A colossal act of love. There’s really no other way to describe the effort and resolve that helped make this dream a reality. Nearly 15 years in the making. Fifteen years of planning, dreaming and imagining. While standing on the shoulders of the generations who pioneered health care in our region, our community came together – building on the legacy of Memorial Children’s Hospital – to inspire a new vision for our future. That vision is Beacon Children’s Hospital. We know our customers not only want the best care for their children, but they also expect a system of care with easy access and convenience, which is exactly what you will receive when you visit our new Children’s Hospital. As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, Beacon physicians consult with Mayo Clinic specialists on tough cases while keeping your family close to home. Should your child need services outside of our system, our clinical teams are connected with experienced physicians across the country and can guide you to the care your child needs. Our history, with our talented physicians and clinical teams who provide comprehensive and compassionate pediatric care, and the generosity of thousands of people throughout the region, have made all this possible. Beacon Children’s Hospital belongs to our community. We are proud to be on this journey with you. Sincerely,
Phil Newbold Chief Executive Officer
KIDS! Lots and Lots of KIDS! And with kids comes a lot of joy and some struggles. As a parent of three children, who are now young adults, I have gotten to experience the joys of having and parenting kids. Some of the best moments in life – memories that you will carry with you an entire lifetime – are because of your children. There is no price you can put on those moments. But there are also times of struggle. Why won’t they pick up their room? Why won’t they eat their vegetables? Sometimes looking back, some of those struggles seem insignificant, when you think about the big questions. Is my child healthy? What does this diagnosis mean? Will my child live? Those are significant questions that some parents think about a lot and have to face. Some parents may never have to face those questions. But none of us as parents know that – until it happens. For some parents, and kids, health is a major concern. In those times, two of the most important things you need for your child are options and answers. When you visit our Children’s Hospital, your child has access to the extensive resources of our entire system of care. I have said many times that we are very fortunate that we have the resources in our community where parents and kids can get cared for when they need it most. Now, we can’t do everything. No one place can. However, we sure can help in about every situation, whether that is directly taking care of your child and you, or making sure you get connected with a physician or organization that can help you. That is what we are here for. Being a Kid is Awesome. And when a child faces a healthcare struggle or challenge, Beacon Children’s Hospital is here, with you. Sincerely,
Kreg Gruber Chief Operating Officer

W
e understand that parents feel worried when their child becomes sick or injured.
As a parent, you do all you can to help them feel better. Sometimes that means snuggling with your little one under a warm cozy blanket. Sometimes that means comforting them with your homemade chicken noodle soup. And sometimes that means bringing them to us. We’ve got you covered, whether it’s pediatric and NICU care at Elkhart General Hospital, or at the new home for our Beacon Children’s Hospital in downtown South Bend. Beacon Children’s Hospital is home to pediatricians and pediatric specialists whose top priority is making sure your child receives the medical care they need in the right place, at the right time, and in the best way for each patient, whether a sudden health issue arises or a chronic condition is being treated. It’s the reason we embarked on constructing a new home for our Children’s Hospital, and changed its name to better reflect the extensive resources our families can access across the entire health system. We needed more room to provide coordinated and connected care for our patients and their families. We also wanted to provide world-class medical care in a hospital that is specially equipped for little bodies and is conveniently located close to home for our youngest patients and their families. After all, home is the best place to heal. And we believe a Children’s Hospital is the absolute best place for kids. Our 100,000-square-foot hospital serves as the regional leader in pediatrics, welcoming families and providing children with exceptional medical care and advanced technology in the most comfortable environment possible. Our clinical team at Beacon Children’s Hospital cares for infants, children, adolescents and teens, whose families turn to us from 15 counties in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. We also receive patient transfers from 31 referring hospitals, and teach more than 70,000 kids each year to make great life choices through Healthworks! Kids’ Museum. We know what we do matters to a lot of people. That’s the reason we have, in many ways, redesigned the health care experience.
Beacon Children’s Hospital will be the first where mothers who have just delivered can stay in the same room with their baby in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. Our innovative NICU model keeps our families together no matter how premature or sick their baby is. We believe the best place for babies is in their mother’s arms. All families can expect every experience with our Children’s Hospital to be centered around their child. And because family is a vital part of the clinical care team, they are included in conversations that help determine the best treatment plan for their child. Every pediatrics room is private and spacious for families to remain with their child during their stay. This is now the standard of care in the top children’s hospitals in the country because shorter hospital stays translate into lower costs and less stress for children and families. And each patient room at Beacon Children’s Hospital is specially designed to adapt to the child’s changing condition. Rather than transferring rooms, your child remains in the same room with the same care team throughout their stay. Former patients and families helped design and plan our playrooms, teen hideout, family lounge and gathering areas, which provide a comforting respite away from our clinical spaces. If your child requires services that are not immediately available, our specially trained pediatric ground and air emergency transport teams will transport them to the most appropriate place. Beacon is also a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, where, at no cost to patients, Mayo provides second opinions on complex cases without families needing to travel. We want you to know that we didn’t do all this alone. Thousands of people have come together and poured their hearts into providing bright futures for the children we serve. There were hundreds of donors investing in our new Children’s Hospital to ensure the best pediatric care for every family in our community when they need it the most. So whether it’s specialized care for an ongoing health issue, a regular checkup, or a sudden illness or injury, Beacon Children’s Hospital is here for you and your child. After all, Beacon Children’s Hospital is just for kids.

Why I Became A Doctor
Kate Dutkiewicz, MD Pediatric Hospitalist
6
“I became a doctor because, from a very young age, there was nothing else I could imagine being. When I was 3 years old, I told my parents I was going to be a ‘baby doctor,’ and I never wavered from that. As a pediatrician, I spend my time helping to care for vulnerable people who don’t have the ability to care for themselves, and I can’t see myself doing anything else.”
“Growing up, I gradually became aware of children in our community with illnesses and injuries. I saw the pain that caused them and their parents and I wanted to do something about that. Medicine gives me an opportunity to influence the lives of some babies for the better, and that’s a privilege every day.”
Robert White, MD Neonatologist

While our dedicated team at Beacon Children’s Hospital is caring for sick and injured children, the volunteers at Ronald McDonald House are looking after their families. Many of those families are miles from home, but only a short walk from their child. For years, a Ronald McDonald Family Room offered three bedrooms to families at no cost. However, as the Children’s Hospital has grown, so has the space operated by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michiana and staffed by community volunteers. The Ronald McDonald House, which moved and expanded to the Skyway Building across from the Children’s Hospital, contains 20 guest rooms with private bathrooms, in addition to a spacious kitchen, den, laundry, computer area and library. Open seven
days a week, 365 days a year, the Ronald McDonald House provides families a respite for relaxation and a warm meal, and the chance to bond with other families facing similar situations. “We are honored and blessed to serve the families of the children who receive specialized treatment and care from the team at Beacon Children’s Hospital,” said Becky Summers, CEO and President of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michiana. 7
The NICU at Beacon Children’s Hospital is one of the first in the world to keep families together at every step, which is especially important during the first days of life.
Keeping Moms & Babies Together
ROBERT WHITE, MD
The practice of separating moms from their premature babies for any amount of time has been replaced with a new innovative model Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Beacon Children’s Hospital. Studies have shown the benefits of extensive intimate contact between babies born as early as 22 weeks gestation, and their parents, in the first hours of life. “Our new NICU will be the first where mothers who have just delivered can stay in the same room with their NICU baby no matter how premature or sick the baby is,” said Dr. Robert White, director of the Regional Newborn Program. The NICU team expects high-risk babies will have fewer complications, better neurodevelopment and a shorter length of stay as a result of the increased human contact that is fostered in our new NICU model. Our single-family rooms are designed to reduce parental stress, improve parental bonding, provide a private environment that enhances breastfeeding and kangaroo care and supports families to directly participate in their baby’s care. “I think our unit will be a model for our colleagues everywhere,” Dr. White said. “Eventually it will become the standard of care throughout the developed world.”

NICU PARENTS' TOP REQUESTED SONGS: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star You Are My Sunshine Jesus Loves Me He’s Got The Whole World
Music To The Ears The Newborn Intensive Care Unit is a space filled with beeps and blinks from machines that monitor the vital signs of the youngest and most fragile patients at Beacon Children’s Hospital. But it is also a space filled with song. Music therapist Cambrae Reedstrom shows parents how to combine singing, rocking and massage to teach their baby how to better tolerate the environment. Research shows that music therapy helps babies gain more weight, exhibit better vital signs and go home sooner.
CAMBRAE REEDSTROM
Music therapy also has a lot to do with giving an older child choices and promoting the sense of normalcy in Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. “They are in a situation where they are told where to lay, what to eat, what to wear, and what medically is going to happen to them,” Cambrae said. “What songs they want to play, what instrument, fast or slow, loud or soft – it gives the child control, it can help make them more comfortable, and it can mean a less scary experience.”
When Art Is Medicine Kids visit Beacon Children’s Hospital for a variety of health challenges. Sometimes their ailments and diagnoses are life-altering. But music and art, which are familiar to most kids, are ways to help children emotionally process their medical issues. Art therapist Sarah Tyler works one-on-one with patients at the bedside, or along with their parents and siblings, on creative personal projects designed around their strengths, interests and needs. Art is a tool for kids to use over time to emotionally cope with and process what they are going through. It also serves as a distraction from the hospital
setting. “Kids don’t have to be good at drawing to be able to create art. Maybe we paint, or maybe they prefer to work with clay,” Sarah said. “Art and music give them the opportunity to create something that’s unique to them. And we guide them through the process and let them make choices, because in this environment, they don’t always have a lot of options.” 9
Jumping Into Action
LIZ
EASH
Child Life Specialists make choices every day when it comes to comforting patients. Liz Eash made a decision one Friday night that not only calmed a toddler who had been rushed to the Children’s Hospital after swallowing a penny, but also put the child’s anxious mother at ease. Liz had been distracting the 2-yearold girl with toys after she arrived and comforting her with songs as nurses placed an IV. When it was time for the toddler to be wheeled to the operating room, she wouldn’t let go of Liz. “I had gone into surgery quite a few times, so
we checked to make sure it was OK,” Liz said. She quickly dressed in scrubs, jumped into the crib, and accompanied the girl to the OR. “She never cried as we left mom. I held her right up until she fell asleep, and I was there when she woke up,” said Liz, who stayed well past the end of her shift. “It’s just part of what we do in Child Life to help keep kids calm when they are going through what could be a scary situation for them. Whether we are able to help in a big way or a small way, I’m just honored to be a part of it.”

“Where’s Waldo?” Goes Viral It started as a game of hide-and-seek on the Beacon Children’s Hospital construction site. A heartwarming story of construction foreman Jason Haney creating a largerthan-life-sized Where’s Waldo? cutout for pediatric patients to find when they looked out their sixth-floor windows touched more than 3 million people across the U.S. and millions more around the globe. Jason, who works for JJ White of South Bend, built Waldo out of an 8-foot-tall piece of plywood with his daughter, Taylor, who spent time in a hospital as a child. Understanding what hospitalized children go through, Jason devised a unique distraction. He hid the picture book character in a different place every day on the construction site. The kids never knew where to look. One day they found Waldo waving to them from the scaffolding, and the next day they found him boarding the hospital helicopter. “When the story started to spread, it was very unexpected and felt a bit overwhelming,” Jason said about the interview requests that poured in after an article that ran in The South Bend Tribune was picked up by national media.

The story made its way to TODAY, Good Morning America, People.com, The Huffington Post and Bored Panda, as well as print publications, websites, radio shows and broadcast networks in Canada, England, Germany, France, Poland, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Japan and Australia. Jason generously donated the cutout to the Children’s Hospital. “It has taught me that even the smallest gestures can have the most amazing outcome. The reaction has been humbling,” Jason said. “To know that a simple piece of wood can bring so much happiness to so many people, and can take the children’s minds off their pain for a few moments means the world to me.” 11
Building Bright Futures The big red crane used in the construction of Beacon Children’s Hospital often lured patients like Bryce Nowicki to the window. During one of her appointments with the 7-year-old, Angela Gallagher, a pediatrics speech language pathologist at Beacon Children’s Therapy Center, remembers how he wanted to build a crane out of LEGOs®. “What color do we need?” Angela asked. “Red, of course,” Bryce responded, “because the crane is red.” So they piled all the red LEGOs they could find on the table and talked about the different pieces, where to put them, and why. They even discussed counterweights because Bryce built them into his miniature masterpiece as he ran back and forth from window to table.
What most people don’t realize is that Bryce has Tourette Syndrome, so he experienced tremors that made fine motor skills like building with LEGOs more challenging. “The fact that he built this LEGO crane by looking out the window shows his creativity and the work Beacon Children’s Therapy has done,” said his mom, Tracey Mendenhall, of Mishawaka. Crane and construction workers visited Bryce and gave him a neon yellow construction vest that read “Honorary Crane Operator” for completing his replica. His parents were touched by their kind gesture. “Once upon a time he couldn’t hold his hands still,” Tracey said. “So it’s quite an accomplishment. He is such a different kid now.”

The Magic Of Pixie Dust
Nevaeh Garza couldn’t help but feel frustrated and tired. The 10-year-old girl, who has acute lymphoblastic leukemia, had been scheduled for a routine platelet transfusion at Beacon Children’s Hospital. But instead of a quick visit, she had to stay days longer than expected because her white blood cell counts were low and she was running a fever. Her parents could hardly console their little girl as she sobbed, wanting to go home. “You will feel better and you’ll be home soon, baby,” her mom, Becky Garza, of Mishawaka, reassured her daughter. While eating a piece of taffy later that night, Nevaeh lost a baby tooth. She tucked it under her pillow before falling asleep and woke the next morning to the biggest surprise. When she opened her eyes, Nevaeh saw pixie dust all over the floor. She could even make out footsteps – proof the Tooth Fairy had visited her. She reached under her pillow to find a $5 bill and two $1 bills covered with more pixie dust. Nevaeh’s mom felt grateful for the unexpected kindness of the Beacon Child Life team, who made sure the Tooth Fairy could find her daughter and make her smile. “They helped her forget where she was and why she was there, if even for a little while.”

Let’s Do This! Katie Joy Blye has been surprising her parents since the day she was born. Some surprises have been gut-wrenching. Doctors detected her brain swelling during delivery that led to an emergency C-section for mom, Jenni. Katie Joy was diagnosed with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, a condition causing fluid on the brain. She underwent surgeries on her back, legs and eyes and needed braces to stand. “There was some intense grief at first, not understanding the future,” Jenni said. “There was so much pain, so much unknown.” But other surprises have been truly aweinspiring. “We didn’t think she would ever walk,” Jenni said, “and my heart was very broken.” But Katie Joy refused to give up. Additional surgeries, new braces, support from pediatric physical therapists and a new purple walker – her favorite color, provided her the courage she needed. “Let’s do this,” 3-year-old Katie Joy exclaimed, and with the help of therapist Carla Wenger-Nussbaum, she took her first steps and never looked back. “It never ceases to amaze me how children like Katie Joy are able to accomplish great, and often, unexpected things,” Carla said. “To be able to witness and assist in an achievement like walking for Katie Joy and her family, is truly one of the most rewarding things about my job.” Beacon Children’s Hospital has also walked with Jenni, husband Jeff, and big sister Ada, every step of the way. “Katie Joy’s lifesaving treatment happened in the NICU, and with the hospital being 10 minutes from our home, we can immediately receive lifesaving interventions,” Jenni said. “We think of Beacon Children’s Hospital as an extra family. They listened to us and cared for us when everything was falling apart. I feel like I’m not alone and Katie Joy isn’t scared because the nurses are our friends. You’re treated like a person, not a number, and that allows me to focus on what’s important – our daughter.” 14

Katie Joy Blye was among the six children selected to run the bases during Home Run for Life in 2016. Her mom, Jenni Blye, works as a unit assistant in Pediatrics at Beacon Children’s Hospital. Jenni also served on Parent Committees that provided input for the new hospital.
Pretty In Pink AILEEN
CORONA
Aileen Corona had been sitting on the floor during reading time at school when she tried to stand up for a fire drill and heard something “pop” in her leg. An X-ray detected not only a fracture, but also a tumor. The LaPorte tween was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma. She visited Beacon Children’s Hospital for chemotherapy. “One night I heard Aileen sobbing. I found her crying her eyes out because her mom couldn’t be there. A couple of weeks later, she was readmitted and upset again at night. It broke my heart,” said Julie Kowalenko, a charge nurse in Pediatrics and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “I noticed her nails polished to perfection. It gave me an idea.” The next morning Julie shopped for nail polish, files, cotton balls and everything else Aileen needed to open a salon especially for the nurses. They worked out a system so she could earn tickets and prizes. Child Life Specialist Liz Eash helped decorate a pink and purple glittery sign for Aileen’s Nail Salon. Aileen became the unit celebrity. “We normalized what was otherwise a scary experience for Aileen when her parents couldn’t be with her,” Liz said. “It was easy to see how something so little made her feel so much better.” The anticipation of salon customers replaced Aileen’s tears. “It made me so happy because I would get distracted,” Aileen said. “I would wake up and look forward to painting nails.”
“We were so glad to have everyone at the Children’s Hospital care so much about the patient, about Aileen.”

Spring 2012
Some of the toughest decisions for the average teenager are how to spend their allowance and what to do with friends on a Saturday night. But Sam Grewe has never been average. Growing up in Middlebury, Sam loved competing on a field or court year-round. He played football, basketball and ran track, so aches and pains of one kind or another came with the territory. That is, until the seventh grade, when shooting pains in his right leg became excruciating. Doctors diagnosed Sam with osteosarcoma, an aggressive, highly malignant bone cancer. Michelle and Randy Grewe wanted his tumor removed and knee replaced to save their son’s leg. “We had a 13-year-old boy and we knew any other choice was permanent,” Michelle said. “We were not ready to make that decision for him.” But they didn’t have to. Determined to return to sports, Sam bravely decided to have a rare partial amputation called rotationplasty. Doctors removed his knee and turned Sam’s lower leg around so his foot faced backwards when reattached. His ankle became his knee, his foot became his shin, and Sam wears a prosthetic lower leg. “We did not want him to survive
Winter 2017 something like cancer just to live the life of someone who was miserable, grumpy and full of grudges,” Michelle said. Sam spent many months receiving chemotherapy and other treatments close to home at Beacon Children’s Hospital, where the staff in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology helped him keep occupied and stay positive. “The possibility of regaining my athletic ability kept me motivated to fight through the sickness to get my health back. The strong bonds that I made with the doctors and nurses made my whole experience much easier and less painful than it could’ve been,” Sam said. He no longer worries about whether he will be able to achieve his athletic dreams. After earning a place on the United States Paralympic team, he won a silver medal in the high jump at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. Sam hopes to participate in the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. “I would tell kids who are going through something similar to never let their fear decide their fate,” he said. “The bonds and life skills I gained during my cancer treatment at Beacon Children’s Hospital strengthened me into the person I am today.” 17
“They still have issues with their speech and motor skills, but they will overcome and conquer them all. I know they are not where they need to be in life, but we will take one step at a time, one challenge at a time with God, and I believe there is nothing Zakkai and Zakkar cannot overcome.”

Everything About Them Is A Miracle
All she wanted was to hear them cry. After five long years of trying to conceive, the hours before Anaferanji “Nafé” Kapeni gave birth felt like a whirlwind. “When I found out I was pregnant, with twins, my prayers had been answered,” she said. But an abnormal ultrasound at 28 weeks meant Nafé had to be admitted to Memorial Hospital for observation and receive steroid shots for lung development in case she delivered her babies early. While nurses provided much needed words of encouragement, Nafé prayed for a miracle. She received two.

Zakkai Musasa entered the world at 1 pound, 14 ounces and Zakkar Musasa weighed 2 pounds, 6 ounces. “After I heard them cry, I knew my journey as a mother had begun,” Nafé said. Nurses immediately placed the boys on CPAP machines that helped them breathe for most of their 75 days in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. “The nurses were amazing. They allowed me to be a mommy to them, regardless of what machines they were on. I never missed a day,” Nafé said. “They never stopped caring, regardless of the endless questions and requests I had. I wasn’t afraid to leave at night because I knew they were in good hands.” Finding ways to bond with such fragile babies connected to machines with wires and tubes is not always easy. Nafé connected with her beautiful boys through song. “The nurses would ask, ‘Are you going to sing for your babies today?’ To tell you the truth, I was singing to take away my anxiety and nervousness. It wasn’t until later, when I’d sing the same songs at home and they’d cuddle with me just like we cuddled in the NICU, that I realized the power of voice to these precious little souls.” Her twins humble beginnings did not just change Nafé as a person, they also changed her future. “All I wanted was to give back and make a difference in people’s lives, just like the hospital did with my life. If not for the special team in the NICU, I would not have this opportunity,” she said. “I feel like the sky is my limit.” Nafé went back to school and earned her LPN. She is working toward an associate’s degree in nursing and ultimately hopes to become a nurse practitioner specializing in pediatrics. “I owe this to the staff at the Children's Hospital and to my boys. Everything about them is a miracle.”

Beacon Saved Her Life
overcomer ADA
SPIER
Ada was one of six children chosen to run the bases for Home Run for Life at Four Winds Field with the South Bend Cubs.
Two days after Christmas, Angela and Roger Spier sat by their daughter’s bedside and prayed. They spent weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Beacon Children’s Hospital with their 4-month-old adopted daughter Ada, who had contracted RSV. Ada, who had been born at 25 weeks, also suffered from chronic lung disease and Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that can complicate respiratory issues. Ada’s parents not only prayed that she would beat the virus, but also that they’d see her smile again. Ada loved smiling – all the time. “We used to have to convince doctors that she wasn’t feeling well, because she smiled even when she was so sick,” Angela said. When Ada took a dramatic turn for the worse, the doctor leveled with the Spiers. He had one more ventilator to try, but it would be best to say their goodbyes. “Our tears flowed as we begged God to let her 20
live,” Angela said. Nurses from other floors came to visit Ada as her parents stayed close. In time, God answered their prayers. “One of my favorite memories was when Ada finally didn’t need the ventilator anymore and she opened her eyes. She smiled so big as if to say, ‘I did it! I lived!’” Angela said. Ada will have many hurdles to overcome living with Prader-Willi syndrome. “But I guarantee she will. She has the fight, and the will, like no one you’ve ever seen,” Angela said. The Spiers credit Beacon Children’s Hospital – the PICU doctors, intensivists, nurses and Child Life Specialists – for aiding in Ada’s healing and saving her life. “The doctors and nurses were amazing because they went above and beyond while we were in their unit for six weeks,” Angela said. “So many went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and assure me in the scariest of times. They became our second family.”

For some children, the normal milestones and delights of childhood are interrupted with doctors’ visits and hospital stays. Zoe Klawitter wanted to help them and bring just a little bit of magic into Beacon Children’s Hospital. “Zoe was just five years old when she gave me the best birthday present of my life: a bank she made all by herself,” her great-uncle, Pat Flynn, said. “When I asked her what we should do with the bank, she responded, ‘Let’s help sick children, Uncle Pat.’” Thus began a journey between great-uncle and great-niece, a journey that raised over $600 for the new home of Beacon Children’s Hospital. When Zoe brought her gift to Beacon Health Foundation, her eyes shone and her personality sparkled as she shared her story. Zoe’s compassionate gift of her time and treasure has enhanced the enchantment that imbues the Children’s Hospital from its playrooms to its gardens. Thank you, Zoe, for setting such a special example of how to live one’s life well by caring for others.

Home Run For Life And The Community The South Bend Cubs and Beacon Children’s Hospital have been partnering since 2014 to bring Cub fans the Home Run for Life program. Each season, Beacon Health Foundation and the Cubs recognize brave children, with help from their families, physicians and health care team, who are battling or have overcome significant medical events in their young lives. “To see a young child with their family, as they run bases, being cheered on by a crowd of over 8,000 fans is amazing,” says Phil Newbold, CEO of Beach Health System. “The smile on the family’s face is what the event is all about.” In addition to celebrating these heroic children, Home Run for Life events raise money for Beacon’s Children Hospital. The spirit of generosity of the Michiana community during these events has raised over $50,000. We thank all of the families who have taken part in these events.

The Heartbeat of our Future As the original people, or Neshnabek, of our region, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi has an uninterrupted history of lifting up fellow Pokagon citizens and everyone whose lives they touch. One need only look around the Great Lakes Region to witness the Pokagon Band’s influence, service, and unparalleled contributions to the quality of life of every community member. No one has been lifted higher by the Pokagon Band’s compassion and generous spirit than the youngest patients cared for at Beacon Children’s Hospital. As the MedFlight helicopter rises into the air, our community rests assured, knowing that every critically-ill or injured infant or child is minutes from receiving life-saving care. Each day, as Beacon’s Pediatric Emergency Transport Ambulance picks up a child in Middlebury or Dowagiac, a little heart continues to beat, a young life cradled as it begins its life journey. The Pokagon Band played an instrumental role in providing this lifesaving equipment, elevating the quality of pediatric health care in northcentral Indiana and southwestern Michigan. “Our children are our future and the heartbeat of our community,” says Chairman John Warren. “When I look to the sky, I know a life has changed,” said Kreg Gruber, Chief Operating Officer, Beacon Health System. “I also know that an entire community came together in support of that person and family. We are blessed to have such strong and critically-important partners in the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi and the community of friends they have built in support of Beacon Children’s Hospital.” For the smallest of lives saved and changed, thank you, or as the Pokagon people say, "Miigwetch."

REMEMBERING ISAAC: The Isaac Ray Steiner Family Room The Isaac Ray Steiner Family Room in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit provides an oasis of comfort, dignity, and privacy in which parents and caregivers meet with our physicians to discuss matters related to their child. This important resource came to fruition through a unique philanthropic collaboration between the Steiner and Torres families. Rob Steiner and Isaac Torres met in 1999 while Isaac was establishing InterCambio Express in Goshen. What began as a business relationship evolved into a close friendship, and, in 2006, when Rob and his wife Sarah’s second son was born, they named him Isaac. At 5 years old, Isaac Steiner was diagnosed with medulloblastoma brain cancer, and underwent surgery and radiation therapy. Throughout the next year, he received chemotherapy and additional treatment, which fortunately was easily accessible from the Steiner’s home in Goshen. Isaac experienced tremendous support from the community, and the thousands following his journey via social media became known collectively as “Isaac Nation.” In the fall of 2012, he was declared cancer-free, but the cancer returned several weeks later. He passed away on March 6, 2013 at the age of seven. Sarah reflects that “I still picture Isaac as the bright, attentive, inquisitive, and beautiful boy that he was.”

The following year, Rob and Sarah mobilized Isaac Nation to benefit the Children’s Hospital by participating in the Sunburst Races. The inaugural Isaac Nation charity team consisted of 100 participants, with Rob completing the half-marathon. In 2015, he decided to run the full marathon, and Isaac Nation garnered nearly 200 Sunburst team members. During the weeks leading up to the race, Rob and Isaac Torres were coincidentally on the same speaking program at a Kiwanis luncheon, with Rob thanking those in attendance who had been so supportive of his Isaac Nation initiative. After the meeting, Isaac informed Rob that he wanted to partner with him to make a significant gift to name a location for his late son Isaac in the new Beacon Children’s. Isaac and Conchita Torres generously pledged $100,000, and, along with the funds that the Steiners and their Isaac Nation team raised during the 2014 and 2015 Sunburst Races, a marvelous gift of more than $165,000 resulted. It has now become a cherished annual tradition for the Steiner and Torres families to run Sunburst together in Isaac’s memory. EINER ES & ISAAC ST ISAAC TORR

Beacon Connected Care is available in Indiana and Michigan. It’s a private, secure, fast and easy way to see a doctor 24/7 on an Internet-enabled computer or smartphone — even on holidays. Doctors can see you for conditions like colds, fever, rashes, stomach flu, sinus infections, pink eye and headaches — they can prescribe appropriate medications such as antibiotics, too. Employers interested in telehealth plans including travel coverage, call 574.647.1840.
