his is easily my favorite issue of the year, it’s hard not to get emotional thinking about all the fantastic organizations that my co-workers and I get to support this week, from furbabies to actual babies to families and vets and the great outdoors! This week’s issue is just one of the many ways Jimmy helps people and our community throughout the year. He would never talk about how much he does to help the people in and around our community, and he would be super embarrassed if I went into too much detail, but suffice it to say, he helps out a lot, and allowing us to do these pages is really just the tip of the iceberg. So, thank you, Jimmy. Not only for the opportunity you give us to help out our favorite organizations, but for all you do the other 51 weeks of the year for so many people in our area. On to the details about this week’s issue: For the past nine years, Jimmy has given each full-time employee a page of the paper to donate to the charity of their choice. We all get to pick some-
thing that is near and dear to us and donate ad space, editorial space, or a combination of both. As you can see on the cover, we have a variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read through this issue, but here is a quick rundown: Consolidated Sportsman of Muncy Creeks: The Sportsmen manage two trout nurseries in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission at the Faus Nursery in Hughesville and the Bob King Nursery at Roaring Run. Family Promise of Lycoming County: Family Promise of Lycoming County empowers families to become and remain self-sufficient by breaking the cycle of homelessness, provides community awareness and advocacy, and creates mission opportunities for individuals and faith-based communities. Hyner Lodge Foundation: The Hyner Lodge Foundation promotes the Veteran’s wellness and recovery by providing
activities that support the integral health and well-being of the individual. Families and caregivers are allies in their healing and rehabilitation process. Lycoming County SPCA: The mission of Steph the Lycoming CounNordstrom ty SPCA is to protect all domestic animals by providing shelter, emergency treatment, investigation and prosecution of cruelty or abuse complaints, adoption and counseling, education programs, and humane care throughout Lycoming County. Veterans Benefits Center: The Veterans Benefit Center in Lock Haven serves any and all veterans and their families. They offer assistance with: Compensation, Pension, Individual Unemployability, Military Records & Medals, Survivor Benefits, Appeals, and Transition Assistance. YWCA Williamsport: The YWCA supports this community by providing comprehensive and lifesaving services for women, children, and men as they work to rebuild their lives through two signature programs, Liberty House and
Wise Options. Each of these charities means something to the employee that sponsored them. They are all amazing local organizations that are doing what they can to help in our area. So, thank you again, Jimmy. Doing things like this makes me so proud to be a Webb Weekly employee. I hope that as you read through the ads/editorials about these charities, you will consider adding them to your 2025 donation lists if you are able. Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! Do you have your resolutions ready to go? I haven’t had much luck with 2024’s, so we’ll see if can have some better luck in the new year! For those that were keeping up with my Christmas procrastination, you’ll be happy to know that I did get everything done on time! Every present was wrapped, I got dinner on the table and even had time to celebrate proper with family! Hopefully you all had a safe and Happy New Year! Mid-week holidays are always kinda rough, so here’s hoping you didn’t ring in the new year too hard making for a rough Thursday!

– 24-hour Crisis Hotline – (800) 326-8483 – Confidential, Safe and Secure Emergency Shelter – The YWCAʼs Wise Options shelter provides refuge for survivors of violence in a safe and secure site and is the only shelter of its kind in Lycoming County. Rapid Rehousing Wise Options provides survivors experiencing homelessness or attempting to flee with housing search, coordination with landlords, case management, and rental assistance. Counseling & Advocacy Trained counselors and advocates work with survivors as they navigate their paths to rebuild their lives, recognizing every journey is unique. Legal Advocacy Advocates assist survivors through court and hospital accompaniment, providing emotional support, explanation of legal terms and processes, and safety planning.
Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders PFAs are orders used to refrain an abuser from continuing to harm victims. The YWCA is the first and only stop in Lycoming County to obtain and fi le for a Protection from Abuse order. Survivor Support Groups These groups provide opportunities for survivors of domestic and sexual violence to come together and offer one another support through developing trusting and caring relationships. Domestic violence can be any form of violence against an intimate partner. It can be physical, emotional, verbal, economical, spiritual, or sexual. Itʼs not always the visible bruises one can see. Abusers display a variety of behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, and threaten their victims. Domestic violence does not discriminate and happens to both men and women of all ages, races, and various economic back-
grounds. A former Wise Options client shared just how meaningful the program was in their life. “I can now sleep peacefully at night without the fear of physical injury because of what the advocates at Wise Options did for me”. From July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023, the YWCAʼs Wise Options program provided 47,525 nights of safe shelter to adults and children fleeing violence, serving 1,695 individuals – 213 of them were under the age of 18. The YWCA Northcentral PA is dedicated to ensuring their critical and life-saving services are offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The crisis hotline provides emotional support, domestic violence advocacy, community referrals, safety planning and crisis intervention. The hotline is accessible 24/7 by calling (800)326-8483. The Big “Red One”: What to My Wondering Eyes Should Appear By Joseph W. Smith III
“U
p the chimney he rose!” Despite poor reviews and lukewarm receipts, don’t be surprised if Red One quietly climbs “to the top of the wall” as a new Christmas classic. Several weeks past, having noted its dismal rating at Rotten Tomatoes — and its slender box-office take — I decided against seeing this new action-comedy. But in the meantime, friends assured me Red One was actually quite good; so some of them were kind enough to stream it with us after Christmas dinner — even though they’d already seen it the previous evening. What a blast we all had! I really should have paid more attention to that 90% audience-approval at RT — in contrast to 30% with critics. I try not to read reviews before penning my own, but I can hardly imagine what they objected to. This movie does just about everything right. The wonderful J. K. Simmons — who

snagged a well-deserved Oscar for Whiplash and also voiced Santa in the sadly neglected Klaus — plays a buff and lovable Claus who gets kidnapped by … well, let’s keep that under wraps, as it were. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans costar as, respectively, Nick’s staunchest sideman and a self-centered cynic who himself gets hijacked (watch for a nifty pun on that!) into finding the jolly old elf. I’m not alone in suggesting that Red One is a Santa Claus story for Marvel fans. It’s got laughs and exciting action — and it never takes itself too seriously; yet the story certainly pulls on your heartstrings — as any worthwhile Christmas movie must. Indeed, its dual family-redemption subplot works so beautifully that I actually got choked up at the end. Some critics called it predictable; but I completely failed to foresee any of the plot twists — not even the film’s clever explanation about how St. Nicholas delivers all those presents in a single night … via chimney, no less. (And while
we’re on the Santa mythology: Red One happily nods to the current internet hype over the fact that male reindeer shed their antlers in winter; so Santa’s sleigh must be driven by ladies!) Written by Chris Morgan (of the Fast and Furious franchise) and directed by Jake Kasdan (son of Hollywood legend Lawrence), Red One features a sensational, pulse-pounding score. Its excellent supporting cast includes Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt and two young standouts: newcomer Wesley Kimmel as the son of Evans’s Jack; and Kiernan Shipka as a certain she-who-must-not-be-named. (Mad Men mavens might recognize the now-grown-up Shipka from her earlier role as a Draper daughter.) As noted earlier, the friends I streamed it with on 12/25 had already watched it on the night before Christmas. And all through the house, I think they enjoyed it even more the second time. I suppose the film is not quite as clever as critics would have liked. In any case, except for the terrific line about Wonder Woman (which the previews spoiled, ack), it’s not super-hilarious like a lot of other seasonal fare — say Home Alone, Christmas Story or Elf. But I laughed when I saw it, in spite of myself.

Donating to The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a wonderful way to help our veterans gain access to a wide variety of services. The VFW, located at 115 East Main St., in Lock Haven is an accredited benefits center, operating under the National VFW and the VFW Department of Pennsylvania. This center services the north Pennsylvania area with three accredited service officers and three support personnel. Donations to the VFW will assist our Veterans with healthcare enrollment, GI Bill applications, VA work study, filing claims and appeals, personnel and treatment record requests, requests for and presentation of military medals, military research, retirement applications, house calls, and CRSC/CRDP applications. This center will also provide Veterans with emergency assistance requests through collaboration with local and state organizations. The VFW also accepts donations of hospital beds, scooters, walkers, and other ambulatory devices. These items are dispersed as needed to other Veterans in need. Donations are extremely important to our cause and we wholeheartedly appreciate your involvement.

NEW YEARS
A NEW YEAR A NEW RESOLUTION As we begin this new year with a list of resolutions, the most important is a plan for the future. Planning ahead protects those you love from the financial and emotional burden of final arrangements and difficult decision making. Plan for the unexpected. Plan for peace of mind. Plan for your family so they don’t have to.

The Greeks used the winter solstice, and the Romans used the republican calendar on March 1st, which consisted of 10 months and 304 days. Later, in 46 B.C., they switched to January 1st and the Julian calendar, which ran 365 days and held a leap year every fourth year. The list goes on and on. Currently, most of us in Northcentral PA use a Gregorian calendar, and December 31st marks the end of the year. The Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII to replace the Julian calendar so that leap years could be more evenly spaced, which made a year approximately 365.25 days long and more closely followed the Earth’s timeline around the Sun. According to Britannica.com, most European countries followed suit by adopting the Gregorian calendar, with Scotland jumping on board in 1660, Germany and Denmark around 1700, England in 1752, and Russia in 1918. Even now, however, this calendar is not the only way humans measure time. The Chinese New Year begins on the first new moon between January 21st and February 20th. In Thailand, the water festival Songkran is celebrated in April, and Nowruz, celebrated in parts of the Middle East, is held on March 14th, and so on.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, the significance of celebrating the transition from one year to the next goes far beyond the chance to party like it’s 1999 or declaring a list of resolutions that we are highly unlikely to see through. It gives us a chance to start over, even if it is just symbolically. It charts the passage of time and allows us to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. Did you know that the Romans based the name of the month of January on their god, Janus? Janus had two faces, one looking backward and the other looking forward. Perhaps the Romans knew something about resolutions and the idea that it was good to try to rid oneself of poor habits and turn over a new leaf in the new year. While I am not generally a fan of New Year’s resolutions in the sense that people set unrealistic goals without significant planning, I am a fan of renewal. Of forgiveness — both oneself and of others. I believe in the promise of better things to come but also of learning from the mistakes of the past. The passage of time is not something for which to be sad. Rather, cherished for it is extremely limited and precious. So, in all sincerity, I hope that you, your friends, and your family have a great new year.

OUTFITS
en route or pack for the trip, the right knitwear outfit keeps you comfortable and gives off an air of quiet luxury. Gap’s CashSoft Cable-Knit Sweater and Pants come in a really gorgeous evergreen color you can wear together with a long woolen coat and Chelsea boots. You can also pair the sweater with jeans while the pants loosen up a button-down and cardigan combo. Another great travel option is Three Bird Nest’s Set to Go Textured Jumpsuit and Cardigan Set. This comfy jumpsuit features a drawstring waist, tank top sleeves, and a matching duster-length cardigan. Again, wear together, with a striped long-sleeved t-shirt underneath, or wear as separates, throwing the cardi over a blouse and jeans for extra coverage. I also like the idea of a matching sweater vest and pants, like Madewell’s Stockton Sweater Set. This longer knit vest and pull-on pants come in three different earth-toned neutrals and can be layered with a turtleneck and suede clogs for a boho grandma coastal vibe, chic-afield with ballet flats and a blazer, or toughened up with boots and oversized leather jacket. With any sweater vest set, you can style the vest on its own over a dress or blouse and trousers, while the pants can be paired with
a T-shirt and cardigan. Speaking of grandmas, for the mature lady, I’d recommend Amazon seller Tanming’s Sweater 2 Piece Lounge set. This is a short-sleeved knit top with a drop shoulder, side split hem, and breezy fit. The equally flowy bottoms are cropped, wide-leg, and high-waisted for a casual yet elegant look. The piping along the hems and sleeves elevates this knitted pair to be worn out and about for casual gatherings like brunch and makes a great ‘fit for hosting a wintertime shindig. However, unlike the other sets, I’d recommend against splitting these pieces into different outfits. Some sets are meant to be worn together. If you’re unsure, try it out at home. If wearing one piece of a set with something else feels “unfinished,” then you’ve got a wear-together-always set. It can be a pain to figure out how to dress in the winter while still being stylish. These various takes on sweater sets make that work a little easier. In fact, you may say they are the ultimate shortcut to looking casual yet put-together. Plus, for the most part, their mix-and-match potential unlocks a lot of outfitting versatility for the season. The only real challenge is deciding which set is best.

His tweets often received significant engagement, evidenced by millions of likes, retweets, and replies. His posts were also highlighted in many other media sources. But in January 2021, he was no longer president, and immediately, Donald Trump was permanently banned from Twitter for disturbing tweets. The ban would last for the next two and a half years. All this changed after Musk purchased Twitter and renamed it X. No one seemed to like the new name, but it did not bother Musk. He had a long-standing fascination with the letter “X,” evidenced by his SpaceX, Tesla Model X, etc.

was in Moscow in August 1991 with my wife and three children, and after a two-hour wait, we finally were able to get into McDonalds, which had just opened four months before, the first one in Russia. While we were enjoying our Big Macs, my oldest son, David, looked out the window and remarked that tanks were going down the street. I told him that this was the USSR and that tanks on the streets were not exactly unusual. He said, “But, Dad, there are civilians on these tanks!” I jumped up because I knew this was more than unusual; it was history. A coup had just begun; four months later, the USSR collapsed. Very few events change history, and they often do not seem so important at the time they happen. One of these happened in 2022, when Elon Musk bought out Twitter for $44 billion and changed the name to X in March 2023. He paid twice what the company was worth, and many thought buying it was folly. But Musk did not become the richest man in the United States by being a fool. Elon Musk was disgusted that Hunter Biden’s laptop story was considered Russian interference and backed by 51 former high government officials, and any pushback was restricted or banned. The same censoring took place with dissenting narratives toward COVID, DEI, the effects of transition treatments on youth, etc. There were also continual reports of how President Biden was “sharp as a tack.” All of these turned out to be exactly the opposite of what they claimed. It was precisely for this reason that our Founding Fathers prohibited the abridging of freedom of speech in the First Amendment to the US Constitution. Somewhere along the line, this got forgotten because blocking “abiding the freedom of speech” was exactly what had been going on. Putting a stop to this returned Donald Trump to his ability to get his message out freely without “fact checkers” who were consistently wrong. And recently, it saved the American people billions of wasted money from the Continuing Resolution in Washington, D.C. It has been a pattern for Congress to avoid accountability for overspending by waiting until almost the end of the year, then present a griftheavy bill and demanding that it be immediately passed before the year-end
recess under threat of a government shutdown. The first bill was over 1,500 pages long, another legislative trick because no one could digest it in time. But Musk created an artificial intelligence program, Grok, that could and did, and the analysis was posted on X so everyone could see a summary of what was in the bill. Not surprisingly, folks were not too happy when voters saw that Congress would fund a 35% raise for themselves, give more funding for government censorship, give immunity from prosecution for the corrupt J6 committee, etc. They were swamped with complaints. It failed the first time and the second, and finally, the third bill was pared down to one-tenth of the original and was finally passed, and President Biden signed it. The venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya recognized X’s impact: “People are underestimating what happened here. This was a multi-hundred billion dollar grift that was stopped on a dime over 12 hours of tweets. You would have never thought this was possible. To put a dagger in something that big that had so much broad support just a few hours earlier is so consequential in how the United States can run going forward.” (Way to go, Elon Musk! You just made history — and maybe changed it.)

WEIRD WORDS rificed animals. Divination, incidentally, involves foretelling the future or plumbing secret knowledge — and if that haruspex method sounds bizarre, other ancient priests would sometimes consult the flight-paths of birds; and in any case, it’s not much weirder than tea leaves. The word’s final syllable is a form of the common root “spec(t)-,” meaning “to look.” Oryx (AWR-icks [also OAR-icks or OH-ricks], noun) – Various species of African antelope, including the gemsbok (another great word!). Phlox (FLOCKS, noun) – “Weird
Words” tries to live up to its name by avoiding common terms like phlox, a fairly well-known type of showy, colorful flower. But I do love this word — it looks cool, and it is fun to say; plus, in keeping with its bright appearance, it stems from an ancient Greek word meaning “flame.” Roux (ROO, noun) – “A mixture of fat and flour used to thicken sauces” (Random House Collegiate). It’s related to the word russet — for its yellow, brown or reddish color. Scolex (SKO-lecks, noun) – And the winner for this week’s grossest definition: “the anterior, headlike segment of a
word” candidates: “a fleshy clublike spike bearing minute flowers, usually enclosed within a sheathlike spathe, characteristic of aroid plants, such as the calla.” Happily, as so often with unfamiliar terms, the massive and marvelous AHD provides a color illustration to help with this unwieldly definition. And to close out today’s list, I’m throwing in prexy — even though it doesn’t end with X. Another fun word to use and say, it’s a slangy shortened form of president. What’s more, its actual final letter points to our next “Weird Words,” which will follow our X-lists — by focusing on Y and Z.

tapeworm, having suckers, hooks, or the like, for attachment” (dictionary.com). In the fashion of many words ending in X, its plural forms are scoleces or scolices. But let’s be honest — one of these is plenty, thanks. Scramasax (SKRAM-uh-sacks, noun) – Also spelled scramasaxe, this is a single-edged Anglo-Saxon sword or knife. I don’t know about you, but I can almost hear Beowulf whipping out his scramasax to slaughter some underwater beast or dragon. Spadix (SPAY-dicks, noun) – I just have to quote this definition from the American Heritage Dictionary — largely because it contains at least two other “weird

That’s depressing. We can’t go into a brand-new year with a depressing article to read! I won’t have it! Instead, I want to go into the new year being thankful. Yes, it was a hard year, BUT it could have been worse. That’s how I have to look at things. I have a beautiful, healthy family, and we have a roof over our heads, and for that, I am grateful. I am also thankful for you. Yes, you. The one reading this article right now. I can’t thank you enough for your love and support week after week. I am always so blown away by how many of you take the time to read my article each week. You would be surprised by how I hear your stories about loving my articles. I hear about it through friends, families, and co-workers, and it makes me smile from ear to ear. I wish I could share every story, but I will just share a few from this year. My momma told me she was at a wedding in December, and somehow my name got brought up, and this woman realized she was sitting with my family and said how much she just loves reading my articles. This woman asked, “Is Andrea’s Momma here!?” My momma told her she was my momma. My momma is often mentioned in my articles because she is kinda a big deal. *wink wink* But how special for her to mention my momma and get to meet her like she was a local celebrity! Haha. Another one I heard was about another woman walking out of Beiters who saw Jim Webb and his wife. She told them that she makes every single recipe I put out. When I heard this, I said, “What dedication that is!” That meant so much. I hear how some of you call in and

hether you read this before or after that clock turns midnight on New Year’s Eve, Happy New Year! As much as I am so sad to see Christmas ending, I am ecstatic for a brandnew year. Not gonna lie; this year was a rough one. It seemed like one thing just rolled into another month after month. If it wasn’t one thing, it was another. It started literally in the new year with me being so sick that they had to cancel a surgery I had scheduled and postpone it for another three months. I was devastated. That should have been a sign of how the rest of the year would go. If I had known, I would have wanted to just keep a blanket over my head and not come out until the year was over. I also lost one of my biggest fans of my Webb articles. Someone who looked forward to getting the mail each Wednesday so he could read “his girl’s” article that week. This man was my father-in-law, Robert “Bob” Rook, who we lost in August from cancer. Cancer sucks. The whole thing sucked. Watching him decline all through summer was so hard to watch. I miss him telling me how much he loved certain articles and how he would hear his golf buddies talk about my articles, too. He would then tell me how “so and so” read and enjoyed last week’s article. He loved telling people I was his daughter-in-law. I miss his sweet personality and his always calling me “his girl.” Bob will be missed by many. He was truly a loved man. I am not going to sit here and get into details of every little thing that went wrong this year.

was that song. Kenzy and I looked at the lyrics while Chris drove, and we sang our hearts out. The next night, we were going to be with our son Tyler in the car, so Kenzy and I planned on singing this as loud as we could to him in the car to annoy him. He is 15; everything annoys them at this age. The next night, we played the song in the car on the way to dinner, singing this happy, merry song. Ty wasn’t amused, but I know deep down he thought it was funny from the grin on his face. You can’t help but want to sing along. My husband said that song brought back a lot of his childhood Christmas memories. For me, it’s the first I heard that song! It was so fun hearing what song was going to be next. The fact that some man out there took the time to make this thoughtful gift for the Christmas season was so heartwarming! To whoever did this for me, I can’t thank you enough. It was
such a wonderful surprise to kick off the holiday season. I really enjoyed it. Kenzy loved all the kids’ songs you included. My readers truly get to know me and my family. This man knew how much we loved Christmas and took the time to make us our own personal Christmas CDs. It’s awesome. Thank you. Thank all of you! I am so blessed to do what I do and work for such a wonderful business/ family. This year, I’ll be sure to continue writing about family, friends, and crazy Andrea stories because you all know that’s a given. That’s one thing about me. I am who I am in person, as I am when I write. I’ll never not be my true self. I will always tell it how it is or say what’s on my heart. I love you all so very much, and you will never know how grateful I am for you. Be thankful and joyous this new year. God

More dedication from my readers! How can I thank you enough? I hear lots of stories and receive the kindest, thoughtful letters. Thank you for taking the time to do this. It’s so touching. My readers are so thoughtful. Last but certainly not least, this December Steph let me know a reader dropped off some goodies for me, so I stopped by the office to pick it up. It was a yellow envelope with my name on it. Inside was a CD and USB flash drive. On these were Christmas music. Music filled about Santa, the North Pole, and all things Christmas. There were lyrics printed for the very first song, “Must be Santa.” The first song on the CD

f you’ve ever felt an intense sting in your nose or a sharp bite in your toes while out in the cold, it could be more than just normal discomfort. These sensations might be signaling a condition called Raynaud’s phenomenon, also known as Raynaud’s syndrome or disease. This condition affects the small blood vessels in the extremities, causing an exaggerated response to cold temperatures. It leads to spasms in the blood vessels, which result in numbness, throbbing, or tingling, triggered by temperature changes or stress. This is much more than simply having cold hands and feet. In people with Raynaud’s, affected areas like fingers, toes, nose, or ears typically go through a color change — from white to blue to red — as blood flow decreases and then returns. For comparison, normal fingertips may just turn blotchy when warming up after exposure to the cold. While the exact cause of Raynaud’s remains unclear, seeking treatment is important to prevent long-term damage.
Around 5% of Americans experience Raynaud’s, yet only one in five affected individuals seek medical attention. Raynaud’s is divided into two categories: primary and secondary. Primary Raynaud’s is more common and isn’t linked to other health conditions. While not life-threatening, it can cause significant discomfort, which can often be managed with lifestyle changes. Secondary Raynaud’s is less common and is often an early warning sign of a more serious underlying condition, such as lupus, scleroderma, or Sjögren’s syndrome. In severe cases, secondary Raynaud’s can lead to complications like skin ulcers or even gangrene if left untreated. Steps to Take if You Suspect Raynaud’s If you think you might have Raynaud’s, the first step is to consult your primary care doctor or a rheumatologist. After conducting a physical exam and reviewing your health history, your doctor may order blood tests to determine whether your condition is primary or secondary. These tests are usually sufficient for diagnosis and help guide the appropriate treatment. Cold temperatures, smoking, and

stress aggravate Raynaud’s phenomenon. You can help reduce the number of attacks and improve your overall health by following these tips: – Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke – Avoid caffeine because it constricts your blood vessels – When going outdoors in cold weather, be sure to dress warmly – Stress can cause Raynaud’s attacks, so try to minimize it – Don’t use tools that vibrate your hands – Talk to your health care provider about any medications you take that constrict blood vessels Those with Raynaud’s should also pay special attention to their hands and feet. That means having proper-fitting shoes, avoiding injury, and not wearing anything that constricts the blood vessels. Avoid going barefoot, always wear gloves (mittens are best) in the cold, and practice good nail care. For those with primary Raynaud’s, treatment focuses on managing symptoms. Patients are often advised on ways to keep warm and reduce discomfort, such as wearing gloves when handling cold items, dressing in layers to maintain core body temperature and learning stress management tech-
niques. In some cases, medications like calcium channel blockers (which help relax blood vessels) or blood thinners like aspirin may be prescribed. If the condition doesn’t progress within five years, it’s unlikely to lead to more serious complications. For individuals with secondary Raynaud’s, treatment is similar but includes addressing the underlying condition that’s contributing to the symptoms. This might involve additional medications to manage the associated disease. When to Seek Emergency Care If you notice that color isn’t returning to affected areas or experience excessive pain or ulcers, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial. These could be signs that blood vessels are blocked, which requires urgent care. For more information about Raynaud’s, talk to your primary care doctor about further steps for workup and treatment. Williamsport Sun January 2, 1925 City Welcomes the New Year Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.
W
illiamsport welcomed the New Year of 1925 with the old fashioned “Hip, Hip Hurrah!” The bells and whistles of the city blew out the old year of 1924, and brought in the new year of 1925 with the usual
vigor, while New Year’s shooters were in evidence throughout Williamsport. The tin horn crowd, who also had other noise makers, were on the streets where other celebrations were held, were on the streets shortly before midnight — and long afterwards, as in other years, and it was the typical New Year’s Eve celebration that has always
been obtained in Williamsport. All the merrymakers were not all in the street though. The hotels where celebrations were held had their quotas of celebrations and there were programs and other forms of entertainment in the clubs. Those religiously inclined went to church. Most of the churches of the city held Watch Night services and they were well attended. The stay-at-homes with radios heard celebrations in other cities though their speakers, and had a good time by their firesides. The reception was very good. Williamsport “listeners-in”

heard Mayor Hendricks of Philadelphia make a speech and afterward heard the clock in the tower of Independence Hall strike the hour of 12, followed by strokes for 148 years of American independence. Just before the midnight hour too, the chimes of the Trinity Church in New York City came in very clear and strong and a bell ringer played a number of hymns and patriotic numbers. The celebration in Cincinnati was also heard by Williamsport radio fans. The announcer at WBAI station every now and then turned loose Cincinnati’s celebration and there was “some noise.”

NOW OFFERING PERSONAL CARE!
f you are willing to devote the time, you can gain a great deal of knowledge by learning to read what animal tracks can reveal. Whether your goal is to become a better hunter, to develop a better understanding of Mother Nature’s wonders, or to discover just what animals frequent the woods where you hike or hunt, identifying and “ reading” animal tracks can be key. Anytime over the next several months that we have a fresh snowfall will be the perfect time to take a hike and discover the tracks of the various animals that live in or travel through our fields and woods. These tracks tell a story, if we will, but listen. Size variation and pattern differences can identify a whitetail deer track as a buck, doe, or yearling. Distance between tracks can allow you to determine if the animal is merely walking slowly, undisturbed, or that the animal is running for some reason. Usually, deer and other animals travel slowly – listening and watching for predators and seeking food. Over the winter months, wildlife needs to conserve their energy as their fat reserve is slowly used up in the colder temperatures. On a hike several years ago, it became obvious what was happening after closely examining a set of deer tracks. The tracks cut out across an open field on a heavily wooded mountaintop. There was over a foot of snow on the ground, and initially, it seemed there
was no reason for the deer to be running instead of moving at a steady walk. As I backtracked where the deer had come from, the answer presented itself. Parallel and a few feet to the side of the deer tracks lay a fresh set of bobcat tracks. The predator had chased the deer out of the woods, but once it reached the open field, the cat slowed to a walk and then turned and headed back into the forest. For the whitetail deer hunter, the more heavily used deer trails are much more obvious with snow on the ground, and identifying those trails now will help you better plan your next season’s hunts. Most trappers have specific animals that they plan to target over the upcoming trapping season, and fresh snow will quickly show you whether or not those animals are frequenting your area and what their travel patterns are. More than 25 years have passed since I first had the opportunity to hunt for whitetail deer in the renowned destination of Saskatchewan. Over the years prior, I had read numerous articles describing in detail the huge 300-pound class bucks that frequented the woods of this western Canadian province. On the second day of a 5-day hunt, temperatures dipped to -50 degrees Fahrenheit, yet throughout the morning, I watched numerous does and smaller bucks pass within shooting range. It was 11:00 a.m. when I caught a glimpse of a huge-bodied, chocolate-racked buck, and a single shot allowed me to tag a beautiful 9-point monster

coyotes, and a very fresh set of tracks of a very large fisher. The pads on his tracks in the snow were almost two inches across! Finding tracks in the snow and learning how to “read” them is a fun pastime in these winter months. If you are new to the experience or want to learn more, there are numerous ways to hone your skills. Check out the “Pocket Guide to Animal Tracks” by Andy Diamond or the “Field Guide to Tracking Animals in the Snow.” There is also a handy pocket guide entitled “Animal Tracks: A Folding Pocket Guide” that you should be able to find through your local bookstore. that scored over 160 points and weighed 280 pounds after it was field-dressed! One of the other hunters was not as fortunate because over the same 2 days, he saw no deer at all at a location where deer usually frequented. On the third day, the outfitter and I went to that spot to find out why no deer had passed there in days. There in the snow were tracks that I could barely cover with my hand. There was evidence of several animals having passed there recently – and the hair on the back of my neck raised as I realized they were the tracks of wolves! No wonder no deer had been there! On a recent hike through some nearby woods, I found many deer tracks and numerous areas where they were pawing in the snow for acorns. Additionally, there was a set of bobcat tracks, tracks of two different

Sure, you will get wet if you go through, but the suit can keep you and anybody hanging on to you afloat until you can be rescued. They cost a couple of hundred dollars, but it’s money well spent if you are going to get serious about ice fishing. These are just a few safety factors to keep in mind if you want to enjoy some ice fishing. Another safety factor to consider is if the ice surface is very slippery, which is fairly common, you should slip on a pair of spikes. I know of a case some years ago where a friend didn’t put spikes on and slipped, hitting his head and briefly becoming unconscious. Certainly, dressing appropriately for the cold conditions is important, but for the ice fishermen, you may want to go a step further. There are companies that make ice fishing outfits that are not only warm

been my intent to bring events happening in the sports world into your home. I’ve never been one for making brash New Year’s resolutions, but I will continue to do my best to keep you informed in the year ahead. Should you need any help/encouragement with your own New Year’s resolution, perhaps one of the following from a list I came across could be considered: – “Be kinder to myself and learn to love myself more.” – “Do my best. Try to stay positive but forgive myself when I’m not. Try to figure out where the negativity is coming from.” – “Spread more kindness. There’s too much bad going on to waste time being hateful and mean.” – “Save money and budget, eat better, and lose weight.” – “Do more things with my children.” – “Give myself space to learn and create, without worrying about outcome or goal.” – “Travel more.” – “Support local businesses, cook at home more, and be intentional with my contributions to important causes.” – “Take more time for myself mentally and emotionally. I hate being stressed and overwhelmed all the time.” – “Smile more.” – “Stop fighting with people that aren’t worth my time.” – “Learn to stop blaming myself when things go wrong, especially when I know I did everything right.” Wishing you and yours the very best for a happy and healthful 2025!

strong strength of schedule. PSU is happy with their ‘white-out’ win, but can you imagine what the excitement would have been for a date with Alabama instead of the SMU Ponies? Of the eight remaining teams, Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State were ranked 1-6 in the final poll prior to the tournament’s start. Boise State was ranked #9, and Arizona State was ranked #12. Not only were fans of the teams that made the tournament excited, but each of the universities will be smiling as their bank accounts receive hefty deposit slips. The new 12-team playoff format comes with the following revenue distribution model: – $4 million for each of the 12 teams that make the College Football Playoff – $4 million for each of the 8 teams that make the Quarter Final Round – $6 Million for each of the 4 teams that make the Semi-Final Round Additionally, each team participating in the College Football Playoff receives $3 million to cover expenses for each round. Each conference receives $300,000 for each of its schools whose football team meets the NCAA’s APR (Academic Progress Rate) for participation in a postseason game. Each independent institution also receives $300,000 if its football team meets the same standard. As the calendar flips to 2025, I thank you for allowing me to visit with you each week. appy New Year, kids. Special thanks to those who are fans of this page. I am truly humbled by all of your feedback
and praise. I want to give some love to a few — props to the boss man Jim and my lovely editor Steph for allowing me to partake. I am a part-time scribe for them, and these great folks allow me to improvise. Jim is the big brother I never had. I only hear from him when I do something great or something terribly bad. He has been a great mentor. I appreciate his friendship, encouragement, and trust. Although I only see her a few times a year, Steph and I are good buds. We correspond quite often, and she routinely keeps me up to par. Steph is the brains of the operation. Duh. I have been with Webb since her beginning. Jim pitched an idea while I was working at White Deer Golf Course. I provided the copy and designed our advertisements. I would update the folks on some of our tournaments and throw in a few stories about some of the charismatic members. I did this every week for ten great seasons. The pages were called “Notes from the Greenside Bunker.” My proud mother actually made a scrapbook of many of these entries. I
often look back at them and smile. This was the start of our relationship. Jim and Steph asked me to go full-time several years back. It has been a lot of fun. I hit 300 articles earlier this year. That’s a big deal. They will occasionally ask me to do a cover story. These are special assignments on local sporting celebrities. Sometimes, it’s a feature on a team or a youngster who claimed recent PIAA gold. There’s a lot more pressure associated with these projects. I always do the best I can. One of my favorite pieces was on the legendary Coach Frank Girardi’s enshrinement to the College Football Hall of Fame. That one won me an award. I am dead serious. It’s now in a frame. My friends give me the freedom to write about whatever. My weekly writeups vary, and sometimes, I turn a few heads. I have covered just about everything with sports. Professional to amateur. I have penciled many articles on local football and basketball. I also chimed in on high school wrestling and baseball. I even told a few tales about some throwers and pickleball, too. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know many of the young athletes and coaches in the area. It keeps me in the loop. My article on a Brazilian foreign exchange student
set all kinds of records. Our international online views went up 1,450%. I do get to scribe about fishing and my love for the great outdoors. Hiking with Jensen has been a popular topic. We are so blessed to Jamie live in such a beautiful Spencer area. My chums sometimes take me on their adventures after I promise to mention their names. J Britt introduced me to ice fishing, and Ian got me into trolling for walleyes. Austin took me bassing on the Susquehanna, and Kennedy saved the day. The Spanglers take great care of me. We fish tons. My Unbelievable Fishing Story also won me some hardware. Yes. There is never a dull moment. How many others watched the very first MLB Little League Classic from a kayak? Or caught a monster smallmouth under the lights? Oh, the memories. My three-week rant, “Setting the Record Str8,” got me into trouble. I no longer push the envelope. Or I have to give a heads-up. Several folks applauded my perspective on the County’s decision to take over the golf course, but two guys got really mad. Time heals. We have since made up. My boy Alize Johnson has the most tallies. I believe there are eight articles

on this extraordinary lad. I wrote about him while he was in high school and when he was with the Missouri State Bears. Alize became the first from the area to be drafted by the NBA. Major headlines. He routinely gives back to the community, and his new basketball courts earned a front-page spread. Alize continues to amaze. He has an annual Thanksgiving benefit to help the less fortunate and buys team shoes for local hoops squads. But his little brother is closing in. I think Davion now has six. My favorite subject is my family. Jensen is fifteen and acts more like his dad — poor kid. Many articles I submit are about his sports. Teach doesn’t like the spotlight, so I refrain from using her name. I love sharing our stories. Whether it’s Xbox or Fortnite. Elf on the Shelf or Santa. Our trips to Yellowstone or Yosemite. Sometimes, we just hang out in the 17728. I have enjoyed the feedback from my recent stories. From Amish Relations to building a two-garage with my 70-year-old pops. They are all great. The Spencers make some interesting copy. I was never a fan of writing. It was my worst subject growing up. That’s why I love it when folks recognize me from this page. Humbling. I owe a lot to my great team at the Webb Weekly. It has been a pleasure. Looking forward to many more tales in 2025. Cheers.
