Why Green Growth is Important for Melanesia • The biggest terrestrial ecosystem in the Pacific; • Biggest populations therefore pressure on food and water systems; • Rapidly developing therefore pressure on land and eco assets; • Pressure to perform economically to protect investment rates of return and self-reliance;

Need to take Action: Green Growth Framework • 2012 MSG Leaders under Chairmanship of Prime Minister Bainimarama agreed at Boron House to develop a Green Growth Framework – political leadership; • Because Green Growth is an integral tool for achieving sustainable development, Leaders agreed that Green Growth should be part of an overarching, high-level aspiration which led to it becoming part of the MSG Environment and Climate Change Declaration • Declaration provides the collective political direction and commitment for all members and contain the actions that we as a group, to take advantage of our critical mass have agreed can do together successfully;

Supporting Developments • Create body of knowledge and share knowledge through an e-knowledge platform; • Establish e-knowledge platform on green growth supported by CTA; - www.msg.infor • Consult members on strategies and actions; • Mainstream these strategies and actions in national sustainable development strategies ( working with partners IUCN UNESCAP and GIZ); • Develop a new measure of economic development (supported by Christensen Fund);

MSG Green Growth Framework • Vision and goals • Objectives • Strategies and actions • Policy implications • Resourcing • Partnerships • Monitoring and evaluation.

Lessons Learnt…. • Clear Political and high-level commitment and Direction crucial; • Establish and share body of knowledge; • Work with Governments to identify strategies • Determine a practical and inclusive process to mainstream green growth strategies in national budgets and plans; • Need partnerships; • Establish new measures(indicator of well being).

Final Points • Definition must be relevant and reflect local contexts; • Do not force or rush to get consensus, must be desired. • Different actions for different contexts. • Worthwhile and inspiring.
