The Growth and Enabling Of a Divided Nation
Call 570-326-9322
I
could hear the birds singing and chirping before the sun even woke up — what a perfect way to awake and start the day. I love the long hours of July sunlight. What a special time of the year. It goes without saying no matter where you look or listen; the daily topics are as hot as the July weather. I have never seen our Nation more divided during my lifetime. I have also never witnessed more people at every level, whether it be government, media, or just your everyday citizens, trying to create and pray upon the division. This goes so far beyond thoughtprovoking ideas based upon facts, it has become many spewing evils and trying to create hatred, and nothing good can ever come from raging hate. I would hope that’s a point everybody could agree upon. As I thought about my approach to this week’s article, I wanted it to be based upon common sense to explain in a non-biased way why we’re seeing what we’re seeing. So, let’s be clear, what I’m penning should apply to all no matter of political party, no matter where they stand on any issue, no matter of race, religion, ancestry, sexuality, you get the idea. I must also add that I’m not going to take the time or space to provide actual quotes, but the following thoughts can be supported
by almost every president, those that represent each political party and began with the founding fathers. First up in today’s world of blame being directed at the elected and appointed, those who are the decision-makers within our government. This is easy to do and has become the American way as in passing the blame onto somebody else. It goes without saying many that are elected and appointed do deserve just criticism. Now to the making of excuses and playing the blame game. Our Nation suffers from an epidemic of moral, ethical, and just the flat-out decay of individual values that leads to making bad choices, breaking the law, and accepting no responsibility for one’s chosen actions. Furthermore, when crimes of violence occur, there is always a person committing the act. This individual has decided, for whatever reason, to commit this act. There must be due process, punishment that fits the crime, and the blind eye of justice as intended. It is impossible to legislate moral and ethical values when the very freedom that provides opportunity to commit whatever heinous act possible is made available by the very liberty provided for all. I must point out here that our Nation was founded on Judeo-Christian values.
The further our Country has moved away from this principle, the worse behavior has become. I completely understand how people want to put the blame on government for the moving away from these values; however, you cannot Jim allow this to become an Webb, Jr. excuse for what is occurring. The federal government has been grown into a ginormous beast that threatens the very Nation it was intended to protect. We have been warned about this by almost every president, including the current one. The ability of a government powerful enough to provide everything is capable of taking everything away. The blame for this occurring should be placed squarely on those elected and appointed inside the beltway. This has been going on for decades and was made possible by the lack of term limits. Our federal government was never intended to be involved in the social, economic, educational, and daily agenda of managing everyday life in America as they have become. There are 137 executive agencies and 268 executive departments within the federal government — these numbers are right from the source usa.org. At federalregistry. gov, there is even a higher number — 432 departments/agencies and sub-agencies. I don’t think this is what our founding fathers intended. The intention of the Constitution of the
United States of America was to limit the power of the federal government to keep rights within the individual states’ power. It is intended for the Supreme Court to be the keeper of the Constitution, thus providing protection for the individual rights of the American citizen. It goes without saying that partisan politics should never find its way into the Supreme Court for any reason. Now getting back to that word hate. If you want to discuss any social or political issue, remove the emotion of hate and replace it with calm, common sense, and thoughts rooted in fact. That is how you earn the respect to get your points heard. If you are angry about the direction our Country is headed, replace the emotion of hate with the power of your vote. When you evaluate and consider the candidate you are going to vote for in any election, please take a look at the big picture and who is best for the good of our Nation. The current idea and perception of voters making a decision based upon one issue is very worrisome. There are way too many issues currently affecting the future of the everyday freedoms we all so are blessed with. It is important to understand that when a political party tries to make one issue the complete focal point of their power, it is usually intended to mask the truth. Please get out and about and focus on all the good that can be found and as always, let’s all be careful out there. God Bless America.

ave you been in woods lately? Have you heard what almost sounds like rain hitting the leaves above your head? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s not a passing summer shower. What you are hearing are Spongy moths, and their munching is doing a number on our local forests and trees. Spongy moth (Lymantria dispar dispar) — formerly known as gypsy moth — is a serious forest pest and is responsible for killing millions of oak and other species of trees across the state. The name change comes courtesy of the Entomological Society of America (ESA). The former name was removed from the agency’s Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms List because it included “gypsy,” an offensive term for the Romani people. The alteration is part of the organization’s Better Common Names Project. As reported by the ESA, “The name — derived from the common name used in France and French-speaking Canada, ‘spongieuse’ — refers to the moth’s sponge-like egg masses. “Lymantria dispar is a damaging pest in North American forests, and public awareness is critical in slowing its spread. ‘Spongy moth’ gives entomologists and

Making Fun Memories Happen!
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR), “It usually takes more than one year of defoliation before trees die; however, conifers that are defoliated may be killed after a single season of defoliation. “Although the boom and bust cycles of the spongy moth are less severe than during the past, they still require control during years when their populations are high.” The spongy moth has been causing substantial forest damage here since the 1970s. The most recent occurrence occurred from 2013 to 2019 and another outbreak occurred from 2021 through 2022. This pest has been a primary cause of tree mortality on state forest land since the 1970s. According to the state Bureau of Forestry, in 2014, the moths defoliated 214,972 acres across the commonwealth. That was a decrease from 1991, when the insects stripped bare 4 million acres of woodland. We can all help the situation in our own backyards though. Take a look around your property for egg masses in the summer and fall. The spongy moth has one generation per year in Pennsylvania.
Females lay their eggs as light tan egg masses (100-1,500 eggs/mass) on trees, stones, and other substrates during June and July. So now is the time. Eggs hatch from mid-April to early May the following spring. What do you do if you find spongy moth eggs on your property? DNCR says the following: “Tactics for mechanical removal of spongy moth egg masses can be effective for individual yard trees, but are not effective as a forest-wide control method. “Methods include removal of egg masses before they hatch and removal of unnecessary yard objects where egg masses can be hidden, such as: – Piles of old wood – Building materials – Dead branches, firewood, and other refuse “Egg masses should be scraped into a sealed container or bag and disposed. “Another control tactic is wrapping burlap around the trunks of trees where spongy moth larvae can hide during the day. “The larvae hiding under the burlap are then scraped into a can of soapy water, killing the larvae.” Insecticides can help, but they do not get rid of spongy moths entirely, so you’ll have to use your own discretion to decide
insect and not part of Pennsylvania’s natural ecosystem. Historically, spongy moth impacts have been devastating to the oak dominated forests in Pennsylvania. Massive amounts of oak mortality have led to rapid stand conversions to less desirable forest types across tens of thousands of acres at a time. This can lead to a much lower quality habitat for species ranging from native insects to large mammals, such as deer. Protecting oak habitats with a spray program can also allow for more regular acorn crops now and into the future.” So much like the Spotted Lanternfly, if you see the egg masses, please follow the steps above and get rid of them.

on that. Insecticides are not necessary unless the population of spongy moth egg masses or larvae indicate a threat to your trees. DCNR notes that they conduct an aerial spongy moth suppression program to treat state and federal forest lands, but they do not spray for spongy moths on private lands. Private landowners or municipalities can conduct their own treatment program by following the steps in the “Guide to Conducting a Private Spongy Moth Suppression Program” which is available on their website (dcnr.pa.gov). a cardigan in the office. Leave the cardigan at work to get some sun on those shoulders when venturing outside. Just be sure to spray on some sunscreen. An unexpected weekday dress option to consider is the little black dress. Usually reserved for cocktail hours and parties, the right kind of little black dress can also serve you day-to-day. Whether in the form of a poplin shirtdress, linen shift, or cotton tank dress, a LBD comes across a bit more chic than other neutrals in summer and can camouflage perspiration. Black dresses rendered in breathable fabric can work with sneakers and a bandana for a sporty look or sandals and gold jewelry for a more sophisticated ensemble. You can also wear dresses for outdoor activities this summer. Tennis dresses are just as functional on or off the court. You can sport a tennis dress at the park, a picnic, while watching a sporting event, or for a grocery run. There is the classic version with a pleated skirt or the more modern style tank dress and attached shorts underneath. Or, if you want a bit more functionality and a looser fit, there are hiking dresses for outdoor fun. Hiking dresses often come with roomier pockets and a drawstring waist to adjust the fit. Another dress for an active summer is the swim dress. Whether at a pool, pond, lake, river, creek, or ocean, it’s just not summer until you can get in the water. Of course, swimsuits aren’t always the most enjoyable.
THE
So, skip the hassle and invest in a quality swim dress, which is great for laps as well as for floating along on an innertube. If you’re looking for a simple romantic look, then check out slip dresses. A silky, slinky number is perfect for date night as well as girls’ night. A mid-length non-silk slip dress can also work for day layered in a button-down and belted or lightweight cropped sweater. Cotton slip dresses can also make convenient coverups. The last dress to highlight for this summer is the caftan. What I love about caftans is that they can be luxurious while also tacky, bohemian, while also camp, and look great no matter your size, shape, gender, or age. The trick is to find the right caftan for you and the right occasion to show it off. The beach is the most typical location for caftan wear, but that shouldn’t stop you from lounging around the house all summer long, just you and your caftan. Or create the opportunity to bring caftans together, let’s say, for a caftan brunch — sign me up! Really, in my mind, any event can only be made better when wearing a caftan. That being said, a flimsy tropical print coverup style is probably not the best for a wedding, but a satin or silk V-neck caftan with the right jewelry and wedged heel will look great! Whether you regularly wear dresses or not, consider trying out some of the above styles this summer to look stylish and beat the heat. LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED

OLD LYCOMING TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS The Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) released a study in August 2020 relative to Old Lycoming Police regionalizing with Tiadaghton Valley Police. DCED recommends the government agencies “seek to build community consensus by opening their process to the public and seeking the MAXIMUM possible coverage in the local media.” The Concerned Citizens for Old Lycoming Township have seen very little information put forth for the public. Therefore we will try to inform the public as best we can with facts deduced from the DCED Study and other reliable sources. According to the budget proposed by DCED and the formula used by DCED that calculates costs to municipalities, OLD LYCOMING TOWNSHIP WILL PAY 53.72% OF THE REGIONAL POLICE BUDGET WHICH IS $2,593,046.00!!!!

County Hall Corner Independence Day is Like No Other By Larry Stout
W
hen the Declaration of Independence was presented to the residents of the thirteen English colonies in the midsummer of 1776, there was not just strong support for the action but also a response from the American people that the day should be remembered. It is no wonder. Our early ancestors knew their history, and they realized that what had been building for years was extremely significant. A population aligned to a sovereign was breaking away, but not to serve another king or monarch, but something entirely different. What we take for granted today was totally unheard of in the later part of the 18th century. The colonies wanted to combine their governments together and form a republic — a nation ruled by law and not a monarch, designed for the sake of the people, by the people, for the people. It is hard for us today to realize how truly revolutionary the Declaration of Independence really was. For literally thousands of years, governments were overthrown and replaced with a new king or monarch who would take the
place of the former one. With a brief blip in history in Ancient Greece, which practiced a form of democratic government, for all intents and purposes, monarchical government was all the world ever knew. The American colonies did not want to overthrow King George III or declare their own king. Rather they had a radical new idea. It would be a republic, one in which was governed by a fixed law (the Constitution, as yet unwritten) and one in which the people themselves chose their governmental leaders. Despite the grievances with England, however, there was a very big hurdle that needed to be addressed. Much of the populace of the thirteen colonies had strong Christian convictions, and this included the divine right of kings. Based on the teachings in the New Testament to ‘submit to the ruling authorities,’ many believed it would be heretical to break away from the British king and Parliament. This was a conundrum that was directly addressed in the opening paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence. The first 300+ words of the document state that the colonists do not just have

OLD LYCOMING TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS In April of 2022, The Concerned Citizens for Old Lycoming Township was formed. Our primary purpose is to bring transparency to the process of reviewing a Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Study. This study was commissioned to explore the feasibility of forming a regionalized police force between Old Lycoming Township (OLT) and Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police (TVRP). We have lobbied for the process to be open to the public and news media as recommended by DCED. In April, OLT Board Chair Linda Mazzullo began giving updates on the topics discussed at the closed door study committee meetings. These are the topics: the police bargaining units are close to an agreement to bring to the study committee, there is a pension meeting with PMRS, South Williamsport Borough is interested in reviewing regionalization, and Lycoming Regional Police have been approved for a grant. NO OTHER TOPICS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT FORTH in the 1 1/2 years the study committee been meeting. With this in mind, now view two news articles. The first article was posted on NorthcentralPA.com as reported by Jeremy Stout on June 16, 2022. “According to [Chief Nathan] DeRemer, he is not the presumptive choice for chief if regionalization goes through, and the process would involve disbanding TVRPD and OLPD to form a new entity. This would lead to a FULL APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS FOR THE CHIEF.” On June 17, 2022, a Sun-Gazette article with Mark Maroney’s byline quotes the Chair of OLT Supervisors, Linda Mazzullo, “If we choose to regionalize we have the $100,000.00 grant that will be used toward that and TVRPD CHIEF NATHAN DEREMER WILL BE NAMED CHIEF OF POLICE for what will be called Lycoming Regional Police Department. WHAT HAPPENED to FULL APPLICATION and INTERVIEW PROCESS? Both of these officials sit on the study committee which is presumably following at least some of the DCED recommendations. Page 27 of the DCED Manual states in part, “The bottom line, however, to this EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ASPECT of the regional department is to provide the new regional police department and each individual community with the BEST POLICE LEADERSHIP AVAILABLE.” The closed door process by this study committee again refused to allow light on their process and have apparently declared by executive order, without interviews of ANYONE else, including TWO recently retired MAJORS from THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE and eight other applicants, that they have chosen their Chief.
OLD LYCOMING SUPERVISORS — PAUSE THE PROCESS Conduct and updated study. Open the study committee meetings for residents and news media observers. INTERVIEW for the Chief position.

COUNTY HALL the right under God’s authority to throw off this government but actually have the duty to do so. Authority that is despotic and contrary to the purpose of government, which is to provide “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” is one that is no longer one that must be obeyed. The irony for the British people was they also had problems with their kings a century before and in 1689 had adopted a Bill of Rights that was a landmark Act in the constitutional law of England. Among other things, it established certain basic civil rights that the Crown must abide by. Thomas Jefferson borrowed from this document in writing the Declaration of Independence to hit home to Mother England that of all countries, England should appreciate what the Americans are asking for and why. After the War of Independence was over, July 4th grew into something special. It united the nation as it continued to grow westward and even when it was tearing itself apart in a horrible civil war. Shortly after that war, June 28, 1870, to be exact, the US Congress decided to create “federal holidays” to officially give government employees the days off that almost everyone else already
had. Three of the four original holidays were traditionally popular events: New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The only one that was different was the fourth holiday — July the Fourth. Just six years short of a century of existence, and after a terribly brutal civil war, our leaders knew that this day must — MUST — be remembered and cherished and celebrated. That day brought us the cornerstone of our democracy that would build a country. And since that time, it has inspired people all over the world, nearly one hundred countries at last count, that have declared their own “Declaration of Independence” and sought to reproduce that bedrock base that has kept the United States “united,” for two and half centuries. As a country right now, it is true that we are struggling with defining what we mean by “rights” and even “freedom.” Truth be told, we have debated these concepts since our nation’s very beginning. But the reason we can discuss and debate and differ on these ideas is because the foundation that our country was built on is one that is rock solid. We were given a special day every year so we wouldn’t forget it.

housands of people last night jammed their way into Sunset Park, or their cars, that overlooked the roadway of the park, to witness the Fourth of July celebration there. Traffic in the vicinity of the park became heavy soon after 7 o’clock and was seriously congested for the succeeding four hours. During this period, it was next to impossible to move an automobile north of Newberry. Long lines of cars viewed from nearby hills, appeared to form a great, white wave as they seemed to crawl along the Lycoming Creek highway. No estimate of the number of men, women and children viewing the fireworks could be made of those who saw the fireworks set off in the amusement park. Every vantage point within the park on the sides of the park was occupied with crows of people. West Wildwood and Mound
cemeteries were crowded with automobiles. The roads and lanes about Grimesville and the hills to the northwest of Newberry had heavy traffic. As the display ended and the crowds attempted to get away in their automobiles the main traffic arteries in the city were tied up. Police officers had to be dispatched to important intersections on the through streets to ensure a steady flow of traffic long enough to put through the northsouth traffic. The display at Sunset Park climaxed a Fourth of July in this vicinity that was unusually quiet. Unfavorable weather yesterday forenoon delayed early celebrations and forced either an abandonment or postponement of picnics and playground activities. The baseball games attracted only small crowds because of threatening weather and portions of the municipal program scheduled for Memorial Field had to be abandoned for the same reasons.

Lollipop came to the SPCA as part of a cat hoarding situation. She is six years old and enjoys living with other cats. All of the cats from the group are quite quirky. Many of their tongues stick out and they have a bit of a grizzled look. Yet they are full of love and personality
Tiny Blanche was surrendered with her brothers and sisters. At just five months old, Blanche is peppy. She loves to eat and burrow, checking out the world around her.

t had been weeks since we had been to my momma and stepdad’s for dinner. We were used to all being together on Thursdays at the farm, but life gets in the way. My brother and his family were going away on vacation, but my momma asked if we would like to come over for dinner. She missed us. I told her I would ask my hubby what we had planned and get back to her. Chris, my husband, without hesitation, said, “We haven’t been to your mom’s in forever; let’s do
busy that week too, and it’s not about what you eat; it’s about getting the family together. BBQ is her grandson’s favorite, and we all love it, so it is still a win-win. There’s not much, not to love about Momma’s cooking. We were having such a nice conversation at the table after dinner while the kids were outside playing on the swing. Momma asked if we were ready for dessert. She had made homemade whoopie pies. I poured myself a glass of milk and grabbed a whoopie. I couldn’t wait to take a bite out of this bad boy. COOKIN
came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel like it wasn’t complete. I needed more, but not a whole one, even though they honestly weren’t that big at all, just like a normal-sized cookie. I asked, “Would anyone like to share a whoopie pie with me if I cut it in half?” My hubby jumped in right away and said he would. But then momma replied, “Well, I would have too.” I guess everyone felt as incomplete as I did and needed just a few more bites! Momma said, “Christopher, honey, don’t you want a whole one?” Chris didn’t. He just wanted a few extra nibbles too. “Why don’t I cut mine in half and give you the other half, and then Andrea can give you her half?” I started cracking up. “Mother. Why on earth would we cut ours both in half? That would just give Chris a whole, and then you and I would each have a half? Chris could just have the whole cookie without cutting it.” (This was turning into a whole thing.) Mom, as serious as can be, “Well, then the calories don’t float out of it. Don’t you remember that? If you cut it in half, it’s fewer calories than eating a

whole cookie. Two halves are less than one whole.” Now, those of you who know my mother are probably busting a gut right now because it’s so her. She cracks you up and comes up with some crazy stuff every now and then. I can’t help but love her. This is just one of her famous sayings and something she has done for years. In a container full of cookies would be one lonely half. You knew who it belonged to. But ten minutes later, it would be gone. She won’t eat a whole cookie — too many calories. But two halves, ten minutes apart!? Now that she can do! It’s like my momma’s trademark. You know whose cookie half is in the container. So next time you eat that cookie, slice of cake, or piece of pie. Cut the puppy

Remembering “Dancin’ Doris” By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
T
wo weeks ago, one of this area’s most beloved and colorful people, Doris Myers, died at the age of 94. She was probably better known as “Dancin’ Doris” because of her love of dancing and her passionate pursuit of this love. She was always where things were happening in the community, whether at the Little League World Series, Williamsport Crosscutters games, or a wide variety of various other sporting
activities and events such as the annual Grand Slam Parade and Flag Day parades, as well as major Williamsport High School athletic contests. I had the pleasure of knowing Doris, not well, of course, but we knew each other; we would see each other a lot at the Crosscutters games and at the LLWS. She was always a smiling, vivacious and pleasant person who would light up any room or location she was at. Perhaps no one knew her better or understood her impact on others
better than local radio personality Gary Chrisman of WKSB FM. Dancin’ Doris was a special presence in his life for more than 40 years. It is hard to improve on what he had to say about Doris on his Facebook page upon learning of her death. I found it very moving and will quote extensively from it. “Dancing with Doris!! It’s been a few days since Dancin Doris Myers joined the greatest dancers of all time in heaven. We’ve been telling Doris stories all week. It keeps us laughing — because she wouldn’t want us to be sad. Doris, you’ve left us with lasting
memories and plenty of laughs and smiles. Doris Myers taught us all a lesson on how to live a great life — and live it to its fullest. Doris, you’ve inspired us all.” He continued, “Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly were said to be fighting over the first dance in heaven. We all loved Doris. I knew her for close to 40 years. She was really like a member of my own family. Doris was always upbeat, always positive, always smiling, always fun. She loved life. She was happy to the end! Doris was the type of person who I was always glad to see. “And she always put a smile on

my face. She joined us on many of our Chrisman Show cruises — and traveled with us to Penn State road games. For many years, she barely missed a Penn State home football game. She was also a huge fan of all Williamsport Millionaire sports. As most people know, Dancin Doris was a staple at the Little League World Series. She stole the show on national TV with her numerous appearances with ESPN’s Julie Foudy over the last several years. Last year, Julie made sure that Doris could attend the series, despite a limited crowd rule. It wouldn’t be a true World Series without Dancin Doris. Doris Myers never stopped smiling, and she never stopped dancing. The last time I saw her, a couple of months ago at the nursing home — she had her feet moving and her hands going, and she said, ‘You know, I love to dance!’ Last Friday night at our Kiss-FM 35th Anniversary Party, I thought about Doris — and I thought, ‘this party doesn’t seem complete without her being here!’ Numerous people that night actually asked me if she was there. It was probably the first Kiss Party that she missed in 30 years, but we were all thinking about her. Doris was truly the First Lady of Williamsport!! She was the only person who had her

“Conversations with People Who Hate Me: 12 Things I Learned From Talking to Internet Strangers” by Dylan Marron c.2022, Atria $27.00 272 pages
S
ometimes, it just makes you feel gruff. Seriously, the internet should be the G.O.A.T. invention. It should be a place to connect with friends and share laughs, a safe place to go when you want to be yourself. It should be a place to tell your story, free of danger and full of truth. Nobody should butt heads online, or be victim of a bullygoat. Instead, as in “Conversations with People Who Hate Me” by Dylan Marron, we gotta deal with the trolls. The fact that Marron had a “HATE FOLDER” in his email should speak volumes. As a gay man and a writer-performer, he expected a certain amount of negativity online; that’s the nature of the internet. But as a creative employee of Seriously. TV, the emailed hate, death threats, and homophobia just got to be too much. Before his job at Seriously.TV, he’d acted, reported, waited tables, and cultivated a “prompt” that served him well. “What am I going to do about it?” is what he asked himself every time he was faced with
something that bothered him and this time, the answer was a series of conversations with haters who’d commented. He began to mine the HATE FOLDER for people to talk with. The first was a guy Marron calls “Josh,” a decent guy who was a lot like Marron. Their conversation, done remotely, was a hit with fans and it gained Marron a lot of “points.” In a small way, it gained him a friend, since he and Josh came to an understanding. Marron was happy with that, and with
author Dylan Marron shows that that’s entirely possible: once he approached his interviewees, many people who hid behind the ‘net rued their actions and words. Granted, the haters he hosted were highly, carefully curated, but Marron’s approach shows hope. The other side of the book is the one that teaches tolerance and a sort of Zen approach when you’re the target of a troll. Haters gonna hate, as they say... but with enormous grace and thoughtfulness, Marron offers better ways to perceive it. Readers looking for another way to invite open dialogue, and those who are aghast at spewing commenters on social media will love this book. If you want to do better, “Conversations with People Who Hate Me” could help make happy bridges.

subsequent “Conversations...” But after he quit his job at Seriously.TV to go it alone, he found himself at an impasse. The old way of doing his conversations needed to expand to include a wider angle and different guests. Marron imagined himself bringing together hater and target on bigger subjects. He’d learn more about people – and in the process, he’d learn more about himself. The lesson was underscored a few Sundays ago: something huge happens, something loud, and everybody’s got an opinion. “Conversations with People Who Hate Me” helps show that we can talk civilly about issues without insults. But will haters – the people who presumably need this book – be willing to read it? Surprisingly, on one side of this book,

It was the year of the Agnes Flood, the Watergate break-in, the Oakland A’s were king of baseball, and the Miami Dolphins had an undefeated NFL season; it was also the year that Tony’s Delicatessen and Fresh Meats opened for business. The business was started by Tony DiParlo, who had been the manager for many years of Unterecker’s Delicatessen at the former Williamsport Market House. When the Market House closed, Tony opened a new

In later years Tony would go into the deli early and greet the early rising customers before going home at noon. He did this until 2001. Carl’s sister, Mary, soon started working at the deli. She soon became known as “Aunt Mary” to both the staff and customers of the business. She got to know all the

needs of the customers always came first. Tony’s soon gained a great customer service reputation. His wife, Lorraine, took charge of the catering part of the business. The store hours have cut back from seven days a week to six days. Carl had a stand at the Lewisburg Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 1975 until 2020 with the advent of the COVID pandemic. The pandemic caused Carl and the folks at Tony’s to make some adjustments, but they were up to the task. They added a tent on their side parking lot for non-contact pickup of orders. All orders were called in and continued to be filled by Tony’s employees, who continued to work through the
pandemic. When the store was able to open back up fully, there were plexiglass barriers placed around the cookie island, and a new redlight/green light system was instituted to let customers know when their orders were ready. With the re-opening several employees were unable to return, and it has been very tough to replace them, and as a consequence, they have discontinued their catering service; however, customers can still can order large pans of salads and various other foods that they have come to enjoy. They have also had to scale back their hours to Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
“We are thankful for all of our loyal customers and our dedicated employees even with all the COVID challenges over the last few years. We continue to thrive as a hub of our community,” Carl told Webb Weekly. If I might be permitted a personal comment. Tony’s catered my wedding to my wife Mary in 2010, and they did a wonderful and professional job with their excellent service and food. Also, a very good friend of mine, the late Rhonda Portanova, worked for them for several years and always spoke glowingly of her experience of working at Tony’s and how she felt she was part of a wonderful family. Here’s to 50 more years of Tony’s Delicatessen and Fresh Meats.

customers and their families on a firstname basis. She continued to work there until 2012 when she fell and broke her hip. She celebrated her 90th birthday, complete with a billboard befitting the occasion. There have been various changes in the business through the years. When the store first opened on Washington Boulevard, it operated seven days a week. A catering business and a small retail shop were also added. Through his extensive experience, Carl DiParlo became an excellent butcher and cook, as well as cookie baker. At one time, Tony’s had 40 full and part-time employees. Carl was able to grow the business and still have it retain that friendly, small business and small-town approach, in which the

Joey, a lefty, had parents who often worked away from home, so Joey grew up mostly under the tutelage of his grandmother in South Williamsport. His grandmother had a clothesline strung across the kitchen, and Joey, having purchased a tennis ball for a nickel he had borrowed from his grandmother, spent hours every day dribbling and shooting that ball over the line and off the wall until his grandmother would yell, “Joey stop making so much noise.” Joey was not deterred. Eventually, they located an old tin can, removed the bottom, then fastened it to the garage, and the shooting ritual continued. Eventually, Joey found a rim with a net and was in basketball heaven. Although initially a good student, Joey lost his academic direction in 6th grade. In 7th grade, he stopped going to classes completely and eventually was dismissed from school. About that time, he watched a basketball game at Barto gym between Williamsport High School and St. Joseph’s High School. With a packed house, “people hanging from the rafters,” Williamsport prevailed 61-60, and Joey was hooked on the game. Playing, at the time, for

then local St. Joseph’s High school. Joey — probably better known locally as the former owner of Joey’s Place and Prato’s Produce — and I have been longtime friends, a friendship, as many I’ve had over the years, cemented together based upon a mutual respect of the game of basketball, which we both played and loved. I met with Joey, now retired, and his lovely wife Ann after he sent a card to me — care of the Webb — in response to a previous article I wrote titled “Once A Coach, Always a Coach.” On the card, Joey wrote, “We love you, Coach.” I knew then I had to go visit Joey again, as it had been way too long, to once again revel in the many incredible stories he would sometimes tell about his high school playing days. His wife Ann was a cheerleader for St. Joe’s — I’m thinking mostly for Joey — she remains his biggest cheerleader today, and she can tell stories of Joey’s basketball exploits almost as good as Joey. Chamberlain graduated in 1956 and scored 2,200 points over his three-year varsity high school career — makes you wonder why he did not play as a freshman. Joey scored 1,872 over his.

STREET BALL Mater Dolorosa in the Bower League at Curtin and having just scored 67 points at the South Community Center, he came to the attention of Coach Blackburn and enrolled at St. Joe’s shortly thereafter. Joey played JV in the 8th grade and moved on to varsity for 9th through 12th. Due to his diminutive size, opposing coaches would assign football players to beat him up and try to slow down Joey, to the point that after a game, his thighs would be riddled with black
and blue marks. However, Joey was very quick, had decent hops, and had a left-handed set push shot that was good from long-range and almost impossible to stop. Coaches would regularly say to him before a game, “Prato, you’re not going to do anything tonight,” and Joey would bark back, “Oh yeah, just watch me,” and typically go out and score 37. Did I say he had a lot of spunk? He scored in the 20s, 30s, and sometimes the 40s on a regular basis, and remember, this was long
before the introduction of the 3-point shot. Ah, the stories — like the time up in Renovo, a notorious place to play, Joey tells how he chased a loose ball through the push doors out into the outer lobby, and when he went to return to the court, he found the janitor had locked the door preventing his return to the court. Another time sliding after a loose ball, his head went under a section of the bleachers, and some of the ardent fans began kicking him in the head. At Canton, in one game, the player assigned to guard Joey held him to
nine points in the first half, and when Joey went into the bathroom to relieve himself, the Canton player followed Joey in, exclaiming “my coach told me I’m to go everywhere you go.” Joey laughed and scored 38 that game. My two favorites involve a half-court hook shot and an assist and score that never should have been. As to the first, when Joey began practicing left-handed hook shots from half-court, Coach Blackburn chastised him to stop wasting his time as “you are never going to use that in a game.” A few nights later, as Joey is dribbling down the left side of the

The Backyard Gardner…
Neem Oil
W
orking in the garden this week, I noticed aphids are starting to eat my broccoli leaves. These unwanted insects can do a lot of damage to plants in a short amount of time! Doing some research a few years ago, I came across a product that does not harm humans or pollinators. This product is called Neem oil. Neem oil is an oil that comes from the kernels of a need tree. These trees are found in tropical areas of the world. The kernels are pressed to get the oils out of
the kernels. The oil is yellow/white in color and has a garlic undertone. This oil helps control pests on not only fruits and vegetable plants but can also be used on houseplants. If you do not like the smell of garlic, I would recommend taking the houseplant outside to spray since the fragrance can sometimes be potent. With very low toxicity to humans and animals, I feel this is the safest way to control aphids, white flies, Japanese beetles, and spider mites. How this product works is the insects that eat the green leaves taste the oils, which
deters them, leaving the pollinators unharmed since pollinators do not eat flowers or leaves. This product can also be applied to the soil; this deters the insects in the soil from eating the roots of the plants. When spraying your plants, make sure to Charlie spray both the top of the Gizenski leaves and the bottoms. Some insects find the underside of the plant a great place to dine on the leaves but also build nests. I have also been told that Neem oil can help control fungal diseases, powdery
mildew, and black spot. With Neem oil being a great product to have in any garden, there are some plants that Neem oil should be kept away from — herbs and leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach. When applying Neem oil to plants, the product will leave an oily film on the plants and stems. This product could take up to three to four days before you see any results. I recommend spraying the plants every twenty to thirty days to help prevent problems before they arise. I must warn you that spraying too much can harm any plant. Spraying too much will cause the plant not to be able to absorb the nutrients they need. Happy gardening! #70

y two sons and I had declared the first day of our Father’s Day Weekend fishing extravaganza a huge success! Yes, we did not land nor even hook a fish throughout the entire day, and it would take a dedicated fisherman to understand how someone could call a day without catching a fish a “success.” But we each learned a great deal throughout the day, and I, for one, was left wanting more — to return one day in high hopes of hooking into and bringing to the
boat one of these spectacular tarpon. Our second day of fishing began well before sunrise. My son, Tim, had made the charter arrangements to go out for the day on the “Real McCoy,” captained by Raymond Biez. We motored out of Bud N’ Mary’s Marina, heading south into the Atlantic Ocean, hoping to catch blackfin tuna and mahi-mahi. Halfway through the hour’s ride, the sun began to peek over the horizon into the cloud-filled eastern sky as First Mate Josh Rabon readied the rods and lines for a day of fishing. The rumble of the twin diesels

reach the Gulf Stream in search of dolphins. No, not “Flipper,” but mahi-mahi, which is also a species of dolphin. The fish we were after like to hang out under the lines of floating seaweed, and feeding activity can often be spotted by birds flying and occasionally diving where the activity is occurring. The Captain, from his perch high above us, would spot the birds with the naked eye or by using binoculars, and then we would motor over to slowly troll for the fish. The mahi-mahi proved to be great fighters and would flash beautiful silver and fluorescent blue, and pale green colors as they were reeled in close to the boat where they were finally netted or gaffed. The minimum legal size limit was 24 inches from nose to the bottom of the “V” in their tail. Over the next several hours, we
released a number of fish that were just under the size limit but were able to keep 13 beautiful ones that ran from 24 — 30 inches. They were not huge fish, but they were going to be some of the best eating fish you can catch. On the trip back to the marina, the Captain throttled back to idle, and Todd and Tim jumped into the ocean for a refreshing dip and to cool off a bit. The Captain could not have worked any harder to put us on the fish, and the First Mate worked at full speed throughout the trip, especially when two or three of us had fish on at the same time! For dinner that night, we drove to a nearby restaurant, the “Shrimp Shack,” where they prepared some of the fish that we had just caught. It was fantastic! They pan-seared one of the tuna filets and cooked the sec-

ond one, presenting them with their local seasonings and sauces. The mahi-mahi filet was rather large, so they cut it into three pieces and prepared it in 3 ways — one in a piccata sauce, one in their own version of a Continental sauce, and the third was blackened and cooked over a wood fire. We saved the blackened mahi-mahi, and the next morning before we departed Islamorada, Todd — very much a chef in his own right — combined the blackened fish with scrambled eggs, and it was delicious! Those were just some of the highlights from the weekend we shared in the Florida Keys as we fished and created memories that will last a lifetime. I hope it might give you some ideas of how you can “kick up a notch” the things you might do to create your own fantastic “Father’s Day Weekend!”

subsided as they came to idle, and the Captain instructed the First Mate to “Get the lines in the water.” We trolled for less than 30 minutes when one of the reels began to sing as the line was being stripped off the reel by a blackfin tuna! Todd jumped in to fight the first fish, and we all rotated turns after that. The action continued for about an hour as we were able to net the ten tuna limit for the boat. The fish were not large — somewhere in the 6-8 pound range, but they were good fighters and would yield some excellent tasting filets for the dinner table. Twice we had two fish on at once, and one time all three of us were fighting fish that we were able to net. Lots of action and lots of fun! Once we had successfully caught the boat’s limit of tuna, we motored further out to

So, as a hunter, how should I interpret these sightings of poults and fawns? Does this mean we are going to have a good number of turkeys and deer this fall? I know us deer hunters are anxiously checking the deer we see in hopes of spotting the new antler growth. Certainly, what I’ve seen so far looks encouraging; I guess we’ll see come fall. In the meantime, it is still very enjoyable seeing the different wildlife and especially the new arrivals.

Fortunately, I have been able to spot a few young turkeys with mature hens on a couple of occasions, but my most interesting sighting actually took place right out back of my house. PIAA events is familiar with the pre-game meeting. During these meetings, the PIAA game officials remind and warn participants to remove any jewelry they are wearing. Under this rule, the first player caught wearing jewelry is restricted to the bench along with the head coach. If a second player is found wearing jewelry, the head coach is then ejected from the game. Without question, the safety of all participants should be paramount in all sporting contests. Enforcing the rules is the job of all sports officials and making exceptions can lead to heated confrontations. Webster defines common sense as “the native ability to make sound judgments.” But, rulebooks are written in black & white. Several years ago, I witnessed an occasion where an umpire’s common sense ruled over the written rule, which the umpiring supervisors would most likely have frowned upon. In the first inning of a game, a batter swung, and a necklace he was wearing popped out of his jersey. The umpire called time and was about to enforce the written rule. The coach explained to the umpire that the player’s mother had just passed away, and the necklace he was wearing was a heart locket containing his mother’s picture. The umpire allowed time while the necklace was pinned to the inside of the player’s jersey. The game continued. Nobody complained. Common sense, not all bling is bling.

his neck that often comes flying out of his shirt on nearly every pitch. Some traditional wedding vows include the statement, “Those whom God has joined together, let no one put asunder.” Apparently, MLB rule 6.02 c-7 doesn’t want a pitcher’s symbol of that vow to be 60 feet, six inches from the batter. Could it mean MLB umpires could be referenced as an ‘asunderer?’ As for the other professional sports: NHL – Since most of the players’ body is covered on the ice by their uniform, skates, gloves, socks, and helmet, the NHL does not have any rules pertaining to what type of jewelry can be worn during a game. NFL – The league has some of the strictest requirements when it comes to uniforms, to the point that it sometimes is referred to as ‘the no fun league.’ Refs even re-watch games to double-check that no uniform requirements have been broken. Players are scrutinized from the socks they’re wearing to the brand of shoes they choose to wear. Ironically, there are no actual rules about what type of jewelry is permitted on the field. NBA – By far, the league has the most restrictions for jewelry on the court. Players are not allowed to wear any type of jewelry. This means earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces are all no-nos. The only accessories allowed on the court are knee and elbow braces, headbands, and, of course, tattoos. Anyone who has coached or played in

Sporting Matters With Spence…
An Ode to Yellowstone
M
y thoughts remain with Yellowstone. My favorite National Park experienced a major flood. While repairs are underway, the impacts of this extraordinary event are still in the mix. The park received three inches of rain and over five inches of snow during the first week of June. Temperatures rose, and it created a historical “high water event” that consumed roads and forced the entire park to close. The northern portion of Yellowstone received the most damage.
A helicopter flight over the road connecting Mammoth Hot Springs and Gardiner, Montana, showed several sections that were completely gone. Incredible. The water was at an all-time level. It was a disaster — one for the ages. Growing up in Billings, Montana, I have spent a great deal of time in this region. I know the area quite well. My family and I were out just a few years prior. We camped and fished along the Gardiner River. I have some great photos of Jensen and me catching

healthy browns in a section that is no longer. So this tragedy hit close to home. Some of you may have seen the footage of a large cabin being swept away. Yes. I remember that structure. It was quite Jamie scary. Again my heart Spencer and prayers are with this entire community. “An indefinite full backcountry closure has been enacted in Yellowstone,” Park Superintendent Cam Sholly told reporters. “Dozens or hundreds of backcountry bridges may have been lost in the flooding. We are doing our best to assess and make repairs to reopen. There will be significant changes to accommodate visitors and their safety.” The Northern loop received the most damage. The flooding only affected the south in some areas. The Park is now open in a few areas. But everything was impacted. The Lamar Valley is another one of my favorites. This beautiful stretch is between Mammoth and Cooke City, Montana. The high water did some damage. Repairs are underway. Kudos to Yellowstone’s officials. They are exceeding all expectations. “Some sections of rivers and tributaries
may have changed permanently,” Sholly added. “This makes it rather difficult to rebuild the roads precisely as they were. Our team is on it. Unfortunately, we were hit with an unprecedented situation.” I feel bad for those who had to cancel their reservations. Yellowstone National Park is extraordinary. She will be back sooner than later. I vividly remember the fires when I was just a youngster. This also caused some major havoc. But the park survived and came back even better. I believe that this will be the case after this summer. Please be patient. America’s best are now on it. Each week I receive reports that roads are getting fixed and are now open to visitors. Yes. I hurt for those in the industry that solely rely on the Park’s many visitors. Hang in there, Yellowstone. I hope to see you again. We changed our plans and are heading to the Black Hills this summer instead. Cheers.
