Join the fun at the Meals on Wheels Walkathon!
Senior Services of Island County invites you to join us at Greenbank Farm for the second annual Meals on Wheels (MOW) Walkathon from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, May 16. Last year’s walkers said they had a terrific time and would definitely be back to support the program again! This is a win-win event. Our goals are to raise $10,000 for vulnerable seniors to receive a meal each day, bring the island community together, promote a healthy lifestyle, and experience the beauty of Greenbank Farm. The MOW Walkathon is a recreational, non-competitive, off-road walk that gives participants an opportunity to explore Greenbank Farm’s beautiful scenery while supporting Meals on Wheels. We’ll have two trails marked, a 5K (3.2 miles) walk and a one-mile walk. The Meals on Wheels program provides meals to isolated homebound seniors in our community delivered by friendly caring volunteers. Last year volunteers donated over 10,500 hours to the MOW program and drove over 25,000 miles to deliver the meals. Last year 31,274 meals were delivered to our homebound friends and neighbors, who depend on MOW for their meals.
Liz Arnold, Lynae Slinden and Nancy Robert celebrate their fine finish at the 2014 Meals on Wheels Walkathon. Photo by Tara Slinden. In a recent survey 96% of the participants who receive Meals on Wheels said that the meal program helps them to remain at home for as long as they can, 92% feel less isolated because of the connection with the friendly volunteers, and 94% feel that their nutrition intake is better than when they didn’t receive the meals. It’s typically the only meal many particpants eat for the day. This year we’d like to thank Louise
Long, Executive Director of the Amica Seattle Marathon, for her energy, expert advice, and compassionate support in the creation, direction, and development of this event. Please join us in our efforts by saving the date and registering today! (See the registration form on page 2.) All walkers will receive a 2015 MOW Walkathon T-shirt and a bag full of goodies and healthy tips. Hope to see you there!

Health & Wellness Foot care is important
Foot care is one of the best things you can do for your health and wellbeing. Good care of your feet can keep you walking in comfort and keep your shoes fitting as they should. Foot care is for anyone who can no longer bend to reach their toes. Most people find the treatment completely enjoyable, quick, painless, and relaxing. Seated in a comfortable reclining chair, your toenails are cleaned, trimmed, and filed. If you’re bothered by callouses, bunions, or corns that may be causing you discomfort, you can talk with the nurse about ways to treat them. Most clients return every 6 to 10 weeks.

The meditation is best done on an empty stomach.
Music and bells support the process and signal the beginning of each stage. The meditation is done with its specific music, which indicates and energetically supports the different stages.
r Active Meditation — Kundalini
Fridays, April 3-June 26, 6-7 p.m. Cost: $40/$50 per month. Instructor: Denise Perkins Kundalini is not really meditation, it is just preparation. You are preparing your instrument. When it is ready, then you stand in silence. Then meditation starts. Then you are utterly there. You have woken yourself up by jumping, by breathing, by shouting-these are all devices to make you a little more alert than you ordinarily are. Once you are alert, then the waiting. “Waiting is meditation…Waiting with full awareness. And then it comes, it descends on you, it surrounds you, it plays around you, it dances around you, it cleanses you, it purifies you, it transforms you.”

Learn how to live well with chronic conditions Senior Services of Island County (SSIC) sponsors free six-week selfmanagement workshops for those who live with chronic health conditions. The next workshop will be held Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Freeland Library from May 14 to June 8. Living Well workshops have been held recently in Coupeville and Oak Harbor. The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program was developed 20 years ago in the School of Medicine at Stanford University. The nonmedical, interactive workshops are facilitated by trained leaders, and topics covered include relaxation techniques, communicating with family and medical personnel, managing medications, evaluating new treatments, nutrition, and increasing strength and flexibility through appropriate exercise.
“The workshops teach you to manage your condition instead of the condition managing you,” said Nancy Bolin-Romanski, Living Well Program Coordinator for SSIC. “The classes are not medical in nature; instead they focus on teaching skills needed to build patients’ confidence so that they can manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.” Those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, osteoporosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, Crohn’s Disease, high blood pressure or cancer can benefit from the life-enhancing Living Well workshops that are open to all people 18 years and older. For more information about the free Living Well workshops, call 360-321-1600, ext. 23 or 360-9890113.

Time Together Adult Day Services has openings Who comes to adult day programs? There is the person who is aged 65 to 105 whose mind is fairly sharp but whose body is showing some wear, is perhaps a bit fragile in terms of getting around independently, or who simply appreciates the socialization an adult day program provides. His or her life has slowed down considerably and he or she is dependent on a loved one, a caregiver, for support. There is the person who has Parkinson’s, M.S., diabetes, heart disease, or other medical conditions that require different levels of support. There is the person who suffered a stroke or a heart attack and is recovering. There is the person who has dementia of one type or another, including Alzheimer’s. Time Together Adult Day, housed in South Whidbey Center at Bayview provides what many refer to as their “club.” Lives are shared through life stories and reminiscing about the good old days. We bring in music of every genre, looking to the participants to identify their favorites. We find out as much as we can
about a person’s life, their interests, what they have been passionate about in their lives, where they have traveled, about their work life. We look for ways to incorporate a participant’s interests. There are those who have enjoyed crossword puzzles, crafts, golfing, fishing, woodworking, poker or gin or blackjack, and other games and activities and we look for ways to modify them if people are no longer able to engage in a way they once did. Every day we have an exercise program. We do so seated, but we are moving, strengthening and preserving mobility, which decreases the risk of falling. And every day we have activity that provides exercise for the brain, cognitive stimulation, whether by group crossword puzzle, other word puzzles and activities that promote staying engaged and challenged. We are blessed to have this program here on the Island. The participants are elders who have lived rich and productive lives with so much to share.
Time Together Cafés
3rd Saturday every month, 1-3 p.m. April 18, China City Restaurant, Freeland May 16, South Whidbey Center Cafés provide a safe, comfortable and supportive environment for socializing for people who are supported by caregivers. As well as offering a range of fun and engaging activities, cafés give both caregivers and care recipients a chance to share information and advice and talk to others with similar challenges. The Cafés are supported by local volunteers. These regular social groups improve wellbeing and reduce isolation for whole families. New friendships are often formed and people who attend leave the sessions feeling like they have a better quality of life.

We who work and volunteer with the Time Together participants are blessed beyond measure by these amazing, talented, funny, deep, irreverent, engaging individuals who share their lives with us. We are a community that cares deeply for and about each other. We laugh, cry, discuss, disagree, learn new things, explore beliefs and concepts – ridiculous, profound, sublime. We talk, play, sing, dance, enjoy artists and performers who come in to share with us. We do volunteer projects that serve the Island community. Time Together is a two-fold program. We provide an opportunity for meaningful, fun, stimulating socialization for people who would not otherwise be able to have an independent opportunity. And we provide respite for their caregivers. If you know of a caregiver who is needing respite and/or an individual who is isolated and in need of socialization, call Director Hestia Laitala at 360-321-1600, ext 29 or e-mail hestia@islandseniorservices.org. If you have a loved one in another county or state, recommend adult day programs. Adult day programs make it possible for individuals to remain at home and preserve a healthier outlook on life. —Hestia Laitala Adult Day Services Director
A Resource You Can Rely On
Time Together Adult Day Services seeks volunteers Time Together Adult Day Services is thriving. Exuberant voices sharing stories, songs being sung, and much laughter can be heard daily in the Evergreen Room at Bayview Center. If you have four hours to volunteer during the week (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) and would like to support some terrific individuals who have come together to enjoy being with friends, Time Together Adult Day Services will welcome you. Time Together ADS is a social model program that provides people who would otherwise be isolated at home with a primary caregiver to get out independently and be among their peers. At the same time it also provides respite for the caregiver. Some participants have special needs, some just need an arm as they walk to the dining room for lunch. All benefit from the companionship and support volunteers provide. Come spend a day with us to see whether it might be a fit for you. Our hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you decide to become a volunteer, training will be provided. If you are interested, please contact Hestia Laitala, Director at 360-321-1600, ext 29 or hestia@islandseniorservices.org.

The Boys in the Boat –
Whidbey Reads presents local author Daniel James Brown Do you have family members who were affected by the Depression and the consequences of WWII and Hitler’s evil empire? Did you know that the rowing team from the University of Washington rose to triumph in the thirties over east coast Ivy League competitors, British aristocrats, and finally, rose to defeat Hitler’s celebrated athletes in the Olympics of 1936? Please join us on April 15 to learn more about The Boys in the Boat, a fascinating account of hardship, hard
work and successful teamwork during this pivotal time in world history. SnoIsle Library’s Whidbey Reads program presents author Daniel James Brown to relate some highlights of researching and writing this book. The author will make two free presentations on Wednesday, April 15, at 1 p.m. at the South Whidbey High School auditorium, and another presentation that evening at 7 p.m. at the Best Western Conference Center in Oak Harbor.
You can check the book out from the library and attend other related events around the island this spring. There will be a panel discussion with surviving family members from the crew team, a chance to experience rowing, and more. Thank you Essential Baking Company! On behalf of the many seniors who benefit, we thank George De Pasquale and his company for donating to the Senior Meals Program with the bountiful donation of organic, fresh, delicious bread! The bread is absolutely treasured here at the Senior Center. Our seniors feel so special when they are able to eat the delicious, artisan bread, which many could not afford otherwise. It’s truly a treat and very much appreciated! For the most part we provide the delicious bread with the meals we serve in our dining rooms and with the Meals on Wheels deliveries to homebound seniors. We’ve also been making delicious stratas, bread pudding and bread crumbs for breading

oven baked chicken too. Meeting our budget is a challenging task. The Older Americans Act Federal support remains virtually static, while food costs and transportation costs continue to increase, making it harder than ever to provide quality meals and service within our limited budget. Your generosity will be a big help with balancing supply and demand with the funds available. Thank you Essential Baking Company for being such good neighbors to us and especially to the seniors you are helping us serve. 2015 Farmer’s Market Senior Nutrition Program
The Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) began in 2001 and has been a very successful program each year since then. SFMNP is a “Win-Win” program, which benefits both low-income seniors and local farmers – everyone involved has been absolutely delighted with the outcomes. Local farmers sell more produce and seniors who couldn’t otherwise afford it are able to purchase organic, fresh fruits and vegetables as excellent supplementation to a healthy diet. If you are 60 years old or older and your income is at or below $1723 per month for one person or at or below $2333 per month for two people, you are eligible for the program. Each eligible person receives $40 worth of vouchers, which can be taken to participating markets to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. The Senior Farmer’s Market vouchers will arrive in June, but the specific date has not been determined. Vouchers are good through October. Call the South Whidbey Center the first week in June to check on the arrival date and distribution locations and times. (360-321-1600 or 360-678-3373)

Many ways to be a member of SSIC
Membership is the lifeblood of Senior Services of Island County (SSIC). An SSIC membership is a choice to support services and connections that people need as they age. It is a vote for assistance, health, knowledge and fortification as we navigate the vicissitudes of life. And it is a voice for senior advocacy. We offer three levels of membership and each comes with benefits as shown below. If you’re not yet fifty years of age, or just want to be an advocate for aging with dignity and would like to support services offered to seniors, consider becoming a member at any of these levels.
