And Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door

There has never been a time when one’s faith has been more important. ere has also never been a time when one’s faith is being tested by fear and division. We witnessed this on many levels this past week.

As we have now sprung ahead into daylight savings time, let’s talk about what is most important on God’s green Earth. e Lenten season’s re ection and preparation leading up to the crucixion and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

For those that may have lost a little faith over the last year, this is a time to recommit yourself and examine your beliefs. e giving up of something during Lent is intended to show personal sacri ce and your commitment to Christianity. It is to be a living example of putting faith ahead of self. However, just because you give up Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or Eggs doesn’t make you a good Christian. It is the learning, practicing, and commitment to God and his Son during the Lenten season that is most important. e giving up of something mortal is only the icing on the cake that you wait until Easter day

to eat.

I always enjoyed my conversations with Father John Manno. He would stress that one’s Lenten obligation could also be volunteering time, money, or e ort within the community — anything done above normal e ort in the name of Jesus Christ to make the world a better place. Most importantly, it has to come from the heart, not be done just to satisfy your Lenten obligation. Father believed that those with the strongest faith would do both — by skipping those sweets and going above and beyond to help mankind.

However, this is a personal choice. It is my thought that the best thing about doing work for the Lord is that if you have failed to this point on what you gave up for Lent, or maybe haven’t made a commitment, there is no better time than the present to re ect on the message of Jesus Christ. Show some love and kindness to make the world a better place in some manner.

If you have fallen away from your faith for whatever reason or maybe never had the opportunity to learn about God’s love shared through his Son Jesus Christ, there is no bet-

ter time than the present. It is the greatest and most important story ever told.

It is up to all of us, not just the clergy of the church, to share the message of Jesus Christ and try to change the world for the better. It will take the love of fellow man to change anything for the good. Most importantly, we can prevent fear from controlling our thoughts and emotions through a strong faith and the understanding of eternal life.

As most of you know, one of the traditions of the Catholic faith is no meat on Fridays. I always looked forward to the di erent cuisine choices this provided. My grandfather, Pappy Maietta o en made salmon cakes or croquettes served with tomato soup. I have a little tip on how to improve this longtime tradition.

My grandfather always used canned salmon, and that’s what I used to carry on the family tradition. In recent years I switched over to fresh salmon, which is more readily available in today’s world.

How do you add the fresh to your salmon cakes or croquettes? Simply use the same amount your recipe calls for in place of the canned. You must cook the fresh salmon or buy precooked. Dab o the excess moisture with a paper towel

and add it into your mix — bake or fry as normal.

If you’re looking to try to make salmon cakes or croquettes for the rst time, just substitute salmon in your favorite crab cake or chicken croquette recipe.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to everyone. Sticking with the food theme, I’m looking forward to another tradition. My mother-in-law, eresa, always makes corned beef and cabbage to celebrate Saint Paddy’s Day. It always puts a smile on my face when I think about it, not only because it’s delicious, but I usually enjoy it while watching the NCAA March Madness basketball.

Saint Patrick’s Day, or the feast of Saint Patrick, began in Ireland in the 17th century. It was started as a celebration to commemorate the arrival of Christianity.

e symbolism of the shamrock as an Irish tradition began with Saint Patrick. e Christian missionary used the young sprig to explain the trilogy, Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. e lush green Irish three-leafed plant provided the perfect trusting point to convert the non-believers to Christianity. Over the course of history, the shamrock has become the most recognizable symbol of Ireland.

Please get out and about and observe Lent and St. Paddy’s Day while enjoying this beautiful spring weather. God Bless America.

I’ve mentioned before that I am not Irish. I am a whole lotta Italian, with a little German sprinkled in for funsies. But alas wee lads and lassies, I don’t see any harm in nding the Irish spirit and having some St. Patrick’s Day fun! But before you don your green clothes and wish on shamrocks, let’s review our history of St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the h century. e Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the a ernoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink, and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

Saint Patrick, who lived during the h century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.

In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture: Perhaps the most wellknown legend of St. Patrick is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.

According to history.com, legend has it that Patrick stood on an Irish hillside

and delivered a sermon that drove the island’s serpents into the sea. While it’s true that the Emerald Isle is mercifully snake-free, chances are that’s been the case throughout human history. Water has surrounded Ireland since the end of the last glacial period, preventing snakes from slithering over; before that, it was blanketed in ice and too chilly for the cold-blooded creatures. Scholars believe the snake story is an allegory for St. Patrick’s eradication of pagan ideology.

Since around the ninth or 10th century, people in Ireland have been observing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick on March 17. e rst St. Patrick’s Day parade actually took place in America. A St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601, in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. e parade, and a St. Patrick’s Day celebration a year earlier were organized by the Spanish Colony’s Irish vicar Ricardo Artur.

More than a century later, homesick Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched in New York City on March 17, 1772, to honor the Irish patron saint. Enthusiasm for the St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York City, Boston and other early American cities only grew from there.

In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a spiritual and religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in

1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use interest in St. Patrick’s Day to drive tourism and showcase Ireland and Irish culture to the rest of the world.

Today, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide. However, those of us in North America seem to make our celebrations more extra than the rest of the world.

And if you are looking to get out and celebrate, here are some St. Paddy’s weekend events to help keep you busy.

One80 kicks o the weekend at Hull’s Landing at 9:30 p.m.

You can head over to New Trail Brewing on Sunday for a pint and some Irish music! Celtic Wood and Wires will be playing from 3-5 p.m.

ey are a four-member acoustic band playing songs and tunes from Ireland, Scotland & a bit of Appalachian.

e Valley Inn is hosting a St. Paddy’s Day tribute on Saturday, featuring the music of Nirvana by Aberdeen, Alice in Chains by Social Parasite, and the Ramones by the Cretins. Music kicks o at 8 p.m., and there is a $5 cover.

to head to Williamsport High School for their production of “Pippin.” e show is set to hit the stage beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, March 15th, with a matinee performance scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, March 16th

e Watson Inn says everyone’s a wee bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! “ at’s why we’ll be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.!” Come in and grab some of your favorite Irish dishes like corned beef hash, beef stew, beer cheese, blarney fries, shepherd’s pie and more! ey will have two rounds of live music with Ricky Koons from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and then Coast Two Coast Electric Trio from 2 p.m.-5 p.m.

And of course, in true St. Paddy’s Day tradition, the Shamrock will be serving their famous corned beef on rye on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

So get your green on, and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day — but remember. Celebrate safely. No green beer and driving. And much like I reminded you with the Super Bowl, St. Paddy’s Day is on Sunday. You are not as young as you used to be. You have to go to work on Monday. No, your boss isn’t going to believe that you suddenly came down with the ‘ u.’

How to Style Overalls

The reasons for mom’s smile: A staff who treats her like family. Delicious meals and attention to nutritional needs. Engaging ways to stay strong. The support she needs and so much more.

ow that spring has sprung, you may be starting to unpack warmer weather clothes or at least are thinking about your spring style. Pastels and orals are springtime staples and work well for standard spring events like Easter or weddings and graduations. But for a more casual approach to spring style, I’ve been thinking about overalls. Typically, overalls are associated with autumn, but they can easily work for the transition from winter to spring and into early summer. Overalls became popular with women during World War II as they entered the manufacturing sector. e denim-bib style has evolved into an easy-wearing wardrobe staple that can be quite versatile with layers and rendered in unexpected fabric.

Here’s a rundown of some overalls to consider this spring and how to style them for fashionable e ect.

You can’t go wrong with a classic, and Levi’s has you set with their Vintage Women’s Overalls in three di erent washes. Lean into the weekend vibes of this piece and wear it with a striped t-shirt, sneakers,

and a baseball cap to work out in the yard or to run errands. For a more budget-friendly option, check out Old Navy’s Baggy Wide-Leg Jean Overalls for a roomier t with all of the standard elements of adjustable buckled straps, chest pockets, and buttons at the hip. Again, keep the styling simple and casual for an easy-breezy springtime look.

If you like denim but are looking for something with a bit more character this spring, look to ree Bird Nest’s High Hopes Slouchy Pocket overalls. ese oversized overalls are chock full of bohemian panache with their relaxed t and distressed detailing. Coming in blue, black, and patchworked washed denim, you can wear these with a rufe-sleeved blouse and metallic sandals for some feminine air. Or lean towards a more rustic style with a fringed boot and printed tank top. I also love the idea of wearing a bralette top or cropped sweater underneath a looser t overall for sunny, relaxed days.

boots here on chillier spring days. Corduroy isn’t for everyone, but you can still seek out some alternative materials for overalls, like seersucker, which is an essential spring and summer fabric. Trying to nd authentic seersucker overalls that aren’t meant for toddlers can be a challenge. Walmart has striped Summer Boho Bib Overalls that have a seersucker feeling and come in di erent color stripes besides the expected blue and white. is one-piece can work on its own with some mules or layered with a breezy blouse and clogs. If you’re in the market for something a bit more androgynous, then there’s Dickies’ Hickory Stripe Boyfriend Fit Bib Overalls. ese bibs can be worn with a t-shirt and rainboots for outside chores or crocheted top and Birkenstock-style sandals for a picnic.

No matter the style or material, overalls should be comfortable and easy to wear.

Even though we are headed into warmer days, don’t sleep on corduroy overalls for spring. Toad & Co’s Scouter Cord Overall is made from lightweight organic cotton that’s surprisingly breathable and rendered in a ne wale cord that pairs well with a annel and boots for a springtime hike. For something a bit quirkier, there’s Cider’s Ditsy Floral Corduroy jumpsuit. And while it’s titled as a jumpsuit, this has straps and an open back like a standard overall. is comes in blue, brown, and green oral prints and works great with a bodysuit in a contrasting shade. Whether it’s the rugged edge of classic denim or the so ness of jersey cotton, comfort and style should be paramount when incorporating overalls into your spring style. I realize overalls aren’t for everyone. Women of a certain age may nd this style a bit juvenile, which they can be especially for dressier events. Remembering Ed Ott

By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

With deep sadness, area sports fans learned last week of the death of Lycoming County sports legend Ed Ott, remembered as a standout catcher on the 1979 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirate team. He was also a legendary athlete at Muncy High School, excelling in both football and wrestling. I had the pleasure of interacting with and meeting Ed when he spoke at the local chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) meeting held in September 2022 at the James V. Brown Library. He was an interesting and engaging speaker who le the 60plus people in attendance in awe and wonder. I remember how tickled he was that the Williamsport Crosscutters had given away a bobblehead of him earlier that year. Some of the people at the meeting had him sign their bobbleheads of him.

hard to learn this new position, and it worked out for me,” Ed said.

It certainly did. Before this year’s Hot Stove Banquet, Kent Tekulve told me that Ed was “an excellent handler of pitchers and a leader behind the plate.”

Ed was important to the Buccos’ “We Are Family” 1979 championship team. He alternated with young Steve Nicosia behind the plate and helped to mentor Nicosia.

Ed told us that the ’79 team was a very special group of guys and that Willie “Pops” Stargell’s veteran leadership was key to the team’s becoming known as “We Are Family.”

“Pops made us believe in ourselves, and whenever we got down, he li ed us up,” Ed said. “ at team, at times, was li ed on the back of Stargell and his bat.”

One game in particular, that season epitomized the spirit of Ed and that great 1979 team.

He told us about his interesting baseball journey from out elder to catcher. He said, “I was never going to get a shot with the Pirates as an out elder with guys with names such as Stargell, Zisk, Parker, and Oliver, so I was asked to become a catcher, and I worked

“We were playing the Phillies in a game in August and were only up 1 1/2 games ahead of Montreal in the Eastern Division and were down in that game 8-0,” Ed told our SABR group, “when ‘Pops’ saw us all holding our heads down, he got angry and told us not to quit and that we needed to ght back and score some runs. Well, we started to come back,

and I got a crack at the Phils’ ace reliever, Tug McGraw. Chuck Tanner was going to pinch hit for me, but I begged him to let me hit and le me in the lineup. I hit a hanging curveball for a grand slam home run to give us a 14-11 win. at win gave us momentum and helped send us on our way to the championship.”

In the 1979 World Series, Ed scored the winning run in Game Two and hit 4 for 12.

But Ed is perhaps best known for an incident with Mets’ in elder Felix Millan on August 12, 1977.

“I was trying to break up a double play and had a hard take-out slide into Mets second baseman Felix Millan,” Ed told our group. “Apparently, Felix didn’t like it much and threw his right hand into me with the ball still in his hand. Boy, did that make me mad, so I picked him up and slammed him to the turf. He ended up separating his shoulder, and I was thrown out of the game. I had to have a police escort coming out of Shea Stadium, and I got a few death threats as well.”

benched him. I told him, when you prove that you care about playing and hustle, I’ll let you back in the lineup,” Ed told us. “Barry learned his lesson, and I never had another problem with him. He played very well for me.”

Ed Ott gained a respected reputation as a ballplayer’s ball player, and I think he appreciated that.

I would like to close with some excerpts from Grantland Rice’s poem “Game Called” that I think apply well to Ed.

Game Called. Where in the golden light the bugle rolled the reveille.

e shadows creep where night falls deep, and taps has called the end of play. e game is done, the score is in, the nal cheer and jeer have passed. But in the night, beyond the ght, the player nds his rest at last.

“One time, Barry didn’t hustle like I thought he should have, so I

Game Called. Upon the eld of life the darkness gathers far and wide, the dream is done, the score is spun that stands forever in the guide. Nor victory, nor yet defeat is chalked against the player’s name.

Decorate Your Way to St. Patrick’s Day Four DIY Projects With an Irish Flair

Pairing Shepherd’s pie and potato soup with green pints and Irish delights are sure re signs of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Food and drink may be the stars of the show, but a little festive ambiance can transport guests from your dining room table to the streets of Dublin. A few seasonal touches are all it takes to complement a menu of corned beef and cabbage. Consider these DIY decorations for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day party.

Set a St. Paddy’s Mood - Show o your holiday spirit for all to see with a homemade wreath that gives your front door a perfect welcoming touch. Cut shamrock shapes out of green construction paper then glue together, edge to edge, to your desired size. Punch a hole in the top shamrock and run string or ribbon through to hold up your work of art.

e Gi of Green - Lend a helping hand to guests who forget their green with shamrock-shaped pins they can attach to shirts or hats. Wooden shamrocks tend to work best

with small pins glued to the back. Arrange these easy party favors near the door so your friends and neighbors can grab one as they enter.

A Homemade Pot o’ Gold - Send guests chasing the rainbow and reward their adventures with canning jars lled with candies wrapped in gold. Simply spray paint jars green, ll with goldwrapped candies and place in various gathering areas for easy-to-reach treats.

Custom Cups - Upgrade boring drinkware with a leprechaun look. Find green cups (plastic or paper) and wrap with black ribbon using hot glue to secure. For a nal touch, add a gold sticker as the belt buckle. (Family Features & eLivingtoday.com, photos courtesy of UnSplash.)

Consistency. Consistency is a new word in my life that I never thought would have so much meaning for me. I can give the word consistency pretty much all of the credit for my weight loss and maintenance of that 65-pound loss. And, of course, the good Lord above!

Without consistency, I couldn’t have done it. Consistency is key!

at and mindset and dedication.

e three of them, together with God helping you through it all, is a recipe for

success no matter what you set out to accomplish.

You don’t need or want to be perfect. Consistency is more than perfection.

Perfection can hinder us and cause us to be hard on ourselves! We are going to use exercise, for instance. Being perfect to some people is exercising ve days a week, killing yourself in exercise for the rst two months, and not missing a single day. But a er those two months, most start declining because things in life

come up and you expect too much from yourself. en, when it drops down to two days a week, you just give up because you think that to have exercise be a bene t to you, you need to work ve times a week for an hour a pop, and if you aren’t sweating, it isn’t doing anything. So, by month three, you just completely stop. ( is was literally me years ago when I was at my heaviest.)

am proud of myself. Two days a week is totally doable with a busy lifestyle and is absolutely bene cial!!

Exercising every two days is a great schedule to follow. Say Monday, ursday, and Sunday. en, the following week, it would be Wednesday and Saturday. Now, obviously, I am not an athlete or training to be a bodybuilder. is is a totally di erent situation with training. I am just talking about a normal person who wants to live a healthier lifestyle.

I completely changed my mindset and became dedicated to my health journey. Not only is it consistent with exercise, but it is consistent with meal prep, good sleep, high step count, lots of water, and weighing in EVERY. SINGLE.

Now, take a consistent person. ey work out two days a week the entire year for thirty to forty minutes. Some weeks, they may get three or four days in if they have a less busy week, or one day a week here and there due to vacations, sickness, or just life in general! e person who consistently works out all year, even twice a week, has just exercised one hundred and four days out of the year. ey kept consistent all year because they didn’t beat themselves up if something came up and they couldn’t exercise. I tell myself two days a week because it’s realistic. Most weeks, I do get three. But if I tell myself I need to do more and fail that week, I feel like a failure! If I tell myself twice a week and get at least that or more, I

FRIDAY for YEARS!

Weighing in every Friday and writing it down has given me data that has been a huge help on my journey. I can ip back to four years ago and say, “Dang girl, you have come a long way.” Or I can return to last spring and say, “Hey, you are down ve pounds from last year!” Five pounds may not sound like a lot in a year, but you know what? I maintained PLUS lost. at is a victory for me. I love to cook, and I eat in moderation. I never feel deprived. I love where my calories are and that I don’t have to starve myself to see results. ey may not be HUGE drops, but they are my

drops. ey are my rst time EVER losing weight and keeping it o for years and years. It’s been incredible, and I have learned so much by investing in my self-knowledge through listening to tness podcasts, following tness coaches on social media, and going through tness and nutrition school myself to become a coach.

It may take another few years to hit my goal, and I’m just ne with that. It’s not a race. I didn’t put on tons of weight in a few months, and I don’t expect it to come o in a few months. I’m still learning and growing from it all and am happy with my progress. I can guarantee I will reach that goal I set out for ve years ago, but I never set a time for myself. I knew I would get there when I got there.

Whether you want to lose weight, exercise, read a good book, pay o that debt, use face cream daily, start a garden, or whatever it may be in your life that you think you will start and give up, just stay consistent and don’t be so hard on yourself. Allow yourself grace. You’ll get there. Slowly but surely, you will nish that book. You will lose that weight. You will have that beautiful garden or glowing skin. Once you learn consistency is KEY to success, it’s a total game changer.

Top 10 Happiness Research Insights from 2023 – Part 1

veryone ultimately wants to be happy, even if they are unsure how to go about it. e disconnect is usually what we believe will make us happy versus what will make us happy. e researchers at the Greater Good Science Center located at the University of California at Berkeley hope to take some guesswork out of the pursuit of happiness. According to its website, the center studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being and teaches skills that foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society. Kiran Newman and the rest of the UC Berkley team looked through the research from 2023 that was nominated from their network of over 400 researchers. Some studies tackled some of society’s big questions, while other insights reinforced the idea that compassion is especially important during trying times. e hope is that the following insights might help us understand where we’ve been on our happiness journey and help us better prepare for where we are going in 2024.

1. World happiness rankings need to account for culture. We’ve heard it before: Scandinavians are the happiest people on the planet. Year a er year, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland (technically not in Scandinavia) rank highest for “Happiest County in the World,” while the US drops lower and lower. How can this be? While I do believe we live in a great country, we honestly still have some work to do. OK, back to our friends above the Arctic Circle. Yes, they’ve got some good things going on over there. Prosperity, good healthcare, clean cities, great public transportation, and generally happy people, or so they say in the annual surveys. But is that the whole picture when it comes to happiness? e thing is, people around the world de ne happiness di erently. When researchers started asking about happiness beyond the self and included family members and what the ideal person in their society was like, the answers were enlightening. For example,

some countries place a high value on relationships and interdependence. e traditional happiness surveys, however, ask questions that are largely focused on personal happiness and satisfaction. So, have the rankings been biased all along? Researchers believe more work needs to be done to understand cultural di erences concerning happiness so that we may better understand how di erent cultures de ne it.

2. Happiness research is improving. Researchers are changing their methods a bit, and that is helping to produce more reliable data. A couple of signi cant things are happening to improve methodology. First, researchers are more o en using pre-registration, which asks researchers to declare their statistical analysis plans ahead of time. is helps keep the researchers from changing their methods to produce more statistically signi cant results, thus upping their odds of publication. Second, researchers are using bigger participant pools. For example, a small study with 25 participants is less statistically valid than a study with 1,000 people.

3. People have the ability to be more intellectually humble. Intellectual humility is an interesting term. Certainly, humility is something we could use a little bit more of. It is also something that research

has shown can be cultivated. Intellectual humility is basically our ability to admit we’re wrong. Yes, this can be tough at times, but we humans are not as rigid as we once thought. Science backs up the idea that we can change and be more exible in our thinking and personal growth.

4. Kind acts can ease anxiety and depression. Have you ever heard of the idea that you should help someone else when you are feeling blue? Well, according to well-being researchers, it works. A study in the Journal of Positive Psychology looked at three groups of people with moderate anxiety and depression. One group performed three acts of random kindness two days a week. e second group planned a social activity two days a week. e third group kept a “ oughts Record” where they recorded distressing thoughts and ways to deal with them. All three groups showed similar results in reducing their depressive symptoms, except the random kindness group showed a signi cantly greater social connectedness. Social connectedness just happens to be one of the pillars of wellbeing and overall happiness. It pays to be kind.

In the second installment of this article, we will explore the remaining insights, including thoughts on compassion, gratitude, and caring for your co-workers.

Marching Toward April: Abiding the Madness … Till Easter!

As we proceed through “March Madness” toward a strange Sunday-Monday conjunction of Easter and April Fools’, your Weird Words writer is compiling a suitable pair of vocabulary lists: one on fools & madness — and then, more positively, on the death and

resurrection of Christ.

In the meantime, here are 10 more oddball terms to tide us over until then:

Claggy (KLAG-ee, adj.) – Sticky, gummy; thick and muddy. According to the voluminous Collins English Dictionary, the root word is clag, which means simply “mud” — and also (as a verb) “to stick.”

Eryngo (uh-RING-go, noun) – Carrot-like plant which, in the authorita-

tive words of Merriam-Webster, bears “elongate spinulose-margined leaves and owers in dense bracted heads.” And thus, as so o en when looking up a word, we have to dig out two more de nitions: spinulose = having tiny spines (from spinule); and bract = a specialized leaf, usually located at the base of a ower.

Merriam-Webster also points out that one marine species of eryngo (called “sea holly”) was formerly employed as an aphrodisiac — which begs the question: Just who gured out the plant could be used that way? Seems like a lot of trial-and-error to me….

Furcula (FUR-kyuhluh, noun) – e clavicle-bone from bird — i.e., “wishbone.” Related to fork, which describes its split shape. e tiny insect called a springtail has an external furcula that helps it leap into the air (hence its name).

Gutser (GUT-ser, noun) – Australian slang for a person who eats too much, or too greedily. According to Collins, in Australia and New Zealand to “come a gutser” means to fall down heavily, or “to fail through error or misfortune.”

Oganesson (oh-GAN-uh-sun, noun)

– A “superheavy,” man-made chemical element, synthesized in Russia in 2002 — under the supervision of nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian, for whom it was named; its atomic number is 118 on the periodic table.

According to Wikipedia, oganesson is one of only two elements named for someone who was alive at the time — the other being seaborgium (106), for chemist Glenn T. Seaborg. As the latter passed away in 1999, Oganessian (now 90) is the only living person for whom an element was named.

Rigadoon (rig-uh-DOON, noun) –Like most folks, I’ve known the capitalized term Brigadoon for years — in my case, since my high school drama club staged that Lerner & Loewe musical way back in the 1970s.

But I never saw this common noun till recently, when I encountered it while thumbing through one of my many dictionaries; there, it was de ned it as “an old-fashioned lively dance performed by one couple” — or alternately, “the music for it.”

(From the idiosyncratic Winston Dictionary, which was given to me by a friend, and which

is so old that its appendix of “Persons and Places” has Hitler as still alive!)

Smir (SMEER, noun) – Scottish term for drizzly rain. Alternately spelled smirr or smur, it can also be a verb. Of uncertain origin; possibly related to the Dutch smoor, meaning “mist.”

Summat (SUM-it, pron.) – Our rst pronoun in nearly 40 columns, this is British slang for “something.” I came upon it a couple of weeks ago while watching e Full Monty — a lm whose dialog is so heavily cockney that I had to use subtitles, which is how I noted this unusual term.

Twicer (TWICE-ur, noun) – A person who does something twice — especially a two-time loser; also Australian slang for a crook or a liar.

Wicopy (WIK-uh-pee, noun) – A synonym for either of two American plants — a tough-barked shrub called leatherwood, or a species of linden also known as basswood

For our forthcoming columns on insanity and Christ, I’ll try not to “come a gutser”; that would be summat awful — especially if I did it both times and thus became a twicer Ugh.

our dog may be one of your best friends, but that bond doesn’t happen overnight. Investing in quality one-on-one time can have a big impact on the bond you build with your four-legged companion.

Another way to build trust through behavior training is establishing regular routines. Giving your dog a clear set of expectations helps build mutual trust. You can create routines around the key milestones of each day, such as mealtimes, walks and bedtime.

Teaching your dog obedience isn’t just about eliminating undesirable behaviors. Training allows you to clearly communicate your expectations to your dog. It also builds your dog’s con dence through positive feedback received a er mastering a command or new trick. Most dogs thrive on meeting their owners’ expectations, so consistent commands they can recognize and follow help deepen your connection.

Some pets love bath time; others avoid it at all costs. Either way, you can make the experience more rewarding for you and your pet if you use it as an opportunity to spend some quality time together and shower your pet with extra a ection. Many pets are especially sensitive to grooming near their eyes, but keeping the eyes clean and free of dirt and buildup may help reduce the risk of infection, reduce tear stains and support your dog’s eye health. Consider options like Project Watson eye wash for dogs, which comes in an easyto-use bottle with a tip that allows for a steady stream of solution to use alone or by soaking a clean washcloth. Made with naturally inspired, high-quality ingredients, the eye wash is

Between grooming sessions, you can also clean your dog’s eyes with eyelid wipes. e wipes, which are part of the Project Watson line of dog care products developed by the experts at Bausch + Lomb and evaluated by veterinarians, are formulated with micellar technology that cleanses and hydrates around the eyes while helping remove excess buildup associated with irritated, dry eyes. e gentle formula is paraben free, pH-balanced and fragrance free, made to mimic the ingredients found in natural tears and provide a soothing, gentle cleaning.

Exercise

Your dog needs daily exercise, just like you. Make your workouts do double duty by taking your dog along for a walk or jog. Just be sure to match your workout level to your pet’s abilities; just like humans, dogs need to build up endurance before tackling an extended route. Also be mindful

of the terrain and ensure your pet’s paws are safe from potential risks like sharp or abrasive surfaces and extreme heat or cold.

Down Time

While dogs need plenty of practical attention and structure, some of the best bonding comes from letting loose and simply enjoying interacting with your pooch. at might mean wrestling with a favorite toy, throwing a ball or just snuggling on the couch with plenty of petting and scratches. County Hall Corner The Self-Inflicted Apocalypse

This week is the fourth anniversary of an event that should get more attention. The COVID-19 shutdowns began in Pennsylvania on March 13, 2020. At the time, I thought how appropriate it was that it was Friday the 13th. Believe it or not, there is a word for the fear of this day: Paraskevidekatriaphobia. The strangeness of this word fits the strangeness that began that day.

It was the weekend of the annual West Branch Builders Show in Williamsport.

For over 60 years, this event has had exhibitors coming from all over the state, with thousands attending. But in 2020, it was canceled. Governor Wolf declared that we must all hunker down and avoid personal interaction for the next two weeks to “flatten the curve” of the disease, which meant the builders’ show had to go. In Governor Wolf’s defense, he was following what other governors and even President Trump had proposed. The mantra was to “follow the science” that was being proposed by experts to avoid human interaction due to the threat of a national pandemic.

Yet, this “science” was not as settled as it was projected. In 2005, President George W. Bush put together a group of scientists to develop a national strategy for a pandemic. It was led by Dr. D. A. Henderson, perhaps the most highly revered epidemiologist of the 20th century. Henderson didn’t trust computer models as they couldn’t possibly anticipate the complexity of human behavior. He stated, “There is simply too little experience to predict how a 21st-century population would respond.” Henderson felt that the worst thing officials could do was to overreact. President Bush was pushing for strategy, and the final paper of these scientists concluded, “Experience has shown that communities faced with epidemics or other adverse events re-

spond best and with the least anxiety when the normal social functioning of the community is least disrupted.”

So, fifteen years before, the experts had figured out that if everyone kept their

heads, even if many were getting sick, the best way forward was to keep on course as best as possible. And, of course, this course was ignored. Dr. Fauci and other public health “experts” found themselves as media rock stars, and the more they emphasized the level of the crisis and the need for isolation, the more screen time they got.

And what was the result? The ‘science’ that was to save lives likely did more harm than good. Journalists Joe Nocera and Bethany McLean put all this together in a recent bestselling book, The Big Fail: What the Pandemic Revealed About Who America Protects and Who It Leaves Behind. A Kirkus Review noted, “In their latest eye-opening collaboration, Nocera and McLean document countless mistakes and their consequences in a ‘series of cascading dominoes.’”

Yes, President Trump’s Operation Warp Speed did indeed accelerate the production and distribution of a vaccine. However, Trump also followed Dr. Anthony Fauci, who fired back against criticism toward him, declaring, “Science and truth are being attacked.” Yet, Fauci also admitted to MSNBC’s Chuck Todd that his coronavirus guidance did change. “As you get more information, it’s essential that you change your opinion because you’ve got to be guided by the science and the current data.” In Fauci’s world, he is right even when he is wrong.

But the science certainly seemed to be motivated by more than just science. The most impressive study was

the Great Barrington Declaration, drafted by three renowned epidemiologists from Harvard, Stanford, and Oxford. It has since been signed by 939,000 scientists from 40 countries around the world. They noted almost immediately the danger of the shutdowns, stating, “current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health.”

Sadly, they were exactly right. Repercussions of the government’s reaction to COVID resulted in social, economic, and educational disruptions that may resonate for decades to come, not just in the United States but across the world.

Hats off to Lycoming County Commissioners Scott Metzger, Tony Mussare, and Rick Mirabito, Director Matt McDermott, and many other department heads who helped minimize the impacts in our area during those dark days. An entire book could be written about what was going on behind the scenes by the county officials through 2020. Suffice to say, they did the best they could.

It must have been intoxicating for leaders like Governor Tom Wolf to have in the palm of their hand the power to control virtually every aspect of travel, commerce, education, all the way down to even worship services. As the British historian Lord Acton once quoted, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Hopefully, when the next health crisis comes along (and it will), our state and national officials will not let it go to their head and show more common sense than nonsense.

Library Opening at Montgomery Attracts Crowd

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

Visitors to the Montgomery Public Library building at the o cial opening yesterday totaled 225, according to the o cial registry kept by the recording secretary, Hilda Piatt, the assistant librarian. Mrs. Benjamin Shelley reports that out of this number, no less than 100 used the library on the opening day, taking out books from the 3,000 volumes available for the use of the public. A special sum of money has been set aside and will make possible the purchase of books every month. Not only is Montgomery justly proud of its new library facility located on the third oor of the attractive re-modeled building once the old First National Bank but of the new Red Cross facilities on the second oor.

Four Signs it’s Time to Replace Your Tires

Icant investment, which underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance. Maintenance is more than just tending to what’s under the hood. Tires also require drivers’ attention, as aging, damaged tires pose a safety risk that also compromise vehicle performance. Tires are easily overlooked, but the following are four signs tires need to be replaced.

n ation has been a hot topic for several years, as the cost of everything from groceries to gas to housing has increased considerably since 2019. Cars are no exception to that phenomenon, and anyone who has purchased a new car over the last half decade likely experienced some sticker shock when they started their search for a new vehicle. Data from Kelley Blue Book indicates the average cost of a new car was $37,590 in 2019. By 2023, the average cost had risen to $47,899. at marks an increase of more than 27 percent in a four-year period. Cars are indeed a signi -

the tread and around the circumference. If the tread is at or below 2⁄32 of an inch, the tire should be replaced.

2. Bulges, gouges or cracks: de ated tire bulge at the sides, and that can compromise the safety of everyone in the vehicle. Bulges occur when air gets between the inner liner and outer rubber layers, which can happen a er hitting a curb or driving over a sizable pothole. A gouge or cut that is deeper than the outer layer of the tire also necessitates replacement.

3. Poor grip: Drivers may be able to feel certain tire problems, including poor grip, while driving. In such instances, tires may feel as though they are slipping. e tire experts note that low tread can reduce tire traction and cause wheels to slip, which may be more noticeable when accelerating from a stop or driving on wet roads. Drivers who feel their tires are slipping can test the tread and replace tires that are low.

4. Vibration: Vibration is another is-

sue drivers may feel rather than see. And identifying the cause requires noting where the vibrations are felt. A feeling of vibration or thumping that feels like it’s coming from under the seats may indicate the tires are not balanced. Depending on where that teenager lives, he or she is likely to secure a license between the ages of 15 and 18. e next natural step is nding a vehicle to get around town. A teenager’s rst ride may be a family car that is not used frequently by parents or a vehicle that is shared among the household. Over time, juggling usage can prove di cult, and parents Considerations for Your Young Driver’s First Vehicle

and children may decide the moment has come to shop for an additional vehicle. These guidelines can make car shopping for young drivers go smoothly.

Budget

Cost is a concern when buying a vehicle. Calculate how much the teen will be contributing and how much parents may be putting into the equation. Check with the financing department to determine if a teen is eligible to take out a loan. If not, a loan might need to be co-signed by an adult. Insurance costs also must be considered. Certain vehicles are more expensive to insure

than others, so finding one that won’t break the bank to insure is a good idea.

Safety

The automotive experts at AAA note that teenagers are among the riskiest drivers due to their inexperience, so it’s important to choose a vehicle that gets high safety marks. Features to look for include automatic emergency braking, side-crash prevention systems, lane departure, blind spot alerts, and other accident prevention options. Midsize sedans are safe and easy enough to maneuver, and they have shorter braking distances than most SUVs. New or preowned

Both new and preowned vehicles have various pros and cons. It may be difficult for a teen to afford a new car and make monthly payments, but new cars often come with warranties and other protections. Preowned cars may not have all of the safety features of newer vehicles, but many are certified preowned, which gives buyers some peace of mind in case service work is needed. Also, parents may not be so worried about teens dinging up a used vehicle rather than one right out of the showroom.

Reliability

It may be tempting to purchase the

least expensive vehicle, but price should not always be the deciding factor. Reliability should be a major consideration. Check that the vehicle (if purchasing a preowned) has not been in any major accidents that necessitated extensive repairs. Also, certain brands are known to stand the test of time better than others. Research makes and models through Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book to determine which vehicles boast such a reputation.

These are just some of the variables to consider when helping young drivers choose their first vehicle.

Why Regular Car Washes are Important

Taking care of a vehicle involves more than just maintaining the equipment under the hood.

ere are a number of steps involved in keeping a car or truck in top form, and that includes regular car washes.

Car washes keep a vehicle shiny and clean, which can help it look good while sitting in the driveway or cruising the highway. However, regular car washes are more than cosmetic.

high salt corrosion rates. Unless it’s washed o frequently, salt can take its toll, leading to damage.

Improve fuel e ciency: Drivers have felt pain in their wallets at the fuel pump in recent years. Dirty cars may be less aerodynamic and less fuel-e cient as a result. Keeping a car clean may improve its fuel e ciency.

Maintain the interior: Car washes are not only about the

exterior. Keeping a clean and tidy interior can help improve the air quality inside of the vehicle and prolong the life of upholstery, mats and interior components.

Car washes should be a routine part of vehicle maintenance. Professional car washes tend to be more eco-friendly than washing a car at home, so drivers are urged to investigate their service plans and features.

It was in 1900 that the very rst federal law to protect game, e Lacey Act, was passed, and in 1929, the Migratory Bird Conservation Act was passed, furthering e orts to protect wildlife. While both of these laws were bene cial to wildlife, neither addressed the issue of funding conservation e orts. Finally, in 1937, the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act was passed, and it established the guidelines to fund future conservation e orts through a tax on sporting arms and ammunition. (It might be interesting to note that previously, there had been a tax on sporting arms and ammunition that was used to pay for World War I debts).

Initially, the act was written to raise money for state wildlife agencies. e money is collected from the various manufacturers of rearms, ammunition, and hunting equipment, who pay a 10% to 11% federal excise tax on those goods. For states to receive these federal allocations, they must pay a 25% match of nonfederal funding. Most states,

including Pennsylvania, use money generated by hunting license sales to pay the matching funds. en, the state agencies use the funds, through grants, to pay for conservation initiatives such as habitat restoration, restocking programs, huntereducation programs, and public land access and acquisitions. As such, the Pittman-Robertson Act was the rst sustainable source of federal revenue for state wildlife management in the United States. Additionally, in the 50s and 60s, the late Fred Bear (a well-known and well-respected member of the archery business) watched the act’s success and suggested that the archery industry could also contribute, thus making a good system better by being part of it. Starting in 1972, archery equipment such as bows and arrows and accessories that attached to bows were subjected to the federal excise tax.

Since the inception in 1937 of the Pittman-Robertson Act, hunters have thus generated through their purchases over $25 Billion for conservation when accounting for in ation, according to the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in

addition to the $900 million generated from state licenses, tags, and permits. Funds generated from the sales of archery equipment exceeded $1 Billion in 2022. Consequently, animal populations that were once threatened or in danger of extinction, such as bison, beavers, elk, deer, pronghorn, wild turkeys, and wood ducks, are now ourishing. At one point, bison populations were reduced to only about 300 wild bison roaming in North America in the 1860’s. Still, today, more than 30,000 wild bison roam the continent, and an additional 400,000 bison live in captive herds.

When European settlers rst arrived in America, they cleared the land for farming, cut trees for home and shipbuilding, and began hunting and trapping for the European commercial fur and meat markets. Habitat was lost, and unregulated hunting and trapping began reducing various wildlife populations, such as the bison and beaver. As the human population expanded westward, animals were o en overharvested. Market hunting killed o wildlife that was sold for meat and hides, and some species were slaughtered to near extinction. en, in the late 1800s, people began to recognize the need to better conserve our natural resources, including wildlife. Americans began to

realize that the unrestricted killing of wildlife for commercial use in the food and fur market was resulting in the destruction of irreplaceable resources. Many state wildlife agencies were established in the late 1800s, but their focus was on law enforcement, sh hatcheries, and sh stocking. Initially, there were no e orts to address conservation, no biologists to conduct research, and very little land acquisition for refuges, sanctuaries, or wildlife management areas. It was the passage of the Lacey Act in 1900, the Migratory Bird Conservation Act in 1929, and then the Pittman-Robertson Act in 1937 that set in motion today’s growing e orts in the eld of conservation of all game and non-game wildlife species.

As hunters and rearms owners, it is important to be aware that the success of wildlife conservation is largely due to the nancial contributions we each make when purchasing rearms, ammunition, equipment, and archery equipment. is is critical information to share the next time you are in a discussion with someone who might lean toward a stance of anti-hunting or be against the private ownership of rearms. Educating folks who are not members of the hunting community or are not currently owners of rearms as to the massive nancial support of conservation by hunters and shooters will cast a favorable light on who we really are.

Over the years, as an outdoor enthusiast here in Pennsylvania, I, like many others, have seen wildlife that I never thought I would encounter in our state. e reason for these sightings is mostly attributed to the deliberate reintroduction of several species. Grant it, not all of the wildlife that has been introduced was for the bene t of hunting, but those reintroductions have certainly bene ted our state, and I and many others take great pleasure in spotting that wildlife. Interestingly, some of the wildlife we see today was once a common sight in our state many years ago, but for several reasons, it disappeared from our landscape.

much disappeared over the years. I remember, as a kid in western Pennsylvania, the sighting of an elk was pretty uncommon. e few elk that we did have resulted from elk being brought in from other states; 177 elk were trapped and transferred from 1913 through 1926. Today, we have an estimated herd of over 1,440 elk; each year, we now have a limited number of elk taken by hunters. Literally, thousands of people swarm all over the elk range in northern Pennsylvania just to see and photograph the elk, and you can bet that attraction has raised its share of money for the state.

Before Pennsylvania became a settled state, elk were a common sight in our forests, but they have pretty

gle. Eagles, like elk, were once a common sight in our state, but they, too, pretty much disappeared over the years. Here again, there was an e ort to reintroduce the magni cent bird back into our skies, and today, sightings are quite common. e last time I heard, there were over 300 nesting sites in our state; I know of at least two nesting sites within ten minutes of my home. Two weeks ago, I observed two mature eagles soaring overhead as I drove home from Muncy.

Since their reintroduction, I have been fortunate to spot several shers in various locations, with a couple of sightings near my home. A few weeks ago, as my wife and I were about to turn o Interstate 80 at Bloomsburg, I spotted one running across the front lawn of a farmhouse headed towards the nearby creek.

It wasn’t too many years ago that the sher was reintroduced into our state. e sher is a 12-pound, dark brown furbearer with an elongated body and a long tail. Again, shers were once common in Pennsylvania, but, like other animal species, they were eventually eradicated from our state. Needless to say, there was some controversy when they were reintroduced because of concern that shers might be detrimental to the turkey population, but that does not appear to be the case.

Recently, there has been talk about the reintroduction of the marten, a small furbearer weighing about two pounds and about the size of a fox squirrel. Here again, there have been some who oppose the reintroduction because of concerns over the martens’ food choices. Studies have shown that martens rarely eat snowshoe hares, ru ed grouse, or wild turkeys but primarily feed on voles, shrews, mice, insects, sh, reptiles, amphibians, and vegetables and fruits. Again, once common in our state, but the reintroduction is on hold for the time being.

Sure, I’m a dedicated hunter, but I also enjoy seeing all kinds of wildlife, especially some of those species that disappeared but are now back on the outdoor scene.

‘B

ucket lists’ are an unusual commodity. Sometimes, they have holes in them; other times, they over ow with expectations.

As the years have passed, my ‘bucket’ has continued to be worked on, especially regarding baseball-related items. Checked o has been witnessing Major League Baseball games at all 30 MLB stadiums and taking a road trip to the Field of Dreams in the corn elds of Iowa. But while doing some reading on a chilly winter day, a new destination was

added to the itinerary.

As a youngster one of my baseball heroes was Willie Mays. e way he played the game excited me. Soon to be 93, the Say Hey kid is the oldest living Hall-of-Famer and is still highly respected in baseball circles. Mays began his professional career as a teenager, reported to have made $500 as a 14-year-old, big money at the time, and in 1948 played for the Birmingham, Alabama Black Barons helping the team reach the

Negro League World Series.

Similar to what occurred at Bowman Field when MLB began work in preparation for the MLB/Little League Classic, I discovered the same type of eld renovation was underway at Birmingham’s Rickwood Field, where a June 20th MLB game between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals will take place. at sealed the deal; a road trip to Rickwood Field had jumped on my bucket list.

Driving south, we checked o Jean’s bucket list item of touring the Biltmore mansion in Ashville, North Carolina, and taking in one of our favorite haunts, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, but Rickwood was the destination.

Arriving at the country’s oldest ballpark (the rst game was played on August 18, 1910), the park’s historic nature was evident. Workers were busy with eld preparations for the upcoming MLB game, but the ghosts of baseball past surrounded you. We were met by Gerald Watkins, chairman of the board and executive director of the Friends of Rickwood Field, and immediately learned we had

something in common. Just as I was visiting him, he told me of his visit to Williamsport.

“Last year, at the Little League Classic, Major League Baseball had me up there as a guest. I got to go to the Little League Complex and spend the entire day with the MLB crew as they put on the Classic. I had an on-the- eld pass and had the time of my life. I can’t say enough about how kind and nice the people were in Williamsport. It was almost like being in Alabama!”

Pointing with pride to what was taking place at Rickwood, Watkins’ vision was clear.

“We will have a spectacular playing surface, with brand new MLB-style dugouts, and this revision will be a great thing for the city of Birmingham. MLB coming here was almost like a heart transplant for Rickwood Field. We were in good shape but did not have the funding to make major improvements, and we were just going to rock along. MLB’s coming got the city involved, along with some of our corporate leaders. It has been a tremendous asset for us. is will allow us not only to play ball but will add improvements to the ballpark that will allow us to continue on for hopefully another 100 years.”

Over the years, more than 180 Hall of Fame players played at

Rickwood Field, including some of the Negro League’s greatest stars.

“So many of the great Negro Leaguers played here, including Satchel Paige, and it was home of the Birmingham Black Barons for 42 years,” Watkins explained.

“MLB is looking to expand its reach in every way. One thing they are concerned about is people of color are not playing baseball as much as they used to. It has made for a good partnership. Once MLB got the idea of doing it and knowing what they had to work with, I knew it was going to happen.”

When Mays learned of MLB’s restoration of Rickwood Field, he was excited. “I can’t believe it. I never thought I’d see in my lifetime a Major League baseball game being played on the very eld where I played baseball as a teenager.”

While it is not yet known if Mays will be able to attend the June 20th game, Watkins remains hopeful.

“ at’s up in the air. It could be a decision that’s made two days before our game. We’d love to have Mr. Mays here, but that is out of our hands. MLB will do anything they can to bring him here, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Just as in the case of our own Bowman Field, Watkins appreciates the involvement of MLB.

“MLB will give me advice and counsel from time to time. e work of keeping

up the ballpark is going to land on the friends of Rickwood, and we have a plan for that. MLB has told us that if we take care of the eld and do the things necessary to keep what we have in very good shape, there is a possibility we could get a second game. at is going to be our goal.”

As we parted ways, Watkins extended a handshake and, with a warm southern drawl, explained, “We have three fulltime ground keepers and work together with our Board of Directors to keep the ballpark in as good of shape as possible, promote it, and share it with people like you who just want to come in and see the ballpark. I’m glad you came.” at feeling is mutual. I’ve got to get a bigger bucket!

UPMC Expert: Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious conditions that go beyond dieting or wanting to lose weight — they can signicantly a ect one’s physical and mental health and overall well-being. In addition, out of all mental illnesses, eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates and can be life-threatening if le untreated.

Approximately 9% of the U.S. population, or nearly 30 million people, will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime. Recognizing early warning signs and getting treatment right away is key to preventing longterm health consequences and promoting recovery. Increasing public awareness and knowledge about eating disorders is an important part of prevention.

Types of Eating Disorders

ere are several types of eating

disorders including:

Anorexia nervosa is marked by restriction of food/calories leading to signi cantly low body weight, intense fear of gaining weight, disturbance in one’s self-view of body size and shape, and the failure to recognize the seriousness of low body weight.

binge-eating may cause feelings of embarrassment or signi cant distress. Other features may include eating when no longer hungry or until uncomfortably full and eating alone to hide the amount of food that was eaten.

Treating Eating Disorders

Bulima nervosa involves repeated cycles of binge-eating and compensatory behaviors. Binge-eating is de ned as eating an unusually large amount of food in a short time period and feeling a sense of not having control over eating. is is followed by behaviors including vomiting, laxative use, fasting, and excessive exercise in an e ort to prevent weight gain. In addition, there is overvaluation of body shape and weight.

Binge eating disorder is characterized by repeated episodes of binge-eating coupled with a sense of lack of control. e

Eating disorders are serious behavioral health conditions that can be treated with the help of a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, social workers, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals. Eating disorder treatment options exist across all levels of care — inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and traditional outpatient.

Inpatient/Residential eating disorder treatment is 24/7 care. Inpatient may focus on acute medical stabilization and takes place in a hospital setting whereas residential treatment is less intensive and may be in a hospital or home-like setting. ey both share the goal of stabilizing nutrition, decreasing and stopping eating disorder

behaviors and restoring weight to a minimally adequate point, if needed.

Outpatient eating disorder treatment can include partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and traditional outpatient therapy, typically in a clinic setting. Partial hospitalization is usually ve days a week for 6-8 hours each day and provides nutrition support, meal supervision, and group, family, and individual therapy. Intensive outpatient is similar to partial hospitalization but is two to three days of the week for at least three hours each day. Traditional outpatient therapy usually consists of weekly individual sessions.

If you or a loved one are struggling with an eating disorder, it is important to know that you don’t have to go through it alone, and it is critical to get professional help right away.

Dr. Beckjord is a psychologist and director, clinical care services with UPMC Western Behavioral Health, Center for Eating Disorders service line. For more information, visit UPMC.com/services/behavioral-health/eating-disorders.
