Celebrating You 2018 Gratitude Report

THANK YOU! Behind every life changed is someone like YOU— a donor, a grantor, a volunteer. That’s why we’re celebrating YOU and the impact of your generosity in 2018. YOU helped individuals and families achieve wellbeing and their life’s potential. YOU provided the financial spark to ignite the life-changing power of counseling and education. YOU provided the time and talent to help build students’ academic skills and confidence. Because YOU cared, clients accessed the support services they needed at minimal or no cost. YOU are at the heart of everything we do! OUR MISSION We strengthen families through counseling, education, and related support services. We help individuals succeed in school, at work, in relationships, and within our community.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS YOUTH THRIVE THROUGH COUNSELING Joseph, age 14, sought counseling because he was missing school and often crying. Working with our youth therapist, he shared that he struggled with anxiety about school, conflicts with his parents, and questions about his sexual orientation. Joseph and our youth therapist identified what triggered his anxiety so he could get the support he needed. He processed his fear of failure and the pressure from his family to get good grades, He learned coping skills and relaxation techniques to help with panic and anxiety. Therapy provided him a safe space to explore his sexual orientation and all aspects of his identity, He was connected with a supportive community of LGBTQ peers as well. Joseph began attending school consistently, and his mood began to improve. As therapy continued, Joseph became more confident. He began to open up about his sexual orientation to trusted school friends and family members. He continued using his coping skills when feeling anxious. When he felt ready, his family joined therapy. Together they improved communication, and Joseph’s parents came to understand his struggles and how to support him.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS ADULTS IMPROVE WELLBEING THROUGH COUNSELING Joan retired from business to care for her ill, elderly mother. Within a month of her mother’s death, Joan’s husband Ed was tragically killed in an accident. Joan was in shock and felt alone. While prepared for her mother’s death, she had no way to prepare for her husband’s passing. Joan had looked forward to enjoying retirement with Ed. Now that dream was shattered. At the suggestion of a friend, Joan called to make an appointment to begin counseling. Working with one of our therapists, Joan processed sadness and the shock of her losses. As Joan and our therapist talked, Joan recognized the network of family and friends she had for support. She also remembered interests she had abandoned for lack of time. Our therapist encouraged her to pursue her interest in art, and Joan soon joined a class that interested her. She also said that she might want have a dog again for companionship. Counseling helped Joan express herself, share fond memories, and become more comfortable sharing her sadness with family. Life does not always work out as planned. Joan found that talking things out with our therapist helped her move forward and not be stuck in grief.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS CAREGIVERS COPE WITH CAREGIVING CHALLENGES Clara sought counseling for emotional support as a caregiver to her husband, who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. She was overwhelmed with caring for her husband, trying to manage their home, finances and her own medical issues. She said that their adult children did not accept her concerns about their father’s decline. Clara shared her frustration in a caregiver support group, and found support from other members experiencing similar feelings. When working with our therapist, Clara’s hearing and eye problems made discussions difficult. Our therapist learned that the Lion's Club of Illinois helps older adults with hearing aides and eye glasses. She helped Clara submit an application. Clara recently received new glasses and a hearing aide. Both greatly enhance her ability to utilize support, and also benefit her daily life. While Clara still struggles with caring for her husband, her ability to make telephone calls, hear others clearly, and receive feedback, are greatly enhanced and help relieve some of her stress. Our therapist continues to work with Clara to offer support and resources, as well as to help make Clara’s life less challenging.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS LATINO STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT Luis, a 4th grader from a first-generation Latino immigrant family, was way behind in math. He started the school year at Nuestro Center’s Homework Club struggling to complete his math homework. Our staff and his tutor patiently tried to help. However, it was clear that Luis needed more one-on-one help in math. Luis’s school teacher understood his problem. She recommended that he attend the new Academic Enrichment Program (AEP). Our staff described this opportunity to Luis’s parents and recommended that they allow him to join AEP. They agreed enthusiastically. There was room in the program for Luis to join the morning session of AEP, which meant he also could continue to attend Homework Club in the afternoon. By doubling up on math instruction and tutoring, Luis improved his math skills quickly. In fact, he went from not knowing basic math to understanding multiplication and word problems in a few weeks. He also gained confidence and fluency in English, and he began writing wonderful stories in his daily Homework Club journal. Luis is on the way to obtaining strong math and English skills for a successful transition to middle school.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS LATINO STUDENTS BUILD PLANS FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS Ernesto, a 12-year old Latino Highwood resident, returned to our middle school program in January because his parents were worried about his grades and failure to do his homework. Ernesto's GPA had dropped from 3.25 while in our program to 2.75 after foregoing our support. Ernesto said he wanted to return because his grades were declining, which he knew upset his parents. He said his homework was also an issue. To help Ernesto achieve academic success, our staff developed a plan with him. To help him stay focused, he was assigned a seat in class where he would be unable to talk with friends during homework hour. He learned how to ask for help with his homework from our staff and his teachers,. He also agreed to meet frequently with our staff so they could track and encourage his academic progress. With a plan to focus on homework, attend our program regularly, and know when to ask for help, Ernesto had tools to improve his academic success. His behavior also changed. He became more motivated to succeed and involved in the program. By the end of the school year, Ernesto’s GPA was up to 3.08.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS LATINO STUDENTS WITH CARING, TRUSTED MENTORING Angela, a high school sophomore, joined our program as a first-grade Nuestro Center Homework Club student. She finished our middle school program and now is in our high school program. Angela always has been shy, but last year our staff knew that she wasn’t happy. She also was very reserved with her peers. This behavior continued as the school year progressed. During weekly check-ins our staff talked with Angela about how things were at home and at school. She shared that she had distanced herself from her freshman-year friends, because they were not a good influence on her. Staff continued to talk with Angela each program day. They encouraged her to speak up during programming. As time went on, Angela opened up more and seemed to enjoy herself. During check-ins, staff noticed how much Angela was changing. She looked for our staff at high school Homework Club. She said she wanted to be part of the program, not just an observer. Angela’s change is wonderful to see, She is still growing her voice and feeling empowered. She smiles a lot. She feels comfortable sharing when she is troubled. Angela knows that she has found people who care and want her to succeed.
