FULL-TIME PATHWAYS AND APPRENTICESHIPS GUIDE 2020-21

WELCOME FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE Welcome to Activate Learning! I’m delighted that you are thinking about one of our colleges to continue your educational journey. I recognise what a big decision this is for you, however, I feel once you see the amazing opportunities we offer our students and discover how we will work with you the choice will become more apparent—we help you understand your chosen career pathway and also how you learn best. We recognise every student has a different story; people come to college having had different experiences. We want to capitalise on these and help you grow by building effective relationships with you all. Activate Learning’s approach is to work with you to understand how your experiences have shaped your approach to learning, as we know that how you feel about learning is just as important as what you learn. We will combine our expertise in delivering technical, vocational and academic education, with our high level of industry engagement and connections to some of the best-known companies—not just in our region, but in the world—to provide you with a complete educational experience where you feel supported and confident in your abilities and inspired by the opportunities available to you. Coming to an Activate Learning college is not an easy option. We will inspire you to challenge yourself. We believe that success comes from effort and hard work. The more you study, the cleverer you become. There are no shortcuts. However, in doing so, we hope to instil in you a purpose and a drive to succeed and grow, while all the time preparing you for the next step. We believe it’s our responsibility to work alongside you to prepare you for life outside our college walls, whether that’s higher education or industry.

This is why we place such an emphasis on working with different industries; we work in collaboration with them to help you develop the core behaviours that both universities and workplaces value. In this guide, you will discover a variety of career pathway options that are available to you at Activate Learning. Together, we can plan out a route to your goals that best suits you; whether you want to learn within a college-based study programme or a work-based apprenticeship. We hope you will be inspired by some of the personal stories within this guide, which will give you a feel for what it is really like to be part of an Activate Learning college. Better still, come along to one of our Open Events and talk to us about your plans. We would be delighted to help! I look forward to seeing you soon.

OUR LEARNING PHILOSOPHY Our award-winning Learning Philosophy is at the heart of our approach to teaching and learning. We utilise the important relationship between the following elements:

BRAIN Our brains are capable of incredible things. From the study of neuroscience, we understand that the brain connects neurons to make networks. These networks strengthen and work faster through repeated use. Your brain is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets! We believe in hard work and recognise the value in working through our failures so that we are constantly learning and improving.

MOTIVATION We need to motivate ourselves in order to do the practice that strengthens the networks in our brains. By repeatedly demonstrating the relevance and impact of newly learnt skills and knowledge, we maintain our students’ motivation.

EMOTIONS Our emotional response to studying has a massive influence on how we learn. The more positive your emotional response to studying is, the more likely you are to engage with and remember what you’re learning.

ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS

ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS At Activate Learning, we work closely with employers to identify the characteristics and skills they are looking for in potential employees. We help you identify which of these desirable attributes you have and which you can strengthen throughout your programme, ensuring your future employability is the focus throughout your studies.

We help you to develop your people skills. You will become a master in communication and customer service.

We encourage positive risk-taking alongside creative problem-solving. This boosts your leadership skills and resourcefulness.

We teach you how to adapt to changing situations and persevere to reach your goals, giving you the best chance to thrive and succeed.

We build your confidence and prepare you for the workplace. You’ll present your real self to employers: a motivated, proactive and inquisitive individual.

We help you to develop a reflective attitude towards yourself. That way, you’ll always play to your strengths and be able to work on your weaknesses.

FULL-TIME PROGRAMMES AND APPRENTICESHIPS GUIDE 2020-21

YOUR CAREER ROUTES With Activate Learning, you have two routes to choose from for career success: full-time study programmes or apprenticeships. FULL-TIME STUDY PROGRAMME

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME

If you are looking to join us for full-time study at one of our campuses, you can expect a career-focused and innovative educational programme. The skills and knowledge you acquire during your studies with us will ensure you are prepared for your future.

Choosing an apprenticeship allows you to kick-start your career and gain industryspecific qualifications and experience.

Your main qualification

Our tailored qualifications are designed in partnership with employers. Their industry insight and input ensures you are prepared for success.

Work experience

Those studying with us take part in work experience opportunities relevant to their learning programme, ensuring confidence in the workplace.

Industry skills and projects

You will gain invaluable workplace skills while attending industry-expert talks, taking part in employer-led and evaluated projects, and participating in mentoring and enterprise-related activities.

English and Maths GCSEs

If you join us with a grade 3 (D) or below in GCSE English or Maths, our expert teachers will help you with revision sessions to ensure success when you retake these subjects. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to resit your GCSEs for free.

Tutorial

Our tutorial programme is in place to boost your personal development, behaviour and welfare. During your tutorials you will have the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities and improve your CV.

Earn while you learn

Apprenticeships offer a direct route into employment. You develop essential skills and qualifications that prove you have the knowledge and competency to complete the job, whilst earning money at the same time.

Direct links with top employers

Our apprenticeships are run by Activate Apprenticeships; a specialist provider that partners with our colleges to deliver nationally-recognised programmes. We deliver apprenticeships for over 1,000 UK businesses and work with top employers to bring great candidates and careers together.

Clear progression routes

Apprenticeships offer clear progression routes from intermediate (Level 2) and advanced (Level 3), to higher apprenticeships (degree-equivalent qualifications) and directly into the workplace.

How does it work?

As an apprentice, you are employed and paid by the company you work for. You usually spend one or two days a week at college, studying core skills such as English, Maths and IT. Some apprenticeships may be delivered entirely in the workplace and will be monitored by our dedicated assessors routinely. Apprenticeship opportunities are available all year-round and last for a minimum of one year.

LEVELS EXPLAINED Programmes in this guide are arranged according to levels. Levels refer to learning stages, and guide you through our career pathways maps. Level 3 programmes are equivalent to three A Levels, and ensure you have the points required to progress to higher education. HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

A CAREER IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE With an ageing population, at least another one million workers will be required in adult social care by 2025. Skills in the care professions are in short supply, and it’s one of the fastest growing industries in the UK. Working in care is about providing personal and practical support to help people live their lives. There are lots of different roles in health and social care depending on what you want to do, who you want to work with and where you would like to work. You could be supporting someone with a physical disability, autism, dementia or a mental health condition. You could be working in a care home, out in your local community, in a hospital, or even from someone’s home.

96% 96% OF WORKERS IN ADULT SOCIAL CARE SAID THEY FEEL THEIR WORK MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

A CAREER IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

ABOUT THE PATHWAY Our programmes prepare learners to work in a variety of care settings, supporting people of all ages. Our teachers have significant industry experience, so know exactly what it takes. Employment and progression routes for health and social care students are numerous. Our learners go on to work in childcare, teaching, nursing, midwifery, community work, counselling, occupational therapy, criminology, social work, palliative care and care for the elderly, to name just a few.

YOUR PATHWAY, YOUR FUTURE Our students have the opportunity to undertake work experience in NHS settings, such as the Royal Surrey County Hospital. . We expect students to take part in regular work experience placements throughout their programme. We do this because we believe it makes learners more employable, helps to put you ahead of the competition when applying to university, and ultimately makes for a better health and social care professional. We work closely with the NHS in our local areas, as well as with the local authorities, care providers and day care centres. This enables students to experience the full breadth of health and social care and begin to develop expertise in specialist areas.

HOW TO APPLY If your heart is set on a specific programme or apprenticeship, you are probably ready to apply. APPLYING FOR A FULL-TIME STUDY PROGRAMME? For full-time study programmes, please first complete an online application form. This can be done on our website at www.activatelearning.ac.uk. Application forms can be supplied in alternative formats - please speak to a member of the team at any campus or call 0800 612 6008 for more information. Once your application is received, a member of our friendly Advice and Admissions team will invite you in for an informal career pathway interview. At your interview we will complete a career pathway plan with details about your next steps. We will send you confirmation of the outcome of your interview, usually by email, so please check your junk/spam folders. If you have further questions regarding your study programme, please do get in touch. Contact us online at activatelearning.ac.uk/contact/enquiries or call 0800 612 6008.

APPLYING FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP? Please search through our latest vacancies online at www.activateapprenticeships.co.uk. You can also register for alerts as new vacancies arise. Once you find an apprenticeship that interests you, apply online. We will invite you in for an interview to check that the programme is right for you and that you will be able to achieve the qualification. You will also complete an initial assessment for basic literacy and numeracy. You must be employed before you start your apprenticeship, but don’t let that stop you from applying as we will help you in your job search. If you’ve already found an employer, or your current employer wishes to enrol you on an apprenticeship programme, please contact us and we will work with them.

If you have further questions regarding your apprenticeship application, please do get in touch. Contact us online at activateapprenticeships.co.uk/contact or call 01865 551015.

Follow our top tips for completing key sections of your application form:

TOP

APPLICATION

TIPS

Section 1 - About yourself. Please remember to add your emergency contact details. This is very important so that we can contact your parent/ carer (or a designated contact if you are 19+) in the case of an emergency. Section 2 - Your programme choice. Please write your programme title in as much detail as possible. If you are unsure about which programme to choose, tick ‘yes’ to the ‘advice and guidance required’ option and our Activate Careers team will contact you to discuss suitable options. Section 4 - Your future plans. This is the perfect opportunity to sell yourself and tell us why you want to do this programme, how it fits with your career plans, and what you believe you can bring to the college. Section 5 - Extra support for you. We pride ourselves in offering support to succeed for all our students. If you have a disability, medical condition, or learning or language support needs, please tell us as soon as possible; ideally on the application form. This information will be confidential but it will help us plan ahead so the support you need is in place when you join us.

HOW TO APPLY 105

GOT AN INTERVIEW AT ACTIVATE LEARNING? LET’S NAIL IT. Follow our top tips for interview success. After you’ve submitted your application, we will let you know as soon as possible what the next steps are. You will be invited for an informal interview on campus with a member of staff. This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about the programme and for us to get to know you! Depending on your chosen programme, you may be asked to bring to the interview, a portfolio of your work or we will send you a short task to complete beforehand.

If this is the case, we will send a letter or text message to you with all the relevant information. Your interview will last for about 30 minutes to an hour, and will involve some questions about your previous experiences with learning and what you want to do in the future. Here are four tips to help you prepare:

1 2 3 4 RELAX

BE YOURSELF

Aim to arrive 15-20 minutes before the start of your interview. That way, you’ll have some time to sit quietly and gather your thoughts before we begin. Try taking a few deep breaths from your belly. If your body is relaxed, your mind will follow! Also, try and remember during your interview that we are both working towards the same goal: to get you on an Activate Learning programme! Our job is solely to make sure that the programme you have applied to is the right one for you. If it’s not, we’ll point you in the right direction.

It’s your responsibility to make sure we’re right for you. Do a little digging about our Learning Philosophy (p.4), our Learner Attributes (p.5) and the programme you want to apply for. Write down any questions you want to ask about the programme, Activate Learning or the campus and bring them into the interview with you. Make a note of our answers. It’s important that you want to study with us, so help us put you at ease!

PREPARE QUESTIONS

PRESENT YOURSELF

Having a few questions prepped shows your dedication and suitability to your chosen career pathway. Talk about your aspirations, ask about campus life, and question your interviewer on how to reach your goals.

If you’re not used to wearing smart clothes; if you feel uncomfortable in a suit or dress, don’t worry. Keep your clothes simple and clean. It’s more important that you feel like yourself and comfortable to chat with us. Do pay attention to your posture though and the volume of your voice; speak up and be confident. We’re here to listen!

CAREER PATHWAYS What’s the difference between a programme and a pathway?

Programmes

Pathways

Programmes, also known as courses, are what your child will study at different levels of their education. Dependent on the grades, GCSEs are between Levels 1 and 2. A Levels are the equivalent of a Level 3 qualification, a Higher National Certificate is a Level 4 and so on. Qualifications continue on up the scale to Level 8 (a Doctoral degree). For more details, see page 17 or visit: www.gov.uk/what-different-qualification-levels-mean

Programmes make up what we call Pathways. A pathway is your guide to the jobs and the salary that your child could achieve with each level of qualification. For example, if your child wants to make a living out of sport, but is unsure about what job they could do in that industry, our pathways show them what programmes they can study at each level of education and what jobs those qualifications could lead to.

We give students a clear view of the qualifications they need to get the job and the salary that they want. This way they can be confident that their programme is relevant to their goal and that keeps them motivated. There’s more info on pages 6-7. Each subject’s pathway page shows the best routes through college, higher education and employment into the most popular industries.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

SUCCESS RATES

Each of our programmes has different entry requirements. See each subject’s Pathway map for details.

More 16-19-year-olds who study with Activate Learning have higher achievements than those studying with similar providers, with an increasing number of our students gaining places at prestigious universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and University College London.

APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships are between one and four year training programmes, which anyone living in England over the age of 16 who isn’t in full-time education can apply for. They usually spend four days a week in employment and one day a week at college working towards a qualification. There are many benefits to being an apprentice including:

earning a salary (currently at least £3.90 an hour) no student loans or debt paid holidays training qualifications learning job and industry-specific skills

In 2018-19, 97.2% of learners who sat their GCSE maths and English exams with us passed, which was up on the previous two years. Almost all of our Access to HE students successfully progressed onto university study in subjects such as adult nursing, furniture design, air transport with commercial pilot training, biochemistry and animation.

LOCATIONS Our campuses offer dedicated, safe learning spaces, industry-standard facilities and the support of industry experienced teachers. Each of our campuses is centrally located in its respective town or city, with convenient transport connections. See pages 8-13 for more details on our campuses or visit our website.

My experience dealing with college has been most positive. Your reminders via email and text messages, timely information and clear instructions as to what happens next, have been brilliant. Also, the support you offer to potential students during the summer holidays far surpasses what other local colleges have offered.” - Parent of student
