or petrolheads, it’s Nirvana, the gold-plated showroom, top of their bucket list. From the 7th to 17th March this year, over 660,000 visitors descended on the Palexpo convention centre in Geneva, Switzerland for the 89th Geneva Motor Show, or more correctly, Le Salon international de l’automobile. I was supposed to go, but my wife had me booked to wash the windows, clean and gas the car (the irony!) and mow the lawn, so maybe next year…
The statistics that accompany the show are truly staggering. Aside from the vast number of visitors, there were 141 production cars (from the Abarth 124 Rally Tribute to the Zeno TSR-S “Grotta Azzura” Blue – I hadn’t heard of it either) and 41 concept cars (from the Alfa Romeo Tonale to the Volkswagen T-Roc R). On top of that there were also sections for electric and alternative powered vehicles, converted cars, accessories, special bodywork and design, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and the maintenance industry, giving a total of over 900 vehicles on display with 150 of them being world or European premiers, all held in seven exhibition halls covering a total of 102,000 square metres, or 25.2 acres. Which is a lot of people, a lot of cars and a lot of property. One of the most interesting features of car shows, and of relevance to the general motorist, is the display of concept cars by major

manufacturers. They are designed to demonstrate the probable shape and look of the next new model, which is often not more than a year or two away from full-scale production. Bermuda’s size and power limits deny us the opportunity to own most of these models. However, we might soon see the new Jeep Renegade eAWD, the Mitsubishi ASX, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio and Twingo, the Smart Forease+ and the Mitsubishi Multivan 6.1 (as a taxi). All of these were on display, some with extreme design features which may, or may not, make it into the final production model. Looking back over the years, it is noticeable how the tone of the major motor shows has changed and, in my view, improved. The launch of a new model by a major manufacturer is usually a serious theatrical event, featuring music (loud), smoke and mirrors, a dramatic unveiling (either from under a wrap or from behind a screen or smoke) and,

previously, scantily clad young ladies, who draped themselves seductively over the front of the car. This year, things were quite different. For example, the new Ferrari F8 Tributo was unwrapped by four young men in smart suits, and there were no female embellishments present when the Aston Martin Vanquish Vision Concept was unveiled. And other changes are in the air. Some manufacturers are now choosing to launch new vehicles outside of the motor show circuit, and some elected not to even attend the Geneva show, including Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo. Another difference from earlier years is the huge emphasis on electric cars. Most of the bespoke, smaller manufacturers are exclusively

And take Citroen for example, maker of iconic designs such as the 2CV and the Safari. They chose to celebrate their century by unveiling the Ami One, a small boxy all-electric car with a top speed of 30mph and a range of just 60 miles – a city car if ever there was one and probably ideal for Bermuda. So, you might
see that here sometime soon. Changed days indeed. I’m sure we would all love to own an Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar or Range Rover, but, being realistic, what would your pick be from the above? I think I’d go with the new Citroen Ami One. See you at the show next year. n

Mobile Mechanic Photography Blaire Simmons
What’s your full name? (For the record) Brian Rocha Bulhoes Are you based anywhere? No, I do all my work on site with my business van. What is your background? (education, apprentice, how long have you been working, etc.) I am a Certified Marine Specialist, and I am currently studying to become a ASE master technician. What sorts of things does Mobile Mechanic do? Everything from marine repairs, automotive repairs, heavy equipment repairs to industrial and marine generators. What is your favourite job as a mechanic? To see a job being completed and seeing the customer happy with my work, but also since I am mobile there is nothing better then to be able to have a different job every day in many different locations. When someone calls you, what are the next steps? What can they expect? When someone calls me the first thing I like to get addressed is the location and what’s going
on, how long has there been an issue. Knowing the location lets me know length of time to reach a client and knowing ahead of time the issue, will help me to better diagnose the issue on site because I will already have an idea. Also all their contact information.
I have actually told clients that a repair on an old car is not worth it. It would be fine for me to repair it and get paid for the job but in the long run it is not in their best interest
What is your mission as a mechanic? My mission as a mechanic is being able to provide a very professional, high quality service to my customers so they know that my service is worthwhile. It also helps get word of mouth out to other potential customers. I have never had a bad review and I hope this continues to be true. What is your mission as a mobile mechanic? My mission as the mobile mechanic is to be able to assist anyone on site, at their house, office, grocery store, out at sea, on a construction site, etc, etc. Did you always know that you wanted to be a mechanic? Yes, I’ve always known I wanted to be a mechanic, because I was always good with my hands and no matter what I was working on I could get it fixed. I’ve never cared for the general, routine school subjects, but hand me a mechanic textbook and I’m all over it. It is my passion.

What would you like to see for your industry in the future? I would like to see my business expand and hope to one day have more vans on the road. This will mean eventually bringing onboard other young talented mechanics. I also am working towards having a garage of my own so I can be mobile as well as have a base for some of the bigger jobs that I am unable to do on site. What does your schedule look like usually? There is always something to do no matter what day of the week it is. There are some slower moments with just a few calls coming through and then other moments I am booked solid and having to organise myself by the minute to meet the needs of everyone. It is very important to be able to maintain a schedule and be very organised to get as much work done as possible. What are the three most important questions that someone should be asking their mechanic? 1. What is your experience level? There are many so called mechanics out there whom I have had to follow and clean up a job they have done. It is best to have a professional handle it to save money and headaches. 2. Have you worked on a similar vehicle before? I believe in honesty. I was asked once to repair a piece of farm equipment. I was upfront that it was not something I had done before but found out that I actually was able to repair it very easily. Being honest with a customer goes a long way, instead of spending hours attempting to fix something and then realising after the customer has spent lots of money, that it cannot be fixed. Mechanics and customers should understand limits. 3. What are my options? It is very important to give the customer all of their options so that they understand costs of labour, parts, etc, and even when you believe that the repair is not worth the money. I have actually told clients that a repair on an old car is not worth it. It would be fine for me to repair it and get

What are your goals for the business? I would like to see my business expand and be the leading mobile business on the island. What would you say to someone who wants to be a mechanic? Keep your head up high, because yes this job isn’t easy and it does become very stressful at times when it is a difficult job, but in the long run it is worth every second.
Thank you to our amazing customers and the community
If you weren’t a mechanic, what would you be doing? I honestly cannot see myself being anything other than a mechanic, but I know I would be working for myself may be in another field, running my own business. Contact details and social media info? Checking Car Fluids by Raymond Hainey
L
iquid engineering is a major contributor to road safety – and can help avoid massive repair bills due to owners skipping basic maintenance, the service manager at a top island car dealer said. Terry Heilbron, of Auto Solutions, warned owners had to keep an eye on the levels of basic liquids like oil, coolant, transmission and brake fluid and windscreen washer fluid in between regular service visits. He added: “All these kind of things should be checked weekly, but a lot of people don’t do that, unfortunately. “They get their cars serviced and think everything is going to be okay. But they should check things like oil, coolant and washer fluid. It’s all about making sure the car is safe to be on the road.” Mr Heilbron said if a car ran out of oil or transmission fluid, the engine or transmission could seize up completely. A lack of brake fluid could lead to a catastrophic failure of the system – and potentially deadly consequences. Mr Heilbron said: “Cars that aren’t serviced regularly, the oil turns into gunge – instead of being free-running and that can cause huge damage. “We have four cars at the moment that are sludged up, and that will be a minimum of $2500 in repair bills each. “That’s just through a lack of maintenance – it’s really important for people to understand the importance of regular maintenance.” He told car owners: “It’s really important to keep on top of your car, to get it serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and to get the oil and oil filter changed on a regular basis.” Mr Heilbron said a failure to keep radiator coolant topped up could also cause major damage. He explained the circulation of water and coolant kept the engine at

Mr Heilbron said: “If the coolant is allowed to get low or if there is a leak in the system where water runs out, and the engine gets too hot, the engine could seize up.” He added: “People keep their cars longer in Bermuda than in many places, so it’s even more important to look after them.” n

hile cleaning your car has aesthetic benefits, there are also lasting benefits to keeping your vehicle in tip-top shape. Many mechanics will suggest cleaning your car on a regular basis for maintenance and giving you a longer lasting car. And that goes for both the interior and exterior of your vehicle. But not all cleaning is made equal, so we’ve got some tips below for getting the best clean for a car that will last. Choose the right products It’s important to select products that are made for cleaning your car’s exterior (see sidebar for our top picks). Using household cleaners such as hand soap, dishwashing detergent or household glass cleaner can strip off your car’s wax. Most car-specific products have guidelines for how to use the product, so make sure to read the label. Rinse your car Before adding any products to your car, make sure to give the whole car a good rinse. This will remove loose contaminants such as dust, dirt, mud and any larger pieces of dirt. Once you’ve given the car a good rinse, you can add soap. Suds should be applied with a large, soft, natural sponge or mitt. Make sure you use

a separate sponge to clean the wheels and tires, which may be coated with sand, brake dust, and other debris that could mark your car’s clear coat. That last thing you want to do is wash the car with dirty water, which only reintroduces those same contaminants you’re trying to remove. Take the time to dry After the initial rinse, work methodically, washing and rinsing the soap off one section at a time, top to bottom. Use a separate bucket to clean your sponge to prevent dirt from getting mixed into the sudsy wash water. Air drying can potentially leave streak marks. It takes an extra five minutes to use a chamois (natural or synthetic) or soft terry towels to blot the water. Don’t forget the windows and wheels The windows are another important part of the car where it’s essential to use the right products. Look for a specific car window cleaner that will help get that streak-free shine. Specific products for cleaning your wheels will also help to maintain the look and performance of your car. n

Chevrolet Trax
by Ian Hind
T
he Chevrolet Trax is yet another sub-compact crossover SUV, in what is now a crowded field, giving the customer lots of choices; which is never a bad thing. It is six years since it was first introduced, though it received an extensive makeover in 2017. New features include halogen projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, dual tail lights and a new grille design. The interior was also redesigned with a new dashboard and centre console. Three trim levels are available globally, namely, LS, LT and LTZ. Bermuda gets the LT and the 1.4 litre turbocharged gas engine. As manufacturers struggle globally to meet ever-demanding emissions standards, and improved fuel consumption without loss of performance, the move is to smaller turbocharged engines. In foreign markets, the Trax is offered with a 1.6 litre and 1.8 litre gasoline engine, and a 1.7 litre diesel, there are no 2.0+ litre engine options. The 1.4 turbo produces 138hp at 4900rpm via 6-speed automatic gearbox which is more than enough to give a sporty performance on Bermuda’s roads. Its popularity is secured with a total of over 250 sold. It is also a stalwart of the Bermuda Police Service with ten in their fleet. That popularity is understandable when you realise what you are getting for your bucks. It’s an attractive looking car, with signature crossover SUV design features such as the curving roofline, rear raised haunch above the rear wheels, high waistline, and on the LT, roof-mounted side rails. The colours available include white, black, pearl white, velvet red, dark grey, silver and the very popular seeker blue. Although the test drive was invariably short, the ride was comfortable aided no doubt by the ‘StabiliTrack’ traction control system, and the drive was pleasant with the instrument panel clearly visible, and controls, knobs and switches in easy reach. Years ago, there was a noticeable difference between low cost ‘budget’ cars and the more expensive premium models. Now, the gap has closed so that the build quality, trim levels, reliability, cabin ergonomics, and engine performance is often on a par. This trend is very noticeable in the cabin controls, the instrument panel and connectivity. Analogue instrumentation is long gone. The centrepiece for most cars is now an information touch panel screen. The Trax has a 7” diagonal touchscreen with phone integration and is configured for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Steering wheel mounted controls means everything is easily within reach. The rear-view camera fills the screen, and, in fact, you can actually see the top edge of the rear bumper, so you know exactly where you are.

Wide doors lend to the roomy cabin, with full A/C and air filtration system, a good driving position and a decent sized boot at 18.70 cub.ft. with rear seats upright and 48.5 cub.ft. with the rear seats folded down. A retractable cargo shade is an interesting and useful feature. The front bucket seats are very comfortable providing good leg support; hence my sciatica did not play up – always a good sign. The rear, as well as the front passenger’s seats have sun visors. Other useful features include Forward Collision Alert, an audio system with six speakers, ten airbags, a 110Volt outlet, a tilted and telescopic steering wheel, power folding mirrors, Bluetooth, USB port and there is all sort of storage spaces and cubby holes that would keep any tidy nut happy. At $36,500 this G-Class package represents excellent value for money. Through to the end of May, there is a $1,380 discount, which is the cost of the TCD licence. For more information and to book a test drive, contact Rayclan Chevrolet on 292 3891 or go to the showroom at 4 Addendum Lane South, Pembroke. n

Twizy, Tazzari and the Anaig
by Ian Hind
F
or decades tourists have had to rely on 50cc scooters for independent personal transport. Thousands of them are hired every year and, unfortunately, there have been accidents, very occasionally fatal, as inexperienced riders negotiated Bermuda’s unfamiliar roads. Over the years various attempts have been made to introduce a suitable 4-wheeled vehicle alternative, often based on golf cart technology and design. The mould on the restriction of car hire in Bermuda was broken when Current Vehicles introduced the Renault Twizy to the rental market in May of 2017. This all-electric, narrow, 4-wheeled, 2-seater vehicle sits the passenger directly behind the driver with the steering wheel right in the middle. The controls are straightforward making it an easy drive and park. ten were brought in to coincide with the America’s Cup event being held
in June of that year. This was followed by a further 70 vehicles. Hire company Bermuda Rental Car has been in the market since 1964, as Oleander Cycles, with the ubiquitous 2-seater, 50 cc scooter, and introduced the Italian made Tazzari Zero Junior, and Taiwan-built Anaig Quick to the rental market in September 2018. They currently have ten Tazzari, with ten more due for delivery in June, and 20 Anaig with 30 more due, also in June. continued on page 36

BIKE
The future is here – and it’s whisper quiet by Raymond Hainey
W
orld Distributors has brought in a fourstrong range of electric scooters and motorbikes – and the loudest noise you hear on the road is the air whistling by and a faint hum from the tyres. It’s like riding a bicycle but without the need to pedal. I tested two, the 50cc equivalent Vmoto CUX, with a 1300-watt engine and the Ecooter E1R, where the 4200-watt motor is equivalent to a 125cc gas engine. The smaller CUX coped well on the flat with smooth and fast power output from a standing
start. There was a bit of a lag on steeper hills, but no worse than the equivalent gas engine. The bigger Ecooter, however, showed no signs of flagging over the same route and, although I kept it at safe speeds, you could feel the reserve on tap if ever needed. The hi-tech digital displays show battery charge reserves, and speed. Some of the models even offer a sportier mode and an energy-saving option, which is ideal for around town and other built-up areas – which is almost everywhere in Bermuda. Eugene Bothello, president of World Distributors, based in Hamilton’s North Road near the Transport Control Department, said the new machines had already sparked interest. He added: “We’ve got four models at the moment and a couple of other ones that should be here later in the year. “We’ve sold between twelve and fifteen of them already. The interest is out there.”

As the technology gets better and better, the price will come down even more.
Mr Bothello said that Bermuda’s small size made it ideal for electric scooters because of the low mileage involved. And he added: “As the technology gets better and better, the price will come down even more.” All the bikes’ motors carry a one-year warranty and, depending on use, are expected to last up to nine years. Mr Bothello said: “I don’t know what the future is going to hold or what legislation will come into force on internal combustion engines in Bermuda, but electric right now is certainly a viable option.” The range features the Vmoto Emax, a 4200w 125cc equivalent, the Vmoto TS, a 1200w 50cc equivalent, the Vmoto CUX and the Ecooter E1R. Prices range from $2,695 to $3,795. n

CAR REVIEW \ BDA CAR RENTAL
CAR
continued from page 27
The major difference between these two is in the cabin layout. The Anaig Quick has the passenger behind the driver, like the Twizy, whereas in the Tazzari, they sit side by side. A significant improvement over the scooter for the customer is that these cars are completely, or almost completely enclosed, thus keeping the occupants dry in our inclement weather. And with no internal combustion engine, no noxious fumes! The Twizy is even air-conditioned. Of course, with their compact size comes the issue of cabin space. It’s tight in there, especially for the larger framed among us, so the new alternatives are not going to be suitable for everyone. Otherwise, they are fun to drive, nimble and quick with steering response akin to a go-kart. A benefit of being an electric vehicle is immediate throttle response. As you are sitting low to the ground, there is a sense of speed, though you are not necessarily going fast. Top speed is around 48kph. The range of these cars is around 55 miles with the island 22 or so miles long. Charging stations are provided up and down the island in key locations. For Tazzari and Anaig customers, they are at Dockyard, and the Cambridge Beaches, Pompano Beach Club, The Reefs, Newstead and Grotto Bay hotels as well as their outlets in Valley Road, Paget and Gorham Road, Pembroke.

I’m sure that over time these brightly painted cars are going to become a popular feature of our landscape. Twizy drivers can charge at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, Fairmont Southampton, Rosewood, Coral Beach Club, Royal Palms, Rosemont Guest Suites, Pompano Beach Club and The Loren at Pink Beach hotels, plus the Mid Ocean Club and the Inverurie Executive Suites. That is an extensive network that should prevent any observant driver from running out of juice! Our island is noted for its colourful buildings, flora, fauna and beaches. I’m sure that over time these brightly painted cars are going to become a popular feature of our landscape. n

BOAT
Bermuda by Boat
C
ars and scooters get most of us around Bermuda quite nicely, but they can’t take us everywhere. RG Motor Express takes us on a water-borne tour.
For Matiss Randel, the attraction of the ‘Famous Homes and Hideaways’ tour that he and shipmates Jamie Zuill and Mark Roberts operate is straight-forward. “We show people the places that the taxi drivers can’t show them,” says Mr Randel, now in his sixth season assisting Captain Zuill and Mr Roberts, the co-owners of 52-foot tour boat Excellence.

Leaving Royal Naval Dockyard, the twohour tour takes in Spanish Point, Fairylands and Point Shares from the water, slips past Agar’s Island, enters Soncy Bay and then hugs the shoreline of Harbour Road, before moving into the Great Sound, and then back to Dockyard. En route, the crew give passengers a history lesson that includes privateering, wartime
by Duncan Hall
munitions storage, the origins of the Fairmont Hamilton hotel, America’s Cup, historical Bermuda homes – and, of course, a glimpse from the water of the Warwick home of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. “Everyone is interested in Michael Douglas’s house,” says 25-year-old Mr Randel. “We also see lots of turtles along the way, maybe every 20 minutes throughout the tour.” His favourite spot, Mr Randel says, is the shoreline of Fairylands and Point Shares. “That’s where the most expensive homes are, the $5 million and $10 million homes that you can’t see from a taxi.” For Georgie Bowie, a move to Hinson’s Island was 20 years in the making.
BOAT
We show people places that the taxi drivers can’t show them
The 28-acre, pedestrian-only island has a residential community of 25 houses. There are no cars, no scooters, no street lights – and a community that must travel by private boat or on the Paget ‘pink route’ ferry to reach Hamilton. Initially reluctant to leave mainland Bermuda, Ms Bowie says husband Steve is now a convert. The couple live on Hinson’s with Charlotte, 17, and 15-year-old Harriett. “Steve is more in love with the lifestyle than he could have imagined,” Ms Bowie says. “Having loaded up a barge with our furniture and chickens 18 months ago, we have no regrets. “Steve, after his recent annual physical was
given a great compliment by his doctor, who said he was fitter than ever. He puts that down to his Hinson’s lifestyle. You don’t walk five feet to your car or bike if you live here.” Living on Hinson’s does have its challenges, of course. “You learn to adapt, you buy in bulk, and if you don’t have that ingredient for dinner you go without but living here is only ever a fiveminute boat ride to the supermarket,” she says. “The trash goes on and off by hand,” Ms Bowie adds. “A wheelbarrow becomes a good friend to move your shopping and trash to and from the ferry.” Even living on Hinson’s, some habits endure, she says. “We still have our Sunday night take
out tradition from the House of India.” Meanwhile, back in the West End, a keen Comet sailor at West End Sailboat Club waxed lyrical about the races between sailors from his club and East End Mini Yacht Club and MidAtlantic Boat & Sports Club -- but preferred to keep a low profile. We will call him ‘Mr Comet’. He said his favourite offshore spots are Challenger and Argus Banks, which are located southwest of Bermuda. “I used to fish out on the Banks – that’s a place you can’t go without a boat,” said the mystery man. “I fished for sport every weekend – plus it provided food.” Just try and do that from a car or scooter! n

BOAT
It is not uncommon for vessels to break free from their moorings during rough weather and cause damage in the process.
Protect your investment
F
or most owners, a boat is a luxury item providing the opportunity to enhance their lifestyle with sailing, fishing, water skiing, diving or just simply relaxing and enjoying an ice-cold beverage. At Argus, we can help protect that quality of life with marine insurance and here we share why you should always insure.
Your Investment Owning a marine craft is always a costly venture. That’s why you should protect your investment by purchasing comprehensive marine insurance. It will cover you for claims arising from accidental damage, sinking, theft, fire and vandalism. In addition, you can add Liability Cover to further protect your investment. Liability Cover Unlike motor insurance, there is no legal requirement to carry liability insurance for ma rine vessels. However, venturing out without this most basic form of cover is ill-advised as
42
MAY 2019
RG MOTOR
you won’t receive protection from legal liability. It can also be taken out separately to protect you from any third-party claims made against you. Marina Requirements Most marinas with walk-on berths require a minimum third-party liability cover in their rental contracts. Be sure you abide by the rules and fulfil your obligations by obtaining appropriate coverage. Loan Protection If you have taken out a personal loan to finance your new craft, your lending institution will
likely require you to obtain a comprehensive marine policy for the full value of the vessel. The lending institution’s interest will be noted on the policy, and you will both be protected in the event of a loss. Unforeseen Events No matter how attentive and prepared you are, there always exists the risk that something may happen to your boat. It is not uncommon for vessels to break free from their moorings during rough weather and cause damage in the process.
