BoletĂn del fondo de becas Guadalupe Musalem
Information In response to the Scholarship Fund Convocation that opened April 1st and closed May 29th of 2009, we received 36 applications from young indigenous women that wish to continue their high school studies from different regions of the state. The applications were carefully studied by the Scholarship Board, which pre-selected 26 of the young women to be interviewed in person. The decision was difficult in that a large majority of the applicants met the requirements; nevertheless they were able finally select eight applicants to receive the scholarship beginning this July through precise criteria. In our next bulletin we will be presenting the new scholarship students.

Knowing their backgrounds
“Being a scholarship student also meant being a strong woman...”
Jesica Mendoza Díaz
She was born on January 10, 1991 in Santa Maria Quegolani, Yautepec, Oaxaca, and has been a scholarship student since June of 2006. This is her sixth semester in her community’s high school. Jesica has done activities with the support of her classmates and advisors, including giving talks with themes, such as maternity without risks, women’s rights, and gender equality. She has organized workshops with adolescents from the middle school and high school in her community with the topic “sexual and reproductive rights” in her native language Zapotec.
“Being a scholarship student is one of the most beautiful things that has happened to me during my life. Through being a scholarship student, I have learned many things. It has made me grow as a person, allowed me to widen my knowledge about themes I didn’t know, made me value myself, and taught me to confront whatever problems come my way.” “Being a scholarship student also meant being a strong woman, a woman who knows what she wants, a woman that helps her people, someone that will not allow injustices to be committed. All of this I have learned in the workshops that were given in the Casa de la Mujer. The workshops are the best aspect of the Scholarship Fund.” 2
In the future, she wishes to help her people, and is convinced that if she continues studying she can do that. After finishing her studies, she will have the capacity to help her community and the Casa de la Mujer.
Johana
Agustín Mendoza She was born on September 18th, 1991 in Santa Maria Quegolani, Yautepec, Oaxaca, and has been a scholarship student since June of 2007. This will be her sixth high school semester in her community. She has done numerous activities in her community, such as presenting with her classmates the video “Paso a Paso…Cuida el Embarazo,” organized workshops about women’s rights and with other adolescents has worked in exploring the theme of sexual and reproductive rights. “For me being a scholarship student of the Scholarship Fund, “Guadalupe Musalem” has been a great privilege. It has given me the
support and this was, is, and will be very important for me because everyone supports me so much. Being a scholarship student is the greatest! I want to share with you all the following: I believe in myself because my family and many people believe in me. Perhaps, I don’t know where I will arrive in life, but I do know that I will walk my path living in the present with all that I have, with all that I am. I know that there will be obstacles and difficulties that will discourage me, but they will never be able to stop me. To stop myself? No, I do not want to stop myself. I want to continue and be sure that I will arrive to what I “For me it was very important to have built today because if I do not be a part of the Scholarship Fund. build today, if I do not live today, Not only do they give me economic what will happen tomorrow? That is support, but they give me moral why I will begin today, being only what I am, a seed that will grow little by little; and I know that this seed will grow to be a great tree, a tree that will give fruits or maybe a tree without fruits, but with roots well put in the ground, that at least will occupy a spot in the earth and will give life to many people, animals, and plants through oxygen. opportunity to do things that I never thought I could do, such as meeting other scholarship students from other communities. I remember all the times we stayed up telling each other things, talking about our pueblos, meeting each other every month, and feeling each time more closer to each other. This was very important to me, as well as having a tutor and meeting other women and people that collaborate with the Scholarship Fund and GESMujer. Being a scholarship student has opened the doors to knowing myself and other people and things, and being simply what I am – an eagle woman.”
“...Being a scholarship student has opened the doors to knowing myself..” 3
Will I breathe? Of course, of course I will breathe. Will I live? Of course, I will do it. Because life is the most beautiful and greatest thing that could have existed in this world. I will live, I will live the present, being only what I am, being only me, being only a seed that can maybe change the World tomorrow, being a woman with an enormous heart, being only me. Being Johana.” In the future, she wishes to continue studying visual arts or communication sciences and later to be able to serve her community.
The Scholarship students say... “Being in the Scholarship Fund for me is a privilege. It has already made me grow as a person, it has opened doors, and without a doubt, it offers us great economic support. Aside from this support, the most important aspect are the workshops that are offered to us – that makes us grow as people and not simply giving us information without sharing it to our community and the largest number of people possible. “ Maribel Miguel Cruz Santa María Quegolani, Yautepec, Oaxaca. Scholarship Student Since June of 2007

The tutors say...
“Being a tutor is a link between the Scholarship Fund and the scholarship student girls, with the intention of accompanying each one in a personal manner in the process of growth and formation that the Casa de Mujer offers. Much more than a statistic, each relationship between a tutor and the scholarship student is very unique and special in that they establish a dialogue, an exchange of dreams and challenges. I appreciate the Casa de la Mujer and Silvia Citlalli for this first year in tutorial experience because I find myself very fond of and motivated by this project.” Herminda Fernández

Adriana
Márquez Altamirano She was born on December 21, 1990 in Guadalupe La Pe, Ejutla de Crespo, Oaxaca, and is the youngest of five siblings. Between 2006 and 2008, she was a scholarship student. Adriana is 18 years old now and is in her second semester of studying Education Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma de Benito Juárez in Oaxaca with a cumulative grade point of 9.8 out of 10. I love and regard my pueblo highly. Because it is a rural community the interaction and socialization between the people is frequent and there exists little contamination and crime. Since I was little, I lived there happily; I like the country side, the people that live there are very friendly, I have many friends, and the people regard me highly. However, there exists certain disadvantages; there is no high school, internet, libraries, and very little transportation. When I studied at the high school, I had to leave for another community in where there was a tele high school now IEBO. I walked everyday with my classmates and when we needed some information, we had to go to Ejutla. In all it was difficult, but these conditions have served me to value what I do each day and give me a stronger desire to do well and continue studying. If we want to continue studying we shouldn’t make a waste of our big effort and the support of our parents.
gave them my application, attended the interview, and, thanks to God, was selected to be a scholarship student for the last two years that I studied at IEBO. During this time the Casa de la Mujer not only offered me economic support, which I use for school spendings, but it helped me to grow and develop as a person through the monthly workshops that are given. I say ´given’ because even though I have graduated from high school, I still have the opportunity to attend the workshops in order to continue preparing myself.
receiving my university degree, being able to teach professionally, and in the future attending a postgraduate school. These are my biggest dreams, and I know that if God gives me health and strength, I am going to be able to obtain them in order to be able to support my family and my society that greatly needs education professionals to confront the education crisis we now find ourselves in.”
As a scholarship student, Adriana gave talks to adolescents in her community on the topic of sexual My family is the fundamental base and reproductive rights, to women of my life: my mom and dad, these from the program Oportunidades on special beings, whom since I was cervical cancer in the community’s little have given their care and gave health center, and to people in me the best education that they could, her community about indigenous with whose care and love made me women’s rights. In addition she motivated to continue forward, and helped women to read and write. my siblings, who have trusted deeply in me because they know that I am a responsible person and that I am going to take advantage of the great opportunity that they unfortunately did not have. My family is and will always be the reason for the thirst I have for growing and preparing myself for the day to help better this society that today is traversed with serious problems.
Thanks to the strength that my family and El Grupo de estudios sobre la mujer ´´Rosario Castellanos´´ has given me, I am now here in the city of Oaxaca studying Education Sciences in the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez and living in “Mi Casa,” a space where la Casa de la Mujer is most open to use and where we are given the opportunity live during our time studying at the University. In the second semester, with the It is this and the moral support from help of the director from school, a my family that has given me the convocation of the Scholarship Fund power to continue fighting for my “Guadalupe Musalem” arrived. I dreams: finishing my studies and 7
