Director’s welcome
Principal Sponsor – National Express East Anglia
Welcome This is my first year as artistic director and I’m thrilled to be taking the helm of one of the UK’s most diverse and dynamic arts festivals. NNF11 sees the world come to your doorstep, with performances and art from five continents and more exclusives than ever before: theatre from Iran, Argentina and France, dance from Thailand and Spain, and music from Moscow, Kinshasa and Reykjavik… This year’s programme is packed with life-changing experiences – whether you choose to venture down the rabbit hole at Dining with Alice, party the night away at the Festival Spiegeltent, or see opera through the eyes of a toddler at the remarkable BabyO, you can see, hear and feel it here first. We’ve got the best in new performances, with a raft of premières, fabulous flamenco from Ballet Nacional de España, stunning Thai dance from Pichet Klunchun and feats of derring-do with Cantina in the Festival Spiegeltent. Once again we’ll be taking to the streets and this year’s May Daze programme will turn familiar spaces around Norwich into a huge outdoor spectacle. Don’t miss the fantastic world première of The Wolves by Deabru Beltzak, Bilbao’s anarchic pioneers, or the gravity-defying Festival finale brought to you by Wired Aerial Theatre and the director of the Sydney Olympics’ closing ceremony.
Museum and there’s even the chance to win a real cash prize in Joshua Sofaer’s Street Hunt. The Norfolk & Norwich Festival is one that aims to enrich and transform people’s lives and this year there are more opportunities than ever before to take part in events – as a volunteer stewarding a big outdoor show, as a singer in the Festival Chorus or the Voice Project choir, or as a performer in Dining with Alice. The Festival’s pioneering work with young people continues. Be sure not to miss the Children’s Choice Awards, where a jury of 10-year-olds will decide which are the best Festival shows. Look out for these young VIPs at performances throughout the Festival and be sure not to miss their glitzy, Oscars-style awards ceremony. NNF11 would not have been possible without our fantastic Festival team, our board, our army of volunteers, or our co-producers and partners, nor without the imagination and generosity of our funders, sponsors and patrons. And, of course, you the audience. You make the Festival and it’s made just for you... Enjoy! William Galinsky Artistic Director
Nothing engages more with our landscape and surrounding environment than this year’s visual arts programme. Invisible Dust brings together artists and environmental scientists from the UEA, Sorrel Muggridge takes you on thoughtful walks along the river, and London Fieldworks creates fantastical new homes for the city’s birds. You can see major exhibitions at NUCA, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, the Castle

Staff Benda Bilili with support from Ayannna Witter-Johnson Wednesday 18 May 8.00pm Norwich Theatre Royal Tickets £18, £15, £12, £5.50, U25s £5 Congolese super-band Staff Benda Bilili returns to play a string of live dates around the nationwide release of feature film Benda Bilili. Staff Benda Bilili’s inspirational live shows and extraordinary story have caused a stir around the globe. The band name translates as ‘look beyond appearances’. A group of paraplegic street musicians who live in and around Kinshasa zoo in the Democratic Republic of Congo, they consider themselves the real journalists of Kinshasa.
Principal Sponsor – National Express East Anglia
Their songs document and comment on everyday life, and resonate with the pulse of Congolese rumba, Cuban swing and at times the Godfather of Soul himself. At the heart of the group are four singer/guitarists perched on spectacular customised tricycles, backed by an energetic rhythm section, and topped off with the infectious guitar-like sounds of a teenage prodigy who plays a onestringed electric lute he designed and built himself out of a tin can.
Support for Staff Benda Bilili comes from Ayannna Witter-Johnson. Bristling with soul, and startlingly original, live she’s a knockout delight. In 2010 she won the Talent Night at the Harlem Apollo, following in the footsteps of legendary performers from Ella Fitzgerald to James Brown, Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill. An NNF night you won’t want to miss! The performance will finish at approximately 10.15pm
The band triumphed at the Cannes Film Festival last year with Benda Bilili, a full-length feature film directed by Renaud Barret and Florent de la Tullaye (aka Belle Kinoise). The critically acclaimed film was released in March.

Set in the seediest of drinking holes, Cantina explores the rapture and torture of desire, and the tension between harsh reality and escapist fantasy. The inhabitants of Cantina find refuge in this late-night world of seduction, sweat and tequila. Their extraordinary feats contrast with the heartbreak of their lives.

The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church Daniel Kitson Monday 16 May 8.00pm Norwich Arts Centre All tickets £10 (seated) Written and performed by Daniel Kitson Gregory had 57 letters to write. He’d never written that many letters, not in one go. In fact, he’d never written a single letter and it was taking significantly longer than he’d anticipated. He’d started, full of optimism, curiously enough, at 9am and now here he was eight hours later, half-way through letter 24. He glanced at his watch and then at the noose hanging over his head. Gregory sighed. Had he known how long suicide letters take, he thought, he wouldn’t have cancelled the milk for the morning. The story of a death postponed by life. The Black Sheep Professor Bumm’s Story Machine Saturday 7 – Sunday 8 May 11.00am & 2.00pm Norwich Playhouse All tickets £6 Family ticket £18 Suitable for ages 6+ When their Story Machine goes spectacularly wrong, Professor Bumm and his assistant Doctor Whee turn ideas from the audience into hilarious new stories. Following appearances on BBC1’s The Slammer and a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival, this crackpot hit comedy will have the whole family crying with laughter! The performance lasts approximately 65 minutes
“Full of clever word play, silly jokes and mad improvisations” The Guardian
Fleur Elise Noble 2 Dimensional Life of Her Saturday 14 – Sunday 15 May 11.00am, 3.00pm & 6.00pm each day Norwich Playhouse All tickets £6 Family ticket £18 Suitable for ages 7+
“Brilliant, provocative… stunning” The Herald, Scotland
Set in an artist’s studio, 2 Dimensional Life of Her imagines a rich, parallel world where drawings reproduce themselves, drift between surfaces and move in and out of three dimensions. You’ll be immersed in a world made of floor-to-ceiling projections, mesmerising animations and walls that simply peel away. Standing at the centre of this work of light and shadows, you will find your sense of reality teased and blurred. The performance lasts approximately 40 minutes
