Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandfathers, and those who ll the role of a fatherly gure. ank you for your time, patience, and commitment to our future generations. ank you for that special understanding when something isn’t going so well in a child’s life, no matter what their age, to give a little extra love. at fatherly love has no expiration date. ank you for that special praise and encouragement when things are going well. Hopefully, it will help the one you love so much reach the next level of success or continue on the path toward their dream.

ank you for understanding that a father’s time is needed for a lifetime. Even when that child has grown to the age, they might not think they need your time or advice. e key to being a good dad is nding a little di erent approach and maybe waiting for them to ask instead of just treating them as that child you always will see them as.

is is always tough for me as I see Jimmy and Hunter as those little boys I took everywhere and tried to teach everything. I’ve learned that a key as they get older is to let them test their wings and y on their own. By doing so, you make them more independent and more understanding of a new role or challenge in their life. is better prepares them for life’s challenges when you can’t be there or on the other end of the phone for them. is also helps get them ready for the thing no parent wants to think about when they reach the point in their life when they may have to rely on that love and support they have given their child. We’re all going to grow older even though we don’t have to act our age.

I should probably mention that it is o en better to act your age. However, sometimes, I embarrass Hunter and Jimmy with my juvenile behavior or comments. en I make it worse by laughing, thinking it’s funny. I better

stop there. I’m sure there are many dads out there smiling, as you know exactly what I’m talking about.

My sta and I would like to help you celebrate that fatherly gure in your life with a trip to Historic Bowman Field and some great ballpark refreshments. Simply be one of the rst four people to call or text me at 570-337-0755 on ursday, June 13th, and win four tickets and Cutters’ Cash for all four to enjoy dinner at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. Caring for Memorial Park Zoo No Easy Task

Feeding animals is no problem, if Curtis E. Stroup, Memorial Park Superintendent, may be permitted to say so. But it is more work to prepare a meal for the animals than it is for humans.

Because of their captive lives, they are unable to put the proper variety of natural foods to keep them healthy, and supplying them with other suitable types of foods proves to be a real task.

For example, some of the animals require a supply of certain type of bugs and insects. Regularly as the week rolls along virtually every animal gets its supply of prunes and the animals like them better than the average resident of a boardinghouse. Liver, onions, rice, beef, all kinds of greens, carrots, potatoes, hay, oats,

wheat, sunflower seeds are regular entries on the menu. Other foods are supplied when available.

There are now about 40 animals, besides the variety of rare birds at the zoo. They are fed twice a day under the direction of assistant superintendent, C. E. Stroup, whom the animals know as their chef.

Several new additions in the way of animals have appeared at the zoo the past week. Among them a pair of prairie dogs which came from Hutchinson, Kansas. Prairie dogs are not dogs at all but belongs to the marmots. It is a burrowing animal and is very gregarious in its habits. The spot in which it congregates is literally honeycombed with tunnels. There is, however, a kind of order observed in “dog towns”. The animals always leave certain roads or streets in which no burrows are made.

County Hall Corner: The Beginning of the End?

Decades from now, researchers will be trying to gure out how the United States went so far o the rails in the mid-2020s. Without any doubt, we are living in historic times. Never in two and a half centuries of our democracy has one party denigrated an opposing person from the opposite party as the Democratic Party has done with Donald Trump.

Four di erent cases appeared in 2024: federal indictment on classi ed document charges in Florida (40 counts), federal indictment for election interference in Washington, D.C. (4 counts), RICO racketeering in election interference in Georgia (13 counts), and the recent trial for falsi ed business records as part of a scheme to pay hush money (34 counts).

And if this was not enough, more than 30 states led cases based on the Fourteenth Amendment to keep Trump o the ballot, period. is had to do with a novel legal theory that this amendment disquali es anyone who took an oath defending the Constitution and then subsequently participated in a rebellion or an insurrection (January 6th, get it?) at particular one was so ridiculous that in March of this year, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously (!) against Colorado using this to disqualify Trump from the ballot. is essentially

killed that idea for the other states as well. Never has a presidential candidate, and a former President for that matter, ever seen as much vitriol thrown at him as Donald J. Trump. He was impeached by the House of Representatives twice while in o ce as President, once for utilizing Russian interference in the 2016 election and the other for instigating an ‘insurrection’ on January 6, 2021. In the rst one, the “Russian interference” turned out to be instigated by the Clinton campaign, not Trump’s. e second was a part of the “January 6th Worst Day in American History” mantra. Nothing in our history has ever seen such a blatant attempt to win an election through what has become known as ‘lawfare.’ All four of those charges were purposely pushed to this year, even though they could have been

COUNTY HALL

tried earlier, in some cases years earlier. All of this just to be able to put in front of Trump’s name — “convicted felon.”

The charges could go one of two ways. First, Trump could go to jail. Judge Juan Merchan has chosen July 11th to sentence Donald Trump for his 34 federal convictions, which could be as much as a one-year prison incarceration. By an amazing coincidence, that date just happens to be four days before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to become the official Republican Party nominee for President.

The second would be if the Supreme Court were to step in based on the violations in that recent trial. The jury was anything but impartial, starting with Judge Merchan himself, a Biden donor and father to a Democratic Party consultant. Among the 34 federal indictments, 23 of the 34 “hush money” counts could not be traced to Trump, and beyond that, there was nothing to “hush.” The “hush” related to Stormy Daniels’s hours of testimony had nothing relevant to the charges; the only purpose was to be inflammatory. And when Trump’s lawyers objected, they were always denied. Judge Merchan allowed one witness in Trump’s defense, attorney Robert J. Costello and he was consistently admonished by the judge to the point that he was even warned about rolling his eyes!

What makes all of this even more disgusting is the one way this arc of justice goes. Why is it that we never heard any more about the cocaine that was found in the White

House? Someone had to be responsible, and are they still in the White House? What about the unprecedented leak in the Supreme Court of a draft of Justice Alito’s opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision? Crickets on that one, too. Is there any justice coming as a result of the humiliating flight from Kabul that took the lives of 13 American service personnel and the abandonment of $50 billion in weapons to the Taliban terrorists? Or the recent embarrassment of the failed $320 million Gaza pier that lasted two weeks and managed to injure three US Service members? These and a stack of other offenses are infinitely more important and impact our country than business records and nonexistent election interference issues. These truly are historic times. The phrase “crossing the Rubicon” is an idiom that means “passing a point of no return.” Its meaning comes from the crossing of the river Rubicon by Julius Caesar in early January 49 BC. At the time, Rome was a Republic, and it was forbidden for a general to bring his army into Rome itself. Yet Julius Caesar wanted to create an empire, so he crossed the Rubicon, which started a five-year Roman civil war. At the war’s end, Julius Caesar was declared dictator for life. As dictator, Caesar presided over the end of the Roman Republic and the start of the Roman Empire. Yet he went too far and was murdered by his friend, Brutus. Sadly, our country has seen a crossing of the Rubicon, and may God help us all.

Rise Up Village Bakery Serves Community

Yrecently purchased a machine that will help them make 300 cookies a minute! I reached out to Marty and Wendy McCormick to ask them more about the bakery and their ministry.

Dave: Please tell me the main purpose of the bakery.

Marty/Wendy: The purpose of the bakery is to assist people who are returning to the community from incarceration to be reconnected to the community and help them learn basic jobrelated skills and gain self-confidence.

Dave: When did you first start the bakery?

Wendy: We began in February 2022 and accepted the first trainees in May 2022.

Dave: How did this all come about?

Wendy: The idea resulted from Marty’s volunteer time at the Clinton County prison. He began researching ways in which returning citizens could be supported upon release. Finding employment was a key problem. His research led him to job training programs around the country, and he learned that food service was a major employer of previously incarcerated individuals. He modeled his idea for the Rise Up Village

ou hear a lot about second chances and how rare they actually are, especially for individuals who have spent time in prison. To compound this problem, recidivism rates are high, as many people who serve their time quickly relapse into the type of behavior that landed them in prison in the first place. This is largely because they simply lack the skills necessary to function in society. As a friend once told me, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” That’s where Marty and Wendy McCormick come in. The McCormicks are the managers of the Rise Up Village Bakery, which operates out of the New Covenant United Church of Christ in Williamsport and is a ministry of United Churches of Lycoming County. Having heard of the great work that Marty and Wendy were doing for the community, I reached out to ask them more about their ministry, which pairs up justice-involved individuals with community volunteers. In addition to helping those who have been previously incarcerated, it also produces top-quality breads, muffins, and cookies on a weekly basis. To say it’s been a success is an understatement. In fact, the ministry has grown so fast that they

Bakery a er several established programs.

Dave: What exactly do you and your clients do at the bakery?

Wendy: We help the trainees learn the “so skills” necessary to be successful in any job setting. is includes focusing on attitude, attendance, appropriate behaviors, and quality performance. Marty provides instruction in job search strategies. e volunteers and trainees work together as a team to produce numerous baked products “from scratch.”

e baking process includes measurement, mixing, baking, packaging, and clean-up. Everyone participates equally in the tasks.

Dave: What do you hope to accomplish with the bakery in the long term?

Marty: We want to be open more days and hours to train more individuals. We are currently able to provide baked goods for special events. A long-term goal would be to operate a bakery/café so the participants could learn how to run a business and work with the public. is expansion is dependent upon more volunteer sta , as there are no paid employees.

Dave: When is the bakery open, and how does the community get involved and/or patronize it?

Marty/Wendy: We currently bake on Mondays and Tuesdays. We send a “menu” each week to people on our customer list. Orders are emailed to us, and the baked goods are picked up on Tuesday a ernoon.

To receive the weekly notice, people can sign up via email. We also bake extras for the “over ow table” and walk-ins and are able to select from those items. e sale of our products is the program’s primary funding source. We have also received donations from businesses, churches, and individuals.

Dave: Please tell me where people can buy your baked goods or volunteer if they are interested.

Marty/Wendy: We are a ministry of the United Churches of Lycoming County, UCLC. We lease the kitchen in the New Covenant United Church of Christ, 202 E. 3rd St., in Williamsport. We can be contacted via email at riseupvillagebakery@gmail.com or by phone (Marty) 570-295-8434 or (Wendy) 570-419-9303. You can also follow us on Facebook. We are always looking for more volunteers, particularly those who have baking experience. We have a core group of incredible volunteers, but we need more help so that we can extend our hours. is program has been a blessing to our volunteers and our trainees. We support one another and work together in a spirit of fellowship and love.

Subscription Boxes for Dad

ith Father’s Day right around the corner, I was thinking about how best to change up standard gift-giving for dads. The cliched presents of ties and golf balls can almost be given ironically because it’s hard to show the father figures in your life just how much they mean with a single gift. This year, why not show your appreciation with a series of gifts? And no, a coupon book for grass cutting and car washing doesn’t count. Why not give dad, or stepdad, or grandpa, or favorite uncle, or big brother who is a great dad in his own right, a subscription box?

Today, there are dozens of subscription boxes intended for men and designed around just about every interest a dad could have. There are subscription plans in a variety of categories, such as hobbies, clothing, food, drinks, personal care, and entertainment. Here’s a rundown of some box options to consider this Father’s Day.

First up, for a subscription to guarantee dad a smooth shave, there’s Harry’s Best Shave Club. You can customize your subscription from blades to shave gel to

balms. You can even throw in some hair and body products like texturizing putty, face wash, and post-shave lotion. Or select a presorted bundle, like their shave sets, shower trio, or a full skincare suite. There is also the Dollar Shave Club, which is a standard delivery of new razors, not so much customization, but more affordable at around $5 per delivery.

From shaving to shorts, there’s Basic Man, which supplies essentials like underwear, socks, and T-shirts each month for around $20. Each delivery contains a t-shirt, a pair of socks, and a pair of underwear for the man in your life who may not be the best at rotating his underthings in the mostly timely of timelines. Each product also comes with a “destroy by” date to let you know how long a well-worn, frequently washed garment is meant to last. And if you’re feeling left out, there’s also Get Basic for ladies.

If Dad needs a wardrobe-wide upgrade, then check out Stitch Fix. Stylists work with recipients on a curated box based on style preferences, size, and price

range and send three outfits to try. He can then decide what he likes best, keep those pieces, and ship the rest back. and blended teas. Word of warning: These subscriptions come in whole beans, not ground, so you may want to include a coffee grinder with your Father’s Day card.

For Foodie dads, there are so many boxes out there. From the standard meal delivery services like Hello Fresh and Blue Apron to Grill Master Club to snack subscriptions like Universal Yums. These options allow you to cater to your dad’s food preferences, whether he cooks daily, loves to barbecue, or wants to try snacks from around the globe.

If your dad is in the market for something stronger, there’s Flaviar Whiskey Club for a very high-end selection of spirits to build up his home bar. Each tasting box includes three 50ml whiskey samples. If your dad is more of a wine guy, there’s Winc, which delivers four bottles each month of unique, small-production wines at various price points. For beer drinkers, check out Craft Beer Club, which delivers 12 or 24 individual beers ranging from IPAs, stouts, sours, and ciders.

For coffee-loving dads, there are a ton of java-based subscriptions. I was personally gifted 3-months’ worth of deliveries from Trade Coffee, which lets you sample from small roasters that focus on flavor and ethical sourcing. Similarly, there’s Atlas Coffee for the coffee drinker who likes to travel the world with each cup. This box will supply a steady stream of single-roast beans from around the globe from brands you won’t find in big chains. Atlas also offers tea subscriptions, from flavored tea, pure tea leaves, herbal teas,

This is just the tip of the gift-giving iceberg when it comes to subscription boxes for those on your Father’s Day gift list. There are subscriptions for plant lovers, puzzlers, model-makers, and gadget and tech-themed boxes. Worried about the cost? Instead of boxes, you can opt for publications like yearly subscriptions to GQ, Smithsonian Magazine, Golf Digest, Guns & Ammo, Forbes, or Reader’s Digest. Shopping for dads can be tough. Hopefully, this will give you some ideas for thoughtful and creative gifts for Father’s Day.

There is such a special connection with dads, whether you are a son or a daughter.

To a son, a dad is their first hero, and to a daughter, it’s the first man she will love.

As I think about Father’s Day, my heart can’t help but think about my son’s girlfriend, who just lost her dad last week. The day was just devastating. The most horrible part was she was the one who found him. No fourteen-year-old girl should ever have to go through that. That morning, when I got the call, I didn’t know what to do. I called my dad, and he asked me if I texted Ty’s girlfriend.

When I called my dad and told him that morning, I just said, “Dad, you know how much I love and appreciate you, right?”

“Oh, I know you do, honey, and I love you very much,” he answered back.

I couldn’t imagine what this family was going through at that moment.

(I am not going to share their names for privacy.) I had texted her momma, who is a very dear friend of mine. It had only been thirty minutes since she found her dad, and I didn’t want to bother her during that extremely difficult time. I kid you not; as soon as I hung up with my dad, I had a text from my sweet girl. Her text hit me hard as she told me what happened, but she also told me how much she loved me. The fact that she thought of texting me through one of the most difficult days in her life really touched me. I hurt because she hurt, and her family, who I love dearly, was hurting too. I immediately left work, got Ty from school, and we went to be with them.

My dad has always been one of those dads who never hides the way he feels. One thing my brother and I can always count on is hearing “I love you.” Something both of our parents never lacked in saying to us. I have been through a lot health-wise in the past few years. Nothing I could have prevented! But my dad would seriously call me every single day to check on me after surgeries or follow-up appointments. I don’t think I realized how crappy I felt for so long until now. I feel top-notch, absolutely incredible. Praise the Lord! My dad, of course, still calls to check in on us very often, but what I love most is how every time we hang up, he always says, “Now, if you need anything, honey, you let me know!” Ask anyone who knows my dad, Lee Perry. That man would do anything for anyone. He is such a hard worker and a man who, without a doubt, loves his kids. I can never say my dad wasn’t a good father. Sick or healthy, he is there. He has taught me so much in life, and I am

like him in so many ways. I am thankful that he taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to. When I didn’t feel like I could, Dad would be right there saying, “Yes, you can.” I always had that boost when I needed it. Still, at 38 years old, I call Dad and get his advice. I can’t imagine not having him here. It’s hard for me to sit here and think of things you may not know about him. I often tell you about our family and other Father’s Day articles I’ve done in the past, such as how he bought me a dirt bike before I was even born. He taught me how to ride a bicycle, dirt bike, and street bike, as well as how to drive. Did you know I could ride a dirt bike before a bicycle? Facts. Did you know I rode on the back of my dad’s street bike at the age of 13 from South Carolina to Pennsylvania in one day

without stopping?

I know I have shared this before, but this was one of those memories with my dad I will never forget. The only times we stopped were for gas and once at McDonald’s drivethru. I shoved my burger through my helmet while riding down a major highway. I’d tap on Dad’s shoulder, handing him French fries while he drove. We had this huge storm following us up the coast the entire way, but you know what? We made it home just in time! Just me and Dad. It was awesome. My butt wasn’t near as big back then, *enter cheesy smile here*, and I really don’t know how I made it that far without some cushion back there! Hahaha! Good times.

COOKIN

My dad isn’t just a great dad but also a great pap. He gets Kenzy on the bus for me once a week and started teaching Tyler how to hunt last fall. He loves spending time with his grandkids. I love that he asks to do things with them. A lot of paps/dads just don’t do that, and I think it is so special!!

When I look at my dad, I see my pap, Dwain Perry, and remember all the special times I spent with my grandparents. I’m so thankful my kids have that with their grandparents as well.

Dad keeps popsicles in his freezer in the garage, so if any of the grandkids come down, they can have one. He also gets the mega stu ed Oreos for Kenzy on school mornings. She always wants to go to Pappy’s for cookies and milk. My grandparents always had the goodies, too! What are grandparents for than to love and spoil their grandbabies?

Dad,

Growing up, you told me that I could do anything I put my mind to. During my moments of self-doubt, you helped me see that my qualities were not weaknesses but strengths. You told me I was special and worthy and taught me to always put my best foot forward. I will always look up to you and admire who you are. I couldn’t ask for a better father who has loved me unconditionally and has truly taught me so much. You raised me to be tough and do things that some women never get the chance to learn. You’ve always been a hands-on dad, teaching us everything we

needed to know to get us ready for a crazy life. You always expressed your pride and acceptance of me — things a girl sometimes needs to hear even when she’s grown up and sets out on her own — and I am so thankful for those words.

But what’s more important is that you didn’t just tell me, you showed me. Your actions meant everything in the world to me! I can’t say I love you enough. Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Crusoe, Christie, Shackleton & Pirates: Island Books for Summer Reading

s many Webb readers prepare for time at the beach this summer, here are 15 “island books” for sunny seaside reads.

But keep in mind: Not every island is hot — or empty!

Robinson Crusoe (Daniel Defoe) – The granddaddy of all stranded-man tales, Defoe’s 1719 tome — with shipwreck, cannibals, mutineers, religious conversion and of course, the helpful “Man Friday” — has achieved almost mythic status. Also worthy: Diana Souhami’s Selkirk’s Island — story of the real-life islander who inspired Defoe’s novel.

Island of the Blue Dolphins (Scott O’Dell) – Based on the true story of a preteen girl marooned for years on an island off California, this slender, gem-like tale won the Newbery Award in 1961. A virtually perfect book.

Appleby on Ararat (Michael Innes) –Early entry in Innes’s five-decade series of witty and distinguished mysteries focused on Sir John Appleby of Scotland Yard. In this 1941 winner, Appleby and several shipwreck survivors wash up on a remote island and soon discover they aren’t alone.

Endurance (Alfred Lansing) – Though only part of it occurs on an isolated isle, here at least is one island tale that’s cold cold

COLD. The true story of Ernest Shackleton’s unsuccessful bid to reach the South Pole in 1914, it climaxes with a 920-mile trip in an open boat across what is probably the fiercest stretch of ocean on the planet. Absolutely incredible — and inspiring.

Summer of ’69 (Elin Hilderbrand) – The so-called “queen of beach reads” — who spoke at Williamsport’s Brown Library in 2022 — Hilderbrand has penned more than 25 books, nearly all set on Nantucket Island. This engaging page-turner chronicles one tumultuous family during an equally tumultuous summer that saw both Chappaquiddick and Apollo XI.

Black Widow (Randy Wayne White) –The popular White is best known for his page-turning thrillers featuring retired NSA agent Marion “Doc” Ford — most of which are set around Florida’s Sanibel Island. Blending savvy ecology, salty atmosphere and sizzling suspense, they’ve been labeled “the thinking-man’s action novel.” In Black Widow, Doc travels to the Windward Islands, where he goes up against killers, blackmailers and the titular “voodoo queen.”

Lord of the Flies (William Golding) –Standard fare in high-school classrooms,

ISLAND

Golding’s 1954 story of stranded schoolboys fighting for survival is exotic, thrilling, beautifully written and rich in symbolism. Flies fans should also seek out Golding’s Pincher Martin, in which one man is marooned on a tiny, ocean-bound patch of rock.

The Coral Island (R. M. Ballantyne)

– Delightful Victorian-era tale of three teenage boys and their exploits on an Edenic isle. The later Lord of the Flies is clearly a “revisionist” take on Ballantyne (Golding even borrows the characters’ names), and readers who find Flies too depressing should grab this buoyant, sun-drenched classic.

Treasure Island (Robert Louis Stevenson)

– Speaking of classics, here’s another superlative adventure from the peerless Stevenson — a book to which every pirate fan owes an undying debt.

August Isle (Ali Standish) – Young-adult charmer set in the title’s fictional Florida locale, where youthful protagonist Miranda meets a magical mix of mystery, history, family, friendship and adventure. Standish’s ending has enough closure for any five other tales.

The Secret Treasure of Oak Island (D’Arcy O’Connor) – True story of the greatest treasure-hunt in history — 230 years of frenetic excavation on an island off Nova Scotia, searching for unknown plunder in a mysterious “money pit” that was apparently booby-trapped to foil all seekers. Once little known, this ongoing fiasco is now widely familiar thanks to the 11-season series on

History Channel.

And Then There Were None (Agatha Christie) – Arguably the world’s greatest whodunit (by the writer who is also its greatest practitioner), None sees 10 people lured to a remote island and then mysteriously bumped off, one by one. According to Wikipedia, at more than 100 million copies, it is the best-selling mystery of all time.

Swallows and Amazons (Arthur Ransome) – The first of Ransome’s 12 beloved books about kids exploring a British lake — particularly an uninhabited island. Another young-adult winner that deserves to be rediscovered.

Our Virgin Island (Robb White) –Speaking of rediscovery: This out-ofprint title by a the virtually known White recounts the years he and his wife spent making a hardscrabble life for themselves on an eight-acre islet in the British Virgins. White, a personal favorite whose name can be found in my email address, wrote two other accounts of this saga; but — like most of his books — all three are very hard to find.

Searching for Paradise (Thurston Clarke)

– Travel writer Clarke visited nearly 20 different locales — scary islands, private islands, pleasure islands, even Selkirk’s island — in an attempt to discover just why they’re so alluring. Originally titled Searching for Crusoe, it’s the ultimate tribute to “islomania”; pure delight from start to finish.

UPMC Surgeon: How Aging Affects the Spine

lmost everyone experiences back pain at some point. According to the National Institutes of Health, back pain is one of the most common reasons Americans go to the doctor, second only to colds and the flu.

Our bodies are incredibly designed and can withstand a lot of stress, but as we age, the normal wear and tear of life can increase the risk of spine-related problems and the likelihood of neck and back pain.

The most common age-related spine conditions are degenerative changes in disks and joints, spinal stenosis, and frail vertebrae.

– Discs and cartilage help hold the spine together providing movement to the spine as well as absorbing impact between bones. Degenerative changes in the discs in the spine can cause the bones to rub against one another and degenerative joint problems, such as osteoarthritis, cause the cartilage between the bones to break down. Degenerative issues are usually associated with symptoms such as stiffness, tenderness, numbness or tingling, and intermittent back pain, especially when active.

– Spinal stenosis is the result of the degeneration of the cushioning discs in the spine which causes the spinal canal to narrow. This can lead to pressure on the

spinal cord and pinch your nerves. Most often spinal stenosis causes low back pain, but it can also cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs.

– Our bones are constantly breaking down and regenerating. Osteoporosis occurs when the body’s natural ability to create new bone does not keep up with the loss of old bone. Bone production decreases with age and the older you become, the more likely you are to experience a form of osteoporosis. Women are also more likely to develop osteoporosis than men. The condition causes the bones to become weak and brittle, which can lead to fractures and other structural issues in the spine.

There are several ways to treat age-related back pain, depending on the extent and severity of your condition and pain. Spine care specialists approach spine pain by opting for conservative treatment options and exhausting these measures before recommending surgery. Conservative treatment takes time but can have great results.

Conservative treatments include:

– A healthy and nutritious diet: Focusing on a healthy, well-balanced diet, helps maintain a healthy weight and ensures you’re fueling your body properly for an active lifestyle and enriching your body with essential vitamins and minerals.

– Quitting smoking: Smoking increases the risks for other health issues and can have

negative effects on bone development and health.

– Getting active: Our bodies are made to be in motion and a physically active lifestyle helps promote joint health.

– Support with physical therapy: Therapists can help identify and correct muscle weaknesses, posture problems, or other body mechanics issues that are contributing to your pain. A physical therapist will teach you specific exercises to strengthen your back, abs, and hips, as well as stretches that can help with mobility. By increasing strength, endurance, and flexibility, you often can reduce pain and improve function.

– Incorporating medicine with other treatments: Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory (NSAID) medications can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Your provider may also offer a pain-relieving injection targeting specific areas of the spine. Common injections include cortisone for inflammation, trigger point injections targeting muscle spasms, and nerve blocks. Consult with your specialist before taking any medications.

The hope is these conservative treatment actions will not only help improve your pain over time but also make you the healthiest you can be. If conservative treatment is not enough for your pain and condition, surgery may be considered, and the healthier you are at the time of surgery, the better the potential outcome.

Although surgical intervention remains the last resort, advances in surgical techniques are making spinal surgery less frightening for patients. Newer technology enables surgeons to operate with more precision through

smaller incisions, which has improved the outcomes of surgeries for certain people. This lends itself to patients returning to their day-to-day lives more quickly.

Although not everyone is a good candidate for certain procedures, a specialist will walk patients through all the options, and that is where patients can benefit from a team approach to spine surgery like what is available through UPMC Spine Care.

At UPMC, a care team comprised of surgeons from neurosurgery and orthopaedics and specialists from pain management and physical medicine all work together with their expertise to look at your case to develop multiple options and creative solutions for your pain management and treatment. You will be presented with a package of treatments together that is tailored to your specific needs, and you will play an active role in your entire treatment journey.

While some minor aches and pains may be par for the course of our lives, back pain that affects your quality of life is concerning and should be evaluated. If you experience back pain, listen to your inner voice. If you feel that you need to see a doctor, especially after a fall, go and get evaluated right away.

Brunch, Sporks, Zedonks and Nannygate: “Two Meanings Packed Up

ost of us know that words like brunch and smog were coined by combining parts from two other terms — in this case, breakfast + lunch, and of course smoke + fog. is kind of coinage is called a blend — or sometimes, a portmanteau. ere are literally hundreds of these in English, including many that are comical, quirky or surprising — for example: motel, vitamin, cremains, chortle, zedonk and turducken.

Indeed, the sprawling list of blends is so much fun — and so fascinating — that a er much thought, I nally settled on that as our topic for this 50th installment of Webb’s Weird Words. But we may have to run to 52 or 53 before we can get through them all!

ough I generally plan to note the source-words, many are su ciently clear without explanation: bromance, chillax (yes, this is now in the dictionary!), emoticon, frenemy, mockumentary, moped, sexting (though some of us would prefer this was not

into One Word”

a thing!), simulcast, sitcom, spork, staycation, telethon and workaholic.

Like the last two here, many blends involve clipping the su x o a wellknown word (marathon, alcoholic) and then adding it to various other terms; in fact, both (a)holic and (a)thon have given us countless blend-words. While I don’t plan to cover those here, I will note one other common clipped su x: -gate, from the Nixon-era Watergate scandal. is has given us dozens of blends, including Debategate, Koreagate, Nannygate, Contragate (aka Irangate) and three di erent Strippergates

According to Wikipedia, the use of -gate as a su x for scandals was popularized by New York Times columnist William Sa re (1929-2009). And while we’re giving credit, no discussion of blends would be complete without a shout-out to Lewis Carroll, who coined several for “Jabberwocky” — a nonsense poem in his 1871 fantasy rough the LookingGlass (sequel to Alice in Wonderland) In addition to chortle, which combines chuckle and snort, “Jabberwocky” also includes a variety of non-blended

words

My favorite of these is the blade-swishing sound snicker-snack — which may be related to the classic weird-word snickersnee, a type of knife often used as a weapon.

The poem also gives us frabjous and galumphing — but with no reference as to what they combine (fabulous and joyous? … gallop and triumph?). Humpty Dumpty does explain Carroll’s mimsy — as a mix of miserable and flimsy; and as for slithy (which likewise has yet to achieve common use): That,

says Humpty, means “lithe and slimy”; and he adds, “‘Lithe’ is the same as ‘active.’ You see it’s like a portmanteau, there are two meanings packed up into one word.”

And in this way, Carroll gave us the longer term for a blend: Once quite common in England, a portmanteau is a single carrying-case that unfolds into two separate compartments. (Its original plural, by the way, is portmanteaux.)

In addition to Carroll-coinages, my massive list of blends has categories for surprise, science, sports, food, animals, place-names, people-names, politics

and trademarks. Most of those will have to wait till later, but let’s start with a few that are often not even recognized as blends:

Prissy, for example, mixes prim and sissy, while twirl is probably a combination of twist and whirl. (While we’re here, let’s put twerk — likely a blend twist and jerk — into the same “wish-it-away” category as sexting. Please.)

Electrocute combines electricity and execute; as such, it always implies death and should not be used for simply getting shocked. (In other words: I got electrocuted! is something no one ever

should — or could! — actually say.)

Motel is a mix of motor and hotel, and is to be distinguished from the latter in that it is found not in cities but along roads and highways — often the sort of lodging where travelers can park right outside their rooms.

My list of blends for near-future columns is, you might say, ginormous. So just to bait the hook, here are a few weird animal blends for your consideration:

Zedonk, lorikeet, beefalo, puggle, chorkie, tiglon, cockapoo and of course, labradoodle.

See you here next week!

Taber Museum Hosts Shannon Jones, Author of Susquehanna Lore

The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society will be hosting Shannon Jones at our Society Program on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in our Community Room. The lecture, sponsored by Van Campen Motors, is free and open to the public.

Shannon Jones is a folklorist and botanical historian based out of the Appalachian Mountains. She has lived in both Central Pennsylvania and in the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. Shannon earned a Masters in Early European History from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She followed her master’s degree with courses on Magic in the Middle Ages from the University of Barcelona and on Herbal Medicine 101 from the University of Minnesota.

In 2019, she released her book on Susquehanna Lore, about the folklore and history of the Susquehanna River and Valley. She has plans on releasing more regional folklore books, as well as a book detailing the Colonial history of plants.

Shannon is also the creator and historical researcher for SJ Histories, through

which she creates lectures and classes on both folklore and the historical uses of plants.

As this is our Society Program, admission to the museum will be free.

The third Sunday of each month, May through October, is free admission day. Located at 858 West Fourth Street, Williamsport, the Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society provides a history of the region with information about Native American culture, frontier exploration, the development of the Pennsylvania canal, immigration during the 19th century, and the logging and lumbering era of the 19th century. The Taber Museum also houses the world-class Larue Shempp Model Train Collection. The museum is open for touring Tuesdays through Fridays, 9:30am until 4:00pm; Saturdays, 11:00am until 4:00pm and Sundays (May through October), 1:00pm until 4:00pm. There is ample parking behind the museum and along the street. For further information, please contact the museum at 570.326.3326 or visit our website at www.tabermuseum.org.

all before you come. Just give a quick holler to say you’re on your way and let us know to look for you at the front door. You got the digits, right? Yeah, texting might be faster but whatever — just call before you leave. As in the new book “Telephone of the Tree” by Alison McGhee, the sound of your voice is all that’s needed.

Ayla and Kiri had been best friends since they were babies. Ayla’s father and Kiri’s mother were dancing their babies in the moonlight to get them to sleep, and that was that, forever.

For sure, Kiri and Ayla are “tree people.” Up and down their street are trees that mark the birth of

babies in the neighborhood, or to remember people. Kiri’s tree is a pine; Ayla’s is a birch and they like “treeing” together. ey always know what the other one is thinking. ey even have a secret code in their trees.

Kiri will be eleven years old at the end of August and Ayla is sure Kiri will be home by then. She’s planning on it; she’s even got their

lucky birthday candle ready. Yep, Kiri is returning, and Ayla waits, saying lalalala softly to herself so she doesn’t have to think.

Funny thing: one morning, Ayla looked out her bedroom window and she noticed something that wasn’t there before: a dial-up telephone like her grandma once had, nestled in her birch tree, and Ayla didn’t know where it came from. Whatever. When the fiveyear-old from across the street told her that his gecko died, Ayla lied

and said he could talk to Sweetheart on that phone. She watched him then, and she saw that he wasn’t sad anymore. The same thing happened to everyone who stopped at Ayla’s tree to talk on the telephone to people they lost, saying things they didn’t get to say.

Ayla wishes she could talk to Kiri. It will be Kiri’s birthday at the end of August, but Ayla is not going to touch that phone...

You know what’s coming, don’t you? And you’d like to protect your

child from it but don’t. “Telephone of the Tree” is too beautiful a book to miss.

Pure friendship and love flow between the pages of this short story, right alongside a wistful joy that speaks of those moments with a BFF that you know you’ll cherish until you’re both old and gray. Author Alison McGhee lets readers steep in this feeling awhile, setting loaded scenes of school, secret codes, and summer vacation that will be familiar for her target

audience and to any parents reading along. But don’t get too comfortable: before long, McGhee starts the slow descent into the heart(break) of the tale and the reasons for the somberness.

For an adult, this is a book that begs a kid to stay a kid, while acknowledging that doing so isn’t possible sometimes. For your 8-to12-year-old, though, “Telephone of the Tree” is a story they’ll dial into and pass around because this book’s got their number.

The Roving Sportsman… Timber Rattlesnake Season

Having grown up in Lycoming County and spent most of my life roaming its hills and streams, it has been a natural progression to be an avid lover of nature and to enjoy the abundant outdoor sporting opportunities that this area provides. rough the years, my respect for all of nature’s wonders has continued to grow, particularly for the rattlesnake.

While most rattlesnakes prefer to be le alone and, if they sense your presence, would instead move out of your way and be le undisturbed, they can occasionally be somewhat aggressive. It is said that when they are shedding their skin and their eyes become glazed over in the process, they can be more aggressive. With their reduced visibility, they might tend to lash out or strike at things that their limited vision does not allow them to identify properly. And there

are times when you come upon them suddenly, and they are surprised by your presence; they may strike out of self-defense. is is natural on their part, but it can have very unpleasant results for you or your pet.

So what can you do? e rst step is to educate yourself about our timber rattlers. It was in 2017 that the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced that they were taking the timber rattlesnake o the endangered list because their numbers had nally increased to a level where they no longer needed to be listed as endangered in Pennsylvania. For you, that means there is an increased chance of encountering one when hiking, hunting, or shing. But, if you leave them alone, they will tend to leave you alone.

ere is a rather complex procedure in place if you want to take a rattlesnake (or copperhead). First, you will need a current shing license and must obtain a valid annual Venomous Snake Permit to hunt,

take, catch, kill, or possess a timber rattlesnake (or copperhead). The annual cost of the permit is $30.00 for residents and $60.00 for nonresidents. Venomous Snake Permit holders must submit a catch report regardless if they did not hunt or hunted and did not harvest. With the proper license and permit, you can take one Eastern copperhead and one timber rattlesnake per year during the season, which this year runs from June 10 to July 31. The timber rattler must be at least 42 inches long and possess 21 or more subcaudal scales (identifying it as a male). However, there is more to understand regarding the regulations. Refer to the current edition of the Pennsylvania Fishing Summary handbook. Reptile seasons, limits, and regulations are covered in this manual.

The breeding season for our rattlesnakes here in Pennsylvania runs from summer until mid-September. This is when the most sightings occur since the snakes can travel up to a mile from their home area or den as they look for a mate. If you come across a rattlesnake, give it a wide berth and make note of the location so that if

you return, you can be on higher alert as you travel through. If you are encountering rattlesnakes near your home and want to repel them, there are several things you might do. It is said that snakes do not like to crawl over rough or sharp items. Thus, wood chips used as mulch or crushed gravel may effectively repel them. It has also been said that rattlesnakes do not like the smell of coffee grounds. Thus, gardeners sometimes scatter coffee grounds in the garden area to repel rattlesnakes. It has been shown that the scent of ammonia repels rattlesnakes; therefore, one of the most effective ways to keep them out of an area like a garden is to soak ammonia into rags, place them in unsealed plastic bags, and put the bags around the garden.

The good news is that there are much fewer reported rattlesnake bites than one would imagine. In fact, on average, there are only two or three reported annually, with occasionally none being reported at all. Take time to enjoy our great outdoors, but just be aware that an encounter with a rattlesnake is possible, and use common sense if you do so.

the Art of Fishing

Teaching people how to sh may seem like a very simple procedure to some; a er all, the only thing you have to do is put a worm on a hook, throw it in the water, and watch for the bobber to go under.

To be honest, that simple maneuver does indeed catch sh, but the truth is there is far more to learn and master to be frequently successful.

ink about it: we have a wide variety of sh species to sh for, and each has its unique behaviors. In addition, these various sh species all inhabit a wide range of di erent water conditions, from large, deep lakes to tiny woodland streams. If that isn’t enough to complicate things, there is also a variety of tools and techniques for catching sh, and the number of lures and baits available, and the speci c ways to sh those lures and baits is mind-blowing.

For those of us who have been shing for most of our lives, we don’t o en give it much thought; we just go do our thing, but when it’s time to teach or show someone else some aspect of shing, it makes us think about how involved it can be.

is is especially important when it comes to y shing. I was recently reminded of this when Kaden Rodarmel, a high-school senior at Loyalsock, asked me to show him how to use a yrod. A er going through the usual verbal and actual procedures, Kaden soon found himself laying out a decent y. We also had access to a pond — a nice plus, and on the third cast, Kaden was into his rst sh on a yrod. Needless to say, I think he’s “hooked”.

I remember my own learning experience when I was in high school, and my art teacher, Sam Richards, o ered to take me y shing on a small trout stream. I’ll admit that it was very frustrating; I spent most of my time unhooking my y from trees and brush and not from sh. I nally caught my rst and only trout at the end of the day, but I was de nitely “hooked.” It’s not just y shing either, since all aspects and techniques o er their own unique characteristics that must be mastered.

Usually, every year or so, someone will ask me to teach them how to y sh. When that happens, it’s time to think through the process and be able to put it in a simple but clear form, along with actual physical demonstrations of how the process works.

I remember teaching my wife, Sheila, how to sh with tiny jigs for crappies and other pan sh. We were wading the shoreline of a local lake, and I was taking crappies on a pretty regular basis. On the other hand, Sheila was still trying to learn to cast the lure properly and then maintain a tight line to feel the gentle strike of a willing

taker. It took a while, but she soon began to take some crappies-she was “hooked.” Years later now, it’s a rivalry to see who will have the most sh at the end of the day, and rumor has it that I have lost on several occasions.

e point is, that teaching others the di erent aspects of shing makes you think more about what you are doing and why.

Not only that, but seeing others become successful at such an enjoyable activity is also a very rewarding experience for the instructor as well as the person learning the technique.

Not only is it a rewarding experience for the teacher, but it’s also an excuse to justify going shing, and the more you’re on the water, the better.

Wilson to Lead Little League’s Lineup

As May entered its nal days, there was plenty to cheer about on the local sports scene. So ball teams from Jersey Shore, Loyalsock, Muncy, and Williamsport had earned themselves entry into the PIAA state tournament, while South Williamsport’s baseball and so ball teams both remained alive, and the Williamsport Crosscutters were making nal preparations for the 2024 season at Bowman Field.

impact Little League has on the viability of our local area, Wilson’s chief quali cation is that he has local roots. He was raised in Williamsport, played Little League here, attended Bloomsburg University, and once worked for the City’s recreation department before joining Little League.

While the aforementioned teams each possessed rabid fan bases to cheer them on, the most meaningful news emanating as May passed the torch to June was the announcement from Little League International that Patrick W. Wilson has been selected to succeed Steve Keener as the organization’s President and Chief Executive O cer following Keener’s December 31, upcoming retirement.

Wilson joined the Little League sta in 1993 and has since climbed the internal ranks, serving in a variety of capacities, most recently as Chief Operating O cer since 2020. In selecting Wilson for the prestigious post, the Board of Directors lauded him for his organizational leadership, tournament direction, broadcast evolution, international growth and expansion, and player safety experience.

But for those concerned with the overall

Little League Baseball is much more than an event that puts our area on the map for a few weeks each August. It is a multi-milliondollar operation that touches each of our y states and 80 countries around the world. As its home base, Williamsport is a magical word. It is a bucket-list destination for many and has, over the years, been a dreamt-about sought-a er entity for potential relocation.

Fortunately, when those inquiries arose, the four men preceding Wilson at the helm, all maintained their commitment to keeping Little League’s roots rmly planted in local soil.

Its founder, Carl Stotz, followed by Peter J. McGovern, Dr. Creighton J. Hale, and Keener, all led with much di erent personalities and skill sets, which has served Little League and Williamsport well. Stotz’s 1939 creation experienced growing pains at the end of WWII. With limited nancial resources, he sought help as the popularity of Little League was spreading from the East Coast.

Financial help came from the US Rubber Company, which saw the sales potential for its Keds footwear to boom. With the nancial commitment came the entry of McGovern, then a US Rubber employee. e company sent him to Williamsport, where the con ict between Stotz and McGovern eventually led to the founder’s departure from the program.

McGovern’s leadership was stoic but e ective. During his tenure, Little League o ces expanded and moved to their current South Williamsport location. He was the man who penned the Little League pledge. ABC’s Wide World of Sports began its association with the World Series on a tape-delayed basis, and McGovern had long insisted that if Saturday’s game would ever be rained out, it would not be played on a Sunday.

In 1973, Hale succeeded McGovern at the helm. Hale was a Nebraska native educated in Massachusetts but soon became a Williamsporter. He joined Little League in 1955 under McGovern and was known for his safety innovations, including the Little League Batting Helmet.

During his tenure, he played a signi cant role in shaping the organization’s future. He turned potentially damaging lawsuits into successes with the formation of the Little League Challenger Division and the introduction of the So ball program. He could be rm and, at times, a bit stubborn as he long opposed the inclusion of doubleelimination play and adult base coaches but eventually embraced both.

Hale gave Keener his rst Little League experience, providing him with a summer

internship during Keener’s college years and later hiring him to the sta in 1980. Following his 1993 retirement, Keener succeeded him as LLB president.

In his 30-year role, Keener’s leadership and consensus-building skills took Little League to new heights. In 2000, Volunteer Stadium was built, and the tournament eld expanded to 16 teams, which it has since expanded to 20 teams in 2022. He negotiated media contracts with ESPN that provided the organization with additional capital and unprecedented coverage of Little League tournament exposure well beyond what occurs in Williamsport.

As did McGovern with Hale and Hale with Keener, Keener is now passing the torch of leadership to Wilson, who will have challenges to meet himself. e pandemic saw league losses that have not been fully recovered, and the growing popularity of travel ball has caused changes to the Little League rulebook.

As Keener once told me, the uniqueness of leading this worldwide organization is unlike any other CEO position. at the Board of Directors has trusted Wilson to carry on is a win for the Williamsport community — one which he is looking forward to accepting.

“I am looking forward to continuing to lead Little League’s evolution to tangibly bringing our values to life — community, fun, inclusion, integrity, and teamwork — and really live them as an entire organization in 2025 and beyond.”

anks to Steve Keener for his commitment to our area and to Wilson’s steadfastness to the same.

CI has More Wins than ANY other Coach in PA History!

Iwas recently asked to tee it up in a few tournaments. I used to love golf, but now it’s totally different. Yes. I still coach at my alma mater. I continue to enjoy my interactions with the Lycoming College Warriors. I don’t play much personally. It’s cool. I don’t miss it. I’d rather do other things. I don’t remember the last time I golfed with friends just for fun. A few holes with Jensen, and that’s about it. I now stick to scrambles and these member guests.

Course for 15 seasons. I just wrapped up my 17th year at Lycoming. I have played in many individual and team tournaments. I was competitive. I peaked when I was 25. My window is now closed.

I used to be a rather good player. I’m serious. My mom even made me a scrapbook. I golfed in high school, and I played in college. My first real job was with the United States Golf Association. I worked at White Deer Golf

I played three rounds with my good friend Eric Loudenslager. The Corey Creek Member Guest is always on the radar. I will continue to play as long as my gray-haired, free-spirited chum asks me. I love the course, and her people are outstanding. Eric played well. I didn’t. We didn’t light up the scoreboard, but we were respectful. A few may have accused us of bagging.

A few got on me. What happened to Spence? Didn’t he used to win these tournaments? I saw him shank one on ten. There was a
