appy New Year! Three easy words to say — let’s hope and pray they ring true for 2024. I wish everyone a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year. The year 2024. I have trouble wrapping my thoughts around that, even though I’ve been blessed to live my way there for over half a century. It just sounds like a futuristic novel or movie that would have been read or watched during my lifetime. Unfortunately, most of the subject topics in these movies or books were not good unless science fiction is your cup of tea. I’m sure you can think of a list involving war, pandemics, natural disasters, and alien life forms creating some type of havoc. The result is usually an apocalyptic ending. Now, here’s the really scary thing: in the last few years, we’ve witnessed some of those subject topics actually occur in the world we live in. Many stories viewed on the evening news would have made great Sci-Fi material back in the 70s, 80s, and even 90s. Just think about the Chinese spy balloons that basically navigated across our

EARN

country. If you remember, there were even reports of them being extraterrestrial. I still don’t think we have been told the true story about what was going on or what national security threats were breached. I will give you the disclaimer ahead of time: the following is not true and just a few thoughts of mine; I don’t want anybody hitting the social media button and reporting these as fact. If you took the Chinese spy balloon story, add in that it was shot down and fell into the hands of aliens, who, while recovering it, abducted a Bigfoot for biological study. When the Bigfoot was returned to Earth, it was infected with a pandemic-causing virus which, through contact in nature with bats and other creatures, was eventually spread to man and created a global pandemic. The pandemic created from the alien’s interaction with Bigfoot and creatures of Mother Nature then was blamed by the most powerful nations in the world an act of international espionage first involving China. This all led to an economic collapse of the world economy, which created a world war that extended out of our galaxy to the aliens that

were actually found to have been plotting our demise. The horrific outcome within the domino effect thriller actually has a happy ending. The nations around the world rally Jim together after Will Smith Webb Jr. — who joins the military after his cinematic career dies, finally finds a way to destroy the alien attack colonies’ space craft. This information is shared around the world by Morse Code, and Earth is saved for humanity. The aliens’ leader, who is actually Bernie Sanders, requests it be written into American history that the event helped create worldwide unity by destroying all the satellites and towers that provide cell phone service. Thus, eliminating the greatest source of communication that creates division. Pretty scary stuff, and doesn’t my fictional story fit those Hollywood movie scenarios like a glove? Which have become much more believable each evening when presented by David Muir. All I need now is a title for this. Wait, I got it: 2024. I guess I should seriously return to the future, which is actually the present. 2024 is going to be the most important

and interesting time in American history. I will begin sharing my thoughts in the near future. I am sure many of you wonder why President Biden didn’t have a part in my above-mentioned scifi script. Simple, there is just nothing I find humorous about the Biden administration. In closing things out for 2023, a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their generosity in filling the Red Kettle in the front of my office. I wish I could give a hug and shake everyone’s hand who helped carry on the work of Dave Sechler in the best way possible. Through your efforts, we, together, will help The Salvation Army Williamsport provide a helping hand in a variety of ways to so many local folks who need it. As I am penning this column, I am proud and humbled to say together, we have raised $16,173. Truly amazing! I also want to give a special shoutout of appreciation to a gentleman who made a very generous donation in the Kettle and then provided the office with a Bluetooth stereo and all the Christmas music needed to brighten up the office. Thank you for doubling up on your gifting, Sir. Let’s all be careful out there and get 2024 off to a good start. God Bless America.

Happy New Year! “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” — Neil Gaiman

ell, y’all, I did it. It came down to the wire, but I did manage to get everything done for Christmas before anyone got to my house for Christmas. It was close, — really, really close — but I got it done! So now, here I sit, just three days before the New Year, contemplating what my goals and resolutions for 2024 should be. After much consideration, I have once again compiled my list. Some of these are holdovers from last year, but let’s not talk about that. So, without further ado,

he Genetti Hotel will be rocking with the sounds of the Blues when the Cadillac Cats, a noted area Blues band in their own right, presents the Winter Blues Bash from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, January 12. The Cadillac Cats hope to make this an annual event each year in January to help keep the Blues alive for future generations and to showcase the amazing talent in the Williamsport area. The event will be held in the historic grand ballroom of the Genetti and will have an excellent menu for Blues-themed food along with a cash bar. The Billtown Blues Association will have a stand set up for people to buy merchandise and membership renewal/festival tickets for The Billtown Blues Festival. “The Cadillac Cats Winter Blues Bash is all about local talent. I hope that by bringing together some

amazing local artists and musicians, our community will realize the importance of American art like the Blues,” Blair Mitcheltree, a member of the Cadillac Cats, told Webb Weekly. The line-up for the Winter Blues Bash is: – Mini Mojo 7:00 -7:30 – Urie Kline Band 7:45- 8:15 – The Cadillac Cats 8:30- 10:00 The Cadillac Cats are recognized as one of the busiest and most professional blues bands active in the Williamsport area. Established in 2015 by local businessman and longtime musician Blair Mitcheltree, it counts among its members alumni of the Uptown Music Collective, instructors at local universities, and active members of the region’s rich musical scene. What unites each of these distinct individuals is a deep passion for “the Blues.” Year after year, the Cadillac Cats

Recently, we have continued to take exciting steps forward by filming professional music videos for our singles and incorporating them as a formal LLC. County Hall Corner: The Very Unique PA State Rep Jamie Flick By Larry Stout

N

o matter how much a person may have studied or prepared for a new job or occupation, the cold water of reality hits almost immediately. Sooner than later, many ask themselves, “Dear God, what have I got myself into?” In previous columns, I have noted my own awakening to serving in local govern-

ment. For this past year, my eye was particularly on the new Pennsylvania State Representative for the 83rd District, Jamie L. Flick. His district covers the city of Williamsport as well as a wide swath of townships and boroughs in both Lycoming and Union counties. This is a lot to handle. Yet, here was a man who was a business owner and who had no experience in government, suddenly engaging the wide, wild world of Pennsylvania state legisla-

ture as one of 203 members, each elected for two-year terms from single-member districts. What were Flick’s first twelve months in office like? How did he hold up?

First off, Jamie Flick was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth; he has had to work hard for everything he has achieved in his life. Born on a farm, he acquired a strong work ethic from his parents and also learned to hold his own — being the fourth of six boys in the family. He did not want to be milking cows all his life but was not sure what he could do. It was a teacher at Jersey Shore High School who recognized his potential and encouraged him to go to college, the first one in his family. In 1981, Flick graduated from Williamsport Area Community College (later to become Penn Tech) with an associate degree in software engineering. Through the years, he kept refining his skills and even-

tually founded his own company, Susquehanna Software, Inc., which became the #1 selling human services software provider in Pennsylvania. Along his road of life, Jamie Flick is also a father to six children and has also been very active in local volunteer organizations in the community, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, an advocate for foster children (CASA), the American Cancer Society, and a coach in South Williamsport for kids baseball, football, basketball, and soccer teams for the past twenty-five years. A man with this much life experience would not be intimidated by the new challenges he would face as a new PA State Representative. Still, he also had an extra benefit from the support he was given by a helpful mentor, Joe Hamm, PA State Representative for the 84th district. Hamm has been in office since November 2020, and even though they did not sit on the same committees, Flick gives high praise to Hamm for helping him navigate through the ins and outs of PA assembly practices and procedures. Flick certainly caught on; as in his freshman year, he co-sponsored 89 House General Bills, four House Joint Resolutions, and 31 House Simple Resolutions. Flick’s experience in business and volunteer activities taught him some very valuable interpersonal skills. It shows in his announcement in June 2023 when he

co-hosted a press conference to introduce the new Bipartisan “Meet Me in the Middle” Caucus. He was one of four members (two Republicans and two Democrats) who serve as co-chairs of the caucus. Flick stated that this new bipartisan caucus was designed to foster more cooperation between the parties, reduce polarization, and find paths to work together to pass commonsense legislation that benefits the people of Pennsylvania. Jamie Flick is a different drummer for a politician, that is for sure. He does not take any campaign money from PACs or lobbyists. He was only one of the 203 Pennsylvania State Representatives who refused to take a salary during the six months that the Assembly did not meet due to a budget dispute. He is also probably the only PA State Rep in history who is a part-owner of a professional baseball team in Australia. (The Sydney Blue Sox, for those who are wondering). But Flick’s uniqueness is his strength. He does not act like he is trying to impress anyone because, quite frankly, he does not need to. He just loves people and wants to help them. His work ethic, both in legislative sessions in Harrisburg and at events and activities in his district, clearly displays a man who has strong principles yet also deep empathy, especially for veterans. He might have come to the party a little late, but he also might be sticking around for a while.

blond, or beige highlights. Just be sure you’re prepared for more frequent trips to the salon to maintain your bold new color, and definitely bring in example pictures with the specific color treatments you’re hoping to recreate. Lastly, there is easy hair. What is easy hair, you may ask? Well, it means different things to different people. This could mean embracing your natural texture to allow for minimum maintenance. Or maybe just tweaking your current style with a trim instead of a new cut. Doing color at home to save time and money. Or getting an intentional low-maintenance cut to save time on blow-drying and styling. Or it could be getting it all buzzed off and sporting a knit cap for the rest of winter. It’s hard being an adult, and sometimes you just don’t have the time or wherewithal to worry about your hair. Embracing easy and hassle-free is definitely a 2024 trend, not only in hair but in life. But remember, hair is a marathon, not a sprint. You may want to cut it all off and start again but be prepared for that journey in hair and in life. Happy 2024!

just the bottom inch with a gradation in length? Establishing the shortest layer is extremely important and needs to be agreed upon before the scissors come out. Of course, some folks want to embrace short hair in 2024; hence, there’s the cropped pixie. This style is a contemporary take on the classic pixie cut, featuring textured layers and a slightly longer length on top. While this may seem like a modern cut, it actually dates back to the 1950s; think Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday.” For the 21st century, this cut embraces texture, making it flattering on various face shapes, not just the practically perfect symmetrical faces of classic Hollywood movie stars. Ask for a textured or cropped pixie cut with layers for added movement and dimensions. Definitely consider your face shape, hair density, and if you have enough turtlenecks to wear this winter to keep your neck warm. On the flip side of a classic cut is extreme hair that plays around with color and length. If you’re feeling a little rebellious, the new year is a great time to break from the norm and get crazy with color. Think vibrant red, shocking

pound called acetaldehyde, a byproduct of the metabolism of alcohol, which has been shown to cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, and flushed skin. A study published in the Journal of Medicine by Mackey et al. disputes acetaldehyde as a direct cause of hangover symptoms. However, these researchers believe that it does play an indirect role. Studies have also shown a correlation between alcohol consumption and cytokines, proteins that act as chemical signalers to the immune system. The body usually uses cytokines to trigger the body’s inflammatory response to infection, but alcohol has also been shown to activate them, which can cause hangover symptoms. In addition, some drinks have been shown to cause hangovers more often and of more severity than others. Ultimately, hangovers are caused by alcohol consumption. Therefore, hard liquor drinks such as whiskey and rum are more likely to cause symptoms than beer because they contain more alcohol by volume and can be consumed more quickly. In addition, some drinks have higher levels of trace chemicals called congeners that are produced during fermentation. Research has shown that darker-colored drinks, such as bourbon, cause more severe hangovers than their lighter-colored counterparts, such as

vodka. One such congener, methanol, is particularly nasty and can remain in a person’s system long after the alcohol is metabolized and may account for longer-lasting symptoms. So, what can you do if you are suffering from a hangover or, better yet, prevent one in the first place? According to drinking folklore, Americans favor a greasy meal such as eggs and bacon the following morning to alleviate symptoms. Some people believe that the hair of the dog and additional drinking is the best course of action. Or, if you are from Germany, your preferred cure is pickled herring. Romanians seem to like tripe soup; if you are from Mexico, you might have heard shrimp for breakfast. The truth is that none of these home remedies is likely to cure a hangover. By far, the best way to cure a hangover is to avoid one to begin with by drinking in moderation or not at all. Staying hydrated both during and after alcohol consumption is a good idea. If you do choose to drink, drink slowly and on a full stomach. Also, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) meds such as ibuprofen may alleviate headache pain but do NOT take acetaminophen as it can interact with alcohol and damage your liver. If you are unsure what, if anything, to take, consult with a medical professional.

ter-Christmas deals that I got a start on. I want to make a list of everyone to buy for and start getting things, like gift cards. Bus drivers, teachers, and small gifts I do for others. If I buy a gift card each month, then I wouldn’t have to worry about any of that come December! This year, I had to keep running out because I would forget smaller gifts like this, and it makes people’s day to do it for them. This is what Christmas is all about! Making Christmas cookies, freezing them in early November, making homemade gifts for people, and buying stamps for cards. Just little things like this that can be a huge help come December. I can’t imagine the feeling of having co-workers, bus drivers, teachers, and friends all done and wrapped before Thanksgiving or having all our stockings done and wrapped. This is my goal for 2024. Does it sound like a good idea to you? Something you would want to do? Well, you guys are going to hold me accountable, and if you want to join me, I’ll help make you accountable by checking in every so often on this! Come December 2024, you and I will

I can’t wait to feel myself again!) I’m so looking forward to feeling myself again. Of course, I want to organize a few things and try to read my Bible more, too, but a goal I set for myself is this. There are twelve months in a year. Most people start getting ready for Christmas around Thanksgiving, which is the end of November. So, if we do something for Christmas around the 25th of each month, that gives us ten days throughout the year to give us a boost on the upcoming holiday season. (One day each January through October.) Honestly, is ten days even that much? Will it help get you ahead? Well, I am about to find out. I made a promise to myself that I would get ahead of the game, and honestly, it excites me! I’m making a list of new ideas on my phone for Christmas 2024. Whether it be ideas for gifts, new decorations, new recipes, or ideas for one of my Christmas parties, I put it in my phone notebook. I have eight notes already, and Christmas 2023 just ended. I want to have things like stockings done and wrapped. I already have a few stocking stuffers bought from af-

be so glad we did! Let’s do it and see if it helps us be more prepared for this December. This Christmas was such a wonderful one. Extra special this year because of a surprise we got our kids that I promised I would share with you all after the holidays. We bought our kids each a dirt bike for Christmas, and they did not see it coming. We had all the grandparents over for Christmas dinner and wanted them and my brother and his family to be a part of the

surprise. We had the kids in the living room about 4 p.m. Christmas night, and my dad and stepdad rode them up from my dad’s house. When they heard the bikes, Ty started looking out the window. When he saw a YZ250F coming through our yard, he sat on the couch with big eyes and said, “There is no way!” Kenzy thought the other bike was for her dad. She had no idea it was hers!! I’ll post the video to my Instagram,

EXPERIENCE where I know many of you follow me, and you can see it. (andreascountryhomecooknfitness) It was such a special moment caught on video. It gives me so much joy watching Tyler teaching his sister how to ride. The story is so sweet about this, and I will share it later this month but watching my two kids this year will give me so much joy. It’s the best feeling, and now that

here were no excuses today from University of Miami gridmen for the 26-0 trampling they suffered at the hands of the Thundering Herd of Bucknell in the first

annual New Year’s Day Orange Bowl Game. One Miami player bruised and worn by the fight to stave off the undeniable thrusts of the Lewisburg, Pa. eleven, expressed the team’s sentiments when he said, “They outweighed and outclassed

were the sufferers. Approximately 5,000 watched the intersectional contest. The first touchdown came on a pass Jenkins, substitute halfback to Smith, fullback from the Miami 33-yard line. The final two Bucknell touchdowns came in quick succession in the final period. Bucknell’s last tally came about indirectly as the result of a Miami fumble at its own 10-yard line.

evelation 3:1-3, “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have

found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.” Duplicity is defined as deceitful, dishonest, or misleading. In Sardis, they had developed a public reputation that did not match their private reality. While they were able to hide their duplicity from human eyes, they could not hide it from the eyes and judgment

of the all-seeing and all-knowing God. Duplicity is hypocrisy. In Matthew 23:25-28, Jesus called it being white-washed tombs. He hammered the religious leaders — those who should have known better — for Tim their hypocrisy. MatHartzell thew 7:21-23, Depart from me, I never knew you, is a chilling declaration to the duplicitous. So is the judgment of Ananias and Sapphira. See Acts 5:1-11. Duplicity sometimes leads to scandal, but not always. We humans can be very successful at duplicitous living. This is why we cannot judge others — even if they are living exceptional Christian lives. We see only the outside; God alone sees the inside — the private world of the heart and mind. See II Samuel 16:7 and Hebrews 4:13. Of all the human failures; duplicity may be the greatest trouble we heap on ourselves. Back in 2021, the Christian world was rocked by the news that the late Ravi Zacharias, a world-renowned speaker and defender of the faith, had lived a double life. He died in 2020, just two months after announcing he had cancer. Over 48 years of ministry, Ravi had preached in 70 countries and written 30

books. He was greatly respected. After his death, it was discovered that Ravi had sexually abused women for many years. He had hundreds of inappropriate pictures of women, many of whom he knew personally and had abused and manipulated. On top of that, he had misappropriated funds intended for humanitarian purposes to pay for sex and to support the women he was abusing. Ravi’s double life clearly demonstrates our human ability to live two very different lives — one public and one private. His example is extreme, but friend, you and I have the same capacity. We each have a private inner world — one unseen by anyone else. If your private world does not match your public world, then you are living a duplicitous life. Here’s the good news: Jesus called us to overcome duplicity. If He called us to it, then it must be possible. Steps to Overcoming Duplicity First, clean the inside of the cup. Matthew 23:25-26. Live moment by moment in the disciplines of confession and surrender. Be honest with God, yourself, and others. Live with nothing to hide from others — and nothing to prove to others. Allow God’s transformational grace (Word, Prayer, Spirit, Body, Mission) to renew your heart and mind. 98 EAST SOUTH ST. LOGANTON, PA 17747 Located at the Old Sugar Valley High School Building. open and keep it there. Married or not, find someone to be your full accountability partner. You must take action to allow light to flood every nook and cranny of your life. If you don’t, things will take root in those dark cracks — and what grows in the dark is not good. Don’t lie to yourself, don’t make excuses, don’t self-justify, and don’t blame shift. If you’re keeping something in the dark, then confess to God by calling it what it is — duplicity and hypocrisy. Then, get it out into the light. Third, live a singular life. Live in the peaceful blessing of personal unity — a life where the inner world and the out-

er world are the same world. Doing so provides great peace. Maintaining two lives requires a terrible amount of work and detail. Mark Twain once quipped, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” Determine to be who you are, no matter where you are or who you are with. This is the singular life — a life of personal unity and honesty. It can be done. While Ravi is an example of duplicity, Billy Graham is an example of honesty. Billy understood the vulnerability of duplicity and took intentional steps to protect himself and his fellow leaders from this insidious failure. Google “The Modesto Mani-

festo,” and you can see just how Billy’s team protected themselves. You and I can do it too. It’s a new year. Why not start it by taking these steps? It won’t be easy, and there may be pain along the way, but the pain will be worth it — of this, you can be sure. Father, you see our weaknesses and failures. You have full access to our thoughts and attitudes. Nothing in all of creation is hidden from you. You understand our vulnerabilities, and you provide grace to empower us to overcome them. Help us to live in that grace — to tap into it every moment — so we can live the singular life of full and open honesty. Amen.

Second, walk in the light. Evil seeks darkness. See John 3:16-21. Live in the open. What are you hiding? Do you really think God doesn’t see these? You are only fooling yourself. You are destroying your potential and putting the people you claim to love and the mission of God at great risk. You are storing up God’s wrath against you. If you struggle with duplicity, then accept the fact that you can’t afford to maintain privacy. If you have a spouse, be open with them. Share your passwords to your devices. Invite them to use them regularly. Do not maintain secret bank accounts, cell phones, or online activity. Get your life out in the

practice. It is a contraction of gamma and ut, lowest and highest notes in Medieval Latin. And yes, that’s where we get our expression run the gamut (meaning to display or achieve the full range of something). Teagle (TEE-gull) – Now obsolete term, this refers to a hoist used for moving goods in a warehouse. Also: a verb for doing this. Teapoy (TEE-poy, noun) – A small table or “tea caddy” with a triangular base. Its origin is not in the word tea, but rather in a Sanskrit term meaning “three feet.” Teasel (TEE-zul, noun) – Alternately spelled teazel or teazle, this one is bit complicated — and a bit interesting, too: Teasel was originally a plant with yellow or purple flowers and prickly heads. In olden times, these burr-like tops were used in to “tease” — that is, to pull apart and separate — fibers like wool and flax. Once machines were invented to do that, they were also called teasles. And yes, this is related to our more common sense of “tease” — as in picking apart (i.e., pulling at, vexing, annoying) a fellow human being. So here’s to a 2024 with less teasing — and more tay!

Tayra (TAY-ruh, noun) – “A large arboreal musteline mammal of Central and South America, having a dark brown body and paler head.” Tazza (TAZZ-uh, noun) – “A wine cup with a shallow bowl and a circular foot.” Tchick (CHICK, noun) – Popping sound made by pressing your tongue against the hard palate (just behind your teeth) and then suddenly breaking the seal. Tchotchke (CHOTCH-kuh, noun) – A cheap souvenir, ornament or trinket. I actually used this in an earlier column, but don’t mind re-including it here; such a great word! Tchoukball (CHOOK-ball, noun) – Invented in Switzerland, tchoukball is an indoor team sport in which players attempt to bounce a ball off a small, springy, upright frame in such a way that opposing players cannot catch it. It was named onomatopoetically — for the sound the ball makes when striking the so-called “rebounder.” Te (TEE, noun) – Alternate spelling for ti, the seventh note of a standard gamut (as in, fa-so-la-ti-da). “Gamut,” incidentally, has several meanings, but it originally referred to a set of “do-remi”-type words designed for singing

what resolutions you can make this year and how to keep them all through 2024. Ideas for Resolutions Making resolutions, or goal setting, is like plotting a course on a map, providing direction, keeping you focused, and guiding your journey to success. When you set goals, you’re making a promise to yourself. It’s about remaining accountable and taking ownership of your actions.

Deadlines and milestones, therefore, remind you to stay focused and disciplined. By sticking to your plan and putting in the effort day in and day out, you develop habits that pave the way for your growth and success, whether it’s in your career or personal life. Resolutions are not only beneficial for your physical well-being, but also your mental well-being. track. Reward yourself – Be sure to recognize the progress that you’ve made and reward yourself for meeting milestones. With any goal, there are highs and lows. Staying positive is key. It’s OK if you’re not seeing the results that you want as quickly as you intended, or if you slip up here and there. It is not always a straight path to achievement, but it is so worth it once you get to where you are going. Keep your head up and there’s no doubt that 2024 will be your year. Taylor J. Rider, D.O., is a first-year resident with the UPMC Williamsport Family Medicine Residency at UPMC Williamsport. During training, residents complete a Lifestyle Medicine curriculum through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine with the goal of helping patients reverse chronic disease and achieve wellness through lifestyle changes, focusing on diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, socialization, and reducing unhealthy substance use. At the end of residency, they are licensed as Family Medicine physicians and eligible to become board-certified in Lifestyle Medicine. Stay focused – Many times people try to do too much at once. By setting only one or two goals, you prevent overload and allow yourself to focus more closely on the things you want to achieve. Stay within reach – When choosing your New Year’s resolution, be sure that your goal is achievable. If you set too high of a standard for yourself, you may become discouraged and are more likely to give up. Start small and once you achieve, up the ante. Make a plan – Think through exactly how and when you will reach your goal. Pick milestones and deadlines that you want to reach. Consider how you will fight temptation and stay positive. Adequate preparation and routine will help you keep your eye on the prize. Be specific – Quantify what you want to accomplish and how you will do it. If you want to lose weight, choose a goal weight to reach, set standards for how many times you will go to the gym or how many ‘cheat’ meals you can have per month. Putting value on these goals helps you to stay on track and manage your progress. Make it a group effort – There is power in numbers. Join up with friends and make it a group effort. You will help keep each other motivated and on

ou can’t control your parents. If you didn’t have that figured out when you were five years old, or sixteen, you surely know it now. You can’t tell them what to do. You can’t make them follow your directions. You can’t even give them advice. And as in the new book “A Very Inconvenient

Scandal” by Jacqueline Mitchard, they’d say the same thing about you. Frankie Attleboro wasn’t just angry. She was livid. She’d planned on telling her father, Mack, and her brother, Penn, the good news later. Her fiancé, Gil, should’ve been the first to know that Frankie was due to have a baby shortly after their fall wedding but somehow, her news got revealed, twisted, and lost in the midst of her father’s urgent text and his selfishness. Hurrying home to Cape Cod, Frankie feared the worst — and she found it: rushing to her father’s house, she found him in bed with her former best friend, Ariel

Puck, who was very pregnant. Never mind that Frankie’s mother had been dead barely a year. Never mind that Mack was old enough to be Ariel’s father. Never mind Frankie’s news, which was forgotten as Mack and Ariel made plans for their own wedding the following weekend. Frankie couldn’t get over her feelings of betrayal. Her mother had practically raised Ariel after Ariel’s mother abandoned her, and Frankie had supported her new mother-in-law for all of high school. All for this? She was angry, hurt, and yes, jealous. Despite that Frankie hated to see it, the wedding of the new Mr. and Mrs. Mack Attleboro went off without a hitch – almost. But then a surprise guest showed up at the reception and what was she doing there? Everyone gasped. Everyone gaped. Half the guests didn’t recognize her but indeed, in all her splendor stood Carlotta Puck, gone for a decade, presumed dead, but very much alive... Let’s start here: there’s a lot of meangirling going on in “A Very Inconvenient Scandal” and you may have to fight not to roll your eyes or ask the main characters — two young women, both mothers-to-be — if they would please just grow up. Meangirling leads to drama, the kind you sigh over, and when you think the whole kettle is full to the brim with it, author Jacqueline Mitchard tosses another person into the soup. Curiously, happily, this character makes all the difference in the world, in that she takes the focus off the tiresome adolescent

activity and inserts the kind of nastiness a reader can really sink her teeth into. The character is twisty and cunning but not entirely hate-able; in fact, you may adore her just because she’s so bad. That, plus Mitchard’s propensity toward multiple clever turns-of-phrase on each page turns an immature temper-tantrum story into a pretty good tale of villainy. If you’re not already a Mitchard fan, this probably isn’t the book to begin with. If you are, though, here’s what you’ve been waiting for. Grab “A Very inconvenient Scandal” and lose control of your time.

arty, party, party — it’s what most folks do on New Year’s Eve to say goodbye to the previous year. Hopefully, our heads have cleared up by now from the revelries of New Year’s Eve, and we can take time to focus on what lies ahead in the coming year. So, steep a pot of tea or brew a jug of coffee, and let’s sit down and contemplate what the year ahead may bring our way. Goal setting is important. I have often found that the best way to accomplish a goal is to think it through, write down your game plan, which should include a realistic timetable, and then review that plan from time to time to verify that progress is being made. Make a list of your goals, which should include a few short-term items as well as longer, more involved things that you must stretch to reach. Being able to cross off the short-term items once you have accomplished them will give you the encouragement to continue working on the long-term or

more involved goals. Time is one of our most precious assets. It is the one thing that “once it is gone, it is gone forever.” You can’t get it back. Thus, in setting your goals, you must define which goals you are setting are truly worth trading valuable time for in order to achieve them. Include in your list of goals a realistic time in which you can reach each goal and define the pay-back value of each goal — meaning, how your life will be made better by achieving each of the goals you finally decide upon. What are the obstacles you expect to encounter along the way? Once your list of goals is complete, lay out your plans to achieve each of the items. Are you being realistic? Are you biting off more than you can chew? If you are satisfied that all of the goals are doable, it is time to write down your plans on the calendar and start NOW. Start a daily diary. If you have one already, then, over the next month or so of chilling temperatures and falling snow, you can while away the time

excellent goal to include in your plans for the next 12 months. Whether you are a biker, a hiker, a hunter, or a fisherman, it is important to the continuation of your chosen sports to do your part in making sure these activities are around for generations to come. Consider joining a few of the conservation groups that support and promote your interests. Take time to introduce someone to your sport — whether it is a youth or even an adult who has never had the opportunities that you have had. Increasing interest and participation in your sports of choice will

help raise needed dollars and aid in awareness of issues when support is needed for proposed legislation. Habitat improvement is a win-win. Projects to develop food plots, plant mast-bearing trees or plants for cover, create brush piles, or clear logging roads and trails can be added to your list of goals. Whether it is on acreage that you own, at a hunting club you belong to, or at a farm or woodlot that you have permission to hunt, doing habitat improvement work provides great exercise, adds to wildlife food and cover sources, and can help ce-

ment a good relationship between yourself and a landowner. Over the next several weeks, spend time relaxing, reflecting, and rejuvenating. Focus on what really matters in your life and how you can improve upon that which you already have. Take time to set your goals for the new year, develop your plans to accomplish those goals, and then take action to reach them. The feeling of accomplishment you get as you check off the goals once you have achieved them will drive you on to complete the others as well.

Getting Into Fly-Tying

e are moving into that time of year when we outdoor types start spending less time outdoors pursuing game and fish and more time indoors. We still have some small game hunting and muzzleloading hunting left, and hopefully, if we get enough ice, we diehard fishermen can start hitting some local lakes as well. These winter days are also a good time for the fishing crowd to start reorganizing and assessing fishing gear, and if you are into fly-fishing, now is when a lot of flies get tied to replace those lost in the past season. That being said, it’s probably safe to say that when it comes to outdoor pursuits, those involved in fly-fishing are probably a fairly small number, but each year, I see more and more people getting into

fly-fishing. I know over the past couple of years, I have had the opportunity to take several men and women out onto a local stream to teach them the art of fly-fishing, and I look forward to more of those opportunities this Ken coming year. Hunter Of course, once you get bitten by the fly-fishing bug and you begin to master fishing techniques, you must begin building your fly collection. Certainly, you can add to your collection by purchasing the flies you are interested in, or you can go to the next step and begin tying your own flies. Here again, I am finding more and more people are getting interested in tying flies, and if you are going to get serious about fly-fishing, it’s probably a good idea to get into tying as well. Tying your own flies is a very satisfying activity and, in the long run, can save you a lot of

tools and materials are more specialized, and even most stores that offer fishing equipment don’t offer much in the way of fly-tying materials. However, we are fortunate to have an excellent location to find these specialized goods: Blue Heron Sports on Route 405 just south of Milton. Blue Heron is open Wednesday through Friday from 9 to 6 and Saturday from 9 to 4. You can find beginner fly-tying kits at Blue Heron for around $50; that will get you the tying vice and other tools needed to tie a variety of flies. Probably for around another $50, you can buy enough tying materials to get you started tying some nymphs and wet flies. Granted, when you get into tying floating dry flies, materials can get a bit more costly, but in the long run, you still come out way ahead by tying your own flies, and you get the satisfaction of catching trout on something you made yourself. If you need more information on Blue Heron Sports, you can call them at 570-742-3228.

money. I advise getting with somebody who ties their own flies, and most fly-tiers are more than happy to show a beginner the ropes. Just recently, a friend of mine told me his grandson played a major role in starting a fly-tying club at Hughesville school, and twenty-some kids are participating. I also found information that several beginner fly-tying classes, presented by the R.B. Winter Chapter of Trout Unlimited, will be offered at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewisburg. For more information on the classes, you can call Ted August at 570-274-0289 or Rod Jones at 570-259-7205. Of course, if you plan to get into tying your own flies, you have to have the right specialized equipment and the materials to work with for constructing a variety of fly types. I’ll admit that purchasing flies and fly-tying material is a little more involved than walking into a Wal-Mart and picking a couple of bass lures off the rack. Fly-tying

elcome to 2024! Ready or not, it is here. Hopefully, this past holiday week’s festivities went well, and Santa treated you kindly. Perhaps not if you are an MLB baseball fan of teams other than the Dodgers. Possibly, it can be put thusly: it’s the week after Christmas, and all through the town, if you don’t like the Dodgers, you’re wearing a frown!

OK, it won’t win any poetic awards, but it speaks volumes about the ‘hate level’ now being directed from fans of the other 29 MLB teams to the Tinseltown Nine wearing Dodger blue. If you haven’t been paying attention or just awakened from a Rip Van Winkle-type siesta, during the last few weeks of December, the Los Angeles Dodgers shelled out $1.25 BILLION U.S. dollars in signing two Japanese

Billy the Kid and Josey Wales had $5,000 bounties on their heads, Jesse James $25,000, and Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was targeted at $100,000. Following the 2017 season, the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal catapulted the team to the top of MLB’s most-hated status. The Yankees and the Red Sox are annually looked upon as teams many fans root against. But now, all three of those teams can thank the Lo$ Angele$ Dodger$, whom most of the baseball world will be cheering to fail. The craziness of the Ohtani saga even includes the number 17 he will wear on his back. While fans across the country were campaigning for Ohtani to sign with their team, Ashley Kelly, the wife of Dodger pitcher Joe Kelly, took it one step further by starting her “#Ohtake17” campaign, hoping it would catch Ohtani’s attention. The slogan refers to the number worn by Kelly with the team.

Ohtani’s contract was the largest in the American baseball Scott history, while Lowery Yamamoto, who pitched the past five seasons in Japan, received the largest contract to a player who had never played a game in MLB. Combined, the other 29 MLB teams have spent less than $900 million to date. That billion-dollar payout converts to 142,355,000,000 Japanese yen. During 2022 (the last time complete year figures were available) the United States imported $154.45 billion worth of goods from Japan. The top imported items included vehicles, machinery, boilers, electrical and electrical equipment. It doesn’t apply to states that have no income tax, like Texas, Tennessee, and Florida, where many professional athletes move. Ohtani will turn 40 in 2034 when the $68 million in his deferred contract payments will begin, an age when most baseball players have retired. By then, Ohtani could stop playing baseball and choose not to live in California, potentially avoiding paying the bulk of his salary to California’s 13.3 state income tax and 1.1% payroll tax. For their part, the Dodgers can invest $68 million over the next decade while not paying interest to Ohtani when the 2034 payments begin. The known details of Ohtani’s contract position him nicely within the confines of a federal law that specifically bans states from taxing the retirement income of former residents. While the Dodger’s recent financial maneuvering has drawn the ire of many in baseball circles and wanted posters have gone up seeking their demise, the apparent ability to stay one step ahead of the tax man must have opponents asking, “Why didn’t we think of that?’

45 • Webb Weekly January 3, 2024

Once he signed his new Dodger contract, Ohtani showed his gratitude for #17 by presenting Ashley Kelly with a brand-new Porsche! “I wasn’t going to give up the number to just anybody,” Joe Kelly told the media. “If Shohei keeps performing, he’ll be a future Hall of Famer, and I’ll be able to have my number retired. That’s the closest I’ll get to the Hall of Fame.” Reports indicate Ohtani is not only a great baseball player, but he could be an MVP of the personal finance world. Of the $700-million contract, Shohei will be paid $2 million a year for the next ten seasons as the result of having $680 million of the huge deal deferred. It will be the decade after when the Dodgers will really start to pay Ohtani — $68 million per year from 2034-43. Professional athletes’ taxes are much more complicated than the average taxpayer. In the United States, workers must pay taxes based both on where they live and where they work. For example, when, say, the New York Mets play the Dodgers in Los Angeles, Mets players can be taxed for the days they play in California. The taxing formula is known as the “jock tax.”

appy New Year to my family and friends. I would also like to give a shout to those who frequent this page. I look forward to many more tales. This part-time gig is grand, and we will cover many different topics in 2024. Let’s kick things off with one of my favorites. Dave Weigle of Hughesville serves as a mentor to 25 or so young lads. He is the faculty advisor to the HHS (Hughesville High School) Fly-Fishing Club. Several other schools in our area have something similar. But this group from Hughesville is turning some heads. Mr. Weigle helped create the club about a year ago. He organizes, gives ideas, and offers suggestions. The members go from there. “We have a fun group,” Weigle explained.” All are very interested in the different aspects of fly-fishing. We have hosted several speakers and organized a few outings involving the community. I am simply here to provide some guidance. But ultimately, I want the kids to decide what is best for the club. Fly-fishing is a fantastic sport. These youngsters are our future, and they will be the new protectors of our waterways.” Mr. Weigle put me in touch with some of the HHS Fly-fishing officers. Bryce Southeimer and Wes Harvey are both sophomores. Extremely polite and very well-spoken. I enjoyed our conversations. We talked about fishing, and I learned

more about their club. Both students were very excited about the future of their new organization. I explained to them that I also chucked bugs. One already followed me on Instagram. That made my day. Same age but very different. Bryce is rather quiet and more into motorsports. Wes was a talker, and he was so smooth. Harvey is a Spartan wrestler. All walks of life. Just another reason why I love this sport. “Many of us have been fishing since an early age,” Bryce stated. “We were introduced to fly-fishing, and our club provides a chance to learn so much more. My friends and I are having a blast.” “Mr. Weigle has been great,” Wes relayed. “He has set up several opportunities. The HHS Fly-Fishing Club gets together a few times each month. There are fly-tying presentations, and we get to meet many locals who are in the industry. This past Saturday, we all fished on the Muncy. It was rather cold,

but we all had a good time. We are growing.” The main goal of the HHS Fly-Fishing Club is to help students develop a love of fly-fishing while building a community that promotes curiosity, purpose, and giving back. One of the most effective means Jamie of introduction to the Spencer sport is through fly tying. HHS wants to create one of the finest fly-tying rooms of any high school in Pennsylvania. This is their latest fundraising push. A GO FUND ME page has been set. The overall response has been grand. Hav i ng quality vises, tools, and accessories is essential for tying flies. With these monies the HHS Fly-fishing hopes meet the needs of their growing club. Fly-fishing is a lifestyle and a process. There are endless possibilities of what this sport and ty-

ing can do for their kids. I just ponied up. You should, too. Please feel free to reach out. Bill Kosmer is a local fishing guide and photographer. He has been very active with the kids at HHS. Bill is a fly-fishing guru, and he is full of knowledge. My man has traveled all over the globe. Kosmer is a great resource, and he has enjoyed his interactions with the club. This is Bill’s photo from a few weeks back. “I am just doing what I can to give back,” Kosmer shared. “These kids are the future of our sport. They are the key to the future preservation of our waterways that we all love and enjoy. Great group, and I look forward to many more outings.” Several others have stepped to the plate. I would like to recognize Tony Gehman from TCO. Mr. Gehman has been a great help. He has also donated a lot on his own. TCO Fly Shops were terrific when it came to the equipment for this state-of-the-art room. They have already provided the HHS Fly-Fishing Club with some fantastic gear and supplies. Yes. Fishing is my passion, and it was beautiful to have a conversation with these two youngsters from Hughesville High. I will always go out of my way when I see the next generation. I also enjoyed catching up with Kosmer and a few others who share the same thoughts. Best wishes to the HHS Fly-fishing Club, and I look forward to attending your next meeting. Major props to Dave Weigle. Great work, my friend. Tight lines, kids. Cheers.
