Well, the winter that wasn’t has shown up like a lion for the month of March. Let’s hope the saying holds true and it goes out like a lamb. What a great time of year, late winter snowfall and all. Soon we will be enjoying all the sweet sounds, sights, and activities of Spring. Daylight savings time and that extra hour of sunlight in the evening are already appreciated.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to everyone, whether you’re truly Irish or Irish for the day. One of the true harbingers of Spring is when I get the call to put the Shamrock’s ad together that appears below. I always enjoyed sitting down with Mr. Bobby Griffin and catching up on things. I knew this year would be a little different as Bobby left us in January. I was glad to hear from owner Peggy Leta and that she would carry on this tradition within our pages. I’m sure Bobby is looking down, smiling.

I have always enjoyed Saint Patrick’s Day, but this year I have a little added incentive. A while back, I had my DNA checked and found out I’m a little over 10% Irish. I never knew there was any Irish blood in my veins. I knew there was

lots of Italian and German, with some English, but this came as a surprise. Our Irish tradition at the Webb house has always been my mother-in-law Theresa’s corned beef and cabbage. Maybe this year, I’ll have an extra bowl and wash it down with a Guinness.

I encourage everyone to get out and about and partake in the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day. We have great local restaurants, bars, and eateries that will be featuring the taste and drinks of the Irish. Many beverages featured will even be nonalcoholic. Please, if you’re going to drink, do not drive; that way, everyone makes it home safely.

Another true sign of Spring is that our Webb Weekly Home Improvement guide can be found within our paper. It is one of our biggest publications of the year featuring 40 pages of the who, what, how and why to get your project done. And maybe even some ideas you haven’t even thought about. It is also a great guide to keep around for justin-case purposes. If you do throw it away, it can always be found archived at webbweekly.com.

A special tip of my Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on the side to

all the businesses that advertise in our annual Spring and Fall Home Improvement Guides. Many have been present since we began the publication. We sincerely appreciate your trust in our paper and the hard work, products, and services you provide.

Saint Patrick’s Day time and the middle of the month also mark a time every basketball fan looks forward to, March Madness — the luck of the Irish to everyone in filling out their brackets. I can’t wait to see who takes top honors in our annual Webb Weekly office contest.

If you’re doing a little more betting than maybe an office poll, please wager wisely. With all the easy access to sports betting, it’s becoming a real problem for many. Especially those that already struggle with a gambling problem. In closing things out, this week, a quick story about what a difference a year makes. The South Williamsport Lady Mounties recently won the District IV Girls 2A title; as I’m penning this article, they’re getting ready to tip off the PIAA State Tournament with an openinground home game.

Last year at this time, now first-year Head Coach Dean Kriebel, was just finishing up chemo treatments as he

was battling cancer. There was obviously much uncertainty in his life, although his love for the game of basketball never wavered. It actually provided a needed distraction and something he looked forward to during some very difficult days.

With the support of his wife Amy, his family, friends, and his community, he finished chemo, regained his strength, and was encouraged to become the head coach on the South Side.

With Amy as an assistant by his side, daughter Lacey hitting threes, and the inspiration and support of son Andrew, what a journey in faith the family’s story has been. With many more chapters to be written by this amazing family.

What does the next chapter hold in your life? Please appreciate and give thanks for everything you have each and every day, even when things may not be going your way.

God Bless America.

From the Editor…

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

“Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig ort!” — in other words, “May the blessing of St. Patrick’s Day be on you.”

Iam not Irish. Not even a little bit. According to 23andMe, I am Italian and German. Leaning heavily towards the Italian. But there’s nothing wrong with finding the Irish spirit and having some St. Patrick’s Day fun! But before you find all your green clothes and don your shamrocks, let’s learn a little about the history of St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the

afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink, and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth centu- ry, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle.

Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.

In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture: Per-

haps the most well-known legend of St. Patrick is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.

According to history.com, legend has it that Patrick stood on an Irish hillside and delivered a sermon that drove the island’s serpents into the sea. While it’s true that the Emerald Isle is mercifully snake-free, chances are that’s been the case throughout human history. Water has surrounded Ireland since the end of the last glacial period, preventing snakes from slithering over; before that, it was blanketed in ice and too chilly for the cold-blooded creatures. Scholars believe the snake story is an allegory for St. Patrick’s eradication of pagan ideology.

Since around the ninth or 10th century, people in Ireland have been observing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick on March 17. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade actually took place in America. A St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601,

in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. The parade, and a St. Patrick’s Day celebration a year earlier were organized by the Spanish Colony’s Irish vicar Ricardo Artur.

More than a century later, homesick Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched in New York City on March 17, 1772, to honor the Irish patron saint. Enthusiasm for the St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York City, Boston and other early American cities only grew from there.

In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a spiritual and religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use interest in St. Patrick’s Day to drive tourism and showcase Ireland and Irish culture to the rest of the world.

Today, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide. However, those of us in North America seem to make our

celebrations more extra than the rest of the world.

So, now that you know the history, go forth and celebrate — safely of course. Raise a green beer, shout “Sláinte,” try and find some gold at the end of a rainbow. But be aware, leprechauns aren’t always friendly.

The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies — tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Leprechauns were known for their trickery, which they often used to protect their much-fabled treasure.

Finally, one last Irish note: It’s Paddy, not Patty. Ever. Saint Patrick’s Day? Grand. Paddy’s Day? Sure, dead-on. St. Pat’s? If ye must. St. Patty? No, ye goat!

County Gets Petition for Controller

Apetition for a referendum seeking the establishment of the office of controller for Lycoming County was filed with the Bureau of Elections at the Court House Friday afternoon.

The petition, which contained the signatures of 112 electors of the county, was referred to Marshall C. Anspach, county solicitor for approval.

If the petition is in order, the question of whether or not the county will change from a board of three auditors to a controller will be placed on the May 20 ballot.

Should the electors approve of the controller system of checking the county’s finances, the voters would be given the opportunity to name such an official at the election in 1947. A controller would be elected for four years.

The taxation committee of the Com-

munity Trade Association, which is called in annually to make a survey of the county’s budget before it is adopted has for several years advocated for the election of a controller.

In addition to petitioning the county commissioners to place the question on the ballot there is another way in which the controllership can be established. A petition can be presented to the court, which must be signed by five percent of the county’s electors who voted at the general or municipal election next preceding the date of such petition. This petition, however, must include the signatures of the elected officers of the county.

“The court, after consideration of the petition and hearing, if any is requested by the taxpayers shall, if it deems same for the best interests of the county, direct the electors to choose the citizen for the next municipal election,” according to the law.

How St. Patrick’s Day is Celebrated in Ireland

Initially a religious holiday to commemorate the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has since evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture. In fact, it has become one of the most popular days of the year to throw a party and gather with others.

So how do people in Ireland — the heart of where St. Patrick’s Day originated — celebrate each March 17th? Should travelers find themselves in Ireland this time of year, here’s what to expect in terms of St. Patrick’s Day commemorations.

Since St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday, expect schools, banks and some businesses to be closed around the country and in portions of Northern Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day tourism is big business, so restaurants and pubs likely will be open and may extend their hours. According to the vacationing resource Travel Awaits, more than 100,000 travelers visit Dublin from March 14 to March 18 to partake in St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2023 falls on a Friday this year, but one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions. Abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Fri-

day anyway.

The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well.

Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks.

It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.

Rainy Day Style

Even for those of us that are meticulous forecast checkers, sometimes you wake up, and it’s unexpectedly raining, throwing all of the potential outfit ideas you had the night before out the window, and are now being drenched. While wet weather can be a downer, it doesn’t mean your look has to follow suit. Here are a few outfit ideas, tips, and tricks to conquer rainy day style.

boots are a bit oversized and can fit clunkily. A thicker sock will help support your foot and provide extra warmth. If you’re taking along shoes to change into from your boots, be sure to also tuck away the appropriate sock for that shoe style. My knee-high padded wool Bombas socks are great with rainboots, but rolling into a meeting with them in loafers is not a great look.

First, layer everyday basics. This time of year, rainy days can be cold, but as the months progress, they’ll start to get humid. So, having layers will come in handy, especially if a downpour breaches your outerwear and your mid-layer gets damp. Wearing a t-shirt under a button-up and then a sweater over that will give you options and hopefully keep you cozy.

Rainboots are a no-brainer on stormy mornings; however, quality socks are also key. Often pull-on rain

Speaking of meetings, for rainy days in the office, I like to keep it simple, functional, and chic. A blouse, cropped trousers, waterproof Chelsea-style boots (which can be worn all day), and a hooded raincoat. The style of pants is key — they don’t call them “high-waters” for nothing. A flared or longer-hemmed pant runs the risk of dragging and getting wet. A trouser legging would also work, just as long as they can be tucked into the boot.

As interest rates on credit cards and other consumer loans increase, consolidating your debt can help you save money.

The following example shows just how much you can benefit from consolidating with a lower interest rate at First Harvest. Assume you are currently making the minimum payments on the following loans:

OUTFITS

For rainy off-duty days, you can always opt for jeans, again being mindful of the hem, with a longsleeved striped tee, fleece vest, waterproof windbreaker, and hiking boots. Rainboots aren’t the only water-resistant footwear. There are all sorts of waterproof shoe options. I tend to explore the “weekend warrior” department for these types of shoes, but brands like UGG, Sam Edelman, and Hunter Boots will have less performance-based shoes that foot the bill and keep it dry!

For rainy nights on the town, you can still wear a cocktail, mini, or wrap dress. You can even wear an oversized t-shirt dress belted; just be sure to pull on some tights to keep your extremities protected. Sparkly opaque tights bring a celebratory touch to a dress look. I also like the idea of layering both tights and a turtleneck under a party dress for downpours on date night. You may, however, want to forgo heels and opt for more functional footwear and a raincoat.

As for raincoats, there are many stylish options out there. You don’t have to look like a sailor or a school kid unless you want to. A nauticalthemed outfit is perfectly acceptable on a rainy day, while a take on a school uniform is basically business casual, no matter the weather. Those options aside, there are many ways to interpret a raincoat that aligns with your personal style. From classic trench coats to parkas to color block ponchos. And not all coats need hoods.

Bucket hats, baseball caps, and head scarves can all be deployed on a grey day, especially if you’re also carrying an umbrella. I also love the idea of a transparent raincoat; that way, you can still show off your outfit and stay dry.

Regardless of what the forecast predicts, rainy days can come sporadically and unexpectedly. But with the proper gear of shoes, socks, jackets, and head coverage, once you are safe inside and have shed your rainwear, you’ll be dry and stylish.

And then you consolidate your debts with a First Harvest Home Equity Loan:

In this scenario, your monthly payment would be lower, your loan would be paid off in 5 years, and you would SAVE OVER $16,000 IN INTEREST!

We can help you determine whether consolidation is right for you and suggest the best financial products to help you meet your goals.

Call us at (800) 582-7640 or visit one of our branches. We’ll show you why First Harvest is A Better Place to Grow.

2nd Annual Christian Houghtaling Foundation Golf Tournament

In 2017 Christian Houghtaling was diagnosed with a rare subtype of Leukemia called Hypodiploid Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). At the time of his diagnosis, Christian was a bright, talented, 14-year-old Loyalsock Township High School Freshman. Although he was treated at some of the top medical facilities in the country, including Geisinger, Johns Hopkins, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Christian passed away on May 16th, 2019, at the age of 17 after bravely battling his illness for over two years.

“Christian was so quick-witted and had an amazing sense of humor. He was very intelligent as well. From the time he was two years old, he’d be putting together these huge puzzles. He loved spending time with family and friends. He loved learning and was very talented artistically,” said his mother, Nicole Bower.

Throughout Christian’s illness, he continued to fundraise for childhood cancer research through St. Jude’s

Children’s Research Hospital, which is the leading researcher for childhood Hypodiploid Leukemia. “Because St. Jude’s is the main researcher for Christian’s illness, we consulted with them for his treatment. During that time, we all recognized how rapid changes in treatment and research were coming about. There were new research trials all the time,” said Nicole. “Christian knew that St. Jude’s was where any money raised would make the greatest impact. That his life may have been saved if research was further along. He knew that this research would make a difference and might save the lives of other kids with the same illness. So, Christian’s desire to help raise funds started as a Facebook campaign where he would ask people to give to St. Jude’s on his birthday.”

“After Christian’s passing, we started The Christian Houghtaling Foundation to not only provide a Loyalsock High School Senior with a college scholarship but to continue to provide research

money for high-risk childhood Leukemia,” said Nicole. “Every dollar we receive goes directly to Dr. Mullighan’s lab at St. Jude’s, who is one of the only doctors in the world researching Christian’s rare leukemia.”

According to its website, the Mullighan Lab studies constellations of inherited and acquired genetic changes that drive acute lymphoblastic Leukemia and related disorders. The Mulligan Lab at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital works to identify these changes and define their molecular mechanisms. They then used genomic technologies and large patient groups, along with experimental and preclinical modeling. Their ultimate goal is to translate their discoveries into advances in cancer diagnosis and therapy to improve the cure rates for Hypodiploid Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and related cancers. The Mulligan Laboratory makes all of its reagents, models, and data available to the research community.

“Since Christian’s diagnosis in 2017, many discoveries and treatments have been made and modified thanks to this vital research,” said Nicole. “Last year, after our first annual Christian Houghtaling Foundation Golf Tournament, I was able to write a $13,000 check to Dr. Mullighan’s lab. We hope to surpass that amount

this year. No other area nonprofits work directly with a doctor doing this research where 100% of the money raised goes to make sure children like Christian go on to live healthy lives and see their dreams become reality!” The Christian Houghtaling Foundation Golf Tournament will be held at noon on June 2nd at Hemlock Creek in Bloomsburg. The foundation is seeking both sponsors and players. The price is $400 per foursome, and sponsorship prices vary. Checks should be made payable to the Christian Houghtaling Foundation and mailed to Nicole Bower, 2041 Sheridan St., Williamsport, Pa 17701. Get Your Beef On

Last week I grabbed two pounds of ground beef out of our freezer and went to work. I had planned on burgers, but found out that’s what we were having Thursday with the family for dinner so I had to change my menu. That’s the beauty about ground beef. There is so much you can make with it that takes minimal effort and honestly, not many ingredients. I thought about it all day, pondering what to make with those two pounds of ground beef. I had just made meatloaf the week before. I had been craving it and made a big old loaf. I love meatloaf sandwiches for leftovers.

Meatloaf

• 2 lbs. ground beef

• 1 egg

• 1 cup Ritz crackers crushed fine

• 1 cup of ketchup (add more if not moist enough)

• 1/3 cup finely chopped onion

• 1 tsp salt & pepper

• 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Mix together. Slap that puppy into a loaf. Squirt ketchup over the top. Place in an oil sprayed dish covered with foil and bake at 350 for an hour and a half.

I then thought about tacos. Tacos are never a bad option! It was Tuesday, so Taco Tuesday would have been a perfect option. I had had them a few weeks prior, but was holding onto the idea of having them again.

Tacos

• 1 + lbs .of ground beef

• Taco seasoning

• Your favorite shells, cheese & veggies to stuff it with!

Cook meat over stove top in a pan. Add seasoning to your liking and let that baby simmer as long as you can to get amazing flavor.

We hadn’t had meatballs in forever. Oh man, that sounded good! Typically, when I make meatballs, I make four to five pounds so I can freeze a bunch of them for separate meals like spaghetti and meatballs, meatball hoagies, or stuffed shells with meatballs. Two pounds wouldn’t have taken long to whip up.

Meatballs

• 1 lb ground beef

• 1 garlic clove

• 1/2 cup parmesan cheese

• 2 eggs

• 1 tsp Italian seasoning

• 1 tsp salt & pepper

• 3/4 cup breadcrumbs

Mix all ingredients together and roll balls out with your hands. Lightly fry the outside of meatballs in a few tablespoons of oil in a large pan over medium heat. You just want the outside to brown, it takes only 2-3 minutes. Place those balls in a cooking dish smothered in a delicious tomato sauce. Bake covered at 350 for an hour to an hour and a half, stirring occasionally.

Still undecided, I drove to Weis after work. I either needed a pack of rolls for my one idea, or a boxed meal to help dinner come together. I hadn’t decided. I was walking into the store and my phone rang. “Mom, when are you coming home?” It was Ty. I told him I was just walking into the store and would be right home. “Hey Ty, I’ll let you pick dinner out tonight. It’s between two things. The first thing is the Velveeta Skillet dinner I make sometimes…

Velveeta Skillet Dinner

Drive to the store and get yourself a box of “The Ultimate Cheeseburger Mac”. I use 2 lbs. of meat for one box. Follow directions on the box, and serve with a salad.

Yea, yea, it’s a boxed dinner, and honestly the only box dinner I buy, but I

promise you it’s so good! How can you go wrong with beef, pasta and Velveeta cheese!?

Such an easy meal the whole family will love.

“The second option is my hamburg BBQ, Ty. Which one would you like?”

“That’s easy mom. You know I want your BBQ! It’s my favorite!”

Hamburg BBQ

• 1 lb. ground beef

• 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup good quality ketchup

• 1/4 cup finely chopped onion

• 1 Tbs. mustard

• 1 Tbs. sugar

• Salt & Pepper to taste

Brown hamburger with onion. Drain, then add the rest of the ingredients. Cook for at least another 30 minutes on a simmer until it gets nice and thick.

Ty picked the perfect dinner. It hit the spot. I hadn’t made BBQ in a while. I bought some 647 rolls and made us all a salad. Grapes and Sunchips also were a part of our meal that night.

Ground beef gives us so many options for an easy delicious meal for our families on busy nights. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated! Here are five recipes to help you with your week. Get your beef on!

St. Patrick’s Day is made special by various traditions. Everything from dyeing major cities’ rivers green to parades to enjoying green foods has become part of the pageantry of St. Patrick’s Day.

The next time you raise a green beer to your lips, you may wonder which traditions are authentically Irish and which ones were created by regions with an abundance of Irish emigrants. Surprisingly, many seemingly Irish traditions likely began elsewhere.

First parade: It would be accurate to assume that various elements associated with St. Patrick’s Day began where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once resided, including the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, some of the first parades held in St. Patrick’s honor took place in two North American cities, New York and Boston, that had high numbers of Irish immigrants. But historians say the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601, a year after gunfire blasts were used to honor the saint. The parade may have been at the request of an Irish priest living there at the time.

Corned beef and cabbage: What would St. Patrick’s Day be without an authentic meal of corned beef and cabbage? This dish is not so authentic after all, and actually is an American innovation. Ham and cabbage was widely eaten in Ireland, but corned

beef was a cheaper alternative found in America by immigrants. Therefore, corned beef became a staple of poor Irish immigrants living in lower Manhattan. The salted meat was boiled three times to remove some of the brine and make it palatable.

Green beer: Green beer is not an Irish custom, but an American one. The most common beer consumed in Ireland is Guinness, which is dark brown to black in color, making green dye useless in Irish pubs since it would be largely invisible in the stout.

Wearing green: According to The Christian Science Monitor, individuals in the United States started wearing green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the early 1700s. They believed it “made one invisible to leprechauns.” The official color for the holiday used to be a sky blue known as “St. Patrick’s Day Blue,” established during the reign of King George III.

In addition to these traditions, specialty items, such as coffees and shakes, also are very popular. However, most of these do not have origins on the Emerald Isle, either. Yet, no matter where traditions began, there’s no denying St. Patrick’s Day has long inspired celebration.

“The Book of Animal Secrets: Nature’s Lessons for a Long and Happy Life” by David B. Agus, MD c.2023, Simon & Schuster

$29.99

371 pages

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

That’s what they say: you can’t teach an old dog new tricks because he’s... well, too old. He’s got a lotta years on him, not a lot of brain power in him, or he just plain doesn’t care anymore about learning. So maybe you can, and maybe you can’t teach an old dog anything but in “The Book of Animal Secrets” by David B. Agus, MD, that dog may have lessons for you.

Puppers is a good boy. He gets you outside several times a day and exercise like that is a big part of being healthy. It wasn’t always the case, but you learned and evolved. And so have the creatures that live on the planet alongside us. Like our ancestors, animals’ forebears spent eons “figuring out how to handle threatening stressors, procreate, and thrive.” Says Agus, we have a lot to learn from them when it comes to living the life we’re meant to have. We just have to “learn where to look to find the clues” they leave us.

Take, for instance, a fish.

We shouldn’t drink like one, says Agus, but we should learn to “glide through the world upright with a strong core...” and a good deal of flexibility.

We can take a note from pigeons and learn to watch patterns in our surroundings. This keeps the brain sharp, helps with mental dexterity, and increases memory. “Challenge yourself,” says Agus, but never let your “humanness be a hindrance.”

When traveling, be like a giraffe and mimic

his “built-in technology” with compression socks to avoid circulatory problems. Act like an elephant and let yourself forget, which is a surprising way of remembering. Be like a chimp and learn from others, but also learn where moderation lies inside yourself. Like an ant, know what risks are associated with your job. Exercise like a rhino, maintain the cognitive abilities of an octopus, and as for Puppers, learn the benefits of play, curiosity, general goofiness, and sleep.

You’ll both be glad you did.

Let’s start here: the title of this book could be misunderstood. If you’re looking for a trivia book full of light reading, “The Book of Animal Secrets” isn’t it. Want something fluffy, it’s not here. Put the review down and back away slowly because author David

B. Agus has more important, more lifechanging info to share.

And yet, taking care of yourself, as Agus suggests, isn’t all black-cloth-andsoberness. Play features big in this book, as does relaxation and many of life’s biggest pleasures, proving that health needn’t be a downer or a chore and that you may already be tapped into a few natural and beneficial habits. More proof: come find this book with an expectation of animal tales to enjoy, and you’ll be happy there, too; indeed, animal lovers, especially, will go wild over it.

So grab this book and find your inner ibex. Exalt the elephant inside you and free your fitness ferocity. For that, “The Book of Animal Secrets” does the trick.

Local Ancient Order of Hibernians Division Promotes Irish Heritage All Year Long

Beannachti na Naomh Phadraig duit. In the Irish language, this means “Blessings of Saint Patrick to you.”

St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is considered a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic faith. Traditionally, people started

their day with mass and then went home to a large dinner and celebrations with family and friends.

Unlike America, there were no parades, large beer-drinking festivals, bar hopping, and the like. Nowadays, with TV and the internet, Ireland is becoming more like America, with parades and all. All Irish, both here and abroad, celebrate the day.

One organization, the John P. Maloney Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, is a large part of the celebrations here in town.

According to Christopher Norris, President of the local Division of the Hibernians, the group has marched every year in Williamsport’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and had large social events with great Irish music for their members.

The local Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians is named for John P. Maloney, a Williamsport policeman who was slain in the line of duty in 1907.

this country was to protect Irish immigrants from animosity shown to recent newcomers.

According to Norris, members of the AOH must be of Irish birth or descent, at least 16 years of age, and of good moral character. Local units are known as ‘Divisions’, and are located throughout the entire country. In Pennsylvania, there are 67 Divisions numbering over 10,000 members.

The local Division here in Williamsport was founded in 1889 and currently has 50 members. Norris was formerly the AOH Pennsylvania State President and the current Pennsylvania State Irish language Chairman.

“The Irish immigrants and their descendants have worked here in the lumber industry, railroads, and various other industries here in the city and local area. They have been a large part of the ethnic fabric of this city and continue to contribute to its growth and well-being today,” Norris stated.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) is an Irish Catholic men’s organization. “We are dedicated to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, sworn to the protection of the Catholic Clergy, defense of the Constitution of the United States, and the advancement of the Irish culture,” Norris told Webb Weekly. “The motto of this organization is, ‘Friendship, Unity and true Christian Charity.’ We are a Fraternal, Beneficial, Social, Religious, and Charitable organization. Some of their larger charities are located here in the USA and Ireland.”

The local AOH meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Msgr. Fleming Center, 711 W. Edwin Street.

Williamsport Area Middle School Set to Present

“Beauty and the Beast Jr.”

The Williamsport Area Middle School is busy preparing for its opening night of this year’s musical, “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”

The show is set to begin at 7 p.m., Friday, March 24, with a matinee performance scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, March 25.

The show will follow the classic

story “of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.”

Among the cast and crew of about 50 students, the production stars Jaslin Shand as Belle, Tyler Pershall as Beast, Asher McClelland as Gaston, Asta Jackson as Mrs. Potts, Noel Veldhuis as Chip, Johanna Pelly as Lumiere and Cooper Gutberlet as Cogsworth.

Director Jennifer Wright, the middle school’s choral instructor, said she hopes the show will make the audience smile, laugh and feel the emotions of each character on stage.

“This particular cast of students has been a joy to work with,” she said. “The put their best effort and attitude into everything they do, pick up skills quickly, laugh at their mistakes and are

always working to improve.”

Wright said she’s watched the young group of actors grow in many ways by working in the production, making every effort to be sure their performance is exactly right to showcase their best.

“They are growing in self-confidence, creativity, communication skills and time management,” she added. “They are also learning to adapt and be flexible.”

Advanced tickets are on sale at WAMS in the main office during school hours. Tickets also will be available at the door before each show. Prices are $8 for adults and $5 students (ages 2-18).

Note: This is the sixth and final article in a series entitled “The Five Investments.” Previous articles are always available at www.webbweekly.com.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31.

On the night Jesus was betrayed, He replaced the second greatest command with a new command: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another. John 13:34-35

In the old command, we were directed to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. In the new command, we are directed to love one another as Jesus loved us. In doing so, Jesus greatly amplified the command to love.

Who is One Another?

When Jesus commanded them to love their neighbor, the question was, “Who is my neighbor?” See Luke 10:25-37. In response, Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan. It seems fair then for us to ask, “Who is one another?”

The English one another is translated from the Greek allelon. It is a reciprocal pronoun. Reciprocal can mean given by each side, but it can also mean given or done in return for something else. Jesus clarifies the meaning of reciprocal by letting us know we are to love allelon in return for what He has already done for us—not for what they have done or will do for us. Loving allelon isn’t about getting something in return from them. No, it’s about loving others because Jesus has already fully loved us. That’s really important to remember because loving allelon isn’t easy – especially when the people we love bite us in return.

Specifically, though, who is allelon? The answer: anyone who isn’t me—and that means everyone.

We ask, “But how? How can I offer love to allelon when they are so wrong or so messed up or so repulsive or so sinful? Won’t my loving them risk communicating that I approve of their sin?” It’s a big concern that keeps a lot of self-justifying religious people from obeying Jesus’ new command.

We need to ask ourselves, “Is that what happened when God expressed His love to us, sinners? Did we see His demonstration of love as an approval of our sinfulness?” Of course not. His demonstration of selfless love actually helped us to see our sin and condemnation and our need of a Savior.

Real love softens our hearts so we can see ourselves more clearly.

Paul reminds us, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8. God expressed His love for us when we were still sinners. Did He take the risk to do so? He certainly did. He knew that some would reject His love and that others would take advantage of it or twist it to justify themselves. He knew some would hate it and even fight against it—but He loved us anyway.

It is the high risk of offering grace—and He offered it knowing full well the risk He was taking. From the cross, Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Even as He was dying on a cross we nailed Him to, Jesus continued to pour out grace. Amazing.

It must be awful for God to watch us withhold His love and grace from allelon in an effort to protect the grace He risked so much to give. We who have received boundless grace resist passing that grace on to allelon for fear of what they might do with it. It makes no sense at all, yet grace protection continues to be one of the greatest sins of self-justifying Christians.

My friends, our job is to pass the grace of love on to allelon, and what allelon does with that grace is not our concern. Why?

First, because God is the only Lawgiver and Judge. See James 4:12, Romans 14, Matthew 7:1-6. Even referring to allelon as sinners (love the sinner, hate the sin) puts us in a precarious position. It is not our role to judge allelon; instead, it is our responsibility to love allelonas freely as God loved us. See

Matthew 10:18

Second, because we know without a doubt that we are sinners. If we claim we aren’t, we accuse God of being a liar. See 1

John 1:8-10

Jesus warned us about the wooden beam in our own eye. See Matthew 7:3-5. Instead of worrying over what allelon does, we would be far better served to take a hard look at what we do. It’s likely we’re the ones who are actually taking advantage of God’s grace.

Third, because it is not our role to convict allelon of sin. That job is accomplished by the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and, yes, love. See John 16:1-15 and Hebrews 4:12. Instead of trying to convict allelon, maybe we need to consider more carefully the sins God is convicting us of—and our shameless ability to utterly ignore it.

Maybe we need to confess that our desire to keep the attention on the sinners and their sins is really an effort to keep the attention off us and our sins – that our piety is nothing more than stinking religious hypocrisy. Maybe we need to confess that our sin, no matter how common or acceptable it may seem to us, is still dirty, rotten, stinking sin in the eyes of our supremely holy and pure God.

And maybe we need to confess that we withhold love from allelon, not because we’re trying to protect God’s grace, but because we just don’t want to love or be around certain kinds of people.

Maybe we just need to confess, and be broken, and love allelon wholeheartedly because Jesus first loved us. Maybe then the world would know we belong to Jesus.

County Hall Corner: The Horror of Human Trafficking In Lycoming County!

When I was in high school back in what seems like a million years ago, I had to study a 14th-century epic poem by Dante Alighieri entitled “The Divine Comedy.” It was no comedy in my book, as it poetically described a journey through Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Heaven). Inferno is what most folks know about, as Dante’s imagination is designed around poetic justice; the worst sins get the worst punishments. He certainly scared the hell out of me with images of drowning in a boiling lake of blood or, even worse, a lake of excrement where the souls are standing on the tips of their toes to just get their noses and mouths barely above the sludge to be able to breathe — and demons on the banks using sticks to make waves in the water.

My mind went in this direction while sitting down with Anne Reiner, director and feature writer for the online news source, On the Pulse (onthepulsenews.com), as she shared her research on the disgusting plague of human trafficking in our area. Anne launched ‘On the Pulse’ with a colleague, Noah Beiter, in January of 2019, designed to be an in-depth local news and cutting-edge multi-media coverage type website, especially focused on young folks such as herself. Since then, Anne has produced some amazing stories, from feel-good arti-

cles on local history, arts, and culture to gritty stuff like juvenile crime. She even went to Tanzania in Africa to report on the work of Dr. Alex Nesbitt, medical director of The Gatehouse and Family Hospice, part of UPMC Home Healthcare of Central Pennsylvania.

But throughout the past five years of her research for On the Pulse, Anne has never lost her passion for telling the story of human trafficking in our area. She has interviewed caregivers and victims at the YWCA in Williamsport and Harrisburg, the Silent No

More Foundation in Williamsport, Transitions PA in Lewisburg, and more.

What Anne discovered in her research was quite surprising. When most people hear about human trafficking, they picture girls locked in cages or Asian girls being bused from New York City, but the reality is much closer to home. Many of these children used for sexual purposes have parents who offer them money to meet their drug habits, and these can be in any neighborhood. Yes, even those in ‘nice’ neighborhoods have such things

going on. Amazingly, Anne has been able to get local victims to talk about their dreadful experiences.

Yet for all this research work, it still takes money to get it out to the public, and that requires sponsors. Fortunately, Anne found sponsoring support with Lycoming College and UPMC, and especially Seven Mountains Media, owned and operated by Kristin Cantrell, which was the biggest catalyst in making it possible to get as big an audience as possible for a truly first-class documentary.

“The Hidden Truth of Human Traf-

ficking in Pennsylvania’’ will be premiered at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 18th, at the Klump Academic Center Auditorium at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. This premier is free to the public.

Still need some convincing? Check out the two-minute trailer, “The Harsh Realities of Human Trafficking,” at onthepulsenews.com, which introduces the documentary that will be presented at the premiere. The more we know, the more we can do about this horrible plague in our own backyard.

The latest data from Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. To help reduce the number of cancer deaths, a wide variety of screenings are used by health care providers across the country.

Regular visits with your primary

care provider usually include the recommended initial assessments, but it never hurts to advocate for yourself during these appointments. Be in the know of what cancer screenings to expect for your age range and ensure that you are getting screened accordingly.

Ages 25-39

Family history plays a big role for when and what kind of cancer screenings should begin. If an immediate family member of yours gets diagnosed with a certain type of cancer, it is important to

know his or her age at diagnosis. You will likely start screenings ten years prior to that age. For example, if your father was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at age 45, it is likely your doctor would recommend your colorectal cancer screenings begin at age 35.

Other than taking your family history into account, the main cancer testing that begins during this time of life is for cervical cancer. If you’re 25 years old and have a cervix, you should be tested for HPV, a sexually transmitted infection that can cause this kind of cancer or others. This test should reoccur every five years until the age of 65.

Ages 40-49

At 40, the choice to begin breast cancer screening with annual mammograms is available. Mammograms use x-ray imaging to look for signs of breast cancer that are not visible. This decision can help be made by having a conversation with your doctor, but ultimately, yearly mammograms should begin at age 45 at the latest. However, if you notice changes at any age, it is important to tell your doctor right away.

Colonoscopies are the most common way to screen for colon cancer and should begin at age 45. They allow doctors to view the colon and rectum and search for any abnormalities that indicate cancer. If your first colonoscopy doesn’t show anything alarming, you can likely wait 10 years between screenings until the age of 75.

Those who are African American, or who are Caribbean of African ancestry, are at a higher risk of prostate cancer and should begin screenings the recommended age of those of average risk. Screenings for these individuals should begin at 45.

Ages 50 and Up

In addition to the screenings that began before the age of 50, it is time to start thinking about your lungs and your prostate.

Annual CT scans of your lungs may be an option, especially if you have a history of smoking. This would involve those who have quit within the last 15 years, or if there’s a 20-pack history (an average of one pack of cigarettes per day for one year) or more.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men in the United States next to skin cancer. It is twice as likely to occur in those who are over 70 years old. Cancer is easiest to treat when caught early and if you have any concerns, mention them to your doctor immediately. Take charge of your health by screening often. Managing cancer screenings throughout your lifetime is vital for your overall wellbeing.

Bill Nighy the Screen Guy: Actor’s Best Work Now Streaming

This piece was written before — but published after — the 2023 Academy Awards, during which Britain’s Bill Nighy competed for Best Actor.

But even if Nighy wound up losing to Brendan Fraser, his many fans still have cause to celebrate — because the film he was tapped for is now available to stream! Simply titled “Living,” it stands as the crowning achievement on Nighy’s impressive 75-film resume.

Pronounced “Nye” — like TV’s wellknown “science guy” — Nighy is one of those actors you immediately recognize, even if his name doesn’t always ring a bell. He’s the tall and slender chap with fair, wavy hair who charmed us in such films as “About Time,” “Love Actually” and 2020’s “Emma,” starring Anya Taylor-Joy; he also played Davy Jones in the second “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

A late 2022 release that recently finished a brief run at Muncy’s Regal, “Living” is based on “Ikiru,” the lesserknown 1952 masterpiece by legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. It was scripted by Nobel-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, whose “Never Let Me Go” and “Remains of the Day”

were likewise made into fine motion pictures.

“Living” is set in 1950s London, with Nighy as a useless bureaucrat shuffling papers in a stuffy London office with about as much excitement as a frozen mud-puddle. Indeed, when the cadaverous “Mr. Williams” suddenly learns he has advanced cancer, he confesses to a stranger that he’d like to live a little.

But he doesn’t know how.

Like its Japanese predecessor, “Living” will show its stiffly starched protagonist starting to unbend as he tries first family, then fun, then friendship and finally kindness to give some meaning to his final months.

Never better, Nighy consistently underplays a role that calls for great restraint while also allowing that twinkle-in-the-eye for which this actor is so famous. And speaking of performers: Aimee Lou Wood, of Netflix’s “Sex Education,” is simply sensational as a kind-hearted coworker with whom Williams finally connects; she should’ve nailed an Oscar nom as well.

Another triumph is this movie’s

understated approach to the inherent melodrama of such tropes as terminal illness and the search for meaning. In the latter case, Ishiguro focuses on the moderate and modest, stressing that no legacy is spotless or eternal; that it’s best to pick one or two good things and do them well; and that for Williams especially, it will be tough to break through to full freedom after so

many years of zombie-like existence.

Indeed, Ishiguro plays it so low-key that many will find the first hour slow — though that is also true of “Ikiru,” which is 40 minutes longer than this film. But stick with it: During one late café scene between Williams and his young lady-friend, “Living” unleashes an emotional deluge, which thereafter just keeps flowing deeper and stronger.

Second only to the brilliantly acted “Till” (also now streaming), this was one of my favorites from 2020; Nighy fans shouldn’t miss it.

And frankly, neither should anyone else.

The Roving Sportsman… Creating a Management Plan

Most people would agree that if you are serious about accomplishing a goal, you need a plan. This becomes even more critical when you are looking at a complex set of goals, and time and money may be limited. Such just might be the case if you are a landowner, a member of a hunting club that owns its own property, or want to help in bettering the hunting and habitat at one of your favorite hunting destinations. A management plan is key to success, whether you are dealing with just a few acres or hundreds of acres. So, how does one go about setting up such a plan?

The first step is to accomplish a current inventory of the property’s assets. How many acres do you have to work with, what is the makeup of the acreage (fallow fields, cropland, woodlots, hedgerows, or forested tracts), and what is the terrain (level ground, sloping hillsides, or a combination of the two)? Is there water somewhere on the property (a small creek, stream, or pond)? What cover and what food are provided on the property by the existing vegetation? And finally, what species of wildlife have been frequently sighted on the property, and are they living there or merely passing through? When all of these listings are complete, incorporate them as the beginning of your plan so that you have a basis from which to start.

Next, make a list of realistic goals that you hope to accomplish as to the changes or additions you would like to implement. This is really a two-part segment of your overall plan, first identifying what species of wildlife you would like to make changes for and secondly, what changes will you make.

Is your main interest in improving the deer hunting on your property? Or do you want to increase the successful hunting of spring or fall turkeys on your land? If you are a rabbit hunter or an upland game hunter who wants better grouse hunting, there are numerous things you can do for each of these game animals and birds — some improvements may be expensive to implement and timeconsuming, and yet some are low-cost and take little time to complete. But initially, you need to list the wildlife species you want to benefit most and then list whether your desire is to provide better cover or better food sources, or both — depending on the initial inventory of the land’s resources that you have completed.

Establish a section of your plan for the management of your fields and open areas and another section for the management of your woodlots and forested tracts.

You can liken caring for either the fields or the woods to caring for a vegetable garden. In a vegetable garden, you must continually eliminate weeds and sometimes fertilize the vegetable plants. If you do not, the aggressive weeds will soon overtake the good plants, and the garden will not be productive.

The very same occurs if you leave fields or woods completely unattended. The fields will be slowly taken over by undesirable invasive species such as multifloral rose, autumn olive, barberry, and Tartarian honeysuckle. Periodic mowing and perhaps occasional spraying should keep these things in check and benefit the desirable plants that you want to promote.

Woodlots and forests in north central Pennsylvania can easily become overrun with undesirable species such as striped maple and New York or hay-scented ferns. Spraying of herbicides is the most effective way of eliminating both of these invasive plants. Based on your goals for your desired species of wildlife, you might also consider some type or types of harvesting some of the trees. A timber stand improvement

with emphasis on removing less desirable trees and leaving the healthier and more desirable species is usually a good step to include in your plan, and it may provide some income that can be used to complete other projects in your plan. Clearcuts are usually not recommended over large areas, but when accomplished in small plots, can create beneficial openings in an otherwise completely forested area.

Once you have completed these steps and you have all of your ideas in writing, it is time to turn to the “experts” so that they may analyze and help fine-tune your game plan. They can help develop a timetable for your overall plan and suggest some programs that may be available to you to maximize your time and help control costs. We’ll look at that in the next installment.

Outdoors with Ken Hunter… Bird Watching

I’d be the first to admit that I am not an avid bird watcher; don’t misunderstand, I enjoy seeing and identifying all the different birds, but I am not a serious, dedicated bird watcher like some people I know. While I may not keep a check-off list of the birds I spot each year, as a wildlife artist, I am on the lookout for potential subject matter, and songbirds, game birds, and birds of prey all make great

painting subjects. Our vast assortment of birdlife is also highly sought after by those into nature photography, but I think it’s safe to say that most people enjoy having a variety of birds in their neighborhood, explaining the many birdfeeders evident in backyards.

Of course, as spring moves in, our bird population here in central Pennsylvania begins to increase. I’m sure many have spotted the numerous flocks of

snow geese that are frequently passing overhead or turning a nearby field white. Another sign that spring is finally on the way is the sighting of the first robin. I spotted my first robin a couple of weeks ago perched in a spruce tree, and several of my friends have told me they, too, have been seeing robins. It’s interesting to note that while we are on the lookout for the spring arrivals, some birds, like the Great Horned Owl and the Bald Eagle, which thrive here all winter, may already be hatching eggs.

Those who have kept their birdfeeders full all winter have likely been watching cardinals, Juncos, chickadees, nuthatches, House Finches, maybe

some woodpeckers, and undoubtedly some crows. As we move into spring, we will be on the lookout for our first sighting of bluebirds and, eventually, our first hummingbird. Another sure sign that spring has finally arrived is your first sighting of a Baltimore oriole. My daughter-in-law seems to have great success in attracting the orioles with sliced oranges out on the back deck. We have tried the same offering, but with very little success, however, I’m sure the “oriole competition” will take place again this year.

I probably don’t have to tell you, but birdfeeders don’t just feed birds. I haven’t had birdfeeders up for a while

now because the bears pulled them down and hauled them off to the woods. I’m going to try to rig some up high enough and far enough away from trees to prevent the bears from getting at them. Another frequent and probably unwelcomed visitor to your feeder is a squirrel, or maybe I should say squirrels. Supposedly, they make “squirrel-proof” feeders, but they don’t always work. I recently read something that sounds like it will help prevent squirrels from getting to your feeders. Stretching a thin, taut wire between two points and then suspending your feeder from the stretched wire is a good start. Now I know that squirrels can run across fairly

thin wires with great ease, but you can go a step further to prevent that. Cut the ends off some 35mm film canisters and place them on the wire at various intervals; the spinning canister does not allow the squirrel to get a grip. If 35mm canisters are not available, try using pieces of garden hose or plastic soda bottles; the idea is to create a wide enough obstacle that the squirrel is unable to walk or jump while running the wire.

Well, I’m sure we’ll all be watching for the birds of summer to arrive, and if you have a squirrel problem, maybe you can even spin a squirrel or two on a tight line.

Sports Have No Off-Season

For area high school athletes participating in baseball, softball, tennis, and track & field, the dawning of March 6 was anticipated by all. The date marked ‘the official’ beginning of practice permitted by the PIAA for spring sports.

South Williamsport softball coach Tom O’Malley spent hours before his squad’s afternoon practice time riding a tractor — preparing the soft infield dirt for the upcoming workout. Coaches throughout the area were doing similar chores, ensuring everything was ready. After a mild winter and a hint of spring in the air, both players and coaches were eager to proceed with outdoor workouts.

But just when things were ready to go, Mother Nature and Punxsutawney Phil made sure they were not among the forgotten by greeting all with a blanket of wet, heavy snow on day two of the athletic proceedings. Despite the spring sports label, next week’s official arrival of the season was not truly ready for an early arrival.

Despite the PIAA’s March 6 blessing, the date was not the first workout

for any of the spring sports squads. In many cases, those preparations have been underway since early January, with coaches conducting ‘voluntary workouts’ to develop skills and evaluate players’ talents. While useful for a team’s preparation purposes, the growing practice presents a bit of a wild, wild west environment.

A decade or so ago, the PIAA opted to relax what had been firm starting dates for each season’s team practice to commence. The state’s governing scholastic sports body truly found itself between the proverbial ‘rock & a hard place.’ While hoping to maintain the sanctity of each sport’s seasonal play, the growing reality of ‘everybody’s doing it’ presented a monumental policing challenge. Such practice restrictions were greatly relaxed, and although some guidelines still exist as to what can and cannot be done during teams’ off-season, creative coaches can and do find ways to conduct such workouts undaunted.

Adding to the dilemma is the recent change in season’s start instituted by the PIAA. Beginning with football,

each season now starts one week earlier than what had been the case. Football teams are now playing regular season games in August, basketball teams are playing before December’s arrival, and the spring sports squads have been moved up a week to early March.

While the change provides most spring sports teams the opportunity to conclude their seasons prior to high school commencement activities (except for state finals competitions), the earlier practice start dates exasperate the multi-sports athletes’ time and dedication to the sports he/ she may be currently playing and whatever sport may be next on the schedule.

I have long been a proponent of high school athletes playing multiple sports. The smaller schools need athlete participation to be competitive and, in some cases, need them just to have numbers to field teams. But playing multiple sports can put studentathletes in difficult situations, and the problem doesn’t seem to have any seasonal specification.

During the summer, many athletes participate in a variety of baseball, soccer, and basketball activities. At the same time, the fall high school coaches are expecting these same athletes to begin spending more time getting ready for the fall season. As

the fall season is underway, basketball coaches are conducting open gyms, and fall coaches are concerned their athletes may get injured in these offseason activities. When basketball and wrestling are in-season, baseball, softball, and football coaches and conducting off-season workouts.

The cycle seems never-ending, and often the athlete that truly likes to play multi-sports is caught in the middle. A solution seems simple — play the inseason sport, and move on to the next sport when that season is completed. All that would take is cooperation and understanding of the parties involved.

The winter sports season has produced excitement and memorable moments for many of the area schools. Many basketball teams earned their way into the state tournament field, and Chocolate Town was the final destination for a bevy of District IV wrestlers hoping to bring home gold.

The NCAA March Madness currently has the sports world’s center stage, but the high school seasons get underway by month’s end. Bundle up and get out and enjoy the talents on display by so many young people.

Congratulations to those who compete and the coaches that guide them. May the three-sport athlete continue to survive in what is becoming an everdemanding sports environment.

Ihad every intention of writing a great column. But then I experienced a few misfortunes. Beware of the Ides of March, kids. We were spoiled this winter. And now the snow is coming. We have a beautiful new terminal. I will fill you in later. My original plan was to tell you more about the Loyalsock Lady Lancers. Perhaps give a little love to my man Curtis Jacobson. But I don’t want to jinx my good friend and his team. He is a great coach. His squad never misses a beat. Some of the stars leave because of graduation, but he reloads because of his great program. Keep it going, kid. This past week was a nightmare. And my mishaps are too good not to share. You simply can’t make this up, folks. Yes. I am rather unlucky. But I will keep chugging. My father and I are still building that addition. We have everything roofed, and we are hoping to have things wrapped up by 2024.

Pops had to get back to California. I am doing my best with his massive punch list. This R45 insulation is quite heavy. I am itchy. Jensen has been great. My son will occasionally help. We make many visits to Lowes when my father is gone. You might have seen his recent video. Yes. It has gone viral. Poor Jensen slipped when he was pushing the fully loaded flat truck. The kid was obviously struggling. Those things are tough to operate. He was taking out many displays. So, I hit the record button. I was only hoping to document. It was hilarious. Jensen lost control, and the cart came to a crashing halt. A large bag of insulation fell on his head. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt. We played dumb as there was a major cleanup in Aisle 19. Fantastic. I have since sent this candid to a friend in LA. He is a producer for AFV. I will keep you posted. My parents needed a ride from the airport. They were flying in for a brief visit. Dad wanted to be

present for our drywall inspection. I left work a tad early. It was already snowing. Their flight was scheduled to get into Harrisburg around 5:15. I took my time driving. The roads were getting slippery. I made it to the Sheetz just outside of Duncannon. My father called and said there was a delay. They were stuck in Philadelphia. I was told to sit tight. I patiently waited. A few locals were concerned for my well-being. They asked if I was stranded. Heck. I even saw an old hoops friend. Do you need a ride coach? I am good. Thanks.

Big Jim gave me an update. They canceled his flight to Harrisburg because of the weather. He mentioned he could score two seats on one that was heading to State College. I told him that I was on my way.

By now, it was really snowing. I made it halfway there, and my phone rang again. It was my father who told me to stop. There was a major bomb threat. The State College Airport was on complete lockdown. No planes. Where are the dogs?

My rents were still stranded in Philadelphia. I told them not to worry. I made another U-turn and finally made it to Motown. I was all over the map of Pennsylvania that Friday. I picked up my parents around midnight. We made it home by 3:15 a.m. I didn’t mind. My folks have done the same for me on many occasions. It was a long day, but unfortunately, that’s how it goes when you are traveling from CA to Cogan Station. Williamsport has a beautiful new terminal. Cheers.
