From the Editor…

Let’s Get Some Sleep!

Call 570-326-9322

L

et me start by saying that I am not a medical professional. You should not take medical advice from me as I am wholly unqualified. Please consult with a wholly qualified medical professional before doing or changing anything regarding your health, especially taking any supplements. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way let’s talk about sleep. I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I am in a perpetual state of anxious, with or without reason. I have noticed over the years that my anxiety and my sleep patterns are very much intertwined. The more poorly I sleep, the more anxious I get; the more anxious I get, the more poorly I sleep, thus beginning a nasty cycle. To prevent this, I try to maintain a pretty regimented sleep habit. I get up around the same time every day (including weekends) and attempt to get to bed around the same time each night (including weekends). Things like this help me stay on track, and while I will never be ‘not anxious,’ keeping a good sleep schedule helps to keep the anxiety in a better, more manageable place. So, what can we do to ensure we get the best night’s sleep possible? Let’s discuss. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), here are some habits that can improve your sleep health: As I mentioned, be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the

weekends. Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and turn the heat down! When you sleep in a cool room, your core body temperature drops, which signals your brain that it’s time to sleep. This makes it easier to fall asleep faster and stay asleep throughout the night. According to a study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, lowering the core temperature can help improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smartphones, from the bedroom. If you remove the stimulation, you can train your body that hitting the bed means it’s time to go to sleep. Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime. No one will sleep well if you have a belly full of food. Alcohol can make you sleep too deeply, but not a good, healthy sleep. And caffeine is going to be no bueno for good sleep. Also, I learned this lesson the hard way a few years ago — caffeine stays in your system for much longer than you think. If you are having problems getting to sleep at night, consider cutting caffeine off around noon, as caffeine can stay in your system for six or more hours. Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night. Not only does working out make you physically tired, but it also gets serotonin, dopamine, and all those feel-good brain hormones working, making it easier to

fall asleep. What happens if you do all this and still can’t sleep? Practicing good sleep habits is important, but if your sleep problems continue or interfere with how you feel or function during the day, you should talk to your doctor. Steph The CDC suggests that before Nordstrom visiting your doctor, keep a diary of your sleep habits for about ten days to discuss at the visit. Also, remember to mention if you are taking any medications (over-the-counter or prescription) or supplements. They may make it harder for you to sleep. I also have another suggestion to help with both sleep and anxiety. But, fair warning, this is where my disclaimer at the start comes in. I recently came across a ‘Sleepy Girl Mocktail’; full disclosure: I did find this on TikTok, but bear with me. It’s a concoction of tart cherry juice and magnesium. And is purported to help aid with both sleep and anxiety. Let’s talk about why. First up, the tart cherry juice. Tart cherries naturally contain both melatonin and tryptophan. And while all cherries contain melatonin, the tart variety contains more than others. According to the National Library of Medicine, “Tart cherries, in particular, also have high levels of anti-inflammatory substances at a level comparable to a number of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory products.” Next up, magnesium. According to Gregory Scott Brown, a psychiatrist and an affiliate faculty member at the University of Texas Dell Medical School in Austin. “We definite-

ly need more and bigger studies, but there is some evidence that magnesium can help with mild anxiety and even mild forms of depression. If someone’s feeling wired and kind of wound up, and they want to try something ‘natural’ or take a supplement, magnesium wouldn’t be a bad place to start.” University Hospitals, some benefits of magnesium include heart, bone, and metabolic health, sleep, and stress management. So, how do we make our ‘Sleepy Person Mocktail’? It’s pretty simple. I mix half a glass of 100 % tart cherry juice and a teaspoon of magnesium powder (I use Natural Vitality Calm plus Calcium), and then top with a bit of seltzer water. The seltzer isn’t necessary; if it’s not your jam, I just like to cut the sweetness a bit. Since I’ve started drinking this, I’ve found that I am sleeping really well — and through the night, which is almost unheard of for me. I’m waking up more well-rested, and I have a lot more energy at the end of the day, making me more productive after work. And, of course, better sleep leads to less anxiety. So, if you are having trouble sleeping or are having mild anxiety (especially at bedtime), maybe give this a shot — but be sure to talk to your doctor(s) first. Again, I’m an editor, not a doctor. If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m not Jimmy. He’ll be back next week; I’m a little wordy this week, and he was nice enough to give me the extra legroom. He did want to mention something real quick though. Today (the 24th) is ‘Little’ Jimmy’s birthday! He may be 28 and over 6 feet tall, but he’ll always be Little Jimmy to us! So Happy Birthday, JW3! We all hope you have a very Happy Birthday!!

he King has left the building. Before he left, he swiveled and stood on his tiptoes. He teased a guitar, sneered and shimmied, and left a tide of swooning females in his wake. Yes, he’s gone, but The King meant a lot to people who still cherish his life and mourn his departure. Look past him, though, and you’ll see the man behind him, inside the new book “Elvis and The Colonel” by Greg McDonald and Marshall Terrill. Almost from the moment he could walk, Andreas Cornelius Van Kuijk knew how to hustle. When he was small, he helped his father care for the barge horses along the canals in their native Holland. His youth was spent as a baker, an odd-jobs handyman, a cheese-maker, and a roustabout. He immigrated to America, where he was a hobo, a circus promoter, the manager for several country-western performers, and he spent time in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army. In the midst of all these jobs, he was adopted by a family in America who owned

a carnival. At that time Andreas, wanting a fresh start, renamed himself Tom Parker; he later received the title of “Colonel,” which is an honorary custom in the South. These are the stories Parker told McDonald, who was just a teenager when he met the Colonel. Many things, McDonald admits, weren’t fully-detailed or explained. No matter; obviously, the Colonel was a big man who made big things happen and he knew how to manipulate people to do what he needed to do, even if it meant some truth-stretching or a bit of scamming. Says McDonald, the Colonel knew a good thing when he saw it. And when he met and penned a contract with twenty-year-old singer Elvis Presley, he “hadn’t just signed a deal with the Next Big Thing. He was present at the formation of the entire rock ‘n’ roll universe.” On one hand, there’s a lot of “Elvis and The Colonel” that will make you shake your head – beginning with the propensity of authors Greg McDonald and Marshall Terrill to make Tom Parker seem eighteen feet tall and bulletproof, a veritable whirlwind of opportunistic activity. Add to that a large amount of created dialogue and things become almost comic-bookish. Fortunately, the story itself comes to its own rescue. McDonald acknowledges and then refutes all the negative myths you’ve heard about Parker, explaining what he knew and observed about the businessman’s shrewdness, while also admitting that the Colonel sometimes bent the rules. He shows readers

the depth of Parker’s loyalty to the King, and the delayed pain Parker felt when Elvis died. These and other experiences McDonald had and the memories he shares give readers a good behind-the-scenes peek that nicely overcomes his tornado-like saga of Parker’s early life. This is a no-brainer for anyone who counts themselves among the legions of Elvis fans, who’s been to Graceland multiple times, and has a lifetime pass to impersonator festivals. Get “Elvis and The Colonel” the next time you leave the building.

he Uptown Music Collective has been a musical laboratory and teaching entity that has mentored, taught, and developed the talent of numerous young people in various aspects of popular music genres for more than 20 years. During this time, they have presented many excellent musical concerts demonstrating their talents. They have saluted various popular musical acts, including Motown, Elton John, the Rolling Stones, and many others. Their latest public concert will be “The Decade of Grunge,” to be presented on Saturday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Arts Center. This musical experience relives the iconic sounds of the 1990s and was the winning choice of the over 600 community members who participated in the nonprofit school’s 8th annual online People’s Choice event. This event, presented in partnership with UPMC North Central Pa and UPMC Health Plan, allows the community to vote each year on social media to determine what music will be the subject of the school’s annual January fundraising performance, which raises money for the school’s scholarship and financial aid funds. This performance is sponsored, in part, through a partnership with Hudock Capital Group. “The music of the early ’90s was a con-

tinental shift in the music world, dialing things back from what many saw as the musical excesses of the late ’80s to a grittier, less flamboyant brand of rock that I felt focused more on the song and emotional expression,” Dave Brumbaugh, UMC founder and executive director, told Webb Weekly. “It being the People’s Choice this year made many of our students very happy, as this music excites them, and we’re all looking forward to bringing this great music to the era alive on the CAC stage!” Attendees will be treated to passionate performances of grunge and rock classics from the likes of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Alanis Morissette, Stone Temple Pilots, 4 Non Blondes, and more, creating an unforgettable journey through the revolutionary spirit of ’90s music. The 1990s witnessed the emergence of grunge, a raw and authentic sub-genre of alternative rock emanating from Seattle and blending the powerful distortions of metal with the pure, rebellious spirit of punk. Grunge music became the anthem for a generation seeking solace in its genuine, unfiltered expressions of societal discontent, alienation, and a fervent longing for freedom. Parallelly, the ’90s alternative music scene was an eclectic melting pot of sounds and

But throughout working and rehearsing for this show, I learned so much about it. I realized how significant the ’90s grunge era was in terms of its influence on music today and how it showed a shift in the music people created in the ’90s. I’m so grateful and excited to perform in this show with the Collective.” Tickets for the performance, which are $20 in advance and $25 at the door (plus fees), are only available through the Community Arts Center box office (220 West Fourth St. Williamsport, PA) and website (www. caclive.com). This vibrant decade ushered in many pioneering artists and bands, reshaping the music scene with their inventive sounds and emotionally charged narratives. The Decade of Grunge will highlight the talents of the school’s elite performance group, Special Performance Group 1, comprised of students aged 14 to 19, who audition to be a part of the group and then work together to plan, direct, design, rehearse, and perform the music that inspired many of them to pick up their instruments in the first place. Along with the music, there will be a professional-grade light and sound show organized by the students who work alongside the professionals at the Community Arts Center. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers but also the directors of the show. A group of younger students, or “Tech Monkeys,” will serve as stage technicians and spotlight operators. This show is directed by Uptown Music Collective students Calistra Mahoney (Pennsylvania College of Technology), Connor Evans (gap year), and Izzy Butters (Loyalsock Township High School). adly, Martin Luther King Day came and went with as much attention as National Pet Day (April 11th, for those who are wondering). Part of the reason for the lack of attention is undoubtedly because Dr. King’s principles are now considered quaint at best and dangerous at worst. His dream was for equality among races, but this has been discarded today for goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Personally, I would love for DEI to change to DIE and do just that because it is false, it is unAmerican, and it has done much more harm than good. For example, there was quite a ruckus recently over a newsletter sent out by the Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Sherita H. Golden for Johns Hopkins Hospital highlights the “diversity word of the month,” which was “privilege.” She listed those who were privileged as white, able-bodied, middle-aged, heterosexual, cisgender, males, Christians, English-speaking, and middle or owning class. I hit all of those categories except for middle-aged (I am old!) but would push back hard on having any sense of privilege in my life. I grew up in a low-income home with parents who only had an 8th-grade education and who

worked in factories at minimum wages their entire lives. When I got accepted to college, my father told me, “Congratulations, son, you are paying for it.” And I did, by taking five years for my degree as I had to take off two semesters to earn money for school. I worked so hard, I even had a job where I did a double shift every day for an entire month. After college, I married, and nine months later, our first child arrived. Jobs were so scarce I decided to enlist in the US Air Force. After the USAF, I became an ordained minister but always had to be bi-vocational because my churches were small. My wife was a nurse, and we both worked hard our entire lives, and for the first forty years of marriage, we never had over $1,000 of savings in the bank. So, I did not see any privilege in that

problem with relating to minorities. My best friend, who was my best man at my wedding, was black. My first supervisor in the Air Force was black, and he and I worked so well together that he wrote my commendation for a Meritorious Service Medal. Yet, as Dr. Golden in her Monthly Diversity Digest for January 2024 tells me, “Privilege is an unearned benefit given to people who are in a specific social group. Privilege is characteristically invisible to people who have it.” I can agree with the doctor on this one; it is invisible because I have certainly never seen it. But Dr. King did in his time and combatted it through nonviolent demonstrations and appealing to the heart of our heritage. When Martin Luther King Jr. delivered that last speech of the day on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to over 250,000 civil rights supporters on August 28, 1963, he captured the essence of the Declaration of Independence and our US Constitution better than anyone in the twentieth century. It was not a coincidence that his words echoed another great American, Abraham Lincoln, whose statue was behind Dr. King and was exactly one hundred years after his great Gettysburg Address, sharing the same kind of dream.

sioners Meeting on January 10th, Commissioner Mark Mussina highlighted that MLK Day was on Monday, January 15th, and brought up the fact that the “dream” section at the end was not part of the original speech. He was right. Even though it was the end of the day and extremely hot, when Dr. King was done with his prepared twelve-minute speech (which is brilliant, by the way, and is often overlooked but should not be), he had a captive audience. They were hanging on every word. He closed his speech with the words, “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” With that, the rally was officially over, but no one wanted to leave. There was a group sitting behind Dr. King, one of whom was the well-known singer, Mahalia Jackson. She had accompanied Dr. King throughout the South in their barnstorming for civil rights, and she knew that he had often closed his talks by describing his “dream” for equality. When Dr. King had finished, she leaned forward and said, “Tell them about the dream, Martin!” And so he did, and those next six minutes were truly historic. Unfortunately, with each year passing, it seems to be becoming more and more prehistoric.

enjoy wearing skirts, but it also lends toward the more sophisticated than a faded denim ankle-grazing skirt. Old Navy’s Midi Slip skirt, currently on sale, comes in mocha, black, and berry and can be worn with a turtleneck sweater and heeled boots for a night out. While Quince’s 100% Washable Silk skirt comes in a range of colors and can be styled casually with a chambray shirt, tights, and flats. Closet cleanouts aren’t just for clothing; accessory trends are also up for tossing this winter. Let’s start with bags. Whenever I carry a bucket bag, I find it hard to wear it across the body as it’s always gaping open. On the flip side, even worse are bucket bags with drawstring closures, which are a pain to get open. Even though once upon a time buckets were the “it” bag, I’m ready to let them go in favor of a more functional tote bag, which never goes out of style. Thinking ahead to spring, there’s Upton’s Sage Tote that comes in a fresh citrusy color-blocked pattern on canvas. This can double as a daily bag in warmer months or a reusable shopping bag for light errands. There’s also Herschel Supply Co.’s Classic Tote, made from recycled materials and available in several shades; this is a utilitarian do-it-all kind of tote. Next up, footwear. Sure, these days, it’s all snow boots all the time. But once we get into a few warmer weeks and less snow and slush, what shoes do you want to wear moving forward? As I continue preaching on my practical-dressing soapbox, I find

chunky lug-sole loafers are not on the list, even if they were all the rave last fall. I would gladly swap these for a sleek flat, finding that a simple vs. trendy shoe serves many more occasions, especially with an eye towards spring. Rothy’s The Point flat features their In Love Insole for dreamy comfort and is available in up to 18 different colors and patterns that will elevate even the most casual outfit of leggings and a sweatshirt but also pair perfectly with a dress and cardigan. For a more neutral option, there’s the Zodiac Hill flat from DSW. This pair comes in rich shades of cognac, black, and navy for a chic work-a-day flat, perfect with tailored trousers and a blouse. Lastly, jewelry. Chokers were having a moment there for a few years, and they certainly made a mark on the 90’s however, a less trend-driven neckwear option would be a collar necklace. Collar necklaces still highlight the neck and collarbone but are less restrictive and less juvenile than chokers. I’d say toss those ribbon-clasped pieces to a younger person and explore a more sophisticated version like J.Crew Factory’s Crystal Tennis necklace to bring a little bit of excellence to a V-neck sweater and joggers. Or Little Rooms’ Horizon Necklace with an O-ring style rendered in hypoallergenic stainless steel. Whether you’re doing a major wardrobe overhaul or some light siphoning of your closet, consider tossing out some of these trends for more versatile and sleek options.

his week, after a couple of typical columns on oddball vocab, “Weird Words” once again takes up the related field of etymology; that is, where words come from, what they used to mean and how they acquired their current definitions. Here are eight terms related to food or eating, all with an origin that’s unusual — or at least interesting! Biscuit – This employs the traditional Latin bi(s), signifying two or twice (as in bicycle and bicentennial, etc.). Biscuit literally means twice-cooked — which naturally raises questions about Nabisco’s popular Triscuits. It may surprise you to learn that these latter goodies have been around since 1903; company records don’t clarify whether the name refers to this treat’s three key ingredients (wheat, oil & salt), or to the company’s original insistence that they were made with electricity. And while we’re at it: Nabisco is a shortening of National Biscuit Company — kinda like Necco Wafers, named for the New England Candy Company. The latter, incidentally, are now a whopping 177 years old! Buccaneer – This, of course, is an al-

ternate and somewhat more appealing word for pirate, a profession not nearly as romantic as it now sounds. In olden times, one of the roughest things about piracy was the onboard food — especially meat, which had a tendency to go bad fast. Baked goods weren’t much better, as they were often rock-hard and bone-dry from overcooking for durability. Piracy took a huge leap forward when seafaring thieves learned how to smoke their meat for better preservation — a process acquired from Caribbean natives, who called their grill a buccan or boucan. This allowed for longer voyages and more successful raids by the “boucaneers” — though I doubt anyone foresaw it would produce such a talented football team. (Sorry, Eagles fans.) Frisbee – You might wonder what this is doing among other food-related terms — unless you remember that it’s shaped like a dish. Or, more properly, a pie tin. Early in the last century, Mrs. Frisbie’s Pies was a popular bakery in Bridgeport, CT. Students at nearby Middlebury College were fond of her products, including the tins — which proved curiously aerodynamic, making for great on-cam-

WEIRD WORDS

For the second year in a row, The Hartman Group was designated as a Best Practices Agency 33,000 Agencies in the US 287 Honored Thank You to our Employees and Customers! 1720 Sycamore Road, Montoursville 570-326-7241

pus recreation. The term was eventually trademarked by California’s Wham-O Corporation, with the spelling changed to avoid a lawsuit. Wham-O is therefore the only firm that can use this name; others must call it something like “flying disc” — which just ain’t as cool. Frisbee joins a select group of registered trademarks that have somehow become common nouns, even though they’re technically owned by their inventors and should be capitalized. This group includes: Band-Aids (Johnson & Johnson), Kleenex (Kimberly-Clark), Vaseline (Unilever) and, more surprisingly, Realtor (National Association of Realtors). Laundromat and Dumpster were once trademarks as well — the latter from the slogan “Dempster-Dumpster,” used by a pioneering garbage-truck firm in Knoxville, TN. Grocer – Distantly related to the term gross — in the sense of something large, entire or whole (i.e., gross ignorance, gross domestic product); naturally, this is because grocers offer a vast array of products. The very old French word from which it came had a broad range of meanings that included thick, coarse, rude or common — and thus it did eventually give us the other adjectival meaning of gross. Here’s hoping that does not describe

the place you buy your foodstuffs. Ketchup – Though the actual origin is somewhat disputed, this is now generally agreed to proceed from the Chinese kichap, meaning fish sauce — or the brine in which fish is sometimes stored. The similarly popular condiment relish is, incidentally, simply an adaptation of the verb that means to enjoy — because it makes food taste better (especially hot dogs!). Polecat – This weasel relative is named not for its long, thin, pole-like shape, but rather for what it often steals from farmyards to eat — namely, poultry. Pomegranate – Related to our word grain and to the French pomme (apple), this somewhat surprisingly also gave us the word grenade — not only because they resemble each other, but also in the way both contain tiny pieces (i.e., seeds in one case, and shrapnel in the other). Personally speaking, as far as pomegranates go — I’d just as soon eat the grenade. Along the same lines, the French term for a potato is pomme de terre. Using the Latin terr ( = earth, as in terrain, terra firma and many others), it literally means apple of the earth. Just make sure you brush off the dirt! (The author acknowledges a heavy debt here to the wonderful Online Etymology Dictionary.)

Williamsport Sun January 23, 1946 Annual Community Trade Association Shows Process in 17 Local Projects Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

ith 28 definite objectives for civic betterment set up by the Community Trade Association, the organization’s annual report reveals that despite hampering wartime conditions, notable progress

has been made in 17 of them. The annual report of C.E. Noyes, manager of the C.T.A., was mailed to members today. Included in the four-page compilation are not only the activities of the C.T.A. but also of its associated organizations — the Merchants Bureau and the Young Men’s Bureau. Revealed in Mr. Noyes’ report is the com-

pletion of seven of the C.T.A.’s projects — flood control, new industrial buildings, new industrial payrolls, isolation hospital, livestock market, produce markets and railroad shops and yards relocation. Virtually certain is the new Market Street Bridge, while progressing are airport and aviation improvements, city-county building, county institution district addition, downtown modernization, new grade schools, housing program, sewage disposal plant, stream pollution prevention and street improvements. Listed among projects yet to be completed are an auditorium, building code, city beautification, city manager government, equalized assessments, improved rail passenger service, recreational program, river im-

provements, smoke abatement, superhighway through the city, and a union station. Civic advancement during 1945 reveals the inception of TWA and PCA airline service into Williamsport and the prospect of the granting of a third line service between New York City and Williamsport to the west. A downtown modernization committee reports detailed plans for remodeling and modernizing business blocks. Steam cleaning and painting many buildings area also contemplated. During 1945 five new industries have located in Williamsport including Armstrong Furniture Company, Beadle Spacer Strip Company, Cobbler’s Inc., Davenport Plastics and Ray-O-Vac.

HOME COOKIN the past few years. My family is so easy to please. I have one nice, big meal each week. Sunday, we will have a big brunch after church. Then, one night, something easy like tacos, ham cosmos, grilled cheese with soup, or something along those lines. A summer night might be hot dogs over a fire. A winter night might be a pot of chili. Then don’t forget, a leftover night! Remember, it’s about being together. Your kids won’t remember every single meal you ever made. They will remember the thought and love you put into each meal and that you spent dinner together chatting about your day. Take the time to figure out your meals for a week. Make a grocery list. Check apps if you have the time, or grab a flier at the door to see any good deals, maybe to start preparing for the following week! Shop at places like Aldi and Sam’s Club if you get the time. It takes a little practice, but I promise you it’s a game-changer. Plus, there is nothing like knowing what you are having for dinner all week before the week even begins. Takes such a load off of the person planning and preparing these meals. Happy shopping! Turkey TBL Ingredients: • Turkey bacon cooked to your liking • Lettuce • Mayo • Tomato • Cheese

Clarence was produced, written and directed by Jeymes Samuel, who, like Stanfield, is also a musician. Samuel even composed the incidental music for this film; and he must have worked on the peerlessly appropriate soundtrack, which really helps tie together the movie’s mix of old and new. After 2021’s The Harder They Fall, this is only Samuel’s second full-length feature; but here’s hoping it won’t be his last. Any writer who can be this hip while also treating Christianity with respect is definitely someone to keep an eye on. But I sure would like to know what that final idea was that Clarence had…

beautifully played by David Oyelowo. While this famous gospel prophet would actually have been long dead by the end of Christ’s ministry, the film’s portrayal is, surprisingly, somehow comical, convincing and totally consistent with John’s character in the New Testament. Yet despite some humor, this movie becomes increasingly serious as Clarence grows in stature and fortitude; its final scenes are very thought-provoking — but at the same time so painful that I was starting to feel betrayed. Until that amazing coda came along. Like Jesus himself, it winds up redeeming just about everything. Crosscutters Hot Stove League Banquet Another Great Success By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he Crosscutters Hot Stove League Banquet, held on January 17th, was considered a success by attendees and organizers. The banquet was highlighted by the presence of former standout Pirate relief pitcher Kent Tekulve, ESPN sportscaster Tim Kirkjian, newest Bowman Field Hall of Fame inductee Chris Carlin, and newest Williamsport Sports Walk inductee Denise Day. Regrettably, Ed Ott, who was supposed to be one of the participants, had to bow out due to health reasons. The banquet was a success on the charity front as well, having raised more than $12,000 for the Lycoming County United Way. I interviewed Tekulve before the banquet and asked if he remembered Williamsport when he played in the New York-Penn League in 1969, a year when Williamsport was in the league as the Williamsport Astros. “I remember that we played Williamsport, and I think I remember coming here for a three-game series, but I don’t have any specific recollection about Williamsport,” Tekulve said. He had a lot more to say about his friend

and former catcher — Muncy’s Ed Ott. “Ed and I came up together through the minor leagues. He was a roommate and protector,” Tekulve said. “He’s a great guy and great handler of pitchers and was a great mentor to Steve Nicosia, who, along with Ed, was one of our catchers on that 1979 Pirate championship team.” Tekulve was asked about that championship ’79 team. “We all worked together and picked each other up. Everybody on the team contributed, from the most prominent starters like Willie (Stargell) and Dave Parker and the pitching staff to the utility players like young Matt Alexander. It was a great team to be part of.” In that championship season, Tekulve recorded 31 saves and won 10 games. His pitching prowess was one of the main factors in the Pirates’ success in 1979. The newest Bowman Field Hall of Fame honoree, Chris Carlin, who was a radio broadcaster for the then Williamsport Cubs in 1994 and 1995 and who went on to broadcasting prominence with ESPN, WFAN, and other outlets, was overwhelmed and joyful about returning to Williamsport to accept his honor. “It was great coming back here. I had a flood of memories and emotions as I drove across the Market Street Bridge,” Carlin said. “This is really where I got

my Williamsport experience and how I cherish the time I spent here.” The newest Sports Walk inductee, Denise Day, who was a standout softballer at the University of Nebraska and, during her time there in 1985, played in the NCAA women’s softball championship game, was grateful for her honor. She was also fulsome in her praise of late sportscaster Bill Byham, who was also one of her teachers. “Mr. Byham always encouraged me, and he was responsible for me getting my scholarship to the University of Nebraska,” Day said. He mailed my clippings out there and attested to my character and grades. I’m very grateful to him.”

Faith Q&A Series Introduction

oes God exist? Is the Bible true? Is the Bible reliable? Why does the Bible sometimes seem to contradict itself? Why does God answer some prayers and not others? Why does evil exist? Where did evil come from? Did God really create the universe in six days? If God knows all things, including the future, then how can we have free will? If we have free will, then is it possible that our decisions could surprise the all-knowing God? If it is true that God has a sovereign plan and it can’t be changed, then why

bother with prayer? Why express faith at all? Why does God heal one person and not another? Why do evil people sometimes enjoy great success in life? Why do righteous people sometimes suffer terribly? Why are so many Christians hypocrites? Why are some Christians greatly blessed while others face fierce persecution? If God is the Sovereign Creator, then why did He set the universe in motion if He knew it would turn into such a mess? These are faith questions. We all have them. For some, they repre-

sent nothing more than irritants to faith. For others, they are debilitating cancers that weaken faith — and even kill it. Which leads to other faith questions. Why do some people believe so easily while Tim others struggle terHartzell ribly? Where does faith come from? Is it the result of nurture? Is it based on family and community and experiences and traditions? Or is it the result of nature? Is it based on the hard wiring of our intel-

ligence quotient, temperaments, and personality? Why do we see life so differently? Why do some highly respected scientists believe in God? Why do others reject even the possibility of God? Why? WHY? WHY!!? In this series of articles, we’re going to explore some of these faith questions. As you know, Q&A stands for questions and answers. From the start of this series, I want to be very clear about one thing: I am an expert in asking questions; I am not an expert in answering them. Forty years ago, I was an expert in answering faith questions. I had confident answers for nearly every question people threw at me. In fact, I was so confident I would throw answers at people who

Rock grace and mercy of God. Life has been tough. It has been filled with death and loss and the painful stabs inflicted by friends and loved ones. I have encountered seasons when I was very disappointed in God, and my faith was nearly gone. The flood of life’s suffering has eroded away some of my sandy cockiness and arrogance. I now understand just how little I know. Maybe that’s what Paul was feeling when he wrote, For we know in part, and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now, we see only a reflection

as in a mirror; then, we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known — I Corinthians 13:9-12. While I now have more questions than answers, my faith is not weaker. The erosion of sand has revealed the unmovable and unchangeable Rock of God. My faith is stronger today than ever because it is in God and not in me. And while I have grown, there is still much sand that needs to be washed away. God is going to send more suffering my way. Why? Because I know He loves me too much to let the sand remain. I now understand that the remaining Rock is all that matters. Father, if suffering is what it takes to wash away the sand, then let it rain.

I’m a bit shocked that I just wrote that little prayer. When I was 19, I prayed for God to bless me. How strange, at 59, to pray that He would let me suffer. Maybe, just maybe, I am becoming less childish. Maybe there’s less sand under my feet. If so, to God be the glory. Over the next few months, we’re going to take on some of the big questions of faith. I invite you to go on the journey with me. Will we find answers? We might. What I pray is that the sand will be washed away, leaving behind the solid Rock upon which our faith can stand. Father, let it be so. Amen.

weren’t even asking questions. In my spiritual immaturity, I was very zealous — and I was convinced I was right. And then the storms of life hit. The rain came down hard. The sand of my arrogance began to shift under my feet. The more I suffered, the less I knew. A friend once said to me, “I used to have five theories about parenting. Now I have five children and no theories.” I don’t think that quote was original to my friend, but she had five kids, so I’ll cite Debbie as the authority. When I was 19, I had hundreds of answers. Now I’m 59, and I have hundreds of questions. When I was 19, I was confident in myself. At 59, my only confidence is in the solid

A Rerun? By Scott N. Lowery

very so often to lighten the late-night mood, I find myself tuning in to WNEP-2 to catch reruns of the old Johnny Carson late-night show. While Carson’s monologue and guests are not timely, they remain funny and entertaining. Unlike the current late-night lineup of Carson wannabes whose mission seems to be hurling unfunny insulting jabs at those individuals they dislike, Carson’s off-beat humor is still funny well over

thirty years after they first aired. Reruns of other old TV shows remain popular in many circles and provide a bit of a respite from some of the programming that is trying to pass for entertainment these days. That said, according to a recent poll, there is one rerun the majority of American voters have no appetite to watch this year: a rerun of the 2020 presidential race between the former president and the one now occupying the White House. 60% of Republican voters polled, and 59% of Democrats

come by. David Letterman, another of the oldtime late-night TV show hosts, was famous for his Top Ten list he would present each evening. One ranking of United States presidential performances revealed these Top Ten achievers: 10. James Madison (1809-1817) – He had strong moral authority and is wellregarded by historians. He declared war against Great Britain in 1812, which Americans considered a success, leading to a period of soaring nationalism. 9. John F. Kennedy (1961-1963) – He rates well for crisis management and handling of international relations. He stood up to the Soviets and defused the Cuban Missile Crisis. He inspired Americans by vowing to put a man on the moon and supported progress on civil rights. 8. Lyndon Johnson (1963-1969) – He tops the charts for his pursuit of equal justice for all Americans by securing the enactment of the landmark Civil Rights Act. 7. Harry Truman (1945-1953) – Although unpopular when he left office, he possessed strong foreign policy leadership. His leadership ended World War II and watched the signing of the establishment of the United Nations. 6. Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961)

There are those voters who will back a particular candidate no matter what the issue may be. However, another recent poll asked people what they considered the most important qualities a presidential candidate should possess. The most cited qualities include: – Honesty: A president should be truthful and transparent with the public. – Integrity: A president should be ethical and have strong moral principles. – Leadership: A president should be able to inspire and motivate people and have the ability to make tough decisions. – Experience: A president should have experience in government or other leadership roles. – Communication Skills: A president should be able to communicate effectively with the public and other world leaders. – Judgement: A president should be able to make sound decisions based on facts and evidence. – Empathy: A president should be able to understand and relate to the needs of the people they serve. – Vision: A president should have a clear vision for the future of the country and be able to articulate it to the public. most trying periods, the Civil War, and in 1863 signed the Emancipation Proclamation. 1. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945) – He assumed the presidency during the worst of the Great Depression but assured the American people: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” He also led the U.S. through the perilous years of World War II and was lauded for his devotion to economic justice. Any top ten listing can be objective, but it is interesting to note that no presidential leaders of this century are included in this listing. In 1985, county music legend George Jones had a hit record entitled “Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes.” The song questioned who would step forward to carry on the storied history of country music in this country. Luckily, new performers emerged to continue the popularity of the genera. The early returns of the Iowa Caucus and the New Hampshire primary have begun the march to the November election. Yet, concerned Americans may be asking the same question posed by Jones’ song – is there anyone out there who can step up and provide this country the leadership needed to close the divide now being experienced? Not all reruns are fun to watch.

least six melanistic coyotes walking down a wooded trail. So, how does this rare black color phase occur? An animal can be darker or lighter depending on how much of a pigment called “melanin” it has. A predominance of melanin in animals will yield the black color as seen in coyotes and other animals. Yes, on very rare occurrences, it can be found in whitetail deer! Seeing a coyote in the wild with this melanistic black color phase is a rare treat indeed, and if you have done so, you can count yourself among the lucky few. If you have not, these next couple of months, while snow is on the ground, is a prime time to try to spot one as coyotes are on the move searching for their next meal.

There is an 11-second video on YouTube from September 10, 2022, showing a black coyote running through an open field somewhere in the Pennsylvania countryside. Research has been compiled that reveals there are more numerous black coyotes in Alabama, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. Over 30 years, data collected from 460 coyotes from these four states showed that 5.7% of all coyotes captured were black. Invasive Species in Our Waterways

t seems like the subject of invasive species, be they land-based species, aquatic plants, or animals, comes up more frequently these days. As a fisherman, I have noticed several new threats to our waterways, including invasive crayfish, zebra mussels, and the northern snakehead. Other species of fish, like the silver and bighead carp, while not yet found here in Pennsylvania, are of great concern. In addition, ten viruses and diseases have shown up here, such as gill lice, that are of concern. The snakehead is a voracious predator

that originated in China, Korea, and Russia and first showed up in a pond in Maryland in 2002. It was probably somebody’s pet and was put in the pond because it was no longer wanted. In 2004, a snakehead showed up in Meadow Lake near Philadelphia, and several catches have been made in the Conowingo Reservoir section of the Susquehanna River. The snakehead is now being found in the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. Being the voracious predator, it is, and with no natural enemies, the snakehead is a serious threat to our native species like smallmouth and

As of January 1, as part of an updated section of the Pennsylvania Code that deals with the propagation introduction, and transportation of fish in Commonwealth waters, every angler who movers live fish from one water to another is now required to submit a Notice of Stocking (NOS). What’s involved here is every angler who likes to catch bass or bluegills from a local lake and then take them back to a private lake to stock them or, for that matter, any angler who uses live bait and then releases any unused bait back into the lake or stream. locations or moving fish from one lake, stream, or pond to another. As far as fishing with live minnows go, I have always made it a practice to bring any live minnows back home with me for use later. I simply place a small aquarium air pump in my minnow bucket, and that keeps the bait pretty healthy until the next trip. If you don’t intend to use leftover live minnows, they should not be put into the location you are fishing but instead taken home — they make good fertilizer. The NOS is required for anyone who introduces fish into any Pennsylvania water, public or private, with the exception of fish baited on a hook for fishing purposes. Closed ornamental backyard ponds are exempted. The NOS can be completed on your smartphone or computer using the HuntFish.PA.gov website or by submitting it by e-mail or traditional mail. When we need something, Peter is there to help us. Now, with his involvement with DBH, quite frankly, the only thing that has changed is he has less time to devote to the teams TSH owns. In our case, that isn’t a problem because he has let us run with the ball since he bought the team. “It has been interesting to watch from the outside all the things that he has been doing since his involvement with DBH, but as far as his relations with the Crosscutters are concerned, I don’t see anything changing.” As the CEO of DBH Fruend’s group, the latest purchase of the Class AAA Worcester Red Sox now includes 10 AAA teams, including the Scranton/Wilkes Barrer RailRiders. Nine AA teams are included, among them the Altoona Curve, and ten

Single-A teams, one being the Crosscutters opponent Hudson Valley Renegades from the former NY-Penn League days. The group’s interests include three of the top four Boston Red Sox affiliates. Freund was already a minor league owner of the Crosscutters and the Charleston team when his family’s packaging business was sold. Soon after, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred brought him in to consult on the reorganization of the minor leagues a few years ago. When the family business was sold, Freund realized what he wanted to do: run minor league baseball teams. Like his ownership relationship with the Crosscutters, Freund and DBH operate with a hands-off policy at the local level.

guys performing at an open mic night at the Bullfrog. They covered ‘I Was Wrong” by Chris Stapleton. Alonzo had the lead vocals. His voice was quite impressive. He absolutely nailed the challenging song. I knew he was talented, but this little clip gave me goosebumps. I shared it with my bride and sent it to my rents. They were equally impressed. I still think I can beat him in HORSE, but I have no prayer in a karaoke contest. “Alonzo Rice is the truest of leaders,” Head Football Coach Mike Pearson stated. “He truly sums up all of the best qualities of our school. Alonzo is smart, tough, enthusiastic, and wise. He is so talented in the areas of academics, building skills, the arts, and athletics. And then on top of that, Alonzo is strong and kind. He is an exceptional leader. A tremendous kid.” Alonzo hopes to head south after graduation. He is looking at a few schools in Savannah, Georgia, to study construction management. I hope he continues with his music. Again. I am so proud of my friend for trying something new. Thinking outside the norm. Williamsport Area offers so much, and Alonzo Rice stepped up to take full advantage. Whether it is sports, choir, or theatre, my man is front and center. I have enjoyed getting to know him and follow his passions. What an impressive young man. You have to hear some of the covers. Fantastic stuff, kid. Keep doing your thing. Cheers.

My man often wears a Metallica T-shirt and has a few tattoos. Alonzo has a great smile. He is so polite and very soft-spoken. Alonzo also plays basketball for the Millionaires. He is super tough, a solid defender, and rebounds extremely well. Alonzo does all of the intangibles, and he always plays hard. I always compliment him on his demeanor. My man never gets rattled. He understands his role. Alonzo is a great teammate. He often comes over to say hello before every home game. Again. Alonzo Rice is one cool cat. I guess we are chums now, and I enjoy introducing him to some of the long-time Williamsport fans. Alonzo always greets them with a smile and then heads back to the squad. When he leaves, I tell my friends about his musical talents. They are in awe. Don’t judge a book by its cover, kids. “I always had a love for music,” Alonzo explained. “And over the past two years, I have been able to try new things. I am stepping out of my comfort zone. Like singing in the choir, playing guitar, and trying out for the school play. I am getting more confident in my abilities and trying to find a niche. I love Jimmy Hendrix. He is the man. But I have also learned to appreciate many other different artists.” I came across a video of Alonzo and his
