Le Réseau des Sites Majeurs de Vauban Le Réseau des Sites Majeurs de Vauban fédère les douze sites inscrits sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial. Cette association, destinée à coordonner les actions en faveur de la conservation, de la gestion et de la mise en valeur de ce patrimoine architectural, urbain et paysager exceptionnel a aussi pour vocation d’initier et de développer des programmes d’échanges et de recherche de niveau international.
The Network of Vauban’s Major Sites. The Network of Vauban’s Major Sites was created to unite the twelve sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. Its mission is to coordinate initiatives for the conservation, management and promotion of this architectural, urban and landscape heritage. It further aims to establish and develop international-level exchange and research programs.

World Heritage. “Parts of the cultural or natural heritage are of outstanding interest and therefore need to be preserved as part of the world heritage of mankind as a whole.” (extract from the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, 1972.) The World Heritage Committee has as its mission to protect and present those sites that UNESCO has recognized as being of outstanding universal value.

Vauban s’adapte avec génie au terrain
L’invention de Vauban à Besançon : la tour bastionnée
Besançon possède une position stratégique exceptionnelle, déjà remarquée par Jules César: une rivière, le Doubs, enserre la cité dans une boucle fermée par une colline. Vauban trouve ainsi une ville fortifiée depuis l’Antiquité. Il perfectionne certains édifices et en conçoit de nouveaux, remodelant ainsi entièrement Besançon.
Vauban optimise la défense du cœur de Besançon en inventant un nouveau modèle de tour à canons : la tour bastionnée. Il en construit six, bien ancrées dans la rivière et faisant face aux collines qui dominent la ville. Besançon, avec sa citadelle et ses deux enceintes (dont environ dix kilomètres de remparts), illustre la façon dont Vauban savait optimiser un système de défense en s’adaptant avec subtilité au relief naturel.
Il construit la citadelle, entourée d’énormes murailles, sur la colline. Il conçoit l’enceinte de Battant, avec bastions, courtines et demi-lunes dominés par le fort Griffon, seconde citadelle faisant face à la première.
Vauban’s invention for Besançon : the bastion tower. Vauban optimised the defensive system at the heart of Besançon by inventing a new form of fortified cannon towers known as bastion towers. He built six of these, set into the river and facing the overlooking hills.
A meandering defense. Besançon has an exceptionally strategic location, that Julius Caesar himself noted : the river Doubs encircles the city within a meander protected by a hill. Vauban here found a site that had been fortified since the time ot the Roman Empire. He improved its existing buildings and constructed new ones, completely reconfiguring Besançon. On the hill, he erected the citadel and its huge surrounding walls. Around the Battant quarter, he designed a fortification network that includes bastions, protective curtain walls and triangular demilunes. Towering above it is Fort Griffon, a second citadel directly facing the first.
With its citadel and two fortified walls (comprising nearly ten kilometers of ramparts), Besançon illustrates Vauban’s ability to optimize a system of defense by subtly adapting it to its natural setting.
