SIDS Views: Pacific SIDS: Operationalize the High Level Political Forum including through an effective monitoring and evaluation mechanism and strengthened national and regional sustainable development coordination mechanisms; Barbados Outcome: 162: SIDS issues…should be included in the agenda of the HLPF and the reformed ECOSOC with appropriate linkages to national and regional implementation mechanisms. 162. We further call on the UN regional commissions to play a significant role in supporting SIDS in the implementation of the BPOA, MSI and the outcome of the Samoa Conference, including by working in close cooperation with SIDS own existing regional institutions. 3
HLPF Regional Meetings Other Regions: ECLAC, ESCWA, ECE, ECA Asia-Pacific Sustainable Development Forum: ( 19-21 May 2014
Pattaya, Thailand):
∗Overarching priorities and concerns for the post-2015 development agenda of the Asia Pacific region while fully recognizing the sub-regional specificities (i.e., the vulnerabilities to climate change and natural disasters, overfishing and pollution, and dependencies) ∗Means of Implementation (MOI) inclusive of Financing (Set Up Committee), Science Technology and Innovation (Set Up Committee), Trade, Capacity Building, Partnerships and Governance for a transformation towards sustainable development were also highlighted. 4
ASIA PACIFIC SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FORUM ∗ Future APSDF to maximize synergy with ESCAP Commission sessions; ∗ Supplemented by regular sub-regional consultations in collaboration with relevant subregional organizations ∗ Facilitate political commitment and ownership over the process, develop a regional voice on common priorities, engage stakeholders, promote solidarity and universality, ∗ Promote a stronger science-policy interface, and function as a mechanism for ensuring accountability. 5
RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Encourage PIDF involvement in future APSDF and in preparatory sub-regional consultations in/for the Pacific; 2. Build commitment and ownership of the PIDF (and of the APSDF) by strengthening national processes and mechanisms that can serve both; and to report back to next PIDF on steps taken; 3. In line with its multi-stakeholder platform and partnership focus, endorse working with other regional entities to pursue PIDF’s bluegreen agenda and to support the HLPF 4. Task the PIDF Secretariat to pursue, in line with its decisions in 2013, the issue of Financing Sustainable Development; and, in line with PIDF’s ongoing focus on innovation and the importance of culture, the issue of Science and Technology and how it can best promote the cause of inclusiveness and sustainability in policy and in values, culture and religion 6
