Why Outdoor? And Why Resident Camp? The Value of the Camp Pathway for Girl Scouts The value of an outdoor experience in a girl's life is beyond measure. It is a time for creating memories that will last a lifetime, and it has been an important component of the Girl Scout experience since the beginning of the organization. The Camp Pathway provides a setting for girls to stretch their minds and muscles, appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of the world in which they live, exercise leadership and learn a wide variety of new skills. They are also challenged as individuals and as groups working toward a common goal. Camp Pathway progression is designed to build with the girl's skills and experience, and to give her the opportunity to grow individually as well as to work within a group in an outdoor environment. Day Camp is designed primarily for girls in 1st-5th grades. It is a time for a girl to develop camping skills, become confident and secure in her abilities as a camper, and to learn to work together and enjoy the outdoors. Resident Camp is the next step in the Camp Pathway progression. Girls as young as 1st grade may be ready for Resident Camp, while others may not. But by the time a girl is in 4th to 5th grade she should be responsible enough for herself, and confident enough to take the next step to resident camp alone or with a friend. Girls grow in self-confidence, independence and leadership, learn new skills and interests, comradeship, and the ability to make good decisions. Staff members are involved and available to assist girls when they need help but are able to step back and let girls accomplish goals and triumphs for themselves. Troop Camp is a special time for troops to camp and work together as a small community drawing on each individual's strengths. The girls should plan and implement the camping trip with the support of their leaders to have a bonding and memorable experience. The Camp Pathway offers many opportunities for girls to live in a community of caring adult staff members and volunteers who nurture girls in an outdoor environment. They develop lifetime friendships; they live and participate in a community that recognizes differences; they discover the value of being in a safe, supportive environment. The outdoors and camping offer not only adventure and challenge – but they are FUN! They also present a perfect setting in which to emphasize many of our 15 outcomes: Discover – Girls develop a strong sense of self, gain practical and healthy life skills and strengthen their values. Connect – Girls form caring relationships, promote cooperation and team building and embrace diversity. Take Action – Girls feel empowered to make a difference, identify and solve problems they care about, and advocate for themselves and others.

General Parent Camp Information Types of Camps

Day Camp

Grow, explore and have fun at Day Camp. Day Camp is primarily for girls in grades 1-5 who are not quite ready for the Resident Camp experience. Girls enjoy a variety of activities such as hikes, arts & crafts, singing and games at these council-sponsored camps conducted during the daylight hours. A one night overnight is usually offered for girls who want to try the overnight experience.

Resident Camp

Troop Core Camp

All girls can register for Girl Scout Resident Camp and may even bring a friend. Each summer, these overnight camping experiences offer a wide variety of activities. Staff and volunteers provide 24-hour supervision, prepare well-balanced meals and conduct specialized activities like horseback riding, high ropes, swimming and boating.

During the summer, girls or groups, along with their adult chaperones, can participate in camp programs designed by GSK staff. The CORE Camp experience provides well-balanced meals, project supplies and experienced instructors. It's perfect for anyone who wants to camp but doesn't have the experience or training in specialized activities.

Experience the fun and adventure of summer Resident Camp!

Who Are the Camp Staff?

Our staff members are mature, responsible individuals selected for their special abilities, certifications, professionalism, and experience working with youth camping programs. All of our resident camp staff members are interviewed and screened. Background checks are conducted on all staff members. All staff participate in an intensive pre-camp training and ongoing trainings throughout the summer on topics such as child and adolescent development, camp skills, Girl Scout programs, healthcare, First Aid and CPR training, and safety practices and procedures. Most counselors are college students or recent college graduates with experience working in schools, childcare centers, or the recreation field. We provide program specialists for lifeguards, horseback riding, arts & crafts, archery, low and high ropes, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and other adventure program areas.

Health & Safety

Your camper's health/safety is our first priority. All camp programs are planned and staffed according to the high standards of Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Healthcare managers direct the health centers at each camp and are supported by on-call services of a local physician and emergency medical center. If a camper is on medication, the healthcare manager will administer and document it. Girls must turn in all medication (in the original container) to the healthcare manager upon arrival at camp.

Enjoy the fun, friendship and adventure of CORE Camp!

Meals, Allergies, Food & Special Requirements

Our camps provide well-balanced meals prepared by experienced kitchen staff and served in the dining hall facility. Menus are planned based on the summer food service program guidelines (the same guidelines used in most school cafeterias). Meals are normally served "family style" and girls will participate in setup before and cleanup after each meal. It is very import that we are aware of any special dietary needs, requirements or allergies BEFORE your child arrives at camp. Please list any severe allergies on your registration form. This will not affect your camper's placement but is meant only to help better serve your child's specific needs. If your child requires specialized foods please contact the Camp Pathway Coordinator, Dana Young, to discuss the best way to accommodate your child's dietary needs.

Visitors & Phone Calls

For safety reasons, access to Girl Scout camp properties is limited when camp is in session. Mail from home is welcome and delivered daily. Parents can leave mail at the check-in for delivery during the session to eliminate concerns over the timeliness of postal deliveries. In the event of a home emergency or change in pick-up plans, please call the camp director. Camp phone numbers will be provided in your confirmation materials. Camp directors will contact parents in case of emergency or illness.

Health histories are required for all programs. Physical exams are required for programs lasting more than two nights. Once a girl registers, she will receive the proper health form and instructions in her confirmation packet. So that we can provide the best possible experience for your camper, please note any special needs, disabilities or dietary restrictions on her registration form under "special needs". This helps us to establish appropriate staffing and any additional accommodations that a camper may require.

Where will my child sleep?

Parents/guardians will be contacted by phone if sickness or injury requires a visit to a doctor, or for any other issue, such as severe homesickness, injury, or illness that prevents your child from taking part in camp program activities.

Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana reserves the right to cancel any program or program activity when weather conditions are unsuitable – including extreme heat, thunderstorms, etc. Refunds are not given when activities are cancelled as a result of "Acts of God".

6

Campers usually sleep in platform tent or cabin units. Each unit has 4-7 tents with raised wooden floors or cabins. Each unit has a covered shelter and washhouse. If you come to Troop Core Camp or with a female adult you will be placed together. Paddle Pals will have separate sleeping units for girls and adult male companions. Staff is located within each unit.

Program Disclaimer

e

Registration

• Registration begins on February 15, 2013. • Registration forms are processed in the order in which they are received. • To hold your camper’s space a $50 registration payment must be made with all registration forms. This is part of your registration fee and is not an additional fee. • For any program that has more registrations than spaces, a draw will be conducted for placement in this program. • If we are unable to place your camper, the $50 registration payment will be refunded. Given that our council covers such a broad mailing area, we have found this method to be the fairest process for the girls. Camp confirmations will be mailed or emailed once placement is made.

Waiting List

• After a program is filled to capacity, a waiting list is started. • If a girl is placed on a waiting list, she will be notified by telephone, email, or postal mail. • Girls can choose to remain on the waiting list or switch to a different session. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that girls on the waiting list will get into that unit.

After Registration

Once your camper is placed in a program: • A Confirmation Notice with payment information will be mailed or emailed to you. • Your confirmation letter will let you know when your next payment is due. Payments can be made in two additional installments. • All summer camp fees must be paid in full by April 15th. The only exception for this would be if you are using Cookie Dough. Cookie Dough earned by selling Girl Scout Cookies may be used to pay off the balance of camp and bus fees. • Failure to pay the fee in a timely manner will result in the removal of your camper from that program until payment is made. • No one will be allowed to attend camp without payment in full before their session begins. A camper packet will be mailed or emailed in the spring with information on arrival and departure, packing list, health card, bus information, directions to camp, etc. If there is a problem with your registration, you will be notified by phone, mail, or email.

Cookie Dough/Pathway Passes

• Cookie Dough/Pathway Passes earned by selling Girl Scout Cookies or other products may be used for registration payments or to pay off the balance of camp/bus fees. • Enter the amount of Cookie Dough you will be using so a note can be made on your account. • Cookie Dough cannot be used at the camp Trading Post or submitted for a cash refund.

Refund Policy

The camp fee, less the $50 registration payment, will be refunded on a pro-rated basis only if one or more of the following circumstances apply: • The family has moved out of the area. • There is a doctor’s statement, or there has been a family emergency (death, hospitalization, etc). • The camper is sent home early from camp due to illness. No refund will be issued if a camper is sent home due to unacceptable behavior (see Code of Conduct in the camper packet), homesickness, head lice, or if the camper is a "no show" for the program.

Registering with a Buddy/Friend

Girls who want to be registered as buddies in the same unit must list this on their registration form. To become listed as buddies, BOTH campers must note this on their registration form. Buddy placement is not guaranteed.

Scholarship/Financial Aid

Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is committed to providing a positive experience to every girl who wants to be a Girl Scout. Scholarship/ Financial Aid (FA) is provided so that a family’s economic status will not be a barrier to participation. Eligibility: • FA will be provided as determined by the council’s budgetary resources and will be based on financial need. • You must be a registered Girl Scout in order to receive FA. • FA is available for one camp session per troop year. A camper must be a registered Girl Scout in order to receive FA. • You must submit an FA Request Form in order to be considered for Financial Assistance. Application Process • To apply, a parent or guardian must complete a separate FA request for each girl. Complete all sections. • Attach the scholarship/financial aid form to your registration form.

Multiple Sessions

There is no limit to the number of sessions each girl may attend. (Financial Assistance will be available for only one session.)

Transportation/Bus Fees

An environmentally-friendly alternative to driving to camp is riding the bus! The bus is convenient and lots of fun. On the way to and from camp, girls can sing songs, watch movies, and meet new friends. • Our buses are air-conditioned motor coaches, leased from an established bus company with an excellent safety record. • We provide staff members on the bus to monitor campers and ensure that everyone is safe. • Bus stops are in Louisville, Elizabethtown, and Beaver Dam. • Buses will be offered for all sessions except: Day Camps, Just the Two of Us, Island Girls, Paddle Pals, Daisy Overnight and Troop Core Camps. Bus service is provided for an additional fee. You must register for the bus. • Camp Pennyroyal: $70 round trip/$40 one way • Bear Creek: $90 round trip/$50 one way • CIT and ACIT Bus Fee: $90 round trip to both camps
