“Ahhhh . . . FALL! This is definitely my favorite time of year, and it is so beautiful in Michigan! Orange is my favorite color, so the trees look especially great to me in autumn. I’m also a fan of putting on a sweatshirt or bulky sweater to spend a crisp evening by a bonfire. As a football fan, I cannot wait to see my Lions play. There’s the anticipation that this could be the year—I have a good feeling about it!
I’m going to brag a little, now. I have joined the grandparents club! My son Gavin and his wife Andi have brought Nixon Michael into my life, and I am head over heels in love. Can’t get enough of the little guy!

SECOND IS C AR SENSE
We have a very special feature in this issue: Women in Business. National Business Women’s Week is the last full week in October, and we are saluting many local women who are members of the business community in numerous ways. Read their profiles and discover how they got where they are. You might just be inspired to take that step!
It’s also important to remember that October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Too many people are not safe in their own homes because of abusive partners. Read our article on the Catherine Cobb Safe House in Adrian and learn more about this heartbreaking problem and how you can help.
More than ever, we want to thank our advertisers and encourage you to support local business whenever you can. They are keeping us going!
Wishing everyone a happy fall!”

If you are or you know someone who is mechanically inclined, we have a great opportunity for you to work with technicians who have been there, done that. Je Layman not only has owner/managerial experience of over 40 years but also automotive hands-on. Kerry Kelly started right out of high school and has learned everything bumper to bumper from his mentors: Harold Shewman and Steve Rogers. I started after college to be an accountant, so I may not have done it all, but I can almost say “I’ve seen it all,” lol, and as a crew we gure out how to do it—Git-R-Done ! Our newest mentor and young gun, Justin Slade, has the racing name we all know and the knowledge that goes with that as well as eight years hands-on. So come join our team, jump start your future, learn with us, laugh with us, grow old with us. Also hiring an assistant manager: if you like people, talking on the phone, computer work, organization, and challenging your administration skills, come see me!

Betty DeLong, NP Never too late to start again
Story by Elyse Apel Photos by Synergy In Motion
After spending nearly 30 years as a nurse, Betty DeLong decided to go back to school.
“After working for that long as a nurse, I decided I wanted to do more with my career and expand my capabilities, so I could work more independently,” Betty says.
Now Betty works at ProMedica Coldwater Urology office, a job she became passionate about during clinical rotations.
The medical field has always been close to Betty’s heart, especially after seeing many family members suffer from different medical issues.
“There is a strong family history of diabetes and my mother died of a heart attack at the age of 33. So those health care things really drew me to medicine,” she says.
After growing up in Michigan and graduating high school in 1987, Betty decided to pursue nursing as a career.
“In 1988, I started my prerequisites for nursing assistant,” Betty says, “Then, in 1990, I graduated with my associate’s degree from Kellogg Community College.”
A single mom of four kids, Betty decided to finish her undergraduate degree in 2000, graduating in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
“The biggest challenge was trying to find time,” she says.
Throughout her career, Betty worked in many different locations from an operating room in Coldwater to an intensive care unit in Jackson.
“The fortunate thing about nursing is you can move around since there are plenty of opportunities and variability,” Betty explains.
In 2014, she finished her Master of Science in nursing from Spring Arbor University, officially becoming a nurse practitioner.
Dr. Kevin Brewton played a very influential role in leading Betty to urology, Betty says.
“I worked in the operating room for about ten years as a nurse with Dr. Brewton, a local urologist,” she explains. “He knew I was going to school, so he would encourage me to come to his office to do a rotation and I ended up doing that.”

Following a few months working with Dr. Brewton on a rotation, Betty decided she wanted to continue working in urology.
“After about six months, Dr. Brewton decided he needed someone to work for him and I was ready to take that step,” she says.
The urology department at ProMedica offers a wide variety of services for its patients. The department has expertise in both male and female urological conditions including kidney stones, cancer, bladder issues, vasectomies, infertility, prostate health, and sexual dysfunction.
Betty says one of the biggest challenges for urology care providers is when patients hold off on getting annual physical check-ups or going to the doctor when they first start feeling sick.
“Sometimes you do a biopsy and it shows a very aggressive prostate cancer and it’s widespread,” she says, “It’s disheartening.”
Betty says she tries with each patient to improve both their health and overall well-being, which is also ProMedica’s commitment to all its patients.
“I get to accomplish something with my patients when they come in with a specific problem,” she says. “We can often look at simple behavior things and change those, but sometimes something like physical therapy is required.”
The patients that come into her office are Betty’s top priority at all times.
“I treat my patients like they were my own family,” she says. “We are always looking out for them. We call and check up on them and make sure they are doing okay.”
Betty says that valuing patient time is very important for her office, with patients often having less than a five-minute waiting period.
“I talked to one patient yesterday when I came in and they said they had never seen a provider come in before the appointment time.”
Betty has been a key leader in introducing new services to the ProMedica Coldwater Urology office. Recently the office added Bladder BOTOX® to the list of services provided.
“It is a service that we provide to women who are experiencing incontinence. While some may feel embarrassed by this, it is something that a lot of women deal with after having children or as we age. I want to provide a solution for them and let them know that they don’t have to just accept the issue,” Betty says.
This simple 20 – 30 minute, minimally invasive procedure involves a shot that is administered directly into the bladder muscles. There is no surgery or slings and no recovery time.
“I have had patients get the procedure and contact me after to tell me that they feel like a new woman. That is empowering and I am grateful I get the opportunity to help them feel that way.”
That isn’t the only state-of-the-art procedure that has been recently added to the office. The UroLift® is a small implant that helps men who suffer from an enlarged prostate and is a way to lift and hold the tissue out of the way and increase the opening of the urethra.
This procedure is done in the office without cutting or removing tissue or heating. This benefits patients who have Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (or BPH) and experience a weak or slow urinary stream, urgent feelings of needing to urinate, or difficulty or delayed starting of urination.
In her free time, Betty enjoys spending time with her family. “My grandkids are my life outside of work,” she laughs. Betty also loves spending time outside.
“I love to do homestead things,” she says. “I have a small flock of birds and a garden.”
ProMedica has many different locations throughout Ohio and Michigan providing urological care throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Betty works at the ProMedica Coldwater Urology office.

All About Layers
It’s
Autumn and winter forecasts can be nearly impossible to predict. One minute it’s cloudy and freezing, and the next, the sun is shining and you are burning up under a sweater. Instead of dressing for one extreme or another, layering clothes can help keep you prepared for anything and everything.
Layering also gives you the opportunity to play around with the pieces that are already in your wardrobe. Give yourself permission to experiment with different textures, fabrics, weights, patterns, and colors, and the outfit possibilities are endless.
→ Continued on next page...
the 13
Focus on Fabrics
Texture within layering is essential, especially if your outfit is all one color. Varying textures, for instance, will add depth and contrast, and you can avoid looking flat or bulky.
Tone it Down
When overlapping your clothes, it is best to work with two colors. Or, you can blend similar shades and hues to help make your outfit look more put together. Black and white are essential. If you like a splash of color, however, there are many bold combinations that will not clash. For instance, pale blue and pink, tan and maroon and red and blue.
14
And most importantly…remember there is no right or wrong way! You wear what works for you. You want to wear an outfit with five colors and multiple prints? Do it!
Add Accessories
Accessories such as jewelry, belts, and scarves can complete and freshen your look. Adding a few different length necklaces has became the new way of making a statement.

Brush Cleaning 101
16
Here is the dirty little secret to make up brush cleaning -- it is quicker and less painful than you think! Most of us have the cleaning items in the cupboards already, so grab those dirty brushes and let’s give them the cleaning they deserve.
needed items:
1 small glass bowl
1/2 teaspoon professional shampoo
7 drops tea tree Essential Oil
2 hand towels
STEP 1
Place shampoo and tea tree oil into glass bowl.
STEP 2
Rinse brush bristles under running water to make them damp.
STEP 3
Lightly dip brush into mixture. Using the palm of your hand, gently rub the brush in a circular motion on your palm. You should begin to see the old make up coming off into your palm.
STEP 4
Place brush under running water while continuing to swirl the brush on your palm. Continue until both the water and your palm are clear.
STEP5
Once clear, vigorously rub the brush handle back and forth between your hands to reshape brush.
STEP 6
Use the hand towels to help the brush air dry. The first towel should be opened and laid flat on an open surface. Then fold the second towel into thirds and place along the edge of the first. Lay the brush with the handle on the folded towel. This allows the water to run out of the bristles and not into the head of the brush.
Note — For smaller brushes that are used around eyes, nose, and mouth, you’ll need to go the extra mile to eliminate bacteria. Once a month they should be soaked in a cup of 70% rubbing alcohol for a maximum of 10 minutes then dried as directed above.
Finding time to clean brushes properly can be difficult, but they should be cleaned at least once a week to prevent infections or breakouts caused by using a dirty brush.

Comfort Keepers
by Elyse Apel
Uplifting Care Services
Six years ago, Butch Irwin decided after 26 years as a home care respiratory therapist to open a Comfort Keepers franchise in Southeast Michigan, focused on interactive caregiving and bringing joy and comfort to each and every one of their clients.
“He’s always had the desire and dream to help people,” Niki Irwin, Butch’s daughter and general manager, says.
This desire to help provide communities with quality homecare first began when Butch was a child and had to watch his grandfather struggle with crutches after having his leg amputated as a result of a motorcycle accident.
So, when a friend approached Butch with the idea of opening his own Comfort Keepers franchise in 2015, he decided it was exactly the next step he was looking for.
The Irwin family is originally from Toledo, Ohio, but Butch had always dreamt of moving to Southeast Michigan. He spent a lot of time in the Irish Hills during his childhood and high school years visiting his family’s lake cottage and fell in love with the area.
“When he was looking into an area that he could join and help people, he noticed that the southeast area of Michigan, including the Irish Hills, was open,” Niki explains. “Moving to the Irish Hills has always been his dream.”
Niki says serving people has also always played a key role in her life. Before Comfort Keepers, she was working as an assistant to a quadriplegic business owner who suffered from multiple sclerosis. She offered help in his personal life as a caregiver and in business life as his administrative director, which helped prepare her for her current role in Comfort Keepers.
“This is my absolute dream job and I really couldn’t ask for anything better,” Niki says. “Being able to make sure each client is taken care of is so rewarding.”
Comfort Keepers is a franchise system with over 700 franchises nationwide. Butch’s franchise services the Jackson, Lenawee, Hillsdale, and Monroe counties. This family-owned and run business now employs about 40 employees, all working to provide Southern Michigan
communities with the most compassionate and professional non-medical, in-home care.
Comfort Keepers offers many different types of in-home services to its patients like rehabilitation services after injury or illness, respite care, end-of-life care, and ongoing care for someone disabled by mental or physical condition.
Interactive caregiving, which is trademarked by Comfort Keepers, is the focus of all their services and interactions.
“Interactive Caregiving stands us out from our competitors,” Niki says. “It is a model of doing WITH instead of doing FOR. It’s going in and instead of just doing the tasks on a list, it’s involving the client as much as possible and keeping them active mentally, physically, and emotionally.”
Though Comfort Keepers is a non-medical service, medication reminders are done routinely. They also help with many household tasks.
“We help with light housekeeping, meal preparation, bathing, grooming, and so much more,” Niki says. “Safety assurance is our highest priority.”
Niki explains that the most underestimated service Comfort Keepers provides is companionship, something many clients lack because of limitations on their ability to get out of the house.
“Family members don’t realize the impact we can have on elevating the human spirit through companionship and interactive caregiving.”
The company currently works with Veterans Affairs to get connected with clients and have their visits covered. They also accept some long-term care policies.
Outside of work, Butch loves spending time with his wife, their six adult children, and 13 grandchildren.

For Wild Birds Water
By New Media Retailer
Water is critical for attracting and nourishing birds in your yard. While not all birds may visit the same feeders or prefer the same foods, they all need water for drinking and bathing. It is easy to provide water for birds, and it can be surprising to see how many different species take advantage of the liquid refreshment.
Why Birds Need Water
Birds need water for several reasons. Drinking adequate amounts of water helps birds stay healthy and hydrated, promotes efficient blood circulation, improves digestion, and regulates body temperature. Some birds, however, get all the liquid they need in their diet from the foods they eat. Raptors get moisture from the blood of their prey, hummingbirds get water from floral nectar, and many desert birds, such as roadrunners, get moisture from plant buds and cactus blooms they may eat.
Even if birds don’t need water for drinking, however, they do need it for bathing. Regular baths help control feather parasites and keep a bird’s feathers in top condition for efficient, aerodynamic flight. Bathing also helps birds keep cool, which is critical during the hot summer months.
There are many different ways to offer water to birds in the yard, and birds will take advantage of different water sources. The most popular options include…
Waterers – These closed-reservoir water sources, similar to hummingbird feeders, offer easy drinks, with the water released gradually through pressure and gravity. Smaller songbirds, such as finches and sparrows, happily visit hanging waterers.
Bird Baths – The most familiar water source in a backyard, bird baths come in all sizes, shapes, and styles. These openbasin water sources offer space for birds to both drink and bathe, and many types of birds of all sizes will use bird baths.
Misters – Light, fog-like sprays of water offer a fly-through bath and burst of cool for birds to enjoy. Smaller birds, particularly hummingbirds, appreciate misters, which can be positioned to spray foliage for a cool surface for larger birds to rub against.
Drippers – A slow, steady drip of water into a basin or against a splash rock will attract the attention of many birds, especially ground species such as thrashers, doves, and many thrushes. Drippers can easily be positioned to drip into a bird bath, helping keep the basin full.
Fountains – The noisy trickle and tinkle of water in a fountain can attract many birds as well as be a beautiful focal point in a bird-friendly yard. Simple fountains can be added to basins, or more elaborate fountains and weeping rocks are popular choices for many birds and birders.
Ponds – A larger pond is a great water feature to attract ducks or wading birds such as rails, egrets, and herons. A naturalized pond with native plants will be best, but the edges should be shallow enough so birds can approach the water comfortably.
Streams – A flowing stream is a more elaborate water feature but will be a magnet to many birds, particularly if the water trickles over shallow areas and flat rocks where birds can safely drink and bathe. All types of birds might visit even a small backyard stream.
Any water is better than no water at all for birds, but moving water, such as a dripper or fountain, is even better because the sparkles and noise of the motion will help attract more species. Flowing water, such as a larger fountain or stream, is best of all, as it will not only attract more birds, but will stay naturally cleaner and more appealing to all types of birds.
Tips for Bird-Friendly Water Sources
Water for birds must be clean and safe, as disease can easily spread through dirty water. To keep all water sources birdfriendly:
• Clean and disinfect water sources and wet surfaces every week with a weak chlorine solution, rinsing them thoroughly and allowing them to dry before refilling.
• Do not add any decontamination chemicals, algae blockers, deicers, or insect repellants to water birds will drink or bathe in, as those chemicals can be toxic and deadly to birds.
• Clean and inspect filters, hoses, and pumps on moving water sources regularly to ensure their efficient operation, and replace worn out parts as needed.
• Use multiple water sources throughout the yard to attract the most birds and to appeal to birds with different drinking and bathing preferences.
• Keep basins no more than 2-3 inches deep so most birds can easily access the water. Just 1-2 inches deep is ideal for most smaller birds like finches and sparrows.
• Consider using heated water sources for winter birds, such as fully heated baths or immersion heaters rated for outdoor use, to provide a liquid source of water during cold months.
• Add blocks of ice to bird baths during the hottest months to keep the water cool and fresh, and to refill the basin slowly as water evaporates throughout the day.
The more water that is available, the more birds will visit the yard for refreshing drinks and baths. Many experienced birders are surprised at how many birds visit when new water sources are added, and using a variety of sources is a sure way to increase the size and diversity of any backyard flock.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP
Sleep is something that we are all aware we need, but we may not understand its importance. Sleep is an important function of our bodies at any age. Sleep can affect almost every aspect of our whole being. Without ample sleep, our metabolism, immunity, mental functioning, and even capability to deal with chronic disease can be compromised. How many hours of sleep an individual should get is based on age. Adults should get on average seven to nine hours of sleep each night.
There are many things people can do to try to work towards getting a good night’s rest. Many of these are not related to medication. Keeping a schedule is a great way to help get your body and mind into a routine, including sleep. Try keeping the same routine and timing before bed. Whether you eat at a certain time, shower, read, and then go to bed or do other things, consistency is key. It helps to trigger your mind and body to get ready to sleep after doing X, Y, and Z.
Limiting caffeine intake also can help. Try to stop drinking caffeine at least four to six hours before bed time. Do not smoke before bed. Nicotine also stimulates the body and the effects can take a few hours to wear off.
Eating large meals before bed can cause problems falling asleep as well. Limiting devices such as cell phones, computers, and televisions before bedtime is a good idea. These devices can emit blue light which effects the secretion of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps tell your body to go to sleep. An individual should also try limiting daytime naps. While you do not have to eliminate them, try reducing them to an hour or less a day and not doing it later in the afternoon.
Lastly, create a restful environment where you choose to sleep. Make your bedroom a calming, safe, quiet place. You may use certain scents that are calming and relaxing, meditation, journaling, darkening shades, earplugs, eye covers, or fans. You get to choose what works best to make your environment comfortable!
If you have trouble getting to sleep, staying asleep, or do not feel rested when you wake, please discuss this with your health provider. They may be able to help you formulate a plan to reach your sleep goals or even order further testing to rule out underlying conditions that are preventing you from acquiring quality sleep.

Life is the Berries Wherever We Go
I puff out my cheeks, blowing a stray strand of hair out of my face. Why didn’t I check the date of my biggest-selling festival before I booked the author signing at the library instead? Library book signing can be notorious for dismal crowds. I will honor my word by showing up where I signed up, but I need to lose my irritated attitude.
“Lord, will you give me a divine appointment today, so I can adjust my mindset for missing my largest event? Please shake off my frustration,” I pray traveling to the book signing.
On arrival, the author tables run side-byside so we can visit amongst each other and patrons. What an amazing line-up of local authors! Roger Yoder – Mr. Detroit Tiger Expert, Dan Bisher – Mr. Radio Voice and Hillsdale historian, Penny Neer – Olympic athlete and author, Ruth Kyser – prolific Christian romance novelist, Phil Monahan – Nitro the NWA wrestling champion with an autobiography, Elizabeth Burr – the high-functioning autism author, Ramona Hammel – a promoter of her mom’s legacy. I cherish meeting each author and the friendly staff at the library. My mindset shift improves immensely.
A library patron walks in with her son. She squints her eyes studying my face. “I know you from somewhere. I got it! You and your
friend did a concert at a jail ministry,” she professes boldly.
She tells me about hitting her lowest point in life, trapped in a pit of despair, addicted to opioids, imprisoned for crimes she regretted. Six years ago, she sat in the audience as Regina Holroyd and I sang and signed a concert for the jail. I spoke a message of hope in Jesus Christ. Rondee described us as shining with hope. She longed for the same joy. She did not feel judged but loved. It started her changes. She dragged herself to Bible studies offered in the jail where she journeyed to forgiveness, discovering peace in a relationship with Jesus. Forgotten Man jail ministries impacted her forever.
Jesus set Rondee free!
Now she walks in forgiveness, overcame her drug addiction, loves parenting her son, advocates for others struggling with addiction, supports her community, and lives in freedom. Jesus saves! We huddle praying and praising together, relishing our divine appointment that God arranged. I invite them to our church. Her family comes and loves worshipping together.
I am inspired to keep forging ahead, sharing Jesus’ love wherever God leads – in a jail, at a loud festival, or at a quiet library book signing.

ATHLETICO’S FLUIDOTHERAPY
POSTURE: WHAT EVERY STUDENT SHOULD KNOW
PHYSICAL THERAPY VS. COVID-19
By: Holly Hendershot, OT Hillsdale
What is Fluidotherapy?
By: Chas S. Frey PT, DPT, Biomedical Dry Needling Cert. - Hudson, MI
By: Chas S. Frey PT, DPT, Biomedical Dry Needling Cert. Hudson, MI
Do you remember when it was appropriate to shake someone’s hand, give a high five, hug loved ones, sit within six feet from others, or be able see individuals’ smiling faces? Well, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Fluidotherapy is a modality used during treatment sessions for the upper extremities that consists of fine particles in combination with dry heat to simulate a whirlpool effect without the use of water. When utilizing the fluidotherapy machine, it typically reaches up to approximately 105°F. The use of this high intensity heat can be used for various reasons such as reducing pain symptoms and desensitization of the skin along with the reduction of swelling.
Manual Therapy:
It is hard to believe we have passed the one-year mark since COVID-19 was first announced to be a global pandemic. Many changes have occurred over the last year to accommodate this new virus in order to attempt living out daily activities. All aspects of health care and scientists from all parts of study have been working around the clock to help provide care and new innovations for battling COVID-19.
Summer is flying by and many students will be headed back to the classrooms over the next few weeks meaning many students will be in a seated position for extended periods of time. Sitting for long periods of time can place stresses and strains on the musculoskeletal system especially with bad posture. Bad posture can include a forward head position, forward rounding of both shoulders, poor contact of feet on floor, and/or a slouched trunk. Bad posture can lead to increased chances for back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, jaw pain, and even changes in breathing patterns. Pain can eventually lead to poor concentration when trying to listen to a lecture and could potentially lead to poor academic performance levels.
1) Torso and chest wall mobilizations
2) Torso manipulations
3) Trigger point release to taught muscle fibers
Vestibular Training
What diagnoses respond well to Fluidotherapy?
Tips to keep in mind to support good posture:
• Both feet can be comfortably flat on the floor.
Today, we have gained a lot of knowledge about this virus and have obtained insight on common signs and symptoms. Some of the symptoms may include running a fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headaches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, running nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. However, as with any new virus, it takes time to understand fully the degree to which it impacts individuals. Until that time, physical therapy can offer assistance to those who have been affected by COVID-19 by managing muscle strength, heart and lung capacity, pain, balance, endurance, and overall functional abilities.
• Knees slightly lower than your hips.
• Trunk upright with slight curvature in your lower back.
Fluidotherapy is used for patients that have musculoskeletal or nerve-related injuries of their upper extremities. It can be very beneficial for patients with chronic arthritis, fractures of the fingers and wrist, carpal tunnel syndrome, lateral and medial epicondylitis, DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis, and many other orthopedic injuries.
• Shoulders slightly back.
HOW WE CAN HELP:
• Avoid a forward head position.
• Avoid tilting your head excessively down or to the side
Exercise:
1) Strengthening muscles that assist with breathing
What can I expect at my treatment sessions?
2) Upper and lower body strengthening
3) Aerobic exercise and endurance training
Tips on how to accommodate poor seating environments when sitting:
4) Stretching
• Place a box under your feet when unable to touch the floor.
5) Balance Training
6) Functional specific training
• Sit on a cushion to help keep your hips slightly higher than your knees when a chair is too low.
Education:
• Use a box or stack of books to elevate items on a desk when the desk is too low.
1) Energy conservation
2) Activity modifications
Upon arrival at the clinic, patients will be placed in the fluidotherapy machine for approximately ten minutes. It is beneficial to begin sessions with this heat modality to assist in heating the tissues of the upper extremities prior to soft tissue massage. When in the fluidotherapy machine, patients are also asked to move their upper extremity actively to help increase range of motion as
• Place a rolled-up towel behind your lower back to help encourage a slight curvature of the spine.
3) Relaxation techniques
• If a chair surface is too hard, use a cushion or small pillow to aid in comfort.
Breathing control/retraining
Body positioning training
well. Once this heat modality is utilized, patients will move through their treatment session under the guidance of their physical or occupational therapist.
Screening of psychosocial factors that could be contributing to increased fatigue
Breaks Are Important: You may have the perfect seated posture but, eventually, you will need to stand and move around. Take advantage of break times that your teacher or professor provides you during their lectures. Make sure you walk around during the break to help reduce muscle tightness that occurs with prolonged sitting. When studying or working on projects, use an alarm to remind yourself to take breaks. Depending on the event, you should try to take a break every 30 minutes when undergoing prolonged sitting postures.
Exercising Is Important: Undergoing a well-balanced strengthening and stretching exercise program can help support your postural muscles. Exercising can help lead to greater tolerance levels for undergoing prolonged sitting postures.
Will my insurance cover Fluidotherapy? Insurance does cover the cost of fluidotherapy as a part of the treatment session and can also be used when a patient is being treated in physical therapy.

I’ve Been Framed!
By Melissa McCance
While you can frame a piece of art simply by picking one up that’s the correct size and shape from any store that carries them, you might not want to go that route every time. Skillful, knowledgeable framing can change an ordinary piece into something special and something special into something amazing. The right combination of frame and matting will enhance the artwork and heighten its beauty and impact. As Aimee Bozinoff, owner of I’ve Been Framed! in Jackson puts it, “We can take a poster to a masterpiece.”
Established in 1998, I’ve Been Framed! was started by Aimee’s mother and stepfather Carol and Chuck Thompson. The business did very well, and Aimee’s mother contacted her daughter in Florida to ask if she would come help. So, Aimee relocated at the end of 2003 and began working at the shop. In 2016, she purchased the business from Carol and Chuck.
Custom framing can seem daunting if you’ve never had it done before, but there’s no reason to be intimidated. Aimee’s team will walk you through the process step by step whether you have some idea of what you want or absolutely no idea whatsoever.
“You have to find out what their style is. If they have an idea when they walk through the door of what they want, that’s great. If you don’t have any idea, we help you, explaining everything along the way, bringing up choices, and so forth. Typically, when you get to the point of what they had in mind, they know immediately. That is the combination that they want. This is our job, what we do. We do all of the work to get you there. You don’t need to know anything about framing.”
Aimee says there is so much creativity among the three framers working at the shop that she knows they can make any customer happy. They can make what customers bring them into one-of-a-kind pieces that will enhance any home or workplace. All materials used for framing are conservation quality, so there’s no concern about the products damaging your artwork and your finished product will last a lifetime. In addition to Aimee, her mother Carol is still doing framing and Bailey Day rounds out the team.
Framing covers a lot more than posters and prints. The staff at I’ve Been Framed! has done everything from a section of the Breslin Center floor to guitars and needlework. If you don’t want to go the full custom framing route, the shop carries many ready-made frames in sizes from 5” by 5” to 40” by 60”. You can purchase the frame there and have the shop cut a mat and mount your piece.
Aimee emphasizes that everyone is welcome and the staff is ready to help with whatever your project might be. When asked what she finds most satisfying about her work, she replied, “When we show a finished piece to a customer and they’re thrilled with it . . . when we hear, ‘It’s perfect!’ We like perfect.”
I’ve Been Framed! is located at 866 N. Wisner St. in Jackson. Store hours are Monday and Friday, 10 to 4; Tuesday and Thursday, 10 to 6; and Saturday, 10 to 2. After-hours appointments are available. You can reach them by calling 517-783-3810 or emailing ivebeenframedjackson@gmail.com and their website is ivebeenframedjackson.com. You can also follow them on Facebook.

3 Dimensional Physical Therapy (3DPT)
By Melissa McCance
Injuries are perhaps the most common reason for needing physical therapy, but post-operative care, a decrease in physical function (often seen with aging), and diseases like arthritis can also bring people in. Physical therapy can help return patients to a better level of health.
3-Dimensional Physical Therapy (3DPT), located in the former roller rink now known as The Well, offers exclusive services and operates with a “give back” philosophy.
Heading up the physical therapy services at Hillsdale’s 3DPT clinic is Leigh Hancock, PT and Director of Clinical Services for Hillsdale County. 3DPT began in Lenawee County in 2009. Soon after it branched out to Brooklyn in Jackson County and is now in Hillsdale County. Services include dealing with athlete-specific care, women’s health, rehab, vestibular therapy, post-surgical treatment, chronic pain issues, injuries, and promotion of aging actively. 3DPT offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and athletic training services in some of their eight clinics, six schools, and their pediatric clinic called “Sprouts” located in Adrian.
Leigh explains that 3DPT is structured on what she calls “two immovables.” The first is love as described in I Corinthians 13. “It’s truly about love—about the people, not about the profit,” she says. The second is AFS (Applied Functional Science) as taught through the Gray Institute. AFS focuses on an integrated approach of mind, body, and spirit as well as movement through all three planes. “All our team members are required to do AFS training because we feel that AFS is the best way we can love on our patients,” says Leigh. 3DPT shows it’s “give back” philosophy through the Giving Board in each clinic. When patients complete their therapy programs, they can choose a local, national, or global charity, and a donation is made by the clinic in honor of the hard work each patient has put into their recovery.
Michigan is now a Direct Access state which means that most people can be seen without a referral for 10 visits or 21 days, whichever comes first. Leigh said that if the patient approves, they do prefer to
keep the PCP (Primary Care Provider/Physician) in the loop. If it’s necessary to continue after that initial period, the patient will need a note from their PCP and the clinic will handle that. They also offer a free screening process that not only assesses if physical therapy is needed but can help patients who are anxious or fearful about what is involved.
Leigh and Diana Schneider (Tecumseh clinic) have been trained through the Gray Institute and the Herman & Wallace Institute to provide specialized women’s health care. This specialized service addresses issues like pelvic pain, uterine and vaginal prolapse, incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, urinary urgency, and pre- and postnatal care. Patient privacy is a priority and one room is reserved specifically for consultation and examination for women’s health.
3DPT currently uses the “Cozean Pelvic Dysfunction Screening Protocol” to help identify people with pelvic floor muscle dysfunction so they can get the care they need to address their symptoms. Research has shown this method to be 91% effective. Leigh’s and Diana’s training allows 3DPT to offer the unique option of internal therapy to treat women who suffer from more severe pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms. 3DPT has truly been experiencing great success with external and internal therapy and hopes to be able to help every woman in Hillsdale, Jackson, and Lenawee counties.
3DPT is owned by Bill and Jessica Chesser and Jonathan Parker, and they as well as the entire 3DPT team are looking to integrate into the community and be here for the people they serve in ways that go beyond just providing physical therapy. The Hillsdale clinic is located at 3240 W. Carleton Ave. Their hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 8 to 6; Tuesday, 7 to 4; and Friday, 7 to 1. Monday through Thursday they close between noon and 1. You can reach them by phone at 517-398-8039

Women have pushed through many barriers in the business world, breaking through the glass ceiling into lines of work and positions that were unheard-of for women just a few decades ago.
WOMEN IN BUSINESS
Since the 1940s, women have been playing an increasingly larger role in the world of business. These days, women have practically equal footing with men when it comes to business, and there are many female company owners and bosses.
The third full week in October has been designated as National Business Women’s Week. It is a celebration not only of what women have accomplished to move forward and make positive changes in the business world but also a focus on where women are going—the obstacles that still need overcoming.
Today, women-owned businesses generate nearly $1.8 trillion in sales. Of privately-owned companies, women own 40 percent of them and employ almost 9 million people. Our contributions to the economy should be recognized and applauded!
You can also honor National Business Women’s Week by learning more about some of the most successful and inspirational women in business in our area and the varied ways in which they participate in our local economy. We’ll give you a few to start off with: meet 32 local businesswomen rockin’ the business world!

Path to career: I went to travel school to be a flight attendant but the minimum age was 21. While working for a photographer, I was approached by my friend Judy Gabriele about a sales position at the Hillsdale Daily News. I worked there in several capacities for over 17 years and then left to try radio sales in Detroit. It was a great experience, but print is my first love! I started a magazine in Metro Detroit, sold out to my business partner, and moved home to start Simply Hers.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? There have been many twists and turns along the way I’m the better for them! I love what I do. I have the opportunity to meet new people every day and help them grow their businesses. I especially love the people I work with—my staff is fantastic and I appreciate each one of them!
Advice for women interested in business: Love what you do. Life is too short . . . don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and take a change. You just might surprise yourself—I did!

Education/training: Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Ohio State University
Path to career: I was interested in exercise and the medical field. Growing up, I took my cousin to his PT appointments and helped with his home exercises. My honors program required me to meet with a graduate school admissions officer; I chose PT.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? I have to motivate my patients which, thankfully, comes naturally. I practice what I preach and I’ve been told I inspire others. Having patients conclude PT and being appreciative and grateful is very motivating. My biggest challenge with patient care is convincing those who have previously had a negative experience to buy into their treatment programs.
Advice for women interested in business: Make it a point to learn from your mistakes; constantly evaluate how you can make things better or how to react more efficiently to a situation.
Grew up: North Adams, MI
Position: Partner at Bailey, Hodshire and Co., PC
Education/training: BA in Accounting, Hillsdale College; CPA license, 1991
Path to career: a bookkeeping class in high school sparked my interest
What motivates and challenges you in your career? All of my amazing clients that are very appreciative when I help them with their accounting needs. The challenge comes from constant changes in the tax laws and audit standards.
Advice for women interested in business: Always work very hard and be proud of everything you do and accomplish.
Grew up: Grosse Pointe Park Position: Co-owner, Chef’s Way Organic Farm, 9 years
Education/training: Bachelor’s degree, Western Michigan University
Path to career: It was a calling. We moved to the farm my husband was born on to rehabilitate decades of growth on the organic grounds. We got it officially certified in 2014. Our mission is to provide quality organic produce on a commercial scale. My husband is a former chef and saw the demand for organic. We wanted our growing family to be together as much as possible.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? Knowing we are providing a toxin-free vegetable is very gratifying. Being my own boss, being a farmer and working from home allows for opportunities to sponsor and give time to community service projects like the Light Up Hillsdale Christmas parade, revitalizing the Dawn Theater, and working with groups like CAPA and CASA. That is where I find my center.
Advice for women interested in business: Expect a learning curve and strive for progress not perfection. If where you are right now is progress from this time last year and the year before that, then you are doing it right.

Christie Plemmons
Grew up: Hillsdale, MI
Position: Broker/Owner, Christie Plemmons Realty, 20 years (11/22)
Education/training: Associate degree in accounting
Path to career: Became interested in real estate from seeing my dad work as a Realtor. My parents emphasized college so I went and worked in accounting for a few months. It wasn’t for me and I jumped to real estate. After three years, I completed more meducation and got my Broker’s license. About seven years later I reached what seemed like an insurmountable goal of $1,000,000 in sales for one year. As of 8/1/22, I’ve closed $10.5 million in sales for this year. Mindblowing what determination and consistency (and the grace of God) can do!
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I truly love my job. I love people, their stories, and learning what brings them here or takes them there. No day is ever the same as Realtor which can be exciting and is never boring! Faith, family, and community are what keep me going. That no two days are ever the same is also a challenge! I’ve had to learn balance which wasn’t easy. Balancing a job I love with my family (whom I love much more) can be a challenge.
Grew up: Fremont, IN, and Hillsdale, MI Position: Broker, Coldwell Banker Groves Real Estate with a focus on
office management and agent support (13 years)
Education/training: BBA from Western Michigan University, CPA license, Real Estate Broker license
Path to career: I was working as an accountant when my husband Tim’s office assistant (Coldwell Banker Groves Real Estate) quit. Tim asked if I would fill in.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? My primary motivation is my agents, offering them support to be successful and assisting/pushing them to excel. I aspire to create an office culture that promotes excellence. One challenge is meeting each agent at their level and in a way that allows optimal functioning while still pushing them to be their best. The greatest challenge is work/life balance. My two kids always have been and always will be my number one priority, and balancing giving all at the office and all to my kids is a daily struggle.
Advice for women interested in business: You’re worth more than you know. If you want to attain it, go for it! But if, along the way, your heart tells you to pause or change your professional career, don’t hesitate. Follow your heart always.
Grew up: Manitou Beach, MI
Position: Owner, Cottage Inn Pizza since 6/2014
Education/training: Jackson Community College and Siena Heights College
Path to career: I was working in the automotive world but decided I wanted my own business. My passion was always cooking and when Cottage Inn became available, the choice seemed obvious. The popularity of birthday parties and events at the restaurant showed that expansion into our own space was necessary. We relocated to the Silos Fun Park in August 2019 with a dining space, arcade, driving range, miniature golf, and more.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? When you’re an integral part of your business, success or failure, that is motivation enough to work hard EVERY DAY. All eyes are always on you—your employees, the other managers, your customers. I believe one should always make the right choice even when no one is looking.
Advice for women interested in business: Never sell yourself short. Not everyone is designed to own a business. It’s hard work and requires a dedication that is self-sacrificing and sometimes thankless. Above all, remember YOU HAVE CHOICES. Some will just be harder than others.
Grew up: Hillsdale, MI
Position: Manager, Cottage Inn Pizza; Manager, Silos Fun Park
Education/training background and path to career: My Cottage Inn training began in 2014 at age 16: kitchen worker, then delivery driver. After earning a degree in business and accounting at Bluffton University, I became a manager at Cottage Inn Pizza.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? Being part of a family business definitely motivates me to be the best example of a hard worker. I enjoy working with teens, teaching them what’s needed to be a self-starter, carrying the needed characteristics forward to their career positions. Managing a weekend shift without other lead employees can be draining. The past two years with the ups and downs of Covid and supply chain issues have been a constant challenge.
Advice for women interested in business: There are definite advantages to having your own business. I would advise other women to reflect on the time commitment a venture like this necessitates. Are you sure you can give up personal time or your day off to cover during rough times?

Grew up: Waldron, MI
Position: Owner, Country Carpets (formerly Larry’s Floor Covering), 10 years; also,
office/sales—15 years
Education/training: accounting degree from International Business College, Fort Wayne, IN
Path to career: This has been my family’s business for 51 years. I’m a third-generation owner.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? Having a family business motivates me always to strive to do better. It means a lot to follow in my grandpa’s and dad’s footsteps and continue with the legacy they built. Also, to give knowledge and support to my family who works with for me as the fourth generation. The biggest challenge comes from making sure I’m involved in all aspects of our growing business. This can be exhausting some days to keep up. But it’s essential in running a good business.
Advice for women interested in business: Stay knowledgeable! You need to stay strong and confident so, when asked tough questions, you have the answers. This will help earn the trust of your customers and reassure them.
Grew up: Hillsdale, MI
Position: Owner, Finish Line Restaurant, since 1995
Education/training: It’s all been “on the job” training. Before I owned the Finish Line, I had various management titles which helped prepare me for my ownership role.
Path to career: I started out as a waitress in high school and worked my way up through the ranks and, in the end, purchased the business.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I have always enjoyed serving the people of Hillsdale County and beyond. It is rewarding to know that people appreciate the hard work that it is in the restaurant industry. I love seeing the smiles from our customers and talking to them on a daily basis.
Advice for women interested in business: To be successful in life you need to chose a job/career that you love. Loving your job makes the work easier.
Grew up: Quincy, MI
Position: Director of Human Resources, Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility, 15 years
Education/training: Bachelor’s degree in business/human resources
Path to career: I’ve always had a passion for long-term care and working with people. I worked as a CNA for six years at HCMCF and loved it, but I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do long-term. Human resources allows me to have the best of both worlds. I meet all kinds of interesting people and build relationships with elders within our community.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? What motivates me is hiring qualified candidates who will contribute to the success of our facility by providing the best care possible for our residents. One challenge is replacing employees who take advantage of our tuition reimbursement program by furthering their education. It’s a good challenge to have because we know we are helping our employees better themselves.
Grew up: Adrian, MI, and Salyersville, KY Position: Owner, Hillsdale Craft Supply, 5 years
Education/training: I’m a self-educated small business owner with knowledge of most arts and crafts. What I don’t already know I learn so others can learn from me.
Path to career: My love for arts and crafts is lifelong. When I could no longer work in my previous field, I opened my dream store—Hillsdale Craft Supply—in June 2017.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? I’m motivated by my love for sharing knowledge about arts and crafts and seeing that lightbulb go off in a customer’s eyes when they realize they can Create Real, Authentic, Family Treasures, too. Which is what CRAFT stands for! I take every aspect of selling and teaching arts and crafts as a challenge. Finding a customer who says, “I can’t do that” challenges me to prove to them that everyone has an artistic, crafty side!
Advice for women interested in business: Find what you love and grow that into a business and career! Never let anyone tell you it’s not worth it or you cannot do that. The sky is the limit when your heart is in what you’re doing!

Grew up: Camden, MI
Position: Co-owner, Hillsdale Family Chiropractic
Education/training: B.S. degree, Hillsdale College, 2001; Doctor of Chiropractic, Palmer College of Chiropractic, 2005
Path to career: I worked as a chiropractic assistant at Hillsdale Chiropractic Clinic in high school. I was interested in pediatrics but seeing the vast age range of patients at the clinic intrigued me. The preventative, proactive aspect to the care I observed motivated me to apply to Palmer. I began working at the clinic in 2006; in 2016, my husband, Bret, Jr., and I purchased the clinic and renamed it Hillsdale Family Chiropractic.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I am excited to be in a career where I can help guide people in their health journey and help them lead more fulfilled lives. I think the biggest challenge is juggling patient care with the business aspect. My heart is in the daily contact with patients—the business things are a necessity.
Advice for women interested in business: Write down and map out your goals and plan of attack to keep yourself accountable, including business and personal goals. If you have a game plan of how to approach life/work balance, the stress of both is easier to handle.
Teresa Keck
Grew up: Hillsdale, MI
Position: Owner, Hillsdale Gymnastics
Education/training: Elementary education degree, Hillsdale College; master’s degree in educational administration. Also hold endorsements/certifications in K-5 physical education and K-8 in English. I’m USA Gymnastics certified to instruct preschool through team level.
Path to career: I taught in Waldron, progressing to administrative roles like athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. I grew up taking dance and tumbling classes. Then I moved to competitive gymnastics with Branch Gymnastics in Coldwater. I opened my gym my sophomore year at Hillsdale College. Later we added dance and competitive cheer to the gym after I coached the cheer and dance team at Hillsdale College.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? I absolutely adore working with children, whether in the gym or at school. But the gym is my happy place. I love celebrating with the competitive girls when they get new skills or when the competitive cheer team hits a routine with zero deductions. It’s crazy that I know most of these kids through the majority of their lives before they go to college.
Advice for women interested in business: Be resilient, fearless, speak up, and don’t let others define you! Never mistake your inexperience for incompetence. You’ll figure it out!
Hannah Sayles
Grew up: Hillsdale, MI
Position: Legal assistant, KB Law Office, 7 years
Education/training: Associate degree in business management, Jackson Community College
Path to career: A friend introduced me to Kimm Burger. I filled in one day answering phones, and, when her assistant gave notice, I applied and got the job.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? Motivations—learning new things, getting my portion of what’s needed for the file completed so it’s off my desk, and accomplishing my daily tasks. Challenging—when calls are not returned then I cannot move forward with the paperwork that needs to be completed. Also . . . uncooperative people.
Advice for women interested in business: Do not be afraid to try something new, something outside the box. If it is something you love, chances are there are other people that will as well, they just haven’t made it their career. There is a lot of room in Hillsdale County for many different businesses to grow, even if your dream is similar to a business that already exists, you can still be successful if you are determined to be successful.
Grew up: Hillsdale County
Position: Sales executive with McGraw Publishing, 3 years
Education/training: I began at JCC, then transferred to Averett University in Danville, VA, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, minoring in business. My favorite business classes were marketing and management. Little did I know I’d be using what I learned in those classes and loving it later in life!
Path to career: It dropped into my lap via my brother who was handling the shipments for our publications. He told me about the position that he thought I’d be perfect for. I looked into it and decided to give it a shot. I quickly discovered it was exactly what I needed!
What motivates and challenges you in your career? Challenges motivate me, as do successes! The satisfaction I feel when I develop trust with my clients and build friendships is very rewarding! The greatest challenge is developing that initial relationship and helping them see the value we can offer them.
Advice for women interested in business: Don’t be afraid of jumping into something new. You never know when you’ll fall into something that is perfect for you! Confidence goes a long way in your professional career and so does kindness.

Amy Dryer
Grew up: Jonesville, MI
Position: Realtor, 20 years; Broker, Playford Real Estate, 10 years
Education/training: Graduate of the Holloway Institute—Realtor (2002), Broker (2013)
Path to career: I graduated from Baker College with a business degree, wanting to own a preschool. Real estate happened to cross my path. I became intrigued with this profession and researched it a bit more. Once I decided to go in that direction, I enrolled in Holloway Institute classes to earn my license as a salesperson.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I am motivated to lead my team to success, continue our commitment to the local community, and assist our clients with one of the biggest decisions they will make. What challenges me is the ever-changing real estate market; every transaction is completely different.
Advice for women interested in business: Be confident, have patience, and find a great mentor!
Grew up: Hillsdale Position: Realtor at Playford Real Estate for almost 2 years
Education/training: Bachelor’s degree in marketing from Baker College
Path to career: I’ve been in the insurance industry for over 20 years and just recently added real estate. I’d found myself dreaming and checking out all of the houses for sale, so I decided that they were complementary and added real estate to the resume.
What motivates and challenges you in your career? I’m motivated because of the successful feeling I get when we finally find someone their happy home or when they sell. Houses come with a lot of memories, good or bad, so buying and selling is an emotional decision. I love guiding people and holding their hands through the big life moments.
Advice for women interested in business: Find what it is that really makes you happy and build your career around your true interests.

Carolyn Scholfield
Grew up: Jonesville, MI
Position: Realtor, Mary Playford Real Estate, over 2 years
Education/training: I attended Jackson College after which I acquired extensive experience in management in the manufacturing industry. During that time, I learned as much as I could, focusing on efficiency, quality, and planning.
Path to career: In November 2019, Mary Playford of Playford Real Estate approached me and encouraged me to obtain a real estate license. After discussion with my family and prayer, I pursued this path and received my license within two months. What motivates & challenges you in your career? My motto is I only do things that I love. I’m mindful of overloading my plate, but sometimes my multiple responsibilities collide. I learned during my 20 years in the automotive industry to prioritize and tackle one thing at a time. I also learned to say, “No, but thank you for considering me.” My time is my most valuable commodity.
Advice for women interested in business: NEVER give up on your dreams. Stay disciplined and keep a daily routine. Allow yourself to take the risk and fail—often my failures were times of significant growth. Success is available to anyone patient enough to work for it.
Sarah Maier Shari Kline
Grew up: Southern Michigan Position: owner, Ramshackle Brewing Company, 6 years
Education/training: Associate degree in Human Services, Baker College
Path to career: My husband was homebrewing and teaching me all things beer. When the demand for his homebrew left us without our own supply, we looked into opening a brewery. I dove into the business side of it and found I loved learning about business and sharing our passion with people. Communication, business management, and marketing were three valuable lessons I’ve learned, and I’m so glad I did.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? What motivates & challenges you in your career? I had to learn about business management and crowdfunding. I loved the challenges, relationships, and excitement starting a new business created. I found my passion in communication and marketing while building Ramshackle. I enjoy our community’s reactions to our brewery and exciting people about supporting small business and local artists. My biggest challenge was learning the ins and outs of equitable crowdfunding and marketing it. It made me ask more questions and keep persevering while getting creative.
Advice for women interested in business: Quiet women rarely make history. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions, never quit learning, always be listening, and NEVER take no for an answer.
Grew up: Grand Haven, MI Position: Owner, Smith’s Floral Boutique, since 1/2022
Education/training: I have a Bachelor of Horticulture Landscape Design degree from Michigan State University.
Path to career: I have been involved with the horticulture industry for over 20 years. Owning our own cut flower farm for five years (City Limits Farm) is what lead us to purchase the flower shop.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I love working with plants, flowers, and people. This was a great way to combine all of that into one career and be my own boss. I am also grateful for the amazing women that have stayed with the flower shop during the transition and move. If it were not for their knowledge and teamwork, I would be lost. Advice for women interested in business: The best advice I have for young women in owning your own business is make sure you’re passionate and love what you’re doing because it is very time-consuming but worth it if you love it.
Grew up: Jonesville Position: Vice President Mortgage Loan Officer, Southern Michigan Bank and Trust, 20 years!
Education/training: Associate degree from JCC along with continuing education through employer.
Path to career: I worked at the Hillsdale Title Company for 14 years and fell in love with real estate there. A mortgage loan officer friend talked me into applying for an open loan officer position where I was hired. Best decision I ever made!
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I love helping customers with their finances and making dreams come true, whether it be buying their first home, refinancing, or building their dream home! The challenges we face today in the mortgage world are in keeping up with the mortgage regulations, and I’m fortunate to have an employer that keeps up with it and helps us stay informed.
Advice for women interested in business: Invest the time to foster your dreams! Be willing to accept change and seek training opportunities to help you reach your goals.

Grew up: Pioneer, OH
Position: Branch Manager, Southern Michigan Bank and Trust – Hillsdale, 5.5 years
Education/training: I attended Lourdes College, Sylvania, OH
Path to career: I worked briefly in 2002 for Sky Bank in their loan department as Closed File Clerk. I had the opportunity to go to Fifth Third Bank and worked there for 15 years in new accounts, loans, as lead teller, and branch operations manager and have been in banking ever since.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? My motivation is helping my customers and staff, that is like family, through kindness and support. It takes an entire team to create a positive work environment and it is felt by the customers at the Hillsdale branch. It is a challenge to develop others’ talents while preparing them for their next steps. Sharing knowledge and experience along the way is so important, also.
Advice for women interested in business: Surround yourself with powerful women that you can watch and learn from and be open to suggestions for your own growth.
Grew up: Remsen, IA
Position: Commercial Lender, Southern Michigan Bank and Trust, 8 years
Education/training: Business major at Hillsdale College
Path to career: I started working part time for Old Kent Bank in 1995 while I was in college. I married a local guy after graduating from Hillsdale College. His job was here so I applied and the bank hired me full time. Banking was not a career I considered but I grew to enjoy the work.
What motivates & challenges you in your career: I am motived by assisting business owners to properly grow/manage their businesses thereby strengthening our communities. My Creator blessed me with a curious mind that enjoys figuring out how things work and exploring new ideas. Being a commercial lender fulfills that desire to learn. I am challenged by finding time for continued education on business trends and my own personal development.
Advice for women interested in business: Set a high standard of elegance and etiquette for yourself. This is shown through your appearance, how you speak, and how you carry yourself. Find a woman that emulates these timeless characteristics and ask her to be your mentor.
Grew up: Reading, MI
Position: Dance instructor, six years; owner, Studio 55, one year
Education/training: I began dancing at age three at Studio 55 School of Dance. I’ve trained in various styles of dance with main focus on ballet, pointe, jazz, and contemporary. Attended Slippery Rock University in PA for dance in 2018. Then I returned home and spent two years teaching dance and learning the ropes of running a dance studio!
Path to career: I always knew I’d pursue dance in some capacity, and I’m so thankful the way is owning my childhood dance studio.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I find motivation in sharing my love of dance and heart for Christ with students of all ages and backgrounds. The challenges are rooted in being more creatively-minded than business-minded. Learning to run a business has been an awesome yet challenging experience!
Advice for women interested in business: Set boundaries between yourself and your business from the start. Make time for the things you enjoy that aren’t related to your business!
Grew up: Hillsdale, MI Position: Owner and nail technician, Ten on the Table, 17 years
Education/training: B.A. from Siena Heights University and state license as a nail technician
Path to career: My mom encouraged me to use my “artsy” side on creating nails with her and I apprenticed under her.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? My clients motivate me every day. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be sitting in my chair for 17 years. Some push and test my ability to replicate ideas they see on social media. I try to give them the service I’d want to have if I walked through the door.
Advice for women interested in business: Patience, time, and customer service. I had to find my niche in the nail industry. I had to beg clients to let me try nail art because it wasn’t popular 17 years ago. In 2022 it’s all everyone wants 90% of the time, ha-ha. Also, to grow my clients I had to work: long hours working six days a week for years, taking the best care of my clients. I’m forever grateful to each and every one of them.

Grew up: Born in Erie, PA, moved to Hillsdale at age 6 Position: Owner of A Transformed Life – Custom Furniture
Painting, 5 years
Education/training: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism with Music Theory and History minor
Path to career: I enjoyed painting furniture for myself and friends. A dear friend asked me to paint her kitchen cabinetry and the rest is history. I just booked my 25th kitchen this summer!
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I love what I do and making my clients happy. I can give customers a fresh, new look without the expense of new furniture or kitchen cabinets. I pride myself in completing kitchen jobs in five to seven days. My biggest challenge has been the space demands. Painting cabinetry in my living room transitioned to a spray studio my husband created in the garage but I still find myself using in-home space for hand-painted pieces!
Advice for women interested in business: Just do it! I always wanted to have an artistic business but was afraid of how to run it or that I wasn’t good enough. God has helped me each step of the way. I never dreamed I would have a thriving painting business, but here I am!

Grew up: Addison, MI
Position: Director, Hillsdale Veteran Affairs, 9 years; Veteran Housing Advocate for
Education/training: Associate degree, training for Veteran Service Officer to write claims and assist veterans in achieving the benefits they may be entitled to
Path to career: When visiting the Veteran Affairs Office for questions, the director encouraged me to apply for the deputy direction position. When the director retired in 2018, I was promoted to director. I began with the Community Action Agency working closely with them on finding housing for home veterans and was hired as a part-time advocate in 2015.
What motivates & challenges you in your career? I’m motivated in both jobs because I love helping people, especially veterans. I’m privileged to assist veterans and their widows apply for their benefits. The challenges are making sure I file all paperwork correctly so benefits are received in a timely manner. For housing, the challenge is finding the right fit between veteran and housing. Advice for women interested in business: Come to work, give your job 100% dedication, communicate well, and be kind and courteous. That will go a long way in gaining the trust of those you work with.
Grew up: Hillsdale Position: Owner/program director/preschool teacher, Wiggles & Giggles Daycare Education/training: I’ve been a daycare provider for 10 years. I ran a home daycare for five years and have had my daycare center for five years.

What motivates & challenges you in your career? Working with children, helping them grow and learn is what motivates me. Knowing that parents can work and not worry about the safety of their children is my number one priority. Providing employment and a learning environment for people interested in doing childcare is also something I can take pride in. The biggest challenge in owning a business is balancing time for our five children who are older now and involved in sports and school activities. I want to spend time with all of them before they’re grown and out of the house. Advice for women interested in business: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and continue to ask questions. Listen to coworkers and have open conversations with fresh ideas.
Grew up: Gladwin, MI, and then Jerome, MI Position: Owner, Bundy Hill Diner

Also, my employees and customers—without each and every one of you, this would not be possible! I have always dreamed of owning a restaurant. I never knew that one day I would own the very same place where I held my first job, but here I am!
Advice for women interested in business: The best advice I can give is to never settle for less and if you set your goals, you will achieve them. Dreams do come true, mine did. It didn’t come easy and it sure wasn’t just handed to me. I had to WORK HARD to be where I am today!

Bright Walls Returns to Downtown Jackson One Last Time
Y Jackson Z
by Olivia Pageau
If there’s any event that makes Jackson stand out, it’s the Bright Walls Mural Festival. For the past four years, Bright Walls has made its way to downtown Jackson each fall, bringing artists from around the world to paint the streets. As each artist makes their way downtown to spend the weekend painting jaw-dropping murals, so do several food truck favorites, live music, and even a dog parade. This lively event is interactive, successfully giving fun to the activity of watching paint dry.
Having an epic mural festival each year is an incredible thing that’s come to Jackson, bringing a vibrant palette of color to the downtown community. The September 8-11, 2022, event will mark the finale of Bright Walls. Jackson is grateful to have its downtown adorned with murals of different colors and styles and is ready to finish the final pieces of the puzzle with a festival that will be bigger and better than seen before.
Here’s what to expect at this year’s Bright Walls Finale: At least 12 new murals
Bright Paws Dog Parade
Mini Murals Painting Competition
Your Generation in concert
Sunday Funday (kids’ activities, puppet show, and live performances)
Food, drinks, and fun for the whole family!
Join the fun in downtown Jackson, starting September 8!

Care for Them Even After You’re Gone By Planning Ahead Now
It can rock our world when someone we love passes away before we’re ready to comprehend what’s happening. We’ve all experienced moments like that. We take for granted how fragile life really is, but a sudden loss brings it home. That is why it can be so beneficial for your loved ones when funeral plans are arranged ahead of time. This gives those closest to you the room to grieve without the stress of planning and preparing. It also allows you the opportunity to create your own unique celebration of life with your family by your side and can help them feel connected to you in life and death. No matter what life throws your way, pre-planning will be a blessing to your dear ones.

Over The EDG E
Have you ever heard the expression, “Nothing’s right when your underwear’s tight?” I hadn’t until recently, and it was actually my old boss—a reverend, believe it or not—who said it. I don’t remember the context of our conversation wherein that statement would have been uttered, but once I heard those words come out of his mouth, I couldn’t stop thinking about them. What does that even mean? Why would anybody say it? What does underwear have to do with much of anything? It’s those words, however, that very nearly put me right over the edge.
I never thought too much about my underwear. I mean you put them on, you take them off, wash them, and that’s about it, right? I have come to discover that that is not entirely true. There is a lot more about underwear that I never considered. They cover your nether regions of course, but what else, I ask? And what does any of that have to do with nothing being right? Well, let me tell you ...
Women have some pretty sensitive areas in our nether regions which I will NOT discuss at this or any other time for that matter. I know men have sensitive areas, too, but I certainly am not going to ask my husband or any man about those areas. That would entail getting a full description of the area, how much trouble they have with that area, could I offer any suggestions for the area, and who knows what else. Don’t want to know, don’t care, don’t have any suggestions so let’s move on, shall we?
When I was younger and skinnier, I bought underwear that was pretty. At times I would buy what was on sale if I knew no one but me was going to
see them. I mean, really, what difference would it make? On occasion I would even go for some of the sexier stuff, but not any more. Nope, it’s all about comfort now. If it’s big and white, I’m all over it, or rather it’s all over me.
The problem is, the older I’ve gotten, the bigger my belly and bottom have gotten and recently my big, white underwear are no longer big or white for that matter. They’ve become small and dingy. I’d like to blame the dryer, but I don’t dry my underwear so what could be the problem? Yep, the belly/butt combination. Who knew I would get so big in my later years? Nobody ever told me that no matter what I ate or didn’t eat, it was going to affect my belly and/or butt and usually both. Dang!!
My point to all this is, the bigger I get, the more that statement rings true. As an example, when I put on some of my underwear the other day, I was miserable before noon. I couldn’t concentrate on the book I was reading, I couldn’t sit down without discomfort, I could barely breathe. Nothing in my world felt right! I was crankier than usual and was at complete odds. I just couldn’t figure out what the problem was until I ended up cutting the elastic around the legs and waist of my underwear and I could finally breathe again and I felt so much better. It was a fresh, new world and I felt good about everything. I’m tellin’ ya, ladies, “nothing’s right when your underwear’s tight” is a true statement of fact. Don’t think about it, don’t question it, just believe it. Those words will never again put me over the edge.

By Diane K Clow Grandma Quilter and Sewist Picker of Vintage Things
Crafty and Creative
If you’re a creative person, you have this inner drive to produce. This can be something crafty, decorative, usable or just to bring joy to yourself and others. Who wouldn’t want a beautiful handmade and homemade gift from you?
Granddaughter Presley and I have crafted bead bracelets, Christmas ornaments, Easter wreaths, and painted barn quilts together. At age 12, she has an eye for color and design and the patience to sit with her grandma and make stuff. Sadly, she has no interest in sewing of any kind. Which means no quilting. I’ve tried to entice (bribe) her with an array of fabrics, patterns, cutting tools and major sewing machinery. But, no go. Three-yearold granddaughter Betty is intrigued with all the pretty fabrics and enjoys pulling folded reproduction vintage fabric out of a basket and handing them to me to recite their colors and then refold. For enthusiastic Miss Betty, all sharp cutting tools and sewing machinery are quite tempting and have to be kept far, far out of reach.
In addition to your local craft and fabric stores, materials for crafting may be found at yard sales and estate sales of other fellow-crafters. This is great if you want to experiment with a new craft at a lesser investment. Those of us who craft find ourselves driven to accumulate every gadget and the materials to last us longer than we’ll ever live
to see completed. I can vouch for this just looking at my own fabric stash. You can find yarn, beads, scrapbooking supplies, and fabric out there by the ton. Sometimes you can find unopened crafting kits that were received as gifts with no intent to complete. These crafters have my complete sympathy. One day they look up at their mass accumulation and think, hmmmmm, didn’t there used to be a window over there? And, where is the dog?
So, explore the world of crafting. Try something new. As we head into the holidays, make those Halloween costumes, bake that bread dough cornucopia for Thanksgiving, string those dried apples into a Christmas garland, and commit to that New Year’s resolution to make stuff! Embrace your inner-creative self and release your crafty beast. (Next summer I’ll look for your thoughtfully-made gifts on the yard sale circuit. Not everyone is as thoughtful as us crafters.)

This summer, the Hillsdale Community Library hosted a local author fair which I was able to attend. The public was afforded an opportunity to meet local authors in person, including Dan Bisher, Liz Burr, Ramona Hammel, Ruth Kyser, Laura Loveberry, Phil Monahan, Penny Neer, and Roger Yoder.
Bisher’s book, Faded Memories, is an examination of Hillsdale County’s Pioneer Period. This is a wonderful history of our area. Author Liz Burr is a highly functioning autistic young woman who has written a fantasy trilogy for young adults entitled New Dimension. Amazingly, she began her writing at age nine and continued the trilogy for the next ten years. Ramona Hammel was representing her author/mother, Donna Jean Stankey, in presenting her stories, Rate and Mischief Maker. They are the true stories of her family who migrated from England to Canada and then to Elsie, Michigan.
Kyser is a well-known author around town, having written 22 Christian inspirational romances. Her latest is Harper’s Hollers. Loveberry is a writer for this magazine and has written two picture books for children. Her latest is entitled Splatter Paint Hero. Monahan is a retired professional wrestler and a three-time national heavyweight champion. His book, Venting Me, is an autobiography on his tenuous battle with Covid. Neer is also well-known around town as a local Olympic champion. She has written Dilly the Braveheart, the True Story of a Blind Dog’s Journey. She describes it as a feel-good book for children and adults alike. The final author I met was Roger Yoder. He is a Detroit Tigers fan from way back and has written Detroit Tigers, a 568 page “magnum opus” about his favorite baseball team. This one would make a good gift for anyone who loves the Tigers!

Book and Author Reviews
Speaking of libraries, I traveled over to Litchfield to check out their new library. They moved this summer to a place affording them three times the space! Welcoming chairs greet you and large, airy windows make it bright and cheerful. There is a research section for residents and a children and young adult section. And, of course, an ample selection of books for the older crowd.
Congratulations to Litchfield!
Fellow reader Linda Kimball hails from Jackson County and informs me she has written her first novel set in Chelsea, Michigan. The story is about a young woman who travels to Kentucky to connect with her biological father and his adult children who have no idea she exists. As she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, time is of the essence. Southern Ties is available on Amazon.com and in bookstores. I am awaiting my copy from her!
My friend, Jeannie, loaned me Rosamund Pilcher’s Winter Solstice. Although I read The Shell Seekers decades ago, I had not picked up another of this author’s famous books and I really enjoyed it. Then, at the library, I came across a recently-published volume of Pilcher’s short stories entitled A Place Like Home. If you’re busy in the outdoors during summer, this might be a good one to pick up since it is made up of short stories. You can get your reading fix in small spurts without investing a long amount of time inside your house reading! They are all romantic and sentimental stories that I enjoyed.
What are you reading? Email me at nancyryan47@gmail.com. See you at the library!

Women in Business
By Kimm Burger
As we know, business is the cornerstone of our society and female-owned businesses are becoming more and more prevalent. According to the 2018 United States Census, there were 1.1 million businesses owned by women, up .6% from 2017. These businesses reported income of about $1.8 trillion dollars with 10 million employees.
In all reports that have been published, the consensus is that women will continue to start more and more businesses in the U.S. A lot of what I see in Hillsdale, Jackson, Branch, and Lenawee Counties are women that are not necessarily opening large firms, businesses, or other major operations, but are instead opening little “mom and pop” stores or at home businesses.
Deciding whether or not to start a business is not something one does lightly, but it is recommended that you talk to others who are already doing what you want to do and get their advice; you would be surprised at how many women business owners would love to help others get started and will usually point you in the right direction.
Once you have decided to open a business, there are a few things that you have to think about, the first being what business structure you want to start. What that means is if you are just going to accept income as an individual or if you are going to start a partnership, limited liability company, or some form of a corporation. Talking to an attorney can help you decide which structure is best for you. If you want to form some type of formal business structure, you will need to file the appropriate documents with the State of Michigan. Again, an attorney can help you with this.
Once you have figured out your business structure, you have to think about a bad word . . . “taxes.” Once you start selling products or services, you will have an income flow which needs to be reported to the IRS. Before you start, contact a certified accountant to go over all of the pros and cons of the business and have them help you set up an accounting program, formally or informally, so you can abide by the rules. Also understand, depending on how you structure your business, you may need to apply for an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS which you will use for filing taxes. Again, the accountant or the attorney can help you obtain those, or you can go directly to the IRS website to obtain one. (If you choose to obtain the EIN number yourself, please make sure you use the IRS website, not a site that may help you do it as those sites require you to pay, whereas the IRS will do it for free.)
Once you have the structure down, the taxes straightened out, go sell and enjoy yourself. You will be amazed at how much you can truly enjoy owning your own business.

Kayaking, Canoeing, and Boating
The weather may be getting too cool for swimming, but kayaking, canoeing, and boating are still great outdoor activity options in the fall. The Platte River—part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore—has calm, strangely warm waters that are easy to navigate by kayak, canoe, or standup paddle board. Travel pristine waters, enjoying the serenity of a peaceful paddle, and take in the spectacular seasonal scenery of thousands of miles of freshwater coastline and 11,000 inland lakes. Find your perfect lake at michigan.org/lakeeffect.
Fall is also a great time to plan weekend getaways to top Michigan destinations like Traverse City, Marquette, Grand Haven and Mackinac Island with all the fun but fewer crowds than the popular summer season.

It’s the time for spooky celebrations, pumpkin carving, cider, and trick-or-treating! Love it or hate it, soon you’ll either have your neighborhood haunted by children, or you’ll be making the night-time trek right along with them. Because Halloween traditions are so fun and family-friendly, we think the WHOLE family should be able to attend, and that means family members on two legs and four legs.
To bring your dog on the door-to-door candy mission, it’s going to take planning, patience, and definitely coordinating costumes. Here are some tips for trick-or-treating with your pup.
1. BRING THE NECESSITIES.
If you’re going to take your dog out for the whole night, bring the usual: water, snacks, and toys, just as you would for a child. Walking all around the neighborhood is a long way for your dog, and he needs to keep his strength up to have a good time. Always be prepared. You never know what mischief dogs can get into on a Halloween night!
2. HAVE AN ESCAPE PLAN.
Pet Talk
Taking Your Dog Along on Halloween
Humans have to remember that pups have a short attention span. We may be able to go to every house on the block, but halfway through the night, your pet could be ready to go home. Have a plan for when your pup may need to stop. It might be setting a checkpoint where you take your dog home.
Dogs can’t have chocolate or sugar, and those two things are everywhere on Halloween night. When diving into their candy, ask kids to throw their leftovers away in a safe place out of reach of your furry friends. Remind kids never to share their candy with pets, even if they beg (not that they would want to share anyway). To make it fun for your pet, you can always bring their treats along to make sure they trick-or-treat responsibly. Some houses may even offer dog-friendly treats for furry trick-or-treaters!
3. BEG FOR THE RIGHT TREATS.

Pork Chop is a very sweet American Staffordshire Terrier. He gets along great with humans but is very selective about what dogs he likes. He is not cat friendly. He loves to play with rope toys and squeaky toys, and enjoys every second of being able to hang out with humans! He’s kid friendly too, but we do recommend kids older than 5 years. He’s a long time shelter resident, but he’ll make someone a great couch snuggling friend for sure!
Oakley is about 5-6 months old. He is good with other dogs and great with people. Stop by today to meet your new best friend!

Lucy & Nellies
5 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1½ tablespoons red wine vinegar
3 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
1 tablespoon each minced fresh thyme, sage, and rosemary
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 large sweet potato (about 16 oz), peeled or unpeeled as you choose, chopped into ¾” cubes
1 lb Brussels sprouts, sliced into halves
2 medium fuji apples, cored and sliced into half moons about ¾” thick
2 shallot bulbs, peeled and sliced about ¼” thick
4 slices hickory smoked bacon, chopped into 1” pieces
2 tablespoons chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)
One Pan Autumn Chicken Dinner
Preheat oven to 450°. Pour 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and the red wine vinegar, garlic and herbs into a one-gallon resealable plastic bag. Add chicken, season with salt and pepper, then seal bag and massage mixture over chicken while working to evenly distribute herbs Set aside and let rest while chopping veggies.
Place sweet potato, Brussels sprouts, apples and shallot on an 18”x 13” rimmed baking sheet Drizzle with remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, toss to evenly coat, season with salt and pepper to taste. Spread into an even layer.
Set chicken thighs over veggie/apple layer. Separate any pieces of bacon that may be stuck together and sprinkle bacon over veggie-apple mixture. Roast in preheated oven until chicken and veggies are golden brown, about 30-35 minutes (chicken should register 165° in center). Broil during last few minutes for a more golden-brown, crispy skin on chicken if desired. Garnish with parsley if desired and serve warm.

1 medium onion, quartered
1 bay leaf
1 (16-ounce) package frozen mixed vegetables
2 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
½ cup butter or margarine
½ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1½ teaspoons salt
1¼ teaspoons pepper
¼ teaspoon dried thyme
2 hard-cooked eggs, sliced
1 (9”) refrigerated piecrust
Chicken Pot Pie
Combine first 7 ingredients in a large Dutch oven; bring to a boil Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 1 hour or until chicken is tender Remove chicken, reserving broth in Dutch oven; discard vegetables and bay leaf Let chicken cool; skin, bone, and cut into bite-size pieces
With a large spoon, skim fat (oily liquid) from surface of reserved broth and bring broth to a boil. Add frozen vegetables and potatoes; return to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 8 minutes or until tender. Remove vegetables from broth, and set aside. Measure 3 cups broth; set aside. Reserve remaining broth for other uses.
Melt butter in Dutch oven over low heat; add flour, stirring until smooth. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. 3 medium-sized acorn squash
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and pepper
For the filling:
2 tablespoons olive oil
8 sage leaves, chopped
1 lb ground Italian sausage
8 oz baby bella mushrooms, sliced
½ red onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped, plus more for garnish
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper, plus more for garnish
1½ cups cooked rice
⅓ cup heavy cream
1 cup grated Fontina or Monterrey Jack cheese
Stuffed Acorn Squash
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Carefully cut the squash in half through the stem Scoop out the seeds and fibrous center. Place on a baking sheet cut-side up. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes. Flip each half over, placing them cut side down, and continue to roast for 15 minutes or until very tender. Remove from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 350°F.
For the filling:
While the squash is roasting, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until very hot Add the sage and cook for 30 seconds or until dark green. Add the sausage to the skillet. Cook until fully browned, breaking up the sausage with the back of a spoon as it cooks, about 10 minutes Transfer the sausage-sage mixture to a bowl.
Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Add the mushrooms, onion, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper Cook, stirring frequently, until the mushrooms release their liquid and the onions are softened about 7 minutes. Stir in the cooked rice and heavy cream Stir in 1/2 cup fontina cheese until well combined. Stir the sausage back into the mixture Let simmer for a couple of minutes then remove from the heat.
Flip the squash cut side up and divide the filling among each squash half. Sprinkle with the remaining ½ cup fontina Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and everything is warm throughout. Garnish with more fresh time leaves and black pepper before serving.

March 21 — World Down Syndrome Day 2022

AMAZON SMILE
Now, think of one of them, in their own home, being intimidated, threatened, controlled, and/or physically harmed. Is it hard to believe that someone close to you could be hurting without you knowing about it? Domestic violence affects more than 10 million people per year. One in three women and one in four men have been physically abused by an intimate partner. (www.nctsn.org, 2022) What can we do to help and change this?
We are a registered charity with Amazon Smile. Select us as your charity of choice and a percentage of sales will be donated back to us.
Family, community, church, clubs, teams, temple, synagogue, workplace, mosque, gym, pub, online community…we all love to belong and feel included. And after the last couple of years, it means more than ever.
women fighting for survivors. When asked if a magic wand could give them any ONE thing, it took them only seconds to say, “More space to help the people that they already have in their programs like expanding group rooms, staff rooms, storage for donations, etc.” “A Catherine Cobb Resale Shop would help in so many ways.” “Having a space in the local college campuses to be present as a sexual assault safe space.” While these things may seem too big for you to be able to help with, there are several small ways to make a big impact.
That’s also why March 21st is World Down Syndrome day for the triplication of chromosome 21. The day is meant to teach people what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in their communities.
QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS
Society needs to change. People need to understand that it is not ok to hurt someone they love. There is never an excuse that would make it tolerable. The justice system needs to hold offenders criminally accountable. We need to break the stigma and talk. These are the thoughts of a group of women who care and want to make change. These are the women who work at the Catherine Cobb Safe House in Adrian, Michigan.
Talk with your financial advisor or accountant about Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA, gifting appreciated assets, and donation of real property.
Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It is typically associated with physical growth delays, mild to moderate intellectual disability, and characteristic facial features.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Let’s “Paint Lenawee Purple” as stated in the yard signs that Catherine Cobb will be selling. Throughout the month of October, wear purple for all victims and survivors of Domestic Violence. Here are ways you can get involved and help:

Catherine Cobb Safe House, located at 220 N Main St., Adrian, offers a compassionate and supportive atmosphere for growth and change for survivors. They are the only Domestic and Sexual Violence shelter in Lenawee County and provide the safety net and services clients need to start healing and building resiliency. (Catherine Cobb Safe House, 2022) Currently CCSH has 38 resident beds, but that isn’t the only way they can help. They offer counseling, legal and personal advocacy, provide for basic needs, and offer support, education and housing for ALL survivors. These services are available for everyone regardless of gender. While CCSH residency is for women and children, they can help find safe shelter for all survivors of domestic violence.
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), March 21, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The initiative is part of the ‘’Lots of Socks’’ campaign begun by the organization to encourage people to start a conversation about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion and acceptance.
Down Syndrome International asks you to participate in the “Lots of Socks’’ campaign, by wearing mismatched, unusual or fun socks. Socks were chosen because chromosomes kind of look like socks. Those born with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome.
