Taking Time to Remember

I

don’t think anything really prepares you for the passing of a parent, especially one you were close with. This even applies when you have time to mentally prepare as their days are drawing short, as was the case with my Father. As I got my thoughts in order to pen my column for the beginning of August, the first thing that came to me was Happy Birthday, Dad. If my Father were still with us, he would have turned 78 on August the 2nd. It’s beyond belief that this October will mark ten years since he left us. I realize and understand the blessing it was to have my Father with me as long as I did. I wish I would have been a better son and not butted heads with him as much as I did. This especially applies to the business world and us working together. I think any family members that work together can understand this. I wish I would have spent more time with him doing things he enjoyed. This includes playing golf and going racing when he would ask me. He loved both hill climbs and going fast around the track. Both of which made me nervous thinking of him doing so. But I should have made the time to attend; of course, that also means I would be recruited into his pit crew.

Back to the golfing thing, I just didn’t have the patience for the sport at that point in my life, nor do I have it now. It might have also been that after working together with Dad, we needed to take a little break from each other. He was very tough on me, and the older I get, the better I understand. My Father loved baseball. The love of the game goes back generations within the Webb family and continues to carry on. We shared special days together as I was in the outfield and my Dad managed the team. We had a lot of fun, won a lot of baseball games, and ate a lot of Pudgies Pizza. He was tough on me on the diamond also. I remember a time I ignored a bunt sign and hit a double that drove in the tying run, me being the game-winner standing on 2nd. Before I could even think about taking the next step, I was gone. My Dad couldn’t call time fast enough; I should say my Manager couldn’t call time fast enough to get me out of the game for ignoring that bunt sign. As he was coaching 3rd and I passed him, he had his arms crossed, just glaring at me. I knew better than to make eye contact as he was red hot. I also knew not to swing through the bunt sign again. Incidentally, we scored the winning run two pitches later,

which helped with my Dad’s mood. All I got was, “You know better than that; I bet you never do it again.” Which was a win in my mind as I thought it was going to be much worse. My Father and I had a Jim Webb, Jr. special bond over baseball, which continued on with his grandsons. He loved watching them play and sharing the game with them. My Dad had aged and, of course, as most old coaches do, mellowed out a little bit. Him and Jimmy had a very special relationship, and of course, Dad would always give me the coaching advice. Hunter was still young, but he definitely saw his potential. Those were very special days in the Webb house. That is the one thing I miss most since my Dad’s passing — him being a grandfather to Hunter and Jimmy. There have been so many milestones in their lives that I would have loved to have him see. He would have been so proud. It goes without saying I have also missed being able to call my Dad and ask for his advice regarding my children, business, and life in general. He had a great ability to break things down and provide advice or a solution to a problem. This usually culminated over a cup of coffee with a conversation. As we both grew older, either he became better at explaining

things, or I became a better listener. I would love to have his take on the Biden administration and all the goings on over the last three years. I guarantee he would be even more fired up than when I swung through that bunt sign. That leads me to thanking everyone that continues to share stories with me about my Father. Through this, I’ve learned many things about him I didn’t know. I also appreciate those that compare our writing styles. Quite honestly, Dad was a much better writer than I am. I’ve done the best I can in filling some pretty big shoes. I have often wondered how he would coach me up on my articles. As I began my journey through life, I took time for granted. I believe this is somehow built into our human nature, so we don’t worry about mortality. Most of us hope for a long journey with family, kids, grandkids, and even greatgrandkids and that we have plenty of time here on God’s green Earth to share with each other. My Father always told me the older you get; the faster the years fly by. He was right on with this piece of advice. I am now going to take it a step further. Please do not allow all the distractions and nonsense of today’s world to take your peace and waste your time. Make your time count and spend it with your loved ones, even if it may require doing something you really don’t want to. God Bless America.

It’s Not Time…But It’s Time… By Steph Nordstrom

isten, I don’t want to think about it. You don’t want to think about it. But, alas, it’s time to start thinking about it. If you’ve been in a store lately, you know exactly what I’m talking about — the dreaded back to school. If you are sending your little one off to kindergarten, then I’m sure the stress and anxiety are real. So, let’s discuss some tips that may make those first few days a little easier. Attend orientation or related events. Compared to preschools and daycares, elementary and primary schools are huge! And that may be scary for the littles. Attending kindergarten orientation or related events as a family can help children see their classrooms, meet their teacher and potentially their classmates. If they have some semblance of an idea where they are headed before the first day, it may make the first day of school a little smoother. Avoid lengthy goodbyes. I know it’s difficult, and you cry all you want later, but drawing out goodbyes as kids get on the bus or walk into school will ultimately make it harder on children. Limit your goodbye to a hug and kiss and some words of encouragement. Keep the emphasis on the positive and the fun that’s to be had, so kids arrive at school in a good frame of mind. And then, once they are off for the day, feel free to have a good cry and treat yourself to a fancy coffee to make yourself feel better. Make sure they know and understand what the end-of-the-day plan is. Whether that’s

you or another family member picking them up from school or the bus stop, or if they are heading to after-school care — whatever the plan is, be sure to go over it with them so they are confident in what to do and where to go when the day is done. You may also want to check out some Kindergarten Checklists to see where your child is in relation. Now, let me say this before I get to a list I found. Every child develops differently at different times. Just because your child isn’t ticking every box doesn’t mean they aren’t ready for kindergarten or will struggle. These are just some basics and a way for you to see where your kiddo is and what they may need to focus on this year. Language skills – Speak in complete sentences and be understood by others most of the time – Use words to express needs and wants – Understand two-step directions – Make comparisons and describe relationships between objects like big/little, under/over, and first/last – Recite the alphabet and identify most of the letters – Recognize and try to write their own name – Recognize when two words rhyme (like cat and bat) – Start to connect letter sounds to letters (like the sound of the first letter in their name) Math skills – Count from 1 to 10 without skipping numbers – Match a number to a group of five or fewer items

– Recognize and name basic shapes – Understand more than and less than – Arrange three objects in the right order – Name or point to the colors in a box of eight crayons Self-care skills – Use the bathroom and wash up on their own – Get dressed on their own (but may still need help with buttons, zippers, and shoelaces) – Know and can say their name and age Social and emotional skills – Separate from a parent or caregiver without getting overly upset – Interact with other kids – Pay attention for at least five minutes to a task an adult is leading, like listening to directions for an activity or discussing the day’s weather during circle time – Use a pencil or crayon with some control – Use scissors – Copy basic shapes – Make distinct marks that look like letters and write some actual letters, especially the ones in their name Since we do still have around four weeks before school starts, now is also the time to get back into nighttime routines with all the kids, regardless of whether they are headed to kindergarten or high school. Especially for the littles, helping them get used to a new schedule now will help save some frazzled nerves later and allow you some time to work out the ‘kinks’ of a new routine. For the older kids, you don’t want to wait until the last minute for them to figure out that 3:00 a.m. Fortnite and noon wake-ups are soon to be a thing of the past. There is still plenty of summertime fun time left to be had, but it doesn’t hurt to start a little prep for the upcoming school year.

35th Loyalsock Valley Antique Machinery Association Show By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

f you enjoy the roar and belching of engines and like antique farm machinery on display and in action, then the Loyalsock Valley Antique Machinery Association’s (LVAMA) new show grounds at 899 Lower Bodines Road, Trout Run will be the place for you from Thursday, August 4 to Sunday, August 7. Each LVAMA show has a feature tractor, and this year’s Feature Tractor is Silver King and Oddballs and Orphans. The Feature Garden tractor is Bolens. The engine Feature is Side Shaft Engines. “The show is growing and doing very well at our new location with new and more elaborate displays every year,” Joe Belzer, LVAMA president, told Webb Weekly. “We have also acquired a new property in Ralston where we are starting a museum. The name of the new museum is the Central Pennsylvania Museum of Agriculture and Industry. We have a large focus on local historical Agricultural and industrial aspects such as farming, Mining, and oil exploration, along with lumber heritage that our area is rich in. Our first event will

be held there on September 30, October 1st, and 2nd.” He said as for new things this year, they have a new pulling track and will have many new classes of pulling. They have steam engines back at their show this year and will have their steam and spark show at dusk. They have a growing engine display section, a garden tractor display section, a flea market, and food vendors. They also have a lumberjack competition on Saturday and tractor pulls on Friday and Saturday nights. The event will also include live music. Things kick off with an opening ceremony conducted by a Marine Corps Color Guard on Friday, August 5. The admission price to the event is $5 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. “One thing that we make sure to emphasize in our club is our volunteers — they mean everything to us. We are a 100 percent volunteer organization; without them, we would be nothing,” Belzer added. Each day the show runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Machinery Show. According to lvamassoc.org, “Many years ago, Dan

Sawmill was returned to their family to help ensure its preservation. Different Hit and Miss engines and Tractor manufacturers are spotlighted every year, with visitors learning about various types of equipment. Guests learn about the common machinery used today, along with pieces that are rarely seen or used, threshing machines which prepare oats, a bailer, and numerous other machines. Families will enjoy arriving in horse-drawn wagons from the parking areas. Visitors can experience the Shingle Mill and Box and Bat making exhibits or stroll thru the flea market and find everything from old tractor parts to crafts, toys, and new items. The possibilities are limitless. There are special rules regarding dogs at the show. Dogs are not permitted at any time on the show grounds, flea markets, and food vending areas, except for all service dogs. The only dog policy exception is for campers and flea market vendors defined herein. Not the general public or visitors. Carey and Max Swisher met while trucking farm equipment. Both Dan and Max shared an interest in farm equipment and enjoyed going to different machinery shows to experience a past way of life. An appreciation grew along with the desire to create a similar experience in the Williamsport area. Together Vonnie Aikey, Joan Day, Russell and Ruth Houseknecht, and Gene Berry gathered in Dan’s living room to discuss their common interests. They agreed having an antique machinery show in this area would be a great idea. With that thought began the research to see where these shows took place: the towns, the physical location, the dates of other similar shows, and other ideas for crowd-pleasing activities. When all the data was collected and processed, the date and location were set for the first LVAMA show.” The first show was held on Route 87 at Dan Carey’s property. The original event showcased 20 tractors, a few Hit and Miss engines, and antique cars. Another important feature at the LVAMA show is the lumberjack event and an antique sawmill. In the show’s history, there have been two mills donated by Winter’s Lumber and Easton and Carey Lumber. The Winter Sawmill runs with a saw used for over four generations. These sawmills are run mainly by steam engines, but sometimes tractors will supply the power. Recently the Winter

aving a visitation or viewing can be of great value and an essential element of the healing pro-

cess for bereaved family members. A visitation can be formal, informal

and even include special music. You may choose to share photos, a memorial tribute video, or personal items that demonstrate your loved oneʼs life and values. For example, if your loved one was a quilter, an artist, or a collector, this is the perfect opportunity to showcase his or her lifeʼs work. If your loved one enjoyed sports, golf, fishing, motorcycles, horseback riding, or any number of hobbies, you could display fishing gear, golf clubs, saddle and tack…even a motorcycle.

Visitations can bring friends and family together to “tell the story” as a shared experience. It is a special time to receive love, comfort, and support.

County Hall Corner: Money Well Given and Well Spent By Larry Stout

S

ometimes history is made, and no one notices it happened. This was the case at the Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on Thursday, July 21st, when the commissioners voted to award $20,000 each to the 28 fire companies in Lycoming County from Act 13 funds. The commissioners routinely disperse funds to many different organizations outside of county government, so this did not appear to be more than just another agenda item. Yet, according to some sources, this is the first time in at least three decades that any board of county commissioners has allotted funds to each of the fire companies in the county. To credit this present board of commissioners, it has not for lack of trying. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) allocated $6.15 billion to Pennsylvania counties and metropolitan cities, with Lycoming County receiving $22 million. Ideally, these were funds to assist organizations that suffered through the COVID shutdowns and would help them to get back on their feet. Like many other non-profit organizations, volunteer fire companies saw almost all their fund-raising efforts ei-

ther limited or eliminated by their shutdowns. However, these funds precluded fire companies due to the Act’s tax-filing status and procurement regulations. These companies were also not eligible for funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Ironically, other non-profits were eligible, but fire companies were not. However, Act 13 Impact Fees did not have these same restraints. These funds come from the gas industry to help relieve the ‘impact’ of the gas industry’s operations to the environment and community stability in the Commonwealth. Yet, like a Gumby toy, the impact fees over time have become a grab-bag for almost any organization in the county.

COUNTY HALL The commissioners noted that the requests for these funds exceed the $22 million in the Act 13 funds account. Even discounting the organizations that would not qualify, they could go through those funds in a couple of weeks if need be. In seeking to establish some parameters, the commissioners wisely consider two factors very highly. First, they believe that the funds should have a generational impact. This is sort of like the Greek proverb that a great leader is one who plants a tree that he will never be able to sit under. The second consideration was that these funds should be used for leverage. Commissioner Mussare noted that currently, they are seeing a $7 return for every $1 spent. This board of commissioners has continually shown a sincere concern for the viability of the local fire companies and emergency services in general. This action of disbursement is not coming from tax money but from the grant money from the Commonwealth. Twenty thousand dollars might seem like a lot of money, but to be perfectly honest, it does not go far in fire services. When the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company bought a new truck last year, it replaced one that was roughly two decades old. The trucks were fundamentally similar in their purpose, and the new truck came from the same

company as the one it was replacing. But the cost of the truck in 2021 was almost three times what the price was in 1994! And what is known as “turn-out gear,” or what the rest of us would call the firefighter’s ‘suit’ runs into the thousands. Going head to toe — helmet, $350; goggles, $75; breathing apparatus with one spare bottle, $6,500; jacket/pants combo, $1,800; fire gloves, $75, boots, $450. This does not include axes, flashlights, safety harnesses, radio, etc. And all of these items have only a ten-year life cycle and then must be replaced. Given all this, $20,000 is certainly appreciated, but a drop in the bucket when considering that beyond the firefighters themselves, they must continually be up to date on their training, the vehicles must be continually maintained, and firehouses use utilities like electricity and heat just like our own homes. The cost of maintaining a volunteer fire company is staggering. Yes, many groups and organizations have great needs, and the commissioners need the wisdom of Solomon to distribute these funds where they will do the most good. Given all this, the Lycoming County Commissioners deserve a virtual pack on the back for their action in this case because it is a symbol of support for every volunteer firefighter and emergency responder in our county.

UPMC Pediatrician: Help Your Kids Beat the Heat By Mark Odorizzi, D.O. Pediatrics, UPMC

S

Call 570-326-9322

ummer is here in full effect in north central Pennsylvania. The sun is shining, and the warm days are packed full of activities for kids taking advantage of their summer breaks. During the hot summer months when the temperatures climb, it’s important to plan into your day opportunities to help kids cool down and avoid a heat injury. What are Heat Injuries? When summer temperatures reach their height, the risk of heat injury increases, too. Heat is a leading weather-related killer, but heat-related deaths and injuries are preventable. Heat injury is a term used to describe any of multiple common heat illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. These conditions can progress from one to the next along a continuum. It’s very important for parents to be mindful of the heat as kids oftentimes will not recognize the effects of the heat themselves and this can get them into trouble with heat illness. In order of severity, the four types of heat-related illnesses are: Dehydration – Of all the heat-related illnesses, dehydration is the most common. Heat and humidity make both children and adults vulnerable to dehydration. In dehydration, the first sign is thirst; however, there are other signs to watch for including:

– Headache – Irritability – Light-headedness or dizziness – Boredom or disinterest – Excessive fatigue – Inability to play as hard or as well as usual Combat dehydration by encouraging water breaks as well as breaks in activity for rest, preferably in a shaded and cool area. Muscle Cramps – Heat related muscle cramps most often occur when a child is dehydrated and has been active in the heat over a long period. Cramps usually occur in the lower extremities but also can happen in the abdomen. If you suspect a child has a heat cramp, have the child: – Stop playing – Drink a sports drink to replenish fluids, preferably one containing sodium and electrolytes – Perform some light stretching and massage Heat Exhaustion – Heat exhaustion can occur when a child remains active during periods of dehydration. This is most common later in the summer during activity. Signs of heat exhaustion include: – Trouble playing or finding it impossible to keep playing – Light-headedness, fainting, loss of coordination – Heavy sweating – Pale skin – Headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

– Stomach cramps or persistent muscle cramps If these symptoms occur, it is important to act quickly: – Move the child to air-conditioning or at least to a shaded area – Remove excess clothing or equipment – Cool with water or fans – Lie the child down with legs raised above heart level – Rehydrate by giving water or a sports drink if the child is not nauseated or vomiting If the child does not recover quickly, seek medical treatment promptly. Heat Stroke – A serious heat-related illness that can lead to permanent disability or death if untreated, heat stroke occurs when the body’s core temperature rises above 104 degrees, usually because of vigorous activity in the heat. The risk of heat stroke increases as heat and humidity rise. Signs a child may be suffering from heat stroke include: – Seizures, confusion, emotional instability, irrational behavior, or other signs of central nervous system dysfunction – Increase in core body temperature – Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, weakness, fast breathing, increased heart rate, dehydration, or combativeness Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and you should call 911 immediately. Until help arrives, take the child out of the heat and sun, and begin to carefully and gradually cool the child down. Help Your Kids Beat the Heat

When it comes to heat illness, preparation and prevention are key. When planning for a day of play in warm weather: – Check the forecast. Heat illnesses can set in even on cloudy days. Be especially careful when the humidity level is high. The body has a harder time cooling itself by sweating in higher humidity since sweat will not evaporate as quickly. – Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even before you feel thirsty. Feeling thirsty means you’re already dehydrated, so stop dehydration by drinking before, during, and after any activities in the heat. Always send your child out to play with drinking water accessible nearby. – Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that breathes. – Try to exercise or play in shaded areas and take frequent breaks to cool down. It’s also helpful to avoid the peak sun hours of the day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monitor for signs of heat distress and act quickly. Spending time outside is OK if your child is prepared and protected to avoid heat injuries. Heat illness and injury can sneak up on kids but following these simple tips can help your child stay safe and enjoy all the fun that summer has to offer. Mark Odorizzi, D.O., is a physician with UPMC Pediatrics and sees patients at UPMC Primary Care, 175 Pine St., Williamsport. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Odorizzi, call 570-326-2447. children. Our brains are simply not wired to focus on many things at once. We must first clean up our mental workspace by finishing existing projects and resolving unfinished business. Creativity comes from within. Forcing creativity is like telling someone to be funny on command. It doesn’t work that way. To be creative, we must first understand what inspires us. In the case of Hermanson’s client, she desired to start her own business because she was unhappy with her current job, which is an external pressure. Instead, she should have been asking herself if gaining independence would bring her joy. She needed to make the process about doing something she loved, not avoiding something she hated. Think big. Start with the biggest dream possible and work from there. If you begin a project with very narrow goals and expectations, you are greatly limiting your potential outcomes. Instead, allow yourself to dream when looking at any task. This will get the ideas flowing. From there, your plan can be refined to fall within reasonable

parameters. For example, when I talk to my children about composing a paper for school, I tell them not to edit the first draft as they write. Instead, write freely. There is a time later for grammar and punctuation. Get the bones, the framework, down first without restricting yourself, then clean it up. I find the best ideas come to me when I am uninhibited. Whether you are the world’s next creative genius, working on your opus magnum, or are simply trying to organize your kids’ crazy schedule and figure out who is getting them to overlapping practices, creativity is critical for with new ideas. Being creative is not just for artists and poets. It is important for finding new ways to do things and seeing possibilities. Everyone has the need for creativity, and everyone has the potential to be creative. Don’t limit yourself when looking for solutions. Start big and work from there. Give yourself the freedom to come up with many ideas, even if some seem ridiculous. You only need to settle on one good solution to a challenge.

eter A. Kozmin, professor at the Moscow College of Flour Milling, Grain Director and Grain Industries of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, heads a party spending several days in Muncy in the interest in the grain industry of his native land. He is associated with a school of about 1,500 students. He is accompanied by L.M. Landa, director of the Odessa College of Milling Industry which has about 1,200 students. Kozin spoke positively of the concept of collective farming now going on inside Russia. Their advantages have already been demonstrated he asserts. “By the end of the Five-Year Plan we will have to mill for our own use, approximately two billion bushels of wheat and barley alone, and by the end of the next Five-Year Plan in 1937, three billion bushels.” Russia requires about 1,000 flour mills for cities and industrial centers and a

minimum of 30,000 mills for the village population. The old mills are equipped with old and obsolete machinery, and it is in connection with this, that the mission Professor Kozin heads has been sent to America and to Muncy specifically, to study the latest developments in milling methods and machinery. Professor Kozin talks freely and optimistically about the agricultural situation in the Soviet Union. He said the Soviet government’s policy is to introduce modern lines of machinery into all lines of industry with special attention to agriculture which was in such a state that the average peasant under the old regime “did not even have iron nails.” The purpose of their visit to Muncy is to inspect flour mill machinery and flour mill building works of the Robinson Manufacturing Company. Professor Kozin is delighted with the visit here and is highly pleased with the Sprout-Waldron Company and Robinson Manufacturing Company.

cream puff cake for my dad’s birthday this week. It’s usually vanilla, but I asked dad if he would like a different flavor, and he picked chocolate. It was such a nice switch. Now, I never got a picture of the darn thing, but I do have a random picture of my vanilla one in the pan. Sorry, it’s not my finest photo, but you’ll get the picture. It’s so light and delicious on a hot summer evening. Enjoy. Cream Puff Cake Ingredients: • 1 cup water • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup butter • 1 cup flour • 4 eggs • 2 small packages instant vanilla pudding (Or chocolate) • 8 ounces cream cheese very soft • 3 1/2 cups milk • 8 ounces whipped topping defrosted Directions: Boil together water, butter and salt then pour into a mixing bowl. Add flour and beat by hand until it forms a ball or beat for a couple of minutes with a wooden spoon. Cool for 5 to 10 minutes. The next step is adding eggs and the base of the dough needs to cool enough that the eggs don’t start cooking as soon as they hit hot dough. Preheat oven to 450°F and grease a 9×13″ baking pan.

Add eggs and beat until thick and smooth. Pour into greased pan and bake for 25 minutes at 400°F or until brown. Allow pan and dough to cool for 45 minutes to an hour before adding cream filling. You should not feel heat in the bottom of the pan when applying the cream layer. Beat softened cream cheese in a mixing bowl. Whisk together pudding and milk and add to cream cheese. Mix slowly at first and then beat well. Pour over baked cream puff. (Small bumps of cream cheese in pudding are ok, it won’t affect the cake at all.) Cover with Cool Whip. Store in the refrigerator.

OLD LYCOMING TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS Citizens Concerned for Old Lycoming Township has been fact checking the OLT Meeting Presentation by Chief DeRemer dated July 12, 2022 On page two we found a major deceptive statement under “Current Building Projects” – OLT still owes approximately $300K on their building renovation. – Jersey Shore Borough owns current Police Station free and clear. Take note the first bullet point does not reference the police department but tries to deceptively claim part or all of the $300K is OLTPD debt. The WHOLE TRUTH: When the OLT Municipal Offices and Police Dept. were renovated, there were two processes. The Municipal Offices portion had private contractors perform that project. OLTPD had several police officers skilled in the construction trade VOLUNTEER their hours and expertise. This included dry wall, electrical, design, etc. A professional floor installer volunteered his services to lay all the flooring. There is a plaque in the police lobby thanking many community businesses and people for their contributions to the renovation of the police department. The VOLUNTEER hours contributed by the officers alone amounted to a $150,000.00 SAVINGS to OLT. The only cash out lay to OLT was for some materials, less than $20,000.00. The construction of the central processing center in the police building was completed with the same OLT Officers providing labor and the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office paid for a everything else. No cost to OLT. The cash outlay for the police department renovations was less than $20,000.00. With this historic look at the renovations why was the 300K figure even in this presentation by Chief DeRemer? For purposes of accurately and truthfully presenting the $300K, the presentation should have clearly stated that the total due represents the municipal offices balance, NOT the police. Who provided this deceptive information to Chief DeRemer? This statement validates Concerned Citizens insistence that the DCED conduct a free supplemental study. The professional, unbiased, experts should prepare a true and accurate presentation for YOU to review.

OUTFITS summer vibe. Tighter hairdos tend to pull and tear hair, causing split ends and breakage, especially if your hair is already dry from the sun and heat. If you find yourself at the pool, you can reduce the harm of chlorine (and saltwater if at the beach) by saturating your strands in clean water before diving in. Pre-wetted hair won’t absorb as much salt or pool chemicals as dry hair. If there’s no shower handy, keep a spray bottle of fresh water to spritz your locks or use a leave-in conditioner to pre-treat your hair

before taking the plunge. It’s also a good idea to rinse your hair after a swim. Again, if there’s no shower, use that spray bottle. For lighter-colored hair, try rinsing out post-swim hair with 1⁄4 cup apple cider vinegar and 2 cups water to get rid of discoloration and dullness. A low-key method to keep hair healthy this season is simply washing it less often. Frequent washing can strip your scalp of its natural oils, which in turn stimulates additional oil production and makes you feel

treatment to your weekly haircare, or on days when you’ve been in the sun for long periods. Target features Native’s Vegan Hair Deep Conditioner mask, or create your own with shea butter, coconut oil, or honey; just be sure to rinse thoroughly. These are just a few ways of keeping hair healthy during the summer. Of course, with the sun beaming down, the pool calling your name, and the air thick with humidity, a bit of frizzy and fried hair is bound to happen. Don’t let preventative methods and treatments keep you from enjoying what’s left of summer. You can always do some damage control come fall.

The OLTPD has Assets Valued Over $330,000 Based on Chief DeRemer's July 12, 2022 Presentation

Would you sign a contract giving away all your assets?? Of course not, that would be foolish. Common sense says NO! Yet this is what may happen under the regionalization proposal. Page 4 of Chief DeRemer’s presentation: “A new Regional Commission will create a clause that if any municipality withdraws from the (Regional) Department before a specific time they forfeit all assets. (Over $330,000.00). Note, from the information Concerned Citizens can find, OLT will have 33% of the vote on this commission, yet we are assessed 50% of the budget. (Chief DeRemer’s calculation). …after 5 years a municipality could withdraw with no loss of assets.” What is the value on any asset after 5 years? Depreciation on vehicles patrolling 216 sq. miles alone would make a vehicle worthless for police work. 81% of the coverage area surrounds or is due north of Jersey Shore. 19% is OLT, Lycoming, and Hepburn Townships. What if in the first year patrol vehicle are consistently sent from OLT 13 miles west to answer calls in Jersey Shore while those units are north on calls. What happens to OLT coverage? It is gone. If we opt out of the regionalized department we have NOTHING. What if this flat out fails in the first year. OLT has no police, no assets, maybe a building with nothing inside. Do we start new and if so at what cost? One million, two million dollars? July 23, 2022 Chief DeRemer is quoted by Jeremy Stout, “he (DeRemer) expects the size of the department to double (350 sq. miles) next year, and they (TVRPD) currently cover 175 (sq.) miles.” “He says this makes them the department with the largest coverage area in PA.” In addition to potentially loosing $330,000.00 in assets we would be part of a Grand Experiment, that is part of the largest land coverage area in Pa. without anyone who has expertise in organizing, providing logistics, and leading such an experiment. Where should such a process start? Certainly not by diving in without some caution. Concerned Citizens call for a supplemental DCED Study. Why are our supervisors resistant to this common sense request? Why the rush? This is a project whose costs exceed 2.5 million dollars, could cost OLT a police department and $330,000.00 in lost assets. SLOW DOWN! Apply your own personal life experiences to the facts. Do you have a reasonable doubt about OLT joining this 216 sq. mile (or possibly 350 sq. mile) Grand Experiment? Are you ready to gamble over $330,000.00 in assets?

the need to wash it even more, which in turn dries out and leads to frizzier hair. To break this vicious cycle, skip the full wash for an every-otherday rinse. If your follicles are feeling sweaty, try a dry shampoo like Dove’s Care Between Washes dry shampoo, or use a homemade alternative such as cornstarch. Another quick fix is to dab a cotton ball soaked in witch hazel along your scalp to dissolve excess oil. On days you do wash your hair, switch to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, such as Pantene’s Hydrating Glow shampoo and conditioner combos. You may also want to add a deep-conditioning

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer “The Hawk’s Way: Encounters with Fierce Beauty” by Sy Montgomery c.2022, Atria Books $20.00 79 pages

I

t’s no fun saying “King me!” by yourself. Yep, checkers needs two to play, as does chess, backgammon, and

Old Maid. Lots of things, in fact, are better when you’re got another pair of hands and another point of view to join you. In the new book “The Hawk’s Way” by Sy Montgomery, though, partnering with a wild creature is a whole ‘nother game. The first time that Sy Montgomery met Mahood, he almost instantly swiveled his head toward her face and screamed. Although her husband was alarmed, the scream took her by surprise but she wasn’t nonplussed.

Montgomery’s become used to all kinds of critters – pigs, chickens, cats and dogs, and “even an octopus” – but Mahood was a very large Harris’s hawk, and they don’t always take easily to strangers. She knew what could have happened: a hawk will attack someone who angers it, makes a minor mistake, tries to touch it, or otherwise acts counter to what the hawk decides. A falconer might “train” a hawk, but the bird’s in charge. When you hunt with a hawk, you are it’s “partner,” not its master, Montgomery says – and yes, she was

eager to get started. Still, even with expert help and what seemed like a natural way with raptors, she had a lot to learn, including words she couldn’t say to a hawk, body language, and personal protection advice. There is, as Montgomery discovered, a “language of falconry” that goes beyond mere eating and eliminating to mantling and slicing. Falcons don’t sleep, they jonk. They don’t clean themselves, they feak. And they are not pets, in any sense of the word; new falconers catch their birds in the wild

Indeed, readers who are eagleeyed will notice what author Sy Montgomery makes abundantly clear: that though the hawk is a lovely, elegant bird, it’s a creature not to be trifled with. Yea or nay, carry on: the secondary focus of this book are the awe-struck observations of the hawks Montgomery admires, and the

Cutters Carvings A Weekly Look At The Williamsport Crosscutters Compiled by the Crosscutters Media Relations Dept.

Cutters Raise Funds for Aly’s Monkey Movement The Williamsport Crosscutters recently held a jersey auction to benefit Aly’s Monkey Movement. The charity, whose mission is to “Change the world, one monkey at a time”, was started in 2019 by then 10-year-old Aly Creasy. The charity provides stuffed animal monkeys to children locally and all over the world who may be experiencing a difficult time in their lives. To date, the charity has donated over 6,500 stuffed monkeys to children. The Crosscutters July 8 game was designated as Aly’s Monkey Movement Night and sponsored by UPMC. It featured Cutters players and coaches in specially designed jerseys that were available to fans via an online auction that raised $4,761.75 for the charity. A check was presented to Aly’s Monkey Movement prior to the July 15 Crosscutters game. Preparations Begin for MLB Little League Classic The 2021 MLB Little League Classic will take place on August 21 at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. This year’s event will feature the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox. Preparations outside the ballpark are ongoing for the event. As in past years, this will mean some minor inconveniences, mainly involving parking for fans attending Cutters games through August 14. The Williamsport Crosscutters appreciate fans patience and understanding during this period. Designate Cutters as an Official Community

Ally

Major League Baseball announced the “Community Ally Program,” which allows MLB Clubs to give an MLB Draft League team the designation of “Official Community Ally” of that MLB Club. Through this program, MLB Clubs and MLB Draft League teams may collaborate on community-based initiatives, including cross promotion on MLB Club and Draft League team platforms, ballpark and youth participation events, and charitable or fundraising efforts. As an Official Community Ally, the MLB Draft League team will receive the right to use the MLB Club’s logo as part of an MLB-created Official Community Ally logo to highlight the partnership on the team’s website and in the team’s ballpark, and recognition on the MLB Club’s website and social media channels as an Official Community Ally. All six MLB Draft League teams have established relationships with MLB Clubs: Mahoning Valley Scrappers/Cleveland Guardians; Frederick Keys/Baltimore Orioles; Trenton Thunder/Philadelphia Phillies; Williamsport Crosscutters/Philadelphia; State College Spikes/ Pittsburgh Pirates; and West Virginia Black Bears/ Pittsburgh. The details of each relationship are subject to approval of the individual MLB Clubs and MLB Draft League team, and more details on each will be forthcoming. This season, the Crosscutters commemorate the 35th anniversary of Dave Bresnahan’s Great Potato Caper. Bresnahan created baseball history using a POTATO in a trick play for the Williamsport Bills in 1987, leading to worldwide publicity that continues to this day. To celebrate, the Williamsport Crosscutters will be rebranding to the Great Potato Capers for the August 31 game. The first 1,000 fans attending the game will receive a limited-edition “Potato Ball”. Special Great Potato Caper jerseys, all featuring Bresnahan’s name, will be available to fans in an online auction. ell, are you ready for the upcoming hunting seasons? They will be here before you know it. By now, you probably have your hunting license and perhaps have even looked over your hunting equipment to see just what you need to upgrade or replace for this fall. For some of you, vacations have been scheduled, and perhaps trip plans have been made for a hunt in one of the western states this year. But, even if you plan just to hunt locally, are you really ready? If you take a bear or perhaps a deer or two to feed the family, are you prepped to store the meat for several months? I wonder if you are like most folks with a relatively full freezer with no open room for whatever game you may take this fall. Well, now is the perfect time to make some space and get ready for some fresh harvesting. Here are a few tips if you need to make some room. Do some canning: Venison is an excellent meat for canning. Once canned for storage, the meat is very tender, and there is absolutely no loss of flavor. Most folks who try canned venison for the first time are pleasantly surprised

as to the flavor and tenderness of the meat. It can be used in soups, stews, over toast with gravy, or served over rice or with mashed potatoes. Canned venison can be used to make a sandwich, enhanced with a bit of lettuce, onion, or tomato- or whatever your imagination can conjure up. Kept in the refrigerator after opening, a jar of canned venison makes a nice snack right out of the jar. Canning venison is not difficult, but there is a bit of a learning curve, with numerous books available about canning and an unlimited amount of advice online — particularly the dozens of videos on YouTube that even a novice can easily learn from. Leftover venison roasts are the perfect cut for canning, but steaks can also be used by cubing the cuts into ¾ to 1-inch squares. Venison burger can also be canned and then used at a later date for soups, stews, meatloaves, or lasagna. I bet that if you try canning venison, you will become a convert and end up canning some every year! Make jerky: There’s truly something special when you are sitting on a deer stand, hiking through the forest, or sitting along a stream, and, as the hunger pangs begin, you reach into your backpack and pull out some of the venison jerky that you made. Simply slice a venison roast or steak about 1/8 inch thick (thicker if you prefer), marinate the slices in the cure and flavor mix as per the directions supplied, then dehydrate the meat in your oven or one of the many dehydrators available today. A chance meeting with College of Charleston and former Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Cremins led to a four-year stint under Cremins’ tutelage as a student assistant. This provided Roskowski with the opportunity to broaden his basketball horizons by performing duties that included scouting reports, play calls, video coordinating, and serving on the scout teams during Cremins’ practices. Four years later, he was offered a position at Charleston Southern University, a member of the Big South Conference,

two-time first-team all-state standout, may choose to play during his upcoming senior year. Hill is receiving interest from colleges such as Missouri State, Towson, Kent State, and Maryland, among others. “From what I have heard, this has been the talk every year since he’s been here. I’m planning and hopeful he is coming back, but if Davion, for some reason, chooses to take his talents somewhere else, then we will move on accordingly. “We’ve lost several good players from last year’s team, and whether you look at it as rebuilding or not, the guys have to know that when their back is against the wall, the only way to get away from that wall is by working your way out. We need to be in the gym, and we need to be working. Rebuilding is what it is; every team goes through it at some time or another. Regardless, you are only as good as your players. I want them to buy into the fact that you only get better if you choose to work towards it. “I expect my players to give everything they have. Come every day focused. Be ready to work. A player is only as good as how hard he plays. They need to be willing to work on the skills they are uncomfortable with. I will hold players accountable, especially in the classroom. If they can’t keep their grades up, they can’t play.” Coming home again, Louis Roskowski looks forward to writing his own new chapters of the St. John Neumann basketball legacy.

says, ‘inside out, no doubt.’ I like to look to get the ball inside and then back out to the perimeter. I think there is a higher percentage of making that shot when the pass comes from the inside. I like to get out and run. We can run plays, or we can make plays, and I prefer the latter. I want the players to understand the game and think for themselves. I prepare them; they play.” Based primarily on SJN’s years of dominance as a single A school, a recent PIAA ruling has elevated the Golden Knights to play at the AA level beginning this season. “I’m looking at it as a challenge we have to be ready for,” Roskowski reasoned. “It would be awesome to say we could win a district title in AA because the school has always been Single A and never had that opportunity. I don’t understand all the PIAA rules, but I think we will be fine. It may give our guys a little bit of fire to prove we can play at AA.” As for his expectations, “Honestly, I’m the type of person that doesn’t care too much what people may say or think about me. I just do me and let everything else fall in line. I feel confident. I have been doing this now for 16 seasons. I’ve dealt with parents and other people before, so it is one of those things that you deal with as you go.” Like others in the basketball community, Roskowski has heard the speculation as to where Davion Hill, the 2021/2022 Class A Pennsylvania State Player of the Year and
