ecord inflation, the worst 1st term start in presidential history, and hardworking Americans getting fleeced at every turn. And that’s just for warmups. All of the above make it a great week to stress some positives. So, let’s move right along and talk about some great accomplishments by folks in our area. South Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner has been on our cover twice as a PIAA state tennis champ. The amazing young athlete earned another great honor this past week. She was named to the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards girls’ tennis team, and is a nominee for the National Girls Tennis Player of the Year. What a great way to cap off a high school career that included those back-to-back state championships, 4 district titles, and a 73 and 2 career record as a Mountie. I must also note her only two losses were in the state tournament her freshmen and sophomore years. Webb Weekly congratulates Olivia on being named all-American. A great honor for a fantastic young lady. Moving from the tennis court to the

motocross track, Broc Rupert has had a passion for riding and racing since he was just young. He has worked extremely hard and paid his dues in a most difficult sport of motocross. Broc recently competed at the Mid-East Regionals at Briar Cliff Motocross in Nashport, Ohio, and won, or maybe I should say qualified, his way to compete for a National Title. He will be at the AMA National Championships at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Tennessee the first week of August. By earning a spot at the event, Broc is one of the 40 best riders in the Nation at his classification. Tip of my Webb Weekly racing cap to team Rupert, and good luck at Nationals. coming article. I have known Mike Sharrow for a long time. I wish I could get a count on how many games he umpired of my sons Jimmy and Hunter at all the different levels of baseball as they grew up. He is truly one of the good guys and always approaches the game as being more than just about balls and strikes. He has his own unique style, is there to help the kids, and has an unbelievable understanding of the game and its rules. I’m proud to consider Mike a friend, and always enjoy talking baseball with him. So, for all these reasons, it just seemed fitting that as my nephew Gage was getting ready to compete for a District 12 Championship at Volunteer Stadium that Umpire Mike Sharrow was being honored for 50 years of service by Pennsyl-

vania’s Little League District 12. And no, I did not miss that call; you read it correctly, 50 years! It was also fitting that Chris Downs and Doug Alexander presented Mike with the award for his decades of dedication and service. The three have worked together many a time over the years. A special shout out to Chris for everything he does up on the hill and out on the fields within our local communities. Please, folks, as you’re attending games, remember, there are many things more important than wins and losses and out and safe calls. I encourage more individuals to get involved in umpiring. Again, a tip of the cap to you, Mike, and thank you for being everything an umpire should be about on and off the diamond. God Bless America.

Sexual abuse can happen to children of any race, socioeconomic group, religion, or culture. There is no guaranteed way to protect children from sexual abuse, but there are steps you can take to lessen the risk. Being actively involved in your child’s life is the first line of defense. According to rainn. org (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), “being actively involved in a child’s life can make warning signs of child sexual abuse more obvious and help the child feel more comfortable coming to you if something isn’t right. If you see or hear something that causes concern, you can take action to protect your child.” They also offer this advice: Show interest in their day-to-day lives. Ask them what they did during the day and who they did it with. Who did they sit with at lunchtime? What games did they play after school? Did they enjoy themselves? he Clinton County SPCA has been serving and protecting the animals of Clinton County for more than 70 years. In a bid to raise money to help continue this good work, they will be holding a Furry 5K and Dog Jog this Saturday, July 23. The event is located at the Castanea Picnic Grounds in Lock Haven. Registration is available online on RunSignup.com — and same-day registration is 7:00 a.m.-7:45 a.m. 5K begins at 8:00 a.m. More information can be found by visiting their Facebook Page or calling 570-748-4756. All leashed and dog-friendly pups are welcome to join their participants! Shelter officials at the Clinton County SPCA stated that they love to see members of the community and from other areas come out to gather for a fun time. Events like the 5K aren’t always about raising money but also about providing something for the community to get together and be able to attend an event with their pups and kids too! “The community does so much for them, and it really makes them smile to see families show up with their furry friends to con-

tinue to support the local SPCA.” The SPCA operates solely on the funding of monetary and non-monetary donations, memorial contributions, adoption fees, and the boarding services they provide. The current economy with price inflation has been putting a damper on the shelter itself. The community is struggling to stay afloat with the increasing cost of living, and they are noticing its impact on contributions. They find themselves stuck “between a rock and a hard place,” depending on the donations to operate because when their supporters struggle, they can’t afford to make donations. The Clinton County SPCA will just continue to do what they do on a daily basis, and they know in the end, their community will have their back, as they always do. Contributions made to the SPCA are utilized for building operating costs and veterinary care for each individual animal to prepare for adoption (which some need daily medications, special surgeries, hospital stays, and much more). They also offer a low-cost boarding facility for dogs to the public to raise money! Any donation that comes through the SPCA Doors is greatly appreciated and well put to use.

towards their ‘Senior Fund’ and their ‘Special Needs Fund’. The Senior Fund helps them give their senior residents the best care. Providing seniors with proper supplements, special food, parasite control treatments, oral care & dentals, and all of the essentials needed to take care of a senior animal. The Special Needs Fund makes sure that every animal that enters the shelter receives its vaccinations and a wellness checkup, has been spayed or neutered, and receives a microchip and flea/tick treatments, at minimum. Some animals need a lot of additional vetting, and this is where the Special Needs Fund comes in handy. Many animals need expensive medical procedures done, such as mass removals, cesarean sections, dentals, enucleation and other eye surgeries, treating skin issues, amputations, emergency surgeries, and more. Some dogs come to us starving and malnourished, and it takes months of medication and care to nurture them for adoption. The SPCA continues to make it its mission to provide a forever home for every homeless animal that comes through our doors. They cannot change the past of the animals’ life, but they can, and they do strive to rewrite their future. The Clinton County SPCA is located at, 33 Mill Hill Road, Lock Haven. They can be contacted via Facebook or at 570-748-4756.

Established in 1950 and remaining a small no-kill animal shelter to provide veterinary care and housing for the lost, homeless, abandoned, abused, and neglected animals of all kinds in Clinton County until they reach adoption or find their way back home. The SPCA intakes an average of 500-600 animals a year, with a 98 percent success rate of adoption. They offer a TNR Program (Trap-Neuter-Return), funded by the Clinton County Community Foundation, to help lower the community cat population by offering vouchers to Clinton County residents to cover the cost of a spay or a neuter of an outside feral cat. “If you feed it, fix it.” The SPCA also employs a Full-Time Humane Society Police Officer to investigate and hold those accountable for Abuse and Neglect in Clinton County. In addition to monetary donations, their donation wish list includes flea treatment, Purina cat chow, Purina kitten chow, canned cat food, paper cat litter, nyla bones for dogs, laundry detergent (liquid, any brand), bleach and disinfectant products. You can also help them out via Amazon Smile by choosing them as your charity and making purchases through Amazon. It doesn’t cost you anything for you and the CCSPCA gets a portion of the proceeds. t’s the economy, stupid.” Perhaps no truer words of advice were ever given to a politician than those uttered by political strategist James Carville during Bill Clinton’s 1992 run for the White House. But it really doesn’t matter if those four impactful words were expressed during the 1492 Mayflower voyage or to those that might be contemplating a 2024 presidential run; if the economy isn’t working, everyone is in for a bad time. This country was founded as the United States of America, but sadly today, not even the two camps wearing red and blue are united on the same page with one another. There used to be a joke that you couldn’t trust a used car salesman. But if you’ve been paying any attention, just about anyone selling a used car today has a higher approval rating than those individuals elected to political office.

Recently released figures revealed that 85% of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, including 92% of Republicans and 78% of Democrats. President Biden’s approval rating continues to plummet, with 36% approving and 59% disapproving. Only 15% of all Americans give Congress their approval, with 85% disapproving. Another Gallup survey reports public confidence has fallen in every one of 16 major U.S. institutions. Those institutions in which Americans have the least confidence are the presidency, newspapers, the criminal justice system, big business, television news, and at rock bottom, Congress at 7%. Those institutions enjoying the greatest measure of confidence are small businesses, the military, the police, the medical system, and religious institutions. These figures are scary stuff. History reveals that, like the Roman Empire

FOUR WORDS itself, the most destructive blows to a national fabric come from within. Sadly, we are quickly headed down that slippery slope. It matters little what the political persuasion is; everyone should heed Carville’s four magical words — immediately, if not sooner. The current attack on America’s energy industry is spreading ill akin to the coronavirus. The soaring prices at the pump do not stand alone. Every business finds it more expensive to receive goods, and every consumer bears the increased prices at the cash register because of it. The rash of mass shootings, the crisis at our southern border, the dispute over Roe vs. Wade, the war in Ukraine, and the debate over global warming are all problems creating division among us, but if the woes of our economy are not addressed properly — a much greater peril will exist. During a recent conversation with a financial advisor, I learned the first six months of 2022 have been the worst

half of a year for the stock market in 50 years and so far, has been the worst year ever for the bond index. During April and June, the S&P declined by more than 8%, its worst showing since March of 2020. For some, June’s financial picture was very grim. One investor revealed that during June, his portfolio lost $77,000, more than he had ever made in a single calendar year while he was working. Just weeks ago, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was forced to step down from office after his government was left disabled by a wave of resignations, tales of parties during the COVID-19 lockdown, and what many publicly referred to as his lack of integrity. While the seat of our government is spending weeks reviewing the shameful events of January 6, they and we might be better served if they 1) take a look around at what’s happening in our country; 2) look themselves in the mirror; and 3) heed James Carville’s words – “IT’S THE ECONOMY STUPID!”

County Hall Corner: God is Dead By Larry Stout

T

hroughout Lycoming County, there are a number of local municipalities and county government entities that hold regular public meetings. One thing they all have in common is that they start their meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, UNDER GOD, with liberty, and justice, for all.” I emphasize the ‘under God’ clause because it appears that this has become an outdated belief in our country. While we are at it, we might as well agree with those who wish to get rid of “In God We Trust” on our currency as well. How else to decipher the recent Gallup poll in June of this year, which showed that belief in God is at its lowest level since Gallup began polling the topic 78 years ago. It appears that, for all intents and purposes, the majority of people in America consider that God is dead. God has been on life-support for centuries now. The German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel deeply regretted his discovery of God’s death in his work, Phenomenology of Spirit, published

in 1807. Later in the 19th century, another German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, celebrated the idea of eliminating the possibility of God because it freed man to new possibilities. But it was not until 1966 that the great British philosopher and rock musician John Lennon announced on the cover of Time magazine that The Beatles were more popular than God. He was simply confirming what Time magazine had already proclaimed on the cover of their Easter edition that same year — GOD IS DEAD in bold red letters on a black field, and that was it — for the first time in the magazine’s history, there was no accompanying illustration. That April 8, 1966, Time magazine issue sold more copies than any other in the previous two decades,

which is quite remarkable considering that this included events such as the first space flights and JFK’s assassination. Obviously, God’s obituary was very big news. But for some reason, there were a few stubborn people who kept thinking that God was still hanging around. These numbers kept getting smaller, however. The Gallup poll referenced earlier specifically noted that belief in God has fallen the most in recent years among young adults, progressives, and Democrats. This is not particularly surprising given that this particular demographic is the one that highly values and emphasizes individual identity. If a person wishes to recognize themselves as something different from their biological formation, they are certainly free to do so. However, it negates the declaration in the first chapter of the Bible, which states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth,” and later, “he made man in his image, male and female, he made them.” This is the angst of our times — we need God, but we don’t believe in God. We honor God because it was this belief that provided the cohesiveness that forged our nation among disparate people groups. Yet, it now stands in the way of personal identity that is at the

heart of individual freedom that is so much treasured in today’s world. Logic was Abraham Lincoln’s strength; when asked if a horse’s tail is considered a leg, how many legs does a horse have, Lincoln replied, “four.” Because he noted that no matter what you call a tail, it is still a tail; in the same way, we can avoid God, deny his existence, and insist that belief in God is an antiquated concept that inhibits full human potentiality. But, ironically, this is also a belief. Are we better off writing God off ? Where does that leave us, not just as individuals but as a nation? What holds us together? It seems we should scrap the Pledge of Allegiance altogether because, as a Republic, we are no longer “under God.” Should we denounce the Little League Pledge that begins, “I trust in God…” Why stop there? Should we ban the song “God Bless America?” Should we ’cancel’ public officials who end their speeches with the standard “And may God bless America?” Or perhaps this majority that Gallup is identifying is sticking their collective head in the sand to avoid the obvious — God isn’t dead. Call me a Dead God Denier, but I agree with the Psalmist who wrote in Psalm 14:1, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”

Every year seemed super-cool at the start it feels like I have my summer of summer may now be just wardrobe all lined up but come late July, I feel like I too much effort for these hot and sticky days. OUTFITS

On the flip side, if that beach trip, class reunion, or cousin’s wedding are looming on the horizon, then start outfit planning while you organize your closet. Be sure the pieces you want to wear/pack are clean, unwrinkled, and still fit. For vacations and special occasions, I love the idea of donning a jumpsuit instead of a frock. For casual plans, try a billowy maxi skirt with a highneck tank top instead of shorts and a scoop-neck tank. Trying out different

silhouettes and combinations can also give your style a mid-season boost. While you’re thinking about upcoming plans, also consider how quickly August can pass by. Before you can blink twice, days will quickly steep themselves in nights; nights will quickly dream away the time. Then it’ll be back-to-school and schedules and the changeover of summer into fall. Make sure you have a few pieces at the ready for the transitional weather ahead. I like the idea of throwing a

relaxed knit over a summer outfit for chillier evenings and inside with the AC pumping. Also, look to see what pieces you may be missing for the upcoming fall. Do you need to replace or upgrade any basics? If so, be mindful and plan for those August sales. For clothes that you aren’t quite sure what to do with, give them a trial wear. Choose a day, preferably one where you’re out and about, then take note of how you feel in them. Are you comfortable, do you feel confident, is the piece functional to your day,

do you receive any compliments? All things to consider as you give your “maybes” a test wear before deciding to keep in rotation, put away, or donate. Style looks not with the eyes but with the mind. In other words, while dressing is a visual medium, it’s what you think of how you look that counts. So, you may not be sharing in my mid-season sartorial malaise. The least I can hope is that you caught some of the quotes and puns I’ve peppered throughout from a Midsummer Night’s Dream for this midsummer closet cleanout.

salad, a sweet bite of ice cold watermelon, or diggin’ into some strawberry shortcake covered in milk, please bow your head and take a minute to pray for these amazing farmers who work so hard. Lord knows, they do so much for us! Thank you to all the farmers from great to small; we eat all because of you. Thanks for bearing the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter so we can gather around our tables and enjoy meals because of you. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. The recipe: This recipe has been our new river lot BBQ favorite! One of my besties, Lindsay Mertes, made this, and I was hooked! So, we made it special for our fourth of July cookout. The flavor of these burgers blew my mind! Delish! *NOT MY PHOTO, but it is the photo of the recipe! * The Worcestershire Burger Ingredients:

• 2 lbs. of ground beef • 1/2 cup of panko crumbs • 1 large egg • 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce • 2 Tbsp. milk • 1 tsp. salt • 1 tsp. garlic powder • 1 tsp. onion powder • 1/2 tsp. black pepper Directions: In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients. Mix well. Shape into patties and BBQ until desired. Serve on toasted rolls and your favorite veggies. Bacon never hurts either.

Ultimate event, the main event of which is a double elimination bracket. Smash Bros. is a platform fighting game created by Masahiro Sakurai & developed by Nintendo that pits the most popular faces in gaming against each other, from Mario and Pikachu to Pac-Man and Minecraft Steve. “We compete in the most recent iteration, Super Smash Bros. (Smash) Ultimate. A platform fighting game differs from a traditional fighting game in that instead of a health bar, as your character is damaged, they build “percent,” which causes them to fly farther as they take each hit. he video game industry has changed a lot over the years, going from simple 2-dimensional, pixelated games like Pong to elaborate multi-player networks with a global reach. In 2019, the US video game industry generated a whopping $90+billion and supported approximately 430,000 jobs. This translated to over $12 billion in local, state, and federal taxes. In the US alone, there are currently over 180 million gamers and over 2 billion worldwide. One such gamer has made it his mission to grow the sport of gaming regionally and statewide by promoting competition, specifically Smash Bros. “I want to emphasize that the large majority of people who enter these brackets are not professionals,” said tournament director Salvatore White. “I have entered tournaments like this since the game came out in December 2018, and I hardly ever profit. I play for the community experience, I play because of my competitive drive I developed from playing baseball and basketball growing up, and I play for the wonderful feeling of seeing improvement.” The tournament, Save Point 2, will

hit the “blast zone,” which causes you to lose your “stock,” which is essentially one of the lives you get before you lose,” said White. Smash has the ability to customize game modes to a large degree. Competitive Smash tournaments have a ruleset designed completely by the community to decrease randomness and showcase player skill as much as possible. This is done by disabling items that spawn randomly around the stage and banning many stages in the game which are too big, small, or random to be suitable for competitive play. Competitors play with

three stocks and a timer of 7 minutes per game. The tournament format is a double elimination bracket, with best-of-three game sets for each match. Near the end of the tournament, sets will be best-of-five instead. The events are also organized by the community. This is because Nintendo does not support competitive Smash financially like developers do for other esports. This means that, compared to other tournaments, competitors play for much smaller cash prizes. “Our community is driven by a passion for the game. There are tournaments in Smash all over the globe ranging from

Ultimate’s lifespan, there have been two worldwide rankings, and neither time was a PA player ranked in the top 50. Almost every time PA runs a regional event, a player from a bordering state travels here & wins the tournament. However, our best player, Willow “IcyMist” Barto of Slippery Rock, is very close to breaking into the top 50 due to massive improvement from practice over quarantine. She will be our highestseeded player going into Save Point, with registered players from ten other states looking to take her and us down. I want us to defend our turf so we can stop being overlooked as a region. I think it would be a good step toward breaking into the first tier of states for Smash talent.”

Other top players in the region include Joel “Beast” Veras of Allentown and Aaron “BONK!” Markovitz of Wayne, Ryan “Yoda Cage” Schrier of Philadelphia, and Anthony “MPg” Casale, who lives in Delaware but travels across the PA border on a weekly basis to practice and compete in Philadelphia-region locals. “IcyMist mostly competes at locals in Pittsburgh, whereas the other four mostly compete at locals in the Philadelphia area. They also practice by traveling to regionals and majors across the east coast and beyond. Just this past weekend, Beast, Yoda Cage, and MPg flew to Las Vegas for a major tournament called Double Down, where Yoda Cage and MPg did well, both placing 65th out of 987 entrants,”

said White. Pennsylvania is split into three main regions. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, & Central (which includes the Harrisburg area). Each region holds weekly tournaments. Anyone in the Williamsport area that is interested in competing in Smash Ultimate can connect with the Smash Club at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. The club hosts weekly tournaments during the school year. During the summer, the biweekly tournaments are held on Fridays at the hobby shop, Nerd Haven, in Lock Haven. For more information about Smash tournaments in Pennsylvania, contact Salvatore White on Twitter at @ salvatore_slate.

The player-base is mostly late teens to early twenties, but even some of the best players are mid-teens and late twenties,” said White. Citing Pennsylvania’s poor showing in previous competitions, White is on a mission to improve player performance and the popularity of this game. “Pennsylvania is an underwhelming region for Smash Ultimate. For our population, we are not as good as we should be. New York, California, Florida, and Texas, the states that are bigger than us, are all significantly better. Many states smaller than us, like Georgia, New Jersey, & Michigan, are also clearly better. In

How to Conserve Energy While Keeping the AC On

A

ir conditioning is a welcome luxury come the dog days of summer. Few people can imagine getting through a hot summer afternoon without turning their AC on, and that can make July and August some of the more costly months on the calendar in regard to energy consumption. Though the months of July and August may not seem well-suited to cutting energy consumption, there are ways to conserve that don’t require turning off the AC. Reconsider the location of your thermostat. The Performance Building Institute, Inc. notes that thermostats are sensitive to heat. Thermostats located near heatgenerating appliances like lamps, televisions and computers may be fooled into thinking a home’s interior is warmer than it actually is. That will keep a temperature-controlled AC running longer and more frequently than is necessary. If necessary, move

the thermostat to a part of the home where there are no electronics and appliances. Emphasize maintenance of the AC unit. Even the most energy-efficient AC unit will be forced to work harder, and consume extra energy, if it’s not well-maintained. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy notes that ENERGY STAR-certified HVAC equipment can yield annual energy savings of 10 to 30 percent. But such products must be maintained. Annual maintenance appointments with an HVAC technician can ensure the unit is clean and refrigerant levels are correct, helping it run as efficiently as possible.

Embrace natural ways to keep a home’s interior cool. Cranking the AC is not the only way to maintain a comfortable temperature inside a home during the months of July and August. Closing curtains on especially warm days keeps the sun out and makes it easier to maintain comfortable temperatures inside without lowering the temperature on the thermostat. Avoiding the stove on hot nights and preparing cold meals or firing up the grill outside is another way to keep the house cool. Address insulation issues. Cracks

fireworks. After you light a firework, get away to a safe distance. Don’t try to hold a firework in your hand after it’s lit, and do not light it into a container of any kind. Only responsible adults should light fireworks. Always ensure they are safely disposed of after the fun is over. It is also important to remember many pets are scared and stressed by fireworks. Sarah Green (Calkins Creek, $18.99). This biography of Julia Child presents to kids a life of adventure and purpose, explaining how Child went from barely knowing how to “boil water” to becoming a beloved chef after her bold and heroic actions in World War II. Bonus for parents and kids alike: easyto-make, yummy recipes are included! If art is your thing, or if you love history (or both!), then you’ll want to read “Jackie and the Mona Lisa” by Debbie Rovin Murphy, illustrated by Jen Bricking (Sleeping Bear Press, $17.99). It’s the story of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who loved beautiful things, including fashion, dance, music, rare

pottery, decorating and especially art. During her time at the White House, she wanted everyone to see the most famous painting ever created, and so she arranged to borrow it for a short time. Her story, the tale of the painting, and the story of those few weeks that Mona Lisa fever gripped America are all here for 5-to-8-year olds to enjoy. And for kids ages 12-and-up, “The Race of the Century” by Neal Bascomb (Scholastic, $18.99) tells the story of three athletes who set out to accomplish the impossible – or, at least that’s what everyone said about the dream they had. Roger Bannister, John Landy, and Wes Santee each had set a goal to run a mile

in four minutes, which nobody believed could be done. The year was 1952, the challenge was there for the taking, and one of them would break the record which, by the way, has been surpassed a lot since then. Still, athletes and kids who love a high-tension biography will want this one. If these books aren’t quite your child’s thing, be sure to check with your favorite bookseller or librarian for more. They’ll steer you toward stories about people in history, entertainment, and sports. They know about kids’ books by chefs, activists, animal lovers, and writers. They can help you find exactly what your child will find most interesting.

Chances are, you’ve heard all about Helen Keller, who became blind and deaf when she was still almost a baby. But did you know that she was also an activist, a performer, and a writer? Yep, and in “So Much More to Helen!” by Meeg Pincus, illustrated by Caroline Bonne-Műller (Sleeping Bear Press, $17.99), young readers ages 5-to-7 will get a good peek inside Keller’s childhood and the times in which she lived, and they’ll see what other awesome things Keller was known for in her long and accomplished life. Kids who love to eat, and 5-to-8-yearolds who like to help in the kitchen, will surely enjoy “Born Hungry” by Alex Prud’homme, illustrated by

ow, it is hard to believe that summer is already half over. As I worked in my garden this week, my thoughts drifted to cool-weather crops. With less than ninety days until the first frost, now is the time to prepare cool-weather crop Charlie seeds. If you grew broccoli, Gizenski beets, spinach, or lettuce this year, they should be harvested by now. You can use your newly found Brussel

space to grow your fall crops. I break cool crops down into two different categories, semihardy and hardy. Semi-hardy plants tend to be a leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, and beets. This group of cool weather crops can withstand temperatures down into the thirties and a single light frost. Hardy plants include vegetables like broccoli, sprouts, and cabbage. Hardy

the seedlings get too much sun and too much heat, they may not produce a plant. I use an old patio umbrella to keep them shaded from the hot afternoon sun. Your seedlings will also need to be watered frequently to help keep the roots cool. Something else I do is apply two to four inches of compost on top of the soil to help with moisture retention. If you have never grown cool weather crops, I highly recommend giving it a shot this fall. You may notice that your fall crop has more flavor than your spring crop. Happy Gardening!

plants can withstand temperatures that dive down into the twenties and multiple light frosts. If you were planning to sew fall seeds, it is not too late; however, I recommend you get them planted before next week’s edition of the Webb Weekly reaches your mailbox. If you are unsure, start by reading the seed package. Look for seeds with a fast maturity date since you will likely harvest them in about ninety days. You can also look for vegetable plants instead of starting from seed, which will save you growing time. Once planted, keep them in a shady part of your garden or under a patio roof. If

T

he police today investigated a robbery that took place at the Troisi tailoring establishment, 431 Pine Street, where entrance was made sometime during the night or early morning and goods valued at several hundred dollars were removed. It is believed that the affair occurred after midnight. The establishment occupies the middle storeroom of the Larrivee Building on Pine Street. The police learned that entrance was made from the rear. A wire screen covering a window was broken through and an instrument used to break the windowpane. The glass in the window is reinforced with wire. The hole was made large enough so that the thief could reach the latch on the inside. The window was opened, and the store ransacked.

Six suits of clothes, three of which were new, and three left at the store for repair, were removed by the thief or thieves. Materials and trousers were carried to the window but left in the store. The proprietor of the store was making an inventory to determine if materials were taken with the suits of clothes. The intruders left by the rear window. The army recruiting station in the federal building reported to the police last evening that a motorcycle with side car attachment owned by the recruiting station had been stolen from the front of the federal building. The vehicle is painted in the regulation olive drab and is a Harley-Davidson machine. The police also received a report that six watermelons were lying in the rear of the Plankenhorn bottling works in Newberry. An investigation to determine the owner is being made.

The Roving Sportsman… What’s Stressing Our Trees? By Jon Pries

W

hen was the most recent time you took a walk in your woods or a nearby forest or hiked along some of the logging roads in our area, state game lands, or state forests? If it was in the last few months, did you notice anything a bit unusual in the crowns or tops of the trees? Specifically, was there anything unusual looking about the leaves? Trees, just like humans, can be affected by various factors called stressors or disturbances. In the case of trees, these can include attacks by insects, drought, floods, windstorms, and fire. Recently, some of our area forests have been under extreme stress by an invasion of spongy moths. Added to that, several weeks of no rain have occurred, and with no rain in the near future forecast, there is a real concern for drought conditions. When trees are subjected to a disturbance (such as drought or insects chewing on their leaves), their capability to soak up carbon dioxide and therefore grow is greatly reduced. Further, these stressors will weaken a tree

and make it more susceptible to pest organisms or disease. If a drought continues long enough, both deciduous trees and conifers will shed leaves or needles, reducing their ability to photosynthesize. Unfortunately, throughout our region, there has been a continued activity of spongy moths and now, a prolonged period of no rain. The spongy moth caterpillars stripped the trees of their leaves, then transformed into the pupa stage, later hatched into male and female moths that would breed and allow the females to lay egg masses on the trees’ trunks and limbs. Once the leaves had been completely eaten by the caterpillars, the tree would expend its energy in an attempt to grow a replacement set of leaves. If this occurs, there is a real chance that the tree will not have enough energy to produce acorns in the same season. If a period of no rain continues long enough to produce drought conditions, the lack of needed moisture may also stress the tree and may also contribute to a reduced or total lack of acorn production for the season. A month or so ago, if you hiked in the woods throughout some of Lycoming

caterpillar attack will not produce fruit or nuts this year. That means no acorns, which deer, bears, and other wildlife count heavily upon to develop a thick enough layer of fat to carry them through the winter months. In the worst-case scenario, too many of these stressor occurrences will kill the trees, potentially leaving vast forest areas devoid of the acorns and other nuts and fruit that wildlife depends upon as their main food source. There is no effective way we can counter any drought conditions. As to the invasive spongy moths, there is only one way to effectively address the situation, and that is to do an aerial spraying of pesticides. It has to be done during a short window of opportunity in the spring, just after the caterpillars begin to appear from the egg masses and before they are too large to be affected by the pesticide. This past spring, there were vast areas that were not subjected to the defoliation by spongy moth caterpillars. But unfortunately, there were also large tracts of forests that were completely defoliated. If you had trees that were stressed by the spongy moth caterpillars this spring, I hope you will seriously consider aerial spraying next year. Not doing so just may result in the complete loss of your acorn and nut and fruit-producing trees!

County, you might have been witness to a very stressful activity in the overhead canopy of the trees. Not in all areas, but in all too many of our privately owned as well as state-owned forests, spongy moth egg masses were beginning to come alive! These minute, ¼-inch-long caterpillars were emerging by the thousands and would be carried by the wind to spread throughout the nearby trees. Then, they would work their way to the tops of the trees and to the end of the limbs and spend the next few weeks munching away until, in many cases, there was not a single leaf remaining on the tree. The springtime forests had an eerie appearance of winter conditions, with no visible leaves to be seen. The spongy moth invasion was prevalent last year and again this spring. That resulted in two seasons of backto-back heavy defoliation. And now, we seem to be in a continued drought condition in much of our area. Trees can withstand a stressor event from time to time and recover to continue growing and producing nuts or fruit in seasons to come. But, multiple disturbances will weaken a tree, and too many of these events will combine to eventually kill the tree. Should we be concerned? Yes, very much so. In the least, those trees that were subjected to the spongy moth

sure that none of these factors come as much of a surprise to serious hunters but let’s take a closer look. From the research I’ve seen, antler growth is relatively predictable. The average male whitetail will achieve about 30 percent of its antler potential at a year and a half. The greatest increase in antler growth generally comes in the following year when they hit about 60 percent of their potential and about 80 percent at three and one-half years of age. The 100 percent antler growth doesn’t occur until around age six and one-half; I’m sure that doesn’t come as much of a surprise but keeping a buck around that long is

often a surprise. I’m sure it’s also probably not much of a surprise that the racks begin decreasing in size after that sixth year due to aging. Naturally, there are exceptions to these figures since there are cases of bucks that never get past the velvet stage. These antlers are retained all year long and even “does” with antlers due to elevated testosterone levels. I’m not a deer shed hunter, but those who are will probably not be surprised by some other information I came across regarding deer antlers. According to some research done at the University of Nebraska, it was found

Free Loaner Cars We accept All Insurance Repair All Makes & Models

that older bucks shed their antlers sooner than younger bucks and that bucks tend to lose both sides of their racks within a relatively small area. For example, the average distance between a set of shed antlers was found to be 93 yards. Yearling buck sheds were found to be at an average of 59 yards apart, while older buck sheds were found to average a distance of 107 yards apart. So, will this increase my chances of bagging a bigger rack now that I have all this antler information? Not likely, but it is interesting to speculate on one’s potential as we look over the deer we see in our travels and on our trail cameras.

51 • Webb Weekly July 20, 2022

and hearing from other hunters, the potential for taking a pretty good rack seems to be increasing. I suspect that the changes made several years ago in our area requiring bucks to have three or more points on at least one side has likely contributed to the potential for more larger bucks in the herd. So what factors are actually responsible for antler growth and development? In an effort to learn more, I did a little reading and research and found that three factors basically decide antler size; a deer’s age, its genetics, and of course, nutrition or what it eats. I’m

was his trade partner Verdugo. Downs scored the game’s tying run on a Verdugo base hit. Two innings later, with runners on the corners and the Red Sox trailing 5-3, in the tenth inning, Downs, batting in Martinez’s former spot in the lineup, stroked his first Major League hit and RBI to pull the Red Sox within one run at 5-4. Two batters later, Verdugo again stepped to the plate and, this time, drove in Downs with the decisive run in the Red Sox 6-5 walk-off victory. Hollywood can’t make up this stuff – or can they? Jeter Downs beat Derek Jeter’s Yankees. The delighted rookie was ecstatic. “It’s pretty ironic. It’s kind of funny that my first big-league hit, RBI, and run came against the Yankees. I’ve never run so fast in my life. I was just running. Even if the third base coach would have stopped me, I don’t think I would have been able to stop. It was intense. Can’t write a better story.” But as Paul Harvey used to say – “here’s the rest of the story.” Prior to a previous game this season, Downs played with the Red Sox (he went 0-4); his childhood hero Derek Jeter himself tweeted him a message. That message read, “Congratulations and good luck…unless you’re playing the Yankees.” Not even Hollywood would dare to write this script.

53 • Webb Weekly July 20, 2022

of the game had a ‘Hollywood script ending’ written all over it. In a season in which the two long-time rivals are seeing their baseball fortunes going in different directions, the Yankees had come back to take a 3-2 into the bottom of the eighth inning. Enter the Hollywood writers. After super-star outfielder Mookie Betts, about to enter his free-agent year, turned down a 10-year, 300-million offer from the Red Sox in 2020, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In return, the Red Sox received outfielder Alex Verdugo and two prospects, catcher Connor Wong and infielder Jeter Downs. Since then, Verdugo has become a starter, while Wong and Downs have spent most of their time in the minor leagues. The 24-year-old Downs played his high school ball as a shortstop in Miami, Florida, and was named after Yankee great Derek Jeter. He had been a life-long Yankees fan. On the evening of July 9, Downs was pulled from the lineup in Wooster, Massachusetts, Boston’s AAA team, and at 5:30 p.m., told to report to the Red Sox. Downs jumped in his car for the 47-mile drive to Fenway Park. Along the way, he got stuck in traffic, arriving in Boston just minutes before game time. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Downs was inserted into the game as a pinch-runner for designated hitter J.D. Martinez who had doubled. At the plate
