Arts & Culture Writing Workshop

we are doing well, hear gentle critique on what we can improve and provide feedback to others. All genres of writing are welcome. We also network to help raise awareness of availability of publishing opportunities, writing contests and writing workshops.

Mystery Writing Workshop by Edmonton author Janice MacDonald (Randy Craig murder mystery series). 9:30am-noon: Ins and outs of mystery fiction (formula, conventions); methodology for creating a detective. 1-2:30pm: One-on-one sessions for direct questions, and discussion of writing samples while others create biographical sketch of their detective and concept of the sort of locale to operate within. 2:30-4:30pm: Shared examination of the detectives created. Many aspects of workshop are beneficial to all kinds of writing.

Kids & Teens Kid’s Pottery Children will make a variety of items in this fun, hands on class and discover different clay building techniques (handbuilding and wheel). Jigsaw Hanging Lamp for Kids Imagine the pride on your child’s face when they show off the funky hanging lamp that could add so much pizzazz to their room. When my kids saw these, they all wanted one, including my teen and adult children. The hardest part will be choosing colours. Be sure to check the pictures on our website. Come see a sample lamp at the Parade of Programs. Student ages 8-16. Instructor: Terry Demoline Date: TBA (Saturday, 1 workshop - 2 hours) Time: 10am - 12noon Fee: $20. Teens & Adults Pottery - Studio Time Applicants must register for use of studio time, pay the fee and purchase the clay we provide at a cost which includes the firing and glazes. Registrants cannot expect instruction. Open to teenagers and adults with verified prior instruction. Studio Techs: Jennifer Nash and Virginia Anderson Date & Time: Tuesday, Sept. 4 to Nov. 6, 6:30 - 9:30pm and Wednesday, Sept. 5 to Nov. 7, 1 - 4pm Fee: $80. for the 10 week period for any or all studio times. $50. for 1/2 box of clay which includes firing and glazes. Daily drop-in fee $10.

Beginner Stained Glass The students will learn the copper foil method to make an approximate 11� square panel. They will learn to cut the pattern , transfer it to the glass, cut the glass, fit and grind the sharp edges which are then foiled and soldered together. Intermediate classed and/or traditional leaded style will be offered at later dates. Teens and adults - no previous experience required. Students should wear long sleeves and NO SANDALS. Brazilian Embroidery Learn stitches from the ancient craft of three dimensional embroidery to create beautiful designs. Enjoyable for the beginner and the experienced crafter. Some supplies will be available at class. Approximately $50.00 for the necessary supplies. Students bring 5� embroidery hoop and scissors. Beaded Moccasins Made from commercially tanned moose hide. Colored beads of choice. Registrants must supply desired moccasin size at time of registration. Beginner Felting Learn the basics of this very hands-on fibre art. Make four projects and learn four different techniques of manipulating fibre into fabric. Beginner and Intermediate Quilting

Adult Pottery – Handbuilding

Students will learn basic piecing skills and be introduced to a variety of patchwork techniques, including applique, paper piecing, machine quilting and hand quilting. More experienced quilters will get help and ideas for an individual project of their own choosing. Instructors will bring a number of tools (cutting mats, rulers and rotary cutters) for group use but it is preferable to have your own equipment. Students will bring a sewing machine (in good working order), thread, fabric of their choice, cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter.

Students will learn handbuilding and glazing techniques with an unlimited scope of creative expression to make useful and decorative objects of their choice. Open to teens and adults of varying experience and skills.

Hardanger New students will learn basic stitches of Scandinavian Embroidery and advanced students will work on their own projects. Native Beaded Earrings Learn beading techniques, colour and style to make your own set of unique earrings. Instructor: Ramona Washburn Date: Saturday, Oct. 6, Nov. 3, Dec. 1 (separate workshops) Time: 10am - 12noon Fee: $25. (includes beads) for each workshop. Knitting – Beginners and More This hands-on course is aimed at the first time knitter. You will complete a small project, learning and practicing the basic stitches and techniques needed to begin projects such as scarves, hats and sweaters. Pattern reading and knitting terms will also be introduced. If you have a pattern you need help reading, bring it along and we will discuss it. Lefthanders are welcome. Open to teenage and adult students. Purchase supplies from instructor which includes yarn, needles, stitch marker, tapestry needle. Alberta yarn made in Carstairs at Custom Woolen Mills will be used. Obsidian Arrowhead Learn the 13,000 year old Aboriginal art of making tools with obsidian, a volcanic glass. The first documented find of obsidian was in the Taber, Alberta area. A number of unique pieces can easily be completed in class – design your very own arrowhead pendant! Tools and supplies provided by instructor at no cost. Must have SAFETY GLASSES. Open to teens and adults. Instructor: Bob Silverthorne Date: Wednesdays, Oct. 24 to Nov. 7 Time: 7 - 9:30pm Fee: $90.

Intermediate and Advanced Stained Glass For those who want to continue in this beautiful art form and have taken the beginner class. The intermediate project will be a panel of 12” x 20” with a more challenging pattern – a choice of two. Advanced students should have taken the intermediate course (or have equal experience). They will choose their own patterns and bring their own supplies and glass. Students should wear long sleeves and NO SANDALS. Bring an apron, safety glasses and a bag lunch. Students are expected to spend 1/2 hour of class time for clean-up. There will be a pre-meet to pick-up pattern and instruction on Wednesday, October 17 at 5:30pm. Christmas Tree Skirt or Table Cloth Workshop Get started on a Holiday project by making your own Tablecloth or Tree Skirt. Basic sewing skills are needed. Some fabric will be available for purchase. Students must bring a sewing machine in good working order, thread, fabric of their choice, cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter. Encaustic – Melted Wax Art

Felted Purses

Using a small travel iron and coloured encaustic wax blocks, learn to create unique works of art with melted wax on paper. Students must bring an envelope or file folder to store work.

If purses are your bag, you’ll enjoy creating a seamless purse using a wet felting, resist technique. A Beginner Felting course or similar experience is pre-requisite for this workshop. Clutch or mobile phone case, over the shoulder or simple handles are possible. Embellishments are provided; however, you may want to bring your own beads, buttons or threads to design a one-of-a-kind fashion statement. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel, plastic bag, lunch and enthusiasm.

Mittens – The First Step Knit a small mitten in class and learn the basics of knitting mitts, including how to make a gusset and tips and tricks for a better fit. Different styles of mittens and thumbs will also be discussed, as well as the mitten tradition of different countries. Socks – The First Steps

Holiday Table Centrepiece

Skill level: knowledge of knit and purl stitches. Knit a small sock in class and learn the basics of knitting socks, including heel construction and toe formation. Different styles of heels will also be discussed, with tips and tricks for a better fitting sock. The sock styles and traditions of various countries will be illustrated, and samples of different styles will be displayed. If you have a pattern you need help reading, bring it along and we will discuss it. Bring a bag lunch.

Students will assemble their own fresh floral Christmas centrepiece. They will learn the basics of floral table centre design and basic floral care as well as qualities of select fresh flowers. Instructor will discuss merits of different containers and decorative additions (artificial and fresh). Supplies to be brought by student: scissors or garden shears, an apron or work shirt, gloves (if desired) and sharp paring knife. Students can bring a special container, Christmas accents or decorations, candles, ribbon, etc. if they want to personalize their creation. Included in the price of the course is a utility container including foam, some winter greens and wire. Students will pay for their own fresh florals to be supplied by the instructor ($15. -$25. depending what the student chooses).

Museums Connecting Senior Mentors and Youth

Connections with By-Gone Days

Seniors connect with Wetaskiwin youth by becoming a mentor. Empower the younger generation as a volunteer mentor as they learn from your wisdom and experience. Meet once a week in the comfortable museum setting. Those experienced with Entertainment (singing, dancing, theatre, various instruments), Military & War Years, Handicrafts & Art, etc.

Children interacting with seniors, documenting their stories. Entertainment workshops children and youths may experiment with various instruments under the mentorship of experienced seniors – discover entertainment history with someone who was there! Become an investigator of history and like a detective, interview and document what life was like in early Wetaskiwin.

CAMROSE WOMEN’S SHELTER SOCIETY Camrose Women’s Shelter can provide a safe place for women and children who need support or need to leave an abusive situation. Sadly women are being abused every day and many children are witnessing these events. Alberta’s rates of domestic violence are among the highest in Canada. Many women are not sure if they should leave and sometimes they know they must leave immediately as they are scared and in danger. We offer a safe place to stay and connect women with services to help them decide what is best for them. We provide food, clothing, information, crisis intervention; danger assessments, safety planning, referrals, and our crisis staff offer phone support and assistance 24/7.
