Collect a piece of Bermuda
Our banknotes and commemorative coins are popular collectors’ items, making unique gifts and perfect mementos of the island.
The 2009 vertical banknote series was commemorated by six colourful coins including the Bluebird, Whistling Frog and Longtail.
Bermuda’s first commemorative decimal coinage was issued in 1970. Since then, coin sets have been minted in a number of precious metals.
Will you collect one?
A worldwide first, the island’s three-lobed sided triangle coin was launched in 1996 and voted ‘Coin of the Year’ in 1998 by World Coin Magazine.

There is always plenty going on in Bermuda over the summer, and with the 35th America’s Cup reaching its dramatic conclusion, the Bermuda Carnival kicking off this weekend, and Cup Match just around the corner there is little sign of a break in the party atmosphere gripping the island. It is in that spirit that the RG Summer magazine comes as a celebration of all that is happening over the next few days and weeks. Our cover, inspired by the body art of Alshante Foggo, is bold, bright and topical; while inside you’ll find a guide to what’s hot and what’s not when it comes to fashion this summer. Speaking of which, we’ve had a chat with some of the island’s biggest names in the industry as the organisers of the Bermuda Fashion Festival begin their

Our feature on homelessness in Bermuda in RG Spring touched a nerve with many of you, and we appreciated the feedback on an issue we felt strongly about. There will be more of that to come in the issues ahead, but summer is about fun and that’s why our Love on the Rocks article gets top billing this time around. In& Whether it’s standing in the kitchen or around a barbecue, the heart and soul of any party is invariably where the food is being prepared. With summer now upon us thoughts turn to eating outside, and sitting under the stars with good food, good wine and good company.
Standing at the grill while your friends and family are sat elsewhere is never very fun, and so finding a way to combine the two is often at the heart of any changes we choose to make to our gardens or patios. However, where a barbecue and a couple of chairs used to suffice; now there are countless suggestions for what the industry calls “an outdoor living centre. In reality that can mean anything from a barbecue with some well placed outdoor furniture and lighting, to a fully covered kitchen complete with granite countertops, a fridge and a sink. With options to suit every budget here are some ideas for how you can take your indoors, outdoors this summer.

READY-MADE SPACES “We’ve been doing this for three years now
If DIY is not your thing then there are a variety of companies that can help you put together an outdoor space to be proud of, without necessarily breaking the bank. Bermuda Brickyard, for example, carries a range of products from Bull barbecues and Cambridge Armortec, which provides outdoor kitchen sets that can be installed relatively easily. Bull’s stainless steel barbecues come with a lifetime guarantee and, because they last in Bermuda’s climate when others won’t, are the only ones that Peter Schindel, at Bermuda Brickyard, will bring in. While more expensive than other options – a barbecue with four burners and a rotisserie spit will set you back $3,250 – they are fully
and the only thing we stock is the four-burner because it is by far the most popular model,” Mr Schindel said. “We can special order, and we frequently do. I’ve found that the best thing to do is special order because it doesn’t take long and everybody wants something a little bit different.” Cambridge Armortec kits provide several options, which range from grill islands, to whole kitchens that include bread ovens, fire pits, and built-in fridges. “People usually have an idea of what they want, but not all the time,” Mr Schindel said. “There is one client, we are going to do something right off of his kitchen; we are going to do a fireplace and a built-in barbecue and then another area with a fire pit in and some shade. “I have three master masons that work for us that are really good and they can do anything. We can do pavers or brick for the whole outdoors.

DO IT YOURSELF SPACES
Fancy yourself as something of a builder? Then why not get some friends together and build yourself the ultimate (outdoor) man cave with fire for cooking meat and a place to keep the drinks cold. There are plenty of options for do-it-yourself kits on the internet and not all of them require a master’s in architecture or degree in engineering to understand and put together. However, you may want to get someone qualified to put in the gas and electric, just in case. Building

construction may take weeks, not to mention the cost of labour. However, constructing an outdoor kitchen using a prefab kit can take as little as four hours. This could reduce your budget by as much as 40 per cent, and your outdoor kitchen will be ready to use the very same day. Here are some examples of kits available online that with a little planning can help you turn your garden into the outdoor kitchen of your dreams.

A Scented Space A patio is a perfect place to grow scented plants because it’s a spot you’re sure to sit for long enough to really appreciate the fragrance.
To get the most out of your space you’ll want to use a variety of plants with a long or nearly continuous bloom, or those that bloom in succession throughout the season so there’s always something scented the air.
Where to begin? • Clad fences and walls with climbers so you’ll have fragrance that swirls around you. • Build beds with medium-sized shrubs and perennials that bloom in sequence for a custom fragrance mix throughout the season.
• Line paths or edge decks and patios with smaller shrubs or a swath of lavender or rosemary that will release fragrance as you brush by. • And finally, fill a few pots with fragrant topiary or standards such as gardenia or lantana.
There are plenty of really great plants that are ideal for scenting a patio. Here are just a few of our favourites.
Jasmine For a scented flower on the vine then Jasminum sambac (Arabian Jasmine) is perfect for a space that gets a lot of sunlight. It needs rich well-drained soil, has shiny dark green leaves and fragrant little white flowers. If you want something in a pot, then Snowbush pink jasmine is a perfect plant. It has an airy, delicate look, and is best left to grow rather than be manicured. For a burst of colour with less powerful scents, then these plants will complement the above and give you an outdoor living space you and your guests will love.

Blue Salvia is a favourite of many gardeners because it’s easy to grow, flowers profusely all summer, and is wonderfully tolerant to drought. It’s a great choice for both beds and borders and containers. You can put together a show-stopping combo by growing Blue Salvia with anything, but it’s particularly nice with purple-leaf peppers such as Black Pearl.

Begonia Begonias are warm-climate plants from a huge genus, most of which are valued for their ability to provide long-lasting colour in shady or low-light situations. Some throw large, lush flowers in extravagant colours, others make their statement with beautifully marked foliage that has the beauty of flowers but lasts longer, and the best recent introductions offer compelling fragrance as well.
Night Blooming Jessamine These small greenish white flowers have superbly sweet fragrance, and provide an intoxicating addition to the evening scented garden. Ideal for use as a hedge, screen or divider, it is partial to full sunlight.
Pentas Imagine flocks of colourful butterflies visiting your garden all summer long! That’s what you’ll get when you add pentas to your space. Pentas develop sparkling, star-shaped flowers all summer long in bold hues of red, white, lavender, purple or pink.

Catherine Quin There aren’t many fashion designers with law degrees, but then Catherine Quin is not your everyday designer. Back in Bermuda for her pre-Fall Collection show which took place at the Hamilton Princess Hotel on Monday, the Bermudian designer took time out to discuss her journey, her philosophy, and why bringing her show to the island made perfect sense.
Law to fashion isn’t the usual route, how did that come about? “I never knew anyone who worked in the industry growing up and I had always had an interest [in fashion] and always used to collect all the Vogues, and keep them preciously in storage. “But I grew up around lawyers or people who worked in banks, or in economics, and my family were very much [telling me] ‘you need to get the academic education that you are capable of’. “I never felt like it [law] was a disadvantage, I just wasn’t that enthusiastic about it. And then I started working right by Central Saint Martins [in London] and I would do evening courses there in fashion design and marketing as an antidote to my very corporate, serious job, and it went from there.”

What was your first impression of Bermuda’s dating scene?
What a
small pond!
I've never wanted
to date/ have sex

Charlotte For me, as a local, the dating scene has never really been one of actual dating in our culture,
which I think needs to change.
Samantha What a small pond! I’ve never wanted to date/have sex with someone a friend of mine already
has and this limits the pool even more. I was also cognisant that a one-night stand here means potentially running into that person time and again, unlike back home. I was also surprised at how very homogenised the expat community is. Anglo, predominantly international finance background. Very little artistic, civil servant, blue-collar type expats here. Not that I strictly date expats. But my Bermudian experience has been eye-opening. Bermudian men often cheat. And it seems to be a commonly accepted practice. I don’t know if it’s because people grow up seeing men cheat, but men seem to do it and women seem to turn a blind eye.
Miranda I found it challenging as most people moved to the island with a significant other. Carrie A whole new world to discover. I was hesitant at first, before moving here, knowing it was a small
scene. However the opportunity to meet fresh faces with new people traveling in and out from all over the world was exciting to me.
Have you received any good advice about dating in Bermuda?
Miranda A work colleague told me that if I thought I was moving to the island to meet Prince Charming, I
was in for a big surprise. They told me dating in Bermuda is difficult.
Samantha Someone told me to make sure I had a social outlet other than work, which was fantastic ad-
vice. I’m not into dating coworkers. Awkward!
Carrie A good tip of dating here versus New York someone told me – in New York there are lots of people
you want to meet, but it’s harder to meet them. In Bermuda it’s much easier to meet people, but may not always be the people you want to meet!

How do you think dating has changed for you from when you were in your twenties?
What are some of the things that make it difficult to date in Bermuda?

What is your relationship status and what are your ultimate relationship goals?
Samantha I’m single as hell. I’d like to find the right person
and settle down, maybe even get married. But I’ll never settle for someone who isn’t the right one.

How do you think your emotional state affects your ability to attract someone?
Charlotte What you give out is what you get back. That’s
something I’ve learned and I think it’s very important to be mindful of.
Samantha Confidence is sexy. It shows on your face. While
out, I tend to attract men when I am laughing and having a good time with my friends, not looking around to see who’s there.

Carrie I don’t go out with this checklist saying I’m
looking for this exact type of person – life doesn’t work
that way. I’m all about the connection I have with someone, and you never know who that’s going to be with. Overall, the most important qualities to me are to be a good, authentic person, to know how to have fun and make me laugh, to have good energy and to be on my level – meaning have your shit together! I want someone who’s on track with where I’m at in life – I’m not looking to take care of someone else’s issues!

Do you have a specific sort of person that you look for or are you open to trying new things?
Samantha I don’t have a list of things I’m looking for.
I will admit, my taste is unusual. You never know what you will find attractive until you give someone a chance. I’m more into trying to find common interests than ticking boxes on tall, dark, handsome, rich, etc. Beyond chemistry, I want a guy to be considerate of my time. Have you ever organised a date for when you are travelling? Was it successful and do you do it often?
Miranda Yes, I have! It’s fun because you can be anonymous.
I organise dates overseas a couple times a year.
Samantha Yes, and I do it often. I’ve had some super fun,
spontaneous dates while travelling. I’ve had these turn romantic but also stay completely in the friend zone.
Charlotte I haven’t but it sounds like something fun to try!
Do you think men in Bermuda are intimidated about a woman who is wealthy in her own right?
Samantha I think that men in general are intimated by
successful women. We can do what we want, when we want.
From a gender role perspective, it has got to be tough for a man to deal with not being “needed”. I sometimes find it hard to ask for help but have realised that men like to provide help.
Charlotte I can only speak from a woman’s perspective and
feel that maybe it’s the male ego that can’t get past a woman
being more successful than them. I could be wrong but from my friends that I’ve spoken to, that is the ultimate consensus.
When it comes to first impressions, what’s an automatic turn-off when you first meet someone?
It would be good to get Bermudian males POV on this. Women

How did you end up in Kenya? I have now lived in Africa for four years and it all happened a bit by accident. While working with Deloitte Bermuda as a Human Capital consultant I took a short sabbatical and travelled to Tanzania for a six-week visit. I needed a change of scenery and a moment to decide which direction I wanted my life to take. While I was there I met Tanzanians in my age group who were disrupting the market with various businesses and concepts. Their drive began to energise me and my vision shifted and I started to understand what the world meant when they were saying that Africa was the world’s emerging business frontier. I was able to identify a range of gaps in the market. I ended up heading back to Bermuda and leaving my job, packing my bags and moving to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. That was in 2013. I started a company called Global Partner Solutions Ltd. Our core business is market entry and business development strategies for the African market. Within the first three months of business, I was able to win a large Dubai-based client. This caused me to have to open both a Tanzanian and a Kenyan office. I eventually moved to Kenya as it is the business hub of East Africa and most global clients are demanding that market. Kenya is growing at a rapid rate, has a large educated human capital base, and is also the tech hub of Africa. I eventually closed my
There has been a ton of trial and error, hitting of walls, tears and having to find the will to keep pushing and growing in a culture and country that is foreign to my own. The reward of seeing something that you have built develop is worth the constant fight and hard work. Four years later I still wake up every single day feeling incredibly blessed for this unconventional path that I have chosen. The continent offers so much in terms of natural beauty, deep rooted culture and my lifestyle in Nairobi is one that I couldn’t pay for in the west of the world with safaris on the weekend, a high standard of living and an amazing group of friends.
Where did you go to school? What did you study? I attended the University of North Carolina in Charlotte as well as studying International Relations at the Paris-Sorbonne University. In Bermuda, I attended Bermuda High School. Since high school, education has been less about academia and more about exposure, and equipping myself with the tools to be fearless and to be able to sit in any boardroom, or any meeting, and to think and respond critically with the world’s best. This is what has carried me throughout my travels and unconventional career path.

sories out of East Africa. It’s all very exciting and will make a huge social impact on the education of girls and working environment of women on this side of the world. (More to come on this!). I never want to lose my excitement for life and if that means that I have to constantly move locations or take on new challenges to do that, I will be relentless in the fight for my happiness and the fulfillment of my purpose.
24Hours In Nairobi 1. The place you most like to eat breakfast: I absolutely love a new Parisian coffee shop that has popped up in Nairobi called Le Grenier a Pain. Their baked goods, quiche and salads are absolutely delicious and they also offer free wi-fi and ample space to work out of their coffee shop if you need a change of scenery out of the office. 2. Favourite hideaway: The spa at the Kempinmski hotel is my favourite local escape in Nairobi. They have a gorgeous rooftop pool, a delicious menu and the treatments are heavenly. I’ve spent many a weekend there with a good book, and disconnected from my phone and laptop. 3. If you could only eat at one restaurant during a visit: 45

degrees Kitchen is a gem. They have the most scrumptious menu and fantastic ambiance and leaves me dreaming about their food even when I’m outside of Nairobi. You must try their crab cakes and seafood gumbo! 4. A must-see attraction: As cliché as it may sound, with only 24 hours in Nairobi, you must visit the Nairobi National Park. With it being situated only 20 minutes out of the city, you can get an entire safari experience within two hours, along with a visit to a Masai village. Perfect! 5. Best place to stay: I love Westwood hotel in Westlands, Nairobi. It’s a boutique hotel with stunning indigenous modern decor and has the most amazing garden and patio, which combines modern graffiti art within this garden setting. It’s one of the city’s gems. 6. City’s best-kept secret: Nairobi is known for its amazing pop-up events: restaurants, music festivals and parties. You have to have your ear to the ground to know about them. They pull together the melting pot of cultures

that make up Kenya and usually celebrate culture, food and music. The ones that I can recommend that happen annually and sometimes quarterly are: Dinner en Blanc Nairobi, a very hip and trendy all-white dinner; Blankets and Wine, a quarterly music festival that bring in global artists for an amazing day party; and Pop-up Nairobi Dinners, held at a secret location in the city with a private chef and a mystery menu. 7. Best place for people watching: I enjoy K1 Market Sundays where they have a live band, local goods and a yummy brunch menu. This is an amazing place to people watch and enjoy a day with friends. Doing a ritual jumping dance with the Masai of Kenya; Dinner en Blanc – all white dinner in Nairobi; with my company GPS in the boardroom; Posing in Zanzibar
8. Top night spot: Brew Bistro located in Westlands is a cool place to party, and lounge on the weekends. They have great DJs every weekend.

We’ve all been there. Your week at work was tough and the prospect of hitting the bars in Bermuda fills you with dread, rather than joy. Rock fever is setting in and the only thing that will get you through is the thought of that quick trip you’ve got planned – escape, sweet escape. The question then becomes: where to go and what to do? A golf trip, shopping, a show and dinner in the city, one flight or two, there are plenty of choices for a few quiet days away. n o g n i r B t a e H e th Summer is here and that means it’s time to get grilling (if you haven’t done so already). Marinades are an essential part of the taste of summer, adding some flavour to that perfect outdoor meal. There are endless options too, with the limits of your imagination the only boundary when it comes to creating different marinades. There are rules though, a 50/50 split between oil and acidic is generally recommended, with vinegar, yogurt and citrus juices the most common of these acids. Other things to keep in mind include:
Of course, not all of us have the time to experiment with different sauces, or take the time to prepare meals ahead of schedule; which is why the island’s grocers provide, to a greater or lesser degree, meat that has already been prepared with a particular flavour and use in mind. Tenderising Vinegar, yogurt and citrus juices have some ability to tenderise meats, but again this is concentrated on the surface; these ingredients won’t penetrate very far beyond the exterior. For greatest impact, use thinner cuts like skirt or flank steak. Seafood is an exception: due to the shorter protein fibres of seafood, acids can actually start to “cook” the food if soaked too long, so keep seafood marinating time brief.

Burgers, skewers, chicken breasts and steak all get the same careful treatment. “We want all of our items [in store] to be different, we want each

How Long to Marinate? Fish and seafood do best with just a short soak; an hour or two at most, and no more than 20 minutes if your marinade is very acidic. Thirty minutes to an hour is good for porous tofu and most vegetables. RECIPE
Spicy Honey Chicken We know you all have your go-to marinades for the summer, but this one is worth a try if you get the chance. This spicy honey chicken is marinated in a southwest chipotle paste and then basted with a honey-vinegar mixture during the grilling process, for the perfect, crispysweet glaze!
Grill It Up INGREDIENTS: 4 chicken breasts, about 2lbs; 1 Tbsp vegetable/canola oil; 1 tsp garlic powder; 2 tsp chili powder; 1/2 tsp onion powder; 1/2 tsp coriander; 1 tsp kosher salt; 1 tsp cumin; 1 Tbsp pureed chipotle pepper with adobo sauce; 1/2 cup honey; 1 Tbsp Cider Vinegar. DIRECTIONS: Combine the oil, garlic powder, chili powder, onion powder, coriander, salt, cumin, and chipotle puree in a gallon size zip-top bag. Squish until mixed well. Add the chicken, zip bag shut, and squish the bag around until all the chicken pieces are covered with the marinade. Refrigerate a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes. Grill each chicken breast for four to five minutes per side on medium heat, or until the thickest part of the chicken breast reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. While the chicken is grilling, warm the honey so it’s runny and add the cider vinegar. Reserve two tablespoons to drizzle on just before eating. Baste each side of the chicken breast right at the end of grilling. Enjoy!
Without a Grill? You could also make this recipe in your oven - instead of preheating the grill, turn on your oven’s broiler. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and cook chicken for 5 minutes. Turn chicken over and continue cooking for 5 more minutes. Take chicken out of oven, brush on 1/2 of the glaze, and return to oven for 3 more minutes. Remove from oven, turn chicken one last time, and brush on remaining glaze. Let cook for 3-4 more minutes, then serve.

Body art is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Alshante Foggo, who is more famous for decorating the clothes and shoes that people wear than using skin as her canvas. Still, she has been dabbling more and more with the medium since being asked to get involved in a project for the City of Hamilton and the Bermuda Fashion Festival a couple of years ago. “I don’t think it [body painting] changes [my approach],” she says. “The first time it was a matter of seeing how it came out, how it lasted, trial and error – using some of the paints I use for walls or shoes, and seeing how it can work on the body. “What I usually use is acrylic paint, so it’s very vivid and it comes out nice and bright.”
When talking to Ms Foggo you begin wondering what might happen if she were to ever embrace the dark side of art. It is a difficult concept to come to terms with given her boundless energy, and the happy place from which she produces her work. In fact, we are unlikely to ever see darker images from Ms Foggo because she denies it the oxygen that would allow it to become a living, breathing entity. “My art is happy energy, good energy, peaceful, it’s bold. I try to incorporate stuff that looks happy and fun, and youthful in some way. I don’t want it to be dark and sad in a sense,” she says. “I try to explore more the warmer side of arts and colours, rather

than the darker, deeper sort of things.”
4. PHOTOGRAPHY BY NHURI BASHIR
Unsurprisingly Ms Foggo’s art is driven by her emotions. “Sometimes I’m not in the [right] mood to be creative, and if I’m not in a good space I will get up and leave it [the piece] alone,” she says. Much like her personality, Ms Foggo’s approach to art is largely carefree, and by her own admission her best work comes “when I am not given structure, I personally feel it works out better when I [go with the] flow”.
She hopes that soon she will be able to show the island that carefree approach in her first solo exhibition which is coming “before the year is out”. “I want the whole island to attend,” she says. “It is going to be my heart and soul put into this project. I have been developing this for a few years. I am just trying to take my time with it, so that I love it and I am completely satisfied with what I put out. “It’s going to be a story. I like to paint faces and things like that, so I think it’s going to be a story of things I have explored.”

good since hubby loves me just the way I am. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t mean that sentiment to encourage me to slack on getting fit, but whatev, he really should have been clearer. He says passive encouragement, I say implicit approval of my hard-earned sedentary lifestyle; you say tomato *music notes*… But I digress. Knowing myself, I figured that just the want to be fit wouldn’t work so I decided instead to throw myself all butt cheeks in and sign up for Bermuda Heroes Weekend/Carnival. Yeah, I totally don’t do anything by halves. Not even, by quarters to be fair. I’m pretty much going for abject failure or DE ABS O’STEEL! No, I don’t have unrealistic expectations, why’d you ask?

Where was I? Ah, yes, so what is my plan, you ask? Well, joining my company’s fitness challenge, of course. Because having all of Bermy see my failure to eradicate probably even a lone fat cell isn’t bad enough, let’s let my whole company witness my inability to, well, fitness. And then I remembered why I even had the thought of the BHW idea in the first place. I have friends who I adore do it last year. They are more fit than me (obvs this isn’t hard) but they aren’t supermodels. Courageous as they come but not models. And then I also remember seeing the videos from last year and seeing the many shapes and sizes and costumes and I remember not thinking about any of that because I saw the joy and fun in each person’s eyes. I saw the dancing and the cama-
