance once lit, don’t point fireworks toward anyone’s face or body, never allow young children to play with them, avoid relighting fireworks that do not function properly and keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby when lighting. Staying Safe in the Water Spending time in or around water is one of the joys of summer, but it comes with some risks. Stay safe on and near water with these tips from the American Heart Association: Learn to Swim - For children ages 1-14, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle crashes, according to the CDC. Basic swimming skills like floating and safely entering and exiting the water can help reduce the risk. Learn CPR - Accidents can happen in or around water. In the event of a drowning, the American Heart Association recommends rescue breaths along with chest compressions. Remember Life Jackets - Water wings, floaties and kickboards aren’t substitutes for a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Secure the Pool - Install fencing with selfclosing gates at least 4 feet tall to separate the pool from the house and yard. Clear Out Pool Toys - Make sure children aren’t tempted to play unsupervised by removing toys from the water and storing them in a secure location. your children and keep precautions like these in mind: teach children to take turns as pushing or roughhousing can result in accidents or injuries, check metal slides before use to prevent burns, remind kids to be careful walking near moving swings and encourage them to go one at a time on slides that are clear of other children. Also be sure to use proper protective gear for other outdoor activities like biking or watersports and have a first-aid kit onhand, complete with bandages, gauze pads, medical tape, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes or spray and aspirin. Swim Safely Whether enjoying the pool, beach, lake or river, bodies of water can be dangerous if appropriate precautions aren’t taken. In fact, drowning is among the top five causes of unintentional injury death in the United States, according to the CDC. Avoid swimming alone, especially in natural bodies of water that aren’t clear and may present strong currents or underwater obstacles, and don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Designating an undistracted “water watcher,” wearing life jackets, ensuring someone in your group knows CPR and avoiding alcohol consumption are also safe practices to keep in mind while swimming. Be Smart with Fire Firing up the grill and lighting fireworks are often synonymous with summertime, but open flames pose safety hazards. Never leave a grill unattended, always grill outdoors and keep children and pets away from the grilling area. When it comes to

ids look forward to summer vacation every year. The last day of school gives way to less structured days when kids can spend more time outdoors and less time cracking the books. Summer vacation can be a dilemma for parents, especially in households where both parents work full-time. A pandemicrelated increase in remote working has made that problem somewhat more manageable, but even parents working from home must find fun way for kids

to stay occupied until the new school year begins. No two kids are the same, so parents may need to try various activities on for size until they find something their children enjoy doing during the lazy days of summer. Day camp: Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework or time spent indoors. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. For example, some may offer an array of activities,

including sports and nature walks, in a given day, while others may focus on a single activity, like musical lessons or science-based programs. Camps run by local parks and rec departments do not typically last all summer long, which parents should keep in mind when enrolling youngsters. Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading. Play dates: Play dates are a great way to make kids happy and take a little off of parents’ daily plates. Arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school

friends, neighbors and/or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it’s not their turn to host. Find something free: Perhaps in recognition of the need for affordable, family-friendly fare, many communities now host free events for kids and their parents each week. Weekly movie nights under the stars and concerts in community squares are popular in many communities, but those same towns also may host events specifically for kids during the daytime. A simple internet search of “free events near me” may unveil a host of activities that can keep kids happy and occupied on summer days when their schedules are open. Local libraries can be great resources for free events as well. Summer vacation is a relaxing time for youngsters. Parents who don’t want that relaxation to turn into boredom can look to various activities to occupy their children’s time until a new school year begins.

Living Well…
Benefits of Beach-Walking
M
y wife and I recently took our children on a muchneeded vacation to the shore. While preparing to go on vacation can be more stressful than actually staying at work for me, I eventually get myself into vacation mode and really look forward to taking some time off. This is partly due to one of my alltime favorite activities — walking on the beach.
Beach-walking has many benefits. Some are surprising; some are not. According to health writer, William Mayle, walking on soft sand burns more calories than walking on a harder surface such as grass or asphalt. Mayle cites a study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology where researchers found that exercisers burned 2.1-2.7 more calories than walking at the same speed on hard surfaces due to the additional mechanical work
required. The same study also determined that this increased mechanical work also recruited more muscles and tendons due to the greater resistance of the sand. This, in turn, Dave helped to strengthen Bellomo the calves, quadriceps, and glutes to a greater extent than typical walking. Other research suggests that walking on soft sand may reduce the incidence
of injury to joints such as knees and hips because it is a low-impact activity. Because it’s a low-impact activity, you are also less likely to experience muscle soreness and joint pain than you would exercising on a hard surface. Walking on an unstable surface such as sand is also great for developing proprioception which is your body’s sense of position. This is just a fancy way of saying that maneuvering on uneven surfaces can help you with your balance. Research has shown that walking on soft sand challenges your body’s ability to correct position and

if the sun is shining. Among the many benefits of vitamin D is the ability to help fight depression and improve mood. Just be sure to wear sunscreen as appropriate. To maximize your beach-walking benefits, start slow. Only walk as far as you feel comfortable. Like all exercise, build your distance and speed over time. Also, start on harder, packed sand. Gradually spend more of your walk on the softer sand that is higher up on the beach. Feel free to alternate between hard and soft sand for variety. To really spice things up, try going
barefoot. The muscles of your feet and lower legs will get an extra bit of work, and who doesn’t like to walk around without shoes from time to time. I must say that walking on the beach is one of my all-time favorite activities. When I picture my perfect life, it most certainly includes a morning beach walk every single day. I do it mainly for stress management. There is just something magical about the salt air breeze and the sound of the ocean that makes me forget about the small troubles of work and life in general. So, put on your sunscreen, kick off your
shoes, and put your toes in the sand. Go for a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk; the choice is yours. Enjoy getting outside and let your senses guide you. Smell the salt air. Feel the ocean breeze on your face. Let the sand shift beneath your feet. Be safe and pay attention to your surroundings, but most importantly, enjoy yourself and don’t worry about a single thing. know where it is in space. The joints and muscles around your feet and knees are particularly worked. Walking on the beach is also a natural de-stressor. A study in Environmental Research showed that people who walked by bodies of water such as the ocean for as little as 20 minutes showed decreased levels of stress and improved senses of mood and wellbeing. Spending time in nature and out of urban areas has also been shown to have strong health benefits. As an added bonus, beach walkers will likely produce more vitamin D than normal

very day, you like to go where no one has gone before. To the supermarket, to
your bedroom down the hall, to your desk or workstation, even if you were just there, you like to make your journey a little bit different. Change is good, and in the new book “Phasers on Stun” by Ryan Britt, you’ll see how one iconic television show altered our entertainment. Gene Roddenberry was already experienced in TV writing. He had been working on a crime-drama series that he called “very bad shows” but that was fine. The crime
drama wasn’t really his focus. No, his heart was on a science fiction series he thought could “reinvent what an episodic TV show could be.” A bit of stability in his work was icing on the cake. His first episode of this new show was loaded with issues, however. Majel Barrett, who would eventually become his wife, was his mistress then, says Britt, and casting her in what was a very major role was a mistake — not because of Barrett but because the character itself was
all wrong and had to be almost completely revised. The network, NBC, gave him a choice-no-choice on that. What followed, beginning with the show’s next (second) episode, launched an almost-fifty-year phenomenon that included multiple movies, multiple spin-offs, a cartoon series, an anthology series, and a conference held annually. To accomplish that, Roddenberry did what no man had done before: he invited science fiction writers to

lifelong obsession with the show and a career spent writing about it. Not only does that lead Britt to transport readers with his acumen, but he does so with tidbits of interesting information that are as abundant as Tribbles on a bridge. This is good for fans of all levels — even if, dang it, you’re a doctor, not a, well, whatever. If you love the shows, movies, and the entire cast, “Phasers on Stun” is the next book you want to read. Missing it would be highly illogical.
good... Judging solely by its subtitle “Phasers on Stun” is a bit of a disappointment. Author Ryan Britt names a few national impacts left by the show and a handful of much-needed changes to the way series TV was produced, but... the world? Eh, not so much. But Trekkers won’t care one bit. Nor will Trekkies, the difference of which is high among the subjects Britt writes about, in a book that’s like combat to a Klingon. It had a small part in saving whales and in making fan conventions the huge events they are today. And yet, twenty years after Star Trek appeared on television, its creator was ready to walk away from it all for

lood waters continue to recede along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River today, but leave in their wake a toll of destruction in Williamsport and Lycoming County, unmatched since the monstrous flood of 1936. Since cresting at an official National Weather Service level of 31.36 feet at the Market Street Bridge at 3 PM Friday, the once raging Susquehanna has subsided slowly, but steadily to 24.29 feet reported at 11 o’clock last night. And with the weather service predicting cloudy and cool weather today through Monday-with only occasional drizzles and possible showers — the gloomydisaster picture begins brighten. Cleanup planning is already underway for the city’s West End, South Williamsport, Duboistown, Muncy, Montgomery, Hughesville, Loyalsock and Old Lycoming Townships, Trout
Run, and Hepburnville, and all the other area communities stricken by history’s third most destructive storm. Only the 1936 flood, with its official crest of 33.6 feet, and the flood of 1889, at 32.4 feet, ranked higher. Roads Saturday were reporting more passable, though many remained out of service. North-south travel is possible. No. 2 bridge over Lycoming Creek was open to traffic on lanes. Route 87 north of Loyalsockville is closed because of washouts. Route 220 between Williamsport and Montoursville remain closed because of flooding conditions at Miller’s Run and Montoursville Bridge. Route 220 west of the City is closed at Daugherty’s Run forcing Jersey Shore traffic to use Reach Road and the Beltway to Linden. Route 220 between Jersey Shore and Lock Haven is closed because of Pine Creek flooding. Route 15 South is open to Interstate 80.

The Backyard Gardner…
When to Fertilize
As your garden continues to grow, you may want to think about adding some fertilizer to restore nutrients to the soil. If you added compost to your soil in the fall, this should provide your plants with enough nutrients for the entire growing season. The best way to determine what your soil needs is to have it tested. This can be done by purchasing a soil
sample kit or contacting your local extension office. If testing determines that your soil needs nutrients, you can add these using a liquid, pellets, or granules. Liquid is the fastest method to deliver nutrients, but faster is not always better. Pellets and granules break down slowly as they release fertilizers. I

recommend slowrelease, which gives the ground time to absorb and feed the plants. The three elements in all fertilizers, synthetic or Charlie organic, are Gizenski n i t r o g e n , phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen is the major building block and food source in all fertilizers; this provides the protein to the plant. Too much nitrogen will cause a plant to wilt, turn the leaves yellow, and make the stem soft. This leaves the plant vulnerable to pests and diseases. Phosphorus helps with root growth, blossoms, and flowers. Phosphorus can help a plant survive a stressful environment while growing and prepares the plant for winter. Too much phosphorus prevents the plant from taking in nitrogen.

Potassium helps plants maintain their health and grow quality fruits and vegetables. Too much potassium will slow the growth of the plant and turn the leaves yellow, resulting in the plant producing very little to no product. When purchasing fertilizer, be sure to reference the label on the bag, container, or box. Double-check that it contains the ingredients you need, and that the ratio is correct. If you are gardening in pots, it is best to use fresh garden soil every year; these soils can be purchased at greenhouses or lawn and garden stores. Some garden soils will have fertilizers in them, so you will not need to fertilize. If you are planting in raised beds or in a designated area on your property, try adding your fertilizer in the fall. I think you will see positive changes the following spring. Happy gardening.

ummer means extra time outdoors. Sunny months provide a perfect opportunity for bonding with pets, but higher temperatures, seasonal plants and pests and additional travel can pose higher risks for complications. To help keep dogs, cats and other pets safe during summer adventures, consider these tips from the experts at VCA Animal Hospitals, which has more than 1,000 locations across North America that cared for more than 4.5 million pets last year. Beat the Heat Dogs and cats cannot control their body temperature by sweating as humans do. They have a small number of sweat glands located in their footpads and primarily regulate their temperature by panting. Vigorous exercise, leaving a pet in a vehicle with poor ventilation — even if the windows are down — or being left outside without shade and water on hot days can lead to heatstroke, or hyperthermia. Increased humidity combined with warmer temperatures intensifies the risk of heat stroke, especially during the first few warm days as pets transition
to outdoor activity. If your pet exhibits any symptoms of heatstroke - elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, lethargy, disorientation, abnormal gum color, bruised gums or seizures pour cool water over your pet’s head, stomach and feet or apply cool, wet cloths, ensure continuous airflow and see a veterinarian immediately. Keep Ticks at Bay As pets spend more time outdoors in the summer, they’re often exposed to pests like ticks. Ticks can transmit serious diseases to both dogs and cats. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, as many as 1 in 20 dogs tested positive for tickborne diseases in 2021. Ticks climb onto pets from blades of grass or fall from overhanging trees and foliage. If a tick finds its way onto your pet, use

or outdoorsmen who are about to spend an increasing amount of time in the out of doors in the upcoming months, it is only a matter of time until you come in contact with ticks. Whether you are fishing at your favorite mountain stream, preseason scouting for this coming fall, or working on food plots according to your wildlife management plan, you need to be vigilant about encountering ticks. So what is the big hype about ticks, what’s the latest on Lyme disease, and how can we avoid all of this anyway? The tick of greatest concern in our area is the black-legged tick — often referred to as the “deer tick.” They do not exclusively feed upon deer but instead will attach to just about all mammals, including dogs and humans. They have even been known to attach to birds and reptiles. People who spend any amount of time in the outdoors are at risk of exposure to ticks and contracting a tickborne illness. Hunters, hikers, and those folks who
work outdoors are more likely to be bitten by ticks since they spend more time in forest edges, wooded areas, tall grasses, and other areas preferred by ticks. Pets that spend time out of doors are especially susceptible to becoming a host to ticks and can carry these unwanted parasites into a home. Ticks cannot jump or fly but instead will crawl to the top of tall grasses where they await a passing host, then crawl onto clothing or fur. They then find a preferred spot and begin feeding, which may last for several days. They may attach just about anywhere on a human but prefer moist, dark areas, such as under the arms, the groin area, or under the waistband. If you locate a tick, remove it immediately. The longer it remains attached, the greater the risk of transferring a tickborne disease, such as Lyme disease. Be careful. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible with sterile tweezers or a tick removal tool (check with your local drug store for this) and slowly pull upward with a steady, even tug.

fatigue, joint pain, muscle aches, and depression. A telltale sign of Lyme disease is a red rash in the form of a “bull’s eye” anywhere on the body. If detected early, Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics, and recovery can be quick. If untreated immediately, the infection can spread to other parts of the body producing life-long illnesses or even death. Today, another culprit has extended its range throughout all of Pennsylvania. It is the Lone Star Tick, and it can cause the alpha-gal meat allergy, and its bite can result in other serious medical conditions, including death. If bitten by an infected Lone Star tick, symptoms may not occur right away but can include mild fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, nausea, diarrhea, joint pain, confusion, rash, and cough. If you have been infected, these symptoms may also occur after eating red meat. Remember to take preventative steps to avoid encounters with ticks. Do a full-body check when returning from outdoors and contact your Doctor whenever Lone Star tick or Lyme disease symptoms are noted or a telltale red “bull’s eye” is identified anywhere on your body!

After removal, wash and disinfect the area where the tick was attached. Dispose of the tick by submerging it in rubbing alcohol for more than a day, wrap it tightly in tape and throw it in the trash or flush it down the toilet. This may seem a bit extreme, but ask anyone who has been stricken by Lyme disease, and they would totally agree with these careful and proper disposal methods. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to help avoid tick encounters, to begin with. Wearing light-colored long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and closetoed shoes will help. Tuck your shirt into the pants and tuck the pants leg into socks or boots. Use insect repellent that contains greater than 20 percent DEET on exposed skin and clothing. A very effective preventative is to treat your clothing with a product containing 0.5 percent permethrin. Walk in the center of logging roads or trails, thus avoiding tall grasses, and always wear protective gloves when handling dead animals. What is Lyme disease, and how can it be detected and treated? Typical symptoms can occur within days or sometimes weeks and may include fever, headache, chills, stiff neck,

Deer: Dead and Diseased
N
ormally when we read about deer, we are anxious to learn more about how to nail that trophy we want to hang on the wall, but there are other dynamics to look at regarding our deer population. I guess what brought this topic to mind was a recent trip to visit family near the Ohio state line. To help kill time on these long road trips, I often count the dead deer I see along the highway; I know that’s kind of silly, but it does help keep my mind off of watching the gas gage drop and that’s downright scary. On our trip last week, we covered about 550 miles round trip out Interstate 80 and then south on Route 376-four lane highway almost the entire trip. On the trip out, I counted 17 dear carcasses
— a pretty high number, I thought. On the return trip, I counted 28 dead deer, and bear in mind these are only the ones plainly visible on or along the highway; how many more were down over the bank and out of Ken sight? Hunter So, what does this tell us? Well, deer obviously don’t look before they cross, and maybe drivers need to be even more alert. What do all these dead deer along the highway tell us about the Pennsylvania deer population? I don’t really know, so I’ll let that up to the experts to figure out, but it does make one wonder if there is any kind of deer shortage, at least along Interstate 80. While on the subject of dead deer along our roadways, another topic comes to mind: their removal. From what I understand, the removal of deer carcasses from roadways is

expanded several others. The new area was created when CWD was found at a captive deer facility in Lycoming County. This newly established area includes portions of Lycoming, Northumberland, Montour, Columbia, and Sullivan counties, about 460 square miles. Keep in mind that it is unlawful to remove or export a deer head, spinal column, and spleen from a management area, and nor can you directly or indirectly feed wild, free-ranging deer in these areas. The Game Commission will be offering free CWD testing sites within the disease management areas, and these locations will be announced before deer hunting season. I’m sure there will be more to report on this subject as we draw closer to the fall deer seasons. It will be interesting to see how all of this affects our deer hunting and consumption. In the meantime, you can count dead deer along the highway or check your gas gauge more frequently.

currently handled by the PGC and the Department of Transportation. The actual removal is sometimes handled by private contractors who are hired to collect and dispose of deer carcasses. At their April 9 meeting, the Pennsylvania Game Commission gave preliminary approval for a motion that would allow nuisance wildlife control operators to offer road-kill deer pick-up. These nuisance control operators would be allowed to charge a fee for their services. I guess this move is probably geared more to removing deer that are lying dead in someone’s front yard along a highway or similar situations. In the meantime, I suspect I’ll still have enough dead deer along the highway to keep my mind off the gas gage. Now, what about the diseased deer? Not good news for our area since the Pennsylvania Game Commission has recently announced the creation of a new chronic wasting disease management area and

all sports, the PIAA prohibits students who transfer during the 10th grade and after from participating in the postseason for one year unless given a waiver. Effective for the 2020 season, a competitive balance rule provides that teams could be bumped up in classification depending on success or use of transfer athletes. Regardless of the controversy, three area teams, Montgomery softball in Single-A, Lewisburg softball in AAA, and Selinsgrove in 5A baseball, played their way to State College for state championship games, making the 2022 spring season one that provided on-field proof of the competitive nature of District IV teams. 5,6,7,8,9,10 usually comprise the Western Region, with the two survivors meeting for the state championship. However, for some sports, as was the case this year in softball for Muncy, Montgomery, and South Williamsport and baseball for South Williamsport, some east/west crossover games occurred prior to the state championship. Seedings are accomplished via the use of a detailed formula that takes into consideration the strength of each team’s schedule as compared to the other teams in their classification. This accounts for how a team with, say, an 18-2 record could receive a lower seed than a team with a 15-5 record. This process was implemented to both encourage and reward teams that play a more challenging regular-season schedule. The number of teams each district may receive for state tournament play is based on how many competing teams each district has in each of the respective six levels of school size. Our District IV ranks seventh among the 12 PIAA districts in both baseball and softball, with each fielding 43 teams. District VII registers the most teams, with 124 in baseball and 121 playing softball. Statewide, 647 schools field baseball teams with 630 in softball. Participating in this year’s tournaments, the individual District team breakdown included: – District 1: 83 baseball, 81 softball – District 2: 39 baseball, 39 softball

Everyone is now headed to the 15th tee — a tricky 165-yard uphill par 3. I was so nervous. Twelve teams remained, but several were eliminated after the first round. Alternate shot is a different animal, especially when there is a massive crowd. Good players played from the blues, and the elders moved forward. My guy Chad Fabian swung and missed. Four teams made par, and we went back to the box. My man Keiser sure knows how to putt. My ball found the bunker, and everyone else missed the green. I was just happy I didn’t end up at Sheetz. It was rather ugly, but we somehow made bogey to survive. Greg Wheeland and Davey Person did the same. Tim Conklin and Mike Kutney
missed a downhiller, and we had to go back to round three. The natives were restless, and I had to pee. Billy snap hooked one in the high grass, and I had absolutely no shot. Davey hit a solid first putt, and Greg tapped in for par. They were the 2022 OVERALL Member Guest Champs. “This was my third time playing with Davey in this fun format,” Greg Wheeland said. “We were in third place after Friday. We rallied and really played well on Saturday. Davey was the man. He held things together when I had to go home to rescue our family cat. Kobe got loose. Davey played solo for three holes when I was organizing a neighborhood watch. The flight came down to the final

two holes against Ray Wheeland and William Byrne. They had a slight lead, but Davey and I played some solid ham and egg golf. Great tournament.” Thanks again for the memories, as I look forward to this outing every year. My game still suffers, but I continue to enjoy the interactions with my friends. I have a very long history with WCC. I caddied there when I was a youngster and played in several Invitationals. Playing a few holes with Greg and Davey is what it is all about. Good times. Awesome course. The next stop on my Return to Bad Golf tour is Emporium Country Club. Another Member-Guest, as I am so blessed to have so many chums. Fairways and greens. Cheers.

after every missed putt. Young Wheeland and Person nipped Ray Wheeland and Byrne in the last match to claim the First flight crown. The kids who graduated from Loyalsock High were solid and advanced to the Saturday afternoon shootout with the nine other winning squads. Great turnout this year. Ten flights. Impressive. Two other wildcards also made the cut. The team with the highest point total who didn’t win their flight and us. Yes. Billy and I somehow found a way after scoring the most tallies in our final match. It was beautiful. We still had a shot. We tied Ed Alberts and his longtime partner and were forced to chip off. Thankfully Keiser stuck one tight, and we prevailed.
