What’s Happening In Bronte By Councillor Alan Johnston Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Bronte Villager. As we head into summer I'd like to recap recent happenings at the Town. Our Budget process once again delivered an increase under CPI. This was achieved through PB2 and diligent work by staff. We are on track to deliver more good news / good value budgets for the rest of this term. I am proud to be part of a Council that continues to deliver value for money and treats your money as if it was their own.QEP opened and is receiving great reviews. If you haven't been yet, I suggest you go take a look. I know that you will be impressed with all it has to offer. Not only is it the first Community Centre south of the QEW, it is in my opinion the best. Work continues on the Bronte Heritage Park. It is taking shape and is a welcome addition to our waterfront. Life at the harbour is in full swing as boats are in the water. A stroll through the Harbour area is definitely worth the time. With the Shores nearing completion, construction restrictions will be over allowing for the full enjoyment of the waterfront. Some upcoming events are: Ice-cream with Alan & Ralph on

Rentals for all Occasions Birthdays, Anniversaries, Showers, Christmas Parties, Meetings and Celebrations of Every Kind! For more information, or to book your event, contact us.

Saturday June 16th. Sure to be busy with lots to see and again, listen to the music of Fiddlestix.Canada Day in Bronte: Sure to be a great day with fireworks to end a fun packed day. Come celebrate Canada with us. For all the summer events in Bronte, check out this issue or visit the BIA’s website: www.brontevillage.net We have had several discussions with the Provincial Government on the Great Lakes Protection Act. Our input was well received on how all orders of govt. must work together to ensure the viability of the Great Lakes for future generations. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is also stepping with ideas to support the long term success of our lakes. A settlement has been reached with the owners of the Bronte Mall. Hopefully we can now move forward and welcome the redevelopment that will spur the Bronte core revitalization. The Town is also leading working groups on Heritage assets in Bronte and on an Economic Work Plan. The meetings have been well attended and the resident’s feedback is very much valued. Together, these plans will add to the long term development and viability of the Bronte commercial district. And construction is finally underway at the Blue Water Condominiums on Lakeshore. Bronte Athletic Field is receiving great use with many sports groups using the field. The artificial turf has really extended the time of use and it’s great to see the youngsters playing T Ball and baseball on the diamond. All these activities point to the arrival of summer.Council has implemented a Radio communications protocol. However, Radio communications remain a Federal responsibility. Any concerns or questions should be directed to your M.P. For more information please visit www.oakville.ca In closing I wish everyone a happy and safe summer. Enjoy all the benefits of living in Bronte and I hope to see you out and about. As always, please feel free to contact me (ajohnston@oakville.ca ) with your questions or ideas. Alan

Fish Wings & Grill Offers Tasty Food Fast – at Super Prices! Ibrahim Popal’s dream of owning a business finally materialized here in Bronte with his new store, Fish Wings & Grill. “Since 1998, I have worked in the fast food industry: at a Pizza shop, a fried chicken shop, a Dairy Queen and a Fish & Chips shop. I thought is would be a great idea to combine my experience and offer customers all their favourites in one location. It’s like a onestop fast food shop!” says Ibrahim, a proud Bronte resident. Here you can choose from an outstanding menu at very affordable prices. Ibrahim has taken great care to create a menu that appeals to every taste. The favourite item on the menu is the fish and chips. “Everyone, especially the seniors, love my fish and chips” says Ibrahim proudly. There are 5 different varieties of fish and one of the most popular is the spicy Basa. “I got the idea while working in a fish and chips store that combined Indian cooking with Canadian.” says Ibrahim. If you prefer the more traditional approach to fish, you can choose from Halibut, cod, haddock, basa and even shrimp. Another favourite is the Philly Cheese Steak and, priced at only $5.99, it’s a bargain too! Ibrahim has included gyros and donairs on the menu for his mediterranean food fans. Other items on the menu include a selection of seafood,

including tiger shrimps and chips (only $6.99), Calamari rings & chips, clam strips and chips and spicy fish nuggets. You can also get the classic burgers including a spicy version, all priced super low. The wings are available in mild, medium, hot and honey garlic. Six pieces are only $4.99 ($5.99 with fries). There are 7 salads on the menu: garden salad,$2.99; caesar salad, $3.49; greek salad, $3.99 and chicken salad, $4.99. Coleslaw is only 99¢, macaroni salad, $2.49 and potato salad, $2.49 In addition to the regular sides – french fries and onion rings – you can choose from spicy fries, poutine, and fried mushroom. Ibrahim has also included gravy for those who like it on their fries. Fish Wings & Grill has only been open a few months and already, Ibrahim has many loyal customers. Says Dave Frizzell, “Fish Wings & Grill provides the best quality and variety of food at a great price. The wings are always cooked perfectly. I bring my whole family here! You get a good size order plus a friendly atmosphere”. Be sure to visit soon. We think you’ll agree with Dave! Fish Wings & Grill, 2309 Lakeshore Road West (next to Tim Horton’s) 905.825.5825. 3rd Annual Grandmothers for African Grandmothers “Stride to Turn the Tide” Time magazine got it right when it named him as one of the world's 100 most influential persons. He is a man of many lives: politician, professor, Canada's UN ambassador, the UN AIDS Special Envoy for Africa, author and eloquent speaker. As UN AIDS envoy his love for Africa endeared him to its people. He saw their struggles: a child unable to find another aspirin for a mom dying of AIDS, the dying moms anguishing about who would look after the children, the grandmothers burying one daughter or son after another. Then he saw these same grandmothers take up the task of caring for the many orphaned grandkids. In losing their working age sons and daughters the grandmothers also lost the main source of their family’s financial support. They were now more impoverished than ever, often lacking the fees to send even one grandchild to school. In Canada we have never had to experience the loss of a generation. Blessed by history and geography and ownership of our own resources, we possess the wealth to stave off such perils to our future. This is not the case in Africa. Someone had to get Africa’s AIDS story out. With his book “Race Against Time” in hand, he set out on a speaking tour across the country. According to Randy Boswell, Stephen Lewis is considered to be Canada’s most impressive orator. He is sought out for repeat engagements by those who have heard him speak in the past. In community halls and universities he never fails to convey his admiration for Africa’s children and the resilience of their grandmothers. But it was in the churches, of every denomination, that he found a uniquely attentive group, women going through the experience of becoming grandmothers themWe make you look good... inside and out! selves. These women were grandmothers with a difference. In WINDOWS - DOORS their twenties, they had been SHUTTERS - BLINDS - INTERIORS shaped by the huge waves of social consciousness that swept over many people in the 60’s. Tell such women that there are impoverished grandmothers who now parent their grandchildren 24/7 and it has HOME REMODELLING CO. the effect of a starter's pistol. It's been said that wherever Stephen Lewis spoke, another Grandmothers group sprang up. In Canada there are 250 Corner of Dundas & Bronte, Oakville groups now. Since the start of 905-827-3331 / fasada.ca the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in 2006

by Mary Easton On Saturday, June 9th, Halton grandmothers from five different local “Grandmothers to Grandmothers “groups will put aside their gardening, baking and Skyping grandkids to host their section of the 3d National “Stride to Turn the Tide” Walk. This Walk is organized by Canadian grandmothers to raise funds for their sub-Saharan African sisters, the courageous grandmothers who take on the fulltime parenting of numerous grandchildren orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. Funds raised go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation which works to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa by helping grassroots organizations so that they can become self-supporting. The Stephan Lewis Foundation funds community organizations which are known to the Foundation and have capacity as well as accountability systems in place. A feature of the Foundation is its respect for the recipients as the on the ground experts who best know the needs, skills and local ways of doing things. Many African grandmothers have had responsible roles in their grassroots organizations. SLF works with these organizations through a team of experienced, Africa - based Field Representatives. Thus there are no offices in Africa and this keeps administrative costs to 10%. Contact between Canada and Africa is maintained through the donation of unused Air Miles by generous Canadians. Many people today shy away from helping Africa so you may wonder how thousands of Canadian women would ever find reason to bond with African women and see them as heroes. The story of how this happened is both amazing and heart warming. The catalyst for their bonding was a Canadian, Stephen Lewis.

they have contributed 13.5 million to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. This funding now reaches grassroots projects in 15 African countries and includes activities such as HIV/AIDS education, caregiver training, parenting courses, income generation, vocational training for teens, and school fees, books and uniforms for the children. African Grandmothers are becoming activists. They are starting to lobby their own governments. The Canadian Grandmothers’ connection has helped with the necessary media attention. In Swaziland, a few months after a second Grandmothers’ Walk in that country, the government introduced free health care for the grandmothers in all the hospitals. In addition, more than 6,000 grandmothers there have obtained bank accounts and are receiving stipends on a monthly basis. At International AIDS Conferences, Grandmothers have attained official standing. Carole Holmes of Oakville’s Grandmothers group, Oomama, gave an address to the UN. If Olivia Ward’s prediction of an African Spring in 10 years comes true, it will be today’s African grandchildren who will fight, once again, for greater freedom. Support from Canada in their formative years is vital. The Halton grandmothers hosting the Walk include five groups: Oomama, the Ubuntu Grandwomen, Blooms for Africa, North Halton Grandmothers, and the Bronte Grandmothers. These groups extend a warm welcome to everyone in the Halton community to join them in their Walk. Everyone who supports the grandmothers is called a “GRAND OTHER”. We would love to have lots of “GRAND OTHERS” show up the day of the Walk. Husbands, children, students, friends and strangers too, can register the morning of the walk at St. Thomas Aquinas

Summer Eye Protection by Dr. Karen Smith Did you know that the sun’s UV rays can not only damage your skin, but your eyes as well? Over time, UV rays can lead to eye diseases and vision loss. They can damage both the eye’s surface and the interior of your eyes. They contribute to the development of cataracts and the progression of age-related macular degeneration, as well as skin cancers. If you don’t protect your eyes from UV light, the damage can lead to blindness. Children’s eyes are very susceptible to sun damage and as they tend to be outside more often, they also need a pair of quality sunglasses with high UVA and UVB protection. The best way to protect your eyes from UV is to get a good pair of sunglasses. Lenses are as important as the frames you choose and should be free of distortion. Most manufacturers label their products, stating their protective ability. Don’t be deceived by the colour or cost of sunglasses. The darkest lenses do not necessarily give the best protection. Only an invisible UV protective coat, applied during the manufacturing stage or built into the lens can accomplish this. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, buy wrap-around glasses to prevent the sun from entering your eyes from the sides. Since clouds aren’t effective UV filters, wear your sunglasses on cloudy days too, particularly if you have light eyes, which are more susceptible. Sunglasses aren’t just for fashion; they’re your first line of defence in keeping your eyes safe from the sun. Wear them winter, spring, summer and fall! Make it a habit- sunscreen

for your skin; proper sunglasses for your eyes! Come by and see our full line of Maui Jim, Fendi, Gucci, Versace and Armani Sunglasses. Ask Dr. Karen Smith and our new Associate, Dr Melissa Oliver what is right for you!

The empowerment you will possess will give you the strength to move past the road blocks and straight to your desired destination with ease and grace. You will be able to forgive and trust while maintaining your boundaries.. It is important to act compassionately while holding on to your own power. By cutting a hole in your resistance with your willpower, you can melt the icy barrier and achieve a breakthrough for yourself that will lead you to a place of deeply imbedded inner strength. If you are experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety, frustration ,sadness, hopelessness, anger, grief or are just so stressed that you need a break and a change in how you have been seeing things, this is a great treatment for you to consider. This is a great one-on-one therapy but can also be done in couples and also in groups. Why not empower yourself , your loved ones and your partners. A negative mind-set can make life far too difficult and unpleasant and your energy very heavy. It can also affect your physical body. Holding on to negative thoughts and emotions makes your body acidic and therefore allows disease to manifest physically as well as mentally. Spiritual Psychology seeks to understand the three layers of the human being – mind, body and spirit . It is therefore appropriate that we use an intuitive component to this healing therapy. It is a conversation between the higher self of the therapist to the higher self of the client and taking the mind , body and spirit from a negative to a positive state . Move away from failure and distress so that you may drive toward success and happiness . Positive thinking dramatically increases your chances of success in any endeavor. When you are certain

Summer 2012

that you are worthy and that achievement is in your grasp , you start to relax and look for solutions rather then dwelling on the problems. It is always your choice as to how much you want to heal and how quickly you would like to move forward . The year 2012 is made for change -is it time for one in your life? IT IS WITHIN YOUR POWER TO BE HEALTHY AND HAPPY YOU DESERVE IT!!! Classes in Spiritual Psychology are also available

Traditional Chinese Massage and Acupuncture does Wonders for Acute Low Back Pain By Matthew Tian At Meridian Massage & Acupuncture Centre at the Bronte Village Mall in Oakville, we see a large amount of acute low back pain, which can be “fixed” with one or more treatment sessions of Traditional Chinese Massage and Acupuncture. According to the National Institutes of Health, back pain is the second most common neurological disorder in the United States – second only to headaches which are more common. Most acute back pain is mechanical in nature. Acute or shortterm low back pain can generally last from a few bad days to a

few weeks, but can sometimes even last months. Pain can usually be caused by a sports injury, work around the house, in the garden, or even something as simple as a sneeze or putting socks on. Symptoms may range from muscle aches to a shooting or stabbing pain, limited flexibility, range of motion issues, or the inability to stand up straight. Here is a typical story: In early May 2012, Steven, a new patient, felt a sudden severe pain early in the morning after bending over to put on his socks. He called an ambulance. The doctors gave him an emergency CT scan, and told him there were no significant medical findings. Steven got a morphine shot and was sent home and told to go to see his family physician if there were any new changes. Steven stayed in bed for 3 days. His wife took care of dressing and feeding him. On the 4th day when Steven arrived at my clinic, he refused to sit down for the initial interview—standing up from chair would “kill him”. One hour later when Steven walked up right out of the treatment room, his wife smiled as she saw a different Steven. Steven said that 75% of his pain gone, he was very much impressed. Steven did not need to come back for a second visit. He called to cancel his follow up appointment and said that he was feeling so wonderful and that he just wanted to enjoy the sun at the lakeshore waters. Just earlier this month, a similar story happened. A gentleman reported an immediate 50% relief of pain when he got off our treatment table. He is coming back to see me this afternoon for his second treatment, I wonder if he will need to come back for a third visit. I started to investigate the mechanisms of this kind of low back pain in the early 1990s, when I practiced as a neurologist in China. I “fixed” over 100 similar cases, in most cases with just a few treatment sessions. In Traditional Chinese medicine, we have a special name for this condition: “Shan Yao 腰” or “岔⽓ Cha Qi”. The blockage of Qi causes severe pain. Traditional Chinese medical doctors also call it irritated facet joint syndrome. In western medicine, this condition is not well understood. It is usually called mechanical lower back pain. Doctors usually prescribe pain killers and muscle relaxants for this condition. Patients sometimes may also go physiotherapy for extended period of time. Other conditions that may cause acute low back pain can include fracture of lumbar vertebrae, injury to the muscles and ligaments. Therefore adequate assessment is important. In summary, most acute low back pain is mechanical in nature, which means medical doctors cannot always identify specific clinical findings. For such acute lower back pain, Traditional Chinese massage and acupuncture can correct the problem within one to a few treatment sessions. Matthew Tian is a registered massage therapist, certified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. He is the clinical director of Meridian Massage & Acupuncture Centre located in Bronte Village Mall. Matthew was a neurologist before he immigrated to Canada. He was trained in both traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. He also earned a Master’s degree in physiology. Meridian Massage & Acupuncture: 2441 Lakeshore Rd W, Oakville,

had to stand) had to be extended to 15th and 17th May in order to allow the many delegations to present their views. Over 20 presentations were heard by Council and by the obviously very concerned audience on 15th and 17th May.. The presentations included representatives from MyBronte group; Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA); a psychologist on behalf of Citizens for Clarkson – Lorne Park; an environmental lawyer and others. Following each presentation the Councillors questioned the presenters and a very clear picture has emerged: The people are : a) Against the reduction of the setback to 20 meters; b) Against the use of the high strength commercial antennas although they meet the present requirements of Safety Code 6; c) Critical of the H.C.’s unwillingness to consider the findings of international research even though some of the countries in Europe and elsewhere have adopted the “Precautionary Principle” i.e. when there are signs of possible adverse effects (in this case) to health, although uncertain, the risk of inaction can be greater than the risk of acting.; d) Critical of the lack of Canadian research on the subject of the risk of radiation from the cell towers etc., e) Against Bell Canada’s unbending attitude concerning installation of antennas close to residential areas etc. and are also quite incensed by I.C.’s sole authority on the siting of all cell towers. Following the presentations at the 17th May meeting the Council voted to unanimously to retain the 200 meters setback even though it is cognizant of the fact that it can be overruled by I.C. An interesting observation was made by one of the Councillors who stated that although he was originally for the reduction to 20 meters, having heard the presentations and especially the personal stories of hardship due to the radiation, he changed his opinion and voted for retention if the setback to 200 meters. In addition, the Council approved to replace all references to “Municipal Letters of Concurrence…” which I.C. requires with “Municipal Letters of Comment” so as not to be seen as always agreeing with I.C.’s siting decisions. Furthermore the Council will require the antennas installers to obtain a supporting letter from the Oakville Member of Parliament Terence Young before proceeding with any installations. The Council recognized the difficulty of doing anything to influence an upgrade in Safety Code 6, however it is prepared to strive hard through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities toward obtaining for the municipalities a more serious role in governing their towns and cities than that available at present. In closing it should be noted that Councillors Robinson, Johnson, Damoff, Duddeck, and Khan have been very supportive of MyBronte group’s appeal from the beginning of the issue. Our Member of Parliament Terence Young has been and is very active in Ottawa on MyBronte’s group’s behalf including discussions in caucus, a private member’s bill to be presented in the Parliament and also will be holding a seminar on the subject for the GTA’s Members of Parliament shortly.

Fundraiser At Club 54 On June 9 For Abandoned Dog, Nazareth Nazareth (aka Naz or Nazzie) was found on November 1st, 2011 abandoned, left to die, on the balcony of an apartment. It's not clear how long he was out on the balcony without food or water. Neighbours reportedly made several complaints about him barking. But eventually he stopped barking and just lay there to die. And when a neighbour saw what appeared to be a dead dog being eaten by birds, the authorities were called. That emaciated, bird-pecked carcass was Nazareth, and they discovered he was alive ...... dehydrated, starved, given up all hope … but alive. He was taken to the OSPCA where it was discovered that he was paralyzed in the hind end. He was then transferred to a local veterinary clinic for xrays & emergency treatment; and subsequently for a neurological assessment which concluded that the most likely cause of his paralysis was a herniated disc. How he came to be paralyzed, we do not know. How long had he been paralyzed ... we also do not know. He is estimated to be 12yrs of age. Caring for Nazzie is a full time 24/7 job. And it’s not easy. He’s a big dog & carrying him from room to room , or out to the garden, getting him into & out of the bath tub, lifting him into his wheelchair, lifting him into the car, are all daunting tasks. But Nazzie is worth DOORS OPEN 8PM; SHOWTIME 8:30PM it. He has a spirit that touches everyone who meets him, and indeed it was that spirit that captured the hearts of the OSPCA staff who championed for his right to live. Are You Toxic? by Bronte Natural Health Clinic The question is no longer whether you are toxic, but rather “how” toxic are you? There’s no escaping the countless number of environmental toxins we touch, ingest and inhale on a daily basis, indoors and out. In addition, it’s not something you always feel. Common symptoms in people with significant toxicity can include fatigue, headaches, constipation, joint pain, low immunity, irritable bowels, PMS and poor mental functions. In addition, specialty labs in North America are reporting that even infants and people with organic lifestyles are not passing toxicity testing. If there’s no escaping the exposure to toxins, what can we do about it? The first reaction should be to implement as many dietary and lifestyle changes as possible. The next step should be to get some sense of which kind of a cleanse would be most appropriate for you. There are five organs of elimination, including liver, kidneys, skin, lungs and colon. Do you need a parasite cleanse? A liver cleanse? Heavy metals removal? And how safe is this if you are weak, elderly, medicated or pregnant? One of the simplest, safest, and affordable ways to allow your body to detox on it’s own is to make a dietary change. Not only are you reducing exposure to more toxins with organic foods and clean eating, you can custom select foods and spices to specifically support your organs to release toxins from the past. For example, eating greens, sprouted or fermented foods, and juicing raw fruits and vegetables are the common staples of a detox diet. Many people also benefit from gluten free or blood type recommendations. But one size does not fit all. Seeing a nutritionist

can help you choose which dietary changes are most specific and therefore most beneficial for you and your health condition. This information can then be organized into proper meal planning and practical advice from matching recipes, shopping lists and even hands-on cooking classes. These lifestyle changes can benefit your health as quickly as the first day of eating better, and for years to come. There are many affordable tests that can be done to focus your detox efforts further. For example, a simple drop of blood can be viewed immediately under a microscope to view various forms of toxicity, digestive issues and immune performance. This method shows toxins in the plasma, including acidity, heavy

metals, and damaged red bloods from free radical exposure. You can also see your immune performance in live action, including many actual parasites such as Candida yeast and bacteria. Incomplete or weak digestion is also visible under the microscope. This can give you an idea of which organs are not performing their best, and what to do about it. Some samples we have seen were shockingly toxic and parasitic, despite the patient having little or no symptoms. This method can be useful for initial screening, to monitor progress on pre-existing treatment plans, and for cancer-after care. Darlene Gustin, has practised naturopathic medicine at Bronte Natural Health Clinic for 21 years, and has seen dramatic shifts in the health of our local community. She tests every patient for heavy metals because she finds that half of her local patients are toxic in multiple heavy metals. She also finds that most patients are not self-supplementing in the most effective way and

would benefit from some form of guidance by an alternative health professional. Bronte Natural Health Clinic is excited to announce the arrival of two new staff, to better assist our community in assessing and treating their health in the most effective way. Shannon Gregory is offering the testing service of Live Blood Cell analysis on a dark field microscope, including the option of a take home photo of your blood. Natalya Frolova is the new registered nutritionist, offering one-on-one nutritional consultations, meal planning, cooking classes, and lifestyle programs. Under the care of naturopathic doctor, Darlene Gustin, all services at the clinic may be eligible for extended insurance coverage. On Saturday, April 14, 2012 that which was just a dream 10 months earlier became a reality. The Oakville Church of the Nazarene has two buildings on their property at 320 Bronte Rd., the church building and a large house overlooking Bronte Creek that was originally the parsonage. For 15 years the house was rented to a tenant who had a daycare called Precious People Daycare and who was shut down by the ministry in June of 2011. The Church leadership last June felt it was time to take back their building and step out in faith to open a not for profit children's centre. Seedlings Children's Centre was licensed in March of this year and the celebration and grand opening was in April. The Seedlings children's centre offers safe and loving daycare to Toddlers and Preschoolers (starting as young as 15 months). In the church's Gym, a before and after school program is being offered starting September 2012. Summer Camps will be offered for July and August for ages 6 -12 and will run 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to help working parents. It will include a weekly field trip and fun activities. We think this is good news for Bronte. Come take a tour. Check out the Website www.seedlingschildren.com. Who’s The Best In Customer Satisfaction? Coldwell Banker® pioneered Ultimate Service® in Canada 15 years ago, providing a signed written pledge to deliver quality service based on individual consumer’s specific needs. So it’s probably no coincidence that for a remarkable 15th year in a row, Coldwell Banker® Real Estate recieved a 98%* overall customer satisfaction rating in a survey of more than 60,000 Canadian home buyers and sellers.* It’s a claim no other real estate brand in Canada can match! If you want to know about quality of service that Coldwell Banker agents deliver, don’t take our word for it - ask our customers. They’ve given us what you might call the “ultimate” compliment.
