Kids & Teens Drawing Lessons

After School | Ages 7 - 18 For children or teens who love drawing and express a wish to do it better. Students will be taught basic technical elements of art, while working on project(s) of their choice. Basic drawing techniques are fundamental to all art.

Understanding tools, terminology, line, shading and composition will be taught. All skill levels encouraged and returning students welcome.

Kid’s Pottery

Ages 7 and up Children will make a variety of items in this fun, hands on class and discover different clay building techniques (hand-building and wheel). All projects will be glazed and kiln fired. All skill levels.

Creative Art, Mixed Media

After School | Ages 7 - 18 An extremely interesting course offering the history of mask making throughout the world’s different cultures; taught by this popular instructor. With the mask theory knowledge, students will create their own using various materials. Returning students welcome.

Wheel Pottery

Learn skills and techniques of throwing pottery vessels on the wheel. We are fortunate to have a skilled, local potter with 40 years of experience to teach this class! For beginners and returning students.

Intermediate Stained Glass

Brazilian Embroidery

Students must have taken a Beginner’s Stained Glass course, or have some recent experience.

This copper foil method Stain Glass course will offer the student a choice of two patterns for a window panel, either a rectangle or oval shape, to be done in a Tiffany glass style. Includes time for bag lunch and student clean-up.

Date: Saturdays, February 1 - March 1 Time: 10 am - 3 pm Fee: $210 (Includes use of tools) Supply Fee: Purchase own supplies and glass, some of which are available at the centre-approximately $75-$100.

Stained Glass Studio Time (NEW!) Studio Time provides an informal supervised time, and space to work on your craft. Bring your own tools, or use ours. Pay accordingly. No formal instruction is provided, although mini instructor run workshops may be arranged.

Attendees can inspire and assist each other with ideas and techniques. Students must have had adequate stained glass instruction and experience to sign up (suggest Beginner and Advanced Courses). The WAACC has a selection of glass available for purchase.

The ancient craft of three dimensional embroidery, for beginners or the more experienced. A variety of stitches to create amazing, beautiful designs will be taught.

Students should bring a 5� embroidery hoop and scissors.

Date: (Session 1) Tuesdays, January 21 February 25 Date: (Session 2) Tuesdays, March 4 - April 8 Time: 1 - 3 pm Fee: $35; Purchase necessary supplies from instructor (about $50 for beginners).

Hardanger New students will learn basic stitches of Scandinavian Embroidery (Hardanger).

Advanced students will work on their own projects, or Instructor assigned project suggestions, given as challenge pieces.

Quilting Studio Time For the beginner to intermediate quilter. Bring a new or existing project that you would like to work on. Provides an opportunity for support and new skill development. Students must bring a sewing machine in good working order, thread, fabric, cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter.

Photography Photography Club Some members of the community have expressed an interest in forming a photography club in Wetaskiwin. This club would meet throughout the year, support and learn from each other. There may be things like courses, events, and outings. As well there may be a yearly photography show and/or competition.

If you have an interest in being involved in the formation of such a club, please leave your name with the WAACC.

Composition & Design Techniques (Still Life)

A variety of styles, effects and filters that will provide the participant with an opportunity to expand their photo envelope. Morning classroom session on techniques and afternoon shoot at the Reynolds Museum.

Suggested Supply List: Camera and lens (SLR style with 4/3 or larger sensors suggested but NOT necessary), Screen, camera manual, Fresh Memory Card, Fresh Battery, Tripod and pen and paper.

Instructor: Robert Goerzen has decades of photography experience, and is often an instructor for McBain Camera.

Permaculture 7: Working On Your Own Site Plans

Permaculture Series 5-9

Students will learn how to observe and “read” your space so you are planting in appropriate places. Learn about season extending in the Spring and vermicomposting soil harvesting and watch a demonstration on using this nutritious fertilizer in your plants. Worms may be available to purchase at class. Bring an old apron or shirt.

These are good courses for beginner vegetable gardeners and masters alike. Natural food production is at the heart of Permaculture. By learning Permaculture design principals you will be able to develop a good working plan for your garden and yard. Margot has run a small, ecologically minded agribusiness growing vegetables for 25 families. She has a keen, well-honed interest in nature, which lead to obtaining a Permaculture Design Certificate.

Learn how to create a crop rotation planning guide, how to shop and select the best seeds.

Bring your garden plan to discuss problem areas and elements you wish to design into your space.

Discussing early planting on when, where and what to plant. Get a running start on your planting with an inside seed demo and take- home seeded tray (different plants to the February class). Bring an old apron or shirt.

Ongoing Programs Women of Aspenland: Discover the lives of women who played a role in building your community As an ongoing exhibit the Heritage Museum pays tribute to the many women who made their own unique contribution to the community of Wetaskiwin. Whether working in the home or in public life, they are all heroines.

The exhibit now includes almost 80 ladies with four new inductees being showcased each year.

We are always looking for recommendations, so stop by, let our heroines inspire you, and maybe even nominate someone you know.

Exhibit Spotlight: Origins, a time in history Did you know that your Heritage Museum has dinosaur fossils? In October a fossil discovery near Spirit River Alberta made headlines with the paleontologists suggesting that it may be a Hadrosaur. You need not travel that far, however, to get in on the action. Here at the Heritage Museum we have Ornithomimid and Hadrosaur fossils on display, including a leg bone that you can touch!

Pioneer Children Birthdays Want a new birthday party idea? Taking place in our Children’s Pioneer Play Rooms, the Heritage Museum offers a unique 2 hour program where your children can dress up in pioneer costumes and experience what life was like for the pioneer child including making real butter and shopping for candy at the General Store.

Ideal for 5 to 10 years olds, the program will be tailored depending on the age and gender of the children.

Lost Highway: The Hank Williams Story – The music and legend of Hank Williams A musical biography of the legendary singer songwriter. The play follows Williams’ rise from his beginnings on the Louisiana Hayride to his triumphs on the Grand Old Opry to his eventual self-destruction at twenty-nine. Water Fitness Classes Water Polo Water Polo is a team sport with up to 7 players per team. The game is usually played in water deep enough that no one can touch the bottom, but it can be played in the shallow end or with flotation assistance. Our learn-to-play environment invites participants to discover the game and the basic skills involved. Water Polo is played by everyone 13 and up.

AquaTots Need some exercise, but have no one to watch the kids? Come join the Aboussafy Aquatic Centre’s AquaTots class. A qualified staff member will be in the training pool to supervise games and fun for your child, while you are able to enjoy the one hour Aquafit class in the main pool. * AquaTots fee is $8.50. This includes one adult and one child

Stretch & Move Adult and Teen Swim Lessons Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens. The program is based on individual improvement designed to further develop strokes chosen by the swimmer in consultation with the Water Safety Instructor to increase swimming distances and proficiency. All starting levels welcome.

This class is perfect for seniors, people recovering from injury, people with restricted mobility or those simply looking for light exercise. This fun class focuses on improving flexibility and mobility. Many participants who find exercising on dry-land difficult can comfortably and safely be active in the water.

Water is a forgiving medium, reducing joint compression and the downward pull of gravity.

Enjoy this half-hour class set to music; no swimming skills required.

Deep Water Running

Masters Swim Club

Deep Water Running is jogging in water deep enough that your feet don’t touch the bottom.

The natural buoyancy of the water reduces the strain on your joints, bones and provides the same cardiovascular benefits as running on solid ground. Participants may choose to use a buoyancy belt – the aquabelt suspends you so that your whole body gets a total workout.

Whether you’re interested in stroke improvement, triathlons, 55+ Summer Games or Lifesaving Sport, the Wetaskiwin Masters Swim Club has a place for you! Registration cost includes 3 coached sessions a week and a 6 month lane swim membership. Attending all three coached sessions a week is not mandatory. If you already have an Aboussafy Aquatic Centre membership, please see Marcia or Angela for pricing options.

Aquafit This class is taught in the shallow end of the main pool, with your feet on the bottom of the pool. This is a fun and energetic aerobic exercise class that uses the water for resistance to help improve muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness.

Karataquatics Karataquatics is a fast paced workout based on techniques used in martial arts training. Done in the shallow end, this class alternates between cardio and resistance training. Youth Leadership & Advanced Aquatic Programs Bronze Medallion Prerequisites: Bronze Star or 13 years and up Aboussafy Aquatic Centre Bronze Medallion Award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries and defense and release methods in preparation for the challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Free Public Skating

Prerequisites: AWSI Become certified to teach Red Cross Swimming Lessons. WSI focuses on planning and teaching the Red Cross continuum, instructional emergency response skills and instructional techniques specific to our programs.

Candidates will learn how to plan lessons, evaluate skills and be prepared to interact with different age groups ranging from infants to adults. This course requires an additional 12 hours of co-teaching; however, extra coteaching hours may be needed. Hours will be assigned to each candidate.

Free Public Skating is offered to community members with the help of our local sponsors!

Extended Public Skating times will be offered on WRPS PD Days and Statutory Holidays. Sorry, no sticks and pucks allowed during this skate.

Wetaskiwin CLC, Wetaskiwin Chamber of Commerce Board Room Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems—problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you’re at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. This 8-week course is meant to help you understand and control anger in order to make better life choices and create positive lasting changes. The course is taught by a mediator/conflict manager and a psychologist.

Wetaskiwin and District Victim Services Wetaskiwin and District Victim Services is a police-based organization located within the Wetaskiwin RCMP Detachment. The Unit provides information, referrals and support to victims of crime and tragedy from the time of the incident, throughout the investigation, during court proceedings, and afterwards.

Camrose Women’s Shelter Society Our 22 bed residence offers a safe place for women and children from Camrose and surrounding communities who are experiencing domestic violence or a crisis situation. We provide supportive counseling, information, referrals, childcare and an in-house school program for 1-9. Our Outreach programs support residential and non-residential women transitioning to independent living with cultural sensitivity. Gwynne Valley Ski Area We are a family oriented ski hill located in the Gwynne Valley. We have a full rental shop that includes snowblades, snowboards and ski equipment. Rez City Rippers

Rez City Rollers is a women’s flat track roller derby team in Wetaskiwin. Roller Derby is a community-wise sports initiative for women 18 years+. Our purpose is for fun, friendly sports competition among like-minded women. Our goals include promoting an active lifestyle for women, providing a safe environment for contact sport and to encourage alternative sporting options for women. We want to help you kick your own butt and have you kick other butts’ too.

Are you between 8 and 17? Then perhaps Roller Derby is for you. We are the new Junior Team with the Rez City Rollers starting January 2014. Our mission is to empower youth, foster confindence, fair play and team work in the youth of Wetaskiwin.
