Weber State Football Coaching & Support Staff Head Coach Jay Hill Jay Hill enters his third season as head coach of the Wildcat football program. Hill was named the 11th head coach in Weber State football history in December 2013. After two seasons, Hill has an 8-15 overall record at Weber State and is 7-9 in Big Sky Conference games. He has coached 21 players to Big Sky AllConference honors. In 2015, Hill guided the Wildcats to a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 record in Big Sky play. It was Weber State’s first winning season in five years and included several key victories. The Wildcats picked up a 24-21 overtime in at Montana, their first win in Missoula since 1987. Weber State also finished the year 4-1 at home with wins over Sacramento State, North Dakota, UC Davis and Idaho
2
State. WSU had 10 players earn Big Sky All-Conference honors. Weber State also led the Big Sky in total defense under Hill’s leadership. In 2014, his first season as a head coach, Hill led the Wildcats to a 2-10 overall record and a 2-6 mark in Big Sky play. Under his direction, Weber State saw dramatic improvements statistically and finished the season in the top third in the Big Sky in several categories. He also coached 11 Wildcats that earned Big Sky All-Conference honors. Hill, 40, a longtime assistant coach at the University of Utah, came to WSU with a reputation as one of the top recruiters in the West and has spent time working for three different head coaches at Utah. He spent 13 years (2001-13) at Utah, including the last nine seasons as a full-time assistant coach under Kyle Whittingham. Prior to that, he spent four years as a graduate assistant and administrative assistant with the Utes under legendary coaches Ron McBride and Urban Meyer. The Lehi, Utah native played college football at
Weber State Football
Ricks Junior College, where he earned junior college All-American honors at cornerback. He went on to play two seasons (1998-99) at Utah under Ron McBride. As a senior he led the Mountain West in interceptions, was named Utah’s Defensive MVP and earned second team All-Conference honors. He later played briefly in the XFL and signed free agent contracts with the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants. After his playing career he spent three seasons as a graduate assistant coach and one year as an administrative assistant, working for McBride and Meyer. In 2005, he became a full-time assistant coach under Whittingham. All nine seasons he spent at Utah he worked as the special teams coordinator. He also coached on offense and defense, coaching the cornerbacks (2005-06; 2010-11), running backs (2012) and tight ends (2007-09; 2013). Utah’s special teams excelled under Hill. In 2006 the Utes led the nation in net punting. They led the Mountain West in kickoff coverage four straight seasons and led the Pac-12 in the category in 2011, Utah’s first year in the conference. In 2012 Utah was sixth in the nation in kick return average and this past season the Utes again led the Pac-12 in net punting and finished 10th in the
nation. In 2008 Hill was a finalist for the FootballScoop Special Teams Coordinator of the Year. In his career at Utah, Hill served as the position coach for five All-Americans: defensive back Eric Weddle in 2006, punter Louie Sakoda in 2007, Sakoda as a place kicker in 2008, punt returner Shaky Smithson in 2010 and kick returner Reggie Dunn in 2012. Weddle was drafted in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers and is a Pro Bowl safety. Sakoda, the only unanimous consensus All-American in Utah football history, was a Lou Groza and Ray Guy finalist in 2008. Smithson led the nation in punt returns yards and average in 2010. Hill also mentored NFL draft picks Sean Smith, Brice McCain, R.J. Stanford and Brandon Burton. During his tenure with the Utes, Hill became acclaimed as a top recruiter. Rivals.com named him to its “Class of 2009 Top 25 Recruiters” and named him one of the Top 10 Recruiters in the Pac-12 in 2012. Hill earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish in 2000 from Utah and earned his master’s degree in ESS/Sports Psychology in 2005. He and his wife Sara have four children: Ashtyn, Alayna, Allie and Jacob.

Big Sky play. This year two new coordinators will take over on offense and defense for the Wildcats. Jason Kaufusi is the new defensive coordinator and Fesi Sitake is the new offensive coordinator. Associate head coach Brent Myers returns for his third season at Weber State. Also returning are assistant coaches Kite Afeaki (defensive ends), Terrell Cloud (cornerbacks), Quinton Ganther (running backs), Lance Hunsaker (linebackers) and Colton Swan (special teams, tight ends). New assistant coaches this year are Kelly Bills (wide receivers) and Preston Hadley (secondary). TEAM CAPTAINS Coach Hill has named six captains for the Wildcats for this season, three on offense and three on defense. The three offensive captains are senior quarterback Jadrian Clark, senior wide receiver Cameron Livingston and senior offensive lineman Calvin Steyn. The defensive captains are senior safety Josh Burton, senior linebacker Tre’von Johnson and junior linebacker Emmett Tela. The six players have combined to play in 190 games in their careers at Weber State. LOOKING AHEAD After Saturday’s game, the Wildcats will conclude the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 19, when they take on Big Sky rival Idaho State in Pocatello. Kickoff with the Bengals will be at 2:30 p.m. ABOUT #16 CAL POLY Cal Poly enters Saturday’s game at 6-3 overall and is 4-2 in Big Sky play. The Mustangs are ranked 16th in the nation in this week’s STATS FCS poll. Cal Poly saw its three-game winning streak snapped with a 42-21 loss to No. 3 Eastern Washington Saturday. Prior to that, the Mustangs had won six of their last seven games. Cal Poly started the season with a threepoint overtime loss at Nevada then beat San Diego before back-to-back wins over top 10-ranked teams. They won 38-31 at No. 9 South Dakota State and then beat No. 6 Montana 42-41 at home. The Mustangs are second in the nation in

rushing offense, averaging 370.4 rushing yards per game. Cal Poly is 115th in the nation in passing offense, allowing 133 passing yards per game. The Mustangs are fourth in the country in passing yards per completion at 133.6. They lead the nation in pass efficiency and are fifth in time of possession and sixth in total offense. They are also second in the conference in sacks allowed with six and rank third in rushing defense. Individually, junior Joe Protheroe leads the conference in rushing at 129.6 yards per game, which is fourth in the nation. Senior Kori Garcia is seventh at 76.6 yards per game, and ranks sixth in the nation in yards per carry at 7.0. Senior quarterback Dano Graves is second in the conference in pass efficiency. Cal Poly finished 4-7 overall and was 3-5 in Big Sky play last season, tied for eighth in the league standings. The Mustangs were picked to finish ninth in the Big Sky preseason polls. HEAD COACH TIM WALSH The Mustangs are coached by Tim Walsh who is in his eighth season as head coach at Cal Poly. Walsh is a longtime Big Sky coach and is in his 26th season as a head coach in the conference. He enters Saturday’s game with a career record of 49-40 at Cal Poly and is 24-14 in Big Sky games. Walsh spent 11 seasons as head coach at Portland State from 1996-2006. He has a career overall record of 166-122. He has 91 Big Sky victories, fourth most all-time. SERIES HISTORY This will be the 12th all-time meeting between the two teams with Cal Poly holding a 6-5 all-time series edge. The Mustangs have won the last three games, with Weber State’s last win coming in 2009. In games in Ogden, the series is tied 3-3 but Cal Poly has won the last two since joining the Big Sky in 2012. The two teams did not play last year but Cal Poly beat the Wildcats in 2012 and 2014 in Ogden and in 2013 in San Luis Obispo.

Proud Fan of the Weber State Wildcats!
Weber State Athletic Department Administration JERRY BOVEE
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Jerry Bovee was named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Weber State University in September 2009. Since joining the Wildcats Bovee has been influential in several facility upgrades at Weber State, highlighted by the construction of the Marquardt Fieldhouse indoor practice facility. In addition, a new synthetic turf field and new track have been installed at Stewart Stadium, a new state-of-the-art Daktronics video board was installed at the Dee Events Center, and WSU has also refurnished the Edmond Tennis Courts on campus. He has also been involved in the hiring of new employees within the athletic department including a new Senior Woman’s Administrator, a new Marketing Director, as well as new volleyball, women’s basketball, and softball head coaches. He has also partnered with KP Sports for WSU’s corporate sponsorship opportunities. Prior to being named Athletics Director, Bovee spent two years as Assistant Vice President for Administrative Support Services at Weber State. In that role he supervised operations for the Academic Services and Athletics Compliance for the Athletics Department, and directed Campus Police, Mail Services, Printing Services, Environmental Health and Safety and the Dee Events Center and Stewart Stadium operations.
Bovee assisted in the completion of the year-long NCAA re-certification process for the Wildcats serving as chief report writer and liaison to the NCAA Peer Review Team. In addition, he has supervised the initiative to improve the Academic Performance Ratings for Weber State’s 16 athletic teams. Before coming to Weber State, Bovee served as Assistant Director of the Utah High School Activities Association. His duties included organization and management of state tournaments, coaches and officials education programs, sport rules interpretation and a myriad of other duties related to the administration and governance of sports and activities at the high school level throughout Utah. While at the UHSAA, Jerry served as vice-chair of the National Federation of State High School Associations football rules committee. Bovee worked as Sales and Promotion Specialist and later as Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions at Utah State from 1992 to 1995. In that role, he directed the corporate sales program for Aggie Athletics. In addition, he developed group and corporate ticketing plans, in-game promotions and other game management programs. Bovee earned a bachelor’s degree in Business-Finance from Utah State University in 1992. In 2010 he earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Weber State. He was born and raised in Ogden Utah and attended Ben Lomond High School. Bovee and his wife Julie have four children: Jared, Ethan, Addison and Seth.

Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Stadium
Located on a hillside above the city of Ogden, and with the waters of the Great Salt Lake shimmering in the distance, there are few stadiums anywhere which can match the natural surroundings as well as Weber State’s Stewart Stadium. In the summer of 2011, a new artificial turf field and a new track were installed in the stadium, giving the Wildcat Football and Track and Field programs state-of-the-art playing surfaces. The project was funded from a generous donation from the late-Robert Marquardt and Annette Marquardt-Kimball. A second phase of the project is planned that will renovate the north end of the stadium into “Marquardt Plaza” that will provide a main entrance into the stadium with new restroom and concession areas. The area itself has been used for games, long before the present school site was even in existence. During the mid 1950’s, while the majority of campus of what was then Weber Junior College, was located downtown, the foothills section which today is the site of the university, was purchased with an eye to the eventual move. The football stadium was one of the first structures built. The earliest games played there had minimal seating, located on the nature hillside on the east side of the field.
This was later made into permanent concrete bleachers and went through three subsequent expansions. In 1966, the west stands were added and the area became a stadium, not just a playing field. The seating in the Stadium was raised to just over 17,000, a modern three story press box was added, and in the space underneath the west side seats, were placed dressing rooms, training room and athletics department offices. Thanks to a generous donation from the Stewart Education Foundation, Weber State opened the 38,000 square foot Sky Suites & Press Box Facility at the start of the 2001 football season. This facility put the Wildcats’ home on par with the best Division I facilities in the country. The six-story complex includes 26 sky suites, press facilities, a conference level and a Wildcat AllAmerican room. Views from the facility are breathtaking with the Wasatch Mountains to the East and the city of Ogden and the Great Salt Lake to the West. The Stadium itself is located approximately 4,300 feet above sea level. The playing surface is artificial turf, surrounded by a 400 meter track.

The Big Sky Conference The Big Sky Conference enters its 54th year and 29th year of women’s competition during the 2015-16 academic year. The venerable and stable Division I Big Sky Conference observed its 50th birthday on July 1, 2013. Four of the current league members – Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State and Weber State – have been with the league since its birth. Fellow charter member the University of Idaho returned most of its sports to the Big Sky on July 1, 2014. Northern Arizona University enters its 47th season in the league, giving the league five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership. The Big Sky Conference welcomed North Dakota and Southern Utah on July 1, 2012 as full members. UC Davis and Cal Poly joined as football affiliate members. Eastern Washington University, the University of Northern Colorado, Portland State University and Sacramento State round out the current membership. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. The Big Sky is one of three conferences in the western United States playing Division I football. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. The Big Sky’s full members represent nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. It is “The Heart of the American West.”

The University of Idaho, which was a member from 1963-96, will once again compete in the Big Sky in the majority of its sports. Idaho’s football program maintained its FBS affiliation, joining the Sun Belt Conference. On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963. The Big Sky sponsors championships in 16 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. The Big Sky sponsored softball for the first time in 2013. Men’s golf returned as a championship sport in 2014-15 for the first time since 2002. The University of Hartford and Binghamton University have joined the Big Sky as affiliate members in golf. In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began sponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women. Andrea Williams, the sixth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in her first year at the helm. Williams took over the Big Sky on July 1, 2016, replacing longtime commissioner Doug Fullerton. Fullerton served the league for 21 years. Ron Stephenson, who assed away in 2011, preceded Fullerton. Serving as commissioner from 1981 through June 1995. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.
