Love and President’s Day Reality

H
appy Valentine’s Day, everyone. Please don’t forget that special someone in your life on a day intended to show and celebrate your feelings. Maybe it’s your spouse or someone you’re hoping will be. Maybe you and the person you love now have children to celebrate on Valentine’s Day. I have always loved getting my kids a Valentine’s Day card and their favorite candy. Some years, when they were little, they even got matchbox cars or maybe baseball cards. Now that they’ve gotten older, Michelle and I hope to take them out for a Valentine’s Day dinner that includes the loved ones in their life. I don’t want to interfere with their plans, so it doesn’t have to be on Valentine’s Day. I have always liked going out before or a little bit after Cupid’s holiday when restaurants aren’t as busy. Speaking of Valentine’s cards, I enjoyed taking them to school back in my Central Elementary days. I’m sure many of you remember that time in your life when you would get small Valentine’s Day cards for everybody in your class, exchange them, and have a little party with your classmates, complete with heart-shaped cookies and conversation
hearts. I was much more worried about taking in the coolest cards of that time than trying to persuade a young lady to be my Valentine. I remember my favorite Valentine’s cards back in the day, were Spider-Man, a Marvel Comics set that included Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America, and Snoopy. Just like Halloween, when my Mom would take me to Hills to pick out the perfect costume, we went to find the perfect Valentine’s cards for my friends. The trip would include a frozen Coke, a bag of popcorn, and a couple of those little NFL football helmets out of the quarter machine. Thank you for the memories, Mom, and Happy Valentine’s Day. That brings up another good point: no matter how old your parents might be, wish them a happy Valentine’s Day. I guarantee you they’ll never get tired of hearing it. Maybe even throw in a card or their favorite candy and, if possible, include them in that Valentine’s meal out. If possible, include the grandparents and remember what I mentioned earlier: this doesn’t have to happen on February 14th. I’ll finish up my Valentine’s Day thoughts with a song from back in my
elementary school days that was probably playing on the radio when my Mom took me to Hills. As I grew older in life, I realized what an amazing voice and recording artist this lady was. The song is Jim perfect not only for this Webb Jr. article but for the point of American history we are currently living in. You may have already guessed it: Dionne Warwick and “What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love.” If you haven’t heard it in a while, Google it and give it a listen. I’ll finish my article this week with another thing our world needs now to go with that love, sweet love. Monday is Presidents’ Day; a day first created to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of George Washington. This day was first recognized as Washington’s Birthday. As time went by, President Abraham Lincoln was added to this day, and it became the federal holiday known as Presidents’ Day. Again, this was also to honor and recognize the accomplishments of President Lincoln. Both men were selfless, sacrificing, and amazing leaders at pivotal times in American history. Well, folks, we are at another pivotal time in American history when we need somebody to step up like these men did.
Better Together
There are obviously other presidents that could be added to this list, like Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Reagan, and others. Our Nation needs a President who puts America and the safety and well-being of American citizens first. We need an individual strong enough to stand up for this with the ability to make it happen. We cannot continue to go down the primrose path we are currently on. We must rebuild our Country to where the world is dependent upon us, not where we are dependent upon any other nation. Whether it be energy, pharmaceuticals, or any daily necessity. It must come back to being made and provided in the USA by fellow Americans. As our Nation navigates its way through the primary election season, I pray this person can be found. Our Nation must also have leadership that puts law and order first. This continued caving to the criminal element must end. We are witnessing major cities being overrun and destroyed by crime. This is often followed by that criminal element extending out into smaller towns and municipalities not prepared or funded to handle it. The battle of good vs evil has never been more prevalent and witnessed daily. The time has come to find a president and change the narrative. May God Help and Bless America.

Say ‘I Love You’ With Valentine’s Day Gifts
F
ebruary 14th, better known as Valentine’s Day, provides a beacon of light in the middle of winter. Each February, stores and homes are decked out in red and pink hearts, and florists wait in the wings to prepare sweet-smelling bouquets for the bevy of buyers eager to bring bountiful blooms into their living spaces. Gift-giving is an integral component of Valentine’s Day. That means the search may be on to find items that will give voice to feelings of love and affection in tangible ways. These gifts are perfect for anyone on your list. Fragrance: Although purchasing fragrances can be tricky, if your special someone provides hints of a scent or brand they prefer, it can make buying perfume or cologne easier. However, there’s also the option of going with trends. Market experts believe vanilla is set to be a stand-out aroma in 2024, and aromatherapy and feelgood fragrances are trending this year. Cozy clothes: Snuggling together in front of the fire may be an appealing prospect for lovebirds. Cozy gifts can include matching loungewear or pajama sets, or ultra-soft sweatpants and hoodies for chasing away the chill. Personalized prints: Companies offer custom song lyric posters or framed artwork so that a special song, whether it
was heard during a first date or danced to during a couple’s wedding, can be memorialized. Other personalized prints can include images of the sky on a key date to commemorate a special moment in time. Jewelry offerings: Jewelry is a go-to Valentine’s Day gift. Vogue says that there’s a strong likelihood that boho jewelry trends are making a comeback this year. Pendants, beads and multi-strand necklaces are sure to be a must-have look. Travel treats: Couples who love to travel can gift travel-related items to their special someone. A high-end brand of luggage, tickets to a cruise or another destination, or an excursion upgrade on a planned getaway may fit the bill. Gourmet eats: Foodies often find enjoyment sampling the fare at top-notch restaurants. While Valentine’s Day tends to be quite busy at most restaurants, a gift of a night out for dinner at another time may be the way to tug on the heartstrings while nurturing the palate. Valentine’s Day is here before people know it, so it is key to have gift ideas at the ready.

and boots, layer some tall, athletic socks and a turtleneck underneath. Then, a duster cardigan and hand warmers for a mid-layer. Finish with an infinity scarf, hat, and coat as your last layer. If you’re in need of a more polished look, then layer translucent tights under a wide-leg trouser, a bodysuit under a cable knit sweater, and top off with gloves, a fisherman’s style cap, and a neutral overcoat. I’d wear some footie socks and chunky sneakers with this outfit and carry along a pair of pumps in an oversized tote to change into if need be. Of course, nowadays, the old rules of footwear have loosened, and sneakers can be just as chic as heels and loafers. Just be sure to treat your sneakers like dress shoes and keep them clean to pull off this look. If you prefer dresses and skirts, you can still wear them during the cold weather and not freeze. Fleece-lined leggings and thermal tights will keep you in dresses and skirts all winter long. Layer a turtleneck under shirtdresses or a blouse under a sleeveless dress for a jumper-like effect. Of course, sweaters and cardigans can be worn over dresses and with a skirt. If you’re going with a thicker sweater or oversized silhouette with a knit, balance that out with a more fitted skirt. To further winterize your
look, add weather-appropriate boots, be those snow boots, hiking boots, cowboy boots, or knee-high boots. I, for one, enjoy the contrast of rugged footwear with a feminine frock. To top things off, go for a coat that hits at the same hem length for a clean finish. Another element of layering is shapewear. Defining bodysuits, especially those that hit mid-thigh or jumpsuit styles that have full leg coverage, can work both in supporting your silhouette as well as acting as a base layer. Good shapewear won’t cut into or overly restrict you and can be worn all day in relative comfort. From this solid base, you can layer just about any outfit while avoiding bulk and bulge for a chic winter outfit. The key to layering for this time of year is to have what’s underneath the outer and mid layers wearable and appropriate on its own. More importantly, each layer should be comfortable. If things feel tight or bunched up, then those pieces probably aren’t meant to be in a multi-layered look. The way the weather is now, you may not need each layer, and a coat over a non-layered look can still serve your needs. But if you find you need a bit more insulation on these chilly mornings, consider trying out some chic winter layers.

T
he Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on the first of February had a small item on the Salary Board agenda that stated, “Sheriff ’s Office – Request to add a Part-Time Clerk III, Paygrade 4.” Commissioner Metzger invited Sheriff Lusk to comment on the reason for this personnel addition to the Sheriff ’s Office. Lusk was more than ready to oblige. The additional staff was solely to handle PFAs (Protection from Abuse) orders. Lusk noted that at the current rate, his office will approach 800 of these orders this year. He told the commissioners that there are so many the courts must have hearings every day of the week, even 10 to 12 a day. To make matters even more complicated, the sheriff ’s office must serve PFAs from other counties as they are going to other counties as well. Lusk said it so succinctly, “We don’t see an end in sight.” The issue of domestic abuse is an ugly scar in our society, and unfortunately, it is continually growing. This can happen to anyone who interacts with another person. The power of the PFA can require that the defendant has no contact with the plaintiff, that the defendant leaves a
shared residence, or that the defendant has limited contact with the plaintiff, depending on the circumstances. But it can be very demanding upon the one being served the PFA. A judge can order that all weapons be confiscated. The defendant may be required to vacate their own home if they own the house, and the petitioner has no claim to it but has nowhere else to stay. The PFA Act allows the Family Court judge a great deal of discretion in fashioning an order that is designed to prevent any further abuse. It is not the same thing as a criminal conviction, but it can act like one. The Pennsylvania State Police maintain a record of Protection from Abuse orders, and therefore, the existence of the order could show up on a background check

COUNTY HALL of the defendant. These are used for employment, housing, or educational opportunities, a blot that could result in a deal-breaker. Given all this, it would seem that the veracity of the offense should be assured. However, in the “he said/she said” scenario (or “he said/he said” or “she said/ she said”), a judge is forced to take the word of the one who seeks the petition. Granted, emotional suffering can be just as painful as physical suffering, and allowances must be made for those in distress. But the reality is that a PFA could be issued even if there is no abuse at all. This has been known to happen when a person seeks to get back at another person simply out of spite or if there are children between the couple, and it is believed that a PFA is extra ammunition when child custody comes up in court. To understand this growing legal problem goes back to Pennsylvania’s first Protection from Abuse Act, established in 1976, the second in the entire country. Since that time, it has been adjusted and reviewed in Harrisburg, most recently in House Resolution #735 in 2015. This was cited and reviewed in a staff study done by the Joint State Government Commission of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania conducted in November 2016. The purpose of this study was stated clearly in the
beginning, “2016 House Resolution No. 735 directed staff of the Joint State Government Commission to review the Protection from Abuse Act to identify gaps in the law as well as practices and procedures in its implementation that may be subjecting victims to an unreasonable risk of additional harm. The recommendations contained herein are intended to close those gaps and redirect practices and procedures to eliminate risks to victims insofar as possible.” That statement clearly outlines that the primary focus was ensuring that the process protected the victims. Going through the 82 pages of this report was a long slough, but I had hoped that somewhere in there would be some recognition of restraints needed for those who used the process vindictively and not for protection as it was designed. However, the report was solely on the side of making the process more accessible and expedient. Make no mistake: domestic violence is an abhorrent, disgusting problem in our society. But the power of the PFA also makes it a dangerous tool as well. Why has the number of PFAs in Lycoming County tripled from 200 in 2010 to 653 in 2023 and is heading toward 800 by this year’s end? Is there a crime wave of abuse or an abuse of the law? Whatever it is, our tax dollars are paying for it.

Thomas T. Taber Museum Inaugurates Digital Guide By Lou Hunsinger, Jr.

he Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Museum is one of the finest cultural assets in northcentral Pennsylvania. It preserves and highlights Lycoming County and the surrounding area’s rich history. In a bid to improve bringing this precious cultural asset to more people, the museum has launched a digital guide. They have done this through Bloomberg Connects, the free arts and cultural app created by Bloomberg Philanthropies. The Bloomberg Connects app, available for download from Google Play or the App Store, makes the Taber Museum accessible for either onsite or offsite visits through photos, audio, and video. More than 300 cultural institutions around the globe are featured on the Bloomberg Connects app. The app platform is part of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ longstanding commitment to supporting digital innovation in the arts. Bloomberg Connects makes it easy to access and engage with arts and culture from mobile devices when visiting in person or anytime from anywhere. Officials at the Taber Museum are pleased with this latest innovation that the Museum is now a part of. Seth Burch, president of the Board of Governors of the Taber Museum, told
Webb Weekly, “Whether it’s your first trip to the Taber or you are a frequent visitor, Bloomberg Connects adds so much to your experience. For example, in the 20th Century Room, you’ll see a horse-drawn steam-operated fire engine with a brief description. When you are standing in front of the fire engine using Bloomberg Connects, you get a detailed description of how the engine worked, where the firemen rode, and how the machine operated to pump the water through the hoses. You can see each aspect of the engine following the description, which allows you to imagine how the firefighters did their job. Bloomberg Connects also features many displays, like the Victorian Room, with detailed narrated descriptions of what you are seeing. It’s like having a private guided tour of the museum. Did you know the chandelier in the Victorian Room was made in France, shipped to Philadelphia, and came to Williamsport using the canal system? And why is there a stuffed Peacock in the back of the room? Whether you use the app while visiting or use it visiting virtually, Bloomberg Connects allows you to have a more informative and enjoyable trip through Lycoming County’s history.” The Taber Museum will be participating in the “Raise the Region” fundraiser on March 13 and 14. That fundraiser will be a good opportunity to show the museum support.

Williamsport Sun February 15, 1924 Dance Halls to be Placed Under City Censorship Complied by Lou Hunsinger Jr.
T
Call 570-326-9322
he city administration is getting ready to censor the city dance halls and ballrooms of Williamsport and will impose a license fee under the Pennsylvania law of May 1919 for first-, secondand third-class cities. Lieutenant of Police, Oreste Giglio has received copies of the licenses, permits, rules and regulations governing public dances and halls in other parts of the state and the police department and Mayor Gilmore are working on the idea of drafting an ordinance for Williamsport in compliance with the Pennsylvania law. The fee for the permit is to be $1 to be paid at the time of the issuing of the permit for each public dance or ball. Such place, ballroom, hall, or academy used for hire must be licensed and the application should be made to the
mayor. Each license expires in June of each year and the fee for the license is for the whole or any part of the year. The license must also be conspicuously posted in the hall. The places where the dances are held must be at all times be kept clean and sanitary and all areas connected with the hall or ballroom must be kept open and well-lighted. All public dance halls and private dance halls are subject to police inspection and any police officer can vacate them for any violations of the law, rules or regulations. After 9 p.m. all persons under the age of 16 years are barred from public dance halls or ballrooms and those places must be closed at 1 a.m. The mayor may upon application from any bona fide organization or society and upon proper investigation may grant a permit to permit the dance to go until 2 a.m.

we dealt with the death of Chris’s father and my parents getting a divorce. We always said if we can get through that, we could get through anything. July 28, 2009, we had our son Tyler, who looked just like his daddy. January 11, 2014, we had our daughter Kenzy, who also looked just like her daddy. Life felt complete at 28 years old, and our love for each other only grew stronger. We had a handsome son and a beautiful daughter to share our lives with. We made a family of our own to start traditions and share our love for each other, our passions, our religion, our story, and so much more with these two wonderful kids. Chris and I just have a relationship that I can’t explain. It just comes easy. It’s truly never been hard for us. We share the same love for many things like motorcycles, food, music, cars, spending time together, and traditions built with our kids. Our family time is important to us. Our time at night just laying close together watching our favorite shows is one of our favorite things. Just watching an hour of our shows before hitting Dreamland is something we enjoy and how we unwind at night. It’s our thing, our time together. Just like riding motorcycles together is our thing. How taking the kids out on the boat on a hot Sunday afternoon is our thing. How going out to eat each weekend with our kids and crew is our thing. How

he was introduced to our famous Sunday night dinner special of nachos, cheese, and ice cream. He still says to this day that he knew he was going to marry me after that! The nachos blew his mind, and to this day, we do nachos and cheese every Sunday night. Our relationship grew as the years went on. He was older than me and sometimes that got tough as I had a curfew, and he didn’t. He could drive, and I couldn’t for the first year and a half of our relationship. There were hurdles, for sure. He was 17, and I was 14. He graduated a year before me, (he was one of the oldest in his class and I was the youngest in mine) which was also really tough. My senior year was awful not having him there with me. Seeing all these other couples holding hands in the hallways and walking each other to class. The year couldn’t go fast enough. A year after graduating, I was engaged to Chris at the age of 18, and we bought a home right below my parents. It was a fixer-upper, but it had land and potential. As most of you know, he proposed to me on Candy Cane Lane on December 19, 2004. We bought our home in May of 2005 and spent the time fixing it before moving in after our wedding, which was on September 17, 2005. One of the happiest days of my life besides the births of our two beautiful kids. Oh, and graduating high school. That’s high up there, too, with “THE BEST DAY EVER.” Our first year of marriage was tough as

sharing new rock and roll songs with each other is our thing — how Sunday night nachos are our thing. How texting each other throughout a workday just saying, “Hi babe! Just want to let you know how appreciative I am of you! I love our love for each other, and I feel it grows stronger each day. Have a wonderful day! Love you lots,” is our thing. (That text was from my husband; it was just sent to me today, actually!) How always working together is our thing. It’s about taking time not only for each other but also with family and friends!! Twenty-five years together, and it never gets old. I love this man so much and our life together. I love our kids more than life itself, and this is all because of young love that turned into falling in love and became true love. All because I changed math classes — THREE times. Two lives joined together, and we had no idea what kind of life we were about to build. I love our past story. I love our present life, and I look forward to our future. I am so thankful for my forever Valentine and my little Valentines, who make me proud to be their momma. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!! I hope your day is filled with love. and taste of a good cup of coffee. Pay attention to all of the opportunities that are presented to you. Opportunities to serve others, to understand, to truly “listen” to the world. Go – The last step in Brother SteindlRast’s attitude of gratitude is to go. To go is to act. It may be simple, such as experiencing the joy of watching a Little League game or a truly great pint of beer. It could also be something difficult, such as fighting for civil rights or working to end poverty. To go is to seize the opportunity and do something with the gift we have been given. While life is made up of many moments/opportunities, they are finite in number, and I encourage you not to squander them.

Stop – To stop is to break life into every little moment. To savor and appreciate the many little things, along with the occasional big event. If you are reading this article, you are obviously alive. You have the ability to read, so you are educated. You very likely have shelter, food, clean water, and electricity. You have these gifts, but more importantly, you have moments — opportunities to experience. Listen – The next step in fostering gratitude is listening. Be quiet. “Listen” with all of your senses. What is going on around you? Even with all the negative things happening in the world, life is extremely rich and full of amazing things. Take it in. Experience the miracle of nature. Spend time catching up with a friend. Savor the smell

appy Valentine’s Day to lovers — especially word-lovers! I’m sure that doesn’t sound too romantic; but you might be surprised at the many love-related terms that permeate our language. In part, this is because so much English derives from Greek and Latin, with both languages offering several base-words for love. Perhaps the best-known of these are am(Latin) and phil- (Greek), which have given
us literally hundreds of English words. Am-, for instance, is found in such common terms as amiable, amorous and paramour, not to mention foreign phrases like mon amour (“my love”) and of course the crooner-classic tune “That’s Amore!” Some of these examples show how amcan also be used in the sense of friend. (For examples: amity, amicable and, in law, an amicus brief.) Since many other languages also lean on Latin, am- has likewise generated well-known foreign terms — like the Spanish amigo and the French mon ami (“my friend”).

little evidence that French folks ever used “egg” as slang for “nothing.” So love in tennis probably comes from the fact that amateurs, playing only out of fondness, would be more likely to score zero points! (My thanks to Merriam-Webster for this info.) I had planned to cover phil- in this column as well, but we’re running low on space, so let’s save that for Valentine’s 2025. I’ll close instead with word-related thoughts on kissing: Somewhat understandably, English offers dozens of slang terms for this entertaining activity: peck, smooch, neck, make out and in texts, an “X” or two. Or three. (Or ten.) Among the more amusing slang synonyms are the British snog, made famous by Louise Rennison’s uproarious novels about
boy-crazy teen Georgia Nicholson — the first of which is titled: Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging. I also love osculate. (Or should I say “love to” … ?) Commonly used as a verb, osculate usually means “to come close” — but it can be used for kiss; in fact, its Latin origin does mean exactly that. May I also throw in canoodle, though that generally involves cuddling and caressing as well. Incidentally, no one is sure of this word’s origin; possibly from “noodle,” says Dictionary.com — though this connection is perhaps best left unexplored in a family newspaper. And last but not least comes another sadly neglected synonym: buss.
I always thought this came from the French bouche, meaning “mouth” (as in embouchure, for you musicians out there). But the Online Etymology Dictionary indicates it is likely imitative of sound, especially since “B” is made with lips. In fact, OED points out that many other languages have a similar-sounding word for kiss, including buz in Spanish and busa in Persian. So pucker up and get your lips ready not only to osculate, but also to tell your love how you feel. Yes, words might seem a nerdy topic; but in terms of romantic expression, they have to be at least as important as kissing, right? OK, I’m not asking for mail on that. But this Valentine’s Day, neither am I suggesting you should keep your mouth shut.

And believe it or not, this little base also gave us enemy! There, the en- is a negative prefix (similar to “in-”), while am has been similarly respelled with an E. That’s also where we get the related term enmity; both words indicate a resounding lack of love. But perhaps the most surprising etymology from am- is amateur — meaning a person who does something out of love, as opposed to professionals, who do it for money. This idea may also be responsible for the odd use of love to mean zero in a tennis score. For years, one prevalent theory insisted that this was an Anglicization of the French l’oeuf, meaning “egg” — which of course resembles the figure 0. However, there is

been wanting to check out or haven’t experienced in a while. A simple break from routine can make for an enjoyable escape, even if you’re only a few miles from home. Schedule a Photoshoot If the last time you had your photo pro-
fessionally taken was on your wedding day or a family vacation, hire a photographer for a couples photo session, and use it as an opportunity to create fun memories together. Many photographers offer mini sessions, which only take 15-30 minutes, leaving time for a night out afterward. For an inexpensive option, have a friend take a few casual pictures or use a selfie stick to help document your date. Cook Dinner Together Restaurants are often booked up on Valentine’s Day, so try something different this year and make a special homecooked meal together. Whether you make a tried-and-true favorite or whip up something new, like a heart-shaped
dish, you’ll bond over the experience while creating a tangible (and hopefully tasty) reward once the oven timer dings. Then dim the lights, play some soft music and light some candles to create a romantic ambience while enjoying dinner together. Go On a Road Trip Take a day — or a weekend — and venture to a destination you haven’t been before on a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway. Even if traveling far away isn’t possible right now, exploring a town or two over allows you to check out new restaurants, stores or other attractions and get out of your comfort zones. Time” and “Sledgehammer”; impressively, the latter knocked “Invisible Touch” — a single by his former band, Genesis — out of number-one on the pop charts. I’ve been a Gabriel fan for decades — both his early solo stuff, and especially those astounding first six Genesis records (1969-74). But the artist hasn’t made an all-new studio album in more than 20 years — and Joseph W. that one (2002’s Up) was so dismal, Smith III I figured his recording career was over.

“hairy drums” — plus a full orchestra of more than 30 musicians. It’s hard to single out a favorite, but I will say the percussion on this record is sensational. Vocals, meanwhile, are provided by several backup singers (including Gabriel’s daughter Melanie), along with Africa’s amazing Soweto Gospel Choir and Sweden’s all-male Orphei Drangar, featuring dozens of tenors and basses. Lyrically, the record is sometimes too New Age-y and pantheistic (especially the title track, which repeatedly insists, “I’m just a part of everything”). But many other tunes make touching pleas for love, patience and kindness (“So Much,” “Road to Joy,” “Playing for Time”). This is particularly true on the last two tracks: “And Still,” a heartfelt tribute to the
Farm Dispersal and Downsizing
singer’s late mother, plus “Live and Let Live,” which offers utterly compelling appeals on the need to forgive (“Release all the shackles one by one; we belong to the burden till it’s gone”). That track, though quiet and not even released yet, was Gabriel’s second-set closer on his recent tour. Indeed, when I saw him last year in Buffalo, nearly half the songs were new and thus not terribly familiar; but the crowd didn’t seem to mind at all — that’s how good this new stuff is. Two other notable features on I/O: After Gabriel released the 12 songs once a month during each full moon in 2023, he finally collected them in CD form and put that out on Dec. 1. The package offers two discs, each with all 12 tunes in a “Bright Side” and a “Dark Side” mix — though it takes an attentive ear to appreciate the subtle differences.
The CD also comes with an attractive booklet featuring carefully selected artwork to accompany each song; according to Gabriel’s liner notes, he hopes this will help the songs “open up a little more” — that the visuals “might allow the listener/viewer a different way in.” Sadly, the booklet does not contain lyrics. Granted, they are readily available online; but even those posted at Gabriel’s own website are not always perfectly accurate. Let me close by confessing that while I raved about So, I still prefer Gabriel’s first solo effort — the one with a rain-spattered blue car on the cover. Offering a vast range of musical styles — including the major hit “Solsbury Hill” and many softer moments that are nicely echoed on I/O — that initial record remains my favorite Gabriel album. I/O is currently running a close second.

Silly me. Released one song at a time last year in support of Gabriel’s world tour, I/O is, quite simply, a masterpiece. With top-shelf lyrics, composition and musicianship, with rich throbbing textures and irresistible pop appeal, this album just keeps sounding better every time you cue it up. Covering nearly 70 minutes, I/O’s 12 tracks range from meditative, piano-driven melodies (highlighting Gabriel’s gorgeous voice) to soaring, joyous, danceable winners that sound like they came right off of So — along with all those other hits. A tireless promoter of world music (just look up WOMAD sometime), Gabriel layers in a wide array of instrumentation: ukelele, charango, mandolin, congas, French horn, saxophone, wine glasses and something called

hanks to the convenience of technology and our modern lifestyles, people in the U.S. are more inactive than ever. Whether we’re sitting behind desks, hunched over laptops all day for work, or lounging around binging our favorite shows, Americans simply aren’t as physically active as we used to be — and that’s a problem. According to the American Heart Association, only about one in five adults and teens get enough exercise to maintain good health.
Physical activity is one of the keys to preventing heart disease which is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Being more active can help all people think, feel and sleep better and perform daily tasks more easily. When you sit for long periods of time, your body doesn’t work as well as it can and actually begins to adapt to the lack of activity in negative ways. You don’t burn as many calories as you would while standing or doing another activity, which can make it harder to stay at a healthy weight. Science has linked being inactive and sitting

The good news is that you can start on the road to good heart health without the need to hit the gym for hours on end or running marathons. Physical activity is anything that moves your body and burns calories. This includes things like walking, climbing stairs, stretching, and yes, even standing instead of sitting. When you begin any activity, do it slowly to avoid injury and don’t get discouraged. Set incremental goals and break up activity into smaller portions of time working your way up to longer sessions. Be thoughtful about your choice of activity. Non-weight bearing exercise, such as swimming or water aerobics, are less stressful to your joints. Doing a variety of activities keeps things interesting and involves different muscle groups. Even the little things can make a big differ-
ence. The recommendations are for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity, but light-intensity activity can offset the effects of being sedentary. Get creative throughout your day to incorporate extra steps and movement; walk to a co-worker’s office instead of sending an email, take standing breaks while working at your desk, pick a parking spot that’s farther from the entrance, choose the stairs over the elevator. If you have young children or grandchildren, make them part of the activity. Hula hoop, jump rope, and dance with them. If your days are packed, consider breaking your workout into 10-minute blocks; the rewards are the same. Home exercise videos can provide a convenient workout or alternative for rainy days. Whatever you do, make it fun. Ask a friend to walk or enjoy a class with you—it’s a great way to stay motivated and satisfy your
craving for social time, too. Beyond regular “exercise workouts”, leading an active lifestyle has been shown to be immensely beneficial to your overall health so make it a point to keep your body in motion. You don’t have to say goodbye to your favorite shows, hit permanent pause of your latest video game quest, or throw out your television and devices, but you do need to be mindful of how much time you spend doing sedentary activities instead of being physically active. too much with higher risk of heart disease. Your heart is a muscle, just like the ones in your arms and legs. The more you use it, the stronger and more efficient it becomes. When you’re active, your blood pumps through your arteries, helping to keep them healthy and functioning well. Regular cardiovascular exercise, the kind that raises your heart rate and makes you breathe heavily, helps improve your quality of life while reducing many of your risks for heart disease. It can: – Lower blood pressure – Lower cholesterol – Reduce blood sugar levels – Help with weight control It’s clear that being more active benefits everyone and helps us live longer, healthier lives, but in our busy lives, what are we supposed to do?

I
t becomes increasingly apparent with each passing day that anti-hunters will do whatever it takes to stop all hunting everywhere and forever. Their efforts are relentless and will only increase over time. They are definitely in it for the long haul. Examples of their efforts are cropping up all across the nation, and while one might think that it is just happening elsewhere, it is only a matter of time until similar efforts are showing up at our own doorsteps. Just last summer, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources instated an order prohibiting the use of traditional lead-based ammunition in all state Scientific and Natural Areas (SNAs) that allow hunting. The ban includes several state parks and other SNAs holding special hunting events. The DNR’s decision was made without any input from any stakeholders, such as hunters and shooters. Thus, no alternative viewpoints were considered. In 2023, New York Assembly Bill 2917 and New York Senate Bill 4099 were introduced that would prohibit competitions or contests in which certain animals are harvested. These types of activities, which are legal and regulated hunting,
are typically directed toward coyotes — similar to the wintertime coyote hunting contests held across Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, at the end of summer last year, a proposed phase-out of lead ammunition use was canceled at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in West Virginia. Immediately, three anti-hunting organizations — The National Wildlife Refuge Association, Friends of Blackwater, and the Sierra Club began an effort to seek legal recourse to keep the proposed phase-out in place. Add to that the ever-expanding list of new laws in the state of California that are a direct attack on hunting, shooting, and gun ownership. If you dismiss this anti-hunting activity because you believe it will never happen here — think again! Anti-hunting efforts are being felt across the board, and there is no limit to the attempts that are made to make hunting more expensive and complicated — all in an effort over time to persuade hunters that hunting has simply become too expensive of a pursuit and slowly reduce the number of active hunters. Anti-hunting groups and individuals play the long game, chipping away bit by bit, doing whatever they can to throw a monkey wrench into the sport and stop hunting altogether. Every legal battle they win and

protect our hunting heritage. The National Wild Turkey Foundation, the National Rifle Association, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club International, Pheasants Forever, the Ruffed Grouse Society and the National Shooting Sports Foundation are all working on our behalf to protect our hunting heritage for generations to come. What can you, as an individual hunter, do? Well, perhaps it is time to consider “Stepping Up to the Plate.” Look over the list above to find one or more organizations to join and support. Get involved in their mission and in their fundraising efforts. Get in touch with your elected officials and pay attention to proposed and upcoming legislation that positively or negatively affects your hunting heritage. Finally, make sure that you project a positive image as a hunter. Like most things, the universal support of hunting can be accurately imagined with a bell curve. There are strong supporters on the one end and anti-hunters on the other end, with the majority of the population right in the middle. We don’t need to try to influence those who are active hunters, and we won’t change the minds of anti-hunters, so we need to focus our attention on educating the majority in the middle. Once aware of the positive influence hunters have on the conservation and protection of wildlife, they will be more apt to oppose the efforts of the anti-hunters.

every bit of anti-hunting legislation they can pass brings them one step closer to their end goal — the end of hunting as we know and enjoy it. The Biden administration has appointed anti-hunters to significant government positions to adversely affect hunting and weaken the strong social base occupied by hunters. As the number of hunters dwindles, so does the power and influence hunters have in assuring hunting for years to come and for future generations as well. There are continual efforts to close vast acreage of public land to hunting and to impose restrictive regulations, especially on ammunition — such as the phase-out of lead ammunition. The banning of lead ammunition and lead shot is all presented under the false premonition that doing so will save the planet! Even anglers are being targeted, as efforts are being made to ban the use of lead for fishing tackle as well. The end goal is to drive up the costs for hunters and anglers, which may not drastically affect those currently pursuing their passions but will (hopefully for the ‘antis’) eventually price would-be hunters from becoming hunters. It’s not just the hunting of elk in Pennsylvania that has grown in popularity, but the simple act of viewing elk has, too. More and more people are making the trip to the northcentral counties just to see the majestic animals. Sure, I was fortunate to hunt elk in our state, but like many others, I enjoy seeing them as well. As a wildlife artist, elk have always been something I enjoy painting, and the painting accompanying this article entitled “Kettle Creek Crossing” was inspired by what I saw when I looked out the window of a cabin I was staying in along Kettle Creek. Even if you don’t want to get into the challenge of trying to acquire a license to hunt, take your camera and head up into some

Former Atlanta Hawks player Jason Terry decided to start wearing the shorts of the next day’s opponent. The ritual required Terry to procure a pair of uniform shorts from each opposing NBA team. Although his network with equipment managers helped him out, it wasn’t foolproof. While playing for Dallas in the 2006 NBA Finals, he had to wear Mavericks shorts before each game because he was unable to get trunks from the opposing Miami Heat. Obviously, that was the reason Miami won the NBA title 4 games to 2. Most baseball players wear batting gloves to absorb some of the shock of making contact with the ball and improve their grip on the bat. A few forego batting gloves for the barehanded approach. Former MLB outfielder Moises Alou had his own ritual for avoiding calluses and hardening the skin on his hands. Don’t try this at home, but he urinated on his hands throughout the season. Longtime New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada also employed this superstition. Such practice may have been mindover-matter as a 2004 study questioned the effectiveness of such a practice, explaining that urea, contained in urine, is a key ingredient is moisturizers that actually soften the skin. To each their own regarding sports rituals and superstitions, but it might be best to avoid Alou and Posada’s routine.

Photo courtesy of Albright Studio Coach was in his element. It was beautiful. I played for Coach White and the Millionaires in the mid-90s. We also had a great
squad my senior year. We were nipped in the State Championship, but Coach White was named the PIAA AAAA Coach of the Year. I had the best seat in the house and still remember my many interactions with Coach. The stories are true. Pete was so detailed. Coach was always prepared. He had everything chronicled to a T. Often; we knew what the other team was doing before they did. My man was the master of motivation. He knew what buttons to push. Pete had a larger-than-life personality. The crazy paisan. The WIZARD of Fourth Street. He feared no one. A legend. Brilliant man. Coach White was my mentor. He helped spark my interest. I worked three summers during college at his Keystone Basketball Camps. I graduated 30 years ago, but Pete would randomly reach out and offer advice.
He was the first to call after a big upset. Or when we were going through a rough patch. He phoned me a few weeks back to talk about an article. I had to explain my candid sense of humor. It made my year. Just a five-minute talk. I could go on and on about how Coach inspired, but he loved ALL his players. No matter where we were on his depth chart. This was so evident on Saturday. You could see it with every fist pump. Props to the 1984 and 1999 Millionaire Basketball teams. 40 and 25 years ago. Kudos to the Williamsport Administration for organizing this event. I had a blast reminiscing and reaching out and sharing tales. It was a great moment. But most importantly, it was so good to see Coach. Never get rid of the MAGIC DOME, but it is time to rename the court. Cheers.

defense. The side middle and go. Amazing talent. A well-oiled machine. Every player had a role. Everyone shared a common goal. The fans were incredible back then. The stands were always packed. Many folks tell me stories about waiting in line for hours just to see them live. The Millionaires were rockstars, and they were treated like kings. It was Deja Vu that Saturday. The crowd was loud, and it felt like we all traveled back. Many players received some props, but Coach Pete White’s ovation was off the charts. My man can still work the stands. Coach came over to say hello to my in-laws, Mike and Diane Coledo, who have been sitting in the same spot for over 40 years. He continued up and down the aisles. Shaking hands. Cracking jokes. Pete gave me a fist bump and mentioned that he saw my son.
