t is beginning to look a lot like Christmas everywhere you go across the West Branch Valley. This Christmas carol seems perfect as we head into December. The song has been recorded by many artists over the years with different musical styles. I’m still old school and like Bing Crosby’s version the best. The song was written by Meredith Wilson in 1951. Bing was the first to record it that same year. Another name that comes to mind is Perry Como, and his version is very popular. As well as Michael Bublé, I think a lot of younger people today think he wrote and recorded the song. I’m sure as you’re reading this, you’re thinking about your favorite version. The one thing I can say is it definitely puts a little extra Christmas spirit in your step. It’s the perfect background music as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season kicks off. Our Christmas traditions have begun at our Webb Weekly office. I always know our Blaise Alexander Christmas Fun Coloring Contest has begun when the elves show up on loan from the North Pole. Editor Steph has complete details about the contest and the elves
when you flip the page. I just want to warn everybody: if you stop by our office, please look where you’re stepping; the last thing I need this time of year is a workman’s comp claim from one of Santa’s employees. Not to mention, the last thing you need is to make the naughty list because of a mishap. I have elf-crossing signs posted for their safety. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers make sure the young folks work their Christmas artistic magic and help them get entered. A tip of my Santa hat to the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships. They have been with us since the very beginning of the Christmas coloring contest. It’s time for my annual ringing of the bell for the Salvation Army Williamsport. I’m sure many of you reading know the story, but in case you forget, or for new readers, I’ll give you a quick overview. Dave Sechler was one of the most selfless individuals I have ever met. He would give The Salvation Army blazer off his back to anybody who asked. This held true in every aspect of his life, not just his efforts for The Salvation Army.
Sech always had a smile on his face and was one of the kindest folks you would ever come across. Like so many people whose life’s journey crossed mine, it was through sports that I first Jim met Dave. For decades, Webb Jr. he took care of basketball and most events held in the gymnasium at the Salvation Army. I was very fortunate Sech let me be involved in hoops at the Sal at a very young age. It was from that we built a friendship that lasted his lifetime. Dave was always working for the good and loved Christmas time. I would always see him out, making sure the bell was ringing and giving special attention to the annual Red Kettle program. Again, you couldn’t miss him with that big smile and kind words that ended with a Merry Christmas to all. It was this memory that prompted the idea for our Annual Red Kettle Remembrance in Dave’s honor and his lifetime of effort in helping people. If you would like to read more about Dave and how this began, my columns from 6/4/14 “So Long Sech” and from 12/10/14 “Red Kettle Remembrance” are posted at webbweekly.com. I’m a big believer in the great work
The Salvation Army does locally. The donations made are used locally to help individuals in a multitude of ways. Some folks might just need a helping hand during the Christmas season. Some might need a helping hand all year long. They provide a wide variety of services to help adults and children from every walk of life. Dave epitomized their mission to simply help anyone who needed a helping hand. So, it is in this spirit our Red Kettle is set up in the front of our office. We will again be doubling any donation you make either by stopping in or mailing it to Webb Weekly, 280 Kane Street, Suite 2, South Williamsport 17702. If you are mailing it in, please mark the envelope “Remembering Dave.” Webb Weekly matches the first $5,000 in donations. And after that, we see where our combined efforts take us. For anyone who drops by in person, we will have a Webb Weekly mug full of candy for the extra effort. Please feel free to share any conversation about Dave, The Salvation Army, and Christmastime. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years. Please try to make a difference for the good in whatever way you choose. God Bless America.

ell y’all, it’s one of my favorite times of year! The Blaise Alexander Christmas Fun Coloring Contest is in full swing! Thanksgiving is officially behind us, so now it’s time to move fully into the Christmas season! My tree is going up this weekend and all the decorating will be done too! I even bought some fun inflatables for the yard and Booker some new Doggy Christmas Jammies. Unfortunately, it’s really difficult to find ones big enough for Bulleit! I haven’t started any shopping yet, but if you’ve been reading me for any length of time, you know I am last minute all the way for shopping. I always manage to pull it off in the end, but duuuude, it gets close some years! Nothing says Christmas around the Webb Weekly office like when The Blaise Alexander Christmas Coloring Contest begins! We have entries coming in left and right, and our elves are hard at work. If you haven’t heard, every year I bring in elves, straight from the North Pole, to help me out. They are helping judge the entries, along with keeping them sorted by age group, and compiling the list of names to be published the

eagan Murray has always been interested in helping others and improving their lives. It was with that in mind that at the age of 15, she used her birthday money, and money collected in yard sales she held that year, to purchase and collect 36 gifts to give to the women and children who would be spending their Christmas staying at the shelter at Wise Options at the YWCA. She wrapped the gifts herself because she wanted to have the children have wrapped Christmas gifts just like everyone else. It has since evolved into a charitable initiative called “Meagan’s Box Foundation,” whose motto is, “Every Child Deserves a Merry Christmas.” Now, 25 years later, in addition to toys, the foundation provides blankets, books, and shoes. Meagan has always had an interest in helping others and has chosen to do that as her chosen profession. She majored in Human Services at the Pennsylvania College of Technology and
is currently employed at the Roads to Freedom Center For Independent Living. “When this project started twenty-five years ago, I simply wanted to brighten the Christmas holiday for children who were less fortunate. Over the years, in the local communities, businesses, organizations, churches, individuals, and even other children have given the foundation its wings,” Meagan told Webb Weekly. She said she was a teenager when this project took its first steps, and like every dream, it takes a support system to make any idea a reality. Her entire family and close friends have always been there behind her, helping to make it happen. “Each year after Christmas and into the new year, we shop for the winter clothing, coats, and blankets on sale for our children next year. When the weather gets warm, we buy toys, books, school supplies, shoes, and stuffed animals at the best price for our budget. We give gifts for infants up to teens 18 years of age. Inside each box, there is usually a new outfit, pajamas, socks,

ers to support Meagan’s Box Foundation throughout the year. One of the most important is the Meagan’s Box Foundation Golf Tournament that will be held next year. Meagan said the tournament organizers are seeking sponsors for it; if you are interested in being a sponsor or supporting the foundation, you can email megarita422@gmailcom or murf825@gmail.com or call 570-5843186 or 570-494-6355.

a book, and a small toy. We want our boxes to be full of comfort and joy,” Meagan said. Meagan stated that even after all these years, she still takes a moment each Christmas morning and visualizes the children opening their presents. Last year, in 2022, Meagan’s Box Foundation was able to wrap over 2,000 gifts for the community. “Our main goal is to bring joy to the children and also give a hand up to parents struggling to provide Christmas for their families.” “It’s not about how big the project grows, but more so, I am hoping that in the future, I will continue to have the support that is necessary to reach the children that need it most. I hope that in some way those who receive a hand up from Meagan’s Box will be inspired to pay it forward when they can,” declared Meagan. The local organizations that are supported by Meagan’s Box Foundation include Wise Options, Liberty House, Family Promise, Saving Grace Shelter, the Foster Care programs of Lycoming County Department of Children and Youth, children of AIDS Resources, Dwell Orphan Care, Pediatric Division of Bayada, Families United Network of Muncy, Son Light House of Muncy, and families and children that are referred to Meagan’s Boxes. W
e still have a month left in 2023, but the upcoming year may be one of this century’s most important years, and we need to get ready. The United States has never been more divided than it is right now. Given that even antisemitism is publicly displayed, and in the spirit of ‘diversity’ considered acceptable in today’s society, there appears to be nothing that we Americans can agree on. The coming year will either keep us on the same course we are in now or result in a seismic change of direction. Hopefully, a good change is in the wind because right now, the United States is in a real mess both socially, economically, and politically. Everything starts at the top, so we should consider the upcoming presidential race first. Unfortunately, the frontrunners for the two major parties are both seriously flawed. The incumbent, President Joe Biden, has the lowest approval rating since Jimmy Carter, who lost to Ronald Reagan in 1980 by an electoral vote of 489 to 49 (more on this later). Yet the Republican candidate Donald Trump, who is miles ahead of the other Republican candidates, is dealing with a host of lawsuits and a resistance that is almost maniacal. Both parties seem to have their hands tied behind their backs, given that both Biden and Trump are far and away the odds-on favorites for their respective parties. However, much may happen in the next
few months, and it would not be a surprise if one or even both of these men will not be on the ballot next November. Who would replace them, however, is anyone’s guess. Pennsylvania will be electing a US Senator in 2024, with the incumbent Democrat Bob Casey Jr., running against the Republican Dave McCormick. Casey has held the position since 2007 and has secured a good war chest in funds for the coming election. However, his Democrat colleague John Fetterman has made national news, and not in a good way, which may result in a pushback to Casey. Dave McCormick is an excellent challenger and should make this race tight. In the Pennsylvania House and Senate, the incumbents will be running again. In our region, this would be Senator Gene Yaw and Representatives Joe Hamm and Jamie Flick; all three are Republicans. Senator Yaw would seem a lock; the only pushback may be his age, given that he will turn 81 in February. Joe Hamm and Jamie Flick have been extremely hard-working reps; our region is fortunate to have them. Of course, they do not have one hundred percent customer satisfaction, but who does? Outside of something very unusual, all three should probably win comfortably. That is the field of candidates for us, but the playing field is where the mess is. The mainstream media has become a political weapon, evidenced most vividly by the widely featured

letter three years ago from 51 senior intelligence officials that the email disclosures from Hunter Biden’s laptop had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” It turned out to be a lie, a political move to protect President Biden’s presidential run. The recent release of videos from the infamous ‘insurrection’ on January 6, 2021, proves most of that hype was propaganda. And the country is still digging out of the hole from the COVID shutdowns, which started originally “to flatten the curve” and then got extended over two years. Oddly enough, our present situation is strikingly similar to where our country was fifty years ago. Those of us who lived in the 1970s remember it as an awful decade. Politics were ugly, with President Nixon forced to resign rather than being impeached from office. The Yom Kippur War in 1973 resulted in an oil embargo by the OPEC countries, which caused gas prices to triple and inflation to go through the roof. The Republicans were blamed for almost all of this, which created an opening for the one-term Georgia governor Jimmy Carter to get elected in 1976. President Jimmy Carter had some positive initiatives, but he was portrayed as weak. A vivid illustration of this was the Iranian students storming the US Embassy in Tehran on November 4th, 1979, and holding as hostages more than 50 Americans. The Iranians scoffed at international diplomatic immunity and held these US citizens and State Department officials hostage for 444 days. Not coincidentally, they released the hostages on the inauguration
day of Ronald Reagan. The troubled national economy and the international upheavals of that decade are not unlike what we are facing today. President Carter was not exactly inept, but he seemed out of his depth as president. Ronald Reagan had been a two-time governor of California in the 1960s but was still mostly recognized as a Hollywood actor and was also up in age. In the only televised debate with President Carter on October 28, 1980, Reagan closed his comments by looking into the camera and asked a very simple question, “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” In that spirit, we should ask every incumbent, what have you done within your sphere of influence to make our community, state, or country stronger, more stable, and more prosperous? We should ask any candidate for office to not just tell us about their education or experience but exactly what they will do to increase our standard of living, protect our homes and community, and educate our children successfully. This next election will bring us into 2026, which is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Our country has been a hope for the world for over two centuries, but I question if this will continue if we stay on the present course. Finger-pointing and name-calling are great theater, but it is time for the grownups to show up now. Our leaders should be providing us with answers and not anger — hope, and not horror — and show respect for our country’s strengths, our traditions, and our heritage.

his is an important article — especially for a good man. Why? Because only a good man can suffer a scandalous moral failure. When evil men do evil things, no one notices, but when a good man does something evil, everyone notices. If you’re
a good man, then I strongly encourage you to read this article. Moral failures happen every day. There are reasons why they happen. The reasons are not excuses — there is never any excuse for a moral failure. However, learning the reasons why moral failures happen can be a tremendous protection for a good man. Let’s jump in: Moral failure is always possible. We are all vulnerable. Gravity affects everyone. If you think you can defy gravity, you’re already en route to a moral failure.

ba, found in II Samuel 11, as an illustration. If you’re unfamiliar with this scandalous story, reading it first will be very helpful. Here is the pathway that leads toward moral failure: 1. Vulnerability - Everyone has vulnerabilities — and we don’t get to choose them. No one escapes gravity, not even you. David’s life story reveals he was clearly vulnerable to women. 2. Intensification - The various factors that intensify our vulnerabilities, leaving us more susceptible to temptation. David had just concluded an extremely successful war campaign. Rest after an intense season intensified his vulnerability. Yes, success can intensify vulnerability — and every successful man needs to be aware of it. Again, only a good man can fall. 3. Opportunity - A temptation that presents

The Five Failures of Us Backstory to a Scandal
Moral failure is always predictable. The journey toward moral failure always travels the same pathway. There is nothing new here. The devil has been utilizing the same tricks since Adam and Eve. Moral failure is always preventable. Because a moral failure is predictable, it is also preventable. God’s Word makes that promise in I Corinthians 10:13, Ephesians 6:10-18, and Romans 14:4. A good man can live a good life and finish well. We cannot claim the devil made us do something. God has promised us that we can stand against temptation. Doing so requires God’s grace, but it also requires education and determination. This article is intended to provide education. Determination is up to you. I pray you have it. I am using King David’s story with Bathshe-

itself during a time of intensified vulnerability. He saw Bathsheba at the most inopportune time. 4. Rationalization - Reasons and arguments we employ to self-justify a scandalous decision. David figured he deserved a little pleasure after leading so sacrificially and successfully. Have you ever felt that way? 5. Blackout - The inability to consider the destructive and far-reaching consequences of a moral failure. The blackout stage is dangerous. We’ve all experienced it. David wasn’t thinking about Uriah or Israel or what was best for Bathsheba. For a moment, all he could think of was himself. 6. Freefall - The exhilaration experienced when crossing a moral line. Let’s be honest: sin is exciting for a moment. I don’t need to go into detail here — you get the point. 7. Awareness/Impact - The sudden return of the ability to consider the consequences of failure. What was I thinking? What have I done? For David, that moment came when Bathsheba reported she was pregnant. 8. Cover-up - The extensive methods utilized to conceal failure. David compounds his moral failure by committing moral failure. It is one of the worst stories in the entire Bible. David’s evil schemes worked — he got away with it. 9. Exposure - The failure and cover-up become known to others. God sends Nathan the Prophet to expose David’s sin. Listen closely — God loves you, and He has a purpose for your life. He will not let you get away with evil. Friend, you will be caught and exposed. I have warned you. 10. Fallout - The full consequences of the
failure amplified by the anger, disappointment, and grief of the victims. Bathsheba was a victim. So was her dead baby. So was Israel. When we fall, a lot of people suffer — even generations yet unborn. Give that some thought before you travel the pathway toward failure. 11. Fixing - The desperate effort of the fallen to make things right. Moral failure destroys lives. When something is destroyed, it is lost. It can never be fixed or made right. David fasted and prayed for God to fix his failure. It didn’t work. Moral failure can only be redeemed. We’re going to talk about redemption in the next article. 12. Regret - The self-loathing guilt and bitterness that weighs on the fallen, producing a downward spiral of self-defeating and self-destructive decisions. Thankfully, David doesn’t fall into Satan’s regret trap. Judas took Satan’s bait and committed suicide. David decides to travel the pathway toward redemption. Again, we’ll focus on redemption next week. Until then, know this: there is always hope. God’s grace can buy back what we have destroyed. God is not done with you. If you’re still reading this article, then it is proof that God is investing grace in you. Don’t give up — redemption is always possible! No one escapes God’s grace, not even you. Where are you on the pathway to moral failure? I urge you to think about the direction in which you are heading. You now know where it leads, so you can no longer claim ignorance. If you keep moving in the direction of failure, then you are being arrogant and reckless. I pray you change direction. Do it today — or it may be too late.

A
half century of effort to secure flood control for Williamsport culminated today with the groundbreaking ceremonies marking the beginning of work on the first unit of the five-million-dollar local project. Several hundred persons braved the freezing weather to witness the program. After congratulatory addresses from a specially constructed platform in the field between Fourth Street and the ballpark along Lycoming Creek, Mayor Leo C. Williamson turned the first spade of ground with a bronzed shovel. The ceremonies were arranged by the flood control committee of the Community Trade Association To the accompaniment of the Williamsport High School Band, the assemblage sang “America” and the heard John C. Youngman, chairman of
the flood control committee trace the history of “How We Got the Dikes.” He paid particular note to C.E. Noyes, manager of the C.T.A. as the guiding genius of the flood control effort. The speakers expressed great satisfaction that the long-awaited project is now underway and also emphasized the employment benefit to the city. Bordering the creek along the east bank were small white, red, and yellow flags. They mark the course of construction. It was explained the red flags denoted the right-of-way, the yellow — the slopes and the white — the center of the levee. Mr. Murray, a representative of the construction company expressed his hope that the enthusiasm with which Williamsport citizens promoted the flood control project would continue during construction operations and his company would have the benefit of it. He also said local labor will be used wherever possible.

Christmas Music by Candlelight
D
ecember 3, 2023, marks the 85th presentation of the Williamsport Music Club’s annual CHRISTMAS MUSIC BY CANDLELIGHT. The only year missed was 2020 due to COVID 19. The service, held on the first Sunday in December, is the club’s Christmas gift to the community. The first such service was at the First Baptist Church in 1937. The beautifully decorated sanctuary was the setting for boys in choir robes serving as ushers with members carrying lighted red candles and processing to “Adeste Fideles” as the congregation joined in the singing of the hymn. For the next three years the service was held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and in 1941 was moved to First United Methodist where it remained until 2014. From then to the present, Pine St. United Methodist Church has been its home. During the earlier years they fondly remember Miss Eva Buck’s cornet introduction to the first hymn, Mrs. John R. Kauffman III ringing her swiss bells, their own string ensemble, and three vocal ensembles: Juvenile, Junior (Student) and Senior — all of which appeared regularly to capacity audiences. It is interesting to note that the last remaining charter member, Dorothy Jacobs Streeter, died in 2012, 75 years after she capably served as chairperson of the very first service. Also, Mary Landon Russell, another charter member and well-known and beloved pianist and teacher who died in 2008, played numerous times at services throughout the years.
The oldest living member, Jane Keyte Landon, has served many times so well as piano soloist or accompanist, too. Traditionally, a free will offering at this service is given to a local charity. This year is the American Rescue Workers. As they present their 85th CHRISTMAS MUSIC BY CANDLELIGHT service on December 3rd, at 4:00 p.m., all are welcome to enjoy our musical gift to the community.

it because it had all these white cotton balls-looking things on it for snowflakes, but she had it for years. Way before ugly Christmas sweaters were even a thing. When I asked her if I could borrow her snowman sweater with the big snowflakes for an ugly Christmas sweater party, I think I kinda offended her — even though I (and my brother) had been teasing her about this sweater for years. It was worth asking, though, because guess who won first place for the ugliest Christmas sweater!? Yes, ME!!! First place for the most awesome snowman big snowball sweater you ever did see! Momma never wore that sweater after that. I asked her, “Hey, where is your first-place snowflake sweater? You haven’t worn it at all?” When she told me she got rid of it, I kinda felt bad for two reasons. One, she really did love that sweater and wore it through the winter. I felt bad that she felt so bad that she got rid of it. Two, that baby took first place! She got rid of a first-place sweater that could have won at more ugly Christmas sweater parties! That baby was still in its prime! Haha! So, it’s that time, y’all. Bust out the bougie fur coats and, sing Mariah, and borrow ugly sweaters from your Momma because the holidays are here!!

Olson (Hacks, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia). And Rizzo really hits his mark at the end; that moment with the inevitable one-point-difference at the climax of the championship game is somehow both predictable and unexpected. There are unlikely plot mechanics with Marcus’s harebrained scheme to raise money for his team’s tournament in Canada; and that may be one reason critics weren’t nuts about this film, ranking it a disappointing 58 at Rotten Tomatoes. Yet it managed to score a 95 with regular reviewers. You can count me among the 95. Critics: What do they know anyway?
Hudson (Ghostbusters), fresh-faced Matt Cook as an assistant coach and Cheech Marin — who has also gotten pretty touchy-feely of late. (Catch him in the sterling Little League drama Perfect Game if you get a chance!) As for the plot: In standard sports-story fashion, Harrelson’s Marcus will have to learn that his unsung new work-life and struggling team are happier places than the NBA, which has long been his goal and becomes a key plot-point later in the film. Meanwhile, Farrelly and screenwriter Mark Rizzo flesh out the tale with a lowkey love story involving Marcus and a local lass, beautifully played by Kaitlin

LIVING WELL Barbell. After I set the state mark, I attempted to break the IPA world record of 580 pounds. I attempted a lift of 582 1/2 pounds and had it off the floor, but I just couldn’t quite finish the lift. If I’m being honest, I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t get that world record. But I’m not short on confidence. I know there are certain areas I can work on, and there’s no doubt in my mind I have the ability to break that world record. And when I do get that record, all of Raider Nation is going to rejoice with me.

Dave: Speaking of Raider Nation (Die-hard fans of the Las Vegas Raider football team), since you brought it up, I am reminded of a story of you and former Raider coach and owner Al Davis. Please, please, please tell this story to my readers. Tom: Years ago, I went to the Pro Football Hall of Fame to see Howie Long get inducted. My favorite Raider of all time. This stretch limo pulls up, and Al Davis gets out. I couldn’t get near him, but later in the day, I saw a woman with a name tag on saying

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…
How to Style Knee High Boots
www.webbweekly.com

F
ashion trends swing back and forth from season to season, but as autumn rolls into the holidays, you can always count on the return of knee-high boots. Kneecap-grazing footwear is a fall-winter staple that pulls even the most casual looks together effortlessly, more comfortable than their thigh-high counterparts, and more versatile than ankle booties. Here are a few go-to outfits to try with kneehigh boots as we transition from fall to winter. The easiest way to wear a knee-high
is with a midi hemline, whether it’s an A-line skirt or an oversized sweater dress. You can top off this look with a knitted polo and denim jacket or a turtleneck and blazer. The reason why I like a longer skirt versus a mini or short dress is it gives the leg more coverage. Sometimes, that slice of skin peeking out between the edge of a skirt and the top of a boot just isn’t practical as the weather gets cooler. For a more casual look, tuck your favorite pair of pants into a knee-high boot and let the fabric pool around the
knees. You can pair this combo with a cozy knit and a light jacket on warmer days or a pea coat for chillier weather. Depending on the boot and pant, you could play with Bernadette contrasting styles Ulsamer and pair with a hooded sweatshirt and sporty windbreaker. This outfit combo is business on the bottom but fun on the top. Of course, not everyone appreciates a
slouchy look with pants scrunched into boots. You can still wear knee-highs with pants underneath wider-leg trousers. This is especially great with heeled boots where you may need some extra height depending on the pant hem. Style this look with a button-down and sweater thrown over the shoulder. Or wear boots with a standard pantsuit for a bit of edge and extra height. Not all suits are the same. Take, for instance, the skirt suit, which, when paired with knee-length stilettos, feels appropriate for the office but not too stuffy for a post-work happy hour. There are also short suits, which may not be everyone’s sartorial cut of tea, but

your denim with a chambray shirt or go for a simple tee and bomber-style jacket. Lastly, we have dresses. Even though I’m not a big fan of mini-skirts or short dresses for myself personally, it’s hard to deny how good a knee-high boot looks with a shorter hemline. To avoid showing more skin than you’re comfortable with, it’s best to pair minis with tights and looser tops. For dresses, you can layer with leggings tucked into boots for coverage. Whether or not knee-highs are on your radar this season. Hopefully, some of these styling tips will make you rethink this fall staple footwear as we head into winter.

if you have a coordinated suit of shorts and a jacket, a pair of knee-high boots extends the wear of that suit into the fall and winter. Trousers shorts on their own can also be worn with knee-length booties and look great with an oversized knit and tights. If suits and skirts aren’t really in your style wheelhouse, you may want to pair your knee-high boots with jeans. While most people tend to wear boots over skinny jeans, baggy jeans are more ontrend. This boot style works equally well when paired with wide-leg styles. The trick is to opt for a shorter cropped and/ or an interesting, cuffed jean to bring attention to the boot. Double down on

The World of Weird Words ver the last month or two, Webb’s Weird Words has taken a largely thematic approach, with columns on animals, etymology, alcohol and a little-known linguistic item called a doublet. So now, let’s get back to our eccentric English exploration: plain old-fashioned oddball words. Here are 12, with another dozen forth-
coming next week: Assegai (noun, ASS-uh-guy) – A sharp, light African spear; or the tree from whose wood these are made. Blepharospasm (noun, BLEF-uhroe-spaz-um) – Abnormal, usually involuntary action of the eyelid muscle, making it blink rapidly or close up tight. With various causes, it usually is benign and clears up on its own. According to Wikipedia, blepharospasm is to be distinguished from the similar myokymia and fasciculation; so there are two more

hile the actual Thanksgiving Day has just passed, that single day to many signals not just a day but a season of being thankful, sharing time with family and friends and celebrating all of the good things in our lives. Thanksgiving Day marks the beginning of the holiday season that runs through to Christmas and New Year’s Day. Christmas music is being played constantly on some radio stations, advertisements with Christmas in mind are popping up everywhere, and travel plans are being made to get together with loved ones. Giving Thanks: No, giving thanks is not something that should be reserved for just one day a year. It seems as though these days, there is an ever-increasing amount of difficulty, strife, and hardships that befall a growing number of people around us. You may have had personal hardships that have come your way recently – but no matter how dark the clouds are around us, there is always a silver lining! I know of a family that not too long ago lost a very popular and well-revered family member to an extremely emotional and tragic ending. While there were deep emotional feelings endured by the remainder of the family, in the end, dozens of family members were drawn more closely to each other and, to this day, remain stronger and closer because of the trag-

edy that occurred. Many Thanksgivings have passed since that loss, but, as a family, thanks are given each year since for the “silver lining” of the strength that was gained through that loss. Even outside family and close friends, we don’t have to look far to realize the many things we have that we can be thankful for. As outdoor enthusiasts, and particularly living here in Northcentral Pennsylvania, we can be particularly thankful for the bounties that this surrounding area provides us. Our nearby streams and rivers offer world-class destinations for fishing for trout, bass, walleyes, and Northern pike. Our hunting seasons allow us to pursue both small and big game in some surroundings that rival the most popular destinations throughout the entire United States. Hiking trails, biking trails, and kayak and canoeing waterways provide miles of travel opportunities and exercise in our great outdoors. In the crazy pace of today’s world and the ever-crazier things that happen all around us, take time to get outside and enjoy the wonders in Mother Nature’s world and take time to give thanks for the beauty that surrounds us. Don’t just do it on Thanksgiving Day or just throughout the holiday season, but do it often - as often as you can. Just in this past year, we’ve seen more than enough natural disasters, man-made conflicts, and other unnecessary examples of the cruelty we’re capable of inflicting on our own kind. Yet,

tions and shattered our previous record with 235,532 pounds of venison donated from 6,201 deer statewide! All of this has been possible thanks to a growing network of hunters who donate the venison, processors, and volunteer coordinators, as well as those who make financial contributions to the organization. How can you donate venison? If you are lucky enough to have taken a deer and supplied your freezer for the upcoming months, consider donating a future deer to the HSH program for use by the needy, many of whom do not or cannot hunt. To obtain more information about HSH and how to donate a deer or to locate nearby meat processors or area coordinators, go to www. we are thankful to have made it this far in a year that could accurately be best described as “challenging.” It has been “one of those years” – you know, the kind you’d probably like to forget but can’t! Be positive, be optimistic, and look for the silver lining – and take time to give thanks. Just Plain Giving: Since 1991, Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH), has been responsible for channeling about 2.3 million pounds of deer meat donated by Pennsylvania hunters to food banks, soup kitchens, and churches for distribution to those in need. These donations have provided more than 10 million servings of healthy, lean, and high-protein venison meals to those in need. Last year, Pennsylvania deer hunters broke previous records of donations, and our state led the nation in venison dona-

Of course, that means that we are sharing the same interest in the trout and bass in our local Susquehanna River and local trout streams. While fishing the regulated trout stretch on Muncy Creek a couple of years ago, I watched a mature Bald Eagle drop from his perch in an overhanging tree and grab a nice trout; that was one more than I had at that point. As many eagles as I have been fortunate to see, I’ll still have to admit that it’s still an exciting encounter. Keep your eyes open.

When an eagle pursues its prey, they rarely enter the water but rather grab the fish from near the surface with their talons. An Osprey will often enter the water to snatch up a fish, but it’s not unusual for an eagle to snatch the fish from the Osprey’s talons. Eagle numbers have been increasing across the state, and more and more nesting sites are showing up. I know of at least three nesting sites, all fairly close to Muncy, which explains the

to the sport and each other makes them very special kids to me. Sitting back and reflecting on how well they meshed and how excited they were for one another are things I will always remember about this team. That district championship match was an amazing match to watch. I really wish I had that on video. It was the best match we played all season. They never gave up on balls; getting things off the floor that I don’t think they ever anticipated doing is what you want to instill in your players, and they certainly gave me that. “Seeing the development from the beginning of the season to being able to win a district championship and competing in the state tournament was very rewarding for all of us!” With her team’s championship accomplishment, Spangler sees good things ahead for the sport she loves. “The growth of volleyball in our area seems to be going in the right direction. Williamsport and Loyalsock had programs. Now Hughesville, Lewisburg, and Danville have teams, and seeing how they have progressed is overall an exciting thing for the development of the sport locally. I’ve had a few young girls approach me in other communities, asking if I could help them with volleyball skills. That is fun to see because other than the past five or six years, the sport hasn’t been here.” Having experienced championship success, Spangler and her team hope to add to Rieppel’s golden collection in the years ahead.

“Volleyball is like the other sports; you must put the time and effort into developing your skills. A lot of my varsity girls have been very successful at other sports, and they have the commitment to their craft they are doing at that time. They are not just there to have a season. They are athletes through and through, whether it’s softball, basketball, or any of the other sports they play.” Like a new teacher entering a classroom, Spangler had hurdles to clear. “Getting them to understand that I knew what I was talking about and wanted things done my way was my biggest challenge. Once they began to see a little bit of success while trying things differently than they had been used to, they latched on to what we were doing. I think the fact that we were able to have some success against teams they hadn’t been able to do before helped them develop as volleyball players. “This group was good to work with as they were friends and very much teamoriented. It didn’t matter if they were varsity or JV girls; you could see that throughout the entire program. They all genuinely cared for each other, wanted to be there, and wanted to play the sport. From the beginning, from some people not knowing how to play to some of the varsity girls asking all the questions about the new things I was teaching them, they were receptive to soaking in this new knowledge. “The dedication these girls have shown

eadache disorders are the most prevalent neurological disorders, affecting more than 90% of all Americans. Most headaches are primary headaches, while a small percentage are secondary headaches, which are headaches resulting from some other issue, such as head trauma. As of 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 3% of all annual emergency department visits in the United States are due to complaints of headaches. While most headaches are not the result of a serious illness, they still can interfere with your overall quality of life. Types of Headaches Migraines are severe, disabling headaches that typically occur on one side of the head with throbbing or pulsating pain, that is rated moderate to severe. The pain can be worsened through regular activities and is accompanied either by light and sound sensitivity or nausea. These headaches typically last anywhere from four to 72 hours. Frequent migraines may be a sign of something more serious. If you experience migraines often, it’s important to speak with your physician to rule out underlying issues. Migraines can be treated with medication, lifestyle modification, and other therapies. Tension headaches produce more of a global pressure sensation and are commonly what
people refer to when experiencing a headache. These headaches are mild to moderate in severity and usually go away within four hours. This pain is more of a squeezing type of pain, like a band around the head. Most often, they do not have additional symptoms and are rarely a sign of more serious illness. Tension headaches can be treated with overthe-counter medications, and lifestyle modification can often help reduce their frequency. Cluster headaches typically occur multiple times per day over several days to weeks during a cluster period, usually followed by remission periods when the headaches stop. Cluster headaches are often described as a sudden, sharp, severe pain behind one eye and can be as severe as migraines. These headaches reach their peak in one to three minutes and generally last 15-90 minutes each. Cluster headaches are severe and not life-threatening. Understanding Headache Triggers Although headaches may indicate an underlying medical problem, more often lifestyle is the culprit. The effects of headaches can impact sleep, learning, social activities, and relationships. An initial tool for a headache-sufferer is a headache diary. In a headache diary, you record events before, during, and after each headache. This information helps you and your physician determine significant patterns and triggers and helps the physician create a personalized treatment plan. Treatment options range from natural remedies, lifestyle adjustments, and/or tailored medications.

headache pain, they should be taken with caution. Overuse or misuse of any pain medication can cause headaches to “rebound.” When a rebound headache wears off, the withdrawal reaction prompts additional medication. The headaches become more cyclical and more severe over time. Early intervention is key to preventing this vicious cycle. There are also certain vitamins that have been shown to help with headaches, which also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, free of processed and packaged foods. Anytime headaches or series of headaches interfere with the quality of your life, you should see your doctor. If you suddenly feel like you’re having the worst headache of your life, call 9-1-1 immediately. This could be a medical emergency. Education, awareness, and research are keys to conquering headaches.

Below are some common headache triggers and ways to reduce their effects: – Anxiety and stress – Take deep breaths, go on a walk, and incorporate healthy stress-relief activities into your daily routine. – Loud noise – Turn down the volume or walk away from sources of loud noise. – Light – Put down your screens or lower the brightness on devices and try not to overexpose yourself unprotected to sunlight. – Physical activity – Find a balance between pushing yourself too hard and being too sedentary. – Sleeping – Make sure you’re getting enough sleep and have a regular nighttime routine.
