he big news this past week from air service has been available, but a the Williamsport Regional commercial airline service is a must Airport was there would soon and an important selling point for the be commercial flights touching Chamber of Commerce to create new down in Montoursville. There have been opportunities. Southern Airways Express, which no commercial airlines going wheels up out of the airport since 2021. There has may not be as well-known as other been a lot of money, construction, and commercial airlines, was the first to effort put into the facility. Believe me, actually come to an agreement and shake I’ve heard all about it in the past week, hands with the Williamsport Regional as well as criticism about almost every Airport Authority. They will begin to aspect of the deal between Southern offer ten 9-passenger flights per week Airways and the Williamsport Regional beginning in May. The flights will take passengers from Williamsport Regional Airport Authority. First, let me clarify that the Williamsport to Washington’s Dulles International, Regional Airport is its own entity, not where they can continue with their next owned by the county. I think there’s a little leg of travel. So, this is where I hand you a pair of confusion because several individuals I spoke with believed the county-owned those heavy aviation earmuffs to block and controlled the facility. The airport is out all the negative noise you may have managed by the Williamsport Regional heard. I am going to apply the “every Airport Authority, of which Mr. Frank journey begins with the first step” Pellegrino is the chairman, and Mr. philosophy, or maybe, in this case, first Richard Howell is the executive director. flight. Let’s give this an opportunity to Our elected county, state, and federal representatives work with the authority succeed before creating negativity and to obtain funding when available to judgment. And for the good of our make the airport the best and safest community, let’s hope it’s a beginning. I can guarantee you that if this is facility it can be. Obviously, for business, industry, successful, more flights, landing points, Branding ad - Webb Weekly HalfPg_Layout 1 1/3/24 2:11 PM Page 1 and tourism, an airport is a necessity and larger planes will soon follow. Thank you to Southern Airways in the Williamsport area. Private
and Chief Commercial Officer Mark Cestari for making this happen. With the current economic conditions around our Nation, they are willing to invest time, pilots, and aircraft to Williamsport Jim Regional Airport. Yes, I Webb Jr. know potential earning is always the driving factor, but in this case, they’ve bellied up to the runway to provide this opportunity. I believe Richard Howell and Frank Pellegrino also deserve a tip of the Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on the side. As I followed this situation from afar, it became obvious the pressure was mounting to make something happen, and they did just that. Two other factors that are a definite positive that often get overlooked are the benefit to the Pennsylvania College of Technology and Avco/Lycoming Engines for the workforce development and educational opportunities this provides. I’m a big believer in made, taught, and maintained in America, especially when America is the greater Williamsport area. The second is this continues the providing of TSA service at the Williamsport Regional Airport. Which, from the way I understand it, this service is very difficult to have reinstated if lost.
Which is like many things in today’s government-funded economic world, if it moves somewhere else or the funding is lost, it’s always tougher to get it back. I will have more on the takeoff at IPT as we get closer to May. I have always liked going down to the airport and checking things out. Please remember this is a progress at work. You’re more than welcome to reach out to me with your thoughts on any of my columns; my contact info is always on page 4. I do have a question that I’m looking for an answer to, and it involves gasoline, not aviation fuel. The only thing I ask regarding this is it’s a hard fact, not hearsay, if you reach out to me. This may require someone who works directly in the petroleum industry. Why, if I drive over the mountain, does gas become cheaper, beginning with 3.09 at Snappy’s and 2.99 at Weaver’s in Allenwood? As you go down the road a little farther to Lewisburg, i-Fuel has it at 2.91, and Sheetz sits at 2.94. These prices are obviously at press time on Friday, and I just paid 3.37 at 7-Eleven up the street from my office. If you have hard facts, please let me know. Let’s all be safe out there, and if you’re heading down that way, save a few bucks on filling your tank. God Bless America.

Beating the Winter Blues
I
Founder James Webb Sr. 1944-2012
t’s official. We are at a pretty dreary time of year. The weather ain’t great. I’m fairly sure it rained for 27 hours straight last week. It’s cold, it’s dark, the post-holiday blues are rearing their ugly heads. I know the last thing you probably want to do is go outside. But the best way to wash away those winter blues is to find something to do! Board and video games, puzzles, cooking, and other at-home activities are great, but sometimes you just need to get out of the house and shake off the dust! If I’ve said it once in the last almost 21 years, I’ve said it eleventy-billion times. If you say there isn’t anything to do in our area, you aren’t even trying. Even in the cold, wet, dreary days of January, there is still plenty of fun to be had in our area. So, let’s get to it! Let’s start with last week’s cover story. January 17th brings the Harlem Wizards back to the Magic Dome at Williamsport High School! This great family-friendly event will benefit the Williamsport Area School District’s Education Foundation. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m., and you can find links to tickets on the WASD Facebook page. Next Saturday, January 27th, will be the Uptown Music Collective’s annual fundraising show. This year, it will be “Decade of Grunge,” so if you were a ’90s

A Few Good Men takes a biting look into the modern power play of authority, sexism, politics, law, the military, and morality. Two Marines stand trial for their participation in the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay sizzles on stage. The Navy defense attorney, a callow young man more interested in softball
games than the case, expects a plea bargain and a cover-up of what really happened. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, the lawyer eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in so doing, puts the military mentality and the Marine code of honor on trial. A Few Good Men delivers on every dramatic level and leaves the audience wondering if it can “handle the truth.” The show runs February 2nd-4th and 8th-11th, and tickets are available at ctlshows.com. So, at this point, I’ve given you almost 2,000 words worth of stuff to do. And I haven’t even touched all the local music to be found all across the area. I would have included those, but I can only take up so much space in the paper, and no one wants to read me droning on for what would probably be another 2,000 words! This also doesn’t include all the hunting, fishing (though I don’t think it’s been cold enough for ice fishing yet!), hiking, and other outdoor opportunities our area provides. Ski Sawmill, the Sunbury Ice Skating rink, all the skiing and tubing in the Poconos. There is plenty of outdoor fun to be had if that’s your jam. So, as the days start to get a little longer but also a little colder, bundle up and head out and find some fun to shake off that Seasonal Depression and beat back the winter blues!

wo hundred City Hall lodgers, the high number reached in the month of December, will likely be duplicated by the record of the present month. Each night finds upwards of a dozen or even more lodgers seeking shelter for the night at police headquarters. And the police, for obvious reasons, do not turn them away. The City Hall’s accommodations for lodgers are not of the palatial sort, but such as they are, many a weary wayfarer accepts gratefully, the warmth and shelter, not asking for a bed of down, or in fact, caring for frills of any sort. While the police as stated, do not turn away those seeking lodging, the

second or third visit from the same fellow without a good reason for reappearing is not welcome. A rule of “keep moving” is enforced. The make-up of the numerous parties of lodgers to be found almost every night is hard to classify. Many of them are workmen going from place to place in search of employment, others are the usual run of rovers who have no other home. Some, despite their wandering existence, manage to maintain an appearance of cleanliness and respectability, others make a decidedly sorry appearance. Frequently the room into which the lodgers is turned is near the boiler room, a good-sized room practically unfurnished, in which the men are sprawled in more or less comfortable positions.

check out Fruit of the Loom’s Waffle Unionsuit, which is made from the same material as their traditional long underwear. So, you can wear it on its own at home or use it as a base layer under snow clothes if you are forced outside. Another fitted option is the Chill Evening Pajama set from Free People. This 2-piece set features a soft, solidcolored cotton long-sleeve shirt with coordinated plaid or striped boxer-inspired joggers. It comes in navy, grey, or red color combos and pairs easily with your favorite oversized cardigan for double the snuggly feels. It’s also far from the most embarrassing thing you can wear when you answer the door for deliveries. If you’re more in the market for chic and sleek PJs as opposed to warm and fuzzy pajamas, then check out Target’s Beautifully Soft Top and Pants Pajama set from their Stars Above brand. The piping along the collar, cuff, pockets, and pant hem lends an air of elegance to this traditional pajama set. It comes in classic colors like rose pink, navy,
black, and heathered grey. This would be the pair to pack for any wintertime getaways this season. If flannel or fleece are not up your loungewear alley, there’s J.Crew’s Long-sleeved Cropped Pajama set in cotton poplin. This comes in green or red stripes or a green and white heart print. The cropped part is a shorter and wider set button top with a fulllength bottom. This is definitely a pair you may want to hold off on wearing until the weather turns, as it feels very fresh and crisp, perfect for the coming spring. Lastly, there are the classic standbys from Lanz of Salzburg with their vintage-inspired and traditional print PJs. These sets have a very homey feel, perfect for sleeping in and cuddling up. I’m having trouble deciding between the red Tyrolean flannel pajamas or the navy heart striped PJs as my favorite from this brand. So, as the elements force us all inside, queue up your streaming shows, pour some hot cocoa for the kids, and get extra comfy in a pair of PJs as you hunker down and get cozy.

County Hall Corner: On Your Mark…Get Set… By Larry Stout

es, yes, I know it is a long time out, but believe me, it will be here before we know it. I am speaking about the upcoming Primary Election on April 23rd and the General Election on November 5th. Many political prognosticators, who are wiser than I am, believe this might be one of the most important election years in decades. Throughout this year, I want to sprinkle some thoughts about who will be on the ballot and why we should care. In that vein, there are three particular races that we should begin to focus on. The race for Pennsylvania Attorney General is open as the current PA AG is Michelle A. Henry, who was appointed to the position in March of last year by Governor Josh Shapiro and has chosen not to run. The Democrats have five people running for the office, and the Republicans have three. Eugene DePasquale is the most recognized among the Dems, a former two-term Pennsylvania Auditor General. However, he lost in an election for the PA House in 2020 to Scott Perry and thus seems vulnerable. The other four, Joe Khan, Keir Bradford-Grey, Jared Solomon, and Jack Stollsteimer, are all from the Philadelphia area, and all seem
to be focused on abortion rights. If this is truly the prime focus for Democrats, my money would be on Keir BradfordGrey as she is the only female in the field and also would become the first Black attorney general in Pennsylvania. The Republican side of the slate features York County District Attorney Dave Sunday, Pennsylvania State Representative (Delaware/Chester) Craig Williams, and Former Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun “Kat” Copeland. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Kat Copeland in September of last year and was quite impressed. She was born to an Iranian mother and an American father and lived in Iran when the revolution took place in 1979. As a teenager at the time, she showed a backbone even then by standing

up to the Muslim radicals who tried to intimidate her for being an American. Copeland continued to show that grit as a prosecutor for 30 years and served as the Chief of the Criminal Division in the United States Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Dave Sunday and Craig Williams seem solid by their bios, but I believe they will have themselves a real challenger with this lady. She fights for the right. The race for US Senator will be the incumbent Democrat Bob Casey Jr., seeking a fourth term, already Pennsylvania’s longest-ever serving Democrat in the Senate. The Republicans will undoubtedly choose David McCormick, who lost to Mehmet Oz in the Republican primary in 2022 by fewer than 1000 votes for the Senate seat previously held by Pat Toomey. I heard Oz twice in person, and my wife had a ten-to-twelve-minute one-on-one with him at one of those gatherings (I enjoyed listening), and I thought he would make a good senator. Yet even my wife and I still had some doubts, and we must not have been the only ones given the outcome of the race. The Republicans have been going through buyer’s remorse ever since, and it would seem McCormick will benefit from it. Yet, it is difficult to make a call one way or the other as McCormick has a strong base and campaigns well, but the

challenge of Dr. Oz was not handled as well as it could have been. He better have a better team this time. Senator Casey has only incumbency to base his race on, but to be honest, he does not have any signature legislation that he can point to. This race is really hard to figure out and might come down to the measure of desire for change in the political climate. And, of course, the one race everyone is watching will be for the US presidency between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. There is general agreement among the pollsters that the three key toss-up states are Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. And of these three, Pennsylvania is considered the most important in terms of electoral college votes as well as the closeness of the race itself. The most recent polls in our state almost have Biden and Trump running neck and neck. Given that, it probably means we should expect to see a lot of both presidential candidates in the coming months, and who knows, they may even find their way to Lycoming County. Yet, a lot may change between now and the November election. President Biden’s health may become a factor, and he may step down. Donald Trump’s legal challenges may actually work and knock him out of the race. Who would replace them? Good question, and it won’t be the last question we will be asking as the 2024 political campaigns unfold.

I hadn’t used my Weis only needed a few things when I went to the store card yet, which had brought my bill down to $43, but I before the snowstorm was still speechless at the few two weeks ago. I went to items I had coming up to that Aldi’s to get most everything price. Two breakfast items: I needed that afternoon. I needed Velveeta cheese and Velveeta cheese, bakery Italian bread, Weis brand Monterey fresh Italian bread, which they Jack cheese, creamer, a gallon don’t carry. So, my husband Andrea of milk, and a bag of whole dropped me off on the way McElroy grain Tostitos nachos. I had home after dinner with friends that evening to Weis. Of course, I got spent $35 at Aldi’s that same day and a few more things than I needed, but seriously got twice as much. I still can’t I figured it would still be under thirty get over that Tostito, and most bags of chips are $5. Another item that always bucks. As my stuff rang up, it was $45. I shocks me is grapes! How can a bag thought, “Holy crap. Seriously?” First of grapes be $8-$12? Typically, I get off, I’m a Wegmans girl. Another tip is to keep count in your head as you are shopping. I normally round up to the highest number. So, if it’s $3.69, I say it’s $4. It’s a great way to keep track of your shopping if you are going in on a whim! Coupons and apps can help save money, too, along with searching for deals at places you are shopping. Everything doesn’t need to be a name brand, either. There are things I’m picky about, like Hellman’s mayo, Cabot cheese, Tostitos, and others, but there are other things I’ll get store brand, and it’s good! Like Aldi’s protein Greek yogurt, knock-off Nature Valley bars, sour cream, shredded mozzarella, butter, and others. Wegmans peanut butter, ice cream, hummus, and so many others are on my list there too! The Wegmans family pack of chicken is the way to go for savings. A pack gives us two to three meals for around $12-$15. The best part is you can clean the breast as soon as you get home. Have freezer bags ready and prepare three meals in about fifteen minutes. Meal #1: Chicken Fajita Cut two chicken breasts into chunks and place them into a freezer bag.

as you see, it’s about $80-$100 Here are a few tips to help save on groceries: I keep a list on my phone of what I need each week. I used to write it on a notepad on our fridge, but then I would forget the darn thing. So, I got smart and put it on a notepad on my phone. With columns like produce, dairy, baking, paper products, meats, and others. It helps me keep organized as I am shopping. It also helps me to not overspend. I usually keep it right around our grocery budget. Another tip is to figure out meals for the week. This helps you not to overspend as you have each item/ ingredient accounted for. Now, I am not saying I don’t buy anything that is not on my list. I’m human. I love food and love grocery shopping, but if I bought everything that looked good and that I wanted, my bill would be $500! Making a grocery list for the week not only sets you up to stay within budget but also helps you make your week easier by having your menu ready. Meals don’t have to be crazy every night. You know your budget, and you work with it.

Sprinkle chicken seasoning from Dollar General ($1) and mix it well until the chicken is covered. Freeze. Then, all you will need is soft shells and sharp cheese to throw this meal all together. Cheese & Shells approx. ($10) Meal #2: Garlic Herb & Wine Chicken & Green Beans Three chicken breasts — cleaned and trimmed. Place into a freezer bag. One packet of McCormick Garlic Herb & Wine seasoning, prepared and
poured on chicken before freezing. Then, all you need is a fresh bag of green beans. (approx. $5) Place chicken and green beans on a baking sheet and bake at 325° for 45-60 minutes. Stir green beans in the juice during the baking process. Meal #3: Chicken & Stuffing Two to four chicken breasts (these all depend on the size of your family) cleaned, cut, and seasoned to your liking. Place into a freezer bag.
EXPERIENCE A SHOPPING ADVENTURE THIS WINTER
Then all you will need is a box of Stove Top stuffing, sour cream, and cream of chicken soup. Approx ($10) All of these recipes are on my website at Andreascountryhomecookin.com for full directions and recipes. There are three recipes to feed your family for less than $40 with one family pack of chicken. I’ll continue next week with more delicious recipes for a lower cost and more grocery talk! Here is another chicken recipe to choose from. So simple and absolutely delicious! Crockpot Chicken & Biscuits (An oldie but goodie in case you missed it!) Ingredients: • 4 boneless chicken breast (seasoned to your liking) • Chicken broth • 1 can of cream of chicken • 1 bag of frozen mixed veggies • Few dollops of sour cream • 1 can of Pillsbury buttery biscuits Directions: Pour chicken broth just to cover the bottom of the crockpot. In a crockpot, place seasoned chicken on the bottom of the crockpot. Place the cream of chicken on top
of the chicken, then pour the bag of veggies in. Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6 hours. Take the chicken out and shred just before you are ready to eat. Add a few dollops of sour cream (Optional of course!) Mix well and serve over warm baked biscuits! My family absolutely loves this. It tasted extra good on a snowy night.

Lycoming County Girl Scout Earns Prestigious Gold Award For Addressing Caregiver Support at Public Libraries
Call 570-326-9322
G
irl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania is honored to announce that Sarah Marie Kline from Lycoming County has earned the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award, for the 2024 Gold Award class. Kline is a graduate of Montoursville Area High School. She attends Pennsylvania
College of Technology, majoring in Baking and Pastry Arts and Applied Management. Kline’s project, “Caregiver Work Stations at Public Libraries,” focused on addressing support for parents of young children who use library computers for job searching or other tasks. Kline created a safe space for infants and toddlers to play while
their caregiver uses the public computer for their needs. She addressed the lack of childcare parents often face while they need to complete essential paperwork or other computer projects. Her project’s mission will continue through the permanent placement of a desk with an attached play space for children. Kline devoted a minimum of 80 hours to problem-solving, planning, and implementing her ideas for change. She partnered with the Penn College Women in Construction Club and Makerspace to design and build the workstation. The impact of her Gold Award project will be felt long into the future, and Kline has shown the next generation of girls what they are capable of accomplishing. The Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, available to girls in high school who create sustainable change for a community or world issue. Gold Award Girl Scouts address pressing issues in their communities and create sustainable change
to make the world a better place. The Gold Award process enables girls to help their communities and provides tangible benefits as they grow as individuals. By going Gold, girls build professional skills, earn scholarships, and build their networks. About Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Through programs from coast to coast, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges — whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for a cause that motivates them, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alumnae, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them. difference in every place and in every moment of every day. Doing these little things well, again and again, over the course of a lifetime, results in accomplishments beyond our wildest imaginations. Heaven alone will reveal the accumulated magnitude of a life of faithfulness in the little things. It is an amazing treasure stored in heaven. See Matthew 6:19-21. Friends, we humans are prone to failure, but we don’t have to fail. God has redeemed us, and the work He has accomplished in our hearts gives us the strength and confidence to overcome. So take heart! You are the redeemed and the overcomer. Live with confidence and courage! You are making a difference!

God isn’t asking you to overcome world hunger or to overcome world wars. God is asking you to do with excellence the little things He has placed in front of you today—to the best of your ability and to His honor and glory. See Colossians 3. Working-Class Heroes: George Clooney’s “Boys in the Boat”
I
t’s fitting that George Clooney’s crowd-pleasing Boys in the Boat focuses on rich and privileged knowit-alls being bested by working-class heroes at the 1936 Olympics. Fitting, I say, because privileged knowit-alls — i.e., American critics and the left-leaning Hollywood establishment — already do not care for this film; I’m sure it won’t see a single Academy Award nomination. Indeed, at Rotten Tomatoes, Boys currently holds a dismal 57% approval
rating with national critics. But its score with regular old (i.e. working-class) viewers? Ninety-six. You can count me among the latter group, of course. But I do agree that Boys in the Boat is by no means a masterpiece — nor is it the sort of edgy, issue-driven tale that Oscar loves to celebrate these days. In fact, the principal word that kept coming to mind as I enjoyed the movie was: old-fashioned. It has no sex, no violence and very little

swearing. The plot arc, in which an impoverished, ragtag team of juniorvarsity rowers eclipses several Ivy League crews to reach the Berlin Olympics — is very predictable. (I should point out, however, that this true story hews pretty close to the facts Joseph W. as recounted in Daniel Smith III James Brown’s 2013 bestseller.) There is not much nuance in the characters — or in the plot or the themes. Yet the movie works. It works exceptionally well, in fact. Though the cast is largely unknown, first-rate acting really helps flesh out characters who are not particularly threedimensional. Joel Edgerton, the only real name-actor in the film, is engaging as the crew’s coach. The handsome Callum Turner, looking for all the world like the next Channing Tatum, is excellent as reallife protagonist Joe Rantz, who must push past personal demons to prevail. Viewers will also like Jake Mulhern as the muscular but taciturn rower Don Hume. Both his own personal battle in Berlin and the aforementioned struggles by Rantz really did happen — though as far as I can tell, the team’s mishap at the outset of their Olympic race was invented for the film. (I haven’t read the book.) Alexandre Desplat’s score is sensational,
and the movie also boasts superb cinematography; I especially relished a couple of shots that beautifully evoke Depression-era painters Edward Hopper and Maxfield Parrish. Along the same lines, the period detail is also solid, with seamless computer graphics to fill out some of the background visuals. I did have two quibbles in this area: Scenes supposedly set in Poughkeepsie don’t look much like the Hudson Valley, where riverside cliffs are much, much higher. Worse yet, the train scene really drops the ball by somehow using a British locomotive, rather than the Americanbuilt Alcos and Baldwins employed by the once-mighty Great Northern Railway. Happily, these minor points don’t detract from the film’s many merits — the greatest of which is its editing: The three racing scenes are just the right length and pace, carefully cycling through multiple closeups and overhead shots for truly thrilling footage of a sport that might not at first seem terribly cinematic. Under the able hand of Clooney (who directed but does not star), these scenes alone are worth the admission price; you can’t help but root for the hard-scrabble heroes as they race against odds that are all stacked against them. Here and throughout, with its traditional feel and underdog triumph, The Boys in the Boat is never subtle; indeed, it kinda wears its heart on its sleeve. Fortunately, that’s a pretty big heart.

the deconstruction of the film and the lesson the authors found, followed by ways that you can use the movie to become a better person. That’s it. No, seriously. No, seriously: readers who are willing to stop rolling their eyes and take a step back may be surprised. Or you may think this is quite a reach. Or maybe you now have a reason to binge-watch horror movies this winter... This is a fun book with a real streak of meaningfulness, and it could change the way you watch movies. You might find “Necessary Death” to be a necessary read, or you might think it’s a scream.

feelings? No, you likely screamed and then laughed about it, but Grosso and Fassel say that we can learn a lot when we seek the humanity inside the monster on the screen. Take, for instance, Freddy Krueger: you may not notice it at first, but the Nightmare franchise subtly shows viewers selfreliance and strength. Then there’s Leatherface, who’s actually a character that demands sympathy and “lovingkindness,” say the authors. Pennywise in It shows that we are stronger when we collaborate and find our “tribe.” Bruce the Shark in Jaws teaches moviegoers to accept that some things can’t be overcome; to find the patience needed for such acceptance, the authors offer help through “SMART Goals.” Predator shows viewers that “setting healthy boundaries” is hard but “worth it.” Carrie White in Carrie teaches horror film lovers to feel shame and to deal with the feelings that accompany it. And the movie Hellraiser asks something very surprising: “... can
we just stop a moment, take a deep breath, and be grateful for the good things in our lives?” And there you sit, holding this review in your hands, wondering what fun is all this? Go for a most excellent scare, get a lesson in psychology? Nah. Maybe not on your first viewing of a horror flick, but “Necessary Death” makes that fifth or ninth or thirteenth viewing of your favorite movie a little more interesting. No doubt, authors Chris Grosso and Preston Fassel don’t write about slasher movies in any sort of conventional way. There’s a synopsis of any given movie in each chapter here, which begins

Weird Words No. 31: A Little “Zhuzh” for Your Week By Joseph W. Smith III
A
s I work on the weekly “World of Weird Words,” it’s always tough to sort through the 2300 terms on my oddball vocab list, figuring out which ones to offer this time. Last week marked our 30th installment, so I decided to factor that figure: two sets of 15, both restricted solely to fiveand six-letter words.
So here’s our second set of 15 — almost all nouns, with pronunciation where necessary. Kloof – South African word for a deep glen or ravine; related to the English cleave (meaning split). Kopje (KOP-ee) – From Afrikaans and Dutch, it is a small, usually isolated hill. Related to the German word kopf (as in dummkopf, or dumbhead) — but not to the common Latin base cap, which
likewise means head. The original word can also be spelled koppie. Jojoba (ho-HO-buh) – A shrub of Mexico and the American Southwest. Jojoba oil (from its seeds) is used for cosmetics and lubricants. Micht (verb) – Scots form of might. (While we’re at it: Scots for may is mought.) This makes an excuse to point out that the silent “gh” in so many English words (tight, ought, etc.) was often pronounced in olden times; hence the original carol “Stille Nacht” has a hard “ch” in its German word for night. This is why English terms like rectangle
and erect come from the same Latin base as right — and why, for instance, straight sounds like its relative strict, when you pronounce the “gh.” The hard G and C sounds are, incidentally, both made exactly the same way in your mouth — but the latter is simply unvoiced. There’s a lot more along these lines, but I’ll shut up now, in case I am doing what the next word says…. Pother (verb) – Old-fashioned synonym for bother, though this is more often a noun for uproar, commotion or heated debate (as in, “a lot of pother”). At the risk of overstepping, I’ll also

swivet!” Thill – Like many of these weird words, thill looks for all the world like a typo. It is actually an old-fashioned term for the shafts to which a draft animal is harnessed when pulling a cart or other vehicle. A horse so employed is a thiller. Yonks – Informal slang for a very long time: “We haven’t seen him for yonks.” Origin unknown. Zeugma (ZOOG-muh) – From Merriam-Webster: “the use of a word to modify or govern two or more words usually in such a manner that it applies to each in a different sense or makes sense with only one.” Dictionary.com has a good example: “On his fishing trip, he caught three trout and a cold.” Similar to the equally obscure syllepsis. Zhuzh (pronounced with the same consonant sound as the middle of measure — and the oo in book) – Apparently just as tough to define as it is to say, zhuzh seems to mean an appealing or lively addition that makes things just right (“I gave my hair a little zhuzh”). Also, a verb for doing this. So hopefully, rather than a swivet or too much pother, these micht give a little zhuzh to your week! More soon.

point out that the B and P sounds — like G and G above — are exactly the same, but again, the latter is unvoiced. Same goes for V/F, Z/S, D/T and J/”tch.” Pulque (POOL-kee) – From Dictionary.com: “A fermented milky drink made from the juice of certain species of agave in Mexico.” Quokka (KWOK-uh) – Small wallaby found in the swamps of southwestern Australia. (For those still confused: a wallaby is sort of a miniature kangaroo; some are no bigger than rabbits!) Rebozo (ruh-BO-so or -zo) – In Spain or Mexico, a long woven scarf worn by women over the head and shoulders; in those countries, it is pronounced ruhBAW-thaw (or -saw). Shuln (SHOOLN, with the oo as in good; or as in boot) – A Yiddish word for synagogue, it is the plural of shul. Related to the German for school. Snood – Scottish headband for unmarried women. More recently, a headband for hair, especially one at the back that forms a pouchlike net or hat. Snood also can refer to the fleshy appendage on a turkey’s bill. (Ladies, sorry for the image this calls up regarding your hairnet!) Swivet – A state of anxiety, confusion or agitation: “Don’t get yourself in a

his week, the Williamsport Crosscutters will be hosting their annual Hot Stove League Banquet at the Genetti, which features former 1979 standout relief pitcher Kent Tukulve and Muncy’s own Ed Ott, a catcher on that team, as well as ESPN commentator Tim Kurkijan. The “Hot Stove League” is a timehonored baseball term that means baseball fans gather around a hot stove
during the cold winter months to continue to discuss baseball. In years past, this has most effectively been done at mid-winter baseball banquets, often sponsored by the local professional baseball team, the Williamsport Grays, the Williamsport Tigers, or the Williamsport Mets. This tradition goes back many years — almost 80 years. There have been a number of these banquets going back to the 1940s. Here are the highlights of some of these local winter baseball gatherings. An appearance by Baseball Commissioner
Eastern League President Tommy Richardson acted as toastmaster for the affair. Detroit Tigers farm director Eddie Gilliand was there and introduced new Williamsport Tigers skipper George Detore. Also in attendance were Joe Bedenk, Penn State baseball coach, Oren Sterling, president of the Hagerstown team in the Interstate League, and John Jackhym, president of the Jamestown entry in the Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League. Miniature hats with the Williamsport Tigers logo were given out to the more than 500 people who attended this banquet. The February 6, 1948, mid-winter banquet had among the principals at it Hall of Fame pitcher Charles Albert “Chief ” Bender, who excelled for the Philadelphia A’s, former Yankee standout third baseman Red Rolfe, new Williamsport Tigers manager Gene Desautels and American League umpire, Joe Paparella. Again, a large crowd of more than 500 attended the banquet at the Lycoming Hotel. The February 8, 1956, baseball banquet was marred by the announcement that the legendary Connie Mack had died earlier in the day at the age of 93. Tommy Richardson, president of the Eastern

office members were also in attendance, including General Manager Joe L. Brown and Branch Rickey Jr., farm director for the Pirates. Rickey introduced John Fitzpatrick, who would be the Williamsport Grays’ skipper that year. Also in attendance was Danny Murtaugh, who was originally supposed to manage the locals but was reassigned to New Orleans. He later managed the Buccos to two world championships. Perhaps the most memorable midwinter baseball banquet occurred on February 4, 1964, when officials from the New York Mets, including the inimitable Casey Stengel, participated to stimulate interest in their newest minor league affiliate, the Williamsport Mets. Stengel entertained his audience by regaling them with tales from his long and storied career, often speaking in the “Stengelese” he was famous for. But the most important thing he had to say was an announcement that the New York Mets would come to Williamsport later that summer to play an exhibition game at Bowman Field against the local “little Mets.” Accompanying Stengel were New York Mets players Bob Elliot and Ed Kranepool, along with Mets comptroller Joe DiGregorio. Cardinals, farm director Eddie Stanky, who played for the Williamsport Grays in 1937, coaches and future Hall-of-Famers, Yogi Berra and Warren Spahn. Stanky introduced new Williamsport Mets manager Kerby Ferrell to the 517 people in attendance. New York Mets broadcaster Bob Murphy acted as master of ceremonies. Casey Stengel made a return appearance at the banquet of January 27, 1966; now retired and again telling entertaining tales, he joined Mets farm director Bob Scheffing, comptroller Aaron Lanier, broadcaster Bob Murphy, former Williamsport Mets player Ron Swoboda and new Williamsport skipper, Bill Virdon at the banquet at the Lycoming
Hotel. The March 8, 1967 banquet would be the last one sponsored by a local team for 40 years. New York Mets public relations director Arthur Richman and Aaron Lanier, comptroller of the New York team, introduced new Williamsport skipper Roy Sievers to those in attendance. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Phillies Caravan stopped in Williamsport with such players as Mike Schmidt, Tim McCarver, Greg Luzinski, and Pete Rose, also at the Lycoming Hotel, but these appearances were not locally sponsored. The Williamsport Crosscutters revived the practice of having a local team host a winter baseball banquet in 2007. It was the first year of their affiliation
with the Philadelphia Phillies. That first banquet featured feared former Phillies slugger Dick Allen and legendary former broadcaster Harry Kalas. In subsequent Hot Stove League Banquets, it has featured former standout Phillies infielder Mickey Morandini, slugger Greg Luzinski, Detroit Tiger 30-game winner Denny McClain, former Colorado Rockies and Pirate manager Clint Hurdle, Hall of Fame baseball executive Pat Gillick, and Sarah “Salty” Ferguson, a former player with the Rockford Peaches of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, featured in the film “A League of Their Own,” just to name a few of the baseball luminaries that have graced the local Hot Stove League Banquet.

Living Well…
Exercise to Improve Your Jeans And Your Genes
M
ost people know that exercising regularly has many benefits such as building strength and endurance, helping you maintain a healthy weight, and strengthening our bones. The list goes on and on. But did you know that it can actually improve our genes? Well, sort of. A 2022 study conducted by researchers from Washington University that was
published in the Journal of Scientific Reports found that when comparing identical twins, those siblings who were more active had a lower risk of metabolic syndrome and lower body mass indexes (BMI). It makes sense that people who exercise are more fit than those who don’t. What was truly interesting, however, was that it also showed differences in their epigenomes. A quick biology class refresher:
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is coded genetic information within our cells using four chemical bases arranged in pairs. These pairs look like rungs on a long, twisted ladder called a double helix. The DNA Dave Bellomo gives instructions on how to make proteins that interact with your body. These are the biological instructions that make all of us unique. DNA, along with the instructions it contains, is passed on
from parent to child. Epigenetics is a branch of biology that studies how behaviors and environmental conditions affect the way genes are expressed. Think of it this way. If DNA, the cellular stuff that makes us uniquely us, is the map. Epigenetics is the way we read the map. So, by exercising, we are not really changing our genetic makeup, but we are altering the expression of those genes and which genes are turned on or off. Back to the study: The study involved 70 sets of identical twins and lasted seven years. Measurements such as BMI and waist circumference were

by signaling DNA to wrap more or less tightly, effectively hiding certain genes and making them less likely to be expressed. The crazy thing about epigenetics is that there is evidence that these changes may have very long-lasting effects, including a reduced risk of chronic diseases, improved mental health, and even a slowing down of the aging process. Crazier still, these benefits may even be passed down to future generations and influence your children’s and grandchildren’s health. Remember, these were identical twins with the same DNA. So, if genes are the only factor in how you look, etc., they should still be identical both on the inside and outside. But they weren’t. The twin that exercised had lower epigenetics markers for metabolic syndrome and other health-related factors. Keep in mind that many lifestyle and environmental factors, such as sleep, stress, diet, and smoking, among others, can affect epigenetic patterns. So, while your family history may indicate strong odds of getting a particular disease, taking care of yourself through exercise and a good diet can greatly influence whether those genes will be activated.

taken pre- and post-study. In addition, fitness trackers were used to monitor activity levels, and participants were asked a series of questions regarding their lifestyle and environment. The twins were also given cheek swabs to test cellular differences. Those with higher levels of exercise activity, more than 150 minutes per week, showed improvements not only physically but on a cellular level as well. How do you actually “exercise” your genes? The two primary ways to induce epigenetic change are DNA methylation and histone modification (Don’t worry, I also had to look this up). First is DNA methylation. Working out affects not only your muscles but also your heart and so on. It also triggers certain biochemical reactions within the cells themselves. This includes certain molecules that communicate with your DNA, which can lead to an increase in gene activity. Which in turn can turn on or off the expression of certain genes, some of which are associated with metabolism and inflammation. The other mechanism of epigenetic change is histone modification. Histones are proteins that DNA wrap around and are important for gene expression. Exercise can also alter these histones

The Roving Sportsman… Culling All Coyotes! By Jon Pries

irst, here are a few facts regarding Mr. Coyote. In just a few weeks, the breeding season begins. Females have one heat period, which lasts 4-5 days and occurs sometime during a 4-6 week period beginning in February. The gestation period runs 58-63 days, resulting in 5-7 pups being born midApril to early May. While coyotes have been recorded in all counties in Pennsylvania, they are most prevalent in the state’s northern half. Eastern coyotes are larger than their western counterpart, with males weighing 4555 pounds and females weighing 3545 pounds. Body length ranges from 48-60 inches (nose to tip of tail). These lean, mean hunting machines spend hours covering miles of trails and logging roads, usually in the cover of darkness, day in and day out, in pursuit of whatever food they can come across. They will often focus on mice in fields or chipmunks in wooded areas but will not hesitate to take a turkey or

deer if the opportunity arises. They are a prime predator of newly born fawns, which are most susceptible in the first few weeks of their life. These next few months, particularly when there is snow on the ground, provide an excellent opportunity to hunt coyotes. They usually need to travel greater distances to find food and spend more time throughout the day doing so. Additionally, over the next month or so, they have increased activity as they seek a mate during the breeding season and look for a denning site. Particularly when they are hungry, they are often more responsive to calling, and while daytime calling can work, waiting until the hours of darkness will usually be more effective. Asking a landowner for permission to hunt coyotes or other predators on his land is often met with a positive response. It might also open the door to permission to hunt other game at a later date. Make sure you contact him before hunting so that he knows you will be on the property, particularly if

not be concerned if there is none. This call is made to alert any nearby coyote, not necessarily bring him running. The second sound is a female coyote yodel (all of these sounds are available on the FOXPRO electronic callers). Emit two or three minutes of the female yodel call, then allow several minutes of silence, followed by a second period of two to three minutes of the yodel. If you are calling from an open field area, these first two sound sequences can be done at a high volume setting. You are trying to get a coyote’s attention. If you are in a woods setting, you might reduce the volume somewhat. The third and final sound is the “clincher.” It is the coyote pup in distress sound, played at a lower volume, and played continuously. This call, presented at the lower volume, can be run for five to ten minutes, and that is usually enough time for any interested coyote to cover the distance and present a shot opportunity. Setting up and calling coyotes is not effective every single time. Still, when it does happen, it is extremely exciting, and you can feel good about helping reduce the predation in your favorite hunting haunts.

you are hunting at night. In the early days of coyote calling, a rabbit in distress call was certainly the most popular and was very effective as well. A fawn in distress call is equally effective. While both are easily produced with a handheld mouth call, the introduction of electronic callers has opened up a limitless array of sounds that will lure a wily coyote within gun range. Caution should be used to not overcall, which is a usual tendency with either handheld or electronic callers. There is a series of coyote vocalizations that have been proven to be highly effective and are very well presented when using an electronic call, such as the ones produced by the Pennsylvania Company FOXPRO. This is a 3-part sequence of sounds. The first sound is a short sequence of just two or three male coyote howls, followed by several minutes of silence. You may want to monitor this period of silence as it is sometimes difficult to judge unless you are actually timing it, and it is a critical step. Repeat two or three male howls and follow them with another period of silence. Be alert to any movement in the distance, but do

aisles of a Hobby Lobby, I spot all kinds of threads in various sizes and colors that could be used to tie an assortment of flies. One of the simplest and most productive early-season flies is a Mop Fly, and it’s what the name implies-it’s made from strands found on a mop! One to two-inch chunks of a strand from a mop is simply tied to a wet fly hook, and chartreuse, pink, yellow, black, and brown are all capable of catching fish. You can probably find this material at almost any hardware store. Admittedly, most of us fly tiers will head to a local fly-tying shop when we need materials, but you never know what useful tying materials are all around us.

should’ve taken a knee.” “They can do whatever they want; there’s no rules against it,” Smith said hours before his firing. “We didn’t stop them in the second half. It is what it is. Hats off to them. They kicked our you-knowwhat in the second half, made us pay, took advantage of turnovers. That’s their prerogative. It is also my prerogative to tell them how I feel, whether people like it or not.” Despite Allen’s apology, in the heat of an NFL game after getting destroyed, Smith’s frustrations can be understood. What may take a lot more understanding are the frustrations expressed by NFL fans, especially those of the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, over last week’s exclusive airing of their teams’ game on Peacock. The game, which aired exclusively on Peacock last Saturday night, is part of a deal between the NFL and NBCUniversal’s streaming service, for which Peacock paid $110 million. It was the first time an NFL post-season game contest was aired mainly on a streaming service. NBC stations in Kansas City and Miami carried the game to those local markets, but the rest of the country had to invest in Peacock to view the game. While NFL fans across the country expressed their displeasure, sports TV deals are a business where sports fans are often held, hostage. More than likely, those fans will end up paying the ransom for more TV games in the future.

record without the Wolverines triumphs. Penn State, along with Big Ten’s supposed higher regarded teams Ohio, State, Iowa, and Wisconsin, all lost their bowl games. Conversely, Northwestern, Rutgers, Maryland, and Minnesota came out on top. Should he take his coaching talent to the NFL, Harbaugh’s personality may find itself clashing with other NFL headmen who definitely take things personally at times. The day before Michigan’s ultimate victory, the NFL ended its regular season complete with coaching dismissals and some challenging rhetoric between the Atlanta Falcons’ Arthur Smith (since fired) and New Orleans Saints’ coach Dennis Allen. With New Orleans up 41-17 in the game’s final minute with the ball at the Falcons’ 1-yard line, Allen intended to knell and run out the clock. Backup quarterback Jameis Winston was sent in to take the final snap in victory formation, but instead, the team ran up the middle for a meaningless touchdown in a 48-17 win. There is no mercy rule in the NFL, but there are unspoken rules of ‘sportsmanship’ that drew Smith’s ire as he confronted Allen. Allen opened his post-game news conference by apologizing to Smith and the Falcons. He said the players made their own call, and the coaches never intended to try to score. “That’s not who we are; that’s not how we operate. We

I
gave up on one of my New Year’s Resolutions. I always have great intentions. Perhaps next year I will find a gym. But until then, I am OK with not being trimmed. No worries, kids. There are many joys when it comes to parenthood, and I consider myself very fortunate to have a son. Jensen recently turned fifteen, and we are still the best of friends. He is at a great age, and I enjoy the many experiences that we share. Jensen makes me very proud in a variety of ways. Getting good grades and singing in the choir sure is grand. I also love watching him make a few plays on the court. Jensen is a chip off the old block. Most of my fondest memories with Jensen involve the outdoors. I cherish these opportunities with him in our surrounding woods. Whether it’s on a hike, or fishing on a bank — there is no greater feeling than just being able to commune. But as he gets older, those afternoon excursions become rarer. I am only hoping this is just a phase, but we, as dads, have been replaced. Jensen. How about a trip to World’s
End? MAYBE. I AM WAITING ON THIS DOWNLOAD. FORTNITE CAME OUT WITH A NEW CREATIVE MODE. LOOK AT THIS LEGO STAR WARS GUY. I do have another promise that I am trying to keep. I am on a personal crusade to replace technology. I will give you boys the winter months. But when it warms up, it will be different. Don’t worry about my bearded brethren. I already rewarded their kids with fishing poles. I didn’t know that Amish children didn’t believe in Santa. Well, they do now, and his name is Spencer Claus. The jury is still out, but our children desperately need more time outdoors. Online gaming, school, homework, sports, and other extracurricular activities often fill the week and many of our weekends. Everyone feels there is no time for anything else. But we must. This younger generation is so consumed with PlayStation, Xbox, iPads, and iPhones. It’s bad. They desperately need more outdoor adventures in their lives to help them develop. Finding ways to get them away from this technology can be a major challenge.
Fortnite has taken the world by storm and is starting to cause an alarming concern. Kids no longer interact with their fathers and would rather converse on their headsets. Jensen and his friends are all still possessed. Jamie Spencer I fear this trend and obsession will only continue. I won’t tell you how much money I have personally spent as I am constantly buying too. I have also lost track of the precious time my son has logged. I am not the only one. Hey J. Want to go fishing with Dad? MAYBE AFTER THIS GAME. DARIAN AND I ARE IN SECOND PLACE. DID YOU SEE THIS NEW BATTLE PACK? Jensen is rather sensitive, and I feel he puts a lot on his plate. He tries to do well and does not like to fail. Technology and Fortnite only add to the headache. I find him constantly interacting with his friends online. Whether it’s on his headset, Facetime or a group text — I am not liking it one bit. He normally plays nice, but then it can get out of hand: less technology
and Fortnite kids. We need more woods. When we are outside on a hike — Jensen shines. The same goes if he is fishing with me from a canoe. I am hoping to get him outdoors for some balance and perspective quite soon. We are so blessed with several local spots just minutes away. We have been all over North Central PA and are planning a west trip with Grandpa Jim soon. I am pulling the plug, and you should, too. Cheers.
