On the occasion of International Colon Cancer Day, HC Marbella are talking about this totally preventable disease, thanks to early screening checks, but it is still the second most common cause of death from cancer in Spain.

Colon cancer is a very common cancer. According to the SEOM (Spanish Society of Medical Oncology) it is estimated that in 2023 it will be the most diagnosed type of cancer in our country, with more than 42,000 new cases.

All of the above make it important to diagnose the disease as quickly as possible, even before it develops. According to a recent article published by the SEOM, it is estimated that screening programmes could prevent a third of colorectal cancer deaths, saving more than 3,600 lives a year in our country.

Most colon cancers can be prevented before they appear due to the fact that they usually originate as small polyps. Polyps are small lesions in the colon which sometimes contain cells with precancerous changes, these are known as adenomatous polyps. Over the years, these polyps degenerate leading to the disease. When they are small they do not usually produce symptoms and the only way to detect them in time is through colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy is a technique using a flexible tube, introduced into the anus, which enables visualisation of the inside of the colon and detects the presence of this type of lesion. In most cases these polyps can be removed during colonoscopy, preventing them from degenerating and eventually causing colon cancer.

When is colonoscopy required?

As a general rule, colon cancer screening with a specialist is recommended from the age of 45, except for those who have any symptoms or risk factors, such as a family history of colon cancer or polyps, in whom screening is recommended from the age of 40.

Depending on each patient’s circumstances, the specialist may provide more information or recommend colonoscopy.

The authors analysed data from the National UFO Reporting Centre (NUFORC) and the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), the two most comprehensive UFO reporting sites in the United States, from 2018 to 2020 and compared the number of UFO reports, before and after the start of the pandemic. To test whether social factors might have inﬂuenced the number of reports, they used publicly available data for social mobility from Google Community Mobility Reports, and SARS-CoV-2 cases and deaths, which are surrogate measures of stress and anxiety.

Their analysis showed that UFO reports increased in 2020 from the previous year by about 600 reports in each database. However, no relationship was observed between the number of reports (aggregated across the US or by state) with measures of mobility and pandemic health, which does not support the idea that social factors caused increased reporting.

The researchers then looked for alternative causes and identiﬁed the start of regular Starlink satellite launches beginning in late 2019 as a complicating factor. These launches include up to 60 small satellites at a time, which are highly distinctive and often easily visible.

As a result, many people understandably reported them as UFOs. The analysis demonstrated a relationship between a release and subsequent reports. After eliminating these reports, they retested the association with pandemic-health and social factors, but again found no relationship. Critically, with the Starlink reporting removed, there was no statistical increase in reporting in 2020, and even a decrease in reporting to NUFORC.

The astronomical community is concerned about the impact of Starlink , and other similar projects, which launch large numbers of satellites into relatively low orbits and may degrade astronomical measurements. The authors have shown that the UFO community has a similar problem.
