West End’s Winning Ways

W

hat a fantastic sports year it’s been for so many teams from across our area. As we close out July and head to August, it’s always a lot of fun when we have local teams still on the diamond trying to play their way to a World Series. Congratulations to West End Babe Ruth’s 13-year-old All-Star team, who have already done just that and will compete at the Babe Ruth World Series in Glen Allen, Virginia. Lou Hunsinger has our cover story featured on page 4 as the boys will try to bring home West End Babe Ruth’s first World Series Title. West End has had amazing success since 2005, with currently nine teams reaching World Series, 21 teams winning state titles, and appearing at Mid-Atlantic Regionals. This first number could be added to as both the 14 and 15-year-old All-star teams were competing at Regional Finals as I was penning my column. I must add here that I am a huge believer in West End Baseball, as my sons reached a combined four World Series during their playing days. My family saw parts of our great Country we would have probably never visited if it wasn’t for the great people that make West End Baseball possible. They were special days as my kids were growing up that we shared with wonderful teammates, coaches, and families. I

treasure the memories, especially the time spent with my Father during Jimmy’s first World Series run to Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, when Hunter made his World Series appearance in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, about an hour and a half outside of Nashville, my dad had already left us. Incidentally, Jimmy holds a 3 to 1 advantage over Hunt on World Series appearances. The Babe Ruth World Series experience was just the icing on the cake for the players and coaches who put in so much time and hard work. As I look back, the opportunity to learn baseball on the big diamond after moving up from Little League, and to play and make friendships with kids from across the West Branch Valley, are two of the most important aspects of West End Baseball. I am a huge believer in both Little League and Babe Ruth and how they fit into a young baseball player’s life from the ages of 5 to 18. West End Baseball is the oldest organized league for 13- to 15-year-old players in our Nation. It actually began in 1943 when Carl Stotz organized a league for his first players from what was to be the basis for Little League Baseball. It became known as the West End Boy’s Hardball League until 1976 when it then became West End

Babe Ruth Baseball. Now back to the great people that make West End happen. Hitting leadoff in the lineup are Jim and Bonnie Winder. Jim is officially league president and Babe Ruth state commissioner. Jim Webb, Jr. Wife Bonnie is officially league treasurer and secretary, but her duties cover so much more than that as she keeps Jim on track. For 41 years, the couple has dedicated their time and efforts to the league. That is truly remarkable, and a heartfelt thank you to both. In talking baseball with Jim about West End past and present, he wanted me to recognize a long-serving group of volunteers that have gone above and beyond for the league in a multitude of ways. First up is Mike Sharrow. Mike has been involved for 45 years with West End, all in regard to umpiring. Next up are George Lepley, Tom Marnon, and Dale Diermeyer; all have been involved in the league for 27 years. George, whom I have known for many years, has managed both my sons during the regular season and World Series. He always made it as much about having fun and enjoying the journey as winning baseball games. Dale has been a coach, security, manager,

and player evaluation coordinator. Tom is vice president and his knowledge of baseball and rules is outstanding. Best wished to him as he recovers from surgery. Dave Cipriani has been involved in West End baseball as an umpire, manager, and coach for over 20 seasons. Scott Niklaus and Mark Rogers have also been a dedicated part of West End Baseball for 20 years. Jeff Heintzelman has 18 official years of service to the League as announcer and statistician. It goes without saying that an organization is only as good as its people. The continuity created by having this long-time group of dedicated volunteers has provided the foundation for West End Baseball. It is also important to continue to add new faces to any organization, which West End is always looking to do. In closing things out this week, Jim Winder is looking for donations to West End Baseball to curb the cost associated with reaching a World Series. It goes without sayi ng everything costs more in the world we live in today. Whether it is your business, organization, or just an individual contribution, if you are interested in helping the team or teams, a check can be written tto West End Baseball, 30 Eldred Street, Williamsport, PA 17701. If you have any questions, please give Jim Winder a call at 570-2202570. Good luck to all still playing! God Bless America.

Prepare Meals Together as a Family

L

ast week I talked about the importance of talking with and being involved with your children and how that can make warning signs of child sexual abuse more obvious and help the child feel more comfortable coming to you if something isn’t right. So let’s talk about an easy way to have some family fun while also spending quality time together, that can help open the line of communications with your kids. I am a big proponent of family dinners. I think it’s a fantastic way to spend time together while learning about and catching up with everyone’s days. But you can also have those moments while preparing dinner too! Cooking together can establish a no-pressure, safe space for conversation. Children can learn quite a bit from cooking, as preparing recipes can fortify what they’ve been learning in school. Family cooking nights also pose a great opportunity to create lasting memories. Some of those treasured experiences can be enjoyed in the kitchen alongside mom and/or dad. Added bonus, if you have a picky eater, cooking together as a family may

West End 13-Year Olds Win Berth In Babe Ruth World Series By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he West End Babe Ruth League has earned an enviable record for sending teams to postseason competition, and in some cases winning those competitions. This year’s 13-year-old All-Stars are continuing this splendid tradition this year by advancing to the Babe Ruth World Series as champions of the Mid-Atlantic Region, which they earned with a 4-0 win over the Hamilton-Burlington League AllStars. Webb Weekly asked West End Manage Marc Hess to provide a run down on the members of the team and what it meant to coach them to this Series. What follows are his comments: Trey Damschroder displays great speed on the bases, he’s a very aggressive baserunner. He covers a lot of ground in center field and is a

For the first time since the August 2020 Regional Police Study was completed they have provided a document for residents to review. Today, and in coming weeks, we will analyze this document. On page 8, the document states in part, “DCED recommends that it [regionalization] was feasible,” according to THEIR STUDY. This calls into question what was presented by Chief DeRemer on July 14, 2022. What is being offered by OLT Supervisors, as presented by Chief DeRemer, is not the August 2020 Department of Community and Economic Development Study. good contact hitter. Trey has one of the strongest arms on the field and is a jokester in the dugout. Deshaun White is a positive team player. He squares up the ball nearly every at bat. Deshaun is always putting pressure on his opponents with his speed on the bases and is a fantastic guy in the dugout. Briar Persing is definitely team leader and our number one pitcher. He works hard at all aspects of the game and is one of our best hitters. Briar can play anywhere we ask and is a great teammate and good role model on the team. LJ Hill is a great middle infielder and pitcher; he can locate pitches better than anyone on the team and gives us a lot of good at bats. LJ is always putting the ball in play and works very hard — I’m proud of him. Noah Kirby is a good first baseman and pitcher, who always hits the ball hard. Noah is one of the best hitters

base for the top of the lineup to hit him in. He has been working hard at learning a new position at 3rd base. He’s a good teammate and always talking on the field. Jaxson works hard, always gives 100%, and tries to pump the team up in the dugout. Mason Hess has had some big hits when called upon. He’s a great teammate and always looking to improve. Mason is hard working and very coachable. He puts the team first and will always do what is asked. Cade Lusk is a true coach’s player whether in the outfield or at the plate — you get 110%. He always does what is asked of him and has given us some key pinch hits. Cade is also a very important pinch runner for us. Kason Ulmer is the first kid you hear in the dugout — always cheering on his teammates. He’s a solid outfielder and runner on the bases. Kason is always ready and willing to go out and warm up the pitcher for next inning.

on the team — in starting role or relief, can come in and get the job done. Zack Neill is a great middle infielder with a strong at bat. Zack always throws strikes on the mound and comes up with some big hits at the plate. Nate Crowe has had many clutch hits and RBIs as the extra hitter. He’s very coachable. Nate is a great teammate and one of our ‘talkers’ in the dugout. Zion Hughes has transitioned well to the outfield making several plays that change the outlook of the game. He’s a good baserunner and his bat is getting hot. Zion is a solid hitter and is always putting the ball in play. Lincoln Miller is one of the best catchers around; he blocks everything and makes his pitchers job easier. Lincoln is always looking to improve and has a great understanding of the game. He is also becoming a vocal team leader — a very well-liked kid. Jaxson March finds a way to get on

now some of them have to come off the bench for the big hit, or to help their team and run the bases, lay a bunt down in a key situation, Just happy that it has all come together and they get to enjoy a World Series. “My coaches are amazing, Fred March is my right-hand man, Shane Miller is a great guy and can keep the kids ready to go and Mike Damschroder heads up the kids in the dugout to keep everyone ready.” The trip to the Mid-Atlantic tournament was not cheap. Hess spoke about that aspect saying, “We are always looking for donations to help offset the parents’ expenses. We just spent the last week in Atlantic City during the summer so rates were extremely high and now families will have to travel to the World Series in Virginia for 10 days. We have a donation letter that we will be putting out for donations; they can be sent to Marc Hess, 65 Vista Lane, Cogan Station PA 17728.”

Jahvon LaRosa has a good knowledge of the game, and whether it’s getting down a bunt, running the bases, playing defense he will get it done. Jahvon is very coachable, a great dugout mentor and teammate. “It’s an amazing group of kids that I have had the pleasure to coach a few of them over the years, and the rest we have played against throughout Little League,” Hess said about the team. “To finally get them all together on one team has been a dream come true. We have always thought we would have an opportunity to put this group together and know they would be able to win some games but to be heading to a World Series is awesome.” He continued, “The kids have worked very hard at practice to get where we are today. When you have 14 players on your team it can be tough because all 14 were starters on their regular season teams and

T

he Lycoming County Commissioners met for their weekly meeting on Thursday, July 14th, at 10:00 a.m. The agenda was not much different than any other in the past number of years. It opened with the standard protocols of prayer, pledge of allegiance, approval of previous meeting minutes, etc. At most of these meetings, there is a county employee or two who would receive some recognition or service awards, followed by the ‘business’ stuff — reports, action items, etc. The ‘big’ issue this particular day was the passage of a zoning ordinance related to solar facilities. This had been in the works for several months, and Mark Hass, the Development Services Supervisor for the Lycoming County Zoning Hearing Board, gave an excellent review of the new amendment ordinance. After some brief comments from the commissioners, it passed quickly. But before this action, something else happened. On the agenda were three individuals who were to be recognized. Generally, these recognition ceremonies are upbeat and affirming, often with colleagues of the person being recognized in attendance. Yet, this day’s recognition of three individuals was rather different. They spoke volumes about what makes

Lycoming County someplace special. The first was Jim Schriner, who was recognized for thirty years in the Adult Probation Department. Listening to his many accomplishments was absolutely awesome, especially in his commitment to school training for every school in the county. What made Schriner’s recognition so interesting was to note how highly praised he was by his superiors and yet teased so actively by his colleagues. (Losing one of his front teeth must have been one for the books.) When Schriner received his award and got the obligatory picture with the commissioners, he insisted that every single person in his department who were at the ceremony should also get in the picture with him. It was a classy act that affirmed

COUNTY HALL what the others had been telling about him. The second individual to be recognized was Wendy Hastings, who was retiring from the Office of Public Safety, arguably one of the most important components of county government. The 911 center, emergency management, and emergency medical services all fall under the direction of Jeff Hutchins, who became Director of Public Safety on February 23, 2020, just a couple of weeks before the COVID shutdown. Key people in the department, such as Wendy Hastings, kept the wheels running in the midst of the chaos that soon materialized. Listening to the accolades that ‘Hutch’ recited about Hastings was pretty astounding. He walked through the number of activities that she has been responsible over the past decades, which covered everything imaginable from floods, hurricanes, and of course, pandemics. Three years of pressure like this would be more than most of us could put up; Wendy endured three decades of it! It is remarkable how hard these individuals work so we can rest peacefully and safely in our homes every night. The third recognition was for a ten-year service award for Keely Hitchens from the Veterans Affairs office. Lycoming County’s VA office is arguably one of the best in the entire state of Pennsylvania. For years it has been recognized for the number of benefits it has been able to access for county veterans. Keely is a key aide

to Mike McMunn, the department director. Given the lofty accolades placed upon the two previous honorees, it was hard to see how Keely Hitchens could stand out. Yet as the presentation was made to Keely, the feature that was highlighted was not just her dedication to her job and others around her, but the incredible beauty of her personality. This lady has a character that causes others to brighten just by being around her. Commissioner Metzger summed it up when he described Keely as “a woman of her faith, and who lives the fruit of that faith every day. She is one of the sweetest, kindest, most helpful persons you will meet in your entire lifetime.” In the hundreds of presentations I have witnessed in the past decade, I never remember anyone more highly praised for their character. Reflecting on these three faithful county employees, it demonstrates what makes Lycoming County so special. Doing a good job is certainly important, but when it is done with commitment, professionalism, dedication, and character, it becomes more than a job. This is serving in the sincerest meaning of the word. Sometimes the most routine meeting can come alive with pride when the light gets to shine for just a moment on the individuals that work so diligently and faithfully for our benefit in Lycoming County government offices. They deserve all the recognition they can get.

FAITH

showed us what that looks like with Levi (Luke 5) and Zacchaeus (Luke 19), and the woman at the well (John 4). Jesus loved everyone, and you are free to love everyone too! By the way, you’ll probably get criticized by judgmental religious people for loving everyone. They’ll accuse you of keeping bad company. Jesus caught criticism from that bunch too – and that puts you in very good company. See Luke 5:27-32. Second, it’s hard to love because we are naturally selfish. Our fallen, sin-

ful nature is bent toward self. See Romans 8:5-8 and I Corinthians 2:14. If we’re going to love selflessly over the long haul, then our nature must be changed. Third, it’s hard to love because we’ve all been burned. Love makes us vulnerable, and fickle people have burned us in the past. Like the proverbial cat who jumped on a hot stove, we will no longer jump on a cold stove either. We are “Once bitten, twice shy.” Fourth, because love is costly. Love costs money, but more significantly,

VETERANS BENEFIT CENTER We Serve Any And All Veterans And Family Members From Any Time Period! WE OFFER ASSISTANCE WITH:

love costs time and energy. The Priest and Levite in the parable of the Good Samaritan were important people. They had places to go and people to see. See Luke 10:29-37. Stopping to help the man who had been beaten and robbed was just going to cost too much – so they walked right by. Fifth, because judging others makes me feel better about me. Like the Pharisee who was thankful he was “not like other people — robbers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector.” See Luke 18:11. It’s so sad that we have to tear someone else down to feel better about ourselves. Loving everyone is hard, but it’s not impossible. Here are some steps to help us love more: Step #1: Be changed. Romans 12:1-2. God’s transformational grace (Word of God, Prayer, Holy Spirit, Body of Christ, Mission of God) changes us, so we no longer conform to the selfish pattern of the world. It takes time, but God’s grace is able to get it done. If loving is hard, then press harder into God’s grace. Doing so requires prioritizing God’s grace into our lives – and that takes sacrifice. This is why we are called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. Step #2: Be open. Healthy vulnerability requires the strength and con-

fidence of personal awareness and purpose. The vulnerability offered by Jesus was not a result of weakness or neediness. Absolutely not! His vulnerability was empowered by the certain knowledge of who He was and what He had come to do. See Philippians 2:1-11. It allowed Him the freedom to love and serve openly. Do you know who you are? Do you understand your divine purpose? If you do, then offer love freely and courageously as you open yourself to fickle and messy people who may burn you. Jesus knew that doing so would be risky — and He’s calling on us to be open anyway. Step #3: Be available. Intentionally create margin in your life. The Good Samaritan also had places to go and people to see, but he created margin in his life — either by design or sacrifice — so he would have the time and resources available to love someone else. At the end of the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus said, “Go and do likewise.” If you’re like me, you’ve got growing to do when it comes to loving everyone. Let’s lean hard into God’s grace. Let’s remember who we are and the purposes God has given to us. Let’s take steps today that will help us love more and more. By God’s grace, we can do it.

if you are an avid reader, you know all about my upper lip sweat and now know about my thighs being besties. But, something you don’t know is that I don’t love a lot of heat in my food either. I am not talking about temperature heat; I am talking about spice heat. I love me some mild wings or mild buffalo chicken dip. That’s about it for spice for me. My husband loves buffalo sauce: hot wings, buffalo chicken cheesesteaks, and bottles of Franks Red Hot on everything. While surfing Pinterest, I found a recipe for buffalo chicken bombs. I thought to myself, “Chris would love these!” I enjoy buffalo chicken dip, so I thought I would surprise him some night and make these. I baked my chicken over the weekend when I made homemade chicken salad for my son’s motocross race on Saturday. I saved two of the seasoned breasts for dinner on Tuesday evening. Our kids were out riding their dirt bikes, and my husband was in the garage working. Ty came in first, sweaty and hungry. He closes our dining room sliding glass door, takes his shoes off, and looks over as I am cooking on the stove. “Is that what I think it is, Mom?” he asked. I knew he had no idea what it was. As he walked over, he looked in the skillet and was bummed that they were not my

homemade sticky buns. “Sorry, buddy,” I told him. “It’s OK. My birthday is next week, and I know you will be making me a whole pan to myself,” he replied. Next comes my husband through the same door. As he walked in, I saw him glancing at the table, but he didn’t say anything. At this point, I had everything on the table as my family was getting washed up for dinner. We sat down, and Ty was the first person to ask what we were having after prayer. I asked them who was going to be the first person to take a bite out of these biscuits. Chris volunteered, but Tyler beat him to it. “Mom, it tastes like buffalo sauce!” Chris then bit into one and thought I had just thrown some sauce in the homemade chicken salad I had made over the weekend and shoved that puppy into a biscuit. I laughed and told him I hadn’t done that. I took a recipe from Pinterest and made it my own. Adding the bacon was brilliant to give it that crunch, and making the top a garlic sauce gave it a boom factor. I wish I could show you guys the video of me breaking one of these open. My inbox and post on Instagram exploded, and everyone wanted the recipe. (You can see it at AndreasCountryHomeCooknFitness on Instagram with the link to the recipe on

my website.) My husband’s final remark about dinner was this, “I have to say, babe, that when I walked in and saw the table, I knew that there was no way you only made a pan of biscuits, salad, and fruit. Little did I know what was inside of them, and I can’t believe you actually made something with buffalo sauce in it. I loved it. Thanks so much for doing that for me.” I have to say I really enjoyed them. Don’t let the hot sauce fool you. It’s a perfect combo with the ranch, garlic, hot sauce, and biscuit. You won’t be sorry. The movie’s other strength is its lovely 1950s production design, with nostalgic cars, street scenes, and costumes beautifully filmed by cinematographer Felix Wiedermann — and undergirded by some grand old music from that era. A film about dreams, hard work, and the emptiness of inherited wealth, “Mrs. Harris” feels like a loving throwback to a kinder, quieter, simpler time. Indeed, in a season of superheroes and skyhigh action, this gem’s release feels a bit like the modest Mrs. Harris slipping in among Parisian high society. Here’s hoping the film makes as big a splash as she did.

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to the lack of nutrient flow.

they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. Treatment at Twin Hills can include light therapy. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. Figure 2: The blood vessels will grow back around the nerve much like a plant’s roots grow when watered.

she reminded him of a woman who was kind and comforting in his youth. Perhaps nowadays, it’s considered taboo to compliment a lady for being servantlike and motherly, but Ada’s umbrage sure feels out of place in this movie’s time period. On the upside, the writing quartet has added an extremely likable character named Archie, played to perfection by Jason Isaacs. What’s more, they took Gallico’s ending — which is satisfying though slightly downbeat — and made it happier by weaving in a quiet plot strand that is easy to overlook; so it also comes across as a surprise.

Volunteer Team Hosts Set for the 75th Little League Baseball® World Series

L

ittle League® has announced the official pairings for the 2022 Volunteer Team Hosts who will support the teams during the 75th Anniversary of the Little League Baseball® World Series this August. The primary focus of the Little League Baseball World Series is placed squarely on the experience of the players from the 20 teams that come to South Williamsport, and it is up to the volunteer team hosts and utility hosts to make sure those players have a Little League experience that lasts a lifetime. Two team hosts are responsible for ensuring that each team is on time for games and practices, arranging their team’s uniform fittings, helping with the coordination of the media activities, and making sure that many other daily tasks go smoothly for the players, coaches, and managers. The utility hosts assist in all other dayto-day activities. Throughout the course of their time in Williamsport, the hosts forge a lasting bond with their players, coaches, and managers over the course of the Little League Baseball World Series, and many stay in touch after the World Series is over. Earlier this summer, on June 13, the official team designations for the 2022 Little League Baseball World Series were randomly drawn by a group of volunteer team hosts prior to the 28th Little League

which comes in travel sizes so you can mist yourself while on the go. And don’t neglect your lips. Balms, chapsticks, and glosses with SPF are widely available. If you want to add a bit of color to your face, check out Fresh Sugar’s tinted lip treatment with SPF 15. If you’re more in the market for simple protection, then Banana Boat’s sport ultra-lip balm has your back (or should I say mouth?). Protecting your skin from the sun daily is extremely important, and while SPF makeup and tinted products can make you look and feel great on their own, they should not be your sole source of sunscreen. Using a facial sunscreen and SPF cosmetics will give you protection to the places and lengths makeup doesn’t reach.

your full face. Get around the mouth, under the eyes, and don’t forget your neck. Then apply as little or as much tinted sunscreen, like BareMinerals Complexions Rescue, or SPF makeup, such as Clinique Even Better Clinical Serum Broad Spectrum foundation, as you feel you need. But what about the “re-apply sunscreen every two hours” rule? Do you rub sunblock on top of your makeup? Do you cleanse your face completely and redo sunscreen and foundation every two hours? Should you just stay inside all day and binge “Virgin River” episodes on Netflix? That last one is up to you, but the answer for reapplying is to use an SPF powder such as Avene’s mineral tinted compact SPF 50 or a setting spray like Coola’s sunscreen spray,

t wasn’t even your idea. If you’d had your druthers, in fact, you would’ve chosen another course of action, but the decision was out of your control. The situation was picked not by you but for you and though it wasn’t your idea, you’ll press on. As in the new book “Incomparable Grace” by Mark K. Updegrove, there’s no option but you’ll do your best. It was blisteringly cold on the day that John F. Kennedy was inaugurated. After he took the oath, he removed much of his cold-weather wear to give a brief speech; afterward, he departed for various celebrations while his wife, who’d recently given birth, retired to rest. “Jack” hadn’t initially wanted the job of President, and he wasn’t originally supposed to have it. According to his father, Jack’s eldest brother was perfect for office but when Joe Jr. was killed in World War II, Joe Sr.’s focus turned to Jack. All nine of the Kennedy children grew up with the idea that politics were essential to the family, so while Jack

seemed sometimes to grouse about this assumption that he wanted to be President, he ultimately embraced it. Insiders say that he was driven, always wanting to be in “the center of the action,” and for this, Americans gave him stellar approval ratings. But within weeks of the inauguration in 1961, JFK was faced with his first crisis in the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. He had to deal with a growing Civil Rights Movement that year, and unrest in Vietnam as well as troubles with Russia and East Germany. His own health issues plagued him, as did his father’s.

lavishly complimentary to the Kennedy legacy. While other political players circa 1955 to 1964 make their appearances here, JFK’s presidency — including his mistakes and trials — is the focus of this book, which helps to remind readers that there wasn’t a perpetually-glossy sheen to Camelot. Hints of what could have happened, in fact, seem to hover just on the edge of some paragraphs; so do more than a few great anecdotes that will make historians grin with delight. Readers may also be surprised to see that nothing is new in politics — there are parallels for the drawing here, fascinating evidence remains and for history-lovers, reading “Incomparable Grace” is a good idea.

NO JOB TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL!

39 • Webb Weekly July 27, 2022

The following year was no better: early in 1962, Kennedy tangled with steel executives and the media wasn’t kind. The South boiled with Civil Rights issues; the Kremlin and Cuba forced him to face a real possibility of nuclear war. And during all this, his health issues worsened, and Kennedy was in pain nearly all the time. He would not see the end of 1963... In the past near-60 years, hundreds, if not thousands of books about the Kennedy assassination have packed bookshelves tight. “Incomparable Grace” touches upon that event briefly, but only after taking readers back and around. Certainly, author Mark K. Updegrove shows that his subject possessed the trait that gives this book its title but still, it isn’t

arenting is hard work on any given day and with recent societal stressors including the ongoing pandemic, parents are left feeling overwhelmed, cognitively and emotionally drained, and physically exhausted. Being a parent is a full-time, 24/7 job that involves constantly placing the needs of your children and others in your life ahead of your own. Parental fatigue and burnout are very real and result from our choices to consistently sacrifice ourselves to the detriment of our own well-being. The problem is that most people think that this is a normal part of parenting, a badge of honor per say. This culture leads parents to feel weak, inadequate, ashamed, or guilty for being tired or asking for help. However, suppressing and dismissing these feelings will only take toll on your mental and physical health in the long run. Signs and Symptoms of Parental Burnout Parental burnout is the physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion that one feels from the chronic stress of parenting and the direct result of continually spreading ourselves too thin. This often manifests with emotional distancing from the child/ children, irritability or irrational emotional responses, mental fog or forgetfulness,

feelings of anxiety or depression, and a sense of being a “bad” or ineffective parent. The cognitive and emotional symptoms and compound stress can also affect our physical health. While our bodies are equipped to handle stress, we can easily become overwhelmed when we are continually operating in “survival mode.” The prolonged release of stress hormones can begin to have lasting effects mentally, including confusion, difficulty remembering and concentrating, depression, sleep disturbances, hostility, and obsessive behaviors, as well as many physical symptoms including hormonal imbalances, weight gain or loss, chronically poor sleep, and increased risk of serious health conditions, like heart disease and diabetes. Tips to Combat Burnout Most parents are likely to experience mildto-moderate parental burnout, especially in their child’s early years. The good news is that parental burnout is temporary. Consider the following tips to help manage your feelings, stress and the demands associated with parenting: – Find time for yourself and do not feel guilty for taking care of your own needs. You cannot be on duty 24/7. – Eat nutritious food, exercise daily, and get adequate sleep every night. – Find someone to share your experiences with who is in a similar situa-

for anxiety and depression may also be prescribed if these conditions accompany tinnitus. A few simple steps can be taken to help prevent tinnitus or to keep symptoms from worsening. First, use hearing protection whenever you are operating loud equipment such as a lawn mower, leaf blower, or some other machinery. Over-the-ear protection is best. Also, turn down the volume when listening to music, especially when using headphones or earbuds. Last, limit alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine as these substances can affect blood flow and contribute to tinnitus. ACES Dominican Plate Dinner To Be Held Monday, August 1 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he Dominican Republic is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, and its needs are great. One organization that tries to aid in the effort to alleviate this poverty is ACES North American. The organization is a Williamsportbased not-for-profit working specifically in the Dominican Republic on projects highlighting health and education. ACES is currently involved in two main projects. Tucked in the Dominican central mountains of Jarabacoa Province lies a tiny village called Angosto, where education opportunities were non-existent just a few years ago. Now, a young couple from the region is creating a community center where kids can safely go for classes several days each week and where the community can come together to build solidarity. Says that young couple, “This center is extremely important for the welfare of this community. It gives us a place to grow together.” This worthy organization will hold a special fundraiser — The Dominican Plate Dinner with the Crosscutters. This annual fundraising gala will be on August 1, 2022, at the Genetti Hotel ballroom in downtown Williamsport. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will feature typical Dominican food, emcee Gabe Sinicropi, Urie Kline, and Los Gatos Gordos live band,

an extensive silent auction, a live auction by Sam and Dawn Astin, table trivia, Name That Tune, and lots of fun! ACES North America sponsors this event in collaboration with the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Cutters provide lots of silent auction treasures and a contingent of players to mingle and serve. If you’re a Cutters fan, this up-close-and-personal event is for you! “The Williamsport Crosscutters staff, players, and coaches are honored to lend their support each year to the Dominican Plate event to benefit ACES North America. Linell and her team put on a great event that benefits a very worthy cause,” Gabe Sincropi, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, told Webb Weekly. Here is some more about ACES projects in the Dominican Republic. The center at Angosto is a cinder block building that was built by community members and ACES members in 2020, just before the pandemic canceled travel. Men and women alike (both Dominican and American) carried concrete blocks, buckets of sand, gravel, and concrete uphill to waiting masons. Many of the Dominican workers were astonished at how hard American women could work! The finished product provides meeting rooms, a game and gathering area, and a community kitchen. School students are using it, along with a Kids’ Club, women’s groups, the community neighborhood council, sports

studies about the countries that highlight the particular craft project, history about countries, etc. They also learn social skills for their own culture. The children love the process! Gradually, the El Taller project has also grown into a classroom approach as well as a visiting artist series at the local public library. In the classrooms, students do the same arts and crafts projects, and the schoolteachers plan specific material that accompanies the projects. School administrators in the Las Terrenas area also love El Taller and would like ACES to provide the workshop to all elementary school students in the area – more than 3,000 students! One principal declares, “The students who participate in El Taller

are engaged like never before!” She credits ACES with significant advancement in learning in the Las Terrenas area. ACES North America is a small group of concerned individuals that came together in 2005 after seeing and hearing about the education deficit in the Dominican Republic. With small donations and events like the Dominican Plate Dinner, they have provided neighborhood health clinics, food outreaches, a small neighborhood elementary school, disease-resistant coffee plants, sports equipment, work groups, medical equipment, school equipment, and much more. One of the mantras of ACES North America is our efforts to do so much with so little! Looking ahead, the organization’s members

are planning several service trips that will involve light work and lots of eco-tours to learn about past ACES project successes and to help plan ways to assist in the future, as well as to observe and learn about the Dominican Republic’s reality away from famous resorts. To learn more about those trips or about anything ACES, contact Linell Stabler at 570-419-1218, Sue Myers at 570-220-4434, or Mark Uhland at 570-444-9347. ACES website is acesna.org, and you’ll find even more information there. To reserve tickets for the Dominican Plate Dinner, please use the website’s reservation portal – www.acesna.org/getinvolved/ fundraisers/email. Hope to see you at the gala!

groups, and business groups. It truly is a center for this growing community! ACES will continue to support the Kids’ Club and other educational efforts. Another community outreach of ACES is in the coastal fishing village of Las Terrenas in the Samana Province. Addressing the issue of too many children who cannot afford to attend school, ACES started a program called El Taller (The Workshop) in 2019. Using the medium of arts and crafts, community teachers and volunteers provide a safe space for children once or twice a week to create art projects while using typical educational subjects as background for the projects. While the children are creating, they’re also learning about arithmetic for measuring, social

t has been said that “The only thing that is constant is change!” It may take a while, but eventually, most things do change. Area hunters are truly blessed with State Game Lands encompassing thousands of acres nearby where they can hunt. That acreage has been paid for by money generated by hunting license sales and should remain for hunters’ use for generations to come. But what happens when the forests on that land undergo changes that negatively affect the food and habitat that is there? Beech trees throughout the state have been suffering for years from beech bark disease, which eventually kills 90-93% of all of the older trees, thus eliminating beech nuts as a food source for deer, bear, turkeys, grouse, and squirrels. The ash trees have been attacked by the emerald ash beetle, which is now destroying all of our ash trees. Wooly adelgid is a small insect spreading through our forests and killing hemlock trees. And now, the gypsy moths have been on the increase, defoliating oak and other trees. Several years in a row of this defoliation could kill a tree. And on it goes. This means that on our Game Lands, you may have to shift from your past “honey holes” to a new location in those tracts of land. Private property in the forms of farmland and woodlands changes ownership from time to time, either through inheritance,

sale of a property to another individual or to a developer, or the occasional donation of the land to a conservancy. For those hunters who have had great hunting success on private property, there may be the possibility that their hunting access may not be available in the future. There are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to try to line up some private property for future hunting access. Make a good first impression. Don’t show up on the farmer’s porch steps the day before hunting season, and expect to be welcome. Such short notice is disrespectful to a landowner. Over the summer months is the ideal time to attempt to gain access to a new hunting property. Instead of dropping by just before hunting season, go now in hopes of gaining access to hunt coyotes or groundhogs. Most landowners would be very happy to have someone help eliminate groundhogs that burrow under the foundations of buildings or dig holes in pastures used by their cattle. Very few property owners would balk at the idea of someone eliminating coyotes on their land. Begin a relationship with a landowner by reducing the number of varmints or vermin on his land, and it just might lead to a friendship that will allow access for fall hunting of turkeys or deer. Farmers are busy and sometimes too busy to take time to hunt. But, they very well may like to have some fresh venison steaks or backstrap to serve up for dinner! Sharing your harvest, especially when it comes from

Are there any days of the week that they have already reserved for someone else or a family member, or will you be allowed access anytime? Make sure you know where you can and cannot park a vehicle. They are generally active all year round. They do not hibernate, but in extreme cold, they may enter into a shallow torpor state to preserve body temperature. On occasion, I have people ask me

field, but Jean was a bit reluctant to do so. Kevin said he’d be glad to play catch with me. An avid Red Sox fan, I immediately saw the Yankees cap he was wearing but decided this opportunity was too good to pass up. So, we took to the field and played catch as our wives’ cameras caught the impromptu moment for posterity. On the other side of the Field of Dreams cornfield is the field MLB has constructed for their showcase game, similar to the MLB Classic held each year at Bowman Field. This year the game between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds will be played on August 11. I struck up a con versation with a security guard mentioning that in Williamsport each summer, MLB plays a similar game during the Little League

World Series “I’m very familiar with that game and watch it on TV every year,” was the response. “In fact, the operational crew that is here for our games departs to Williamsport to get things ready for your game.” We soaked up the inviting atmosphere for several hours, watching families enjoying themselves and seeing the satisfaction of parents playing catch with their children. It was a timeless moment all created by a fictional film that has left a legacy upheld by the pilgrimages of more than 100,000 coming to visit each year. A few years after the movie was made, the film’s star, Kevin Costner, remarked during an interview, “I believe there is a gentle call to come here.”
